The fracturing of a man filmed well but lacking at times due to pace poor use of setting It’s no fight club or even a falling down but if you can settle in for the slow burn the circling of the drain of arthur’s final care in the world is a compelling watch.
Not much to do with even the dark night version of the DC setting shows to date (familiar names/positions but that’s about the end of it) but thankfully despite the poor use of the setting the movie can carry itself well as long as you are not put off by the utterly sluggish opening half.
Not just funny It seems that most comic stories in recent years seem to be origin stories with X men for example However this is a origin story it also deals with the issues of mental health and bullying. As a result you can understand why the joker does what he does and becomes an anti hero The performances are very good if they don’t make another I would be surprised
Be unsettled or be bored. It’s a bit of Joker wrapped around an Animal Farm for the times.
I thought about explaining my choice of Headline and opener, then changed my mind. You either get it or you don’t. You either agree with The Joker being used this way or you don’t. The list goes on.
For me, this film went beyond what any other has tried to do with a comic book character and absolutely nailed it. This is the only film I’ve ever seen that has held a mirror up to the world I see around me. At least twice I didn’t like it. But I had to keep watching.
Great dark approach We all know who the Joker is, who Batman etc. are, but this story goes deeper, shows a psychological darkness and the abyss of human souls. Unlike the other superhero movies it is a movie that seems to be from this world. Joker’s struggles are heartbreaking and real. The way the world reacts to the Joker’s actions was never more reproducible than now.
Brilliant Film! One of the best films to watch its up there with Shawshank Redemption. This is one of the best new classic films of its era. Completely different outlook focusing on the villians life story and background rather than the usual super heros. This film strongly acknowledges mental health, which is a brave stride forwards in film, for this day and age. it brings Understanding and moving away from ignorance and fear. Its one of the best if not the best films of 2019.
It is quite tragic so if you are looking for a happy film don’t choose this. If your looking for a film which will move you and have impact choose this one.
Fantastic film... really bad seller! Saw the joker at the cinema. Brilliant brilliant film.
Highly recommended, a very deep physcological portrayal of a disturbed character.
Shame I can’t say the same for the seller of this item.
Requested three times to cancel the order as I realised it wasn’t suitable for the intended recipient, the seller ignored my messages and still dispatched it.
Requested twice to return it and my requests were ignored.
Amazon customer services contacted the seller on my behalf and they ignored that message too…. not what I would call a recommended market place trader….
Superb After many years not being a fan of DC and Marvel movies I think I recently stated in a review that I am finally getting on board with so many others, just not a total fanatic that buys every action figure and highly priced collection piece that is available. There is and has been some actors that are a bit wacky in real life that has certainly helped their career, Jack Nicholson, Bette Davis ( Bette Davis eyes ), Gary Busey the man filmmakers are frightened to cast, etc etc. Actors that can easily pull off a mad character because they a bit eccentric, melancholy, in the acting world they are what Amadeus was in the classical music world ie overly energetic and sometimes compromised personalities. Not sure if Mr. Phoenix is in that category? I don’t know a great deal about him as an actor or his personal life. But his portrayal off the Joker must be his greatest role and the highlight of his film career. His performance was nothing short off brilliant, even though De Niro had a small part in the film, Phoenix was the leading star and this was his film. The film itself was dark, the way his character evolved into the Joker was excellent. I truly and totally enjoyed this film and 100% recommend it. Maybe I am a bit nuts too!
Tells the story of The Joker wonderfully portrayed. This film has to be the best that I have seen in a long while. I loved every minute of it, as you see Arthur slowly losing grip of reality, from the continual betrayal of Gotham city against him, as he tries his hardest to fit in a world, that in his mind he thinks everyone and everything is against him. No matter what he tries his best to brush things off, but like anyone, humans can only take so much. Through the continuous beatings and the real truth about his own family, that finally sends him over the edge.
The twist and turns in the story, left me shocked. The fantastic acting from Joaquin Phoenix just blew me away, the script is so well done too. I highly recommend this film.
