Bought after we discovered a squirrel building a nest in our loft, seems our new neighbours thought it was cute and had been feeding it. Otherwise we only very rarely see them in our garden.

Disappointed at first since the squirrel wouldn’t go near it, despite being careful to handle only with gloves, still we left the trap set in our garden more out of hope than expectation. Three weeks of this and then all of a sudden the squirrel went in and POW, trapped! In the time between we’d tried rodent sprays and blocked access to our roof, but nothing would stop this very determined creature. Trapping was the only solution. Oddly peanut butter it didn’t go for, peanuts on their own it did.

Couple of notes, first night we left at on the ground and straight away caught a hedgehog instead (thank goodness it’s a non-lethal trap!), so we had to keep it off the ground after that. Secondly, if you want to be legal about it – as my partner perhaps rightly insisted – factor into the whole operation the 50 call out fee for your local pest controller to come humanly kill the thing.

Wasn’t easy to set the mechanism, took about 10 goes each time, but once set it generally stayed set. We put a plank and a heavy rock on top to prevent the squirrel from crawling around the outside too much and activating the trap before it went inside.

Took a while to get it set up as the instructions on the cage are not very clear but the video made it simple. Set up, put hate out (our friend liked soap) and 3 hours later he was caught. Husband set him free on a field. Hope there was only one but good to know it works if he had a family

I used this trap to catch squirrels. I used to enjoy watching them in the garden feasting on the bird food, but unfortunately they soon lost their appeal, when I heard some running around in the attic. I bought two traps, one for the garden and one for the attic. I caught one in the garden on day two. It took about five weeks to catch the one in the attic. Then I caught another one in the garden. The traps are very easy to set. I just bated mine with a piece of the fat ball, that I used to feed the birds. Squirrels love them. Have a bit of patience though. Some of the squirrels are very wise to the traps. They’ll go beside it, behind it but not always inside it. Depends how young greedy or inexperienced they are. All in all a very well made product. They’ve been out in all weathers and haven’t rusted.

My daughter’s pet rat escaped when one of our inconsiderate dogs nudged the back door open during cage cleaning… and ratty decided to check out the garden. The garden is pretty well enclosed, but hardly escape proof, and full of bushes and pots and all kinds of hiding places. Leaving food out enticed ratty back, but she was fast as lightning if she heard something approaching in her new jungle and was uncatchable. I ordered this on prime that same day, and hoped neighbourhood foxes and cats wouldn’t get her overnight. The trap arrived late afternoon the following day. I baited it with peanut butter, armed it, and put it near where I’d last seen ratty. Two hours later, and the fugitive is back indoors! Phew!

    Really works!

Worked fine after a few days. No other squirrels caught since then. Will persevere to stop them climbing into the roof space. At least it is quieter and less worrying since we caught number one – perhaps he hadn’t got round to telling his pals where he had hidden his nuts!

Purchased this item to trap squirrels, which it successflly accomplished. The trap was smaller than I expected but was well made and sturdy in construction. The lever to activate the trap is very sensitive and was activated by small birds meaning that it is essential that it is constantly monitored. Using it overnight must have attracted mice as the result was the trap was activated but there was nothing inside. Care needed when dealing with a captured squirrel due to the small size of the trap meaning that an angry squirrel can be close to fingers – best to tie a length of cable to the trap prior to setting up so as to maintain distance whrn carrying it. Setting up requires a little practice, and ideally, it should have a quick release mechanism. Overall, works well with practice.

Being a bit dubious, but needing to get rid of the squirrels we have been plagued with, I ordered one of these. The reviews were good and the only thing I had to lose was a few . But hey – it has been a huge success! I followed the advice on a few reviews and baited it with peanut butter… and in 2 days, we have trapped 2 squirrels! The trap itself is well made and very easy to set up, and all for a very reasonable price!

