Pricey for just a few pieces. It is an expansion that DOES require the original mansions of madness or the second edition full game. This box does NOT come with enough to play a game without the origional.
An awesome game. The app works brilliantly in that it os a true co-op game. Quick and easy to set up and clear away and it is really immersive. We have played 15-20 times in 4 months and love that each play-through is completely different.
We have been blown away with simple and fun this game is -right from the first session. A brilliant combination of board/role play/computer game that takes over as DM and lets you all work together to explore and fight evil.
Very immersive with spooky sounds and events running smoothly on the excellent APP.
I worry that some older games will now feel a bit clunky and obsolete!
Not sure about the figure base system though when it comes to painting etc.-some bases are huge and rather unwieldy.
Having said that all materials, cards and figures are of a brilliant quality.
I debated paying this much for a game-I just wish I had bought it sooner!
2 of the 3 Scenarios were very fun. My group didn’t enjoy the defector scenario as much. It might be more fun with more players but with 3 it didn’t really feel satisfying. I still felt it was worth it with just the two other options.
I bought this for my husband for Christmas. We have a board game night every month with our kids and friends. This game is great. It uses an app and brings a whole new level of fun.
The price seems high, and it is, but this game is exceptional. Artwork is good, minis are cool, game board tiles look great. Despite only having 4 scenarios, replay value is good because it can change up the maps and monsters in a scenarios from one session to another. Cool game. Highly recommended.
Love the app interaction, I’d suggest using a laptop or tablet instead of phone. Also using some speakers for the ambient sounds is not necessary but makes it more interactive.
Love the way the app works together with this boardgame. Takes away the hassle of a game master, and allows the full party to enjoy the scenario’s. Despite the app randomising, there’s not that much replayability once you finished a scenario, but with the expansions this should be alright.
I’m a big fan of Lovecraft and the other Fantasy Flight titles in this genre (Arkham Horror, Eldritch Horror, Elder Sign) so this was a no brainer for me. Lots of theme, strategy and use of a tablet app which is extremely well done. Best of all, I got the game for $55.99 on a lightning deal. Probably the best deal I’ve ever had on Amazon!
Super fun for two people. We played with five and that was fun as well. We ended up buying clear acyrilic disks and based the minis on them because the black square bases are weird and the minus don’t stay on. Using an app is required to play this game. A laptop or large tablet would be preferable. It seems like there is about twenty hours or so of content for the base game. There is some “dlc” that doesn’t require a physical expansion to add content, but does cost a small amount.
Fun game. My wife have played it several times. The mysterious are the same but the map changes up. This game will beat you if you let i
I really enjoy playing this game.
If you play the same mission again it does change slightly which is nice as some missions are hard and need play them over again to try and complete.
It is really fun game but it only comes with 4 scenarios. You can replay the scenarios but it would be better if it came with more especially at this price. The packaging leaves a lot to be desired. They could have provided at least a basic divider or bags.
Bought to use cycling, this has a large capacity with lots of pockets, but is lightweight and packs small. Seems strong so far and there are reflective strips as well as the red colour to make me more visible.
Intuitive rules so begginers can join in, good selection of characters, items and spells. the app is very user friendly and really helps with the immersion. 10/10 would recommend
What a great and immersive experience, gameplay is fun and quick to learn. My only negative is that the base game only comes with 4 scenarios on the app, the rest are DLC or expansion content, could have used at least 1-2 more included in core se
Excellent quality of the components (as fantasy flight is known for). Hours of fun, engaging game play. Is naturally a difficult game and meant for the intermediate to experienced board game player. WORTH THE MONEY. I know it’s expensive but the interactive play with the app/computer program is worth the money. Any Arkham/Lovecraft fan who’s into board games will love it.