A Mask Slips ‘Joker’ starring Joaquin Phoenix as the eponymous Batman arch-villain is a 2019 box-office smash hit and it is easy to see why. This is not your standard-fare, DC Comics type film — Bruce Wayne appearing only fleetingly as a child — rather a delineation of The Joker’s rise from failed comedian and entertainer to prominence as Batman’s future bte noire. Perhaps worthwhile mentioning I am no super-hero fan though I did like Batman as a child and still to this day believe the 1989 film starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson offers terrific entertainment.
But Joker is no child’s film, contrarily a frightful insight into the mind of the psychopathic, narcissistic, personality disordered Joker, otherwise known as Arthur Fleck. Joker, while a gripping watch is at nub a scrutiny of mental illness at the extreme of extremes yet the basic ingredients of how or why people become that way are all there for viewers to see; significant research evidently having gone in to capturing the mindset of a personality badly gone wrong. And all masterfully depicted by screen titan and method actor Phoenix.
There are many simultaneously yet asynchronous moving parts within Joker’s personality constitution, most to this day poorly understood, certainly in wider public domain. Many associate narcissism with literal love of one’s own reflection but the condition transcends this notion over and again, in truth comprising a serious mental illness, only now rising in popular conscious or awareness. As such, narcissism is a term bandied about sans comprehension, typically on social media where spurned lovers vent at ‘narcissistic’ ex-love interests, attributing all gone wrong to outside failings through ‘gaslighting’ (gaslighting in its most basic form is projecting or pinning one’s own weaknesses, vulnerabilities or shortcomings onto a subject of interest in the hope of eliciting a reaction, thence satisfying the need for Supply) when the truth regularly lies closer to home. At the core of it all in layman’s terms is ‘the want to be wanted’ (see Cheap Trick for those light-hearted or U2’s With or Without You for the more serious as audible representations of narcissistic mind-set), many experts in psychoanalysis believing the source of the issue to lie with rejection — oftentimes parental rejection as is essentially the case with Phoenix’s Joker whose own mother was all abusive, narcissistic herself, besides a deeply de-stabilising influence. In order to make up this perceived deficit, narcissists will go to extravagant, eye-catching lengths to gain recognition, positive or negative. Love, sexual desire, adulation, dependence or fame; it matters little whom the source of Narcissistic Supply is – their own children (dependence), a lover (sexual desire), an audience or societal grouping (fame and adulation), with these last pertinent to Joker here as an aspiring comedian.
Phoenix’s Joker suffers a succession of personally catastrophic narcissistic injuries, the two ‘biggies’ being the realisation he was in fact adopted, coupled with a public ridiculing at the hands of long-term hero, Robert De Niro’s Murray Franklin, during an episode of Franklin’s talk-show. Both, congruent to that already stipulated, have rejection at their core. There is something tragic-comical about Fleck’s early appearances in the film as he is first brought onto Franklin’s stage as an all-round, mummy-loving nice guy who laps up audience adulation, which in real-world terms, would be very much of condescending, there goes the freak-show sort. The Joker’s mask or make-up is symbolic on several levels: most importantly it is his jovial, fun-loving front to the world when within lies a deeply disturbed, permanently unsettled human being. As demonstrated skilfully by Phoenix here as Fleck/Joker, the image presented to the world by narcissists is very much incongruent to what they actually are behind the mask. Such can shed tears, such can laugh, such can create friendships, such can present themselves as the best parents in the world but the truth would suggest there is little to no genuine outbound empathy or relatability at work. Pyschopathy, sociopathy, personality disorders and narcissism are individual, conceivably inter-related afflictions all with one common characteristic, the inability to understand or be mindful of others’ feelings. But this is not to state all psychopaths are narcissists etc, etc. Many sufferers in actuality loathe themselves at some level.
Joker is almost exclusively centred upon exactly that individual as we incrementally witness that mask mentioned slip into dark, destructive insanity. Filmed in New York, Gotham has come to be considered the accepted, fictional equivalent of that metropolis, Joker unravelling amidst the steams and stews of less-than salubrious neighbourhoods, with all the colour or otherwise these bring. As a triumphant crescendo, Joker is shown in his element, celebrated and cheered by a riotous sub-cultural following, quite apart from new source of Supply — why, who by or wherefores matter little to Fleck: he is accepted by somebody.
