The Drum Machine That Started A Music Revolution
As one of the most popular drum machines ever made, the SR-16 has been used by everyone from songwriters to live performers to remix engineers as their drum machine of choice. The reason is simple: it features a great selection of 233 realistic, natural drum sounds, offered both in dry form and sampled with sublime digital reverbs. Powered by Alesisâ exclusive Dynamic Articulation, drum sounds change their tonal content as they are played harder for truly realistic performances.
Fusing 50 preset patterns that were actually played in by top studio drummers, plus complete MIDI implementation, a footswitch input, flexible programming & editing features and velocity-sensitive pad buttons, SR-16 is so easy to use that you’ll be up-and-running and composing new music in minutes. Whether you need a song writing partner or an accompanist for live performance, turn to the all-time world standard in drum machines: the SR-16.
Works well
For performing in venues
Where stage space is a conce
can be battery operated too…easy to reset as well
Whether you are playing live or recording in a DAW the SR18 is a feature packed simple to use drum machine.midi in and out audio out etc.
Thickness….yes that is what I am looking for in a drum machine…thickness..,..what idgit put that category on a review for a drum machine…?
It’s a great sounding drum machine.quick learning curve…I use it for live gigs..I hook it to a volume pedal…the drum sounds are impressive..many many beats to choose from.
Relatively simple to use if you’ve got some patience and computer savvy. Great sounding drums and percussion, bass sounds are ok.
Cinque stelle meritatissime.
Der Alesis SR 18 berzeugt mich in allen Punkten. Bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Drum Computer. Kann ich nur weiter empfehlen.
I borrowed my friends SR18 and I just had to buy one. I prefer it and use it most as a stand alone drum machine. I have not mixed my music with a DAW as I didn’t buy it for that reason. I play almost alone now due to COVID and needed to expand my “one man band ” capabilities.
Excellent to help those who struggle with timing. Love that Amazon allows payment options too! Perfect !
Awesome Drum machine. Created with perfection. Almost every style you can find. Best in creating Rhythm. Love the product.
I bought this on a whim but have to say I am greatly surprised by the effectiveness and cleanliness of this product. My dental health has never felt better .
Rather than going with another older unit, we decided to get this one. We are still learning about all of the new voices and options, but so far we are pleased with this device.
I owned an original one of these, the sound quality on this version is much better.
It is easy to make your own beats + full song length arrangements if you like. Some of the controls are a bit qwerky but once you get used to them, the results are very good.
Its not the industry ‘go to’ drum machine for nothing!
However the bad points (but only knock off one star as its other points are great!).
The dangerous one first:
The guitar input doesn’t have any gain/volume control which means you have to have the guitar volume turned right down – think noise and hum.
But it gets worse, the guitar output level is not controlled by the master volume control as it should be.
So follow the correct procedure when connecting up – You know turn the volume output to zero, plug in amp or headphones and gradual turn up the level. Should be safe, but not here!!!! That guitar output is set at maximum irrespective of the master volume control, an accident and lawsuit waiting to happen.
This is a design beyond stupid – Did contact Alesis support but they say this part of the design – Don’t recommend using that as a defence in any law suites!
Second issue is the poor quality of the power supply – The amount of hum created is unusable with a guitar plugged in. Although in fairness other manufacturers also use cheap poor quality power supplies with the same issues (why!). Problem disappears if connected to a grounded mixer etc., a decent power supply or use the batteries.
Would I buy it again?
As a usable drum machine its the best around, now that I know the dangers of the volume control and how to resolve the hum issue, the answer is yes!
Old school here. Did not know new drum machines have bass you can toggle on or off. There are some programs that rock right out of the box. All you need is your axe, a killer tone and you can jam down to the bone.
This model (SR-18) is worth every penny.
Great product, as stated and with a fast delivery. Sounds are brilliant.
Che dire? Fantastica.
Been using the old version of this drum machine for years. This unit produces great bottom and sound is superior. The added Bass to some beats is fun to play with, but it is limited to certain keys. The fill switch when using the foot pedals is not on demand like older version. So, when ya need a fill it’s not there. I use this live, but still like aspects of older version as well. Still trying to figure out preset patterns that fit my songs when playing live.
This unit is very good it is a per you tube videos, and it came with its own power supply in with the price,
very pleased with it.
Very easy operation and programming, sounds good at every component. Seems a little fragile for outside use.
This drum machine has a great sound and is well made with clear instructions. Lots of good presets drum patterns and plenty of scope to create your own patterns, songs and save them. I’m impressed.