Love this game and the interactive app that goes with it. Draw backs are that there are so many expansions and the app displays games for those expansions as well as this one. Also, all games take longer than estimated time listed at least from this version and you want a BIG space for expansion as you build the board. Kitchen table should do nicely but you may be moving your individual items around to make room. We used the floor. Really fun. Failed to beat the board twice before a third round got us a twist ending. Very fun and playable solo because you can play multiple investigators.
This game is amazing. Never have I played a board game with such ease and fluidity. Easy setup and take down and with the ever growing game scenario being produced on their app it’s no wonder why this game gets such high praise. Don’t hesitate if you love a game with action, mystery and a good story. Definitely top 3 board games for me of all time.
Took me two years of umming and ahhhing to finally buy this game and I absolutely adore it. Felt minis weren’t great quality but the stories are so emersive it’s not a big deal for me.
Bought this for my 24 year old for his birthday. He has spent the last ten hours studying rules, gameplay and YouTube tutorials. Insanely rich content!
The game is perfect if you like storytelling and RPG, but prepare yourself, you gonna read a lot of complex instructions.
Great game so far, based on one playthrough. Be prepared to either make your own inserts or buy one of the pre-made ones as there is a lot of stuff with little room in a suprisingly big box. The app is needed to play the game, and once you get used to it actually adds a lot of atmosphere to the game. Like the old VCR/DVD adventure boardgames of old, but a lot better. The minis are pretty good, although made of soft bendy plastic not resin ( if they were this game would be double the price i guess). They need glueing to their bases, otherwise you spend a lot of time fixing them back on. They will look better when painted anyway.
Can’t comment on re-playability yet, but if this gets played several times a year (especially at Halloween) then it’s work here is done. Still reckon the price point is a tad high for what you get, but the accompanying App is free, so not too bad.
Pros:
-Awesome detailed dynamic maps
-App is very impressive and is effectively a digital dungeon master in that it creates the story
-Great setting and atmosphere
Cons:
-Fiddly, somewhat poorly made figurines which can be very problematic to keep on their bases
-App doesn’t tell you when it’s your turn which seems like it could be an easily added feature.
-App seems to suggest you place things in the wrong part of the map quite often
-The scenarios seem like they would be better conveyed by one person who reads to the group, this could be suggested as a way of playing in the manual
Overall: A very engaging game with a lot of content for small groups of people who don’t mind spending some time learning the rules. It feels like if you mixed Cluedo (Clue), with Dungeons and Dragons and then put it into HP Lovecraft setting.
Love this game!
There’s so many different elements to it and every game is different because of the different scenarios the app throws at you.
Only reason why I didn’t give this game a 5 star rating is because you can only play 1 game at a time. We have a large friend group hence bumping into this issue if one group hasn’t finished their game.
Another great expansion from Fantasy Flight Games. My wife and I love playing this game and it’s fun to see how they update the stories and mechanics of gameplay. The figurines are beautiful and the tiles are terrifying as usual.
This is a fantasy game for 2 players or more, and uses an interactive app so that each time the scenario is a little different. The rules seemed complex on first reading but after the first game we got to grips with it. The pieces are nothing special (just plain grey plastic, so I suppose they could be painted, Warhammer style) but the detail within the gameplay is superb. There are a few scenarios on the app that you can play from the outset, in varying degrees of difficulty, but some of them require extra payment to unlock which I found frustrating having paid this amount of money for the game to start with.
Gameplay takes place over lots of different board pieces, such as the library or Alley 1, and depending on the scenario you’re instructed to use different board sections. We’ve played 2 or 3 of the games, and not won one yet – which is a bit frustrating! SOmetimes the games are several hours long – you can save progress in the app, but of course you have a whole game of pieces set up so you either really need to finish it in one sitting, or have somewhere you can play and leave everything out until you next return to it.
Overall though, this is an immersive fantasy game that is one of my favourites with it being a co-operative game (so players work together). Now all I need to do is win one…
A little tricky to play, but super fun! Just read the rules and don’t get deleted by the tutorial alone.
