This axe is a work of art and looks to last a lifetime or two! Feels great in the hand and is tough as nails. Put a good edge on it and chop away! I also recommend getting the American Bench Craft leather sheath and axe holder for your belt. All made in the USA!

*NO I don’t work for ABC, I’m just really impressed with the quality of their American made products. 🙂

Blade came sharp with little to no blemishes. I’ve used for kindling and small pieces of wood for breakdown. Performs well and feels balanced and I feel confident that it will last for decades with proper care. The sheath is too tight and I doubt it will last a few years with normal use but for now, it’ll protect the blade and it’s user.

Beautiful, well-made hatchet. Razor sharp. Stainless steel. Stacked leather handle. Balanced. A tiny bit heavy for backpacking, but, otherwise, a great camping hand axe!

I just bought the Estwing and so far really happy wirh it. The picture shows 2 inch branches on a large tree that I was able to easily limb in 15 minutes. It is a somewhat heavy yet very trust worthy hatchet at 13-14 inches that has power behind the extra weight. Compared to my Fiskar hatchet, this is quite heavy but each has their own job specialty.
This Estwing comes with the lacquer finish over the leather wrap. I heard it may eventually crack allowing unwanted moisture to seep in, so the moment it arrived, I sanded every but of it off as suggested with sandpaper(youtube for instructions). I moisturized with mink oil(nestfoot is suggested everywhere so hopefully this wasn’t a mistake on my behalf). The leather handle feels way better than the lacquer and gives perfect grip on a bare hand.. wirh that said, the metal butt did cause a hot spot on my hand after doing this 15 min job. A leather glove may be the way to go. In Canada, this cost me $70 which is a steep price, but it’s been tried, tested and true..and has a leather handle with a full metal body. Can’t ask for more. It’s worth the purchase if you’re on the fence. In my opinion, Fiskar is just a bit more value for the money but without any sort of class, which this makes up for hands down.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese have not changed in decades. I bought one of these for my Dad over 35 years ago and they are identical. They are for light to medium kindling. Some on here whine about it not being perfect. But it is only a hatchet. Not a piece of jewelry. And then the ones who complain that they damaged or chipped it. Yet they conveniently omitted the fact that they were playing Daniel Boone tring to throw it and split a tree. Or they pounded on it as if it was a hardened steel splitting wedge. Once again … it is a LIGHT DUTY HATCHET. For splitting average kindling. It will last for a very long time as intended, “UNDER NORMAL USE” !!!

It took some work to get the sku stickers off–I had to use goo-gone to strip the adhesive–which is something to make time for if you are gifting, but otherwise it’s great. The leather handle is so much nicer than the rubberized handles, it absorbs vibrations in a much more pleasant way. With my level of casual use this will probably last me a lifetime.

This hatchet has a super attractive look to it and feels well made. Metal all the way through the handle is something I enjoy to avoid having to replace handles. Had crossed paths a few times with this hatchet thinking it would be out of my price range and then finally used it in a hatching throwing session and opted to look into it. I wa pleasantly surprised that this thing was super affordable. Purchased immediately and haven’t looked back.

My family has 3 of these. They are the sharpest longest lasting blades on a hatchet that wont break the bank. The $25 hatchets will dull and disappoint. The extra $20 is well worth it. Dull blades are dangerous, we have used one of our Estwing hatchets for 20 years and it is still sharp.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a great looking and feeling hatchet. I got it for my off road kit and I’m pleased with is size and blade cover. My only complaint was it was not sharp at all. A few minutes with my sharpener though and it was shaving. It was not trail ready so if you buy one be ready to give it an edge.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSure, you can find a hatchet for half the price but this has outperformed the cheaper models I’ve used.
Seems to be constructed well. Would be nice if a leather sheath was included.
You will need to sharpen this before use if you want it to perform efficiently.
The back end of the sheath is open which was nice for pounding stakes.
The only downside with this hatchet is the handle is slick! If you are you using in wet conditions or have sweaty hands, be cautious.

Very sturdy construction. My father had one of these (which he had for years, and which I think he still has and uses), so I decided to buy one that I knew would last. A bit heavier than I anticipated, but that’s due to the solid construction of the hatchet. Glad I went with the leather model. Some real nice heft to it.

I used to own a Estwing hammer until it got lost. Looking for an axe I remember back to the quality of that hammer so I decided to purchase the axe from Estwing. Do not regret this decision at all. The axe came sharp, well-balanced, looks great with leather handle, and the protective sheath is quality. Spend a few extra dollars (actually thought it was a very reasonable price) and get something that will last a lifetime plus you are buying American, supporting jobs!

