As with all Phillips hue products, great quality and easy to set up and set up to Google assistants and Alexa etc

Update to my first review, below…

I bought a second Philips smart bulb, this time a bayonet fitting rated at 15.5 LED (100w equivalent) for my main living room ceiling light. This is a room that does not receive much quality daylight and so a bulb is required for most days.

I have to say that I was overwhelmed by the quality of this Philips 15.5 LED bulb. The light it gives off is whiter and clearer, and it is far more powerful than the original 100w equivalent LED that it has replaced. After checking, this Philips bulb has a higher lumen value which, naturally, affects the light output. Indeed, it is so much brighter that I have it set dimmed by 10% and it is still much brighter than my old LED in that position.

Obviously, the bulb linked to Alexa seamlessly and, whilst I still feel these Philips smart bulbs are over-priced, given the huge improvement to my room’s lighting I am glad I invested in this bulb.

    Original review follows…

A Philips smart bulb rated at 9w LED (equivalent to 75w).

This is a neatly designed bulb that fits a lamp perfectly. The light itself is very bright when on full, but it is a warm light, rather than a cold one, which is ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.

Setting up with my Alexa Echo was simple. First download the Philips app as per the instructions and then link the bulb to the Alexa app. Job done, and only took a few minutes. Alexa controls the lamp now with no issues at all, on or off, increase or decrease brightness as required.

My only real issue with this product is the price, it is far too expensive for what it does, especially when the market is now flood with much cheaper smart bulbs that do the same (and more). They might be a little more complex to set up as smart bulbs with Alexa but the results are the same. If the Philips bulbs were more competitively priced I would certainly buy a lot more but, at the moment, I would be wary of continually spending so much money on a 9w LED smart bulb.

I already had 7 hue bulbs I just ordered more so that I can have a full house of hue bulbs. I’ve had the first set I bought for 4 years and they’re still going strong. More expensive than other copies but these are the original, and in my opinion, the best smart lighting bulbs you can get.

I’m not that technically minded and was a bit nervous to set this device up but it was fairly easy and I messed about with it and got the hang of setting it up pretty fast. Alexa didn’t recognise the bulb the first time so I factory reset it which is fairly easy to find in settings and the Echo picked the bulb up 2nd time around. Don’t be afraid to mess about on the Philips Hue App it’s fairly easy to get the hang of it and I consider myself useless when it comes to stuff like this. Would definitely buy again.

We have colour Phillips lights in other rooms, but had two ambience white Phillips lights in the living room which were too dull. Buying this set of two has brought clear bright light back into our living room when we need it, just ask for the light to be white.

We have B22s in our house, so perfect addition. Got them in a bundle with a remote for 49, so great price and quite convenient with the remote.

If you’re familiar with the ecosystem, nothing more to say, as good as every other Hue.
If you’re new, it’s a great way to get started with smart home accessories. You’ll need the hub though. But other than that, highly recommended

These are expensive compared with unbranded alternatives, but I’d have connection issues regularly with the cheaper versions, so I though I’d try Phillips.

Given these are 5x the price, I’d hoped they’d take some pain away. Connecting with the Phillips Hue app was easy.

Then getting them assigned to a particular Alexa device was as easy as saying “Alexa, find discoverable devices.”.

Well, it was if I only needed to do this once. Twice it lost the connection after a few hours.

Third time was the charm and since then, everything has been fine.

Great lights. If they stop responding go into Bluetooth settings on your device and unpair then re add in the app. Phillips don’t tell you this.

Having now got a bridge over never had these issues but running lots of these bulbs without a bridge can just need up a bit so I was finding every few weeks I would have to re pair a light.

Excellent bulbs lots of fun. App great. Recommend a bridge even though these are Bluetooth. But you can work up to the bridge.

I’ve tried various smart lighting solutions and Hue continues to be the best option if you don’t want to rewire your house. I bought these as additional bulbs for my system and they’re great. Vibrant colours and bright enough for accent lighting.

I like the concept and the coloured themes you can set up. The automation for timings on and off, light shows are fun and useful.

