BLACK+DECKER GKC1825L20-GB 18v Chainsaw-25cm, 18 V, Orange
BLACK+DECKER 18 V Li-Ion 25 cm 2.0 Ah Chainsaw GKC1825L20-GB
The BLACK+DECKER 18 V Lithium Ion chainsaw is cordless, lightweight and ergonomically designed for user’s comfort of use. With an 18 V battery, it is ideal for logging, pruning, reducing windfall, preparing firewood and other general DIY maintenance tasks. The weight is evenly balanced thanks to the secondary bale handle, meaning it sits comfortably and securely in your hands. It also comes with in-built safety features which prevent accident or injury so that you can use the tool with confidence.
Ergonomic Design
The BLACK+DECKER Chainsaw is ergonomically designed to ensure that it is easy to use. At just 3.1 kg, this is a lightweight chainsaw, so it is easy to transport and manoeuvre. The light weight also reduces fatigue during prolonged work. The battery is positioned on the side of the chainsaw in order to distribute the weight evenly, resulting in a balanced tool that is more comfortable to use.
In addition, the chainsaw’s primary handle also has an over-moulded rubber comfort grip, which is also non-slip for improved security and stability. It also comes with a secondary bale handle which is clearly separated from the primary handle to make the chainsaw more comfortable to use and it is positioned to allow clear visibility of the chain whilst cutting.
The tension of the chain can be quickly and easily adjusted with the tool-free dial, which simply winds up to tighten the chain, saving you time and effort. The semi-automatic oil system is easy to use, simply press a button to oil the chain. The system is leak-free and there is a small window which allows you to see clearly when the oil needs to be refilled. The chainsaw can also lie flat on its side, which allows you to re-fill the oil with ease.
Lithium-Ion Battery
The chainsaw comes with an 18 V Lithium Ion battery, which once charged holds its charge for up to 18 months whilst idle. A full battery charge takes 5 hours; however, as Lithium Ion batteries have no “memory effect”, they do not need to be run flat before charging. You can therefore simply top-up the charge before using it. The chainsaw also has a state-of-charge battery indicator for convenience.
Lithium Ion batteries offer 30 per cent longer runtime compared to comparable units with traditional NiCad or NiMH batteries. This means that the BLACK+DECKER chainsaw offers on average 220 cuts per battery charge thanks to its 2.0 Ah battery.
The cordless design also gives you more freedom than traditional, corded chainsaws as there is no need to worry about cutting through cables, finding extension leads or filling it up with petrol. This also means that there are no harmful emissions.
Safety
The chainsaw has a lock off safety switch, whereby two switches must be pressed at same time to start tool, which removes any chance of accidental start. The primary handle also has an over-moulded, rubber, non-slip grip which offers improved stability and security. The chainsaw is also fitted with an anti-kickback chain for added safety.

I was in two minds about buying this saw as the reviews were mixed.
In my experience this is fantastic. I chopped up logs with ease. The saw is so light and went through the wood like butter.
Chain is sharp and solid.
Absolutely pi** easy to assemble and to tighten the chan no tools needed.
I used petrol saws in the past, and no it is not as powerful. It’s not meant to be!
As a log chopper it’s brilliant.
I ordered a bigger 20v battery which is 3.0ah (22) and with it & the 18v battery that comes with it chopped over 60 logs. It was still going when I called it a day. In regards to what it’ll cut – up to fire size – some of these I did were over 8 inch diameter, it didn’t struggle.
It uses standard fit B&D batteries (that fit drills etc) and so if you have a few of these kicking about you can saw all day.
The only problem is the battery, doesn’t last very long at all ,had to buy a couple of more longer lasting
Bought for light/medium use and worked well with 45 minutes of battery life.
I am a small female and dont have the strength to pull petrol motor cords, so chose this battery powered chainsaw instead. Its fairly lightweight but is powerful enough to cut through medium sized logs. Mine lasted around 50 minutes of stop/start actions cutting through wood before it needed recharging. Would recommend for anyone who needs a chainsaw that is easy to assemble and use.
