I bought this for my daughter’s birthday. She thinks it is amazing and says you do wake up totally refreshed.
Great product, I use it as bed side lamp to fell asleep and wake up and it’s really helpful.
Light intensity gradually brighten, found it very helpful especially during winter time
Definitely a better way to waken up in the morning, light starts of slightly red and gradually gets brighter and brighter. I have mine set so the radio comes on at a certain time again it gradually gets louder also.
I had an older one before for years and when it died I had to get another one couldn’t go back to an ordinary alarm again. I feel so much better getting wakened this way. They are a bit pricey but worth it.
I got this for my husband for Valentine’s Day and he is finding it makes for a much less abrupt waking experience. Overall, very happy with this light!
Still a bit undecided as it has lots of features that you may not need so a cheaper one might be more suitable. I wake to the birdsong option but find that the buttons I need to touch to stop it are on the rim of the light and I find it easy to touch the wrong one so I have to get up and look at the top and the side. I like being able to leave two different alarms preset. It does take up a lot of room on the bedside table.
I think I will get more used to it hence the four stars but I needed to unplug it the other day to move some furniture and have not rushed to set it back up again. I live in a remote area so I knew I would not be able to use the radio. Sorry if this sounds a bit negative as I am glad I bought it.
It was relatively easy to set up. The first time using it, it woke me up so gently and slowly that I didn’t even realise I was waking up. It was amazing, highly recommend. Makes a good lamp too.
I purchased this as a gift for my Daughter which she requested and she is delighted with it and it does exactly what she expected it to do.
Best way to wake up in the morning! I have tried cheaper models that didnt work. Very easy to use and great at getting me up on time
I bought this to replace a trusty earlier version of this kind of wake-up system from Philips – which had lasted 15 years. Once I finally got this current unit working, I like its light options and have set it up to give me different light and radio options in the morning and late evening. It is relatively heavy, so it will be difficult to accidentally knock to the floor. It allows you to charge your phone while you sleep. FM radio is not ideal. However, it is far from intuitive in setting up the programmes you want – and, even when it is set up, reaching out to shut the radio down, or to tweak the brightness up or down, requires you to feel your way along little bumps at the top of the unit, and I’m still making mistakes months after buying this. I’m pretty experienced with making new software work, but I have to report that it took me around four days of experimentation before I had it programmed the way I wanted and, on a couple of occasions when I have wanted to re-programme it, I had to go back to the manual to remind myself what to do. I bought this knowing that there would be problems along these lines because I couldn’t see a quality alternative that I liked. So, I’m happy with the end product, but it is seriously unforgiving in setup.
1. Absolutely love this product.
2. Best investment in 2020.
3. I wake up immediately and relaxed.
4. Helps with season depression.
5. Wakes me up gently.
6. Never going without it.
This is a great alarm, I had trouble waking up in the morning as I’m a terrible morning person, this really helps to wake me up gently with the gradual light. Nice sounds of birds or music. I’m very happy with my purchase.
I trialled this from. A friend before deciding if I wanted a lumie, I loved it so much I chose the smart sleep over the lumie.
Likes:
Sunset function timer
Wake up sounds
2 alarm clocks
Brightness settings
Alarm clock sound choices
Built in radio (not dab unfortunately)
Certified SAD device
Clock display
Dimmed (red) light touch function if waking up in the middle of the night
Sturdy build
Dislikes
Size it takes up on my night stand
And that’s it!
Recommended, Ps I bought the lumie too and the build quality is very lightweight and feels a little less substantial than this, but it’s in my kitchen to keep the SAD at bay as I leave my bedroom as the light on it is definitely brighter.

This light is an amazing bit of kit. The sounds are super cool and the light has 20 different levels of brightness. The mode that plays white noise and slowly dims the light over a chosen time is absolutely magic at helping you drift off at night, the wife and I love it!
I don’t typically leave reviews, but I felt I needed to for this product as it’s been really helpful in the last month we’ve had it. Getting out of bed in the winter is always a bit of a struggle when your bed is comfortable and the room is dark, but this has helped us considerably feel more awake and made it easier to get out of bed at a reasonable time.
The thing I like about this light overall is how gradually it starts with the light. I’ve purchased cheaper lights in the past and had to return them as they turn on the light to suddenly and it jolts you awake. This is the first one I’ve found that the light is super gradual and makes the wakeup process more natural.
As the other reviewers have said, the buttons are a bit weird, but knowing that I just made sure to follow the manual and make sure it was set up correctly the first time, and I’m making sure to keep the manual incase I need to adjust it.

