Works as advertised. Used with Studio One and Cubase. It works.
It’s the based mid level keyboard for your home studio. The drum pads have very obvious latency so I wouldn’t recommend using thus for the drum pad
I didn’t want a MIDI controller that was very big, so I first purchased the Akai MPK Mini MK3 but I wasn’t very happy with its keys. It was a great quality controller, but the Mini keys felt strange and cramped to me. On top of that, the velocity of every note I played into Logic Pro X came in very soft & quiet unless I really smashed into the keys as fast as I could while I played.
Next, I ordered this MPK225 and the difference was night and day. It’s a bigger than I preferred, but as you can see in the pic, it still fit between my keyboard and computer, so that’s good enough for me.
The semi-weighted full-sized keys on MPK225 feel way nicer to play, and I have zero velocity issues.
Everything about this unit feels top-notch. It’s a really great bang for your buck.
The Mini MK3 is a great unit too, but if you’re checking out both of them like I was, I’d say just go for this larger unit.
It is more MIDI than I really know how to use. Def worth the money
Solid controller, best key feel I have felt on a controller, though heavy for semi-weighted. If you have any issues with repetitive strain or play MANY instruments daily, this may be fatiguing. Pads feel great as well, though other than than, it’s no “smart board” by any means, so it doesn’t compete well against Novation or Arturia offerings, but it’s a great feeling board if you don’t need a sequencer or any fancy templates or chord/scale modes. That being said, you can program it to work well with almost any DAW.
Last nit picky detail, the board has a pungent chemical smell, probably fairly common on these, but it’s particularly irritating to the eyes, nose, and even skin, got hives after using it the first time; maybe a coincidence but YMMV
Beautiful keyboard, a little thick for my liking, though it causes me no issues. Keys feel fantastic and pads are nice and sensitive. I haven’t had a midi controller with pads, so I’m quite happy, and impressed with them!
Knobs and slides feel quite high quality, responsive as required. Mod wheels also have a great feel to them.
All in all, this controller is great quality, is very capable and well built. I recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality controller at a good price. Well worth the money!
Why does Amazon want to know how I rate my Akai’s thickness?!
*Clicks five stars*
Anyway…
Only speaking from my experience;
Getting my Macbook Pro (2020) to recognize that this device is connected was an ordeal.
I tried everything:
3 different USB cables – Nope.
Directly into the laptop instead of via a third party hub – Nada…
Powering via separate power adapter – Ha! Guess again…
I bought additional cables, followed every bit of advice from every forum known to man. Nothing worked.
Eventually, I spoke with Apple who did some funky bootup procedures. Eventually, one worked. The device was listed in the Midi Studio! Hazaar! However, it was only recognized when I plugged it in directly via the cable I’d purchased (USB-B to USB-C). Not only that, but it only works when the USB is plugged in one way (despite the fact that USB-C is non-directional). Utterly bizarre, quite annoying since I can’t connect via my hub, but I’m just glad I’ve got it working since (for the money) this is a great bit of kit that offers everything I need.
If you’re having issues similar to mine I suggest you invest in a USB-B to USB-C cable and connect directly into your Mac (and if it still doesn’t work, try turning the USB-C around *eye roll*)
I love this keyboard so much! What made me hesitant to buy this was tech support – I tried using some of the software it came with and it did not work or was very difficult to use so I gave up. The keyboard it’s self is beautiful. and good to play on – compatible with ableton.
First off, the keys arent weighted. secondly, u cant hook a speaker or amp to the midi controller, u can only hook up to a pc, and its a pain in the but to get working….not what i expected.
Great usb/midi keyboard controller I have ever used in 20 years of computer music production. The build quality is brilliant and fabulous weighted keys. I’m not a fan of the VIP 3.1 software free bundle as it keeps crashing.
I just got it all setup and this thing is amazing! You will not be disappointed. Excellent craftsmanship. Perfect size. Can’t wait to drive into its full potential. I do recommend getting an attachment for the stand to hold your laptop.
Item came new and and in the same package.
Item came as advertised.
My son had a Roland prior to this and really wanted to try this Akai. Now that he has it he can’t stop playing it. He loves everything about it. We are both glad that we purchased this unit.
The F6 Fader is useless. I don’t know why. Now I have solve the problem, so review it again.
ot much to say but it dose what it says on package. cant complane
Super!
