I love it! The taste of the food is something different and the fact that it doesn’t need any oil omg!
What a great machine. I’ve never had such perfect chips before!
Very easy to use and clean. I should have bought one year’s ago.
Anything you can cook in an oven, you can cook in this air fryer.
Highly recommend this Phillip’s air fryer.
Very easy to use and clean, it does the job. Minimal oil required, best for healthy eating.
Finally decided to take the plunge and buy an air fryer , with energy cost rising thought it might be cheaper using this than the oven . Well , after using it for a couple of weeks it’s been a great decision . It’s not a large capacity but it suits me fine as I live on my own , so using it for chips and fried chicken for example is ideal , I use frozen chips and they only take 10 minutes to cook along side the fried chicken , cooked to perfection lovely and crispy . The oven would take 15 minutes to get to correct temperature , then 20 minutes to cook . Used the keep warm setting and that works well , not got round to other settings yet . For me it’s been brilliant and it’s easy to clean . A lot of reviewers have complained about not having a user manual , most products you buy these days don’t have one , I just downloaded it , problem solved . I am very pleased with my purchase .
No smells, consistent results, easy to use menu and controls, expensive, but great quality
Love this air fryer. It is easy to use, easy to clean and cooks food to perfection. It is economical to use, the food is cooked so quickly and I have hardly used the gas oven since I purchased this. Wipes clean, very easy to use touch panel. I can’t fault it at all. Would certainly recommend and purchase this brand again if needed.
Just wanted it for oven chips, and it works, crisp unt light brown every time. Now I’m getting a bit more adventurous and doing sprouts. Overall a really good gadget, no idea what all the programs do but Im not bothered
It is small and powerful comparing to an oven. Its container is too small to bake a whole chicken. But it doesn’t matter for me because we cannot finish a whole chicken in one meal anyway. I bought it for more than a week and I am now using 5 times a week.
I could split my life between before and after an airfryer . It’s true that we need to get used to it, I mean, the time to cook for certain foods vary therefore you need to keep an eye at it at the beginning. Once you get on track, everything is fabulous
Replaced my old Phillips as the basket was hard to clean. This one is much easier to keep clean. It has a detachable basket which is very important and is very quiet. A fantastic product. The only downside is it is a little on the small side.
Good air fryer, easy to clean and use, replaced my previous model that lasted 3 years!
I spent a lot of time looking for an Air-fryer that was not heavy or difficult to clean so after a few questions/answers from other purchasers of this item on amazon and deciding to purchase I can honestly say it meets all my expectations as it cooks perfectly and is so easy to clean afterwards that I can recommend this product wholeheartedly however the only downside is that it may not have the capacity to cook for a large family but is defo good enough to cook for 2-4 persons depending on what type of food you are cooking..
Very efficient for quick food preparations, no need open oven for one piece of chicken or some fries. Easy clean and convenient for daily life.
after buying a cheap one that never worked properly I went out and got a good one. Great product easy to use and so much better for you
good product would be better with more information and bookle
Easy to use and set up. Easy to clean and recipe booklet comes in very handy.
I loved this product, so the frozem vegetables are more flavorful, the hambrgers are crunchy and soft inside, is easy to clean up and silent.
I recommend this product.
I have bought it for two months and it is really easy to use and clean!
It helps me to save time in cooking and making the food easier!
Can cook almost anything in this! Meat, chips, anything frozen, bread, bakery goods LITERALLY ANYTHING! Easy to use and easy to clean! Looks stylish on your kitchen countertop too! Would highly recommend!
I have used this to cook fries from frozen along with beef sausages together in the specified time and the food comes out exceptional. It tastes far more tastier than cooked in the oven. Cooked seasoned chicken thighs. Delicious. This is a great product.
I haven’t done much other than cooked frozen items in it , a basket of chips would take about 25mns with constant shaking .
This is a very good Airfryer.. It doesn’t hold a lot but the best thing about it the food doesn’t move, so for delicate item it is perfect. I found with other airfryers that turn they can mash some food items up, this doesn’t and it perfect for warming chicken etc
Easy to clean, quick to use, nice oil free food.
Havent been able to connect to the app unfortunately.
Happy with my purchase easy to used i would recommend
4L is a bit small compared to its size and the space it can take in my kitchen.
I like to use it to bake potatoes / sweet potatoes, it’s way faster than using my oven, and hopefully saved some energy.
Easy to use but I wish they gave a recipe book or to give a list of basic cooking instructions for easy & quick things like sausages and what other foods can be cooked easily. I have to keep referring to Google!
Easy to clean, looks good on the worktop and so far, so good.
Good fryer but could not get the WiFi to work
I am generally pleased with this: it cooks evenly and quickly with the only proviso some foods can come out a little dry.
The purchase has been spoilt for me as I was excited to find it in Amazon Warehouse as ‘Used – as new’ which saved about 18. The full price one would have come next day but this one took a week which only matters because, by the time it arrived, the full price on had been reduced and was 7 less that my discounted one.
I tried to contact Amazon to have a moan, if nothing else, but all the contact optioens were irrelevant to this case so I gave up.
Bought this air fryer after reading many reviews.
So easy to use, the food is amazing, easy to clean and the best kitchen appliance I have.
Wish I’d bought it years ago!
As I non cook person this is the tool what I need. Easy to use well made. Nothing to blame for now.. Kids love it!
Great fryerWould be good if it came with instructions but otherwise a good product. Lighter and easier to use than previous model with a safety catch over release button. Would recommend
The size of this isn’t large enough for a family. 1 or 2 people is not a problem but it’s not large enough for a family. I got this saw the size and returned it right away.
Bought this for my lil one and it s just amazing.
The design looks amazing, its stylish. Doesn’t make loud noise (very little fan sound) easy to use, not for all foods though, sometimes it can dried up the food so you have check temperature for frozen food and as well as chilled food.
So easy to use, quick and efficient and saves power!
I am happy I bought this Philips Essential Air Fryer, I can cook everything, with just a teaspoon of olive oil.
I recommended it.
Simple & practical design, not take to muck space, done the job + less mess & less work. It’s really worth money spent.