Very good The best film I have watched this year. The ending was messed up by the last couple of minutes, which only served to confuse the story, but thats the only bad thing I have to say about it. Would have loved it if the film had ended with Joker being rescued by the clown masks and lead off to start a new life in the shadows – that would have been perfect.
Superb acting by JP Didn’t fancy this until my son recommended it. I know it’s comic book but boy does it highlight the ravages of poverty and poor access to mental health services. I am 57 and have rarely seen acting by JP as superb as this
The Joker's Wild There have been some really excellent re-imaginings, coupled with brilliant portrayals, of The Joker over the years. Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger are possibly the two to mention here. Joaquim Phoenix version is certainly up there with those two best of breads.
The creation of the character is wonderfully thought out and Phoenix gives us the laugh, the running, nervous twitches to make Joker his own while managing the difficult task of not making the character too over the top.
Meanwhile the story which fairly much keeps with the Batman back story frame work while fully endowing Joker with a full if very complex personality.
Better still, just for a change, the director chose to concentrate on the central performance and leave the FX at home. So, the film works as a well worked narrative.
Tough to watch but Worth i I was aware of the controversy around this ‘origin’ story, so I left it a while before watching it. It’s savage at times but the violence is in context; Joker has the feel of a ’70s movie, with astonishing acting. It reminds me of films like Straw Dogs, which challenge you to examine your feelings about violence.
It also asks questions about the treatment of vulnerable people in society, especially those with mental health issues as a result of childhood trauma and the shallowness of modern culture. This balances out what might otherwise have been an endorsement of violent revenge and vigilante-ism ( if that’s the right word?)
This film was pure art! Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film! Joaquin Phoenix totally deserved his Oscar for this beauty. The commitment he put into the character of Arthur is in every scene. Yes, this film doesn’t necessarily tie in with the real backstory of the Batman’s Joker, but it was meant to be a reimagined origin story of him so…for me, it worked! I loved the way mental health gets explored in this and the way it was perceived by others, in the film. The overall message really hits home, as today’s world can be truly unforgiving when it comes to people who suffer with various mental health issues. They don’t get enough credit! I really feel for the character of Arthur and relate to him in many ways. Joaquin did a great job at drawing you into the character and his world. It’s a true masterpiece and although Joker is incredibly intense and (to some extent) painful, I will watch it again and again. This film needed to be made.
Joke Joaquin Phoenix’s acting was absolutely brilliant! Film maybe slow for some and watched as a stand alone Joker movie, it tells a dramatic story. The character Arthur Fleck is effected by society around him and the treatment of him. Joaquin is able to show the vulnerability of the character, the darkness and psychological consequences that occur. Great Movie.
Mind blowing This has got to be one if the best films i have seen in a long time . At points it was funny sad and unpredictable it made you feel so bad for the joker , when you see and understand what he went through as a child and most certainly as an adult you can sympathise with him . Theres one point in the film where you can see he has changed for good and he will never be the same again . This film shows the slow mental decline of a person and its not at all a nice thing to see but its reality it happens all the time in society, this is why it was heavely criticised so much by the woke generations when it first came out because people dont like the reality of this film because they can see themselves looking back at them .
Notwithstanding any negative reviews regarding this masterpiece (there’s a reason why just 2% were not happy, (and 81% were) which included complaints about anything BUT the film itself), this is a must-see.
Some reviews complained that the film has little to do with it’s ‘Super Hero’ histrionics. In fact, it has everything to do with it.
Joker’s of the past, have all had a complicated personality, which has included deviant / abnormal behaviour.
This could only have arisen from someone with a learned, warped view of peers, family and society, which was in fact, demonstrated within the film itself.
A modern classic has just been made. Honestly one of the best films I have seen in years.
The back story to the whole Batman saga, told from the perspective of a downtrodden every day joe.
This is ‘Falling Down’ (the film) for the 2020’s.
If the whole conspiracy theory ethos of “hidden in plain sight” was true (which we all know it wasn’t / isn’t), then this would be the “we told you so” film.
The staggering inequality and corruption of modern society laid bare in one act of madness.
Fantastic acting but long-winded. This was obviously aiming for a Taxi-Driver / King of Comedy feel and pulls it off( especially with De Nero in the cast). I can see why it was lauded so much but I thought they laid on Joker’s problems a bit thick to be honest. It just rumbled on from one horrible event to another: all back story and no plot. That’s the only thing stopping it being a 5 star film in my view.