This lamp is just what I was looking for. Ive always struggled to wake up in the dark. Setup is easy by following the step by step guide. I use the radio to wake up to. Sound quality is very good for an alarm clock. The light comes on very very gently. A dark orange glow which is lovely. There is no ‘click’ when the light comes on which could be irritating. Full brightness isn’t like having a main light on but is a soft light which is kind on the eyes.
Getting out of bed is now so much easier for me. I wouldn’t be without it.
It is nice to wake up in a light room instead of a dark one through winter so that’s been a nice positive, however the light itself doesn’t wake me up and I am a light sleeper, the noises could be better you can choose between a couple of artifical sounding piano pieces or birds, id love a beach wave wake up, anyway, I am finding that im not lying starting at the ceiling for half hour only 15 mins now so thats been great and I do feel more energised in the morning, the sunset function I dont use due to shift patterns with the husband but I’ve let the kids use it and my son almost fell asleep on my bed doing so and usually he likes to be in his bed reading …. its alot of money considering there’s some things that could be better I was fortunate to get it when it was 90 rather than 150

Game changer, makes me wake up with so much more energy
I’m a fan of this thing. While it won’t always make waking up hassle-free, it is certainly less anxiety-inducing than a regular alarm clock or phone alarm.
Pros:
* The light up feature is fantastic and has totally changed the way I wake up in the morning. It shifts from a dim red at the darkest to a bright warm white color at the brightest.
* It looks fairly stylish, and the build quality is very good, it feels like it’ll be able to outlast a nuclear war with ease
* The clock display isn’t too bright, so it doesn’t light up the room at night, but it’s still easily visible
Cons:
* The user interface was not well thought out at all. The buttons are very hard to find by touch (and sometimes by sight!). I had to resort to putting blobs of bluetack on my most used buttons so I could tell them apart from the others.
* The tap function is very inconsistent. One night you might be wailing away on the top of the alarm for ages before the night-light mode turns on, the next morning you might gently brush it with your fingers trying to find the alarm off button and accidentally snooze the alarm. I thought I’d eventually get used to it, but I have almost as much trouble with it as I did when I bought the alarm two years ago.
* The radio gets very poor reception. I tried it in a city and got a handful of slightly fuzzy sounding channels, in the countryside you’ll be lucky to get a single one. I gave up in the end and just chopped the antenna off
* No internal clock battery backup: if you have a power cut the clock will last an hour or two before losing what time it is and needing to be set again. That means that if you have an alarm set and there’s a long enough power cut during the night it’s entirely possible you’ll wake up far later than intended to see a flashing “12:00” display on the clock. Not great when many cheaper alarm clocks can be switched off almost indefinitely and still recall the time on booting back up
I was torn between this and the Lumie clock as there were good and bad reviews for both. Glad I went with this one in the end however –
Things I like:
– Instructions are easy to follow
– Being able to activate the lamp just by tapping it
– Very bright with settings for sunrise and sunset
– being able to set 2 alarms
Things that could be improved:
– Sound quality isn’t amazing but I don’t mind as using it mostly for the light
– would be nice to be able to set a time for different days of the week but I haven’t found any light alarm that will do this.
Would recommend overall
So easy to use and really works. During COVID I hadn’t been sleeping or waking up on time. This has regulated my sleep!
I spent a long time doing the research for this type of alarm clock and oh boy am I glad I did. This is incredible, I’ve had it for about six months now and it had made all other alarm clocks for myself and my fianc completely redundant. You really do feel refreshed when you wake up with this alarm clock. The first couple of weeks you will have to fine tune it to yourself and what suit you best, but honestly I see that as a huge upside to this product because it allows you the ability to fine tune it where I know many others do not.
The price may be putting you off this alarm clock, but honestly you put this next to similar others and I can see how this would win each time.
Highly recommend, if you are doing the research for a SAD alarm clock which has a radio then get this one, we haven’t had any issues with this at all and I cannot commend it enough.

Absolutely love this purchase , the light to help you fall asleep which gradually dims is brilliant , would highly recommend .
This was a considered purchase some months ago, but I am SO glad I bought it.
My preferred alarm sound is the birdsong. What a lovely sound to wake up to! It’s a much better start to any day than waking up from deep sleep to a jarring alarm clock!
I don’t always sleep too well at night, but having the slow ‘dawn’ of the light ensures that I always wake up gently. In fact, I’m normally awake and semi-conscious before the actual alarm sound goes off… even on days when I’m not working and haven’t set the alarm, I now wake refreshed at a similar time every day.
I found this particularly valuable during the long winter nights, to help wake me up when it was still pitch black outside. But I still use the clock now, even though dawn outside is breaking much earlier.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this clock.