Purchased this for random jobs including cutting fire wood, decking, chopping up furniture before dumping and felling some reasonably large fir trees. This saw preformed beautifully and cuts like butter. The battery life is good (I managed 40 decking cuts on one charge) but I recommend the fast charger and a spare battery or two if your intending this for an every day work saw. It’s allot safer that a petrol saw and you shouldn’t suffer any horrific kick back accidents it used sensibly. Since purchasing I have sold my 12″ petrol saw as I always used to view it as an accident waiting to happen – this saw is a great replacement.
This was purchased when my 10″ petrol chainsaw was stolen. Thinking I would go full battery I looked around and this came up as a good deal. I have used B&D over the years and found them to be a very good supplier. I have a large garden and this was intended to allow for quick and easy maintenance plus cutting up logs for the fire. First, it is easy to set up and use, one of the main reasons I wanted it. You fill a small reservoir with oil, slot in a battery, check chain tension and go. I tested the saw on some shrubs (branch diameter 10-50mm) and found that there was a significant amount of bounce and ‘chatter’ which does not give a clean cut. Thicker branches are better. (Due to the slower rotational speed in comparison to a petrol saw this can be expected, to an extent). Battery life was disappointingly less than expected however I deliberately bought spares. Chain adjustment and removal are simple. Annoyances. I always wear gloves when using a chain saw. The top safety catch (which needs to be slid forward before operating the on/off switch) has a nasty habit of trapping the glove thumb in it which limits the safety feature. Second, the push to operate oiler (why do B&D cheapen their designs so?) has a breather hole which expels oil, making your glove thumb oily. Not a great design feature. Finally, to mitigate the kickback B&D use a very thin tooth on the chain. Other manufacturers may not do so, therefore be careful in your choice of spares as that can lead to much more kickback and chatter. Is it a full replacement for a petrol saw? No. If you need to do say a couple of hours solid work then you will get through 4 batteries easy. If you are not able to charge them on site then it becomes very limiting (and the supplied battery charger is useless for quick charging). Would I buy another? Mainly for battery life and the amount of work I need to do, no.
Used it to clear out, trees blown down in the gales, cut through 8 inch tree trunks, impressed. Shame it was not for sale with option of extra battery. I did get a spare battery later.
A good and well made product, that, hopefully, I’ll be using for some time. It works well and is relatively easy to use. I’d have preferred the sort of safety switch common to the petrol, commercial chainsaws, than the awkward system used here. The main gripe, though, is the chain oiler system, which if it works at all, works badly. Oil leaks from it when not in use, and seems awkward and ineffective when the tool is in use. Oil, to a chainsaw is an absolute necessity, which I can attest to, having used them commercially. Witout it, results, in a very, very short chain and bar life. I have to admit to being a tad disappointed. An uncle of mine was once Chief Engineer to the UK branch of B&D, and his aim was complete reliability in use and function, which seems to have passed with him.
This a surprisingly good little chainsaw. It is very handy in the garden, and complements my larger chainsaw. The battery life is modest, but adequate for most small trimming and lopping jobs. I was pleasantly surprised at what it can go through. You might want to consider a second battery or a faster charger, but for bigger jobs I just use my mains chainsaw.
More powerful than expected – lightweight easy to use and well worth the money
Very good machine compact and easy to handle just what was required
This little chainsaw is so light and easy to use. Just the job.
This is a very good lightweight chainsaw. I’ve chopped medium tree branches and some fencing and this is a very handy tool. I bought a few extra batteries as the use life is not great with the single supplied battery. But overall a very handy chainsaw for smaller jobs.
Unfortunately, I will need to buy another one as some thieving person stole both of my chain saws and strimmer! But the use I did have was good
I bought a second battery and found this to be a useful addition, great for hard to reach outside places with uneven ground .plus good for cutting medium sized logs needed for the wood burner. I would recommend for anybody needing it for specific purposes or to compliment a larger petrol driven saw.