I love this drum machine with base and percussion you can mute change do what you want linked into my studio it’s great to use
Famous and favorite drum machine.
Excellent natural sounds of the drums consist of study recorded samples.
Purchased again to replace an old one bought in 1988. Longevity is good and product is solid. Only wish it had a lit metronome and backlighting. Would have gotten the upgrade, but pattern layouts/organization were awful and bass useless. Drum beats were excessuvely involved for solo performance. The SR16 has some dated beats, but is great for acoustic gigs where you just need a good backbeat.
Fr mein “FTF Audio LAB” genau passend. Gru, Holger Lotz.
My old Boss DR-660 died. So I got this guy as a replacement. The drums sound good and the built in patterns are okay. A good choice, if you want a classic drum machine.
Effetti programmabili. 50 campioni di bassi in aggiunta. Indisensabile in un home studio e in live session.
Bought as a Christmas present and he loves it.keeps him quiet!!
I like that it is very friendly for work on it. Use for the rhythm section of a vocal trio.
I’m only using the drums so I can’t speak to the bass sounds but the drum sounds are very adequate.
Have not had enough time yet to figure out all it can do but so far so good!
Programmed some old patterns I created long ago to add drum lines and create a couple new songs.
Thanks
All the items that I gave five star are excellent And no issue
Zosi system is all junk, they gave me all the run around, and at the end they replace me one junk with an other junk
That was total lost of my money, and time
I don’t recommend it at all
I hate them
This thing is Way smarter than I am……Great Sound !! It’s fairly easy to figure out…..Great sounding Patterns. The Only Vague thing about the Book it came with…..did NOT say how to get rid of the Bass Patterns……but Hey….Press Bass and Mute Button and it’s outa there….but still would be best to put it in the Manuel. But I’m enjoying the Machine…..Musicians and ‘ Toys ‘ go figure !!!
Haven’t really set it to full purpose what I have done works great.
Takes time to learn, add some foot controls, experiment a little. The documentation is a bit weak, and there isn’t much hanging around the internet either. But its easy to use, so just enjoy it!
Love it. I do turn the bass off as it’s a bit limited when you are jamming to a drum track and just want to play. The sound quality through my desk and PA is amazing. And unlike a real drummer, you can tone it down!
I now use this amazing drum machine as my default effect engine for my live gigs. I use a DrumKat 3.0 as drum pads thru Midi and it just sounds great. So flexible and easy to program. I’m very happy with my purchase. I had the SR16 in the past but this one is even better. The only thing I would change is the position of the volume knob.
I love the sounds this machine makes. I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in buying a drum machine.
Easy as pie to use. If you know how to use the SR16 and the HR16 there’s zero learning involved. Great for recording demos
The Bass is an added bonus. You can transpose to any key, but most often I mute it.
Anyway, if you practice / record rock, hard rock. blues, jazz, country, or latin guitar alone (by yourself), do yourself a favor and buy this drum machine.
I like it but this still is not easy to use. Have not yet found out how to record with it. I even got my brother who is a retired band director to help and the book was not helpful and even he could not do it. YouTube does not help either. If I can’t learn soon it will be on Craig’s List. So just a little warning.
Buon lavoro a tutti !!
Awesome drum machine, connecting this unit into my existing home studio was a snap and I have made good use of its multiple features, so much to try and compose with. It arrived ahead of the scheduled delivery, was packaged very well for safety and transit. I use Alesis for a lot of my mixer equipment as it is great without the great price tag!
My husband was very pleased with his new drum machine. Easy to use and good quality.
This is brilliant! Of course the item arrived on time and in good working order. Moreover the machine is really versatile.
his macinee is the best e z to op great sound whalt else could you ask for.
I bought this for personal use, to accompany my classical guitar exercises. It makes them more fun than using the metronome to keep time, and I wanted the practice in listening for the beat in the drum patterns. I set it up using PC speakers through the headphone jack, which limits the quality but is all I need.
I haven’t tried creating new patterns so I can’t rate that feature.
This met my expectations for what I wanted.
I have no fault to find with this so I probably should have given it 5 stars, but it is not something that I really needed, more of just something to make practice more fun, so I gave it a 4.
I purchased 2 machines from Sweetwater. Both from Sweden, both are of the latest technology and both were “expensive.”
I got the Elektron Machinedrum @ $1,199.00 and the OP-1 by Teenage Engineering @ $990.00 with travel case. Although I saved money on tax because of Indiana State laws (Where Sweetwater is located) both machines turned out to be a lot of B.S.
