I’m sure the interface works I haven’t tried it . I’m currently installing everything but it would be a better route to go with the 192-14 because it is powered and takes some workload off your computer. Also it’s advertised it comes with a few plugins. These plugins require a activation code that you have to buy separately. Most of them are protools stock plugins so if you run Protools you’re good.

While I’ve only had this for 2 days now, I must say that after days of agonizing research with dozens of video reviews I’m quite pleased. It suits my needs exactly.

My main usage requirement was something that could handle 2 instruments, mic, and midi keys running to my DAW recording to separate tracks.

This is my first Audio interface, and sound quality is very good compared to the previous ways I recorded audio to my PC (a lot of individual USB inputs)

While less important, I also wanted something that didn’t clutter my workspace and this is amazing for that reason. I can leave the types of things I’ll rarely unplug like mics, monitors and Midi plugged in through the back and just plug in guitar/bass or whatever as needed in the front. Perfect.

Couldn’t be happier with my decision really.

    My Specs:
    * M-Audio AIR 192|8
    * System: 2012 Macbook Pro
    * DAW: GarageBand & LogicX
    * MIDI: Yamaha S08 Keyboard
    * Various Guitars
    * MIC: AKG Pro Audio P220 Condense

Moved from a Focusrite Scarlett Solo to this puppy and I absolutely love it. The separate gain knobs for headphones and speakers is especially nice. The preamps do a great job of making sure my vocal signals are plenty loud. Definitely recommend this buy for a quality interface under $200.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersUsers with poor reviews seem to be suffering from user error. My model worked perfectly fresh out of the box. Just as well, I decided to update the drivers. The drivers clearly state your PC must be restarted to work and be active. There are currently (as of 4/26/2022) no drivers specifically for Windows 11, however, the Windows 10 (64-bit) drivers worked perfectly for me. Zero knob wobble, tight and smooth knobs. Smooth switch for phantom power. Tight connectors with zero wobble.

The drivers actually enabled 32-bit, which is incredible for specific audio needs to avoid losing data. My PC is a Ryzen 5 5600x, so Ryzen systems are, in fact, perfectly fine. I have Windows 11 Pro, and the Windows 10 Drivers are excellent and hassle free. The software subscriptions are all optional via their website, so you do not receive ANY bloatware or unwanted apps. There are 2 included USB cables; 1 usb-c to usb-c and 1 usb-c to usb-a. I am using a different branded usb-c cable rated for 100W, so the claim that a “usb 3.1” cable will not work is false. The audio quality of 32-bit 192,000 Hz is phenomenal.

I purchased this unit, marked as “USED” from Amazon Warehouse. The item came re-packaged in a general brown cardboard box, with all items sandwiched between two styrofoam blocks. All items were included, and the item is apparently brand new (cellophane still in tact on face). I am ecstatic to have purchased this item for $72.64 instead of the full $119.00; what an absolute bargain. Would recommend for an initial audio interface; I wanted a MOTU M2, but this was nearly 1/3 the cost.

    Setup:
AMD Ryzen 7 4800, Windfows 11. Fully working and making short work of anything I throw at it.
Saw on other reviews it didn’t work with Ryzen or AMD, might be a configuration, drivers or setup thing, it does work.
Tried with Cockos reaper 6 and protools, with AIR, Spitfire Audio, Kontakt, iZotope, mostly other software used and no issues whatsoever with none of the ones I’ve been using since W7. Will work with ASIO and provide great control of the usual windows audio specs, can be used as mixer/monitor for other non-pro-audio needs. say you have OBS and/or VLC and want to use each input for a different purpose, and eachone of the output L or R for different purposes, because broadcasting or whatever, this will support it.