Very good and so much safer than petrol but the battery does not last long and takes a hour or two to charge. If you have a lot to do more than just one battery. But as a tool its great.
Has taken down a dead cherry tree and chopped it into logs. Cut tree with diameter of around 15cm. Perfect for what I need. Don’t forget to pump the oil every time you use it. Very happy — great value at 120 in Lightning Deals.
Lightweight and easy to use. Comfortably cuts 4 x 4 and 5 inch diameter logs. Drawback is a short battery life when cutting the larger pieces. I did around 35 cuts from about 2 inch to 5 inch diameter. Fine for me as I’m just cutting wood for a fire pit.
Good as a small chain saw. Clearly not up for big tasks – battery empties quickly and power is lacking. That being said, considering small jobs (I.e. branches) it is great. Advise you to have another battery at the very least….
Very easy to use lightweight cuts through thick wood easily
Supper for garden, battery not very strong but will see. Need to train it.
Easy to use ordered extra battery so that I can have one ready on bigger jobs, really pleased
UPDATE 21/5/20
Had to return this chainsaw as the motor started smoking and stopped working whilst I was cutting some 200mm 100mm garden sleepers for decking. I’m hoping it was just a dodgy one, because I really like this easy to use and effective machine. I like it so much I’ve ordered another one and hope this one lasts a lot longer.
Excellent stuff!
The 2ah battery it comes with lasts a fair while, but I’ve already got a B&D 18v drill and know that this chainsaw would need bigger batteries, so I invested in 2 x 4.0ah ‘energup’ LB4018 compatible batteries as well. I’ve cut up 5x 2.4m sleepers into 18″ & 24″ blocks and 4x 75mm x 75mm x 2.4m fence posts on 1 fully charged 4.0ah battery, before having to change batteries.
So well worth investing in the 4.0ah batteries if you can AND they fit in the rest of the B&D 18v range too.
It comes with 1x 10″ (25cm) chain & is easy to assemble without any additional tools. The 2.0ah batteries take 2.5hours to charge, the 4.0ah batteries take around 3hours to charge.
In addition to the chainsaw (which needs the blade to be installed before use), you will need a good quality chain lubricating oil (I used the same oil as I use for my petrol chainsaw). The oil filler cap is on the top of the machine, between thegrab handle & thumb trigger.
The only other accessory you might need, is a chain sharpening tool, if you intend to use this machine more than I have done.
I have photos of it in use, but for some reason, cannot upload them for this review.
The product itself of great; but the only downfall is the battery lifespan 20-30minutes depending…maybe Black & Decker needs to look into providing a longer life battery… but I must say;it’s a bit of a beast when cutting logs and I mean fairly thick ones;which does drain the battery quicker, but it did save me some time in the long run… quite impressed with it and I don’t regret buying it either;I would definitely recommend it…… it’s a great bit of fun for small jobs in your garden; even though I love my old trusty Petrol Chainsaw.. so using a battery powered one is new to me.. but definitely love it …. big thumbs up
I’m not a big user but just doing a few branches, several inches it was great. Not tried it on logs yet but no reason to suspect it wouldn’t do the job. I’ve used a petrol one before and this just seems a damn site safer. No more pinning it down with your foot and yanking the cord hoping it doesn’t spin out of control and take both your legs off. Turn it off without leaving the engine running as with petrol. Feels better all round.
I think the assembly instructions could have been better. I didn’t seem to get a manual just a universal sheet with a photos for idiots guide trying to explain a 3 dimensional assembly on 2 dimensional paper in a universal language. Unfortunately I struggled a bit with this concerned that hey this is a frigging chainsaw I’m setting up here!! But luckily it all worked out. A star off for this and apologies to Black and Decker if the guide to how to actually use this was in the packaging somewhere.
Check out other reviews for large logs and battery life. For my purposes it was great.