Problem is the cost with purchasing a hub and then you are trapped.

The bulb advertised HomeKit compatibility and Bluetooth, which I thought meant the bulb could be controlled by HomeKit without a Philips Hue Bridge using the HomeKit hub of an Apple TV with its Bluetooth.

However, this is not the case. The Bluetooth functionality is only for a proprietary app and can’t even be used with Homebridge, requiring the Philips Hue Bridge for HomeKit, another 30-40.

Given a Hue Bridge, it works well with HomeKit. I can control the light with Siri and HomeKit automations, as well as using HomeKit adaptive lighting to automatically change the tint over time.

Brightness is not what a normal light of the same ‘equivalent’ wattage produces, but it’s sufficient. In the evening I drop it to 80% brightness and also use it as a night light in the bedroom at a few percent brightness — for that it works very well.

Advertises Bluetooth and HomeKit, but they can’t be combined

Good quality and colour of light, brightness is excellent, not overstated. They dim well when using the app, don’t put them on a dimmer switch. Bluetooth connects well and in my house I can connect with a light on the ground floor whilst sitting in the 3rd floor loft room. They connect well to WiFi and integrate with Alexa, so they can be voice controlled and on a schedule without a specialist hub. I got mine when they were on sale, as they are an expensive bulb.

I think they have changed the listing of what I purchased. Mine were 9W and 806 lumen. Definitely giving out that level of brightness and as bright as many bulbs that “claim” 1100 lumen.

I got these cause I got them free with EDF I purchased more when I moved because I needed 4 more for other places. I recommend if you got sick of having to get up and turn the light off after you got into bed. not only that you wont have to replace them if ever. so its worth the money, its easy to connect to your phone and alexa

I have been assembling my HomeKit based ‘smart home’ components for a number of years, and these bulbs are a mainstay of my setup.

The bulbs work best paired with motion sensors to enable the automation of light actions around your house.

The software is infuriating at times, and smart homes can be hard if people in your household are not tech savvy, as smart should be read as automated, which does not fit with the simplicity of pushing a wall switch and the light comes on. With perseverance though, these things are very cool.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIn terms of the bulb itself, these are typical high quality smart bulbs. Very natural warm white (if a little dim) and low power draw. The shape is very conventional so will fit in any socket, and Alexa integration works as expected, with voice commands to dim and toggle the light operating correctly.

With the addition of Bluetooth to Hue, you don’t necessarily need a hub to drive the lights anymore if you’re using Alexa. However, the reliability when using Bluetooth mode is frankly awful. They want to lose connection and then will never reconnect even after a power cycle. Worse yet, the firmware some bulbs ship with require a hub to reset the bulb so if your Bluetooth is causing major issues and you don’t have a hub, you’re screwed. So first thing you have to do is download the Hue Bluetooth app on your phone and update the bulbs. After that, they’ll work perfectly and be very reliable with the benefit of being resettable without a hub.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIt’s difficult to show off the variation of colours that Philips Hue can achieve, but I’ve added a few pics to show how vibrant it is.

If you just wanted one bulb, you can control this from the Philips Hue Bluetooth app and even one bulb makes a big difference to the atmosphere of your room. I have a few bulbs in my room and with the click of a button my white walls can be come cream or even whiter with the energise setting.

If you’re just dipping you toe into Philips Hue this would be a good start, but when you see how good it is, you will soon want to expand your collection.

If you have (or get the home hub) you can set your light to come on at random intervals, mimic a sunrise and sunset, or follow a pattern, you can even add the dimmer / button to your light which is magnetic and attaches to a metal bed frame (excellent when you cannot be bothered to get out of bed to turn the light/s off.

Overall a great smart bulb that is energy efficient and bright enough to use in a desk or floor lamp as well as wall and ceiling lights.

Paid around 45 and love it so far. The full rrp price can’t be justified but the Philips hue ecosystem is by far the most reliable. I’m hooked that’s all I know. Got 2 colour and 3 white right now and it’s working perfect.