It’s a good alarm clock, easy to set up, love the light function, helps wake you up on those dark mornings, sound is fine, looks stylish, just wish the buttons were a bit easier to find without having to get so close to see them!
This product is amazing, I cant say enough good things about it. I was skeptical that it would make a difference but makes waking up so much easier and better. I will never go back to using a normal alarm again. Very easy to use once you get the hang of it. Going to sleep sounds and sunset dimming are also great, I use it every night.
Fue un regalo y estn encantados!! Te permite un despertar ms lento.
It does what it says ok the pack and I love all the functions. It’s bright enough to use as reading lamp as well. My sister loved it so much, she bought one as well and we’re getting one for my mum, too!
Fantastic purchase. This lamp fits 2 purposes in our household. First, it enables a very natural and stress-free wake-up, unlike a classic alarm clock. Second, the different brightness settings enhance different moods and bed-activities.
It does the job!! I wake up every day with the light and bird song and it’s really more relaxing and less brutal than the awful phone alarm.
Easy to use
I also like the 30min sunset that helps me to fall asleep.
I have been using this product for over 6 months now, and I must say, it’s been a delight. I usually am a heavy sleeper, so I was a bit worried about the idea of light waking you, but the brightness with the gentle sounds really do the trick! Even if I wake up laying on the side facing away from the light. The menu might be a bit confusing when you first purchase it, but you figure it out really quickly. No, it doesn’t have cyclic alarms, but because you see it’s big facade daily with the time displayed at all times, it’s very easy to remember to put it back on. Also, you can store your preferred times on two settings, so you can just click a button to immediately re-use the last time setting.
Highly recommend as a replacement to your bedside light and to your phone’s nasty alarm sounds
I’m not a morning person, if you’re reading this review you’re probably not either. On top of that, my dearest wife can only sleep in complete darkness, so waking up in winter is damn difficult for me. This thing helps me to wake up so much fresher. It also helped me to stabilise my sleeping pattern.
It’s not without some design quirks – reaching to tap the top of the lamp to snooze the sound (but not the light) can be challenging, but it’s not a deal-breaker. Given it’s performance, overall it’s worth more than the price I paid. It looks nice too. Recommended!

Easy to use, gentle birds tweeting at the end of the sunrise (when alarm actually set for). Love the sunset which can be set from 15mins to an hour. Can set it then read in bed till it slowly gets dark then drift of. So nice not to be woken by alarm and means we don’t have to bring our phones into the bedroom. Sleep so important so this is a no brainer!!
I was not sure this light and a bit of bird calling would wake me up. I have been supprised at how effective it is and how much nicer it is to wake up with the light increasing slowly. It is a lovely way to start the day.
Would definitely recommend. After reading lots of varied reviews I decided to take a chance and I don’t regret it.
The light gradually comes on about half an hour before the alarm and it is much better than waking up to a sudden loud alarm.
You can choose your wake up alarm sound. The morning birds tweeting and cows moo-ing is my favourite. Don’t hesitate to try it.
This has revolutionised my waking pattern; in the depths of winter, to wake up and it not be pitch black to the gentle cowbell and mooing (one of the sounds I chose, others include bird tweets and a plinky plonky one, or the radio). I love this product so much that I’ve recommended it to all my friends and family. I don’t wake up bleary-eyed or grumpy!
On the first night I woke up feeling like someone was shining a torch in my face.
Now I just feel like the sun is in my room each morning, till I realise it’s still dark outside.
Don’t hesitate buy this product it works
Up until now I’d been using a Lumie Starter 30 sunrise alarm which to be fair has been pretty good and not really let me down. My main gripe with that particular sunrise alarm was the alarm sound itself was quite a loud and aggressive beeping noise which defeated the object of being gradually woken up by the light! Also, this alarm had a filament light bulb inside it which meant the lamp got very hot after it had been on for a while.
I’d been looking around at replacement wake up lamps for a while and noticed the Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clocks. I added it to my wish list a few months back but at the time I felt they were quite expensive and didn’t know if it would be a worthwhile upgrade over what I already had.
Recently the Philips Wake-up Light Alarm Clock model HF3531/01 (7 Natural Sounds & Radio Function version) popped up on Amazon’s daily deals page considerably cheaper than normal and I simply couldn’t resist and ended up purchasing one.
After unpacking the alarm clock it immediately looked and felt leagues above the Lumie Starter 30 than it was due to replace. Just the overall weight and finish of the product appeared to have a much better build quality than the Lumie. Philips generally make good quality products and this seems no different in that regard.
Plugging in and setting up the time and alarm was really straightforward and the instructions are easy to follow. The alarm has a lot of buttons on it (4 touch sensitive on the front, 1 touch sensitive button on the top section and 9 depressable buttons around the top/outside edge) so it is highly advisable to read the manual to understand what they all do. I generally like to figure things out myself and avoid reading manuals if I can but even I had to revert back to the manual after setting up the time on this one!
This alarm has 7 natural sounds varying from birds chirping to relaxing melodies.. there’s even one with a cow mooing in the background! With very little effort I was able to find a video on YouTube with someone demonstrating the different sounds this alarm clock makes – I would highly recommend checking that out if you are considering purchasing one. I guess a lot of these sounds may not be to some people’s tastes and because they are also very subtle I suspect that really heavy sleeper’s may not get woken up by them.
There is a built FM radio on this particular model. I don’t use that to wake up to but have used it a couple of times just to listen to the radio in the evening etc. It’s only an FM radio though and for the price point it would have been really nice to have DAB radio on it as well.
It has a USB charging port on the back which is useful for charging devices such as mobile phones. I don’t leave devices charging overnight myself but the option is there with this clock. It’s only a USB charging port though and cannot be used to stream music from your device etc.
If I have one criticism with this device it’s the buttons around the outside edge and top. Whilst it’s nice to have lots of buttons to do various things it really ends up being a negative on this device, mainly due to poor placement than anything else. When the alarm goes off in the morning I want to be able to simply turn it off and get up. The problem with this alarm is that there are so many buttons and only one of them seems to properly turn the alarm off. If you touch the top of the alarm clock whilst trying to find the right button it ends up snoozing the alarm for 9 minutes.. Argh!!! I did this several times for the first few days and to be fair it was quite infuriating – especially because I know which button I needed to press when I’m 100% compos mentis!
I managed to conjure up a bit of a janky solution to the problem which was to stick some small self-adhesive plastic feet on the turn off alarm and light buttons which means the buttons are now really easy to find first thing in the morning when I’m half asleep. I attached a picture with the buttons stuck on to demonstrate what I mean. It works but it’s not great that I’ve had to to botch my new alarm clock to make it more morning-friendly!
It’s a great light up alarm from Philips but the button placement really lets it down. I’m really happy with it now that I’ve fixed the button issue for myself though.
Pros:
– Decent build quality and aesthetically pleasing to look at
– Wake up to one of 7 natural alarm sounds or FM radio
– Light ranges from dim red to VERY bright
– USB charging port on the rear for mobile phones etc.
– Light does not get hot after being on for a while
Cons:
– Expensive
– A lot of buttons (perhaps too many!) which make the alarm difficult to turn off when you’re half asleep
– Radio is FM only and would have been much better if there was DAB too

