Fluke products are good quality from my experience. Works very reliably.
As an electrician this thing is great. Armoured cable is tricky if it’s not at a junction but loomex is a breeze
Works well, remember to clip the cables on the little metal pins on the gator clips or it won’t send a crisp signal.
This is my second pro 3000. The last one lasted 5 years through all kinds of abuse. These are well worth the money.
L’avevo gi usato qualche anno fa molto semplice da utilizzare e pu essere di grande aiuto per la localizzazione dei cavi
I’ve only been using this for a month, but so far so good. I am an electrician by trade and works very well.
I had a problem rewiring our telephones after dumping Verizon for RCN. (Good riddance.). I could not have solved it without this tool. Excellent.
Found all cables even hidden cables that were cut off in the wall. Great tool. So glad I didn’t get one with less power.
had to review this one. I am an electrician. also used to be telecommunications tech. love the performance. strong signal , clear and loud.happy
This is not even in the same league as the $30 toner I was using previously. This thing is awesome. It easily tones through drywall or several feet of thin air. You can hold the toner out like a witching stick as you crawl around a crawlspace and it will get louder as you move in the right direction. My previous experience with toners has been meh but this thing amazes me.
Edit: This toner continues to work perfectly 100% of the time. Cannot recommend highly enough. It is very powerful but also sensitive enough that you can pick exactly the right set of terminals out on a 66 block. Very impressive. Zero complaints.
If you can’t find your cable with this, it is not the fluke’s fault.
I love this tool. I traced wires under subfloor and in attic, from inside the house.
Practise on a extension chord first, so you know how it behaves. The wand have a spare sensor inside where the battery is. Noone stated that in reviews before, do o just wanted to say that.
If you have break in the line, this tool can also find where. I used it on power cables. Hook it only to black wire, as the white is all over the house connected and the wand will pick up everything. Based on the 60hz humm you will be able to tell if the wire you are next to is powered or not. Trace only wires with no power in it. If you touch the sensor directle on a wire on the other side, the tone is super strong, so if you have multiple wires in the box , you know which one is the right one.
After having our basement finished I discovered that an outlet on the floor above was dead. I spent a couple of afternoons searching for the cut cable with an inspection scope through the can light openings in the basement ceiling and soffits. (The contractor had suggested cutting into the new sheetrock, which I really didn’t want to do). But because of all the HVAC lines I really couldn’t see much.
With the Fluke toner I was able to find the problem in 15 minutes. The changing tones are clear and the signal is strong from a foot away through drywall. It’s worth every penny!
Works good as a simple toner. Comes with a handy carrying pouch. Uses 9V batteries.
The tail of connectors from the transmitter doesn’t appear to be removable … I don’t use the clips much so they’re kind of in the way. Tricky to get it back into the carrying pouch.
For me this is the best Make of this type of devices…. An excellent tool
Excelente probador, funciona muy bien y original de Fluke, sin problema alguno, detecta fcilmente los cables en donde otros detectores no funcionaban. Entrega super rpida. Muchas gracias!!
Ricevuto ben imballato e protetto.
Worked good. Strong signal that could be followed a hundred feet. Just what I would expect from Fluke!
Excellent product , using it daily and it is superior to other brands that I have owned!
Ho acquistato il prodotto per lavoro. Nulla da eccepire, opera in maniera impeccabile. La sirena cos forte che quando sono negli armadi stradali si affaccia la gente per capire cosa stia succedendo. Prodotto consigliato.
Excellent value and features for the technician or IT work. Just put one end of the device in an RJ45 or RJ11 in the wall, move the other end to the problem location and you tone out the problem. The volume is high and audible and works well in noisy areas.
Fluke is the only name for electrical testing equipment to me. If you need to trace out some wires (unpowered), then this is the tool for you.
havent used it yet, but nice quality item, trusted name brand.
