It is good value my only gripe is the controller its very outdated like 1980s and for 200+ Hornby could do better but the rest of the set is excelle

I didn’t know what to expect from a British line of model trains.what a difference from American brands.the locomotive run very quiet and smooth and passenger cars are finely detailed and the price for the set was very reasonable .very impressive.did my research on British model trains after and found their other Train lines and rolling stock outdo the American train companies,quality and price-wise.the only qualm I had was the locomotive was lacking a headlight,but no big deal,still a stunning locomotive,very detailed.would recommend purchasing the flying scotsman set,the controller is just a basic starter,but I already had better one,so it’s just a back-up,just in case.tally-ho,brits!

I really wanted to give this set 5 stars. The loco and tender are beautiful, the coaches are beautiful. The track is a little tough to assemble, but that’s because it’s good, tightly connected track.
The only issue I have is the controller. When I powered up the loco and began running the train, I could hear an annoying buzzing sound coming from it. This happened at any speed I tried. I had done some research on the Hornby power controller before buying this set, and was aware of this issue. I happened to have a Rail Power 1370 controller handy, so I rigged up some wiring that would work with the power jack on the Hornby rail.
The train performed flawlessly when I substituted the other controller. Smooth and quiet at every speed.
Buy this and get a better controller for it, too. You won’t be disappointed.
I am getting back into model rail roading and was looking for this particular locomotive. I was aware of this set but was unsure of the quality compared to a separate locomotive off hornbys website. After receiving this set I am very satisfied with my purchase. The rail carriages have more detail than expected, locomotive itself has a fair amount of weight and decent details. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to start the hobby

I found this to be a great starter kit if embarking on the model railway hobby. Engine and carriages are great as is the track.
The only thing to be aware is the controller that comes with it isn’t great. I’m using a Hornby HM2000 for my layout instead. Gauegmaster also good.
But otherwise, happy days
My youngest son bought this with his Christmas money, and he’s really chuffed (sorry) with it – it comes with everything needed to get started. The loco is very well detailed, and runs extremely smoothly. Given the price of the items separately, this set is great value. Looks like I now have to make him a base board and find a home for it…
It took my several hours to assemble the track but due to the hard work on properly assembling the track it all works. I love this set and will order hornby from here on out.

I love this train set so much and was one I wanted when a youngster but never got. Hornby are the absolute masters and always have been. The detail on the set is lovely and many an hour has and will be playing with this special set..fantastic low price on Amazon too

Very surprised with the coaches they look really good and have interior details. Loco looks great and has an 8 pin DCC plug. This the first train set that I have purchased that includes a turnout, And the turnout is power routing and the points lock into place. As train sets go this is a nice one.
It is a great item but was very disappointed that it did not come in an outer box as it was a present and was just lucky I was coming up the road when it was delivered or else husband would have known what present was .

Bought this for my grandson for Christmas and to make sure that everything worked my husband set it up. (And played with it all afternoon). A bit fiddly getting the track assembled and my main concern was the controller. From reading reviews a lit seemed to have ones that didn’t work which is why we set it up. Value for money? Yes possibly. The controller is a bit flimsy and cheap looking. Not sure how long it will last. Also no rail map so have had to send for one. The controller in the flying Scotsman set appears to be a better quality. It’s fir a 5 year old so would recommend .

Good oo’ scaled model we’ll presented to usual Hornby standard but a little to expensive.
The loco and carriages are nicely detailed and the track and fishplates work well, the controller could do with a upgrade as the forward and reverse slide switch is very stiff and takes a lot of pressure to move it. worst of all is the coupling from the loco to the tender is very weak and flimsy eg keeps dropping off the tender which also could do with a decent upgrade. Take a look at the older hornby flying scotsman how the tender attaches to the train you will see it is more stronger and robust.
The coaches are free rolling and nicely detailed.
The Scotsman itself is simplistic in detail and livery, but gets the illusion across well. As for running, it has enough power to pull double the coaches it came with; maybe even more. The motor also seems to be fitted with a flywheel, as its slowing down is smooth and realistic. Slow speed is top notch, with some skill on controlling you can make really controlled starts and acceleration.
The only issue is that the controller that comes with the set is mediocre at best, only inching out half of the model’s true speed capabilities. It only seems to have 2 settings: moving or not moving. I know the model’s full capabilities because my second purchase right after this was a high quality controller that simply put the controller from this set to shame.
Overall, a great starter kit for a great hobby, but buy a higher quality controller before anything else.
Item exactly as advertised. Packaged well, no damaged pieces. Not suitable for children, definitely an adult “toy”. The only problem is that if the train is derailed or has a fault on the track, the power cuts out and you have to turn it off at the mains. It needs a reset button. The controller is really cheap.
Best value for money available. Runs well and looks great.
Works great and the controller isn’t the best but does the job and has a port so you can wire up led lights etc witch is a bonus
Got this in memory of our son that past away on Christmas day due to covid him and my grandson loved hornby and the controll is not going please help me

Pretty detailed model for the price point. Engine is a “Railroad” series, so they’re usually simpler for someone on a budget or beginners.
Set came without any kind of box or packaging materials. Seriously, the shipping label was just stuck in the set. Engine came damaged, missing the coupler and having some smaller details broken off (both sets of steps and a buffer).
No big deal, I can repair it, just know that not everyone has the materials or know how

It’s the flying Scotsman what’s not to like great model.
The set was exactly what i was looking for to get back into model trains. The track likes to shift when on the trackmat though, but thats really just physics and I cant fault the set for that.