Also excellent for line in instruments or th rough amps and stomp boxes and then line in. Can also switch from line to play through receiver on usb or record on pc. Best sound quality i have gotten from any sound card. My 10 in 10 out m audio was great but the octopus thet came out the back was a nightmare. best combination of great priced great quality externnal sound card. Great unit. Phantom Power is top notch. Jacks and controls are of quality materials and easily understood and accessible. This interface sounds awesome. Only drawback is the LED meters, which I wish were more extensive….blah blah blah….for around $100 what more can be expected! THE HUGE VOLUME KNOB makes this unit a pure win.

    updated review:
After working with M-Audio support, I was given an RMA to return the faulty interface, they didn’t just replace the interface but they actually sent me an entire new vocal studio pack even though I only sent in the faulty part. Replaced unit is working great so far.

    old review:
Things were ok for the first things months although after about a month, you had to have the mic gain to the max to get any sound from the mic – and yes with phantom power on. Then suddenly the Windows machine no longer sees the usb device, and the power light on the M-Audio AIR doesn’t come on … but phantom power does. Tried another port and another cable and it seems to have a failed usb and is just passing through power.

After using the PC Sound card for maybe a month it’s night and day listening to my monitors on a proper interface. The hum is gone and guitar mixes have really come to life.

Not really impressed with the software bundled which includes lite editions of everything meaning pay more for the full version.

This interface enabled me to jump into DAW recording quite easily. It has more features than the comparable Focusrite and for less money. Number one perk is the USB/Direct dial. If you have any latency while monitoring, you can dial it back to Direct and still get your vst’s mixed in; although I’ve had zero latency problems with this unit. Other cool feature is the big knob to adjust your output monitoring through a PA or other device (stereo right and left separate 1/4 inch). I also love that it has LED lights showing your gain levels. Phantom power works perfectly, as does the other inputs for Guitar or mics (1/4 inch) that don’t use phantom power. XLR mic input on the back is great. It has a USB type C connector too, so fastest connection to your computer, also reducing latency. I’d give it another star except that I’ve emailed support twice to get an RMA on one that I bought and they never responded. I honestly think my son may have dropped it as opposed to it having any issues, however.

Ok. So, I’ve had mine for about 2 weeks now. I have mixed feelings about it. But it’s a good, cheap starter overall. I’ll just list what I’ve noticed.

It made pro tools run very slowly on my laptop. There’s no other way to phrase that. This device, specifically, made pro tools run slow as hell. I can unplug it and just use my laptops audio card and pro tools runs perfect. With this plugged in it goes slow. Idk why and that’s the main reason I can’t give it 5 stars. I have an hp omen w 32 gigs of ram. I can play most video games w pretty high settings with no issues. Pro tools had never been an issue before. But after buying the air 192 / 4, pro tools became very slow.

It works perfectly with FL studio. I have to open FL first and then I can open a browser and find samples without having to go back and close FL studio. So, if you’re a splice user, you’d probably love this. I’m sure any other daw (other than pro tools) would work just as well.

The hardware is solid. No problems there.

The preamps are cool. No complaints. Nothing amazing but they don’t suck.

Over all, I’d get it for production, but not for recording or mixing tbh. I don’t regret buying it. It’s a good cheap option.

Hier muss M-Audio nachbessern.
Ich gebe das Interface zurck. Schade.

Adoro questa interfaccia audio. Tanti ingressi, tutti limpidi. Facile gestione in/out.

    Tutto in uno

It’s a great product with good preamps. Have no problem with unnecessary noise at high gains. My biggest problem is it’s always stuck in stereo 2-channel. So if I’m using something like Nvidia Shadowplay to record gameplay from something, my microphone will always be on the left side since it’s always in stereo. Also, sometimes the sample rate will change depending on the app, such as my DAW, and it won’t revert back unless I replug it. Dials are very nice however, and having actual meters for dB and clipping instead of the light on the Scarlet made me go with this one. So just a couple of annoyances, but nothing deal breaking.

  47. Anonymous says:

Does what it’s supposed to. Pretty much impossible to find something with this many outgoing IO connections at this price range. I’ve been recording at the 96k resolution and at maximum realtime sample block size and it works great still. Sometimes it sort of decides that it’s going to revert to 44.1k and it kind of locks up and won’t let you change it back but if you just close down your DAW or change the output from Windows to something like the internal speaker and then back again it usually resolves the issue.

It doesn’t have midi inputs and outputs though, so that’s something you might want to consider.