Overall great value. Bit jumpy. Battery lasts longer than I thought it would
Easy to use & handle but very underpowered. Takes a while for anything bigger than 2′ diameter. Was quicker to use hand saw
Easy to use, lightweight to handle; perfect for cutting up branches and trees
Light, Efficient and very easy to use. Have cut up many oak branches for my smoker and braai/barbie.
The chainsaw is worth using for non-professional garden work. Good performance. It shoild be noted longer time for battery charging as well as be minded tiny oil leakage from oil reservoir cap when the tool is tilted
My only criticism is the battery does not last long enough, and recharge takes about 4 hours. Apart from that a cracking little saw.
bargain price does everything you’d want it to do
quite pleasantly supprised what it can do and highly recommend i
Ive only used petrol chainsaws a few times in the past – I really didnt think this battery powered B&D chainsaw would would work as well. I was wrong – It works really well, I felled a 22 foot tree which was 13 inches thick (cut a wedge, then cut from each side) and it came down in less than 3 minutes. so absolutely no problem from a power perspective. However you will need a few batteries – I happen to have 2x18V 2mAh and with both i could Finnish the job (dissect the tree and cut up around 70%) I then needed to charge both batteries – One downside though! B&D only supply a trickle charger which takes around 12 hours, there is another fast charger available and I would recommend buying it.
Good machine just needs a better battery.will last about 20 minutes hard work , takes a long time to recharge , best leave on charge overnight .
Great little tool for triming 2amp battery lasts about 20 mins two batteries essential
Very easy to use for logging up to 5 inches diameter. It’s light weight is an advantage for carrying up steep slopes. It is important to keep the battery charged but it does as stated by the manufacturer.
Bought this chainsaw at the reduced price of 119 and am very happy. Assembly was easy enough, I charged the battery to full before first use, filled small tank with chainsaw oil and started using the machine. I am female and needed a chainsaw that is light enough, easy to handle and does the job. And I m not disappointed. The chainsaw is really well balanced and not heavy. While my hubby cuts big trees with a Stihl I cut smaller trees up to 8/9 inches with this25cm Black&Decker. Logging is easy too. The battery lasted over 40 mins of logging smaller trees. I also have a 4AH battery and I feel that the chainsaw works even better with this. It also lasts longer. With this slightly heavier battery the chainsaw is still well balanced. Charging for both batteries is quite some time with the original charger , only half the time with the fast charger we already have for another B&D tool. All in all: for this price a bargain and does jobs around the garden or smaller jobs in the forestry. I can really recommend it and would buy agai
Great chain saw , needs a long charge but works well .
Very light and easy to use a good power tool
Great tool, nice and light feel more in control than when using a petrol chainsaw
Powerful machine that holds it’s charge. Ideal for garden work and some serious trimming.
Bought this saw as the battery matched my drills runs as back-up to our large petrol models and so far has done ‘ as per the tin ‘ .
Yes it won’t do more than 20 mins cutting but I didn’t expect much more than that . On the upside it’s small ,light weight and can ride in the JOB with no smelly fuel . Used within it’s capability this is a good little chain saw.
Great second chainsaw for 3-4 inch branches and small trees. Didn’t expect this to live up to a petrol saw and it doesn’t but fine for small jobs and extremely light. Photo attached is 1 battery life’s worth of cutting.
just the job for the small fixes around the garde
It was a gift, well received and been in used by the recipient a number of times.
Cuts would slower than petrol as expected however it does the job.
Gives about half hour ish of cutting which is enough for me.
Would recommend
Battery doesn’t last long but fast and easy to use and very light and a spare battery is easy to ge
Very powerful but the battery life is a little too short ( 30min to 1h )
Great product for the casual user that wants to cut smaller to medium size trees.
The battery with this product also fits my grass strimmer and hedge cutter from the same manufacture
its good for around the garden. Battery is small so make sure you charge over night the day before use but lasts long enough. i mainly use for logging wood about the size of my thigh. i would recommend.
Excellent product, quiet, light, cuts well, replaces noisy petrol saw which was far too heavy, far to noisy, and a poor starter. Wish this had been available long ago when I have struggled with the noisy bastard.
