Arrived very well packaged – makes sorting the waste so much easier in terms of splitting out for various recycling external bins (communal where we live). Looks sleek. Love it !!
It’s designer-ish and fine. The packaging is not all recyclable. Should be OK. Too bad the driver dumped it by my front gate and didn’t tell me that he had done that. It could easily have been stolen.
As bins go can’t fault it, space saving design works well along with carbon odour capture witch is the best with seen. Little steep on price but a quality product none the less.
Excellent bin plenty of storage for both recycling and waste. Easy to clean, built to last. Highly recommend.
Like the style and size. Recycling bin little bit sticky to put back at times but maybe because its new? Sticker marks arw still.there from labels but you only see when wiping it down.
Really like this bin. It is not complex, so will last. Didn’t need to buy specific bags, a few different bags fitted well.
Great good looking product. The stainless steel doesn’t seem to tarnish or show finger marks unlike other bins. I purchased the 40L which is good capacity but would probably recommend the 60L for homes with more than 2 people. It’s easy to clean, functional and a great addition in my kitchen.
Why do bins need sensors and batteries? They don’t. This is a great design, nice and simple. Why there aren’t more stacking bins like this I will never know. Even my kids were like: wow, great bin, that is amazing mum!
I want to love this bin. Really I do. It looks lovely and is neat and compact and I love the food compartment but for the price it’s a bit unsteady and rattly. I didn’t pay full price but even at that when a rubbish bin costs over 100 you expect a bit of substance. Aesthetically I can’t fault it though and the compartments are roomy and well made. Just the whole bin is a bit cheap feeling when you open the lid!
Its specious, Strong and trendy looking. Highly recommend it. It comes with bin bag for each section is a really nice packaging
Stunning design and looks fab – I bought I returned one as felt the price for a new one was just to expensive and not worth spending 175 (or similar) on a bin! Have to say the returned one I received is in perfect condition!
Love this bin. Perfect size. Replaced all three of my previous waste bins.
Expensive but best purchase in a while. I love that all is organised into one bin. Pleasing to the eye. Good quality. Easy to use and empty. I’ve found that 50 litre bags fit fine. Would recommend to everyone
purchased this product and I will tell you its worth the money.
Very happy up to the usual Joseph Joseph quality and style
Love this bin. I’ve even got my teens recycling now! Easy to empty and clean too.
Just love it!
It’s pricey for sure but it’s the sort of bin you can get excited about. Great design, form and function, lots of great details and really well made. We love it. Looks great and does the job.
Sturdy totem bin, I was hesitant from moving from a single 60lt bin to this one with smaller compartments, but my doubts were unfounded.
Capacity wise works perfectly for two people, we use the bottom compartment for recycling items (though we keep the bigger boxes separately).
I don’t have much use for the food waste bin inside the main compartment (it is too small for us), so I use it for other things.
Looks very modern and is easy to manipulate.
Regarding the bin liners, I use 50lt biodegradable ones I order from Amazon regularly, which work fine for me.
A bit of a pricey item, but it is very well designed and fits perfectly the space I had, so very happy with it.
This is just like every other Joseph and Joseph kitchen and household appliance and tool…brilliant.
Holds a lot of rubbish @ food bin good also bottom bin can get a lot in it easy to use
I spent a long time looking for a good bin, and although expensive this is excellent. Space efficient, lovely feel the way it moves and opens and aesthetically pleasing. Very happy.
It’s smart and worth the money.
Fast delivery. Thank you.
Ideal for a small kitchen – all the rubbish in one place
It’s great to have a bin that is stacked rather than two taking up additional floor space. It’s easy to use and looks grea
Have had this for a while now and I’m so happy I went with this one. It takes up the same amount of space as the previous bin we had just for recycling, but doesn’t feel like we have less space. It’s easy to clean and get bags for.
Best purchase I’ve ever made. Will definitely buy Joseph Joseph products again with no hesitation.
This is the best bin we have ever had if I was you I would buy one
Ok so this review is based on the fact we bought this in the Boxing Day sales for 119, which we (mainly myself as my GF thinks it was 100) can live with. It’s pretty nice looking and cleans easily, the height is something you get used to pretty quickly and isn’t an issue. The recycling part is a lot better and tidier than our old recycling bin which was our kitchen table, it also makes you wash things out and squash them more as a habit which means no more jumping up and down in the wheelie bin come collection day. The top half is very easy to use with the opening leaver and the air holes in the top compartment means the bag pulls out easy when full. We moved the food waste caddy to the recycling compartment to maximise full usage of the bags in the top as they aren’t the cheapest to keep buying (amazon definitely the cheapest place to find the proper JJ ones). My Gf is obsessed with mopping our floor and she finds it easier to move the lower compartment first and then the top becomes easier to move than as a whole unit.
