This trilogy is incredible. No series has ever made your choices in previous games matter more than this does, which makes buying it as a bundle like this all the more appealing.
ME1 hasn’t aged that well, but ME2 and ME3 are nothing short of masterpieces.
I have been waiting for this game to come on the Playstation 4 for many years. I used to play Mass Effect 2 and 3 on the Playstation 3 a lot, the game changed my life it showed me that you can meet some of the most amazing people in the Universe. Mass Effect 2 and 3 we allways be one of my favourite game series in the world. The series has some of the greatest characters you can find in gaming these days such as Garrus, Liara, Wrex, Tail, Mordin and Thane. My favourite character is Garrus, he feels like he is your bestfriend who you can rely on during sticky situations. For me this game is a must buy the story, the character, the weapons and the universe is incredible. The game arrived on time and it was in good condition.
Just completed a complete run through of ME1, 2 and 3 using the same FemSep character. Astonishing. Mind-blowing. Surprisingly moving and emotional. Amazing voice acting, in-depth game lore and a well written epic storyline combine to make this is an incredible gaming experience. Decisions made at the start of the first game impact the conclusion of the third, it all hangs together so well. Pathos and humour, action and intimate moments, but it’s the characters that lift the game to sublime levels. Loved the games when they were first released but packaged in the legendary edition including all DLCs and updated graphics made the experience even more enjoyable. A successful remaster of a gaming classic. Beautiful
Given the turbulent troubles BioWare have had in recent years with what I felt were mediocre games and management it’s fair to say I was sceptical about a remaster of the Mass Effect Trilogy. It has been a much needed release to try and claw back the fans who might have fallen out with EA era BioWare and I’m happy to say that it’s delivered.
Mass Effect – Legendary Edition culminates with the return of the original free games, the beloved characters and expanse that came years ago. The game comes bundled with most of the dlc (no dlc codes) though some pieces have not returned due to technical reasons involving the original dlc coding. The game is fat with content with an undeniable sheen which for the most part is very well done.
Mass Effect 1 has perhaps seen the most of the overhaul with ME 2 and 3 even by today’s standards looking rather nice and playing as solid games. As I mentioned before the upgrades on the game visually look mostly great but at the same time the change in lighting whilst realistic can take away from the original releases art style.
The game suffers from the same potato faced human npcs which can look strange alongside very well modelled character faces but that’s a pretty small gripe which doesn’t really remove too much immersion. The atmosphere and sound are still very much where they should be and I’ve not noticed too many bugs whilst playing.
On the whole though it’s a return of the BioWare we knew and loved pre-Inquistion with the hope they’ll channel some of this love into future games and recognise that these are the kinds characters we want who are brilliantly written and voiced. If you’ve never played ME before this is a treat and as a returning player to the trilogy I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgia and living it all over again.
The story is out of this world (pun intended) and spanning three games each around the 40 hour mark is worth the price alone.
This version has all the dlcs and much improved graphics.
Downside is that the boring planet scanning in number 2 is still there. And number 1 the landing on planets was meh. These are my only real gripes and i needed to do as I went for all three platinums.
There are a few bugs most noninvasive but I did get pushed out of boundaries by a keeper and once randomly when loading my character returned to the default shephard.
This is one of the best RPG’s of all time, and deserves a second play through if you played the original games, and definitely a first play through if you haven’t. The trilogy is epic and carries the weight of your decisions through all three story chapters. The Legendary Edition is the best version available across all platforms with the best sound, graphics and gameplay in addition to 40 DLC included. This is a must buy.
Lets face it, some classic games are in need of a facelift. While this isn’t a remake, or even a full remaster, it makes the game better to look at and fixes a few key areas that let the trilogy down. Don’t expect much improvement in the role-playing aspects or the plot, but at least driving around on planets takes a boost and is improved along the lines of Mass Effect: Andromeda’s implementation.
Storyline and quests are unchanged, and although the character looks are improved and the resolution is boosted, the underlying character movement and gameplay feel the same as the originals. I kept expecting better model articulation, but it was a trick played on my mind by the new lighting and textures.
Be prepared for a long installation process. Having gotten used to what can be achieved with next generation compression on the PS5, I found the wait as nearly 90Gb from two disks and 15Gb of update patches installed to be a bit tedious. It may be a trilogy of games, but all three need to be installed first before you can even get to the character creation screen. My solution was to watch a movie while this took place.
Multiplayer is missing from the Legendary Edition, but as the trilogy are RPGs at heart you are getting the full story from beginning to ending.