This trap has worked really well. We live in a rural area and feed birds daily and hedgehogs during their active months. Noticed some excavations by our back fence and a camera out at night confirmed at least one rat. Unfortunately had to stop feeding the birds as we noticed the rat on the bird table and underneath etc. Tried baiting this trap with some tinned mackerel at first, thinking it was strong smelling etc. But it looked like the rat was able to pull this off the bait plate and not set it off. So then put loose kibbled peanuts down figuring they would be eaten whilst in the cage. Bingo! Seven rats in five days. So yeah, we had/have rats in our back garden. Recommended and effective.

We are plagued by grey squirrels including at least one in our cavity wall which makes a huge racket dawn and dusk!!! Caught three so far. Overjoyed with every success. They really work. Leave out with a walnut on the bait plate for a few days so your human scent disappears. Now that food is getting scarce we hope the success rate will increase. Highly recommended.

Well, i’ve just caught another squirrel – might be the same one or another one – who knows. But i changed the bait from nuts to some of my daughters gingerbread man and it couldnt resist. This time i drove 5 minutes away to a wood and released it so hopefully it wont be coming back. The below comments still apply and attaching a piece of string or similiar to the door handle i would say is essential when releasing it otherwise your fingers will be way too close to its mouth and claws and they do go a bit mental when caught. But okay, i have to give it some credit, its caught another one and safely released. Much better and cheaper than calling exterminators.

    +++++

Out of the package i need to bend some metal for this to work as the release lever was not quite catching enough on the spring board that when stepped on releases the level. I just bent it slightly by pulling it towards the opening slightly and after that it works fine, so it nothing major.

I had to wait a few days to catch my first and only squirrel.Anf they go mental as you can imagine once you’ve caught them so heres the second thing they havent taken into consideration. You have to release the thing right and you dont want to have to put your fingers anywhere near the tiny handle they have for pulling the door open so you need to attach a piece of string to it so you can out your foot ontop of the cage and pull open the handle from a safe distance. No mention of this in the tiny instructions they give you so again something you have to think up yourself.

So, yes, it did catch me a squirrel, but i have more than one and im pretty sure these clever creatures have no figured out this trap is something they need to avoid despite the sweet smell of nuts.

Maybe i’d have more luck with rats or mice, but i have a squirrel problem and so for squirrels this cant get top marks.

Fantastic product. Received the trap last night. Set it up this morning in seconds, with a generous dollop of crunchy peanut butter. Placed the trap beside our hedge with a stone on top ( as recommended by other reviewers) and placed a few leaves over the top and sides.
Checked an hour later. Hey presto!, one grey squirrel trapped in the cage.
    Absolutely delighted with this product.
    Thoroughly recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersPrime Delivered same day, and it arrived just after our evening meal. Easy to set up, and located close to the bird table where both squirrels and rats were scavenging the dropped seeds and nuts.
Baited with peanut butter and a monkey nut or two, and hey presto, one squirrel captured.
Quick reset, no need to re-bait as the squirrel hadn’t managed to eat anything before it was humanely dispatched.
Following morning, and, winner-winner, one rat captured!
This trap is a simple way to capture vermin. Not sure how long the rat was in there for before I checked it this morning, but it wasn’t able to escape or do any damage to cage. Another quick reset, and I’m awaiting the next capture.
One quick note, I’ve put a concrete block on top of it to keep it weighted down and standing upright, as the vermin that is captured tends to thrash about a bit, so I don’t want it rolling over or moving about.

Overall, it does what it says on the tin (copyright probably required – lol)

It does what it says it’s supposed to do. It arrived on 17th and we caught the first rat on 25th. We used dog food kibble smeared with peanut butter as bait and placed it next to a fence where it looked like something had been using it as a route through to next door. It’s robust and easy to set. I was able to transport the rat to the country where it was easy to release it without the risk of coming into contact with the rat. It snuck of into the undergrowth.