Overall we are very happy with the waste & recycling unit and would buy/recommend getting one in the sales
Nice bin. Best one I have ever had. A bit pricey
Previously I had at least three separate containers by my fridge… took space and not to mention looked untidy. Now everything goes in one unit. Love it. Could be a bit cheaper, personally think it’s way too much to charge for it.
Excellent product. Very easy to remove the inside when emptying it and cleaning it. Very stylish. Hilda a reasonable amount of paper and plastics
The base wheels were fixed on slightly uneven. This means if you not careful it looks odd. Not really impressed but whateve
Absolutely meet my expectations and more. Love this bin and design…
Bit worried that it was way more than I’d normally pay for a kitchen bin but so glad I splashed out… Totally worth it..
I really like this bin. Good capacity and it does hold the smell inside.
Well made and looks good. Has a fingerprint resistant finish which is easy to keep shiny. Easy to organise your food waste/general waste/recycling. The JJ bags fit perfectly and don’t leak at all – I’ve been using the same bag in the lower recycling section for about 3 weeks.
Only 4 stars due to one slight design flaw – the food waste container sits inside the upper general waste bucket, which leads you to want to empty that bucket when it’s only half full. Would be better to shape the upper bucket so that the food waste container sits outside of it. Thought about putting general waste in the bottom bucket but that isn’t protected by the odour filter.
Very pleased with my purchase. More expensive than the average bin but very well designed and excellent quality
Looks nice and suits the kitchen
BUT it’s a bit rickety and does not feel as sturdy or durable as our old Brabantia bin – the lid sounds like cheap thin plastic and the metal warbling when opening or closing
This was a present as my husband chose Joseph Joseph Bin three years ago and we have been delighted with i
Really good sized bin and makes it easy to keep things tidy and clean. The push button / lid opening is quite flimsy and feels like it might break easily as others have mentioned, but we’re just trying to be delicate with it and hope that it doesn’t break!
I am delighted with this bin combination. I would highly recommend it.
Excellent quality product as you’d expect from Joseph Joseph. Brought from amazon for the speedy delivery.
Looks good not like any kitchen bin I have ever seen, so smart and very neat, expensive but quality product.
I love this item, the kitchen is much tidier now. It’s sturdy so far haven’t experienced the lid latch problem
Excellent storage capacity & very sturdy, can easily deal with a large cat playing on i
This has made my kitchen so much tidier and makes you more inclined to recycle so its a win win.
Very fast delivery and futuristic design! The bin has only just arrive but it appears to be high quality.
Love it ! Love it !! Been looks for a splint bin for some time but many are bulky and big, this one is slim, light weight, wheels on recycle tub make it easy to slide in and out ! No smells great all in one bin.
Expensive but worth it. Looks stylish in my newly renovated kitchen. Makes recycling easy and it’s a dream to keep clean.
Looks good and very functional – all the details thought through.
Time will tell how the bin performs and it seems like a lot of money to drop on a bin but we had specific requirements that this bin fulfilled in terms of size and looks.
It looks great, the bottom portion glides out on its wheels and it just feels like good quality overall.
We went for stainless steel, although know how easy it is to dent and catch your eye forever more but its what we needed to match the kitchen, but there are other colour options available.
The bin bags are a certain size and shape and although you get a few thrown in for free, these are way too expensive to use as regular bin bags going forward and we actually found alternatives for MUCH cheaper.
So far so good – would definitely recommend.
Great size, enabling you to seperate your waste as you dispose of i
One of these with 50/60 litre capacities would suit families better – a trash compactor version would be good too
Nice quality and design. Joesph bags are expensive but great quality.
I was looking for a bin to hold all recycling and general waste this is just fabulous
Took a while choosing to get this bin. So glad I got it. It’s brilliant. You can get other bin bag for it, just look about.
Great bin waist height and easy opening mechanism, seems very sturdy. Very pleased. Like other reviewers I would say it’s only suitable for a small household the 40L.