I really like this interface, but it seems to have some issues with Windows compared to MacOS. Initially I had this hooked up to my speakers that were part of my mac set up. It was quite literally plug and play. Whole system showed up immediately and worked great. Then I made the decision to move it and my speakers to my gaming setup, because I don’t always like to use headphones. It was not plug and play like MacOS at all. Windows recognized the device. Would not output any sound. Made sure drivers were correct and downloaded the interface software. After watching some YouTube videos turns out the frequency needs to be changed and its needs to match windows settings. Started working. Thought we were all good. Nope, not really. Any time Windows updates it messes everything up. That’s not really the products fault per say, more of a Windows issue, but you shouldn’t have to be messing around with settings to get it to work. I really like the product itself, just seems to be kind of flawed and it’s disappointing

I love the sleek black style, only downside is the mic level LEDs having a big jump (-20, -6, -2), would’ve been nice to have a tighter measure, but I use a DAW to manage my levels so not the end of the world! Just something that crossed my mind

Sonst gibt’s da Probleme undzwar so richtige!

My first audio interface and have to say I love it. The large dial at the front is great. It also powers my 80ohm DT 770.
It is larger than most audio interfaces so maybe not ideal for someone who needs it for travelling.

    Awesome interface

Einige andere Anbieter bieten zumindest weitere Einstell Optionen an (z.B. Kompressor/Limiter /EQ Features)
Anmerkung fr Einsatz bei folgender Software:
Voicemeeter: ASIO funktioniert nicht ! -> Es soll in VM gepatcht werden (stand Februar2021)
Der Einsatz von VM mit “Standard” Betrieb funktioniert tadellos.
OBS: ASIO Frequenz max. 48Khz einstellen sonst funktioniert Wiedergabe/Mikro nicht. Alternativ ASIO Plugin verwenden ( google Asio obs)
Discord: ASIO Frequenz max.
LED`s gut sichtbar
Haptik: Knpfe fhlen sich gut an, Reagieren sauber. Gehuse aus Metall, passt alles.
    Inhalt: Kurze Anleitung, Download Hinweise
Betrieb: USB-C ( Kein Separater Netzbetrieb), luft bei mir ber ein USB-C Hub mit Netzteil.
    1 Stern Abzug fr:
    Mittelmiger Treiber

I love this thing! The sound quality is lights out. Phenomenal! I’m a music teacher and typical use my interface to record guitar, bass, vocals and sometimes my electronic drum kit.
I downloaded the free Abelton software that came with the purchase of this unit and haven’t had any latency issues.
With my past interface, my recorded sounds always sounded dull. My guitar solos came in kind of buried. Since switching to this M-Audio interface I can’t believe the upgrade in my sound.
This is really built rugged. It’s not too big but it’s got a little weight to it. Metal housing and the faceplate looks like glass. The volume wheel is large and it turns and feels like a professional-grade unit.
I probably would have paid triple for this unit considering the sound I’m getting. Very impressive.

The drivers were updated as of 4/8/21, and I haven’t had any problems since! This took much longer than it should have, but at least it happened.

    Original review:

When this interface worked, it was great. A little larger than I expected, but that’s on me for not checking the dimensions.

Then I upgraded my system to a Ryzen 3600. Unfortunately, this caused issues with the interface that only appeared months after I upgraded where both inputs started intermittently going out. Now, input has totally stopped working and output crackles and pops frequently, especially when I’m working in my DAW. This has made it nearly impossible for me to work on any projects.

When I contacted support on Feb 24, 2021, I got the following message:

“we have received reports of customer’s having issues with AMD processors and that the development team is working to resolve the issue. We will have an update for AIR interface users with computers running an AMD processor very shortly. Thank you for your patience while we attempt to resolve this issue.”

I asked for a more specific time when the update might be available, and I was told it is “a high priority situation for the M-audio team.” Hopefully this is fixed soon, but considering there is a review from June 2020 reporting the same problem, I doubt it will be. In the meantime, avoid if you have an AMD processor.

