Hi. About to replace trellis on battens against an old block wall to give more height and privacy. Always buy makita but never had an sds drill before. I used m10 – 100mm screw bolts. It’s a long wall requiring 96 10mm holes to be drilled. I marked everything up and that took nearly 3 hours. Drilling 96-10x105mm holes took just shy of an hour. No fuss, no hassle, no problem at all and most important of all it really was easy, no huffing and puffing the drill did it all. Using a good quality 10mm sds bit the drill really did sail through the job. “Word of cation here for those not used to this type of drill. I used a 200mm drill bit and the block wall is 150mm thick. Twice I went through to the other side without knowing. Use the depth gauge!” Two days later, job done and ( if I say so myself) looking pretty dammed good. A powerful easy to use and very capable drill also comes with a good fitted case. I don’t think this’ll be lying idle for long.

Had a makita for years but after a hard life i decided to retire the old one. This newer model does the business – When drill or breaking concrete or bricks it is first class and in the price range i do not think it can be matched

Haven’t put this through too much use or abuse yet but it seems a solid tool. Much more punch than a non-SDS drill of course and just required for certain substances.

3 mode, quick adjust handle and plenty of power for most jobs.

Made in Romania. Feels solid and of typical Makita quality. I expect it will last a long time.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have always used traditional drills with hammer actions to drive holes in brickwork and other substances. I bought this as I needed to put up numerous boards on brickwork and concrete and really could not be doing with the usual hassle with a traditional drill. OMG!!! Why did I not buy one of these before? Where I was previously taking forever with loads of frustration to drill holes in bricks, breeze blocks and concrete, this little baby does it in significantly less time and with ease. You can also set up the depth you want it to drill to. I also bought the Makita drill bits for the machine and they are well worth it. Now I look forward to putting stuff up rather than putting it off endlessly because it is now a pleasure rather than a chore!

Cuts through concrete like a knife through butter! Saves time and a lot of back ache! Worth the money spent. Only bought it this month so will update the review in a few moneths time. So far so good. Just remember that if using the chisel function you will need to dip the sds plus bit head in grease to maintain the chuck. Dont use cheap grease as I’ve read that the grease can eat up the chuck’s rubber rendering it useless. Ive just played safe and gone for Makitas own sds grease but i see that castrol is equally good.

As a degenerate DIYer I had reservations buying this for a hearth and beam replacement job, but it turned out OK in the end aside from the fact it’s so powerful on hammer mode I nearly ended up in my neighbour’s living room.

Really good drill – very good quality at a good price. Has a lovely weight and feel to it and a nice long power cord. Bought to replace a DeWalt that had worn out after a few years and the repair guy recommended the Makita. You need to be aware that it is an SDS drill which means it takes SDS bits (which have grooves in the sides). If you want to use this with normal bits you need a chuck adapter- there are loads on Amazon for not much money. But SDS bits are far better if you are drilling into masonry or heavy timber as they don’t slip in the chuck. I have a small rechargable drill for lightweight work and use one this for the bigger jobs.

I bought this drill for concrete wall in my new house to hang photo frames, clocks, wall shelfs etc.It doesn’t work with standard drill bits.Later I realised and bought Makita D-03888 5 Piece Standard Sds-Plus Drill Bits (recommended by amazon frequently bought together) which drilled quicker and easier in concrete wall.Best DIY hammer drill ever !!!.

Have to say this is a well built piece of kit.
I bought it as a replacement drill as a “do it all” unit.
One thing I did not know about SDS drills is the chuck is a different design so traditional drill bits don’t fit.
After contacting Makita they informed me I could buy an adapter chuck, however the do not recommend them as they can lead to the machine overheating.
Marked down one star as the information/description does not highlight this.

This is my first and best sds drill, very powerful and very easy to drill into bricks and even in concrete(where a cordless will not cope at all) in seconds.