I love this game. It’s a ton of fun! My favorite thing about it is that every time you play it, it is a new experience. I also had a blast painting all the figures so if you are a crafty type I really recommend it. I do find that people have a hard time understanding the complexities of the rules the first time around, so if you are looking for an easy-to-learn experience I am not sure this is it.
The game is great however one of the figures is missing which is really disappointing especially as it is an expensive game to begin with but it isn’t stopping us from playing the game
We are still in the process of learning the game but it is what it says. Not bad on price and showed up on time.
I really like the addition of an app to keep the game different every time. It really improves the replay value. the only problem i have with it is the inability to go back or undo a change or mistake on the app. also only about 4 different missions are unlocked with the core pack. cant wait to get my hands on a few expansions, just wish more missions are unlocked with a single expansion instead of having it spread out so much. but the gameplay is engaging, fun, and i really love the puzzles.
Super fun game with alot of play time. id set aside at least 3-5 hrs for a game though.. its not for the faint of heart or casual players.
…for those who like to play on a team. Expansions add more adventures. You need to think and work together to win and most games come down to the wire. A real challenge.
This is the most fun I’ve had playing a board game in ages! If you like horror themed games, or have an affinity for Lovecraft then you will not be disappointed by this game. Even fun playing solo, but obviously best with a group. My D&D group use this game as a break in between games when we start to get burnt out on D&D and it’s a great breath of fresh air.
Bought this for my husband for his birthday. Great game with lots of replay. We did the first mission several times with different people and we’re amazed to see all the little differences. Have since bought two expansions and will continue to play.
This box is much larger than I expected, even larger than the 1st edition Mansions of Madness which was one of the largest games boxes I’ve seen. That out of the way, a really great game, especially for those interested in easing in a group of gamers who are a little less committed to such intense role playing. Very dynamic game outcomes, especially if you include in your materials from the 1st edition. The included app, which acts as the game master and allows everyone to play cooperatively on a team is a total game-changer which makes this one of the most enjoyable and playable games in the genre.
I bought this for my wife at Christmas as we both love playing games together and we enjoy horror / mystery themed games. It was our first adventure into this type of gaming and we absolutely love it. First of all its great because it can be played co op with just two people. Second of all the app is great and really helps with the experience as well as learning the game. It took a few play throughs for us to fully understand all the rules but like I said we were new to this world of gaming and it has great replay-ability. Each play through is different and there are different stories with different levels of difficulty. Highly recommend this game.
I love this game! First of all, I never really knew much about Lovecraft (the writer) or his universe that he created with his genius brain, until I tried this game. It is amazing! Take any mansion-based horror movie, and turn it into a board game, and you have the basic gist of this game. But then, they made it even better!
My favorite part of how they improved this game was the inclusion of the app. Yes, an app! It’s genius! You tell the app which characters are playing, you choose a scenario, and then you hit “GO”! Boom, you are in game, and this app is directing you and taking all the guess work out of the finesse and details, and just letting you enjoy the story and adventure. And boy, is it fun!
We’ve invited many people over, and this is always the game I recommend if people are interested in an adventure. At first, they don’t know what to expect, but then they really start to get into it! Five minutes in, and we are all arguing about what to do next, where to go, who should go, etc. No spoilers, but eventually you get to the point that you are yelling at each other, trying to convince them of the “right” way to survive. And it’s great!
Love this game, love the app, love everything about this! Highly recommend!
Tolles Spiel!
Awesome game, and the app is a nice addition. Only gripe would be the figures. They didn’t feel as high quality as I was hoping initially. Maybe with a little bit of work and paint, they’ll come out a little bit better. Either way, I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys mystery horror games.
Quite simply the best board game I have played. It is the closest board game experience to true role-playing. Bought this to attempt to drag my youngest daughter away from her phone and into family gaming. It worked, the first game we’ve tried that she loves. Now the whole family cannot wait for the next game.