Have wanted this bin for a while but was put off by the price tag – so happy it came up in a Lightning Deal. Due to the layout of our kitchen the bin can’t be hidden so I needed something that looks good but also holds a lot of rubbish.
The bin looks really good. The included bin bags were a nice touch. I find the bin holds a lot too.
The only niggle is that the bottom part on wheels comes out easily but sometimes sticks as it goes back in. Whether this is just because it is new and will loosen slightly over time I don’t know.
————-
After two months use, the handle used to open the bin started sticking. I have since been sent a replacement bin – the opening is completely different to my previous bin so may be the issue has been rectified.
OMG I can’t believe I’m so excited about a bin!! It’s well proportioned sleek and tidy!
Absolutely love this. I’ve been getting lousy bins for years and each time they just didn’t work for me in terms of organising my trash & bags didn’t stay properly. Although this is expensive for a bin but an average bin from the shops cost 70-100 so this is a good buy
I went back and forth looking for the right bin for 6 months. I really couldn’t justify spending that much money on a bin, but I’m currently working from home (like everyone else right now) in my kitchen and sitting amongst the various recycling containers got on my nerves more and more as the days went on.
I have to say am so glad I took the plunge, it was a great purchase. The bin is very sturdy, I’ve had it over 2 months and haven’t noticed any issues with the opening/closing mechanism. The compartments are a decent size. It’s very easy to clean and looks really nice. I went for the stainless steel model and it looks really great in our kitchen.
My only gripe is not with the bin but with the Joseph Joseph bin bags: The bin comes with 2 IW7 bin bags and 2 IW2 liners for the compost section. The IW7 bags are a VERY tight fit, obviously they were made for a different model and just about fit this one. They also recommend using the IW6 bags which are much too big. I found a generic brand at the local supermarket for less than half the price and they work just fine. Ditto the compost liners, they cost nearly a tenner for 50, and you can buy a roll of 120 for about 6 quid.
All and all I can definitely recommend this bin.
I do like this bin, however the storage capacity isn’t great. I literally find myself emptying the bottom half of the bin 2-3 time a week and have also ditched the food section as it stopped me being able to put more waste in the bin. I guess this is just the norm with dual capacity bins
Two bins in one, help separate recycle and daily trash. Easy to use, strong and sturdy.
I’d definitely suggest forking out a bit more on a decent bin like this. Looks fab.
Love it. Love it. Love it. It’s so easy to empty and is tardis-like in terms of capacity. Wish I had bought this earlier. Worth the money. Highly recommended.
Best bin I’ve ever owned. Filter works really well to block out any unwanted odours, draws run really well and are very easy to empty.
Love this bin! Everything organised under one lid. Have had so many compliments about it.
Only thing is you need to buy the Joseph Joseph bin liners to keep it looking tidy. Which is about 7 for 20.
I bought this to have my rubbish, compost and recycling neatly stored in one place. This unit does that and looks good at the same time.
This bin is brill. I didn’t relies how much stuff had to be put into different bins.
did you know that Derivatives of this product sell at about 50% of cost? I didn’t but it was still worth the price, fantastic value loads of optionsnand loads of opportunities
I like the bin it is very stylish which is good as I have to keep it in my dining area as kitchen too small for a waste bin my biggest issue with it is the food waste bin really needs a hinged lid as you have to take the lid of and put it somewhere while you are emptying the waste into it my other observation is that the handle to open the bin could have been built into the lid itself would have made it more streamlined but I do like the bin I love not have recycling stuff lying about the kitche
This bin is brilliant! Everything in one place easy to use and clean. So glad I chose this one.
This is a slim, excellent set up for a small household. The 20l bins means waste isn’t lying around in the kitchen for too long! Flexible set-up is helpful too.
Very good quality. The square bin seems to hold things better.
The product is well made and effective for rubbish and food waste. Very pleased with the purchase.
Well designed, sturdy, fits well in its space, definitely recommend
A neat compact bin. Large enough for several days waste. Looks good too.
This product is really worth the money if your family recycled their waste. It’s 60L storage capacity is great for a family of 3/4 and it’s so easy to empty and clean. I would highly recommend this bin.
Top section closes snugly, so definitely fly proof for the summer months to stop them getting in and laying eggs. Bottom section on wheels and not attached so does not seal. Will be a problem in the summer fly season.
2 bed maisonette here, separate kitchen with small seating space (cafe table size).
The unit itself comes in a huge box, wrapped in plastic, the bin inside padded with the worst kind of styrofoam, but they have to prevent carelessness when shipping I guess.