I found this to be extremely versatile, great for removing wall tiles quickly, drilling into brick effortlessly, fitting curtain rails to concrete lintels, removing bricks with the brick removal chisel without damaging the bricks, etc. If you are renovating a house, and you are a professional builder or diyer, this tool is invaluable and properly lubricated should last a long time.

I bought this as a cheap SDS drill and it seems to work quite well. I especially like the integrated auxiliary handle which is easy to adjust. And you can control its tightness which seems useful as a safety feature if you’re getting kickback.

The main weakness seems to be the instructions. The exterior packaging doesn’t even mention SDS and the written instructions are too generic, describing a variety of models in a confusing way. To really understand the drill, it’s best to go online where there are some good YouTube videos which explain and demonstrate it.

There aren’t any accessories but I wasn’t expecting any. I already had some huge bits for the specific job in mind and will get more as needed.

Fantastic drii. Effortless going through brickwork. I cut the four inch hole for my vent on bathroom fan. Took about ten minutes. Used drill bit making a series of holes in circular fashion.

So very glad I decided to buy this drill, I wish I’d have bought it years ago. The power it has is remarkable, it makes holes in brick as though there’s nothing there.
    100% happy so fa

Bought this drill as my old hammer drill was just not capable of tackling the hard walls in our house. Used this the first time and it drilled through the wall like a hot knife through butter. Makita certainly know what they are doing.

Solid and effective. Bought this as I live in a place with concrete walls and ceiling and making holes is a challenge. I’ve a perfectly respectable standard hammer drill with regular masonry drill bits, but have found it difficult to get it to work. This Makita SDS drill is a big contrast – it manages to chew through the concrete without difficulty. Just remember that you need to buy SDS drill bits to fit.

    Recommended.

This SDS drill makes drilling holes in masonry fast and easy compared to a non-SDS drill. The chiselling is very good too.

Only used this for chiselling hard mortar from paving so far, but it’s performed really well. It is a substantial item and does get warm when using on hammer setting, but it just keeps going. Paired up with the Heller SDS+ Plus 6mm Brick Mortar Rake Joint Chisel/Breaker, it sliced through the mortar and saved me days of hand work and the wear and tear on my joints!

Bought this after my old drill dies when cutting a hole through my garage wall. Fitted a bike rack in my garage, had to drill into concrete lintels, amazing, took seconds, like a knife through butter. But it, good value for money, great product.

Even though Makita states this will only drill up to 80mm holes with a diamond drill bit it did a 100mm hole with ease.. as well as taking back my plastered walls to brick.. for the price point it’s a great drill..

What can I say other than wow what a drill. My father let me use his 110v version of this and this 240v doesn’t disappoint either. With the right good quality drill bits this sinks into hard stone like a hot poker through butter. Very effortlessly does what it should and by far one of the best drills I’ve owned as a DIY person.

Not allot that can be said about the Makita brand that isn’t already widely known amount both the Professional and DIY users. I have employed this SDS drill to chase out old concrete on a Granite wall to make it ready for pointing, removing old floor tiles set in a cement bed and to remove the concrete behind an old fireplace. As a medium range SDS drill this is a great tool to have around and worked well in both drill and hammer mode (when using as a chisel).

It is heavier than your standard drill but not so heavy as to make using it a chore, providing you don’t push this drill above its comfort zone I’m pretty sure it will last a decent amount of time and will pay for itself quickly when used on the job. Always make sure you buy good quality bits.

The makita SDS drill has worked well used to drill hundreds of 12mm holes for a damproof cause with a chisel to remove old plaster and also to chase out for the first fix electric a reasonable All rounde

Had a specific job that I needed a SDS drill for so finally thought I’d buy one instead of trying to borrow, especially during lockdown. Checked a few out online with reviews and also by checking others regarding brands. Went for this as brand has decent reputation and not the cheapest but model is probably good for the home DIY’er. Did what I needed easily and with no problems. Regretting not buying one sooner and seeing how well it drilled through an outside wall will be going back to some fencing that I put up in the summer but not satisfactorily as the regular drill couldn’t cope with concrete I was trying to fix the posts to. Happy with the purchase.