I agree with some other reviews, some of the figures can be difficult to fit in the bases, however the sheer quality of the game experience outweighs this issue.
Easy to learn as the app integrates into the game very well, does most of the work and makes the game flow well. Great job by the game designers.
Got this for son and daughter-in-law for Christmas but played it while they were here. We enjoyed it so much we will be buying us one too. We like the app that handles so much. It made the game more enjoyable and quicker than other games like this we have played. There is some variability to the game, which is nice and it can be played single.
A very nice, high quality game. The app/program which runs the whole show is very well built and designed. Played through one of the scenarios with the family and thye loved it (took it slow as it was their first time seeing the game). Games last a nice length of time, whilst still being capped to a certain length to introduce an element of difficulty. The damage and horror system works well, my family found going insane rather amusing, this adds another element of difficulty to winning the game. Building up the map as you investigate is another nice element, not knowing what will be round the corner or through the next door.
All of the models are fairly well detailed and substantial, maybe a future project will be to go through and paint these. You could use you own models if you really wanted if the given ones werent to your taste.
The price may appear high but the replayability is very good, you can almost always go back and play a scenario again. Whether with other people or with the same group. This is what shows a good game. I very quickly bought one of the expansions as I loved the game so much.
Can’t wait to play it again.
Do not let the price tag deter you from purchasing this game. As with all Fantasy Flight games, the components are very high quality and the rules are (almost universally) clear and concise. The main game comes with a number of scenarios which vary from an hour to 3 hours in length and leans heavily on the works of lovecraft to provide interesting and atmospheric adventures.
The app is something that many feel is an issue but now that many people have ipads/tablets or smart phones it isnt really a problem. Now it only tracks what the game is doing, not the players. This, i imagine, is to stop people playing the game solely on their tablet for free but does mean that some elements have to be run by the players. One person running the game and reading the text boxes and instructions is reccomended. It really does help that the game responds to your decisions, or appears to, and the production quality is very high.
The mechanics are also very strong, with madness and spells being very thematic and fun.
Now for nitpicks and there are some despite the 5 stars. At least one more short adventure, straight out of the box would have been good. Although the longer scenarios are not boring by any means, they can eat away at time and you might end up frustrated at the end of an evening when everyone is tired and the final confrontation is taking too long. The longer scenarios can also take up a lot of table space as well so be forewarned, a six by four foot playing space is advised. The mysteries envisioned in the scenarios are also not really mysteries, you simply acquire objectives and then escape or kill a monster. I understand that one scenario from the second expansion does have a genuine mystery to solve but i have yet to buy it so i cannot say to its quality.
A great game overall.
Great game but doesn’t come with enough scenarios. Setup time is greatly reduced compared to the first version.
The second edition is great. We love the app and the way it guides you through the story. My only complaint is that the figures are a little finnicky on the stands, and the game can feel like a lot of placing things and tapping the app and a bit less of making decisions/interacting with a game.
Either way, it’s a great game for more casual board game nights where people are just looking to have a good time as opposed to diving deep into something that requires more time and attention.
his game is SO MUCH FUN! we’ve played three times so far and every game has been quite different. I love the app and the ambience that it brings (this way we don’t have to go into tabletopaudio to play music/ambience). the figurines are also a great feature. makes it much easier to see the stats of the monsters and just makes it more fun. the puzzles are great, the insanity conditions are even better. love this game!
This is my first ever board game. I ordered it after a friend talked about it and I love it.
Games can be a little long if you have new players, or the max (5) players, and I wish you could make your own settings. But the game is amazing, and has the best board game app (for many devices) on the market.
First off the scenarios included with the base app are all good fun.
I’ve played solo, with two players, four players and five players.
The rules are easy to explain to people and the app handles a lot of the hard work.
My biggest complaint in the base game are the bases the minis come on, they terrible.
You don’t want to glue them down as you need to put reference cards in the base.
I’ve taken to getting some after market ones.