People, like me, buy Estwing products because they are well designed, well made, they last. This hatchet is a good example of this. I bough my first Estwing hammer in 1974…still buying Estwing products. It is a choice, not just buying it because it was there or there was nothing else there.

The product arrived exactly as pictured and described on the order page. As with all Estwing tools, it is perfectly balanced, sharp as a razor and feels very natural in your hand.

I have owned Estwing tools all my life (60 years now). My kids took most of them and when I moved to Indonesia, I struggled to find tools that were even remotely as good, but couldn’t. I ordered a framing hammer a couple of years ago, and now I’ve got my hatchet, which goes on every hike I take.

Every Estwing tool I have ever owned is still in service. I have never bent or broken one, and I have given them all very serious workouts. These are generational tools and I highly recommend Estwing to anyone who values quality craftsmanship and absolute reliability.

And I really enjoy the looks my tools get from Indonesians who have never seen anything like them. In fact, I have given several hammers out to my crew heads as rewards. You won’t be disappointed.

Good value for the price. I like that it’s all one piece of metal. No it didn’t arrive without a couple tiny imperfections but since I’m going to be beating it into things I didn’t mind like some other reviewers.

The only negative thing I would have to say is the steel could be a little better. It needs a better edge from the factory. An experienced person will have no problem putting/keeping an edge on it though. Considering there are hatchets that go for hundreds of dollars, this would have no problem holding it’s own. The curved handle has a very comfortable feel.

I first bought a Fiskars 378501-1002 X7 Hatchet and thought that I was doing something wrong and that was why it took so much effort to chop thing wood. Then, I bought an Estwing Sportsman’s Axe and realized it was not me. I was shocked at the difference. I love this one. It cuts/shops great, and the handle feels so natural. To cut the wood into smaller bits for a rocket stove, this product is great.

I love the leather handle on this axe I always wanted. I understand you must like how your product stands out among all the others in appearance. Pride and quality must come first and yours has that it’s evident. May I offer a suggestion , what’s with all the pesky stickers? To remove them I started with my fingernail, then with a little water and dawn detergent and a non scratch pad, then some light oil and some fine steel wool always wiping it off with paper towels, there is still a residue a shadow that still remains after all that. Seems a ashamed for all the trouble you went to polish the steel that after the 4 stickers I tried to remove it looks a little crappy. Other than that issue I’m not all together disappointed. Talk with your Q and A Department.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI first saw this on an episode of “How Its Made” and I really liked what I saw. I looked on Amazon and was happy to see that I could buy it here. I looked at the reviews and I was troubled to see all of the one star negative reviews so I waited for over a week before buying it. The axe also had mostly five star reviews so I thought I’d take a chance and see what I would get. Well, maybe I was lucky but this axe is Absolutely Perfect !!!! It is beautiful to say the least. It is sharp and there are no blemishes of any kind. The handle is really nice. I may add leather handles of this type to some of the things that I make. I would highly recommend this and when it comes to reviews… You have to evaluate the source… I always look at the reviews but sometimes people can be over critical of the smallest of things. I have left a lot of reviews and sometimes they are five stars and sometimes they are one star. This is definitely five stars! Take a chance. You can always return it if you are not happy with it. Enjoy…

I’ve had the 14″ model for about 18 months and it is an excellent camp tool. It holds its edge very well and the size and weight make it perfect for processing wood and stripping the bark from limbs for projects. No, I would not split rounds vertically with it, but for splitting rounds horizontally or to make a cut to drive in a wedge it’s great! Since there’s no eye I don’t mind batoning the pole to process wood or using the pole as a hammer for lighter duty work. It is a camp axe, it’s not designed to fell trees nor be used as a sledge hammer. The edge is very easy to keep sharp and if you give the handle time, think new baseball glove, it becomes very comfortable. When I’m harvesting wood for a project or for a fire, I carry this axe, a silky saw, and a knife. If you understand the limitations of a 14″ camp axe BEFORE you buy one, you’ll definitely be pleased with this one.

My Estwing hatchet is a quality, American made product, and a HD nylon head-sheath is well made and fits perfectly! Past reviews have commented on a very thick web thickness just behind the cutting edge. Apparently the Estwing factory was listening, as my hatchet had a little less included angle at the cutting edge. I personally would like to see the cutting edge tapered back another quarter-inch, which wouldn’t degrade its strength much at all! A super robust product.

Pretty, durable, and cheap. Not the best camping hatchet you can get, but very good value for the low cost. The steel is apparently softer than European options, but that also makes it easier to sharpen. Made in the US.

A must have if you are camping and processing firewood. I also got the Lansky puck to sharpen the blade.