The top bin is meant for landfill and food recycling. It comes with a few ‘starter’ bags that fit perfectly – too perfectly if you ask me. There’s almost no extra length for the full-size bag, meaning if the bin is full, the bag will not close short of compressing it. So we use 50L drawstring bags from Asda or wherever else and they fit perfectly.
The recycling compartment (bottom), has slits in-situ so that you can use standard-size plastic carrier bags, which we do, to separate plastic/bottles/tins from paper/cardboard. This works nicely, and the whole orange units can be lifted out without any vacuum effect occurring. This is on wheels and doesn’t clip in to place, or anything like that, you literally just push it back in and it stays there. It stays perfectly in place, doesn’t roll or anything, though sometimes you may need to give it a tap to line everything up (if you’re OCD about appearances).
There are two downsides so far as we can tell, after a solid month of use:
1) The food recycling just isn’t large enough. Compared to the council-provided bin, it’s just too small for us (couple and young baby). Plus, as it sits inside the top compartment, it will mingle too closely with landfill that may be stinky or nasty (eg. nappies), for my liking, needing washing up frequently. If you use the bottom bin, then there’s far less space for recycling…
2) The rear literally looked like it was flush – in all the photos and marketing shots on their website, there was never a clear picture showing that the rear part sticked out. So it won’t sit flush against the wall, but this is minor.
Then of course the PRICE. My arse hurts, even at 125 that I paid, I’m still a bit sore.
It sadly hasn’t completely unified the recycling, but I still argue with my Mrs to use the included food unit. She cooks more though, so she’s the boss on that one.
Overall though, this is larger than I expected – even having measured it up – but it’s removed the need for bags and boxes and reduced the frequency with which we need to go downstairs to the communal bins and empty. So all in all, very happy with this and highly recommended [if you can get it at a good price].
60l Totem Joseph Joseph stainless steel bin. Fab bin but 30 cheaper in Lakeland. 139 in Lakeland I payed 170
Looks great and works well. Should have bought it years ago instead of having bottles, cans and paper rubbish all round my old bin.
This totem Joseph Joseph bin has a unique design, and it sure has garnered a lot of questions when people see it in the kitchen (about a bin, who knew?)
The sleek design makes it stand out, and it has two separate compartments; the top I use for waste, and the bottom for recycling. There is a separate detachable smaller holder which is good for food waste, which sits out on my counter.
It is easy to clean and simple to use. The only downsize is finding appropriate sized bags without having to buy the expensive official ones – although good old fashioned bin bags will work, they won’t get filled up depending on the size you buy. A small burden to bear.
I get ridiculously Excited when showing people this bun it works perfectly for me as a person alone who wants to recycle can’t recommend highly enough
This bin has been in use for a while now, but despite its size it doesn’t quite have enough separation storage, and the food caddy is in my experience far too small. Here in Devon we need to separate out glass, plastics, paper, card and food. It might work if it had dividers for the two main compartments (mine has none), but for a family of four, who make a real effort to buy products with unnecessary packaging, there’s just not the capacity to store easily the separated items. In an ideal situation, one could do with two of these bins, but we don’t have the room in the kitchen.
So, we use it to store landfill in the top, and compacted cardboard in the lower section. Glass and plastics and stored outside in council boxes, and food is stored in compostable bags lining a bigger caddy, the small supplied caddy has been removed.
On a positive note, the bin looks, great and is very well made and finished and is mostly very easy to use … mostly, because the pop-up lid does not always released when the handle is pressed fully down; it’s as though the lid is just making a seal around the top of the bin, but it doesn’t do it always!
I don’t really write reviews, but due to the price (for a bin) I thought I should.
I bought this purely for recycling as I have to split the waste into 3 different collection bins – so rather than having paper and plastic ect on the table until i get chance to put it outside, it now goes straight into the Joseph recycle bin until it’s full – then take it out once a week. So this is perfect 🙂
However, I agree with some of the other comments. If you’re using it for general waste im not sure if it’s suitable, as the compartments are wide but fairly are shallow (for an everyday waste bin) and im sure if will fill up fast.
