Thickness….yes that is what I am looking for in a drum machine…thickness..,..what idgit put that category on a review for a drum machine…?
It’s a great sounding drum machine.quick learning curve…I use it for live gigs..I hook it to a volume pedal…the drum sounds are impressive..many many beats to choose from.

Relatively simple to use if you’ve got some patience and computer savvy. Great sounding drums and percussion, bass sounds are ok.

    Cinque stelle meritatissime.

I borrowed my friends SR18 and I just had to buy one. I prefer it and use it most as a stand alone drum machine. I have not mixed my music with a DAW as I didn’t buy it for that reason. I play almost alone now due to COVID and needed to expand my “one man band ” capabilities.

Excellent to help those who struggle with timing. Love that Amazon allows payment options too! Perfect !

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWe had the older Alesis drum machine and have used it for almost 20 years. It started having some trouble maintaining a consistent volume and needed to be replaced.

Rather than going with another older unit, we decided to get this one. We are still learning about all of the new voices and options, but so far we are pleased with this device.

I owned an original one of these, the sound quality on this version is much better.

It is easy to make your own beats + full song length arrangements if you like. Some of the controls are a bit qwerky but once you get used to them, the results are very good.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis has everything you could really want in a drum machine, quite easy to use and its nice looking.
Its not the industry ‘go to’ drum machine for nothing!

However the bad points (but only knock off one star as its other points are great!).
    The dangerous one first:

The guitar input doesn’t have any gain/volume control which means you have to have the guitar volume turned right down – think noise and hum.
But it gets worse, the guitar output level is not controlled by the master volume control as it should be.
So follow the correct procedure when connecting up – You know turn the volume output to zero, plug in amp or headphones and gradual turn up the level. Should be safe, but not here!!!! That guitar output is set at maximum irrespective of the master volume control, an accident and lawsuit waiting to happen.

This is a design beyond stupid – Did contact Alesis support but they say this part of the design – Don’t recommend using that as a defence in any law suites!

Second issue is the poor quality of the power supply – The amount of hum created is unusable with a guitar plugged in. Although in fairness other manufacturers also use cheap poor quality power supplies with the same issues (why!). Problem disappears if connected to a grounded mixer etc., a decent power supply or use the batteries.

    Would I buy it again?
As a usable drum machine its the best around, now that I know the dangers of the volume control and how to resolve the hum issue, the answer is yes!

Old school here. Did not know new drum machines have bass you can toggle on or off. There are some programs that rock right out of the box. All you need is your axe, a killer tone and you can jam down to the bone.
This model (SR-18) is worth every penny.

Been using the old version of this drum machine for years. This unit produces great bottom and sound is superior. The added Bass to some beats is fun to play with, but it is limited to certain keys. The fill switch when using the foot pedals is not on demand like older version. So, when ya need a fill it’s not there. I use this live, but still like aspects of older version as well. Still trying to figure out preset patterns that fit my songs when playing live.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersALESIS – SR16 CLASSIC 24BIT DIGITAL DRUM MACHINE rocks where it should….In the studio, in the home songwriting workstation or anywhere you build your craft. This was a Amazon.ca purchase in March 2017 that I made after using some software styled units that lagged behind and a early 2000’s version of a Boss-Dr Rhythm that wasn’t very user friendly! So then the ALESIS SR16 entered my mind. IMO, this unit rises to its top level when tasked with building song structures in the Rock, Hard Rock/Metal genres. With the ALESIS-SR16 DRUM MACHINE getting a 2012 new 16 to 24 Bit Firmware upgrade and slight renaming to become: ALESIS – SR16 CLASSIC 24~BIT STEREO DIGITAL DRUM MACHINE. I had the old version back in the late ’90’s and I can say the 24Bit version crushes the original. 1st off, is the superior “stereo” sound quality, it’s crystal clear. 2nd the original had some bombastic drum sounds that were awash in late 80’s studio reverb of the worst kind. The 24-bit doesn’t have that annoying tone anywhere in the unit. 3rd, is the much improved feel and pressure sensitivity of the programming pads, when your crafting beats for songwriting, it’s very important that the unit is reactive to the sound textures your exploring. Hit the pads hard or soft, the unit stays the course with you, unlike some USB/Software based models that sometimes are challenged to keep up. It says a lot about this Alesis series, when with the release of the SR18 Drum Machine, the many competition models, the ALESIS – SR16 CLASSIC 24~BIT STEREO DIGITAL DRUM MACHINE is still the best selling unit of all time.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have been using the SR18 for several months and love it. I am the worlds worst rhythm guitar player, I need a drummer, drum machine or metronome (boring). The sound is great, drum machine or not, I have purchased several computer-based drum machines, and they sound great, but I hate to spend the time to program them. The SR18 includes a wide range of excellent preset beats. But of course the real power is its ability to record your own beats. To be honest, I have not done that. The unit also provides a host of connections. So far I have kept it simple, connecting the Left/Right outs to my mixer.