My first job for this toner was to trace back an open electrical outlet that was not getting power. Using the Fluke toner I found the problem within 5 minutes and saved myself the cost of an electrician. The tone is triggered even if you’re not on top of the outlet and because of that, even though the outlet was hidden behind some stuff on a shelf, I still heard the tone, softly, starting to sound. I uncovered the outlet, discovered it was actually a GFI that had tripped, and fixed the problem in 5 seconds.
Next I tackled some Ethernet wiring that was unlabeled. The probe unit comes with an Ethernet adapter which made this job simple. I plugged the toner into the outlet in my office, then went behind the entertainment center to find out which Ethernet port it was wired to. The Pro3000 worked flawlessly and I completed the job tracing the remaining Ethernet outlets and was done in 30 minutes.
Another thing I liked was that the user manual is available from Fluke as a PDF. Whenever I buy anything with a manual, I try and find it on the manufacturer’s site as a PDF and then save it to my computer. It’s much easier to reference it in the future from my computer than it is trying to figure out what I did with the original paper manual. Good on you Fluke that you make this documentation available as a PDF.
I’m not sure when I’ll need it again, but these two jobs alone saved me a bundle. I know from experience that Fluke makes top-of-the-line testing equipment, so I made the decision to invest a few more bucks and get a known-good brand. I’m very glad I did as the results speak for themselves.
I have only one gripe: the packaging is next to impossible to get open. I finally had to use a 10″ serrated bread knife to cut open the package. Surely this could be improved on!
If you are in the business of phone or computers, sooner or later you will need this tone. The price is reasonable and you cannot live without one in the networking field. Make sure you have an extra set of batteries handy, and there might be long periods between use.
This is a quality product and it performs well tracing wires in a 5th wheel and in a house. Purchased this product primarily to locate a open in a power line in my 5th wheel and this tool helped me locate it in less than 5 minutes.
Have previous experience with other Fluke products so took a chance with this much cheaper Fluke and have been very satisfied with its operation and quality.
One of my most valuable tools. Makes it very easy to locate wire leads and which ones match the ends from room to room. Thanks Amazon for the value.
This is the best toner and tracker that I have ever used.
I can’t live without mine. The change of tone when a short has been detected really is a feature I couldn’t live without and I’ve not seen on other brands. The new version has rubber gloves for the crocodile clips whitch is handy to stop them shorting out on each other when left dangling from a cable. The LED also goes yellow when the battery is low.
The original version was the best but the new improved version has really evolved the product to untouchable.
For those installing speakers it carries enough voltage to stimulate sound from any speakers connected to the cable being belled out. Usfull when trying to reconcile speakers to cables.
I have tried many other non-fluke versions but none come close. Built to last whilst others fall apart or become temprimental.
I have also tried the more expensive yellow version that includes net work cable tester but found it complicated and the extra features confusing. Ignoring the cable testing function this blue one is the go to unit. If this had a network cable testing function it would be perfection.
Tester der durch mich bisher noch nicht zur Gnze bedient werden kann. Die Grundfunktionen haben mir schon viel weiter geholfen. Fr das was er kann finde ich den Tester sehr preiswert.
I’ve been using this for about 5 years now and it has saved me a ton of time. I’ve used it in the rain and I have actually left the probe in the rain for hours and it has worked the same way the day I bought it. I have used this product to tone a 5km line and it worked flawlessly and I could I hear the tone loud and clear.
Ask any electician, this is a good brand.
I’ve had mine for a while and I can pick a wire of of a mess while tracing it 300′ through the ceiling.
It’s what this is for.
Works good. But when using on cat 6 could not hear the toner through the sheathing had to she cable to get toner to tone even on full volume. Haven’t used it on Romex but will update when I do.
Electrical contracto
Used to trace an underground fence line that borders my 3.5 acres. Red clip to one side of the fence wire at control box, black clip to ground at control box. Worked like a charm. Some of the wire was deep so I had to expose it to get tone. Started where I knew the wire was located at each end then the middle and was able to narrow down to the exact spot.