This is one of those products you never knew you needed until you have it. This is a generously sized unit with two bins fitted vertically in a frame – upon removing from the packaging it seems very big and bulky but, due to the vertical design, I managed to find a space for it in the kitchen which doesn’t have a lot of room for extra units. The top bin is used exclusively for recyclables (probably holds about 3 – 4 days worth in a 3 person household) and I use the bottom one for glass – saves having empty glass jars/bottles spread around the kitchen waiting to be taken out to the garage before taking for recycling. The small caddy I actually use for storing dog biscuits in – the large bag of biscuits is stored in another part of the house and it’s easier to fill the caddy from the bag and keep that in the kitchen.
So far the only downsides has been trying to remove the plastic bin from the main container in the bottom bin – when it is full I just can’t seem to be able to get a grip on it and I think this is because the glass makes it go slightly out of shape – when empty I can just take it out with no problems. Luckily though the bottom bin has wheels on it so it is fairly easy to wheel it out to the garage and empty. The other downside is when you press the lever to open the top bin lid it doesn’t always open first time so you have to press it again or nudge it up with your hand – this does seem to occur more when the bin is quite full.
This Joseph Joseph bin is very large measuring in at 36.6 x 39 x 81.4 cm and weighing 9.72kg. It has a 60 litres capacity, so large enough for an average family. My bin is stone coloured ,but the bin comes in a variety of colours and one should match your needs. The top of the bin has a separate 3Litre removable food waste caddy with lid, which I have found very useful. The bottom of the bin pulls out easily and can be used for recycling, or as I use it for glass bottles. The design of the bin is very modern and makes a good looking addition to any kitchen. I have given it 4* as my bin lid is temperamental and only opens occasionally when pressing the handle. There doesn’t seem to be anything stopping the handle from opening the bin, as I have checked this thoroughly, but this is frustrating hence the 4*. If you want a really good looking stylish bin, then this will fit your bill beautifully, so it’s 4* from me folks.
First off, this is a large bin – with the hinged top it meant that it would not fit under our work-surface and still remain accessible, but we rearranged and are really happy that we did.
The good thing about the size is that each compartment is large enough to keep a lot of waste in, we only have to empty it once a week and while it’s full you can’t tell at all. The scent absorber works really well and it looks really smart and modern where it sits.
The hinged top is very easy to use with a nice big handle and a gentle opening action which shuts quietly as well. The lower compartment is on casters and slides out silently and easily as well.
The inside of the compartments comes out completely making emptying really simple and re-fitting a bag easy as well.
We’re very impressed with this setup – it’s quite expensive, but you really get what you pay for in this case and I can recommend it for anyone who wants a modern, good looking bin with nice features.
As stated in the headline, this bin is amazingly easy on the eye, with its stylish lines and contrasting orange interior.
So, the unit has 2 large multi-use compartments with easy-to-remove & clean interiors (they even have little cut-outs near the base to stop filled bags getting stuck due to a vacuum forming!) removable+ repositionable lidded caddy for food waste.
The top section is lidded and has an integrated odour control filter (this needs to be replaced at 3-monthly intervals, 8 for a pack of two). There is one included. This is attached to a legged frame.
The bottom section has integrated casters underneath, to allow ease of sliding in and out from underneath the fixed, top section. This part does not have a lid. It also doesn’t line up particularly evenly, which I would expect given the price tag. A little wiggling into place can help, but I think the actual construction design limits how close the tolerances can be.
The food caddy has an integral clip, allowing you to fit it in the corner of whichever section you like, which is nice and very thoughtful design.
All section use custom-fit liners, which are purchasable from the JJ website, and I guess Amazon. They come in various sizes, but this bin includes three each of the IW6 + IW2 liners.
Overall, would I recommend this bin? Well, it all depends on how much money you have. As I said earlier, it looks very, very good. There are some extremely thoughtful aspects to it as well. However, if you use the recommended JJ liners, odour reducers etc. then it’s going to be an extremely expensive prospect to maintain. As their bags are somewhere in the region of 7-9 per 50, depending on size. I have no doubt, the bags are good quality – perfectly sized for the compartments, but I think after the first couple of tries, I’d be looking to find a cheaper alternative.
So, in summary. It’s a great bin – good looking and extremely practical, but expensive to run if you go with the OEM eco-system. If you find a super-market alternative, then it might be a lovely addition to your new kitchen. You probably won’t find a nicer looking bin!
I was quite apprehensive about this bin because its so expensive, but i love it.
My kitchen is very small, only 10ft x 6ft but this is tall and small so is a perfect size for my kitchen.