Worth The Hype It’s not my first viewing, never my last. On the big screen, it was devastating and with repeated viewings, there’s more to uncover, in the sense of the careful work done to create a story where you slip under the skin of a broken, almost sympathetic character until you’re almost culpable in the devastating actions of the last act. One wonders how this got made as it did, without a single fast food tie-in or a cursory nod to the more mainstream DCU. It bears the influence of the era, movies like Taxi Driver where social issues to show the damage and horror underneath. It also ties into the maxim that no antagonist believes themselves to be the villain. Please, no sequels, no spin offs, let this one stand as a curio which rewards repeated, if not gentle viewing.
Outstanding Joaquin Phoenix is one of my favourite actors and he doesn’t disappoint in this movie! He’s incredible as The Joker. Watching the transformation of someone with a disturbing home background and mental illness become this character. I found some of the scenes difficult to watch, but the film was gripping all the way through.
I would highly recommend this movie. Although I did feel quite disturbed for a while after watching it. I might need to watch some cat videos on You Tube now to make myself feel better.
An outstanding adaptation of comic book story to ultra reality This is simply the darkest best film made in the last 20yrs! A tale of mental health coupled with societal problems that lead to the creation of a monster. Superbly acted by Phoenix a simply mesmerising performance of exceptional acting ability. The setting the mood the story fit perfectly. If you don’t like this film or don’t get it you live in alternative universe of pretend rainbows and glitter. A compelling watch from start to finish for film fans who demand more and Joker delivers!
So glad I was finally able to see this movie The Joker has always been my top villain with not even a close second place. And I found the first up to an hour of this movie delightfully harrowing. Seeing what he was put through, to seeing him finding out his own past. Relating with everything up until he began to make all the wrong choices and literally feeling pure empathy for him. The scene where his mother is in the bath and criticises his career choice literally broke me… The initial character development of this film is phenomenal, as is the entire movie, but never before have I been so interested in just simple build-up. Never.
Jaoquin Phoenix does this role an absolute masterclass of justice, I’ve seen Gladiator – Never noticed him, I’ve seen Buffalo Soldiers, Never noticed him. He plays the Joker and all of a sudden, I don’t even notice the other actors around him.
Sorry Jack Nicholson, You just became my 2nd favorite Joker!
Nervous tension escalator - Downward madness spiral Great film.. for adults.
Shocking. Twisted. Fresh.
(I still have questions as to his true origin! -cleverly done – or I am dumb)
The movie draws you in to the world it is trying to create, and makes no glaring flaws which release you from its grip.
Grounded in the reality of someone who is mentally ill.
Which makes for uncomfortable and disturbing viewing that is at the same time engrossing and energetic film making.
I would very much like to see what kind of Batman would complement this type of Joker.
War torn Ex military would be my suggestion..
Dark, depressing and brilliant. When I read Alan Moore’s take on Joker all those years ago, it was something like this that was sparked in my imagination.
It’s not a happy film, and if you’re a Batman fan you won’t NECESSARILY like it- this is the dark, crazy, Arkham Asylum world of Joker and not Batman.
Arthur Fleck, through abuse and battery, is not a well man. Lied to by his mother, the incongruity of what society says and what society does- especially to him- finally breaks him and after a period of delusional happiness, the depressing reality sets in and via a murder or four, he becomes Joker.
Ignore the political stuff that’s tied to it- all of this is projected onto the movie, and not really in it.
If you like films that are dark then this will float your boat.
Good but depressing. Great performances and a good story, but boy, is this film somewhat depressing. Joaquin Phoenix gives an impressive performance as the Joker though, and it is nice to see Zazie Beetz (although fleetingly). Remember though that this is a Joker origin story, and so the crazy clown only makes an appearance near the end. The main part of the film is on how Arthur Fleck’s depression and mental instability drive him to change from being a victim of society to evolving into a killing couldn’t-care-less psychopath. It does this very well, certainly, but do not expect it to be a barrel of laughs.