Second, the base game could come with more scenarios, or maybe they could release one for free using the tiles.
Otherwise, the game has good support from fantasy flight.
My biggest concern of you can call it that, is could I still play this game ten years down the line? Will the app still be supported? It’s a brilliant board game eiher way.
Also I have found the more expansions I add to the main box, the monsters need a box all to themselves!
The beginning scenarios are challenging but the slow pace killed some of the excitement at first. It then grew on us and infected us with hunger for more. I should have played the first scenario alone to get a handle of the rules instead of learning as a group.
Great game. The art and figures are well done and give a great game aesthetic. My only complaint is that the figures do not fit or stand up in their bases. The little pegs are too big, too short, or on elements that do not allow much pressure to get the little peg into the hole. So, plan on spending 3- 4 hours gluing them to their bases and prepping before you can actually play the game. It is no fun when the bad guys keep flopping over. The game is well worth checking out. It is a lot of fun and very much like being in an interactive horror movie.
Love the game, improves my MM second edition, box arrived just fine
A great set of tiles, characters and monsters to bulk out the base game. Some of the monsters need some trimming with a craft knife if you intend to paint them but otherwise high quality as always.
We play it a lot. Puzzles can kill interest of certain people because they’re way too difficult, but everybody loves how the app and the board game work in tandem.
Fantastic game with huge amount of replay value due to the app. Cards, tokens and minis are great quality. Will be getting the expansion packs!
Exactly what I wanted, when I wanted it. Can’t ask for more.
Great game but the figure can be better…the base is way to big…and this can be annoying.
Brilliant game, well rounded, fairly simple to pick up and quite addictive!
Fantastic game. Love the atmospheric sound track on the app. My wife and I play 2 player with a number of characters and she loves it.
Slight issues with the larger models not fitting in to the bases but the only issue we’ve had so far. I think this might be a production issue and might have just been our batch because I could’t find mention of it online.
Highly recommend.
This is simply the best game I have ever played. My daughter (10) and I played through the first scenario and we were instantly hooked. We immediately started the second scenario. The combination of board and app enhances the experience and I didn’t hold the game up with endless rule checks, which I usually have to do with new games; this tends to drive the family nuts! The game is so immersive, with opportunities to role play, if you like that sort of thing, or just have fun solving clues and fighting monsters and interviewing suspects. This game has it all. Love the Lovecraft theme so much, I even bought a collection of his stories as I couldn’t get enough. I would highly recommended this game.
This game is great, removes the need for a 6th person to play this game, I’ve played both versions and this one is much quicker in that perspective, I just wish the app had speech for everything in the campaign instead of who’s running the app to read it out loud, the app takes little amount of battery life so it can run a while before your device dies. Now on to the quality of the board pieces and figurines, absolutely top quality, so much detail and the board pieces are large and very thick, tough to move. Overall I would recommend this game to any fan of mansions of madness and newcomers who want to explore the world of H.P. Lovecraft.
Only issue is the figures & bases could fit better for the price.
I purchased today not from amazon in a slidly higher price. Despite that I played the first investigation which is the easiest and I loved it. The game is unpredictible and suprisingly more fun than I expected. Having played other Fantasy Flight games such as the fury on dracula, descent and eldritch horror in my opinion this is the best among them all. The app make it easier for beginners to go through the game by giving instructions for the rules and makes it simpler without wasting a lot of time in the rule book. However I highly advise that you go through the rules first and watch a video on youtube about how to play it. The only problem is that if you dont buy the case to storage what is included you will have to spend more time to for the set up. Overall I am glad that I bought this game and I highly encourage you to buy it. It worth every penny.
If I have convinced you then have fun with it !!!!
Excellent addition to the core game. Product comes with extra tiles, which allow for outside exploration which greatly opens up gameplay and scenarios. Also comes with new monsters and investigators to further expand the mythos and diversity of the game. Would recommend to those who love the Mansions of Madnesd core game.