Small flaws in steel, along sharpened edge. (See my photo.) So I’m concerned the thin sharpened edge may be more prone to chipping during normal use. But I have tools to repair if it does chip. Seems like a forging error. Otherwise, its designed well & seems solid. Leather handle looks nice, but is lacquered. So it is probably going to be slippery if user has sweaty hands, or in rain. Sheath seems well made, thick material.

I put this thing through hell the weekend it arrived. Chopped plenty of wood for a fire while camping, and beat the back of it with another heavy piece of wood to split logs. I was throwing it in to a tree just because and missed more than I hit it, but the hatchet holds up fine. So far I have no complaints other than a small roll where I hit a knot (easily fixed with a concrete and a sharpening puck.) Still sharp, still amazing axe/ hatchet or whatever. 5 stars all day

I really like the thin profile of the head. The previous reviews appear to have been implemented by QC, because I didn’t find any of the issues found in previous reviews. I was pleased with the factory edge. I finished sharping (honing really) which didn’t take long at all. This is well worth the price. Even if I some day acquire a European carving hatchet; I’ll always have a place for this Estwing as an econo axe, because I’ll be selective with using any $150-$200 hatchet.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a really good budget option for the occasional camper. I had a really nice axe, you know, they type with the fancy Scandinavian name that’s more sophisticated than I am. Unfortunately due to work travel and medical issues I gave it to someone who would get more use out of it. So I got this lil guy when I planned an outing on short notice. Amazon delivered fast and not sure how many uses I get out of it so cheap was nice.

The full Tang doesn’t do you any favors in the weight department but it does make it tough and durable. It will fatigued your arm from weight and vibration with prolonged use but I just needed it for small quick tasks so it was fine for me. If you need an hatchet for prolonged chopping or heavier work this might not be for you. The super flat profile of it makes it a great lil chopper and splitter. Since there’s no hole in the axe head it’s ground supper flat. The grind on mine was in even and sloppy in areas. Nothing that would affect the performance necessarily but just rushed and not great cosmetically. Weight, fit and finish, fatigue…those maybe some sacrifices you make for such an affordable hatchet, but if you are just an occasional camper with modest wood prepping needs this is a very serviceable tool that won’t break the bank. I would be prepared to sharpen before use though. The factory edge was pretty poor and the grind was uneven, but a few minutes with a sharpening stone put a hair shaving sharp edge on it. If I had the time to camp like I did a few years ago I’d be more picky and probably look for a better option. But these days I don’t get out much anymore and for prepping kindling and hammering tent pegs, this guy’s is a great cheap option that looks snazzy with it’s stacked leather handle.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI was 10 yrs old when I got my first Estwing. That was in 1956. This new one is exactly the same. Beatiful, and built with pride. My first one was used to cut down trees bushes and other offending objects while running through the woods of South Florida. This is the hatchet to have. I have been using Estwing products since my grandfather introduced them to me, and I will always prefer them to other tools. Has a full length steel handle with leather bands. Would be shocked to learn that one broke during normal use. Other hatchets with wooden handles cannot stand up to this one. If you want a hatchet for throwing or camping/bushcraft, save time, money, and frustration and just get Estwing from the start.

I needed an axe that could be easily carried into the woods. The cover can be looped through the belt. The Craftsmanship is evident in the use of materials and is well balanced for an axe. Can be used to chip off hard to get limbs or the create an aiming point for an undercut.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFor starters, maybe I got lucky because the handle and rivets look excellent. The edge looks good and has no dings. There are some very minor scratches on the axe head, but I’m OK with that because it will get more once used.

What I am surprised about is the length. I purchased the 14 inch axe, but it’s only about 13 inches. Out of curiosity I then looked at the length and the 12 inch axe and it’s 12.5 inches. I realize that the stated length may not be exact to the actual length, but didn’t expect it to be off by an inch. Especially when there is only a half inch difference between the 14 and 12 inch versions.

Still love the axe!!! Just wish they would call it a 13 inch and not 14 inch.

Fells VERY sturdy has a nice grip and isn’t overly heavy but also not to light,I am pleased with this and anything I’ve seen estwing make

Also I’ve seen some comments about how the metal is not even on both sides but the reason for that is because it wasnt made cheap and quick when something like this is perfectly even that means it was eather made in a mold or made by computerized grinding the unevenness shows that it was made by a person rather than a quick and cheap prosses

Bought this to look like I knew what I was going at a group camping trip. You can’t split a log with it, don’t try. All I could manage was shaving a big stick for kindling. I have zero complaints. It also looks great with the nice steel head and multi-toned leather handlewraps. I feel this is a quality product that will last the rest of my lifetime.