Best purchase ever. Really appreciate the packaging too and the vendor added a cute beanie with the purchase which was thoughtful <3 thank you 🙂
Best keyboard i ever onw quality is gerat the pad are cool feel good to us
If your main focus is making a track with a beat then this is the perfect product. MPC Essentials basically does everything for you and you can click and drag into your DAW (I use ProTools). Pads are super responsive and it comes with great software and 3 sets of instruments.
I’ve owned a few of these type of keyboards over the years but this has the best build quality and keyboard action of all of them.
Who wants to have a separate MIDI keyboard, drum pads and a control surface? Not me, so I took the plunge and purchased the Akai MPK261 – the 61 key variant. I does take up quite a bit of space but it has made my composing workflow much smoother. Setting it up wasn’t trivial but I use Cubase and one of the advantages of the Akai is that you can get a file to import the mapping from Cubase functions (like moving the faders) to the sliders on the MPK261. So it’s easier to set up than my previous MIDI keyboard/control surface/ percussion pads – in fact I never got any of three working properly to the extent that this now does, almost straight out of the box. All in all I am very happy with this product.
Kinda weird combining it with heavy keyed piano but the pads and the knobs obviously made for Ableton speeds up my music making process tremendously
Its a good controller keyboard but i didnt like the keybeds feeling is poor, i rather choose older keyboards with the good action like a Ensoniq/Nord/Kurzweil/Korg! Those keyboards have really nice touch feelings ! But thank you
MIDI over USB is easy to set up – (I use REASON 10) – great response – slider F8 is the same as slider F7 .. is this on purpose? Firmware? Not sure so I am not dinging a star but that is the ONLY issue!
All in all very pleased slightly disappointing “plasticiness”
Works well, plug and play with Ableton 10
I can’t judge based off of alot of other mpks but I really love this one. The only thing is I wish the keys were a tad bit more sensitive to the heavy presses but I think I can find a way to fix tha
Bought this and use it as a controller for music production in ableton. It’s amazing!
Very fast delivery. This midi keyboard has a high quality feel to it. Nice resistance on the knobs and faders. The keyboard plays very well. Intuitive interface. Connects effortlessly with Logic Pro and Ableton Live (the only DAWs I use).
I use abelton, all i did was plug it in and play, amazing machine super easy to use, i would definatley recommend
This piece of equipment is awesome it’s been a while since I bought this but im just now getting to use it And it is worth the money. Plus it can make you more money than it costs
Bought for my husband and he absolutely loves it hasn’t had one complaint yet.
Awesome keyboard midi interface which needs more info provided to get a true beginner started—-not music theory level, rather something to get someone who is already a musician up and running with the software. It took a lot of YouTube hunting to find out how to make set it up with FL Studio. Also apparently there use to be no power button and it would just be on as long as your computer was on and it was hooked up to a usb. Now there’s a power button which is not mentioned at all until literally the very end of the manual! Really guys—put that info in the beginning along with the other setup info.
Fantastic if you know what you are doing. Great features, great knobs, works great with other synths/midi control/etc.
The power button is a huge pain. I have no idea why they made this tiny little power button located underneath a protector right next to the power input. Its odd, its about 2mm diameter power button.
Also, a power adaptor is not included with the purchase, so you need to find one which is irritating.
I bought this for my son because he needed it for creating music for movies he makes online. He absolutely loves this and claims he can make any sound effect needed for his creations, as well as easily making soundtracks.
I’ve played this and the keys have a nice feel. Full sized keys and 4 octaves. Buttons, knobs and other adjustment items are well made. It should last a long time, even with heavy use.
Excellent keyboard. I can only compare with other cheaper controller keyboards I have owned from IK multimedia and other brands. This keyboard is night and day compared with my irig keys pro, which was an overpriced tacky piece of junk.
This Akai keyboard is solidly built (quite heavy too) and oozes quality all over it. I love the action of the keys and they are quite silent compared with the ik keys and not clacky at all.
I’m not sure if I’ll use all the buttons and controls on this keyboard or if some of them are even necessary but the option is there and could prove useful at some point.
Great keyboard.