Simple to use, cooks items quickly and taste is excellent. Simple to clean, and fat from cooked food is vastly reduced.
Great airfryer use it all the time, should have purchased a long time ago.
Very happy with this air fryer, easy to use food tastes so good highly recommend.
Great for all types of food. My only regret is that I didn’t get one sooner.
Having had Phillip’s before (our original got broken) (our fault) we tried a different make and just couldnt get along with it, so we went back to Phillips and I’m so glad we did would highly recommend
Easy operation and quick cooking for many kinds of food!
After opening the box, I was pleased by the stylish look of the Philips Air Fryer and the fact that it did not take up too much of a footprint on my kitchen counter top. The size of the cooking pan is ideal for up to two- three people – but definitely not a large family – for that you would need the larger Philips fryer. The controls seem straight forward and there is an App to download for recipes etc, which saves on paper manuals and cook books – saving the rain forest, as well as the amount of oil to cook your food. I’m looking forward to cooking dinner tomorrow with it – it looks a quality item and very well made, compared to cheaper offerings on the market. A recommended purchase.
Really easy to use dose a great job I love mine a must buy.
We use it all the time, only faults are because it doesn’t rotate the food you have to move the food around at intervals and the basket is quite small, other than that makes really nice crispy food.
It’s amazing that it can be put in dish washer. Easy to clean, happy to use.
At the beginning I thought it’d be an additional useless gadget in the kitchen, but we are using it not only to fry!
I love this air fryer! Really easy to use, works great!
I like that I can prepare a variety of meals, although on weekends I usually treat myself and prepare some meals or bread in it and it is tasty so I don’t use the oven much anymore and this has been great for me because there are only two of us people at home, so it’s been a lot easier for me to cook without always having to preheat the oven and wait forever for the food to be ready there.
You can also keep food warm for more than 20 min with the function it has.
It has 7 preset programs to prepare a variety of meals. I haven’t tried all of them yet, but the ones I’ve tried to date have met my expectations.
Fries, pastel, frozen sandwiches, fish, meat, chicken thighs and roasted vegetables.
The fryer is of high quality so it will have very good durability although I am still careful when cleaning it, the removable container can be washed in the dishwasher so it is easy to clean after that I dry it with a cloth and have it ready for the next use.
Everything arrived in perfect condition without scratches and was well packaged. So I would be happy to recommend it.
Makes the best chips and no messy oven or scary fat slitting. Very easy to use and good for chops and sausages too.
Great product, easy to clean too. Can’t wait to make fantastic meals with this gadget.
Such a life changer, love using it specially when u have kids it’s perfect I will recommend to anyone
Food tates great
Instructions could be better
Very happy though.
After my cheap tower air fryer packing in after a year of constant use I decided to spend a little more money on a new air fryer as I use mines almost every day. I have owned this Phillips air fryer for a few months now and can’t say I’m disappointed. Plenty of preset options to choose from, simple user interface, and lots of space in basket to cook a lot at once. Can cook frozen chips in around 10-14 minutes (portion for 2). The removable basket from oil pan makes easy cleaning and easy dishing out. Everything is perfect but there is no app connectivity which is slightly misleading from instructions. Would buy another one if this breaks.
Great for when you want to make dinner or any kind of meal, really, without all the fuss and bother you typically would. To begin with, the interfact is very easy to use and master, and loading/unloading this thing will become second nature. Really nice to use; the handle is ergonomic and overall the whole product just feels very ‘smooth’ to use.
With just a simple bit of oil, you can expertly produce some chips, but equally hash browns or meat will be all the better when put in this, too. Cooking time wasn’t bad at *all*.
Very simple to clean, which is a huge bonus, and surprisingly silent. It’s a real joy to use this thing.
I have cooked sausage rolls
In this airfryer they were lovel. I cooked breaded fish
It was lovely and crispy much better than the fish shop. Would definitely recommend. The food taste so much nicer than a normal ove
Love this airfryer still getting used to it as my old one is a dial one so more easier to use than the digital one. Still getting used to it as no instructions come with this which they did with my old one the on off button is with the play and pause button and I have found you have to press and hold for it to turn off otherwise it keeps playing and pausing but I’m sure I will get there with it. Highly reccomend to others thinking of purchasing as I could not live without one these for day to day fresh food cooking and and quicker clean cooking
Great product. Air fry’s everything. Quick and easy fried food.
If you looking for airfryer this is definitely good choice. If you are single , the size is ok.
I was a bit skeptical at first as to how well this would work but it’s proved very versatile. Very quiet when operating and easy to use. It’s really only big enough for two portions but it saves putting on the oven just for one or two items. Cooks quick, around 30% less time than normal and not waiting to warm up. So far we’ve cooked fish fingers, sausages. breaded fish, meatballs and falafels and all came out great!
Initially I was a bit disappointed by the size of the basket but I really liked the sleek looking design and quality of the build so I tried some recipes from Philips app which I downloaded. I made chips from fresh potatoes which came out beautifully and chicken wings were crispy and cooked evenly. Many air fryer reviewers recommended the bigger basket size and I tried cosori 5.5L and instant 5.7L but chicken wings came out very greasy, cooked unevenly and took longer than Philips.
Even though I need to make two batches for my family, I like to eat it crispy with less fat and better taste than oven cooked food. That’s why I bought the air fryer.
I also like the basket which is not mesh bottom so it is much easier to clean. This machine does not release any unpleasant smell as some others do.
I am really happy to use this and highly recommend it.
othing to dislike , its easy to use and so easy to clean , chips and fries not greasy taste so much better love it .
Handles everything you throw at it without the need for any extra oil or fat. I could never go back. My previous Philips Air Fryer was still working but proving harder and harder to clear nevertheless it’s now been gifted to a relative and as far as I know still works fine so they last for ages.
This is great for cooking things in a clean and healthy way. Had to look up a YouTube video to see how it worked as no proper instructions came with it. It does seem very expensive for what it does and I kinda wished I had bought a cheaper one. It does look sleek and none of the deep fat fryer smells.