I’ve been mostly happy with this purchase. I had a fringe use case for this device with using it for a VFIO setup. I know libvirt can make things that function fine in Windows all screwy when in a VM so I went in knowing it might be an issue but ultimately have had it working pretty soundly for about a week. If I run into any other issues I’ll update review.

    Pros:
    – Great price for a USB DAC with nice built in preamps and XLR out.
    – I like the design of it. The knobs are not crammed on the front so if you have the room on your desk it’s a nice layout.
    – The preamps specifically are nice because I have a Shure SM7B and wanted to avoid adding on an extra preamp if possible and this DAC boosts enough to not require an additional preamp. It seems like you can run most dynamic mics raw with this mixer and get appropriate levels barring the quietest of whispering.

    Cons:
    – Drivers suck. It’s been said before in other revuews but holy hell the M-Audio drivers that Windows pushes are terrible. I was getting crackling audio from my speakers and my mic was disconnecting every few minutes when I was using this mixer in my VM. Tried a whole bunch of fixes between switching ports, changing sound virtualization, and fiddling with sample rate and buffer size. Finally figuered I’d just try reinstalling the drivers which I didn’t expect to be the problem given the mixer worked fine in baremetal windows. With no drivers installed the mixer worked flawlessly. I don’t even.
    – The control panel is threadbare and the GUI looks half functional between all the options grey-out for any given reason. It’s a glorified hotlink to visit their tech support site.
    – Pre-packaged software and demos is 100% wasted on me. Could be some really good offers for Protools in there but my eyes glaze over when I see this stuff as I just assume it to be demos looking to push a purchase on you. I bought this mixer because I needed a mixer, not because its Protools certified and comes with a trial version of an extra plugin to make farts sound wetter.

Overall, the hardware itself is nice and navigating the quirks can give you a nice mixer. It’s just navigating the quirks that can turn owners into refunders.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI compared this to the Scarlett Solo and this has much better features. Along with everything the SOLO has, you also get, a) dedicated mixing dial to control whether you are monitoring from your daw, direct from your recording source, or any blend of the two. b) Independent volume control for headphones, not affected by the main monitor volume control. I use these two extra features constantly, and would miss them a great deal with the other product. I also find, personally, that having all the controls on top makes everything super easy to adjust, and positions clearly visible after adjustments are made. An extra large monitor knob makes very fine adjustments of monitor volume effortless. The solo is probably a good device, and I almost picked it just because everyone else does. I am SO glad I got the M-Audio with the design and features being much better in my opinion.

I use it solely for recording spoken words: online meetings and screencasts for my online classes. It is connected to a Windows 10 PC and has been working flawlessly. The driver is stable during long online Zoom meetings (longer than 1.5 hours).

I used EVO 4 and returned it due to the RF interference with a cell phone and low mic output gain level. M-Audio Air 192|4 is excellent in these two regards. I find that it does not have the RF interference issue and that the maximum gain is higher than EVO 4. At the maximum level, I can clip the recording with Rode Podmic at my normal voice level, which was impossible with EVO 4. (I have a low-pitched voice and speak rather softly.)

The gain level is currently at about 9. The peak level during the recording is between -18 and -12 dB. I was about to buy Fethead when using EVO 4, but I don’t need one with M-Audio. The noise level is so low, and it is a non-issue, even at a high gain level.

The dial layout is excellent, and the dials themselves are of high quality. (Since I do not use studio monitors, I wish I can use the main dial (the biggest one in the middle) to control headphone volume. )

All in all, an excellent audio interface, especially if you use low sensitivity dynamic mics!

    Excellent, especially for dynamic mics

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSpace it takes up:
I was hesitant to purchase this interface due to the size. Many YouTubers said it was bulky and took up a lot of space. This may be true when comparing it to Focusrite Scarlets or other interfaces but as my first interface, I can’t imagine it being any smaller. It fits perfectly on my desk and doesn’t take up much space.

    Build quality:
This interface is light weight but feels very solid. The knobs are this very nice quality plastic but have resistance you would find on a professional mixer. The main frame of it is metal. The only cheap feeling thing is the large knob used to control it’s output for studio monitors.