I am rather fond of AKAI. The company makes solid gear that performs well, feels good. The MPK249 is the very essence of Akai, it includes the famous MPC pads and also 8 faders and 8 knobs. When used with the VIP software, it is able to control VST plugins with preset mappings, very cool.
One of the main attractions is the really nice keybed that includes 49 keys with aftertouch. It’s a pleasure to play this keyboard. Overall, I found that the Ableton Live Lite template works fine with regular Live. Just add an APC40MKII and you’ve got absolutely amazing musicmaking rig.
Using this for professional studio. Works well especially for its size.
This was a gift for my son. He was very pleased to receive this for Christmas. He is now back at school and every time l call him he is playing it.
Great keyboard set up for a small studio. Use it with reason and it works awesome. The keys feel great compared to other cheaper keyboards.
I wanted a lot of control in a small space and this keyboard delivers. The keys feel nice – solid with some mass. The pads are great with excellent aftertouch, fully programmable in four banks with a “full velocity” switch and a programmable repeat. It syncs to external clock easily. The keyboard arpeggiator is excellent with most common patterns available. The other programmable knobs and switches (with a transport control) are what you want. Not great for master clock as you have to go page diving to get to tempo and the internal clock isn’t very accurate. I have not used the included software – Highly recommended.
I am using it with MIDI DIN only. The USB port is being used for power. (NB – No wall wart included.) Buy an OnStage pedestal stand and you will be styling.
I’ll keep this short. By far my favorite USB / MIDI keyboard I’ve used. I had tried the cheaper 25 key Akai, but it was just too small and the synth key action I didn’t like.
By contrast, this thing is a full sized keyboard. For most electronic music production, you might try a riff or something on the keyboard, test out chords etc., but you’re unlikely to be playing Mozart. Point being, I’d rather a very useful 25 key to a less useful full size 88. 25 is also about as big as fits decently on a desk, especially with a mixer and more.
The drum pads are super responsive and sensitive, and 4×8 banks gives you 32 options, though I doubt many use them much – I’d get an MPC or something if I wanted just the pads. They’re there and work very well though. Note repeat is like an arp for the pads as well.
Regular arp mode is nice too and well implemented, you can get some cool sounds going by playing with latch and letting the arp bounce around notes. You’ll almost always edit them in a DAW, but it’s a starting point for some cool stuff.
The keys feel great, play great, etc., far from the synth action of the cheaper models.
Tons of onboard DAW presets plus Ableton Live Lite included is good, too. No support for mixcraft which I use, but no surprise there.. anything common is covered though, and you can make your own presets as well. I do wish there was more variability in the presets – swappable banks like the pads would be nice, since for example if you’re using a VST like serum, there’s a lot of places you can map the knobs – plus if you mod one, changing the mod % is a different knob. Of course, there’s really not much room, and if I care that much there are MIDI controllers with more options, I even have a 49-key that at least has sliders and 12 knobs, but I still rarely use it, this is so much more preferable.
(And yes I keep note stickers on some keys.. never officially learned to play so those are helpful at times).
By far my favorite MIDI equipment, would buy again for sure. Also just confirms my love for Akai, I think more Akai products are in my future.
My first MIDI controller so probably not the best review but representitive of a beginners experience…
Easy to setup initially with your favourite DAW, plenty of info available online if you’ve never used a similar product. Plug and play with the ability to do more in depth configuration as you progress, with software and hardware.
Has enough keys to play a range of melodies (two full octaves with an extra C) can be played two handed however if you are decent at playing piano you may find it limiting. the pitch shifters (one sustained one returns to the middle when you let go) allow you to reach different pitches although, I don’t think they shift full octaves alone however with the Octave up and down buttons this is possible.
The keys feel decent (even somewhat better than other semi-weighted keyboards ive used from reputable brands) and are relatively accurate as far as the velocity is concerned though it may take a while to get used to if you haven’t used anything similar.
Ability to plug expression/sustain pedals directly into the back was a nice feature that i didn’t even consider using when I first purchased.
The latency of input was at first a bit off but I soon realised that the response time can be changed with software which I believe lowers the initial quality of input and allows for the signal to be near instant (quality of rendered sound is not affected e.g. after exporting to .mp3/wav etc.) This isn’t really a problem but is particularly useful for doing drum patterns in real time and not having to manually quantize as much if you can’t get it perfectly on beat which is something that has a learning curve itself and took me a while to figure out.