This time I really did a lot of homework. The Alesis SR18 (Although not the newest technology) is by far the best I’ve heard. From the moment I got it, I locked myself in the studio and have been replacing the crappy sounds on the other drum tracks (They sounded like mechanical drums) with the sounds of the SR18. They sound like “REAL” drums!!
In addition… besides the obvious array of effects and so on, this machine seems intuitive… It guesses where you want to go next and is right on target. So if you’re a DJ or a house push button guy, stick with the aforementioned machines. But if you’re a musician that doesn’t “JUST DO” Hip-Hop or dance music, then this is your best bet.
The back lighted display is very helpful, although some of the buttons are difficult to read when not in good lighting. I am using this machine live on stage and it’s working out well.
I can’t stop playing with this thing. All the options and even then adding the different drum sets to the various options there-in, it’s sweet!
And then adding the batteries for portability… get out of here! Sooner or later I guest I’ll get around to actually taking the OLD Rickenbacker out and practicing with it.
I like it and it works fine, but it is a little harder to understand than I anticipated. The manual is not a lot of help. In hindsight I should have purchased it locally so I would have someone to go to for help.
While I haven’t got my head around all the possibilities with this machine (in only 2 weeks), I found it really easy to start using it straight away. The quick-start guide is great, and soon I’ll graduate to the full manual !
The only evidence i could find that this was used, besides the open box, were a few notes on the cheat sheet. Excellent shipping packing. Amazing quality of sounds & programming for a “vintage” piece of equipment. Well done. Thanks.
I was extremely happy with the way the whole puchase went. Easy to order and delivered quicker than I anticipated. The product itself lives up to the hype. It will definitely fulfill my needs.
I never used a rhythm machine before and find that I don’t use it that much now that I have it. The sound is great and ease of use is ok. As far as giving me some backing, it works fine. don’t see myself getting into actually programming a song but it could be done if you had the time
If you are looking for many styles of drum patterns to find a groove for writing, this works pretty well for me. The drum sounds themselves are a bit unrealistic but the programmers created VERY usable pattern styles. Nothing too over the top. I use this for drum groove help on the road. Tempo change is easy. The rest I have to keep going back to the manual. Id give it a 5 if the sounds were fatter.
The late 90s had Loop intros to most songs & I couldn’t help but slapping some Trix N Da Mix. No Other than this Mac Engine Alesis SR18-Make your own loops & bass lines..Go Tricky use that Brain & Tap a Few more tricks under your Drum track from other sources..eg. If you have a workstation keyboard..Place this Mac under your sequence drum kit & you have Created a Rounded Bonus to your Song. You want to Create THE SONG for people to BUY, They Want BEATS A GOOD VOICE & MELODY. I got this for Intros or GAPS with STATIK ROBOTIX..so as you see-I use this Mac for other Reasons. Be Tricky with this Mac, I don’t use this for the whole entire recordings just TRIX..A Bit Here & There & Yo Going SOMEWHERE>>DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!
Definately an inspirational tool and has given me a whole bunch of ideas.
I really enjoy the fact that it can be controlled by footswitches and having the backlit-LED really helps you see what loop to play on any darkened stage.
I remember years ago, the very first drum machine I used back in the 90’s was an Alesis. Once again, Alesis has done an AMAZING job with the SR18. If you can’t find a drummer, this drum machine will do the job…and won’t argue with you either!!
There’s plenty of sounds and kits and options to tweak. If you can’t make this sound good, you’re not trying. I cut my teeth years ago with a Sequential Circuits Drumtrax and an Alesis HR16 and I don’t find the SR18 difficult to use. You will probably need to read the manual and keep it handy for reference, but I can’t imagine any modern drum machine being much easier to use.
I haven’t used the bass option, so I can’t comment on it. It would be nice if it was off by default, rather than having to turn it off every time I turn on the unit, but that’s minor.
It is well worth the money and if you hook it up to any Guitar FX Pedal you can do some even more crazy things with it.
If you have the money buy it. You will not regret it.
Maybe I’m kidding a little with that last point, but not by much.
Great product and service when coupled with the price a Real winner thanks Alesis SR18 Drum Machine with Effects Engine
-Chris
Title says it all. I needed a drum library for my ZenDrum and the sounds Alesis SR18 are great! I needed to work with a lot of midi and easily am able to assign any drum to any source. Good manual. After a day or so of getting of the learning curve it was very straight forward.