I used the tone generator to trace Ethernet lines to the basement of a 3 story house. I can only image how long it would have taken me to follow each individual wire. One of my favorite features is the ability to verify your on the right wire. all you have to do is take 2 wires that are connected to the toner and touch them together and the sound changes. I suggest having a set of two way radios and a helper. As awesome as this product is you still have to move the toner from room to room and depending on how big the job is that’s a lot of running up and down the stairs.
A must have for any IT Professional. I bought this device to replace a cheap Chinese model I got for 20 bucks and MAN, this Tone Generator blows the Chinese model away! The tone generated is very strong and can easily be detected inside walls, and can be detected even while surrounded by electromagnetic interference. I love it, and would strongly recommend it to anyone.
Nice tool, used to verify a circuit from a non-functioning light back to the circuit breaker. Discovered the breakers were mis-labeled. I have other applications for this tool, but it certainly was useful for identifying the current problem quickly.
Great tone generator for identifying and troubleshooting phone and data lines. Constructed well and works great. Fluke makes high-quality electrical and signal test equipment. If you’re going to need a good toner on a regular basis, it doesn’t make sense to purchase an inferior tool. This one will stand up to rigorous, daily use.
very good one, tracing the line so good,I am an electrician and this one works
very nice.
I have used it since last two month, worked great, very sensitivegood tools
little tip, reading the manual first then operate it,problem solved.
Received exactly what I expected in the promised delivery time-frame.
This toner is great. Durable and light-weight. All functions work properly and as advertised. Forst use was on a 100′ run of a 25 bundle of cat5. Very clear and loud signal. No issues at all. I’ve bought more expensive toners in the past that had half the functionality so I consider this tool at this price a great deal.
We use this as part of our customer omboarding toolkit. It does as advertised and hasn’t failed us yet. Sorry for the short review but the seller does a great job at describing the product I find it silly doing it again. This is one of the line locators and worth the spend
Works great as an IT tool, only downside is the 9V batteries required. Would be better if it had an internal battery with USB charging.
Works great!
Alligator clips doesn’t hold small wires that well , so you have to be creative when connecting so that they don’t touch each other. Should have a connected for smaller intricate wires
Using for buried boxes under the drywall and tracing the circuit. Normally can point the wire +- 1 inch range. Not enough to find Cat 5e or coax cables.
We’ve used the Fluke Pro3000 in the telecommunications industry for years and this is a go-to staple in our kit. Solid, reliable, robust and accurate mean we can count on it every time. Two thumbs up for this tool, and two thumbs up for Amazon’s amazing shipping and service.
Works well, as expected. I have owned a few of these over the years (misplacing or giving to other techs, not breaking) and have always been happy with them. Professional level product.
All I wanted and more. I would have like a video on using it.
Best tool I ever bought. It will trace electrical wires, phone line wires and tell you which wire matches each end in
a big cluster. I have let several auto mechanics I know use it and they all bought one for their shop. Buy it, you’ll
love it and have more fun with it and find more uses for it, than any tool you own.
Pros:
– Works as advertised
– Was able to track Cat5 in the walls
– SmartTone is helpful for tracking down pairs
Cons:
– Would have been nice to have a RJ45 adapte
Works great, almost everyone I know (work related) uses the fluke compared to other brands. I haven’t used to many other brands to compare with but I’ve always been happy with my fluke.
Hochwertiger Leitungssucher mit 100% finden der Leitung. Hatte schon viele in gebrauch aber dieser ist rund um perfekt.
Lieferund schnell und Problemlos
I use this commercially to tone out rg6 coax. It works great and is loud. It is strong enough to tone out thru your body so you can pin point an exact line by touching it with your finger. It will tone silver satin or CATV/twisted pair thru drywall. If rg6 has good fittings and the wire is not damaged, you will not hear it thru the shielding, you will have to disconnect the fitting to hear it. 5 stars, would buy again.
Lifesaver on poorly labeled ethernet runs. Sensitivity on the probe can be hit or miss on a PoE network, but this is far better than nothing.
I’ve been through a lot of toners this is by far my favorite. The main reason behind getting this one was the awesome alligator it’s that it come with. These allow you to tone wire without stripping and feel extremely solid. Another thing is that you can put this on alternating tone and once you short the ends together it changes the sound of the tone which is perfect for making sure you have the right wire. Also come with an extra tip just in case you break the original.