The pads have a nice feel and aren’t too soft/firm. I found it hard to judge velocity which could be a problem however I soon found the ‘full level’ button which detects all pad input as max velocity, allowing for consistency where necessary. I found this to be the way to go for me though it would be possible to learn the velocity levels I prefer to lay down the drum pattern then go back in the software and change It manually to perfect and reduce velocity for things such as open hats. 8 pads are enough for me with the ability to cycle through 4 banks being a nice extra.
I’m still learning with it and haven’t used all of the buttons/features such as the knobs, latch and arpeggitator but as far as music production goes, this device has taken me from not being able to create a simple drum pattern to learning how to create complex meoldies using different scales and diverse drum patterns and being able to translate the melodies I can think of directly into digital format which is something I didn’t think I would achieve.
For anyone who is looking for their first MIDI device this may be a bit overkill however as you progress and climb the learning curve i feel you may find that this has a few extra features that allow you to progress and learn more without being hindered by hardware as early as you might with other devices. If you are serious about learning to create music I would suggest this device and would even consider the models with extra keys (49 and 61 I believe) if you have the room.
Durability. I’ve only put out around 30 hours into using the device however I’m very impressed by the design and feel of it and nothing seems to have degraded/worn out/ no buttons sticking or friction in the keys etc. even with the most used pads/keys. It is slightly bulky and has a fair weight to it however this imo makes it feel more durable. LEDs look good and while they are quite bright they aren’t obnoxious or off putting and do serve a function in showing you which bank is selected, which buttons are ON such as the ‘Full level’ making it possible to see what settings you have selected without having to mess about playing something to see if it sounds different.
All in all I would recommend the product however first consider if you will be dedicating some time to learning and perfecting your ability to use it as well as the software you use alongside it. If you aren’t sure whether you will continue to use it or get bored with it I’d say get a lesser model such as the Mpk Mini.
Daughter Loved it and it is a pretty good sound
Looks good
Nice keybed
Nice pads
Lots of knobs and buttons for controlling DAW ( Logic Pro x)
Portable uni
Bought this for my son. It was exactly what he asked for & he uses it daily. Product exactly as described.
A wonderful MIDI controller for the hobbyist in your life. Brings the creation game to a new level with it’s pre-programmed hardware controls.
This is my first keyboard of this size, and first time using pads, so this is just my impression. I wish the keys were a little more heavy, and I haven’t gotten used to using the pads yet. It feels like I really have to slam on them even at the highest sensitivity to get a sound. I really just want to be able to tap my fingers like finger drumming on a desk, but I’m sure I’ll learn the muscle memory required. I hadn’t fully realize that I’m actually picking up two instruments here and it’s going to take a while for me to learn, but the hardware works great other than my little gripes. Comes with a lot of software that I didn’t really need, but if you don’t have a DAW and a keyboard plugin then it’s nice that they include them.
I would definitely recommend fully weighted keys and a full size keyboard, and then maybe just get the drum pad separate IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT. A lot of people I’ve seen calling people who buy these stupid because it’s not full size/weighted. Well it’s also 4 times as expensive to do that, so, the choices for me were this or just continue trying to make piano noise with my computer keyboard/piano roll. This works much better.
Works incredibly and was just what I needed for a home production setup.
Great for piano players. I have gotten so much work done in faster time now that I have this. It’s awesome!
Very sturdy and well built. It was well packaged. I’m very satisfied
Lieferung schnell.
Versatile keyboard with a professional feel.I wish I got the 49 keys version though. This size is good for studio work only.
i can’t stop writing on ableton with this thing. never been more creative. great buy! The pads work excellent in my opinion.
This Akai Keyboard is of high quality and could work even for professional use.
Happy of my purchase.
Ps: The box arrived with shoe prints on it and in bad shape. Amazon should make sure that couriers are taking good care of the products.

Wow, just wow, the amount of usability is insane! The feedback and key feel is top notch!
I never usually write reviews but saw the negative comments on here and had to stick up for the mpk249. I’ve had it for a year now and bought it to upgrade from a mpk225. I really like it though. I don’t see why everyone is fussing it’s served me very well in writing music on ableton. The pads are really good and sensitive and the keys play well. I’m really glad I made this purchase and it’s served me very well. Def recommend.