The Bass is an added bonus. You can transpose to any key, but most often I mute it.

Anyway, if you practice / record rock, hard rock. blues, jazz, country, or latin guitar alone (by yourself), do yourself a favor and buy this drum machine.

Buon lavoro a tutti !!

I bought this for personal use, to accompany my classical guitar exercises. It makes them more fun than using the metronome to keep time, and I wanted the practice in listening for the beat in the drum patterns. I set it up using PC speakers through the headphone jack, which limits the quality but is all I need.

I haven’t tried creating new patterns so I can’t rate that feature.

This met my expectations for what I wanted.

I have no fault to find with this so I probably should have given it 5 stars, but it is not something that I really needed, more of just something to make practice more fun, so I gave it a 4.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersLast year I built my 5th in-home recording studio. I wanted nothing but the best state-of-the-art equipment and recording platforms.

I purchased 2 machines from Sweetwater. Both from Sweden, both are of the latest technology and both were “expensive.”

I got the Elektron Machinedrum @ $1,199.00 and the OP-1 by Teenage Engineering @ $990.00 with travel case. Although I saved money on tax because of Indiana State laws (Where Sweetwater is located) both machines turned out to be a lot of B.S.

This time I really did a lot of homework. The Alesis SR18 (Although not the newest technology) is by far the best I’ve heard. From the moment I got it, I locked myself in the studio and have been replacing the crappy sounds on the other drum tracks (They sounded like mechanical drums) with the sounds of the SR18. They sound like “REAL” drums!!

In addition… besides the obvious array of effects and so on, this machine seems intuitive… It guesses where you want to go next and is right on target. So if you’re a DJ or a house push button guy, stick with the aforementioned machines. But if you’re a musician that doesn’t “JUST DO” Hip-Hop or dance music, then this is your best bet.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI think that the missing factor in any review of an electronic instrument’s review is the reviewer’s level of aptitude and experience as well as their willingness to learn the instrument. I would say that my aptitude and experience for electronics hovers slightly below average, yet with less than 2 or 3 hours invested I was getting monstrous results with this beautiful drum machine. The quick start and reference manuals certainly had me up and running in no ( just a little) time. I’m extremely happy with it.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersAside from the manual, which needs a lot of improvement, this is a good machine with good sounds. One feature it has (which is not mentioned in the manual) is the ability to type in a tempo via the numbered pads. That is very useful for changing tempos rapidly on stage. The manual only lists two ways to change tempo – the dial and tap tempo function. Programming some functions such as changing the individual volumes of drums and cymbals can be very difficult to understand thanks to what I consider a poorly written manual. Where I have succeeded doing this seems to be by accident, and of course, it’s difficult to remember what actually worked.
The back lighted display is very helpful, although some of the buttons are difficult to read when not in good lighting. I am using this machine live on stage and it’s working out well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI picked this up for $210 through an Amazon partner which is $50 less then what you would pay at most other places. The choice was either this machine or the Boss Dr880 for about $ 250 more. I just need a machine to jam with and this does fit the bill. The Boss is a better machine however for my use the Alesis does the job. Programming does not seem that difficult, however I have not really done much thus far. Drums sounds are top notch — bass sounds are decent and work fine for me. My only complaint would be there should be more user patch settings available. 100 are ok for my purpose but it might come up short for live use. The preprogrammed patches are good but once again from what I have heard the Boss patches are better. In summary you get a lot in from this little box for the money it’s a great choice.