The required (but free) app allows you and your friends to all work together towards solving the mysteries. I was stunned when I showed it to a separate group of friends and despite playing the same mission the layout and specifics were different the second time. I really wasn’t expecting it.
Better version of Eldritch Horror which is better Version of Arkham horror.
The app makes the game very immersive and the fact there are 9 story missions you can play is very entertaining.
I did not recieve all the mini’s for the characters. Father Mateo was missing and I got two of the same character in his place. I tweeted Fantasy Flight but didn’t get a response.
Absolutely astounding! Best board game ever made, have yet to have people play it that aren’t instantly interested in buying a copy for themselves.
Well! What a great game. Played many hours and love it! The app works really well and takes away all the setup that the first edition needed. Great components too.
My wife and I regularly play this with our gamer friends but have also had just as good a time introducing friends who have only played trivial pursuit. The app removes so much of the boundaries which the first edition imposed and makes playing a much less daunting task. It’s a great 4 player co-op game and has lead to some fantastic stories for example a priest, gravedigger, receptionist and parapsychologist fighting their way out of a mansion filling with unspeakable horrors from beyond, the receptionist taking down several with a knife and the gravedigger going hand to hand with a flying snake monster or two.
It’s very re-playable due to random nature of items, locations and enemies, don’t think I’ve ever played exactly the same game twice. Yes it’s a bit pricey especially with expansions but for pure cost versus enjoyment it’s worth every penny. You don’t need to know anything about the Lovecraft books to enjoy the game but for fans there are some characters, monsters and locations that you’ll recognize.
The 1st Edition of Mansions of Madness was a favorite in our house even though it had problems with fiddliness and (in my opinion) an overpowered Keeper. This 2nd Edition preserves everything that was good about the first while introducing more options than ever before through the use of the app.
I can’t express how much more fun I have revealing the house and seeing the mysteries pop up. The missions themselves are well written and interesting, with enough variance that you can play them again and again.
I’d highly recommend this for any fan of cooperative board games.
Excellent game!
First, the downsides: it’s rather expensive, the miniature quality is not great, and while replayability isn’t terrible, it also isn’t good.
The upsides: it’s one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played. The scenarios are well-written and engrossing. The app does an excellent job of keeping track of most of the moving pieces in the game, making this far easier to play and teach than Eldritch Horror or Arkham Horror. Setup is easy. And there are more scenarios coming out frequently — there are currently 7, with 2 more coming out early 2017.
It’s pricey, lets get that out there first.
I’ve the previous edition along with the wilds expansion which I was happy to see can be included with this game. That takes some of the hurt out of the upgrade.
Getting the a game up and running is a significantly quicker experience compare to the first edition, that’s a huge plus in my book. Worth the upgrade if you’re a fan of the game.
SO much fun!! My husband and I just played, and compared to Eldritch Horror or Arkham Horror, it is a breeze to set up. We used our tablet to use the app for game play, and it was amazing…it felt very immersive. Highly recommend!
This game is heavy, but for good reason; everything included is high quality (excluding the models which are average; but they portray the characters well and can be repainted if you wish). The play style is engaging and there are tense moments where you discuss as a team your plan.
We have played twice (first with 4, then with 5 people) on the easier campaigns and both times have been great fun. It is possible if you happen upon the same room to have an idea of what happens where, however to keep with the spirit of the game do not cross off certain areas based on a previous playthrough. Looking forward to upping the difficulty next time!
This is great game that I have already played about 6 times, all with people who can dig the setting of the game as well as the fact that all the hard work is done on the app itself, which is not hard at all. I do find that it is questionable how well this game can last considering that as of right now, there are 6 scenarios (2 with the expansions, which I also had with the previous 1st edition of the game). But as of right now, on the merits of the enjoyment and perceived tension that playing the scenarios for the first time gives you (which is great for a horror game), I whole heartedly recommend this.