Brilliant piece of cooking equipment and easy to use..Food from it is top drawer and no mess at all.Easy to clean too.Chips are a lot more healthy as you use little oil and vegi sausages class and taste is really good, Little bit of experimenting to get the best from it but pleased I made the move away from a fryer and it’s really really good.
I was a little weary when I was ordering this, but the wide insisted so we have given it ago.
First impressions, nice size, not to big, fits in the cupboard neatly, and sits nicely on the kitchen worktop.
There were no real instructions with this product, which made learning how to use it very difficult. This was a little disappointing. There is a app to install to help out, but this fryer is not in the app options. Once I got over the issue it has all been great.
We have mainly cooked chips, but these cook very well now, we have tried a few other food items, with succes.
Looking forward to trying more.
The product I very easy to clean, wipes down well.
Styish design and superb machine. No manual or instructions upon arrival but found them online!
We love this fryer. I never understood the hype around them but I do now.
It really is so much easier and healthier to cook.
It heats up really quickly.
I reheat everything in it too.
So easy to clean.
Easy to use.
As a die hard fan of the chip pan, switching to something that didn’t involve bottles of oil at a time seemed like sacrilege. However I am pleased to announce that I am a convert.
This particularly air fryer has been a fantastic introduction to the world of much less clogged arteries. It’s a fairly tidy looking device and doesn’t take up much space as far as fryers go. It’s all black design looks sleek but can be a bit of a finger print magnet.
It’s little touch display is nice and functional and responds well. The pre built programmes are great and for the most part bang on the money.
The unit is super easy to clean and as a result gets cleaned much more often and doesn’t smell nearly as bad as a traditional fryer.
I really have enjoyed all the food I have cooked with it. Especially the chips.
I thoroughly recommend giving it a try.
This is brilliant makes life easier cooking! You can cook most things in there. When using it for first few times keep an eye on food as it cooks quite quickly! Love that you can cook a chicken in it! Very tasty and not dry either!!! I replaced my old Philips air fryer with this.. and this is a beast compared to the old one! Its amazing and so easy to use too!
To be honest, I have tried several air fryers but this one has something special at least for me. This one is more responsive and easy to use than I have found after using it a couple of times for meal preparation.
This kills a lot of fat out of the meat as well as from the oil in case of deep frying sort of things. It is something true in terms of health as it has helped me encountering the fatty stuff to take care of my family.
Its Rapid Air technology claims to cook with up to 90% less fat. Now, I can’t say anything for its perfection, but yes, it still cooks a lot better than what I have ever tested out in my kitchen.
You can cook several types of meals either through frying, grilling, baking, as well as roasting also. So, it’s almost a complete package to use for any sort of cooking. The touch screen is also easy to use & it has a responsive interface with almost no significant lag. The maneuverability is also pretty decent of this fryer.
I love air fryers, they’re so good. This one is a good size too, easy to clean, perfect.
Just yes to this Philips UK Kitchen and Home Essential Air Fryer with Rapid Air Technology, 0.8Kg, 4.1L, 1400 Watt, 4 portions, Black, HD9252/91
Brilliant, well made, replacing my old one
These air fryers can cook just about anything you can think of and no fat
Every household must have!!
Great quality, not as heavy and large as my other air fryer which is a huge bonus. This air fryer can roast, bake, reheat, grill and fry. Has 7 different programs: for frozen food, fries, fish, meat, cake, chicken and grilled veg program too.keep warm (30min ) program included but that is pretty standard in this sort of appliance. Application is very nice, simple to use, daily inspirations can be set up. Weight of that air fryer is 4,5 kg, capacity 4.1 l. Fairly easy to clean and operate. Food comes out delicious and cooked with 90% less fat/ oil. So far I have tried fries, chicken nuggets and I have grilled some asparagus- all came out super delicious. I couldn’t be happier really, I love this air frier, planning to bake something very soon to try this program too. Very smart device, makes my life much easier. Worth its price, great quality, good brand but most of all delicious and healthy meals. My full recommendation.
Bought this as it is one of the best brand of air fryers and was tired of turning on the oven to cook for only 2 people.
I tried this as soon as it arrived and made frozen hash browns in 20 minutes with only a light spray of oil. Result is amazing, they are really crispy and fast to make as you don’t have to preheat this air fryer before cooking.
In the evening i tried to cook the whole dinner: frozen salmon and fresh asparagus and mushrooms. They were a little dry but I think I can do better if I just learn the cooking times properly as I may have overcooked everything.
It is very easy to clean, just wipe with soapy water, it doesn’t stick at all, it’s not noisy and very easy to use. Also the basket is big enough for 2 portions so that saves a lot of energy wasted on the oven.
I’m glad I bought this and not a cheaper brand, really worth the money.
I didn’t think I needed another gadget in the kitchen but this air fryer has been a very welcome addition. It is easy to use and a very clean method of cooking even without the health benefits of cooking with less fat and oil. It is about the size of my bread maker so not overlarge. It is not too heavy so can be moved to a convenient place for storage if necessary. But sadly there is no storage method for the cable and plug.It is useful to have counter space in front of the air fryer when in use to place the basket when it is removed from the fryer. There was a slight smell a bit like a hair dryer when I first began to use it but this has worn off. There is a cooking smell when the fryer is in use but nowhere near as bad as frying in a pan. I would say this would suit a small family as you could probably do 2-3 portions of chips in one batch. I cooked 5 cupcakes at once. It cooks quite well but I will say the first few attempts were a bit hit and miss but I think the more I use it the better I will be at judging cooking times and temperatures.Homemade chicken nuggets worked really well with a crisp coating and tender chicken. There are preset buttons to cook by weight e.g. drumsticks which should take out some of the guess work.
The product loses a star from me because the information supplied with the machine is very scant. There is a basic leaflet with diagrams on how to wash before use and safety instructions etc but in order to find out how to use it to cook things and program it you need to go online to download the user manual. This has guidance on cooking basic food, chips, chops, burgers etc + care instructions and troubleshooting to get you going and should (in my opinion) be included in paper format in the box to be retained for future reference. It also includes information about the presets and a ‘keep warm’ setting which is a very useful feature that I wouldn’t otherwise have known about. It also mentions the safety turn off when the basket is removed during cooking.