Best movie EVER! Just the best movie I’ve ever seen…totally awesome. Read into it what you will but it makes you think. It’s a fine line!! A must see…many times!!
AMAZING!!! This film hands down deserves every Oscar going this is on level with the Dark Knight Heath Ledger joker. Amazing performance fantastic directing acting and writing. Definitely worth watching.
Amazing Absolutely Amazing !!. This movie right here, made me have a very soft spot for Arther, despite all them crazy ass killings that he did. He’s obviously not right in the head but anyways. People can really be so cruel. The Joker may be a bad guy, but bad guys also live in a world where, other bad guys are out to get them too. More so, they’re the ones that deserve the most punishment. He was conditioned into being bad, I mean first of all, he was abandoned, neglected, how is a child meant to understand unconditional love when he’s in a situation like that. It all bottles down to childhood, and clearly he didn’t have a very great one.
You haven't seen this before! This film is so well acted its breath taking considering what we have to deal with in modern cinema. How the lead role is performed is mesmerosing…to take such an ”Unrealistic” subject matter yet make it appear so real is something only truly talented film makers and actors can do. At no time did I stop the film to get water or anything. I have watched it several times. I am so glad that I own it – its one of those you can return to with friends a multiple of times.
Great film 😊 Great film. I’d wanted to see it for quite a while and I wasn’t disappointed. Joaquin Phoenix was brilliant in the lead role. One of the best films I’ve watched in a long time.
Dark psychological thrille Quite a sad film looking at how having a parent with mental illness affects their children. Brilliant acting and with humour sprinkled throughout the film. Enjoyed it.
An amazing movie I have seen this movie a few times and wanted to get it to keep on Amazon. In my opinion it is one of the greatest movies ever made, due a lot to Joaquin Phoenixs’ phenomenal performance.
Excelle One of the best movies that I’ve watched in recent times. A portrayal of one man’s decent into insanity from being beaten down by society. Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant in it.
Be Nice Absolutely fantastic film. Epitomises how we never know how the mind works and the importance of not ridiculing others. The acting is flawless , a deep film which has been watched over and over agai
Amazing film and amazing actor who starred as the Joker. I liked how easy it was to purchase this amazing film which I will never get fed up of watching.
It arrived safely and ahead of schedule Not had the chance to watch the whole movie, however as always I checked the box and DVD and both were in really good condition with no obvious signs of damage so i am confident that there will be no problems.
Unexpectedly good. I didn’t really think this film would be anything more than a pleasant distraction for an hour or so. However, it is beautifully done and offers a real insight into the mental meltdown into madness, of a desperately tortured soul. Joaquin Phoenix steals the show and his performance stays with you long after the film has ended.
Powerful and deep, manic laughter in despai This is a comic book story in a million – one actually based on the desperate lives of those who occupy the bottom tiers of US society. Disconnected, alienated lives without the promise of any kind of fulfilment. Joaquin Phoenix is superb in his portrayal of Arthur Fleck whose only escape from the oppression of his existence is a descent into madness. A dark narrative indeed, masterfully written and played out.
Brilliantly Directed Masterpiece This film is an absolute marvel. I was looking forward to watching it for ages and when I finally got round to it, I was definitely not disappointed.
It is possibly the most deeply moving film I have ever seen, and I have seen quite a few. The way you are let into the main character, Arthur’s life and emotions is astonishing. Some very dark concepts are covered with amazing detail which really prompts you to think how lucky you are.
If you do decide to watch it, just know that it is not for the faint hearted. There are some very heavy scenes along with some detailed gore and violence. The topics covered are extremely sensitive in places.
Awesome I purchased this awesome movie because it’s totally different to any previous movies about the joker and we get to see his childhood and how he becomes the joker.I highly recommend this movie and it’s awesome.

Superb performance from Joaquin Phoenix, he made that character, totally engrossing
Tough to watch but Worth i
I was aware of the controversy around this ‘origin’ story, so I left it a while before watching it.
Joke
Joaquin Phoenix’s acting was absolutely brilliant! Film maybe slow for some and watched as a stand alone Joker movie, it tells a dramatic story. The character Arthur Fleck is effected by society around him and the treatment of him. Joaquin is able to show the vulnerability of the character, the darkness and psychological consequences that occur. Great Movie.