    Ease of use and features:
This device offers you a ton of control in terms of it’s monitoring. You can adjust the headphone volume as well as balancing the audio from your computer or the direct monitoring from the interface. The headphone amp is powerful enough to drive my ATH M50Xs. I’m not sure how it works with higher ohm headphones. You can have a guitar/bass plugged in along with an xlr mic or something that uses line input. The Air driver you can get once you register it on the M-Audio website works excellent for FL Studio and other DAWs I’m sure.

    Overall:
This interface has a great feel and works as advertised. I have no complaints about it. The headphone amp paired with lower ohm headphones and lossless audio quality music can make for a good HiFi audiophile experience. Also, I found the serial number for my product on one of the user manuals in the box rather than on the box. You’ll need that to get the plugins and driver.

Excellent interface that will last you years

I like everything about this. I had a minor issue with the audio box at first. When i would download the necessary driver, it would completely stop working> Dont ask me what in the world i did, but after an hour or so – it magically started working – and perfectly. Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersEmpezar diciendo que tuve por aos la focusrite 2i2 de 1ra generacin, actualic a la Focusrite solo 3ra generacin, luego me ped la M-Audio 192|4 y en cuanto me lleg est la M-Audio 192|4 automticamente devolv la Focusrite y me qued con la M Audio y ahora paso a decir porque…

The latency on this is so low I love it, the quality of my recordings sound super crisp too.

But the tech support is non existent?

I have tried to email 2 times asking a support question. I have gotten a confirmation reply email saying that my question has been received, but I have never been emailed back with an answer to my question?

I tried calling them probably over 30 times over the course of 3 weeks and I was on hold indefinitely each time waiting for tech support to pick up the line.

I thought, maybe theres a problem with my phone or data service? My girlfriend noticed my frustration with being unable to contact M-AUDIO and she called them herself all the way from a different state. And SHE TOO was unable to speak with any tech support at M-AUDIO and was on hold indefinitely.

I am pleased with the quality of this pre-amp and I absolutely love the usb-direct mix knob for live recording but to M-AUDIO I ask one thing: Does anybody work at your tech support headquarters? Anybody??

When I first opened the box I was amazed, the way it was organized felt very premium to me. For 200 bucks, wow. The microphones quality is very clear, the interface’s buttons feel very nice and quality, and I haven’t had any complaints about the headphones yet. They just seem like some basic studio headphones that get the job done. If you are on a budget but need this set of 3 items, get it. It is worth it.
Now, the reason for the four stars is because it was kind of difficult to get it all working and set up with Windows and my DAW. I’m not sure if that was just me not knowing how to do things properly or if M-Audio could be to blame but it is worth mentioning. Anyways, like I said, if you need gear and are on a budget this is a great choice.

It is very heavy duty. But I thought the plastic layering was a removable protective covering and ended up picking at a corner a little but, also a few air bubbles.

So far no problems recording music. I was using a behringer um 22 and it could ONLY record in 44.1 kHz which I didn’t care about or understand a thing about until I saw this. The ability to record at 192 kHz sounds AMAZING. That’s a pro quality in some cheap hardware.

Most people wont go up to 192 kHz sample rate recording though due to it being more intensive on computer.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersUpgraded from a Scarlete 2i2 after the usb C port broke on me. This thing is amazing!! Very well built. Plenty of inputs. Sinple readouts for clipping and finding the right balance. Love the power switch to turn it off when not in use. 2 stereo lines in. 4 phantom power channels. 2 i said 2 HEADPHONE outs! Thats a game changer!! The dedicated guitar inputs are awesome. The 3.5mm midi works great. Overall for the price I think its The best on the market for what you get. The preamps are strong but dont hiss if you find the balance with your mic. All mics are different. If i had anything i wish was added itd be a built in di box for the guitar channels. But overall very very very impressed. Had this 2 months now for a live set up and its great.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI used to use an M-Audio Profire 610 from ~2009 and it still works to this day. However, in that time I have transitioned from a mac user to a Windows user, and having only firewire connectivity is limiting for me. Since my Profire has served me so well for so long, I wanted to stick with M-Audio instead of jumping on tp similar Focusrite products. Some of the reviews here were a tad limited or negative from my perspective as a potential customer, but I still thought it was worth a try to see how M-Audio’s quality has stood the test of time.

