I bought this as I have an existing 3 external monitor setup that I wanted to use with my laptops. Note that this is 3 external monitors and doesn’t include the laptop screen. This is an important and subtle distinction, one that I missed myself.
If you run 3 external screens, two of them will be mirrored. You won’t even see the other screen in the setup and there is no way to do it. The details for this dock does outline this but you need to be paying attention. They speak of a triple screen setup and show an image of the laptop and 3 external monitors. However, in that image it does show that two are mirrored and the 3rd unique screen is actually the laptop screen. The documentation in the package confirms it.
That aside the product was plug and play. I’ve used it on two different laptops without issue and can seamlessly switch them by swapping a single cable. There is pass through power if your machine is powered by usb c – most new machines will come this way but check before buying! I also added an Anker usb 3 hub as I need a few more for all the peripherals.
Only just set it up so can’t speak to longevity but so far I’m impressed. There isn’t a lot of heat from it either, in fact it is less than the hub I’ve replaced it with. Keep in mind I’ve not had it long so that may change in the future.
If you’re looking to setup a couple of external monitors and use your laptop screen then this is a great option. Most people won’t be looking for an external monitor setup as large as mine but if you are, this is not the droid you are looking for!