I loved the fact that it did what i was hoping to do ie catch a rat for release away from houses. Rats are great survivors so it has a chance of surviving in the real wild rather than hanging around human areas for its food. Only a four star because of the initial difficulty I had setting the trap. The door was really stiff so I had to apply a bit of light oil to the door frame to get it to raise fully. Bingo!. 1st night no success, but early on the morning after the 2nd night there was a brown rat trapped within. I live close to the countryside so released it about a mile away from any houses. I’ll keep using it for a while just in case it had any pals that need to learn how to live away from humans!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFirst night the bait, pork fat, disappeared but the trap was not tripped. This was a bit of a concern. If the rat was big enough to reach the bait without touching the pedal then the trap was no use. They say “Necessity Is The Mother Of Invention” so I had a think. I decided to extend the pedal nearer the door with a piece of lightweight mesh so that, if it was a big rat, it couldn’t reach the bait without at least one paw on the pedal. If it was big enough to still reach the bait it was looking like there might be the need for a large dog!
On both the next day, and the day after that there was a very crestfallen looking little hedgehog in the trap at the regular checking time. He (or she) scampered away as soon as I moved away after opening the trap. This morning, having re-set the trap my wife called me to the window overlooking the trap in the garden. The rat had gone in to get the bait in broad daylight and released the door catch. The rat had only been part-way in when the door triggered but the door scooped him the rest of the way in. The rat immediately set about trying to chew the door off.
Job done, one less rat wandering about.

These are excellent. Easy to set and robust enough for intended purpose. I left them out with the doors closed and bait in them for a couple of days. The squirrels got comfortable with them (and shook the traps to get the bait out) and when I set the door open they walked straight in. It’s worth weighting the traps down to keep them stable when the mechanism is set. Two squirrels caught and released into woodland within an hour.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersOn the first night we baited with butter and some fatty snacks as we’d seen the rat taking fatty snacks put out for the birds. We went out at midnight and released the hedgehog we’d caught completely unharmed. On the second night we baited with chocolate peanuts thinking the hedgehog probably wouldn’t go for those and again went out at midnight and again released a hedgehog (so much for that theory) and rebaited with a small piece of bread. The following morning we went out at 6.30 and there was the rat complaining bitterly and trying to bite through the bars unsuccessfully. The mechanism is a little fiddly to begin with but once you get the hang of manipulating the bar holding the door open it’s easy and was mastered within a few minutes. My husband drives for a living so put down some plastic and newspaper with the cage on top and has taken the rat far, far away. We’ll continue to put the trap down for a week or two to see whether it had friends and family nearby. It did say that the instructions came with the cage but they seemed a little brief and unhelpful – until you remove the covering (you don’t need to remove it to operate so some people might leave it on) and then you find full and helpful instructions. It might be a good idea to put an obvious note to say that the instructions are inside the cardboard covering. The instructions do say to “see bait recommendations below” but I looked everywhere and couldn’t see any, although it’s well known that rats will eat almost anything so it wasn’t a problem. I would definitely recommend this product and would buy it again.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIn order to increase efficiency put the trap inside a bigger box. The bait should be put at the end of the bigger box then the trap. This way the animal will have to spend more time where the trigger is located increasing the probabilities of success. If you just put the bait at the end of the trap there is a possibility that the bait goes under the trigger platform making hard to activate the trigger mechanism.

However, the simple mechanism can be ‘tuned’ quite easily, e.g. by (a) carefully bending the metal loop on the door a little, so the hook can grab it a little more firmly (b) bending the limiter of the bait-ramp a little higher, so the trigger does not slip so easily and/or (c) bending the trigger lever a little closer to the ramp, so it does not slip past it without the ramp being depressed. Then a little peanut butter just outside the trap (hazelnut size, just enough to make the rat greedy to overcome its natural fear of the new trap) and a little on the bait ramp inside and the rats cannot wait to get trapped.