This is a very well made hatchet. The handle is leather with a polymer overlay and sealed. The metal seems to be of good quality and the perfect heavy weight. But the best of all… IT’S MADE IN AMERICA!!!! I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of EVERYTHING being made in China. Such pisspoor quality! I’ll always spend the extra few pennies for our superior workmanship.

As expected, the case it comes with is garbage. Get a blade cover and ring. My preference.

I had needed a small hatchet and come across the Estwing brand and thought I would give it a try have used the hatchet many times and holds up well I did put a better edge on the blade with a diamond V knife sharper now it cuts like going thought butter. It’s a Estwing product and quality is there would recommend this hatchet to anyone looking for a great hatchet for camping or like me cutting big limbs off trees in our pasture.

Great blade. Comfortable handle. Quality sheath. Best Axe I’ve bought. I’ve stopped wasting my money buying cheaper import stuff. Buy quality once to last your lifetime and more.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersLo que me gust: el hacha es made in USA…

Great value hatchet. Main complaint is the leather handle has a lacquer or a similar finish over the leather. Any perspiration or moisture results in a very slippery handle. The finish is a bit of a curious choice.

I love this hatchet, So much so that I have 3 of them. One for home. One for my camping gear and one in my hunting stuff. I don’t ever want to forget it at home so I make sure I always have one.

I use the one at home ever week or so to make kindling. I have probably used my home hatched 150 times and it will still slice my skin if dragged across it. When and if I lose or break one I will for sure immediately replace it! Great product… don’t trust the bad reviews of people trying to chop oak trees down with it and cut through nails.

Aun no la uso en cambio pero se siente de buen peso y el filo que trae es suficiente, la calidad no es la mejor para un producto hecho en EUA pero suficiente para lo que costo, creo que la relacin calidad / precio es bastante buena en general y cumple con lo esperado

I saw a How it’s made on this company. Made me proud. I like it a lot better than my fiskars hatchet, it seems very high quality. It’s a beautiful piece so it’ll make you respect it and take care of it. If I were splitting hairs, I wish the handle wasn’t quite so covered in hard clear coat of some sort. I’d rather oil up the natural leather that it’s made of. But….I love it and it will likely outlast me.

I love this axe, it is full tang, well made, stainless, and pretty. One of the best deals I could find for something quality.

Just needed a sharpening. It’s part of my emergency kit for back-roading in my truck that can double as a hammer in a pinch. Feels good in the hand and is the perfect size for tossing in the tool box.

Nice little camp axe. Balance is a little to be desired. Handle is attractive but “slippery”

I gave these as a gifts after engraving a design. I was happy with the product and how the engraving turned out. The axes have a clear coating but I don’t know why you would remove it unless your bluing like I did. I have has several small hand axes both for use and art and these are by far the best for the money.

This is an exceptionally well-balanced camp hatchet. I prefer the stacked leather grip, the same as on my Estwing rock hammer. Well-made in USA.

Great hatchet. maybe the best. It is really sturdy with the all metal handle. I hope they stop using the annoying sticker though. it takes forever to get rid off and it leaves that stupid residue.

Came out of the package sharp, ready to cut. Sheath is better than expected. With a little time spent on removing the stickers, I have truly enjoyed the chopping power and handling of this. Great purchase!

I love the weight and feel of this hatchet. I basically cut kindling for home and camping and this hatchet is perfect for the job. The blade holds its edge well and can be easily sharpened. I love that is one piece and feels solid in your hand.
I agree with a previous reviewer that lightly sanding the handle to remove the light finish and refinishing with an oil based product will preserve the handle and prevent it from getting rot or mold. The original finish will eventually wear and the leather will soak up water like a sponge. Which will cause rot. I would recommend this product to anyone interested in a good quality camping hatchet.

We bought this a birthday gift for our 10 year old son. It’s a great looking piece. Something not basic. The weight is perfect. Comes with a nice cover for the blade.

We’re using this as a camping hatchet. So basically all we need it to do is hack up some firewood and pound tent stakes into the ground. And this is perfect for those jobs. This thing feels good in your hand. It’s well made and sturdy with a nice grip. I’ve only used it on one camping trip, but I’m confident in the quality of this thing. Provided I don’t lose it, I shouldn’t have to buy another hatchet for a very long time.

It’s a good hatchet for the cost, but it requires doing some of the work.
I held it out of the box and knew within seconds that the leather grip was not going to work for me. I did as other reviewers suggested, which was sanding and treating it to improve handling. I don’t really understand the design choice there. The hatchet also came with minor blemishes along the handle and blade, but it wasn’t anything that was going to get in the way of using it.
I also took a whetstone to it almost immediately and found improved performance. My blade wasn’t dull, but it wasn’t finely tuned either.
Overall, price point met the results.