A recipe app has been created to assist with inspiration (NutriU) but I found it very American in style and ingredients. I was surprised at the variety of recipe types, not just typically fried food, so I have tried a few cake and scone recipes which were quite successful although a bit dry and saved some for future use. You have to be online to use the app which is another thing I don’t like so while you can bookmark recipes you cannot save them for offline viewing.
So overall to cook for 2-3 people it is a welcome addition, easy and clean to use.It can be used for a range of recipes but is lacking in usage information without going online and should have the user manual included in the box.
This is a super duper air fryer.
Yes it is a little expensive.
But I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for.
It is so simple to use.
My advice is to get on the internet and get some recipes.
I love chicken cooked in this airfryer. And chips And vegies.
It saves time on cooking as opposed to the oven.
And it saves time on washing up!!!! A bonus.
Forget the negatives.
Just buy one for yourself and see.
A brilliant addition to our kitchen.
Surprisingly good cooker. Having used a similar machine in a different make before, this one is so much better! Did not leave the kids turkey dinasaurs dry and hard, but even more moist than my halo cooker leaves them. They only took a total of 12mins to cook from frozen, having already pre heated the cooker a few minutes before hand. I turned them once half way through cooking. Next I tried Frozen fries. But I always microwave to defrost them first for 3mins, whilst the cooker was warming up. Then threw them in it and only shook them half way through cooking. Used the preset chips setting of 180d, 22mins . So I put the defrosted fries in when the timer had 19mins left on the clock, after the pre heat. The chips were done 9mjns later with 10mins left spare on the timer clock. Bare in mind I was doing a descent sized portion for one person. But they turned out brilliant. Crisp on the outside and fluffy soft in the middle. No hard burnt dried look to them at tall. So I was very impressed. Especially as my family won’t eat anything that resembles what a normal main oven does to fries/chips. Again they actually came out very slightly better than my halo oven. I only shook them once after the first 4 mins they were cooking. Next I tried cooking fresh chicken. Rubbed a little oil all over them to prevent burning. Used the preset chicken 180d, 24mins setting. Put the chicken in when 22mins was left on the timer. Flipped them over half way through and they turned out beautifully cooked and moist. I used my meat thermometer to double check they were cooked properly and they were both well above 165f like the turkey dinasaurs were in the pics I’ve added. My halo oven takes even longer for the same fresh chicken to cook to this high temperature. What I also really like is the safety release switch, that you have to flick forward first, before pressing the basket release button from the base unit compartment. On over cookers similar to this, they don’t have that added safety feature and it’s easily pressed when your hurrying and press it automatically without thinking. So top marks to Phillips for adding that! I put the cooker onto just a basic plastic antibacterial chopping board I had spare. Just in case the base got too hot and marked my kitchen counter. As I was worried the feet on it sat too low. But it actually didn’t mark the plastic chop board at tall. The main heat whilst cooking, comes out the top rear of the cooker. I had the cooker pulled to the front of my counter. But I could feel the tiles behind it and the kitchen unit set back above got very warm, but not hot like u wouldn’t be able to keep your hand there. The sides of the cooker walls do get very hot. So you can not move the cooker until it cools back down. The basket size is quite small but good enough for two adult portions I’d say. Fantastic for making quick lunches for children. Very easy to clean. So far I’ve only wiped it down with kitchen paper and it looks brand new still. But very easy to get a soap dish sponge into both the basket and the base compartment it sits in. Over all a fab cooker that does what it says on the box. Instructions were useless and a waste of the extra paper they were printed on. But the cooker is so easy to use, I just plugged it in and guessed right away how to use it. For once the preset buttons were actually useful to me. Which you can even use as a starting guide and up and lower your own temp and cooking timer too. It even has a keep food warm setting on it. I can recommend this cooker without a doubt! If there was anything I personally would like an improvement on, it’s the colour. In an ideal world I would of loved a grey coloured one. Black can look harsh sometimes and being glossy plastic it certainly attracts the dust from my condenser drier each day. Other than that I’m really, really pleased how I was able to cook 3 different kinds of food so well in this cooker on the first go, and equally impressed how easy it was to clean out afterwards.
This Air Fryer from Philips is an excellent small appliance for the kitchen and one that I am sure will be used time and time again. In our house the Airfryer is only beaten in usage terms by the electric kettle and the toaster.
There are some good improvements over my previous model. Firstly, and maybe the most important is that the appliance now switches off if the food basket/holder is removed from the machine. Previous models that I have owned did not do this. Another good feature is the wire mesh net at the bottom of the food holder has gone. It is replaced by a flat slotted piece of metal which is much easier to clean if washing up by hand.
The switch to a digital display is a slight improvement but not that important to me as I usually judge the doneness manually rather than rely on a timer. Likewise, the digital temperature control is OK but again there was not much wrong with the old rotary wheel non digital method. Keeping up with the modern digital age I suppose.
Many of the recipes in the Philips app call for more attachments to be added to cook certain dishes. While it is possible to get by without the optional attachment you could be missing out on a lot of other potential uses. I do feel given the price of the Philips against some other brands they could have included an extra attachment or two.
Not having previously owned an Air Fryer, I was very pleased to be able to try out this model from Philips, who introduced the first ever Air Fryer in 2010. Though I like to eat healthily, I must admit I’d not paid much attention to this technology as I’d seen it – wrongly – as mostly a kid of alternative to a deep fat fryer and it’s years since I had one of those.
The truth is the Philips Essential Air Fryer is a most versatile piece of kitchen equipment that will perform a very wide range of tasks effectively – frying chips being just one of them. It will also grill and roast, bake and reheat food. In effect, it’s a mini oven. It can even steam and dehydrate foods. One thing to consider if space is short is that this appliance must have at least 10cm of space behind it and the same above it when it’s in operation and it does take up a fair bit of worktop room. Another point to note is that on opening all you’ll find is a booklet in various languages which explains various cautionary notes. It’s not really an instruction book or beginner’s guide. I am more mature but surely I can’t be the only end user who deplores this transference of even the most basic aspects of a piece of technology to online platforms?