This toner works so much better then the one that was included with my network tester.
Used this to very easily find speaker wire stapled in ceiling between 1st and 2nd story.
For thinner wire (like cat5) you get good tone at the end and usable tone on the outside of the jacket, but don’t expect to find a Ethernet wire through drywall.
EASY TO USE. This thing solves the problem of tracking down the jillion wires that live in our attic. Maybe not a jillion but huge bundles of blue cables, coax, etc. going everywhere. When something quits this may be where to start. The phone co. tech didn’t have any luck using his, and to top it off he went off and left it. Well…. the battery was dead, no wonder. He didn’t come back to get it so I have two chirpers.
well made, this is the third tone generator I’ve owned, very well made with nice improvements to the grip and buttons. No more annoying toggles that could switch on while in the pouch and kill the battery
Very happy with this tone generator. I bought it to find some speaker wires buried behind the drywall in our basement family room. Instead of guessing where the wires were between the studs and possibly patching up after making unnecessary holes, this allowed me to use the probe to find exactly where the wires ended across the room from the receiver location. Very easy. The tone was loud and clear, and I was confident I had the right location to cut holes for the in wall speakers.
One of the most reliable Tech equipment you can buy. I have been using Fluke products all my life. never a problem. Had my Fluke for 20 years and lost it…so this is the new one… hopefully for another 20
I had two non working electrical outlets in my house and could not figure out how to trace them back to the source. No one at the big box store could give me any ideas. Connected this to the outlet and starting to follow the wire up the wall and continued to follow the sound. Finally found the junction box where there was an open. Keep in mind this was NOT an energized circuit.
Very handy tool to figure out where random wires terminate. We recently moved into a house built many years ago. There were all sorts of wires lacking any sort of label. This tone generator helped identify the wires.
Works great for the use I intended it for. I converted the existing CAT-5e cable runs in my new house the original builder used for phones and put them over to network drops. I had a bundle of CAT-5e in the basement that wasn’t labeled so I had to tone out all the drops in order to put them into a punch down patch panel. I used to have another fox and hound, but couldn’t find it so I got this one. I’d definitely buy it again!
Sometime tone generator doesn’t transmit loud tone. For testing a cable with jack on it, you will need an additional adapter to bridge both ends( Tone generator n Cable’s)
Product arrived on time and as described. The only improvment I would make to this would be an adjustable gain on the tone generator. When toning wires that are exposed at the end of a multi-pair cable the signal can jump across wires as it is quite a strong tone. Best toner I have used.
A good ground is very important for in wall wiring that you don’t really know where to find it (i.e. not sure which wall has the wire or not sure where in the wall the look). The ground is not necessary for other application (i.e. finding the wire in a bundle).
This thing saves you so much time for tracing wires in bundles. Works well on CAT5 cables although you have to cut open a cable to be able to plug it into a wall jack and clamp these red and black clippers onto the wire to send the signal.
Works well..not strong enough to send a signal done a line that is connected though. ie: one side of the wire-to-be-tested is connected to a router and the other side is connected to the pulse generator. The receiver wand cannot pick up the signal of the pulse generator because it gets drowned out by the noise on the wire.
Has worked great tracking cat5e/Cat5 jacks back to central panel across multiple floors in 10,000 sq ft building. I had initially tried the $35 orange toner that didn’t work at all. So happy to have found a toner/tracer that works.
It will not find a hidden wire in the wall, but will accurately find wires where both ends of the wire are exposed.
Running LAN cables another short haul modems on older equipment at work. Job was easy when some of the punch downs were not.
I had to trace a number of curcuits behind drywall in a home renovation project, this tool made it possible.