Golden Review Award: 25 From Our UsersI have waited until I caught my first rat before writing a review. It took me three weeks. There was obviously a rat in my compost heap. The council had tried rat poison on two previous occasions without success. I wasn’t happy about poison but that was the council policy. I read the reviews for this product which were helpful but in the end found my own solution. I feed my compost with leaves, grass and raw surplus kitchen vegetables. It was obvious that it was the vegetables that were attracting Rattie. I tried the peanut butter recommendation but no luck. What worked in the end, after a period of ‘familiarisation’ was to entice Rattie into the cage with a few small vegetables and put onto the trigger some very ripe cheese. That worked within two days. Rattie was released into the wild as far as possible from human habitation.
So, the trap works perfectly, it is all about operator effectiveness.

It works for squirrels, but nobody tells you how to kill the grey ones, just to kill them when you catch them.

We had scratching and running noises in our loft. We thought it may have been a squirrel. We bought this trap as it’s a humane one. It’s excellent quality and very sturdy. We put monkey nuts in it, and within a few hours of setting it, we caught a squirrel. No more sleepless nights!

At last a squirrel trap that can be set easily. Instructions could be bigger especially to say cut off the small plastic piecesthat holds in the back mechanism

Well, with peanut butter bait it’s 2 squirrels down so it’s working but dispatching them is a grim job.

Golden Review Award: 49 From Our UsersSet for squirrels and rats but caught a hedgehog on its first night. However, due to the very clever design, we were able to set the mite free and he went off unscathed. We also raised it on a couple of bricks to try to deter further prickly friends.

On Day 2 we watched as a squirrel ventured in – and the trap triggered. Perfect, and the vermin was then despatched humanely.

We now have 2 traps in different locations and both are awaiting their next pests. Design means it traps animals but not your fingers/ hands – wish we had discovered this contraption years ago.

Hints – 1) Raise the trap on two bricks to deter hedgehogs; 2) Place a brick on top to steady it (preventing any motion setting it off before the vermin can reach the bait); 3) wash the trap before use to remove any risk of human smell, then use disposable gloves when handling; 4) bait with peanut butter (not too much as the weight will trigger it before it can be used)

    Ten out of ten!

    Amazing for the price

This worked a treat. The first night out with a 10p size piece of bread with a blob of chocolate spread on it, boom there he was looking at me in terror. I felt a little sad that I had to now dispatch the rat. Setting the trap was very easy. I don’t understand the negative reviews regarding setting the trap. I highly recommend this trap and it’s ready to go again. I’ve only seen 1 rat in my garden, but you never know.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersExcellent humane rat trap.
I baited it ( peanut butter and chic chip brioche) while it was secured open for 3 nights, and the food disappeared each night.
Night 4 same food put in and by midnight a young rat caught in trap.
I placed the trap tight up to his hole,
We covered the cage with a towel and took him to an abandoned building by woods and released him.
    He sustained NO INJURY
    Fab product.
My only quibble would be to add some cord to the opening door to ensure your hands are well away when the trap is opened.

Very pleased with this, I used it to catch a squirrel that had got stuck behind our fireplace after coming down the chimney. It proved ideal since it was small enough to allow me to open the flap at the back of the fireplace, insert the trap into the chimney, close the flap and leave overnight. The next morning I was very pleased to come down to find a caged squirrel. The fact that it had spent 60 hours in my chimney by that point no doubt had something to do with why it took the bait so quickly. Based on other peoples suggestions I used walnuts covered in peanut butter which allowed me to ‘glue’ them to the trigger plate, along with a couple of tangerine segments. Result – a squirrel free fireplace and a free squirrel (I couldn’t bring myself to ‘kill it humanely’).

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersDespite being sceptical about the product from some reviews, decided to purchase and fight the annoying plaque of squirrels we have in our garden.
100% success rate so far (4 in a week)…for best results put crunchy peanut butter spread CLOSE TO THE REAR END OF THE PLATFORM, not on the place where the label is ( the blighters only lick it if you do as they don’t rest their feet or body on the sprung platform !). A thin spread of bait seems to work better than a large mound. Also put brick or weight on cage to stop it moving too much. Best Buy ever…!!!!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersDelivered next day. Ready assembled and easy to use but beware there may be sharp edges. Using nuts as bait I caught two squirrels over three days. The creatures were quite stressed but calmed down when the trap was covered (with an old towel). Check the trap regularly as I also trapped an inquisitive robin who ignored other food in front of the trap to take the bait. No harm done and safely released.