To use, an illustrated leaflet in the pack refers you to Philips’ NutriU app to access 500+ recipes. Unfortunately so far this specific Air Fryer is not yet included on the app, which is disappointing. You can download the app to a smartphone using the QR code on the back of the leaflet. There is a wide variety of recipes and cooking styles on the app – I would just prefer a recipe book to be included too with the appliance. There appears to be a widespread belief among manufacturers now that all prospective purchasers must have a smartphone – which is not necessarily the case – and it doesn’t follow that only smartphone users must be interested in cookery-related technology.
That said, this Philips Essential Air Fryer is interesting and could be very beneficial to those who’d like to cut down on fat and calories. I hadn’t appreciated just how little – or no – fat is required compared to conventional cooking. Air Fryers are a type of convection oven. Instead of using hot oil, hot air circulating around the food at high speed cooks it – resulting in cooking times at least 20% shorter. As the food gets coated in a thin layer of hot oil, food can brown, unlike in a microwave oven. An Air Fryer also reduces cooking odours.
Being new to Air Fryers, I tried Googling some general tips. It is important that the basket should not be overfilled and that the powerful built-in fan can dry food out so it shouldn’t be cooked for too long. This particular Philips Air Fryer is digital and has a wide choice of pre-set programmes which do enable the user, even a novice like me, to get started straight away. It is easy to use and the flavour of food cooked in the Air Fryer is very tasty once you get going. The removable basket will go in the top rack of the dishwasher to clean, which is handy. This is not big enough for larger families – it will only cook 2 or 3 portions, so ideal for smaller households.
I’d still have felt more confident as someone new to Air fryers with a brief printed instruction manual and a few basic printed recipes but overall the Philips Essential Air Fryer has been a useful addition to my culinary repertoire and a healthier way of cooking some foods. I look forward to having a go at baking a cake or a few buns in the Air Fryer – there’s a wide range of options to keep keen cooks engaged
Absolutely perfect it’s great for fast meals I’ve cooked chips, chicken wings, breakfast hash, pork belly, lamb shish. it makes cooking so much easier and faster with the added benefit of less fat. It take a little getting used to but it heats up super fast and everything it done with a timer and automatically turns off, so no risk of forgetting and leaving it on. Just remember to remove and shake the basked to mix ingredients every 7-10min and don’t overfill. I would say it’s a good size to cook for 2-4 people
PROS:
1) COOKS FOOD VERY WELL AND QUICKLY!
2) EASY TO CLEAN
3) LOOKS SWISH AND FUTURISTIC
4) MULTIPLE PRESET PROGRAMMES
5) ACCOMPANYING APP WITH CAORIE CONTROLLED RECIPES
6) WIPE CLEAN TOUCH SCREEN INTERFACE
CONS:
1) APPALLING INSTRUCTIONS!
2) RELATIVELY EXPENSIVE
3) NOT VERY INTUITIVE CONSIDERING A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS
4) TECHNICALLY A SMALL FAN ASSISTED OVEN!
5) AIR DOESN’T CIRCULATE AROUND LARGE ITEMS LIKE CHICKEN PIECES
This Philips Air Fryer is a great tool to help you live a healthier lifestyle. However, let’s not kid ourselves, this isn’t really a fryer at all since there is no immersion in hot oil. Where it scores is that it is very quick to heat up and maintains the temperature very well.
I have never tried to make Unlucky Fried Kitten ((OK don’t be offended, it’s called humour)… just a note to explain to the permanent web surfers keeping our internet safe from anyone with a different opinion.) I decided to put this fryer to the test, and in fairness it scored 8/10. It actually lost 2 marks because due to appalling instructions (more on that later) because of operator error. In other words, it was my fault, however, in my defence, the marketing pictures show food stacked on top of each other. The time I spent making my UFK and carefully coating my chicken in 151 herbs and spices (much better than that fake Colonel’s) was sort of wasted. The pieces that were on top of one another, didn’t crisp up in the spots where they were in contact with each other.
This happened because the air does not circulate and encompass each and every part of whatever you’re cooking. The solution to this is to not stack food, only put one layer. Doing chips will be slightly better, because the chips have a larger surface area to volume ratio, which means more of the chip is contacted by the air. However, I believe you will have similar problems with chips unless you randomise the layers. What I mean by that is if the chips are all in a line on top of one another, the air won’t circulate. However, if you want the best result, I suggest that you create a cross pattern by laying one row/layer of chips horizontally then the next layer should be placed vertically on top so they are perpendicular to layer below. Repeat this with all your chips and there should be enough room for the air to circulate. Once you have finished doing that, your husband will come back from the chippy saying don’t bother! If you persist, you will probably produce some chips that look like the marketing hyped ones on the box.
The UFK (chicken I cooked) went in at 180 deg and 20 minutes which was the preset showing for chicken. It was a matter of touching the chicken drumstick icon and letting the machine cook the chicken. The chicken, as you can see from the plate and the basket photos came out succulent and juicy. The coating where open to the air was crispy (but not as appetising (in terms of looks) as chicken that’s been nuked in 180 DegC oil.
I believe this is down to two reasons. Firstly, the chicken I used was skinless breast. Chicken skin has a layer of fat below it and this would have made the coating look more “shiny” as opposed to looking dry. Where the chicken had been in contact with other pieces, the coating was cooked, but soggy. However, in fairness, the chicken was very succulent, juicy, and due to my superb culinary skills, very tasty. The second problem of the soggy batter/coating was down to firstly, me not having any instructions and secondly to me believing the BS hype. What I mean by that, as an experienced domestic cook, common sense would have told me that that would happen. If there was some form of rotation in the basket, this wouldn’t have happened. However, if there was some form of agitator or rotation, since there was no immersion in oil, the batter would come off. Thus the simple solution to this is do not put chicken breasts on top of one another. Just put one layer. Given that this is a small version of the Philips air fryer, I would say that this sized fryer would be suitable for two adults or two adults and two young children. Once the kids are heading towards their teens, this would not be big enough to fuel their insatiable appetites for eating you out of house and home.