The tone is strong enough to easily find wires behind drywall, but this is also the source of my one and only complaint: If you have a box with several electrical lines going into it, even if you separate all the lines inside the box and at their “far” ends so that there is zeero continuity between separate lines, the signal still tends to “splash” onto all the other lines. In a box with three lines I got signal on all three even though the tone generator was only attached to one. This is more pronounced where the lines are closest together (at the box, of course). This led to some confusion when I was in a small closet and no matter where I put the probe I got signal! Imagine my surprise to see that the line I was tracing lead not only UP from the box to the ceiling, but DOWN to the floor as well…. and off to the side too! Whoops! That ain’t right! However with a little patience and understanding of what was happening I was able to eventually sort out the individual runs. Further from the box the signal drops off on the non-connected lines faster than on the connected line. So I had to take a few educated guesses as to where the line I was tracing might be, and then move far away from the box and look for it. With a few tries I found each line and traced them to their ends. Bottom line: this thing works, and it works thorugh drywall, but it still requires you to use some brains.
Check out the videos on You Tube that show how to best use these tools. On 100% open lines you connect the tone generator to TWO conductors and trace the line. When you think you have found the far end you short the two conductors together there and the tone changes. If the tone doesn’t change you have the wrong pair. Because of the signal splash-over this is important to know. This is essential in tracing lines in bundles as the splash factor would otherwise drive you crazy.
I found the quality of the the tool to be very good. Not flimsy at all. I expect years of service given normal care in handling. The tone generator has a nice lanyard to hang it by when you are attaching it to various wall boxes etc, so that you don’t wind up hanging it by its leads, a nice touch that should add to longevity. I like that it comes with a case to keep everything together since this is the sort of tool I will only use occasionally and if it is knocking about in my kit without a case I’d be sure to misplace one part or another.
This is my second toner. Tried the digital Intellitone but just didn’t work as well as this one. I use this to find individual wires in aircraft harnesses……….thousands of wires and this one is the best unit i have ever used. Maybe the Intellitone is designed for network or telephone troubleshooting but just doesn’t work for my application.
I was a telecom guy for many years. This combo is awesome. I needed it to ring out some electrical wiring in my new house and connect some CAT5. Great design and a great product that I would highly recommend
You may need headphones to find outside cables broken in your PetSmart electronic fences. This saved a lot of work in finding where lightening damaged the insulation in my original electonic buried cable pet fence. It is good to find cables hidden in floors and walls for bell wiring and old telephone cables. Pays for itself after the first trouble shooting chore. Note: an auto mechanic uses his to find breaks in wiring harnesses and saves big time. This kit is one of the best and has the quality name behind it.
Found wires I needed to find, one in a place I did not expect.
Awsome only one other brand compares. This especially good one to have if you also have the fluke head set for testing phone lines or if your working in teams you can use it to power 2 wire and use the head set for comms.
I needed to trace some wires while installing direct TV and phone service through my house. The probe did the trick. It save me hunting through the walls and attic. It was worth the price simply not having to go through the attic tracing wires! The Direct TV guy did not find the proper connects with his tracer…. ah … but I was able with a little thinking and my unit I solved the problem in about an hour. Thank you….
I used this to trace a NM electrical wire in the wall. I turned off the breaker, connected the tone generator to an outlet (positive to hot and negative to neutral). It worked like a charm! I was able to easily trace the wire throughout the house.
It does feel a little cheap, but for <$100 I can't expect much more. One design improvement I would suggest is to make the power button on the tone generator less sensitive. Sometimes, it seems to accidentally turn on when I put it in the carry pouch. This could drain the battery if not detected.
As usual fluke has proven cost effective and dependable. These gator clips work perfectly on a 66 block, and it also contains a pod of pins for tapping a wire through the insulation. Sound is great, and works through almost any material. Although there are better ones on the market, fluke has kept to the basics. By doing away with all the extras that most people do not use the costs are now low enough that I can actually be happy to purchase the device that functions at near the level of the high end ones.
works well I use it on phone/cat5/coax and does the job a lot better then the jr fox and hound I had been using. same price when compared to a lesser product bought locally at specialty stores. .