It did the trick. within two hours of the initial use the first vermin was caught, the second pest was trapped 24 hours later. there were only two pests to apprehend so job complete in less than 2 days. Result.

Worked a treat, I had to conceal the trap with a bucket half covering the trap, but sure enough the Squirrel entered and was humanely trapped. I took too a local park and to release I stood the cage on its end with the door facing up. Then use a stick to open the trap door and the Squirrel made a dash for the nearest tree. Excellent value – I originally paid my local coucil 170 for 3 visits and their trapped didn’t catch a thing so this product is highly reocmmended!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA bit fiddly to set,and needed a little adjustment with some pliers. Once set;and suitably camouflaged with grass and twigs etc., and loaded with peanut butter,it enticed the rodents well. So far,we have caught two hedgehogs, and ……… the errant squirrel, thank God.He went bonkers, and tried to eat the bars, but to no avail. I didn’t have the heart to hurt him,so I covered his cage with an old towel, which calmed him down, and then drove him several miles away and, carefully opened the trap near some trees. He came out like an Excocet missile. Once again, peace returns to our garden. Many thanks.

We baited the trap for 2 days, to encourage the squirrel into it, then set it and caught the squirrel within half an hour!! Now we can sleep at night as it was getting into the roof above our dormer bedroom window and keeping us awake. It worked perfectly.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI placed this in the roof space after hearing scratching and gnawing for a while. So far I’ve caught, what originally thought were four mice, but now I think are young rats and one adult rat. Obviously you can’t catch more than one at a time so you may need to supplement with spring traps. I’ve now got to find out where the blighters are getting in! The trap is easy to set as long as you are careful and works well as explained above.

    It works!

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersAfter a rat decided to take up residence behind our insulated kitchen walls, i wanted to have a go at solving the problem myself before paying the 180 our local council was asking.

I researched products on the web and this trap was highlighted as a good buy. This was the best price i could find. The trap was delivered really quickly (which was great as hearing the sound that this rat was making every night as it chomped it’s way through all the insulation i’d painstakingly fitted was driving me crazy).

We baited the trap with some dog meal biscuits that we knew the rat had been taking and put it in the area our pet dogs feed bowl used to sit. First night a piece of meal at the entrance had been taken, but the rat hadn’t ventured in far enough to take the meal around the trap trigger.

The second night, i tried some bird seed and voila, the next morning, one trapped rat.

Now the tricky bit – we didn’t want to kill the rat. Luckily we live near some moors and so planned to take it uip and let it loose to fend for itself as best it could.

This trap is more tricky than certain other more expensive traps when it comes to releasing a live critter. This is because altho the handle has a plate to protect hands from any nippy teeth, releasing the trap door involves getting fingers too close to where the rat can exit – which is too risky. There are other traps that have designed this in – but they cost upwards of 80 in the UK. However, with a little forward planning we’d thought thro a solution before hand and this worked fine.

Basically, we tipped the trap on end and then cut a number of lengths of wood that fitted through the mesh of the trap. By gradually inserting the pieces (kind of like kerplunk in reverse), we trapped the rat in the bottom of the trap, so it was unable to get anywhere near the release mechanism. With the rat safely out of nipping distance, the door was opened (i added a little piece of gardening wire to hold the door open so the rat didn’t trip the trap again once the door was opened).

Then, putting the trap back horizontal, it was just a case of sliding out the lengths of wood from the side of the trap – ie well away from the exit of the trap/nipping zone.

Result – one rat free kitchen (sorry UB40) and one rat hoefully living happily up on the moors, out of harms way.

Of course, if you’re not bothered about euthanasing rats/squirrels, this is no problem.

Overall – for the price, great value. The trap is robust and resisted all attempts by the rat to escape whilst in the kitchen and on the way up to the moors. Reasonably easy to release (as described above) if desired,

    hope this helps