As someone who has been a fan of the original trilogy since it released but only owning an XBOX 360 for a while, I had been hoping to find the set together on another system for a while. It eventually got a release on PS3 but became notoriously difficult to find very quickly. It released on Steam but only the first 2, which I bought, then EA pulled their usual tricks and kept the 3rd for their own platform so it couldn’t be bought on Steam, only Origin. At this point I gave up telling myself I’ll just have to get an old 360 to play through them every now and then, but never did get around to it as I don’t have a lot of space to set up a lot of systems just for one game.
Playing and completing Andromeda on PS4, which, while good, didn’t quite live up to this trilogy, I missed the original story and Shephard and found myself once again wishing they were both on one system.
When I saw this releasing it was an instant buy. Not only are all 3 titles now available on the same platform as Andromeda, but they have been polished and brought somewhat up to date (at least to Andromeda’s level) visually. All the original DLC is here too which means for many who may not have bought DLC back in the day there will be plenty of new stuff to explore along the way. I initially thought it a shame the DLC was digital only and that it would be a lost part of the game once it’s no longer available to buy and all that exists would be disc versions missing the DLC but with this release it is all here preserved in physical format.
If you’re a fan of Andromeda and never got to play the original saga or enjoyed the originals and want to have it up to date with DLC playable on a current system, don’t hesitate to pick this up.
This is a masterpiece of a remaster! The first Mass Effect feels like a whole new game! The graphics are fantastic, the sound quality has improved so much and each time you land on a planet, you don’t realise how beautiful the first game actually is. All 3 games are beautifully remastered and the gameplay has improved a lot, especially when it comes to the sniper rifle in the first game. Everything is a lot more smooth, there’s no lag, there are some fine details in all three games that will get you to take notice that you didn’t notice before. Also in the first game, whenever you get a different assault rifle, each weapon has a different sound and a different burst. One rifle has you pressing the R2 button and other rifles will get you to hold down the R2 button and you can feel the difference. What a remaster and I am so happy with how all of the games has turned out!
Sci fi space opera in gaming doesn’t get more epic than this fantastic set of games. Its been great to play the trilogy again with all the dlc content and upgraded graphics and tweaks on my PS4 since playing back in the heady days of the Xbox360.
To modern eyes of people who have heard of the series but never played it, the original Mass Effect game, even with the remaster may still seem clunky in places, retaining some of the issues that dogged the game on its release over 14 years ago (the Mako, though much improved is still a pain to drive, the maps feel empty and some of the terrain makes exploration feel like a chore at times, plus the auto save on some missions will throw you back to the start of a level rather than a mid mission milestone)
However, the true heart of the game and its sequels is the writing. The world building and the epic storyline that carries your decisions across a massive narrative is second to none. The diverse range of characters, you will grow to love (and hate), scenes will be embedded in your mind long after the series has finished and if you can take your time and talk with everyone, explore everywhere and not just “run and gun” for the finish line. You will be rewarded with one of the most satisfying stories in gaming.
Mass Effect as a trilogy is a classic and this remaster (although not perfect) is a great time to experience one of the best RPGs in modern gaming.
It is a brilliant game, It has made me so nostalgic of when I played it on the PC when M1 first launched,
The graphics are beautiful and visualising stunning. The music and story line doesn’t disappoint. Everything is sharper and I still feel so engrossed in the story and all the decisions I have to choose.
I am only on M1 (4 hours in) and I can’t wait to play M2 and M3.
It was truly worth the wait.
If you want to to change lives, save people from horrible creatures and androids. Become the hero and decide the fate of others then buy this game!!!!
A fantastic remaster of my favourite trilogy of games. It has everything I wanted in a game. I loved the originals and now with the improvements in the Legendary Edition. It is a must have to any gamer. Totally worth the money.
Could never stomach playing ME1 when I first got into the series (sooooo janky), but this remastered version is far more palatable for anyone looking to try it. Some of the mechanics are still a little dated and some of the visuals still leave a lot to be desired, but the story more than makes up for it. Have only played a little of ME2 and ME3 on the legendary edition but they seem to hold up much better. Great for returning players and new players alike.
I have played the old Mass effect Trilogy, and just got started on Masseffect 1 the first of the 3 Legendary Triolgy, and a real joy to play. The music and images feel stronger, there is nice extra deatil in the background and brings back a lot of good memorys of when I came accross Mass effect manay years ago. I am looking forwad to exploring Masseffect world again.
My son is at Uni and cant access the PS4 version of Masseffect and its quite nice to make him Jealous.