My wife enjoyed my UFK recipe, which I will share with you now. It makes the chicken coating spicy. Make sure you use skinned chicken, personally I prefer legs and thighs, than breasts… I’m talking about chicken, behave! Legs and thighs will also allow you to arrange the chicken in a way that offers the least contact between the pieces. Obviously, if you are on a health drive, do skinless, but since you’re baking your chicken rather than deep frying, I have authorised your indulgence, so it’s ok!
Recipe:
Plain flour for dusting and coating (quantity by sight… about 200g for the coating, and some to dip the chicken in).
One egg for the egg wash
Coating:
200g of plain flour
1/2 teaspoon of chilli powder
1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon of coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon of Garam masala
2 teaspoons of garlic salt
1 teaspoon of ground coarse black pepper
1/2 teaspoon of table salt
Olive oil spray
Method:
1) dip the chicken pieces first into plain flour (to give the egg something to stick to) make sure all areas of the chicken are covered in flour.
2) Dip into the egg (which you beat with a fork…. after removing the shell (info for the easily offended types)also no actual physical violence was used, it’s a culinary term). Make sure you coat all the chicken surface.
3) Having put all the coating ingredients into a large bowl, mix them with a fork so thoroughly mixed.
4) Dip the egg coated chicken into the coating mixture, covering all areas and pressing the coating on the chicken. Put chicken to one side on a RACK rather than a tray (which would remove the coating underneath the chicken).
5) Using a 1 cal olive oil spray (or like I did, fill up a pump spray bottle with olive oil) and spray the air fryer cooking basket on all sides, and spray the individual pieces of chicken covering as much as possible with oil spray.
6) Stick them in the air fryer and check for “doneness” by skewering the thickest part of the chicken and look for clear juices. If there is any pinkness, keep the chicken in longer.
Cleaning was pretty easy as the basket and holder is coated with good quality Teflon non-stick surface. I washed them because the dishwasher was already on, and they cleaned up easily using just a plastic dish brush. There is one slight problem in the design when it comes to cleaning. The gaps between in the tray/holder and in the basket between the handle and basket could become clogged with food. A mechanism to separate the handle from the basket would be a better design for hygiene purposes.
The Philip’s Air Fryer comes with what can only be described as the most inadequate and disgraceful set of instructions ever. Of course, the warnings are clear, and that is required by law. However, the infographics type instructions (used to save money in translating into different languages) are the worst I have ever seen.
For a good example, have a look at the last photo which shows which methods you can use to clean the basket and holder. In Column 3, is some indeterminate and unidentified item that I have seriously only just figured out because I zoomed the photo whilst writing this. It’s a Brillo (wire wool) scouring pad!! I feel like I have just won the lottery jackpot!!! Unbelievable, how terrible these instructions are. I had no idea whether I should preheat it, burn off the manufacturing chemicals at high temperature or wash it before first use. I did all three, just to make sure. I would have cleaned and burned off the manufacturing residual chemicals anyway, but pre-heating was an idea of mine, due to no instructions. Now let me tell you something, Mr. Philips of Eindhoven, I have presented engineering papers at an academic conference up the road from you in Enschede. I was recognised as an expert in process modelling and mapping by the UK NHS and the Indian Government’s Health Ministry. I completed a PhD in manufacturing strategies and I have worked on some massive applied research projects……AND I couldn’t understand what your colleagues thought would pass for instructions! Perhaps, I needed some of your famous Dutch medicinal compounds, but since I try to look after myself I can’t rely on psychotropic substances to read your crummy instructions. What hope has the majority of the population got in the UK (when Dutch type medicines are banned?) Sort it out, because even the YouTube clowns were as clear as mud!
I have a deep fryer which comes out probably every 2 months when I make some homemade chips from potatoes (not a frozen bag). Anything we eat is always bad for us if we cannot exercise self-control. There is a massive problem in the UK with obesity due to the infiltration of US culture promoting watching TV with buckets of popcorn or burgers, crisps etc. These indulgences should never ever be stopped completely, we just need to moderate how much we eat. Of course, it’s OK to binge once in a while, but we are responsible for our own actions and whilst I can see the influences that have grown into many of our population’s lack of control, it’s essentially down to us. Children need to be taught how to eat and what to eat and when. If we moderate our eating habits and behaviours there is absolutely no reason for any child to be overweight. Our children get their values and cues from us. We owe it to ourselves to look after our own health, and for the sake of our children we should keep in shape. Of course, government should take the lead and prevent manufacturers from flaunting the rules by offering larger sizes and saying that it’s two servings. That happened with the “sugary tax” on the fizzy drinks which are a key component of the health crisis in the UK.
Finally, do I recommend this Philips Air fryer? The answer is a reserved “yes”, but I think calling it frying is a nonsense. It will benefit those who don’t have a convection setting on their microwave. However, if you have a convection setting, I would not fork out 150 for this. Sorry!
This is an oddly bulbous-looking device which sits on your kitchen worksurface looking strangely oppressive. Because the light-up display is embedded and invisible when off, it ends up looking quite brutal, bordering on ugly, and aesthetically it doesn’t fit well in our kitchen at all.
Practically rather than aesthetically though, it’s a different matter. This is a really convenient air fryer for efficient, thorough and low-fat-high-taste cooking of a surprisingly wide range of foods. Of course you start with chips- who doesn’t start with chips?- but then move on to other veg, then once you’re confident with how it cooks food through, it doesn’t take long to get to cooking meat through it.
The results are consistently good, but not magical. Chips as an obvious example, are generally good, but it depends what you put in and what you’re looking to get out of it. For everyday oven chips, it’s convenient and comparatively healthy (kind of) but the result still tastes only as good as the brand you put in there. I’m a big fan of oily triple-cooked indulgent chips with a tantalising outer crispness, but of course, that’s essentially the opposite of how this air fryer handles the cooking.
The instruction manual is pretty much non-existent, telling you (in various languages) to install the app on your smartphone, and that’s about it. The app itself is fairly simple and no-frills, especially just a recipe book, smartly presented and packed with juicy-looking food photos.
