My hamster loves digging in this stuff. It makes quite a lot so personally i cut it into quarters and just soak a quarter at a time. It expands a lot once you add the water but it dries fairly quickly too.
This stuff is good but if you’re using it for reptiles and you want it to be quite dry then do not listen to the instructions. It said to use 3L of water but that made it soaking wet and would of been too damp for a snake. Luckily I bought 2 and only used half a litre and even then it was still a bit damp.
Great, easy to use compost, but for the price, I did expect more soil. You’d get double at the garden centre for the price you pay on here! Oh well, filled a few pots when I needed it, and was easy to make – just add hot water and wait before breaking up/mixing with trowel.
I’ve recently started using this because I want to move onto hydroponic systems and it’s great. It provides a well oxygenated medium, holds water well and supports growth. Coir has very little to no nutrients though so you need to provide them yourself, that’s not specific to this exact product it’s all coirs, so get some sort of feed to use with it. This is fairly cheap and even though it comes in a compressed block that looks quite small, it grows to a massive volume. Good value at the price.
I got the bigger pack of this ages ago, and it was really great quality soil. But it was difficult to break off chunks to use for indoor plant repotting, so I opted for the smaller pack! Much easier, same great quality and a good price (although the bigger pack is better vfm)
My plants like it, and I tend to mix it with perlite+orchid bark.
I would recommend this product.
First time using this, I repotted my spider plant. I didn’t need all of the block but found it difficult to cut off what I needed. Once cut it goes a long way, easy to mix.
In my experience the brick produces approximately 10 litres of soil. It is an inert growing medium (doesn’t contain many nutrients), which is fine for things like microgreens but you will need to add some compost for best growth of normal plants. Buying a big bag of compost for use as a growth medium is better value – you could get four times the volume for the same price.
I have never used Coconut fibre before, but I wanted to re-energise my old used compost and used this, its very easy to use, put the bar in a bucket and I added 4 litres of hot water, then it swells up and I mixed it and then added this and some other stuff to the old compost. Would use again.
This makes a perfect additional substrate for my hamster’s cage! She enjoys the texture and loves to dig in it. Although it did make a slight mess, it was fun to set up and came with a simple set of instructions to follow! It is a GREAT value for money, as once it had fully expanded, I ended up with a bucket full! I would definitely recommend.
I use this for my tarantulas they love it can keep it drier for my red knees or moist for my avics I and they love this stuff but it was twice the price of my local pet shop but they haven’t restocked on coco and they don’t know when but it does the job and as they need a clean up so be it I don’t mind spending more to keep them happy and clean.
Like other reviewers mention, this stuff really expands a lot which makes it great value for money. I used it in my dwarf hamster’s natural themed cage in a plant pot as a ‘digging pit’. Ignore the reviews which state it takes a long time to dry out – if you want to use it as a drier substrate for rodents to avoid mould and getting their fur wet, do not follow the instructions as these are for if you want the soil to be very wet and to retain moisture, as you would want if you were using it for a wet and humid creature habitat for reptiles etc. or as a growing medium. Instead, I broke off a third of the brick and added water in small quantities until it broke apart into a soil-like texture. By adding the absolute mimimum amount of water to the brick until it breaks down, it is really quick to dry out if you leave it on a windowsill in the sun or in a room with the heating on! I really reccommend this stuff as a great small pet substrate which encourages natural digging and foraging behaviours in rodents – just do not add a litre of water as advised if you want it dry to use in their cage/habitat!
I have used coir for compost before and have found it to be an easy way to get compost, particularly if you live in a flat or have no car to go to the garden centre. I had hoped to be able to slice a bit off to use as needed, but I found it very hard to cut even with my sharpest knife. I ended up breaking some off to use and the remainder is in a bag until I need to use it.
Excellent value for money especially if you’re looking to change the soil for the majority of your houseplants.
It’s easy to use, all you have to do is add water to it and allow it to soak it up. I initially followed the instructions on the back, however, quickly realised it wasn’t enough so I added more (it’ll dry up eventually). You get a lot per packet. I added just perlite to mine which helped it drain. I’d say 40/50 of my houseplants liked this mix. As a beginner enthusiast, I prefer cococoir to others as it’s not as expensive as others and dries out a lot quicker.
I have noticed over the winter, a lot of my plants have dried out noticeably quicker than in the summer so, I’m planning on changing my soil mix next year and adding in some sphagnum moss and houseplant soil. I think the moss will help retain some water as I’m currently having to water 2x a week for some. The houseplant soil will add some needed nutrients that’s missing from the cococoir, as I’ve had to supplement this using liquid food more than recommended. However, I still will use the cococoir as a base for the mix. I’m still learning so, a lot of mixing is an experiment to see which plant likes which.
Using this as a bit of extra enrichment for my robo hamsters! Goes great in a natural setup, looks nice, adds some natural smell and texture and nice for them to dig in!
Came in a day which is awesome. For the amount you get its a great price. Comes in a brick form which you then put in some water to make it loosen and expand. Easily expands to 3x the size, filled up a regular bucket to over 3/4!
If you are using it for hamsters/rodents as a permanent thing in their cage (I.e. not as a removable digging box) you must dry it out or it may cause mold and you don’t want your hamster getting wet either. Ive read it can set fire in the oven so I didn’t want to risk it. I also didn’t want to dry it outside as I didn’t want bugs getting in it. I’ve been putting some on a flat surface and putting it on the window sill turning it every now and again. I won’t lie it takes a while but I put some in my little peanuts cage yesterday and she loves it! She spent the best part of an hour sniffing at it and digging in the corner I hid a few meal worms in it and she loved digging them out.
Once some more has dried out I’ll try it with my other hamster but she’s a real digger so I’m sure she’ll love it too! The rest will be dried out and stored in a zip lock bag for future use and I’m convinced it’ll last me at least a year maybe more, and that’s with roughly 30cm x 10cm of their cages being this.
I would add that if you’re drying it out put in a small amount of water at a time when making it up so you don’t soak it more than it has to be – it’ll make drying a little quicker.
Very happy with my purchase. Would recommend for any animal that it’s safe for!
Decided I would give this a try as reviews seemed reasonable. Usual Prime package/delivery (excellent). Received a very light housebrick which after leaving immersed in at least 3 litres of water for over 1/2 an hour mixed into a clean, nicely textured compost that filled about 3/4 of a garden bucket. I have added about 12 trowels of growbag compost that I had to hand just to play safe. Why did I not give 5 stars? Only because it will be the end of summer before I see if the plants like this as much as I do at present. I have just brought the more economical 6 pack!