So right off the bat, I was all excited to start using it and in a rush I downloaded the 192 | 4 driver instead of the 192 | 14 driver like a dumb muppet, and was wondering why the app said no hardware was connected. After I got that sorted, everything else integrated smoothly.

I like how the headphone outputs can drive my 300 ohm Sennheiser HD 800s with ease. If you turn the knob to 3 o’clock, it’s loud enough that you’ll feel your hair follicles vibrating. The mic quality and latency is sublime with my MXL 990 condenser. While the VU meters do work well indicating the volume levels of my turntable, I found that they are not very helpful when plugging in my mic. It’s better to rely on your DAW in this case. I am very happy with the guitar inputs and really enjoyed noodling around with Guitar Rig and experimenting with different audio formats and sample rates.

I suppose that thing that stood out to me about this device is how much it can do. I can route my vinyl to it, use a mic, have my monitors bumping, plug in two sets of headphones, jam along with my guitar, poke notes on my midi keyboard with my nose, all while listening for any notifications that may come through on my computer. I like that.

One thing I miss that the Profire 610 had was a more robust computer interface. I could name my tracks for inputs and outputs, and I could control it on my computer. However, that device only had two gain knobs, two headphone audio knobs, and a master knob. I suppose it’s nice to have a more physical interface and it takes me back to my guitar pedal collector days.

As far as build and feel go, I am pretty happy. It looks very appealing and the metal chassis seems indestructible. My two slight complaints would be that I wish the main volume potentiometer had a little more resistance when I am turning it. It is super smooth. Also, the right side where the power goes in can get quite hot. I found that at a 192000 kHz sample rate it was much hotter than at 44.1 kHz and it kinda worried me about the longevity of the device if I were to be always running it that hot.

When it comes to using it as a media device, I have been using it in conjunction with Voicemeeter Banana and Light Host. This allows me to have a lot of control over the inputs and outputs and I can also patch in VSTs if desired.

All in all, I suppose my needs are a little odd, but this does the job at a reasonable price. Hopefully, this M-Audio interface will last me 11+ years as well.

    Everything I wanted

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersRelative to my experience level, this interface is probably overkill for me; but at just $100 more than the version that meets my needs, I thought it made sense to plan for the future. So far, I am not disappointed. The quality of the audio is as good as I have ever heard. I am getting no discernible latency on my well equipped XPS laptop and I was up and running with the provided version of ProTools First in my first session, laying down three short tracks and mixing them as needed for a very pleasing result. I will say, I am not wild about ProTools and will likely try some other DAWS. The setup in the ProTools First that is included does not match what’s in the tutorials with respect to what are supposed to be “included” plug-ins. In fact many items are missing and sorting through the available downloads and figuring out how best to augment my setup is just terrible on the AVID site. It’s like they were striving to be obtuse. But don’t let that stop you from buying the interface. I was able to get up and running with Studio One just as quickly and navigating their library of included and paid plus-ins is decidedly more intuitive.

The software may be ok, I don’t know as I bought a new MacBook pro for testing and most of the included software does not support Catalina (the current version of the mac operating system). Also keep in mind that these are all lite versions comparable to bloatware on a new pc. The companies are trying to sell you the pro versions.

Golden Review Award: 36 From Our UsersI’ve just received my m-audio air 192/4 and it’s exactly what I was looking for. I previously had a focusrite solo which was an “upgrade” from my m-track plus and while the focusrite worked as intended I was not so pleased with the direct monitoring that it offered. I loved my m-track plus because I was able to hear myself with the direct monitoring capabilities. Being able to switch between my computer and myself made making recordings and general communication so much more cemented in the moment. The focusrite didn’t really provide that for me. But this m-audio air interface brings me back and I’m very happy with it and glad I’ve upgraded from the focusrite. M-audio has been good to me. I will revise this review once I have more time with it. If it doesn’t break within a year, it will definitely be getting 5 stars.