We got the essential (i.e. most basic) version of the air fryer, with none of the optional accessories or extra capacity that more expensive versions have. That’s fine, except that there’s no way (that I’ve found) of telling the app which air fryer you’ve got. So it ends up showing a lot of recipes that require the larger capacity, or accessories you don’t have, in order to work- the delicious-looking beefburgers for example. It’s quite frustrating seeing a tantalising and well-photographed recipe card suggesting that you can home-cook something really tasty, only to find when you read the recipe that you’ve got the wrong version of the fryer for it. And this happens repeatedly, not just occasionally, on both everyday items and the more exotic and unusual dishes, which is further disappointing.
Air frying is healthy, and this is a well-made, sturdily built device up to the everyday standard and durability that you would expect from the Philips brand. But slight limitations with the app, slight issues with the non-intuitive interface, and the annoying feeling that Philips are trying to upsell you to a bigger model after you’ve already got the fryer, leave a funny taste in the mouth- alongside the dry, healthy but still relatively flavourful taste of the food you just cooked.
Several different air fryers were previously used.. There were varying degrees of success for each, one was DOA, and all but one was returned due to poor results. One used until very recently had a essential part replaced under guarantee due to excessive wear after limited use. It tends to collect congealed oil in inaccessible areas that are resistant to washing with a brush; that problem was non-existent with either of the two previous Philips machines. Consequently, it was recently decided to replace it despite it being barely one year old!
This “Philips Essential Air Fryer with Rapid Air Technology, 0.8Kg, 4.1L, 1400 Watt, 4 portions, Black, HD9252/91” is a major upgrade on the previous Philips models used in that it now features an LED control panel with digital temperature and timer controls rather than the mechanical controls of the earlier ones, touch buttons to select the program and others to amend the fixed settings if required. There is a certain level of noise that all air fryers produce, but Philips’ tend to be quieter than most – this being even quieter than older models – but there is some.
The programs available include chips, steaks, chicken drumsticks or portions, seafood, frozen snacks, vegetables and cakes and offers a recommended time and temperature for each that is considered ‘ideal’, most of which comprise a range of times at a specific temperature. However, personal or family preferences may differ and, if a food is preferred less or more well-cooked than Philips’ pre-set results produce, the settings can be easily altered. Once a combination of settings has been established in each instance, they can be noted for easy repetition.
Although not offered as a setting, it will roast potatoes and other hard vegetables extremely well – the ‘chips’ or ‘vegetables’ settings can be used as a starting point. Some potato varieties will roast very well but air fry less well as chips; traditional frying varieties such as Maris Piper or King Edwards will usually give the best results for chips although timings may vary among varieties. There are some recipes, often those covered in batter or use egg to bind ingredients, which can be part-cooked (generally 35-50% of the given time), cooled and frozen and, when later required for a meal, then cooked from frozen.
It was found after much experimentation that the best chips, using Maris Piper or King Edwards, were obtained by completely ignoring Philips suggestions. Peel if you wish, cut to a preferred size (8-10 mm thick), rinse well and dry in a clean microfibre towel (zero fluff or fibres), kitchen roll etc. Preheat the fryer at 200C for 3 minutes and spray the chips with oil. When the pre-heat completes, toss the chips into the pan and set at 200C and for at least 12 minutes (you may need 2-3 minutes extra according to preference or if potatoes are ‘new’). They will need to be shaken once or twice and you can spray with a little extra oil at that point for extra crispiness. Remove, season and serve. The results are far better and more immediate; you could easily do two batches in the same time as one if following Philips’ suggestions.
Philips do not provide a divider (nor is there provision for one) so that you could fry fish or grill a steak in one half and chips in the other, but there may be solutions. The basket drawer is very similar in design to that of older models but the inner basket has been slightly modified; there is now a cover that normally rests over its release button and the handle extends slightly further from the basket than those of the past. The shaping of the base of its outer basket remains as was, divided into four quadrants each in the shape of a shallow bowl, the intention being to create whirlpools of hot air within the machine for faster, more even and generally better cooking.
Capacity is quoted as 4.1 litres, generally large enough for 3 or 4 adults, but the pan should never be filled beyond the MAX line as those beyond may then burn while anything below could remain raw; that primarily applies to smaller things such as chips, battered or coated fish goujons, turkey bites and anything of roughly similar size. For larger items such as chicken portions, chops or steaks, a single layer will always work best.
Although labelled as a ‘fryer’, the machine can also be used as a mini-oven and grill as its interior space will allow a minimal or zero warm-up time and save money because heat isn’t being wasted in a large oven. It can potentially reduce the amount of oil used and consumed over time as some foods need none or a light spritz while chips and vegetables can be spritzed or tossed in a bowl with 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of oil. The inner and outer baskets are non-stick coated and dishwasher-safe. A nylon- or silicon-tipped food lifter or grill tongs will prove useful with some foods.
Philips no longer provide printed manual that includes recipes or cooking times for various foods as they had in the past but the Quick Start Guide and User Manual are available as downloads as is now becoming the norm. Philips’ NutriApp offers meal ideas, recommendations etc; unfortunately, this model is not one of those it specifically supports (nor was the previous model when it was purchased); there are others that are close enough but it may be included in due course. There are also a few ‘air fryer’ recipe books available to buy that may prove useful while many recipes intended for grill or oven can be cooked in the machine with few or no changes. This could be a second oven to use at Xmas or when multiple dishes need be cooked at different temperatures. It may also benefit the vegans or vegetarians in a family who would rather not eat food cooked in the same oven or under the same grill as used for meat and fish.
I have used a Tefal Actifry for a number of years. Well, not just one, but several different ones as they just never lasted very long before they went bang, or just stopped working. For some reason I had always stayed away from the Philips Air Fryer, perhaps solely because it didn’t automatically rotate the food. I have changed my mind and embraced the Philips technology.
The Airfryer is a counter top fan oven. The food is cooked in a basket that is pulled out from the bottom half of the Airfryer and can be removed from the main housing for easy cleaning (a quick soak and rub with a washing up brush is all that mine has needed).
It is a lightweight unit that is taller than an Actifry, but still relatively easy to store in a kitchen cupboard, so it doesn’t have to stay out on display, unless you want it to. It is stylish enough that it won’t look out of place.
Where this scores highly by comparison to an Actifry is in the variety of items you can cook inside – cakes, for example, as well as delicate things that an Actifry would just mash up in the cooking process. There isn’t a recipe book in the box or even very full explanations of how to use this, so go to the app for more details.