Great the build quality is good, contrary to what some one wrote, China rocks as per usual their electronics is good. I am wrapped, we have to pay an arm and a leg for the same model, same product here in Oz, and I got it way cheaper, and basically love Fluke. Wish we could get all Fluke products from amazon, but agilent dmm are good too. This probe is good and so is the triplet fox an hound jr, which also has a light or led notifier. Go for it!
The Fluke worked very will as all Flukes do. Just hooked the toner to the dead hot and neutral and traced the wiring from outlet to outlet until I found the GFI that was tripped in the garage behind a bunch of boxes. Great tool
The Fluke Networks PRO3000 Tone and Probe Kit includes a tone generator and probe to identify individual phone or cat wiring even through the walls. The kit was shipped and arrived when stated and works well. Will be using it to identify the outlets in a business to the telephone closet. Has a handy pouch to store and carry the probe kit.
I use it to trace, and repair, cctv, cat5, phone, and power lines in one of the last true amusement park’s in the country. So far it has saved me a hundred plus hours in running new line’s v.s. my other unit that only sends a singnal about fifty feet.
I bought this to trace all kinds of cables. ethernet cables, telephone cables, electrical cables etc. this tracer works in a lot of ways, you can connect it to single conductors with clips or use it in a more traditional sense like the rj11 connector.
ive used this tool in a lot of situations and it worked and solved the problems for me in all situations. the signal detection in the probe is quite strong, sometimes you need to pull the cables appart from a bunch to narrow the selection down, but you will be happy with this inexpensive tool. battery last a long time.
I expected a bit more than was realized, having nothing but great experiences with Fluke equipment. I bought it to trace network cables and had no luck sorting out which was the target cable until I got to the termination. Even then the signal was faint. I suppose when I get more experience with it, I’ll become more confident with it’s behavior. Until then, I’ll run other side-by side tests to verify my results
I have used other toners and probe kits and this, by far, is the best and the most durable I’ve used. I currently have been installing home theater, structured wiring and automation systems for about 10 years. In the tools I use I like to have something dependable and reliable.
I have “chased” wires in the wall as deep as 10″ with no issues. This is important to me because there are times where we will prewire in a ceiling and after the drywall is up we really can’t make a mistake. The toner works great with CAT5/e/6, multi conductor and RG6 quad. The only negative I would have to say is that the volume on the probe feels a little cheap, but it hasn’t fallen apart in the months I’ve used it so its a minor point for me now.
As for the durability, I’ve had both units fall from a 10′ height onto concrete, bouncing around in a tool truck and on a daily basis squished into my already full tool bag. I don’t abuse my tools, but they are well used almost on a daily basis. This is my 2nd most used tool in my bag with my first being my Channel Lock crimper/cutters. It’s probably the most borrowed tool by the other installers I have since I’ve purchased it.
What a great tool.
I was having problem with a wiring circuit in my home. I lost power to a 15A 110V dedicated circuit when using my air compressor. I headed down to the breaker box – but no breakers were tripped. I was puzzled. House is new and everything was installed by a pro electrician. Figured there might be a GFI somewhere between outlet and the breaker box.
After verifying with a volt meter the circuit was indeed dead I removed the outlet and attached the toner to the bear ground wire and the black ‘hot’ wire. Pressed the button no the wand and it sounded very clearly – even through drywall. I traced the circuit back pretty far and then decided to jump to the breaker box. Within 5 seconds of being at the panel I found the wire heading to the dead outlet by using the wand. Whoola – isolated a bad breaker which is simple enough to replace.
I know people primarily use these tools for DC voltage, RF, etc. However, a conductor is a conductor and as long as you verify the power is off it works great on 110V/220V capable conductors too.
The tool exceeded my expectations as far as quality and signal power. Why didn’t I own this thing years ago?! My brother in law was equally impressed.
Great job Fluke.
When the wife and I decided to put a second air conditioner on our rv it was pre-wired and the thermostat wire was in the wall according to the sticker but little did we know that wasn’t were the thermostat wire was at. Fact is I put a hole were the sticker was and no wiring at all so instead of putting holes all over our bedroom I bought this and it showed my right were it was at and I couldn’t be happier. Now I have a tool that will work for tracing other wires in other places and who nows what I will find. Great product just wish I would have listened to my gut and bought it sooner.