I can’t stop playing with this thing. All the options and even then adding the different drum sets to the various options there-in, it’s sweet!
And then adding the batteries for portability… get out of here! Sooner or later I guest I’ll get around to actually taking the OLD Rickenbacker out and practicing with it.

I like it and it works fine, but it is a little harder to understand than I anticipated. The manual is not a lot of help. In hindsight I should have purchased it locally so I would have someone to go to for help.

While I haven’t got my head around all the possibilities with this machine (in only 2 weeks), I found it really easy to start using it straight away. The quick-start guide is great, and soon I’ll graduate to the full manual !

The only evidence i could find that this was used, besides the open box, were a few notes on the cheat sheet. Excellent shipping packing. Amazing quality of sounds & programming for a “vintage” piece of equipment. Well done. Thanks.

I never used a rhythm machine before and find that I don’t use it that much now that I have it. The sound is great and ease of use is ok. As far as giving me some backing, it works fine. don’t see myself getting into actually programming a song but it could be done if you had the time

If you are looking for many styles of drum patterns to find a groove for writing, this works pretty well for me. The drum sounds themselves are a bit unrealistic but the programmers created VERY usable pattern styles. Nothing too over the top. I use this for drum groove help on the road. Tempo change is easy. The rest I have to keep going back to the manual. Id give it a 5 if the sounds were fatter.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWe have a Zoom Rhythm track that we have made dozens of songs with, but after many years it was starting to falter. My husband had been eyeing this one so we found it for a good price on Amazon (of course). “Wow!” is all I can say. So many more sounds and even more compact (yay digital!). You could literally set a party off just by playing some of the pre-recorded beats here. Now we are ready to take our music to the next level. Yeehaw!!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersWhen I first opened this I was really frustrated with how the song function worked, then figured out how the pattern mode work realised that it worked better than what I had expected Song mode to want. Also under the system setting you can (and should) disable the tempo changing with the pattern and also (through this is more to taste) to disable that the drum kits change with the pattern. Very highly recommend that you get two footswitches for it. I have two different kinds of pedals so is visually easy to tell which start/stop and which switches between A to B. If you have a multieffect pedal that takes MIDI CLOCK in, is very cool to set that option and have the Drum machine send tempo controls. This way with the A/B pedal you can control the tempo synch on pedal. I am using a Line6 M16, which is also awesome, but took me a while to fall for.
Definately an inspirational tool and has given me a whole bunch of ideas.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis drum machine is amazingly simple to use and has so many options to choose from…several types of beats with so many different kits to choose from as well!

I really enjoy the fact that it can be controlled by footswitches and having the backlit-LED really helps you see what loop to play on any darkened stage.

I remember years ago, the very first drum machine I used back in the 90’s was an Alesis. Once again, Alesis has done an AMAZING job with the SR18. If you can’t find a drummer, this drum machine will do the job…and won’t argue with you either!!

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI have a real drum set at home and all the VSTs I could ever use on my computer, but I often play live and sometimes I don’t have a real drummer available. I need flexibility live, so canned backing drums won’t cut it. This unit does what I need at a reasonable price. I’d never record with it and usually don’t even arrange full songs with it, but the ability to do A/B patterns, fills, and stop/start with foot switches allows me to extend or cut songs on the fly.

There’s plenty of sounds and kits and options to tweak. If you can’t make this sound good, you’re not trying. I cut my teeth years ago with a Sequential Circuits Drumtrax and an Alesis HR16 and I don’t find the SR18 difficult to use. You will probably need to read the manual and keep it handy for reference, but I can’t imagine any modern drum machine being much easier to use.