Unlike an Actifry, cooking food merely has hot air blown over it – there is no stirring mechanism incorporated. Where necessary, food needs to be manually stirred during the cooking process and this can be tricky if the basket has been filled to the maximum level and you are cooking chips, for example. Having said that, I found that oven chips came out better than they do if cooked in my fan oven (even though this is done on a specially designed tray) and small portions can (just about) come out well even if you forget to stir partway through (I have done so).
I like this Airfryer and the variety of items it can be used to cook is pretty amazing. It is a good item to accompany students to university digs or as a housewarming/engagement/wedding gift as well as a decent cooking option if you are having your kitchen refitted. I am a convert from an Actifry.
I have had a couple of air fryers before where they rotate and the lid opens, this Phillips Airfryer Essential (model HD9252/91) does neither of those things. It’s tall, slimline profile with a drawer that pulls open to reveal a non stick metal pan with a non stick metal basket with a handle that is fixed. It has a safety feature on the handle that stops anyone lifting the basket without sliding the clear plastic cover and depressing a button underneath. It’s quite a small button I found a little difficult to open with longer nails. It works via a powerful 1400 watt motor using rapid air technology to cook the food. It comes with a 2 year guarantee for peace of mind.
The control panel is touch control with with 7 presets and a keep warm function. I downloaded the app to pick a fairly easy recipe and decided to use make potato wedges using the Philip’s recipe on the app. It took 25 minutes and was surprisingly quiet and easy to use. Aside from the preset cooking functions there is a time option on the right with up and down arrows and temperature function on the left with up and down arrows then a simple press on the start control and off it goes. You can pause the air fryer to check on the food or change the time or temperature. It’s a little odd to not see the food as I’ve been used to, but I’m sure I’ll soon get used to it. This airfryer is a smaller more compact one than its bigger air fryer family. It holds 0.8kg which is 4.1 litres, so not tiny, but enough for a couple of adults though it’s listed as a four portion airfryer. I really like the fact the pan and basket are both dishwasher safe, and they fit nicely side by side in a standard size dishwasher (please see my photo). The potato wedges I cooked in the airfryer came out cooked and tasty, though the recipe said 160 degrees for 15 minutes then a further 10 minutes at 180 degrees, I would cook them at 180 for 20 minutes all the way through next time as I felt they could be crispier on the outside, but this all personal preference of course.
The app has lots of recipes to choose from, but I was a little surprised not to find this model not listed as the recipes use your model to tailor themselves to the airfryer, I hope it’s added soon as I can appreciate it’s a new model.
It’s a good quality build airfryer from a long standing company that’s straightforward to use and easy to keep clean and store either on a worktop or a cupboard. Please see my photos and video, I hope my review is of help to you, thank you for reading it.
OK, so I’ve used airfryers in the past, and always thought “meh”. They didn’t really make me fall in love with them…. until this one.
It was very tricky at first, because I started with the usual – chips/fries – and went with the settings set for a fan oven on the back of the packet. It stated 200C for 25 minutes. They were over done in 19 minutes. Crispy, but also pretty dry in the middle. Then I tried again, on 180C for 15 minutes. They were perfect. So yay! Quicker chips!.
Next I tried chicken goujons. It stated 180C for 15 minutes on the instructions. Just like the chips, they were crispy on the outside and hella dry in the middle. So I reckon 12-13 minutes would suffice.
When I played with the onboard settings, there is one for frozen chips, which puts it at 200C for 23 minutes. As the above experiment showed, this is way too high.
There are presets for Frozen chips, fresh cut chips, muffins, chicken, steak, fish, vegetables, and a warming one. However, these are purely guesses as the MASSIVE con against this (although I couldn’t bear to knock a star off):
The lack of DECENT instructions. What is there is pointless, and there is a small set of pictures to follow, which are worse than some flatpack instructions I’ve seen. Luckily, it’s easy enough to figure out how to use it. My main issue is cleaning (it has pics of a cloth wiping round, and I THINK the cage and drawer are dishwasher safe), and more importantly the first use “burn off”. Most appliances I’ve ever used tell you to run the appliance on a certain setting for a certain amount of time to burn off any smells or residues, ESPECIALLY anything relating to food prep. But this doesn’t say anything. Which is a worry. But just wipe it over inside and out with a clean damp cloth, dry it, then run it at 200C for 15 minutes then allow to cool and it will probably be ok (there’s definitely a noticeable odour on first use).
Overall I’m wowed by this as it cooks things faster and more evenly than any other I’ve used. The basket is huge, and could probably fit a small whole chicken in it, or enough chips to feed a small army. It’s very non-stick so far.
But if anyone from Philips is reading this… sort your instructions out please!
I’ve got a manual air fryer that I bought on offer and was a fraction of the price of this but it doesn’t have as many features.
This air fryer has 7 pre set programmes and a keep warm function which is the handiest thing in our house.
The basket is the same size as my old one but the fill line on this one is about half a centimeter from the top. You don’t need much oil if any at all and if I do use it I use the one cal spray.
I like the fact that it’s digital and has a countdown warming timer.
The build and plastic quality is excellent.
You can literally cook virtually anything in it. Meat, pies veg, cakes fish fingers fish, toast, sausages etc etc
My son doesn’t cook anything in his conventional oven anymore.
You can also buy accessory packs to make cakes and toast and other things in it.
To clean, all you need to do is unclip the basket and wash that and clean the drawer under the basket it’s really easy.
There’s only two issues that I can find and they are that the instructions are abysmal in fact worse than that. Also as you can see in the video that when you pull the drawer the whole machine comes with it. You need to push on the unit whilst pulling the drawer. It’s not a big deal but might annoy some buyers.
Overall I’m super happy as we needed two and I was recently attempting to get my old one with the paddle clean again to use. I think the drawer type are far better by the way.
This is quite an expensive machine but it does have features that cheaper machines don’t. It’s a good machine if you can pay the money and don’t mind the drawer being stiff.
I think it’s still worth 5 stars though as it’ll revolutionise the way you cook every day.