The bin is split into 2 x 30 litre compartments. The bottom one is on wheels and so slides in and out of the frame very easily. The top one is accessed via a lid, you press the silver part, and the lid comes up by itself. It raises slowly so no chance of hitting yourself on the lid.
Both compartments have orange plastic inner buckets that have spaces around the corners so you can lift them out easier. The bin comes with a small sample of black bin liners that fit both buckets, but you are only given 3 to try. If you want more the bags are IW6, and they cost 8 quid for 20. This is my only negative, they cost far more than i am prepared to pay for bin liners, so i bought a roll of 40 lemon scented ones from the pound shop which fit perfectly.
You also get a small compost corner that sits in the top corner of the upper bucket. It comes with a lid. You are given a sample of 3 bags. The replacements are IW2 and cost 8 quid for 50. They are quite thick and don’t leak.
You also have a carbon filter that you pop in the top for odour control. The replacements cost 8 quid for 2. I’ve no idea how long they last but the more frequent you empty the bin, the less odours it will soak up.
Both of the buckets are very easy to clean. They were clean with just fairy liquid and a sponge, because the outside is plastic, it is also extremely easy to keep clean with just some anti bacterial spray and a cloth.
The colour is classed as stone, but its a very light grey with orange buckets. It looks very smart.
Personally i love the bin, its smart and sleek, and the 10 year guarantee is a great reason to buy it, my only negative is the cost of the replacement bags and filters.
I was overwhelmed by the size of this bin when it arrived, but assumed most of it would be packaging. I was wrong! The bin is generously sized and quite stable and solid. It comes pre-built, so no building or fiddling around with fittings. The stone colour is more of a cream in colour, and whilst it is very smart, I worry that it may look like it was meant to be white. Colour, in the end is down to preference and kitchen design so each to their own.
I was impressed with the compartment sizes — they are suitable for a weeks waste for me and my partner. There is a nice neat area for the compostable waste too, which can be moved around to suit your preference. The drawers are smooth, fluid and easy to pull out, however, the handle on the bottom compartment is hindered by the inner orange bin, this could be trickier to maneuver and manage for those with larger fingers.
The height of the bin is suitable which prevents having to bend over all of the time. I prefer to have the recycling waste in the bottom drawer as it was easier for me to navigate and remove; with the general waste and compost in the top section, we were able to make more use of the filter in the lid — which kept the whole thing very fresh.
Included with the bin are a pack of trial bags and a filter to use, which is great to get you started. Whilst “normal” bin bags will suffice, they do not fit quite as well (surprise surprise) as the ones designed for them. The bin has marking inside should you forget which types of bags you will require; the suitable bags and filters are as follows:
* IW6 30-Litre General Waste Liners – Pack of 20 (Amazon product-code: B07PT7VL7Y).
* IW2 4-Litre Compostable Bags – Pack of 40 (Amazon product-code: B00UYAN0DA).
* Carbon Filter – Pack of 2 (Amazon product-code: B00UYAMYT6).
Depending how quickly you go through bags, the cost to maintain using this bin with genuine parts, could get quite costly.
All in all, it’s a great bin, as great as a bin can be — and if you’re looking to treat yourself to a stylish, good use of space bin — I would say it’s worth the money in the long run.
Living alone in a small flat, I fill one carrier bag of rubbish per week, so it’s been designed well in terms of size. The idea behind the smell blocker is good, though it’s not the best in reality – I still find myself having to empty the general rubbish the day after if there’s a strong food smell, particularly with things that went in on the Monday, and are still there on the Friday. The removable orange insert tubs are great, as particularly for the recycling, I normally just carry that down and empty it in to the communal recycling bins.
Having the stackers is great, as I am pushed for space and definitely generate more recycling than general waste. The official bags are expensive but I just use whatever fits. The lid doesn’t always close with ease but the slides of the lower bin work with ease. It’s not annoying in how it functions.
Overall, I think it’s pricey, what an extortionate amount of money for just a bin. It does look great and it does function like fluid in the way that only Joseph Joseph can, but still…it’s a bin. If you’re willing to spend this much, then it won’t fail you.
This is certainly the bin for you if you want an ergonomic, minimalistic style bin. It’s sleek and stylish and looks good in most kitchens. It’s not really suitable for a larger family, unless you want to be changing the bin liner each and every day. But, for a single person/couple/smaller family, it’s perfect- three compartments: one for main rubbish, another for food and the bottom is for recycling. The recycling section is quite roomy, which is great- I fill it up every day!