I haven’t used the bass option, so I can’t comment on it. It would be nice if it was off by default, rather than having to turn it off every time I turn on the unit, but that’s minor.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersIn my home studio, the SR-18 simplifies things because I use it for drums on most demo tracks, rather than going through the enormous set-up time required for miking acoustic drums. Bottome line: it’s simpler, better sounding, nicely balanced and panned. Sure, it takes a bit of effort and time to set the machine up, but once you have a drum set or two that you like, you’re off and running. One thing that makes it even more special is the user ability to set (and change!) tempo within a song. The bass patterns are immaterial to me – I’ll play my own, thank you. Experiment with this thing a bit, set up all the parameters and change whatever you don’t like, and you’ll soon have everything the way you DO like! Take the time to review the manual, and keep it close by for reference.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersOkay I know it’s not really that updated as the SR-18 has been out awhile, but I’ve been using an SR-16 from the 1990’s that was still not too bad. Love the tap tempo feature with foot pedals that both Alesis drum machines have. Makes for using on the fly very handy. Way more useable presets on SR-18 and much better sounds too. Like option of percussion tracks that go along with drums. It has bass track too, but I mute that since I’m a bass player. Only complaint I have is that the output volume control sticks out the back of the machine and is not as handy to get to as the SR-16. Other than that, I love it.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersOnly wanted to write a short review. I bought this in January and it took a little bit of work but I am now making whole songs, it’s really easy. I play a lot of different instruments but always struggled with drums. This makes creating drum tracks easy.
It is well worth the money and if you hook it up to any Guitar FX Pedal you can do some even more crazy things with it.

If you have the money buy it. You will not regret it.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersExcellent drum box. Not only does it have lots of built-in patterns, it provides the ability to program and record more. The library of effects is quite extensive. If you can’t find or afford a live drummer, this device will tide you over until you do. And if you have a live drummer who isn’t cutting the mustard, make him practice beside this tool to touch up his reliability.

Maybe I’m kidding a little with that last point, but not by much.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI purchased this machine about a year ago and it’s still as amazing as ever. If you are someone who likes to record music, this opens a whole world of opportunities; unlike other drum machines that sound robotic, this one offers touch sensitive pads which adds more feel to your music. I highly recommend this and if you want to hear it being used check out my youtube channel just search “Chris Luizzi” the drums you hear are from this beast. It’s a real blast, it has not just rock settings, but hiphop and techno as well. You won’t be upset with this purchase, I promise. 🙂

Title says it all. I needed a drum library for my ZenDrum and the sounds Alesis SR18 are great! I needed to work with a lot of midi and easily am able to assign any drum to any source. Good manual. After a day or so of getting of the learning curve it was very straight forward.

My only complaint is that I wish “velocity” could influence pitch. Maybe it can but I have not figured that out.

This is an awesome machine with tons of beats. My son has created numerous beats and has written several songs which are about to be published using this machine. It lives up to the exceptional reputation Alesis has earned over the years. Great investment.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have found this drum machine excellent and very usable straight out of the box. The rubber drum pad keys are slightly bouncier than I would have liked but are still very good. I am in the process of connecting the SR18 to a computer via MIDI which is proving slightly tricky, but that is probably me rather than a criticism of the machine. I was disappointed with the delivery service as it took about 4 weeks to arrive although it was over Christmas, however the supplier were only about 30 miles away (it would have been quicker for me to walk there and pick it up). I would definitely recommend the SR18 but would suggest you check the supplier’s delivery times and delivery methods before purchase.

This drum machine is awsome. you can program your own drum beats and then program them in order and it will play a whole song from start to finish making it easier to play a perfect beat all the way through a song. The maternome is great you can hear it fine on top of your drum playing. Worth the money.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersUPDATE 10-05-2013: Battery life …… Not much on this topic using batteries, but I recently have been trying some rechargeable batteries and found the life of them a little over 6 hours using 6 Eneloop 2000 mAh double AA’s and a “Powerex MH-C9000 Wizard” charger. Still a great drum sound the most realistic.

I believe this to be the best sounding drum machine made today for the price, it is fairly simple to program, has the most real sounding drums has a nice fill feature… it realy looks cool and has large pads…it doenst save very well, seems once saved, the original is there forever… but still one can create patterns you can save in in cubase, magix or samplitude or another recording program once youve done your program to be sure except for future tempo changees could be off and funny sounding…

I have both the Zoom tr-223 and this and i feel the Zoom tr-223 to be more a Toy compared to the sr-18….but the Zoom can come back to previous patterns once shut off…Zoom has a little better sounding bass, but ill record my own real sounding bass with a real bass ….both can be used in your studio

The output is rather weak using line outs…Neither drum machine is perfect, but the Alesis is a more professioanl Drum machine in my humble opinion….Jim

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersThis is just a huge sounding drum machine. Forget what they used to sound like years ago – this sounds like a real drummer – and a very good one at that. With the basslines added this machine can be used to back a singer / guitarist / keys player and you could go on the road solo (what I plan to do).