Mind blowing
This has got to be one if the best films i have seen in a long time .
A believable take on how Joker came to be.
I didn’t expect to enjoy it but I did. Phoenix is a brilliant actor.
Phoenix Is Superb!
Incredible acting by Phoenix!
Faultless acting by Joaquin Phoenix!
Worth The Hype
It’s not my first viewing, never my last.
Outstanding
Joaquin Phoenix is one of my favourite actors and he doesn’t disappoint in this movie!
An outstanding adaptation of comic book story to ultra reality
This is simply the darkest best film made in the last 20yrs! A compelling watch from start to finish for film fans who demand more and Joker delivers!
love i
well now we know why Joker is for chaos and not law and orde
Incredible acting
Joaquin Phoneix’s acting in this movie is absolutely incredible. Well deserved Academy Award for it.
So glad I was finally able to see this movie
The Joker has always been my top villain with not even a close second place.
Nervous tension escalator - Downward madness spiral
Great film.. for adults.
Shocking. Twisted.
Awesome
Wow it deserved all of the Oscar nomination and more. Great…
great!
I never bother doing reviews, but this film is simply amazing.
Amazing
It’s just a brilliant take on such an iconic characte
Thought provoking
interpretation of a man living in a dismissive, uncaring society and all the problems created by not fitting i
Good but depressing.
Incredible Acting
The film had me.from the beginning
Great film and superb acting
Definitely worth a watch
Phenomenal
OMG this is a phenomenal movie,
Enjoyed it from start to finish, nothing bad to say about it,
Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal, probably his best acting of all time so far, he was just simply faultless, plays his character superbly,
The 4k version is just out of this world, absolutely stunning clear picture quality.
The sound was also stunning, Dolby Atmos on this movie is just class. But you do have other options to use in the Audio section.
If you haven’t seen this or your planning to watch this movie then I would totally recommend you going for this, you won’t be disappointed.
Great acting
Joaquin Phoenix is superb in this film, I think it’s his best ever..

Intense
Fascinating film that sucks you in and you have to watch to the end. The slow mental decline of the man who became The Joker. Very good

Put on a happy face
Love this film so much I own it on dvd and had to buy it digitally so can watch it on my iPad whenever I wa
Amazing
Absolutely Amazing !!.
Greatest performance
Fascinating, moving, thought-provoking film. And from Joaquin Phoenix one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen on film.
Good film
Decent film with good enough plot to keep you interested and some food for thought if you want something to chat about afterwards.
Great film 😊
Great film. I’d wanted to see it for quite a while and I wasn’t disappointed. Joaquin Phoenix was brilliant in the lead role. One of the best films I’ve watched in a long time.
Great film
Not a crazy action film but a glimpse into the mind of a mentally unwell character at the mercy of a cruel society
Dark psychological thrille
Quite a sad film looking at how having a parent with mental illness affects their children. Brilliant acting and with humour sprinkled throughout the film. Enjoyed it.
An amazing movie
I have seen this movie a few times and wanted to get it to keep on Amazon. In my opinion it is one of the greatest movies ever made, due a lot to Joaquin Phoenixs’ phenomenal performance.
Excelle
One of the best movies that I’ve watched in recent times. A portrayal of one man’s decent into insanity from being beaten down by society. Joaquin Phoenix is brilliant in it.
Be Nice
Absolutely fantastic film.
It arrived safely and ahead of schedule
Not had the chance to watch the whole movie, however as always I checked the box and DVD and both were in really good condition with no obvious signs of damage so i am confident that there will be no problems.
Powerful and deep, manic laughter in despai
This is a comic book story in a million – one actually based on the desperate lives of those who occupy the bottom tiers of US society. Disconnected, alienated lives without the promise of any kind of fulfilment. Joaquin Phoenix is superb in his portrayal of Arthur Fleck whose only escape from the oppression of his existence is a descent into madness. A dark narrative indeed, masterfully written and played out.
Brilliantly Directed Masterpiece
This film is an absolute marvel.
An overall masterpiece.
Awesome
I purchased this awesome movie because it’s totally different to any previous movies about the joker and we get to see his childhood and how he becomes the joker.I highly recommend this movie and it’s awesome.