It’s easy to put together and fairly easy to clean. I don’t get any benefit from the filter though. Otherwise, highly recommended
I love this bin, it is compact and stylish and fits nicely in the kitchen. I like the integrated odour control and the recycling section at the bottom, which slides out easily for use. The lid for the actual rubbish bin is easy to open with one hand, which is good as there’s normally rubbish in the other hand. It’s a good design and really practical but VERY, VERY EXPENSIVE for a rubbish bin.
When I first reviewed the original version of this bin shortly after it’s debut a few years ago it was absolutely the best in market and unique in it’s type. Now, a few years on we have a new edition of the device and in my opinion, it’s better than ever.
First a bit of a recap on what made the original bin great, which applies to this one as well. There are two separate main compartments, with the ability to also add a food waste caddy and divide up the bottom one – so for most complicated recycling schemes you can do what you need to do in the kitchen rather than separate later. Both look pretty stylish, are sturdy in construction, have odour reduction build in and are generally easy to clean (more on this later). It was already a great premium bin option.
So what’s changed? Well on that cleaning front I mentioned, the change of materials to remove the stainless steel, making the button external and the entire bottom section come out have removed a number of the corners that previously used to be difficult to clean. The shape of the internal bins has changed slightly so they are easier to get in and out, also to secure a bag inside thanks to some well placed slits. Odour no longer builds up inside thanks to new ventilation and the mix between the two sections changed to allow for more recycling and use of standard plastic bags – though for an ideal fit you still need specific ones.
Overall, this update has made an already great bin even better. If you’re looking for a way to encourage recycling, streamline a dirty bin area or just make your waste disposal better, look no further – this is a great option.
This is a gorgeous addition to the kitchen of a smaller household, it’s just isn’t practical for larger families.
4.5 stars for this, rounded up to five .
First things first.
The capacity of 40 L is a total capacity for both bins. If you have a lot of recycling, you may find yourself making very regular trips to your large recycling bin with the small bin.
The bin features a small lidded caddy for food waste. Many authorities collect food waste separately, so this may well be useful for some people, to separate this particular kind of waste from others. It’s quite a small capacity.
If you find yourself wasting large quantities of food, this won’t be suitable.
Most of us now focus on keeping leftovers, or batch cooking to minimise waste, so this may not be quite an issue.
Something that may be an issue is finding suitable bags for the non-recyclable rubbish , the small 20 L capacity is too big for a pedal bin bag, and too small for a larger bag.
If you fit your large bin with a wheelie bin bag, then this won’t be such an issue. The bin can be simply emptied into it.
The study orange plastic bin liners, are very 70s, but easy to remove and refit. The bin itself has gorgeous wipe clean lines. The lift up lid operates with a gentle press.
This may be ideal for people who are downsizing, rather than those starting out, who may well need a larger bin as their household expands. It’s got a 10 year guarantee, and I can easily see it lasting this. It may possibly even see me out.
This is a great way to use vertical space to maximise your waste storage, without using much floor space.
The bottom crate rolls out on castors, while the top crate is fixed on a strong, wobble-free stand at about waist height.
Both crates have thick, strong plastic bins inside them which are very easy to lift out for cleaning or to empty the waste into your wheelie bin.
The capacity of each crate is very good, at around 30 litres each, so I squash all my recycling flat then pop it in the bottom crate and only need to empty it twice a week. The top crate which holds the food waste and non-recyclable items needs emptying about twice a week too, although it does vary depending on what we buy. Joseph Joseph do a range of special bin liners to fit the square shape of the crates, but a large capacity bin liner might fit too, although I haven’t tried it and it wouldn’t be a nice, neat fit.
The colour of my Totem Max is stone, which is a grey but a warm grey, not a blue grey. It goes well with the gloss white units in my kitchen, but if you had a kitchen with yellow tones, I think it would clash. The crates are metal and very nice quality as you would expect from JJ. This unit should do many years of service in my house as it is built to last.
5 stars.
This is pretty fantastic in my book. I was forever piling either cardboard behind the usual bin or at the side of the sink with the empty cans, bottles and bits of foil waiting for me to make that trek outside to the recycle bin when enough had built up to make the journey worthwhile. On top of that I (well we), would put peelings and food waste in a small container — again next to the sink and even with its sealed lid after a while the contents used to start to pong, especially when you are stuffing it full so the lid wouldn’t shut just trying to avoid that trip.