My own (unsubstantiated theory) is that they have revamped the Mass Effecr Triology to help the game designers tune them selves to make the next Mass Effect (5) after Andromeda so I am looking forward to that.
Legendary series rocks so far, so i am pleased I bought the game. 🙂
well only on first game and it looks fantastic its like a new game all over again i played the first game years ago but on a 4k tv this is eye candy great game.
Played Mass Effect 2&3 years ago and loved them. So very pleased to now get to play the start of my favourite trilogy ever. Even on the older Mass Effect 1 the quality is superb and on my ps5 the loading times are non existent. I installed the trilogy and 3 hrs later still just couldn’t put it down. Its like seeing an old long lost friend that has improved but not lost the reason you loved it so much. Didnt like the new Jane Shepherd that comes as standard but you can revert to the old set up if you wish.
Welcome back old friend
Rather than comment on the games themselves this review is more focused on the execution of the ‘remaster’. (There are already many comprehensive reviews of these games out there: it’s a fairy common consensus that they rank amongst the all time finest examples of the genre).
I’m basing this on about 6 hours of ME1 and a brief look at 2 + 3. Essentially 2 + 3 haven’t changed all that much (beyond looking prettier). Again, this isn’t a criticism at all – they were already fantastic games.
The updates to the opening game of the trilogy are much more comprehensive and thank goodness these changes have delivered exactly what so many fans of the series were hoping for.
Mass Effect is a 14 year old game so yes, even the overhauled graphics on display here don’t match a modern AAA title – but what has been achieved is remarkable. The environments in particular look awesome. More importantly the attention to detail in ironing out so many little frustrations from the original release is superb.
All told, this is a great update to what was already a truly great trilogy.
Visually all three games are absolutely stunning in 4K, I can’t praise them enough. There’s so much more detail and texture to surfaces in the environments and on the characters, it really is a beautiful game to play.
The in-game lighting is fabulous, but not the same as the character creator screens, so it took a few attempts to get the right in-game appearence. The soundscape has so much more depth and richness to it not just in terms of the main sounds but also the background, it really does enhance the experience. All games now have a photo mode which is a great addition to the trilogy and lets you take some superb screenshots.
The game comes on 2 discs, a data disk and a play disk and already there’s an 11.5 GB update and it’s likely there’ll be more to follow, although you can play without installing this.
So far I’ve seen no differences regarding mission content in any of the series – codes remain the same, crates and such are all in the same places and conversation branches are the same – as you’d expect. Sadly this means there’s still a huge amount of walking around the citadel in ME1 (and other locations) and some of the elevator rides seem to take just as long (the skip button doesn’t seem to save much time).
ME2 and ME3 are identical in terms of gameplay, but look stunning with the visual enhancements and I’m certain there are some longer cut-scenes in places. The downside is that ME2 is still requires a lot of time scanning planets as do the “search & rescue” elements of ME3. The plus side is that there seems to be additional (or more prominent) background dialogue that provide some nice touches to ME universe. It’s worth mentioning that there’s no multiplayer element to the Galaxy at War, so your readiness score isn’t subject to any reduction and can easily be above 8000 before starting the final mission.
AI seems to have improved, but there are issues. One example is that enemies will pursue you in pretty much a straight line, which is fine unless there’s an object in the way as they will remain obscured – so you have to give up trying to pick them off from a good position and have to go close quarters. This is also a slight issue with squadmates when they follow you and you will have to go back for them from time to time.
Controls take a bit of getting used to, they’re intuitive enough if you’ve played before, but have some subtle differences like the touch pad and hot keys. I’d say they are a bit of an amalgamation of the ME we’re used to and Andromeda. There is a pop-up tutorial option to take you the controls during gameplay, but’s very intrusive, as is the auto save box.
Achievements have been tweaked but are pretty similar to before, they’re now spread over 4 titles – the individual parts (ME1-3) and a common section for the legendary edition. There aren’t any glitches with them but there are some inconsistencies, like power usage sometime counting squadmates and sometimes only Shepard.
In case you’re wondering – yes the Mako now has a boost and looks a bit more robust, although it’s still quite tricky to handle and struggles with some terrains. This isn’t too bad to live with as it’s no worse than before, but as Thresher Maws are now very challenging on hardcore and above, it does have an impact.
BTW – Eletania has just as many sodding space monkeys this time around.
This trilogy is incredible. No series has ever made your choices in previous games matter more than this does, which makes buying it as a bundle like this all the more appealing.