Fantastic machine for the price. Performs really well. The biggest log cut so far was about 8 inches in diameter and it cut with ease. Light and easy to handle. As others have said, you need a second battery.
A very useful and easy to use piece of equipment.
Brilliant machine, quiet and light, just remember to order the charger to go with i
This does exactly what it says on the tin – it is a lightweight portable battery operated chainsaw with enough power to do the job.
I have been using chain saws for over 50 years and no longer use petrol driven saws for two reason – first I don’t use them enough and when it comes to starting after a lay-off they play up and secondly – even when they are in good nick I find the constant pull start required quite tiring and therefore dangerous
So for logging in the barn I use an electric chainsaw
I needed something to fell and trim some trees in my woods (11 year, 15 year and 20 year old woods with a total of say 4,000 trees). There are about 150 trees to be thinned out this winter and they are all a longish way from my house. So I bought this saw. So far so good.
Well made, very lightweight and extremely well balanced with razor sharp teeth which cut through wood like butter – this is simply superb. A delight to use.
So far – i have only had it two days – I have cut up (logged) some branches (up to six inches diameter) I took off some oak. ash and pussy willow trees. Effortless. I have also felled and logged one 15 year old silver birch about 15 metres high on one single charge.- amazing.
What must also be commended is the very clear instruction booklet. : it covers safety well, gives warnings about checking you have the right to cut or prune a tree and gives the clearest exposition of how to fell a tree I have ever read.
I will update this as I use the tool more during the winter but at the moment I am thinking I got a real bargain here.
EDIT : having had this tool for almost a month an update is useful. I have cleaned up one of my woods. Felled and logged 15 trees (they were about to touch some overhead power lines as well as a huge multi-stemmed willow which I can only reach when the level in the pond is low all of which has given me sufficient wood to keep my wood burners going for about three weeks. As wood is my only heating source for the main part of the house it is quite a lot of wood. Additionally – yesterday and today – have felled and logged one dead wych elm about 9 inches diameter. Amazing. Also cut up an old apple tree ( about 11 inches across that had fallen over and died – again amazing as both dead elms and apples are very hard and chain saws don’t really like them. This one cut through them effortlessly and impressively.
Later EDIT : Almost through the felling season in mid January and the saw is still going very well indeed – and has yet to be sharpened. I have bought a fast charger c/w a battery and another battery, That gives me a potential six battery charges in a day to use. So the 150 trees I earmarked for felling are down and logged – they were all ash trees and hopefully they will regrow – if the dreaded ash die back doesn’t get them. Many more have been ‘sided up’. Also one large Aspen tree where the top had snapped (20 ft up) due (I think) to woodpeckers practising on it,.was felled and logged. Most impressed that the saw managed to fell this as it’s diameter was more than twice the length of the chain. Went on to to fell a huge multi stemmed Pussy Willow, The base was nearly a metre across. All the stems were taken off with this saw and logged but the main trunk needed an Einhell 40cm Bar Electric Chainsaw to get through it.
Incredibly impressed with this saw and very glad I bought it when the price was more reasonable than it is now.
EDIT end March 2019 : saw is still going strong and has cut up a huge amount of wood since my last edit: All the batteries I have for it are still working well as well, Incredibly I have not even had to sharpen the chain. One of the best buys I have ever made.
The ash trees felled 18 months ago have indeed grown again from the stumps (up to 10 feet) and have been thinned to 3 to 4 good stems per tree. Coppice wood is brilliant and if ash die back keeps away these will crop in about five years.
The saw has been used to :
a) Raise the crown (side up) the trees in a 5 acre woodland – brilliant for this – but also had to use a “chain saw on a stick” for th higher branches
b) fell three more large trees – and log them as well as several smaller trees (thinnings)
c) clear up fallen branches around the village (I keep the wood and the saw just fits in the car with the logs
d) clear up another huge multi-stemmed pussy willow which will keep my two log burners running next winter (must be about 15 tons in the tree)
So… Still incredibly pleased with this purchase.