With regard to trying to trace wires inside a wall, This tool works well. However, the problem with this type of tool is that you can’t distinguish wires that run in parallel with the wire you’re trying to find (and then later split off to a different path) from the actual wire you’re trying to find. This is not really a fault of the tool, but just physics. I gave it only 4 stars because of the cheap volume knob construction.
Bought this to trace out speaker wires underneath drywall in my house, worked so great I felt compelled to share my experience with others.
When tracing the wires I connected the black wire to the house ground and the red wire to the wire I was tracing. Worked much better than my old Triplett Fox / Hound (I lost the Fox so had to purchase something new..)
Was unsure of how this would perform after reading the reviews, but now I am 100% certain this is a great product!
The Fluke 3000 is a good instrument and works well for tracing house wiring. I used it to trace new wiring that had not been identified before sheet rock was installed. Easy to use and provides a clear confirmation tone when you find the right wire. I would recommend this instrument to any one with some basic household wiring skills. Does not work on energized circuits!
his toner seemed very well constructed, which is a definite plus on a large construction site.the alligator clamps are very sturdy and grab the wires very tightly.the first time i used it i toned out a few #6 awg circuits that were approximately 1500′ long, and had a few wiring method changes (conduit to cable tray, with a few splices). the wires terminated on terminal strips in a j-box and were close together.the toner performed excellent, if i was getting crossover tones i just lowered the volume. i easily identified my circuits. well worth the extra money when compared to cheaper toners.
On some other toners I’ve owned and used it is very difficult to be sure you’ve identified the exact pair you want. With this tone generator you simply short the pair by touching the wires together or using a screwdriver (or the tone probe tip) to short the 66 block and it changes the tone to a different pattern which is pretty easy to notice. This feature along with the really good battery life has left me impressed. The bed of nails on the tone generator leads is handy as well for identifying unterminated pairs, and the RJ11 plug works well in both RJ11 and RJ45 jacks, and it has enough power to identify even through twisted pair cable without having to use alternating pairs.
The tester works as advertised and comes in an functional case for storage. The picture here only shows the sniffer, the emitter unit is a little square with various leads hanging from it. Both the sniffer and the emitter require a 9V block battery (not included, and a bit of a disappointment at this price point). On the other hand, the emitter features very robust adjustable clamps for bare wire as well as a telephone connector to make wire tracing of a telephone line easier.
This tool has paid for itself in a short time, allowing me to trace wires of several different types (CAT3, CAT5, coax, speaker) that were run through walls in the house I just purchased. Most of the wires were not labeled, so my first job was to identify were they were all running. The PRO3000 was just the tool I needed to get this job done quickly and accurately.
This product will make my life much easier. I built a large house in Tahoe several years back, and there are many (about 30) CAT 5 / Coax home runs throughout the house that terminate at patch panels in the basement. Trouble is that some were poorly labeled (some have question marks), and some don’t work. This tool is very sensitive (gives a tone when you are near the correct wire), and lets me diagnose / fix the problems without the frustration. No doubt, Fluke builds good stuff, and this device is fairly priced. Also bought the Fluke A/C probe that’s very nice for about $25.
If you looking for an inexpensive tool to find a wire behind a wall this is the tool. By sending a tone through the wire it is possible to trace the wire through walls without opening the wall. Of course it is also great for finding wires within bundles. I purchased this to replace another probe that could not detect wires within the walls. The only reason I did not give this a 5 was that at the highest volumes I found the internal speaker to be noisy. It would be nice if there was a noise damping circuit on it so when no tone is detected it is quite.
I’ve used several network cabling sniffers over the years. The Fluke unit is by far more sensetive and capable than others I’ve used. It is fast and easy to use. Uses standard batteries – no need to look for special hearing aid type batteries, simple 9 Volt batteries. having used others in the past, this one struck me with its sensitivity, able to locate wires in wall cavities, seperate leads from with in pairs easily.