Haven’t played with it too much. The construction is great and every knob feels good.
This here is a beautiful piece. Love the feel of the pads, the knobs feel premium, and the keys are a lot better than the ones on the impulse. Eight pads on the MPK225 may not seem like much, especially when compared to some other keyboards in the same price range, but they were adequate for me. Unlike most midi keyboards in this price range, it also has an internal midi clock. It’s a complete package if you’re short on table space. It isn’t very portable and if you need it for producing on the go, give this one a miss and go for the cheaper mini mk2. Also, this does NOT need external power unless you plan on connecting it to midi devices through the midi ports, without connecting it to your computer. The unpowered iPad connectivity is a welcome feature for those who constantly like to experiment with synths without having to turn on their computers everytime they want to. 4 stars.
Super amazing product. helps me make new beats and ultra music. Awesome Purchase!!
This is well made.. I made lots of research looking for the right product. From reviews and reviews, This was the best choice I could have made. Have 1 year with it. durable. By the way mines came with Ableton Lite.. a +
perfect for producing music. love the colors and quality. i’m not sure if it’s my program but sometimes there is a lag when recording in real time. probably my DAW.
Great piece of machinery!! I still have much to learn about music production and this will help me very much!
This this is great! Feels great, works great, and the price was just right. Feels heavy too.
My only qualm (not problem), is that I have to plug it into my iMac directly instead of my power hub.
Great device. I use logic pro X and it has a preset for it. I have not had any issues plus it looks real cool too. I would say definitely get this if you use logic pro X, it has been worth the money I spent.
U almost don’t need an mpc with this thing. Best midi keyboard period. Shipped super fast.
I brought this for my boyfriend as his Christmas gift and he is in love with it, i don’t regret buying this product for him!
I’m just learning how to make music and it is the most bang for your buck trust me no problems over here.:-)
Great product! But not what I was really looking for, I should have purchased the Irig Pros keyboard there really good and solid too…
I really like this midi controller and is easy to use and great for beginners. The first day i got it i instantly made a few beats easily.Overall a great controller.
Solid compact keyboard. Wish there was more tutorials/info on how to use it properly and to its full potential, and the copy of ableton lite in my case didn’t work but that is rare hopefully.
bought it for my daughter who is a musician that writes songs all the time. It’s a great starter kit for those who are interested in building a home studio. You can get a lot of this instruments functionality!
Great controller, however support for the software that came with it is limited and the drivers weren’t fully supported by windows 10. Fruity loops works great with it though and is very fun to use to produce music with.
Amazing playability and feels good. I’m still learning the ins and outs but this was a great purchase for my home studio
As a piece of hardware this unit is great. All controls are solid. It’s well laid out and the keybed is good for a unit at this price level. The screen is a little dated but I knew that going in and I didn’t need a fancy display. My only complaint is the manual. Akai assumes that you’re a pro or at least have deep familiarity with controllers like this. If you’re looking for simple step by step explanations for to how to do basic tasks, you won’t find them. You’ll just find technical descriptions for what each element of the control surface is. It’ll be up to you to actually figure out how to do things, which for me means figuring out how to make the various programmable knobs and switches do what I want. I think this unit is excellent value for price overall. Akai support is spotty. I sent an email and got a form response 4 business days later apologizing for the delay which was due to ‘high volume of requests’. Phone support was okay although the Rep I spoke to had to put me on hold and come back with an explanation as to how to program the DAW controls. I just don’t think they’re dealing with people like me that often.
The product, due to being shipped in such close proximity arrived in only 2 days. It was shipped same day, even as the order was placed in the afternoon. The seller makes it very important to take every order seriously and get them on their way as quick as they can.
It arrived in the original packaging, which I was very pleased about. The stock handling and care put in the original box was good, with styrofoam holding the product in every side. This made sure even if the product was dropped or hit something, the product would not hit or touch anything except the foam inside. A foam cover was also surrounding the whole product to avoid any dust, dirt, etc. to get on the keyboard until it is in the hands of the customer.
The product comes with 4 different softwares, and the serial code is provided in the manual. You can download these softwares when registering your product on the AKAI website via the serial key on the inside of the cover of the manual. Ableton Live Lite was include in CD form.