My only complaint is that I wish “velocity” could influence pitch. Maybe it can but I have not figured that out.
This is an awesome machine with tons of beats. My son has created numerous beats and has written several songs which are about to be published using this machine. It lives up to the exceptional reputation Alesis has earned over the years. Great investment.
This drum machine is awsome. you can program your own drum beats and then program them in order and it will play a whole song from start to finish making it easier to play a perfect beat all the way through a song. The maternome is great you can hear it fine on top of your drum playing. Worth the money.
I believe this to be the best sounding drum machine made today for the price, it is fairly simple to program, has the most real sounding drums has a nice fill feature… it realy looks cool and has large pads…it doenst save very well, seems once saved, the original is there forever… but still one can create patterns you can save in in cubase, magix or samplitude or another recording program once youve done your program to be sure except for future tempo changees could be off and funny sounding…
I have both the Zoom tr-223 and this and i feel the Zoom tr-223 to be more a Toy compared to the sr-18….but the Zoom can come back to previous patterns once shut off…Zoom has a little better sounding bass, but ill record my own real sounding bass with a real bass ….both can be used in your studio
The output is rather weak using line outs…Neither drum machine is perfect, but the Alesis is a more professioanl Drum machine in my humble opinion….Jim
It can be complicated if you want to go the whole mile and programme it rather than use the sample tracks, but it comes with a very thorough instruction manual. Plan to learn how to do most of the good things during a month of tinkering with it in your spare time. I bought it with two Yamaha FC5 pedals to work it ‘live’. (But it does work with other on/off pedals like the Yamahas as well.) This allows me to start stop and switch between A / B fills and A / B rhythms. You’ll need pedals like these if you plan to use this box in front of an audience – but you won’t need it for practice.
This is a great tool. And better than a drummer because it doesn’t have an ego, doesn’t need beer to fuel it, and I get to keep all the money from gigs. You can also program in Bass parts – and if you really get you head into it create midi files in Sibelius and drop them in. (This was my original plan if I hadn’t been so busy teaching guitar and gigging.) I have no doubt it would be possible to create bass lines and drums for any set list you may have. So it has enough mamory to load up many many whole tunes – so ultimately you can go on the road with this and play along with your own digital versions of yourself playing bass and drums – that’s got to be a whole lot better than using backing tracks.
If you’re on a tight budget or want something a bit easier to programme, try the SR16 – but that’s only drums, no bass line.
The weekend has just finished and I’ve only just started discovering the joys of the SR-16.
I’m completely new to drum machines, am in no way a drummer, and yet have found after just a few hours’ practice, that many of the functions on this lovely machine have become instinctively easy to remember.
I am now programming patterns that sound like real drum sequences (well, almost), as well as keying in bass riffs. When I jam along with my guitar, the sound is pretty complete, like having a solid-sounding R&B section, but in a little box on the table. I can’t wipe this stupid grin off my face.
The SR-18 has also got me looking up drum music online, so that I can learn more drumming theory. This in turn has got me counting beats like a slightly mad person in the corner of my living room.
Having read many reviews of this and the old SR-16, I must say I was still surprised by the fidelity of the SR-18’s drum samples and the simplicity of programming in rhythms. And yet there’s still so much more to master and discover.
Although I paid more than I would have done for a metronome (which I originally intended to buy to accompany my guitar playing) I am delighted I forked out that extra cash for this piece of kit.
The delivery service was excellent too – ordered Wednesday, arrived Friday.
Very happy.
Now the not so good news: It’s not easy to play patterns in real time on the key pads – I find I need to use the step edit function to clean up my real-time patterns. Also, I’m still struggling to understand the key sequences to adjust some parameters, and I find myself referring to the manual regularly. If there’s a logic to it then I can’t see it. I expect that these key sequences will gradually become second nature, but until then this is a niggle. It would be a great enhancement to be able to link to a PC with a full screen editor. For example, the editor for the Line 6 Pod range is excellent.
Conclusion: Buy it for the excellent sounding samples and useful onboard effect.
If you plan to use just the preset patterns this unit will be a breeze. If however you want to add the built in bass and rhythm functions and use this unit seriously your going to have to sit down and start reading the manual. I did look briefly at the manual but i don’t have the time or focus at the moment to give the Alesis unit the time it needs to be used at its full potential.
In conclusion this new model looks great, sounds great and is a great improvement on the previous Alesis SR-16. I’m looking forward to having the time to seeing just how useful this device can be. I can see this being a very good new work tool for many working musicians.