Love the ability to play cooperatively. It is a game that my family can play even on-line. Stories are well developed with just the right tension and urgency of the original game. I am looking forward to more scenarios.
Having owned and loved the first edition of this game, I was very wary of forking out for the second edition. Having played XCOM: the board game I knew that FFG’s apps were good quality and well thought through and when I read that all of my first edition stuff could be used I decided to give it a try.
It was the right choice!
The basics: It’s the 1920’s. Up to five players take on the roles of investigators looking into the dark mysteries of the Cthulhu Mythos, an horrific world of terrifying creatures and mad cultists, all seeking to bring the earth under the sway of the Great Old Ones.
In the first edition game the situations ad creatures of the Mythos were run by one of the players taking on the role of The Keeper, whilst the other players took on the invesgator roles. In Second edition the Keeper role is played by a free app and the game is much better for it. All of the games set up, creatures, events and encounters are smoothly handled by the app streamlining gameplay immeasurably, also allowing the game to be a completely cooperative experience. The app also plays atmospheric music throughout the game. Oh, in my opinion it’s best played on an iPad or tablet for best effect and viewing.
The rules of the game are fairly straightforward and can be easily picked up even by new players. The first story, The Cycle of Eternity, has some tutorial elements to it and there is a ‘Learn to play’ guide and a rules reference book to help you along too.
The game is divided into two phases: the investigator phase, during which the players take their actions, and the Mythos phase were strange events happen and creatures spawn. During the game the app guides you through initial setup including what rooms/areas to use, any items of interest, where the doors/paths to the next areas are etc. Interacting with these things is easy. Want to search that desk covered in piles of letters? Tap it’s icon on the screen and follow the instructions. Open that door at the end of the dark and creepy hallway? Tap the exploration icon. Attack that horrifying cultist? Tap the monster icon and follow the simple instructions.
Any time the investigators attempt something they are usually required to pass a test which simply involves rolling dice and seeing if you roll enough successes to pass (or at least mitigate the worst of the effects). Other times they are required to solve puzzles. Generated by the app you may have to open a lock, find the code or assemble evidence to help you on your way.
As the game progresses the investigators, all with their own backstories and unique abilities, will find their sanity eroded and their bodies assailed as they seek to complete the tasks that they have been set. Those tasks vary depending on what story was selected at the beginning of the game. The stories vary in difficulty and game length and, most importantly for me, each can be slightly different each time you play. The door you opened into a bedroom last time may be a study or kitchen in the next game.
If you are an owner of the original game, the app also allows you to include your room tiles and creatures by simply adding them to your collection in the app and, since the addition of two expansions, gives you two more stories into the bargain!
Ok, Mansions IS expensive, I’ve got lots of games and this is one of the most expensive ones I have but the components and the gameplay, in my opinion, are well worth it. Couple that with the sense that you and your players are actually in a Mythos story, struggling to save the world, it’s a clear winner!
Amazing game for one to 5 players. If you like detective, storytelling and Cthulhu mythos- this is for you. Well printed parts of board and well made plastic miniatures give a good looking item with hours of fun. You will need free game master app installed for this game, ios, android mac or pc, that is a difference from 1st edition, where game master was one player.
You can transfer everything from first edition to this one, so don’t give away your old game!
Expensive, but what a great game. The app (required) works well, randomising elements of the 4 different scenarios keeping each game as “fresh” as it can considering the underlining story/plot will be similar.
Tips for playing, one person really needs to be in charge of the app, which ideally you should run on a tablet (thou’ it’s available on Steam if you have a laptop). It just keeps it simpler that way. The only real time to pass the tablet to other players is when they are attempting puzzles. The game can go on a bit so make sure you have a power supply for your tablet. Upon saying that when we played it the whole group loved the game, and wanted to play again straight away (we didn’t but would of been happy to). Oh another tip, blue tooth to speakers, because the app has some nice atmospheric music and sound effects, really adds to the game.