Well this is great. It’s made up of two 20 ltr square plastic containers with a smaller lidded one that can be attached to the inside of one of them. Both sit inside larger metal containers (bins?). The top container has a hinged lid similar to a regular bin while the lower container slots in beneath and is on wheels. I would say the top one is geared more towards waste that has a tendency to pong mainly due to the hinged lid and also the fact that the lid has a filter on it to help stop bad odours. The smaller one fits inside this one and has its own separate lid, the design of this one is quite nifty as if you put a bag inside it the handle can be used to thread a portion of the bag through to make the bio degradable poly bag taught around the rim.
The lower bin on its wheels fits easily and neatly below the upper bin into the “docking area”. The fact that it is on its own wheels is super useful as you can wheel it to a particular area where you are working and just drop your waste straight in rather than going back and forth.
The belting dark grey finish which really works well with the bright orange bins makes it something to look at, it is really nicely finished. The orange bins by the way can be removed for emptying/cleaning. It fits right next to our regular bin for regular unrecyclable waste. At the moment we are using the bottom bin for cardboard/paper and the top bin for metal/plastic/glass and the smaller container for food waste. It might be a pricey unit but it saves floor space when compared to others that sit containers side by side. Either way It seems to be working brilliantly at the moment and no more cluttered worktops.
This is by far the best kitchen bin I have ever owned. They have literally designed this to do be the swiss-army knife of bins.
First of all the design is incredible, the separated two bin compartments that interlock into each other. The bottom bin also has wheels at the bottom to allow it to easily slide out of the base. The top part of the bin has a press to open mechanism that allows you to easily open the bin with your elbow if you hands are full. The top part of the bin also has a small air vent which they provide an odour reducing filter that so far seems to work very well. Along with the air filter, they have also provided you with a set of bin bags, so you are ready to go from the get go.
The bin can also be used in multiple ways as there is incredible attachments allowing you to separate food waste, recycling and general waste. I also found that both bins have an orange inner base that can be removed (please see photo) which allows for easy removal to your made council bin. Also these inner bases can be removed and the bin can be used a full length 40 litre bin because they have made a hole between the two bins that is covered by these two inner bases.
I honestly cannot think of a single fault!
VERY impressed 5/5 ^__^
Having seen the usual selliing price for this waste separation unit, I was a little unsure what to expect when it arrived. Putting the price aside, I have to say that this is such a fantastic device. My expectations were that it was just going to be 2 plastic boxes inside a storage unit, however it is far, far more than this.
The whole unit has been designed with such care that every little aspect of it shows the true value of it. The lid is soft-opening, revealing the top unit inside, with its separate (removable) food waste container. The materials used are top quality and no expense has been spared in the manufacturing process. My favourite aspect is the roller system that the bottom section appears to be on. My son summed it up when he opened it for the first time; “coooool!”. It glides open like it is on tracks (no wobbly wheels here) and glides back in with perfect precision. It even looks like it is floating in mid-air when it detaches from the main unit.
The bags may seem a little expensive for it (you can use it with/without for dry waste). I have found no issues with using bags from my local supermarket, which fit fine if used in a similar way to how it shows in the description.
The Joseph Joseph rubbish and recycling bin is very functional.
It looks great – very minimalistic, it sparks joy! It also saves space. Previously we had large 75L waste bin (that was way too big) + couple containers for recycling: one large one for tins and jars, smaller one for batteries and medical recycling and a bag for cardboards. Now everything fits within the unit, which is amazing.
The top comes with odour filter, therefore the top is for waste, while the bottom part is for recycling. The small caddy can be placed both in the top or bottom bin. I think it is meant for the food waste but as our council does not collect this type of waste separately yet and I needed something for batteries and inhalers, I placed it in the bottom part. I’m really pleased with this bin, it is perfect from the esthetic point of view.
Have in mind that the opening of the top bin can be a bit tricky and may take a while to figure it out. It turns out our bin opens much easier when I elbow the handle than when I try to open it with my hand, which is not really that bad. I usually have dirty or wet hands in the kitchen and use my elbow to open the bin anyway, and the Joseph Joseph Totem Max has a perfect hight for this.
The only annoyance is that I haven’t found yet any standard 30L rubbish bags that would fit as nicely as the Joseph Joseph bags. Couple of them is provided for the bin but if you want to get more, a pack of 20 bags costs at the moment 8 which is way more than I would like to pay for bin bags.