It can be complicated if you want to go the whole mile and programme it rather than use the sample tracks, but it comes with a very thorough instruction manual. Plan to learn how to do most of the good things during a month of tinkering with it in your spare time. I bought it with two Yamaha FC5 pedals to work it ‘live’. (But it does work with other on/off pedals like the Yamahas as well.) This allows me to start stop and switch between A / B fills and A / B rhythms. You’ll need pedals like these if you plan to use this box in front of an audience – but you won’t need it for practice.

This is a great tool. And better than a drummer because it doesn’t have an ego, doesn’t need beer to fuel it, and I get to keep all the money from gigs. You can also program in Bass parts – and if you really get you head into it create midi files in Sibelius and drop them in. (This was my original plan if I hadn’t been so busy teaching guitar and gigging.) I have no doubt it would be possible to create bass lines and drums for any set list you may have. So it has enough mamory to load up many many whole tunes – so ultimately you can go on the road with this and play along with your own digital versions of yourself playing bass and drums – that’s got to be a whole lot better than using backing tracks.

If you’re on a tight budget or want something a bit easier to programme, try the SR16 – but that’s only drums, no bass line.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersAlesis SR18 Pro Drum Machine

The weekend has just finished and I’ve only just started discovering the joys of the SR-16.

I’m completely new to drum machines, am in no way a drummer, and yet have found after just a few hours’ practice, that many of the functions on this lovely machine have become instinctively easy to remember.

I am now programming patterns that sound like real drum sequences (well, almost), as well as keying in bass riffs. When I jam along with my guitar, the sound is pretty complete, like having a solid-sounding R&B section, but in a little box on the table. I can’t wipe this stupid grin off my face.

The SR-18 has also got me looking up drum music online, so that I can learn more drumming theory. This in turn has got me counting beats like a slightly mad person in the corner of my living room.

Having read many reviews of this and the old SR-16, I must say I was still surprised by the fidelity of the SR-18’s drum samples and the simplicity of programming in rhythms. And yet there’s still so much more to master and discover.

Although I paid more than I would have done for a metronome (which I originally intended to buy to accompany my guitar playing) I am delighted I forked out that extra cash for this piece of kit.

The delivery service was excellent too – ordered Wednesday, arrived Friday.

    Very happy.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersFirst the good news: The SR18 has 500 excellent drum and percussion sounds covering a wide range of musical genres. These samples really do sound good. The SR18 additionally provides reverb, EQ and compression, and this represents a great leap forward from the earlier SR16. The 100 preset patterns, together with 50 additional patterns stored in user memory are varied and interesting, and a great starting point for inventing your own patterns. There are probably too many patterns dedicated to rock styles for some people’s taste, although that happens to suit me just fine. The bass synthesiser is perhaps of limited use for rock/jazz/blues/country but is wonderful for dance music. I particularly like the Mini Moog sounds.

Now the not so good news: It’s not easy to play patterns in real time on the key pads – I find I need to use the step edit function to clean up my real-time patterns. Also, I’m still struggling to understand the key sequences to adjust some parameters, and I find myself referring to the manual regularly. If there’s a logic to it then I can’t see it. I expect that these key sequences will gradually become second nature, but until then this is a niggle. It would be a great enhancement to be able to link to a PC with a full screen editor. For example, the editor for the Line 6 Pod range is excellent.

Conclusion: Buy it for the excellent sounding samples and useful onboard effect.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersPurchased from Amazon on Wednesday and arrived by Friday morning, so great service (fathers day present). The Alesis SR-18 is the new model with all the bells and whistles! Its probably got more features than I’ll ever use. Still having plugged in a set of ear phones and connecting 6 pencil batteries it didn’t take long to figure out the basics whilst wandering around the house.

If you plan to use just the preset patterns this unit will be a breeze. If however you want to add the built in bass and rhythm functions and use this unit seriously your going to have to sit down and start reading the manual. I did look briefly at the manual but i don’t have the time or focus at the moment to give the Alesis unit the time it needs to be used at its full potential.

In conclusion this new model looks great, sounds great and is a great improvement on the previous Alesis SR-16. I’m looking forward to having the time to seeing just how useful this device can be. I can see this being a very good new work tool for many working musicians.