EDIT : 25 June 2019
Still going strong but I have sharpened the chain! Cos after all that use it I thought it needed a bit of TLC. More importantly the batteries are still going strong, I have found that provided you don’t force the saw, you don’t hit any dirt and you protect it all times the edge stays for ages. Forcing a battery operated saw also drains the battery after causing them to overheat. A sharp saw will pull itself into the wood with just guidance from the operator.
Works well but the battery does not last long so you need a spare one but you can get a “FLAGPOWDER” battery at nice price
Easy to set up and use.
My first ever chainsaw, was up and running in 10 minutes, test cut a couple of small logs and then then I was up a ladder chopping large tree branches down. Cuts well, as its not amazingly powerful the ‘pull’ isn’t too strong so safer for beginners like me (it cut through a large oak branch with no problems).
My only gripe is the run time and the slow charge time. I’d suggest getting a second battery. You can buy a genuine 2Ah B&D battery on here (BL2018) for ~32. You can also get a greencell compatible one, and there’s a 3Ah version (so 50% longer run time), its about 33% more expensive. They sell on amazon but found slightly cheaper via ebay 😉
I chose this saw for the reviews of others and the price cut, yes the product is light (I am 5 foot tall and weigh 8 stone so some of the saws are very heavy for me. However the saw was bought to cut logs, within 20mins the battery was flat and that was on a full 5 hour charge!!! I used the battery that came with the product so a 2.0AH battery. my advice buy spares with your product as you will need them.
Not used it yet but based on assembly instruction I can give only 4 stars.
Tools like this should have 100% clear instructions. Pictures and text should be one place.
Update: It is working really good (I still keep 4 starts because of poor instructions)

Very good tool it does the job and does it well I would recommend it and buy again
I have had my little black and Decker chain saw for two years now and love it more than ever, it does everything I want of it and more best chain saw I ever brought. I take good care of it it’s so well built it should last years.
I have had a black and decker cordless chainsaw for some years now and its been brilliant. The only let down is is that black and decker used the worst ni cad batteries the world has ever seen. I had about 10 18v batteries and only 2 or 3 were any good and they all went flat if left off charge for any amount of time. So I decided to get rid of all the old ni cad stuff and start collecting the new range of lithium ion powered tools and what a difference.
There is a vast improvement over the old stuff and the quality is much better. This chainsaw has a longer bar and a better chain oiler than the old one and also the chain speed is faster meaning the chain doesn’t bounce about as much. And being cordless its so much safer than a petrol one, especially for light use in the garden. It has coped effortlessly with anything I’ve tried it on as long as you don’t try and force it. Another benefit is the fact that all the new stuff takes the same battery.

Great size for chopping logs for my wood burning stove and good power for a battery powered device
Really surprised how powerful this is. takes on 4 inch trunks without trouble and can probably handle thicker but I have not tried that yet. Thoroughly recommended.
Absolutely fine for light work whether pruning or topping trees it is the right size and weight – was surprised how light it was. Really quick at taking side branches off and its quiet when compared to a petrol chainsaw which is the only other portable option. Charged up easily – comes with the battery and charger and of course a chain and some chain oil – some other makes you have to buy the battery & charger separately which is less convenient and makes them more expensive
Very good for the size. The 2.0Amp Battery lasted a good time (longer than I expected for the job I did) and for ease of use in small places was very good too. Make sure you prime the oil through to the chain, Best to do this with the BATTERY OUT pump the button on the oil fill cap with the safety catch and trigger pressed just like you are going to run it (remember BATTERY OUT for safety). Just got to see how long the battery pack will lasts now over the years? Let the saw find its own cutting pressure on the chain don’t press too hard, you will feel the pull of the cut and with a good sharp chain it is like a hot knife through butter. Very pleased so far.
This is a fantastic chainsaw. Very light and easy to carry and powerful enough to saw through quite large trees. Recharging of the battery is quick. Far easier to use than a cumbersome petrol saw.