The only let down for this version are the models, the quality seems average at best. The wings of one of my bigger models was detached, I’ve re stuck it back on. They also don’t stay on their bases well, again, once I’ve painted them I’ll be sticking them to the bases. Taken the premium price of the game (and already various expansions) it is disappointing they are average.
I didn’t knock a star off for it, I suppose I should have, but the gameplay itself was solid and lots of fun. I playing in a group that enjoys games like Betrayal on the house on the hill and room 25. It’s a good fit, and the app runs the game wonderfully.
One play so far and 5 stars so far…
The app runs really well and has fixed all that was wrong with the original, played it into the night and had spectators join us helping in the puzzles and laughing along to the misfortunes of our characters… Very involving for all. Again 5 stars.
This game was amazing. I was a huge fan of the first edition even with it’s flaws of long set up and risk of failure for setting up the scenario. Second editions usage of the app is amazing and has really pulled me in to the game. Only downside I had was with the lower number of scenarios present in this vs the first editio
While I WAS a little annoyed that Second Edition came out just a short couple months AFTER I had dropped $300+ on ebay to fill out a complete First Edition set, I was more than a little intrigued by the game and its companion ap. Very impressed with the game play and the effects added by the ap. While First Edition seems a bit overwhelming with the set up and the need for one player against the rest, I like that the ap gets everyone into the game, and even allows solo play. Have only played one of the scenarios so far, but am looking forward to getting into the others soon.
This is my favorite boardgame. I got into the hobby playing cooperatively with Pandemic, and then moved into the narrative fun of Betrayal at House on the Hill. This game is a Lovecraftian super-charged version of Betrayal, with killer app implementation that makes for the lightest “heavy” game I own. The miniatures are pretty lame, but they don’t get in the way of the amazing gameplay and storytelling. Win or lose, you are guaranteed a gripping, multi-hour extravaganza. The best of the best.
It’s expensive – much more expensive than I think it should be. But I own a broad swath of the earlier non-computer-assisted ‘1st Edition’ MoM, and I like the bones of this game a lot. To give it credit, the new ‘Keeperless’ computer-assist, does improve the game quite a bit.
And this version’s utility is enhanced considerably for folks that own the earlier first-edition and it’s expansions, as the downloadable free app can integrate the prior components seamlessly into the current game.
I’d give it a 5-star rating, but to my mind, a game with a hundred dollar MSRP is probably reaching out a bit too far, and would have been somewhat better served by splitting up some of the more expensive components into muitiple add-on boxes. So I’m deducting a star for cost.
Received this game this week,..the components were in tact and fantastic looking miniatures. The App was easy to find. I chose to download off google play to my phone and off Steam for my Laptop, …thus far I prefere the laptop version as the smart phone version off google play is glitchy,… it seems the steam version has been updated more frequently than the phone app has. For this reason I felt it was shy of a perfect score,.. as I still have yet to play a full game…I cannot attest to a full experience but the app has music and an ominous narrator for the scenerio being played which really sets the mood. If you are a huge fan Arkham or lovecraft this is a must,…with a conversion kit for the 1st editon and its expansions or 2 expansion packs that will be released in fall if you want to collect all those 1st edition packs easily it sits as a pretty definitive package.
I’ve been a huge mansions fan since the very first iteration. I’ve purchased every expansion and mini-expansion. We played 2nd edition with two people, and it was a fantastic time. There were more changes than I expected, but all for a new refreshing experience of Mansions. You do not need the first edition expansions to play this game, but they definitely add variation.
An excellent update to this great game.
The companion app adds so much that could not be done in the original game. The map building as you go means you don’t know what lurks around the corner which really creates a sense of exploration as well as removing the overly long and tedious setup from the first edition.
To counter the below.
Game is made of some pretty hefty contents and also includes a companion app. Plenty of games this level come in at this price bracket. Also wait for full release of the game before adding a review.