Setting up the product is very easy, it was automatically detected on Ableton Live and the preferences already set to use it correctly. There are a large amount of factory presets you can change or customize to your liking for over 15 different DAWs, or Digital Audio Workstations.
I was happy to find out the keys are very responsive, there is no locking or unwanted feeling when using them, and a high authenticity and satisfaction comes with them. There are quite a few buttons for virtually everything you’d need whether as a beginner or knowledgable music producer and audio engineer. Also 8 customizable faders and 8 customizable knobs. Many other options provided by the buttons are very helpful with making your music how you would like to make it.
Controlling, navigating, editing, and personalizing the controller is very simple, although if you are an unexperienced user in the MIDI world and controllers you may want to read the manual, it has very descriptive instructions on how to navigate the control panel/screen.
The pads are very nice quality, and have a very smooth feel. They are not COMPLETELY sensitive, if you put your finger on it lightly enough it will obviously not detect it much if at all, but that is not comparing to other pads, this is completely normal. They are very good pads compared to previous models, and the personalization for light settings on these makes it very pretty when in low-light situations along with the other lights.
The bus-powered USB is very fast, and there is a very small latency, basically impossible to notice, in my personal experience when using the AKAI MPK249. The response time is practically instant.
If you are looking for a new all-in-one MIDI controller, this is the one for you. It has a great price for the quality and experience it will bring you with producing your music. I love this product and am very happy with it.
Thank you for reading!
Great build quality, I’ve had it for over a year, and haven’t had a single issue with it. Customer support with Akai is also stellar.
LOVED EVERY SECOND I OWNED IT! The interaction with my software was flawless and it’s built like a tank! Key bed is a bit difficult to get used to and wasn’t my favorite. But the rest of the controller made up for it and I decided not to care!
Amazing quality midi keyboard, pads work well and the keys feel nice.
The best controller I have ever owned, and my studio looks like a museum. I might get the 88 key next.
Can’t say enough good things about this. ULTIMATE WORK MACHINE. This works with any DAW, you just may have to individually set up the midi controls. I use it with Mixcraft 7 (which is not a preset on it) but setting it up is suuuuper easy. I love the feel of the keys and aftertouch. I’ve read some complaining about squeaking keys, however I have had no trouble with this! Def worth the money. If you don’t really play keyboard at all then I’d recommend the 49. I play a little and this is just the right amount of keys for my range of playing!
The drum pads are great and have excellent sensitivity. That’s all I know how to use.
Key’s are superb (almost on par with my 1300$ electric piano), and the pads are extremely responsive. Along with all the other DAW controls and pre-mapped layouts makes this thing a joy to play and really improves workflow.
Great keyboard. My only gripe is I wish you could edit the sensitivity of the drum pads a bit more than what is available. Works excellent with FL studio, but further tuning will be needed within the program. Worth the buy!
what i like most is that this comes with ableton. i planned to buy ableton, and with this i didnt need to, and the compatibility with ableton is just awesome. you dont need to program anything.
I’d already ordered this item from another website and was awaiting a delayed delivery so checked it out here.
My heart sank after reading the bad review posted here. So now my mpk249 has arrived I thought I should write of my experience.
Firstly, with a few web pages help and downloaded from Akai I was able to get up and making music in just a short period of time. Very important for a novice like me.
Secondly the pads definitely do have velocity on them. I will confirm that the velocity levels are not amazing(at least by default). Gently tappingand progressively getting harder I could identify maybe 3 to 5 distinctly different levels.
With further tweaking of the global settings I should be able to improve upon that.
It’s certainly good enough to give sounds a more natural feel and for a novice like myself who is coming from analogous instruments to this new world.
I’ve fallen in love with my mpk249 in just one night and can’t wait to spend more time with it making sweet music 🙂
Very happy with this order . Came to Ireland in less than 3 days all good nothing broken .works like it should .
Like the feel of this keyboard.
Came with an Ableton lite disk but apparently the “agreement” was rescinded and Ableton declined the license key.
I now use this with the Propellerhead DAW: Reason.
This keyboard has a preset for this SW & many other DAWs so the buttons and knobs work with your DAW.
… except some of the knobs/buttons are programmed incorrectly for Reason.
This Reddit posting had the correct settings.

Finger pads sometimes have false triggers/extra MIDI notes record.
(have not dug into changing their sensitivity)