Really like how this alarm wakes you up gradually by slowly lighting the room like a sunrise and also dims at night gradually making you feel sleepy before it goes out. The buttons are quite close together so sometimes you hit the wrong button. Has a selection of nice relaxing nature sounds.
It’s great – does what it’s supposed to do with one exception… It does not allow you to choose the days of the week (or even “weekday” or “weekend”) in the alarm settings. I almost take it for granted that all alarm devices support this functionality (most I’ve come across include individual day selection). Philips solution is to provide two alarm settings you can manually choose between. I’d have been less disappointed at a significantly lower price.

Love it, definitely takes the edge off waking up in the dark in the mornings.
REVIEW:
So I was lucky to get this lovely Phillips light alarm clock I’ve been using it since Sunday and what a difference it makes to my morning! I was woke up this morning via alarm and it didn’t feel good… but waking up with this light on a morning is gentle and warming. Even the sleep button (which gives you selected times to get ready for bed and then projects a sunset) is an amazing way to drift off. 100% would recommend!!
2 Alarm Times
Light comes on gradually over 30m (adjustable)
Light on max brightness lights medium double bedroom almost as bright as single light bulb hanging from ceiling.
Alarm volume and max brightness fully adjustable from 0 to 20
Clock can be dimmed or off at nigh
Still learning all the functions but is very helpful with how darl mornings at in the winte
I love this sunrise alarm, I was sceptical of its abilities but I have woken and arisen on the first alarm if not before. Have pressed snooze once.. Glowing
This alarm is amazing, my new year’s resolution is to start my day earlier. This has totally changed the way I wake up in the morning. Previously, using my phone alarm, my 6am start easily became 7am. The first time I used this I was woken gently by the light 8 minutes before the time I wanted to be up. The glow from it is warm and gradual, it was a much more pleasant experience than the usual winter darkness of 6am with a regular alarm clock. I would definitely recommend this.
Brilliant. This is the very best way to wake up. I will never go back to using my mobile phone to wake up again! This really does help you to wake up in a better, happier way.
Only reason for not giving five stars is that the buttons don’t offer enough tactile feedback so it’s hard to know which button you’re pressing, especially when reaching over in the dark at night or early in the morning when you’re half asleep. This issue is apparent with both the touch buttons on the front and the physical buttons around the edges. They could have designed this better.
These are only small issues. Overall it’s a brilliant invention and a nice design that looks nice and subtle at the side of my bed. I’ve recommended this product to a few friends already.
It has some nice wake up sounds to accompany the wake up light. It also has a night light feature with sleep timer.
This is an excellent product, it is perfect for waking up on those cold dark mornings, especially with the tweeting birds feels like summer is back again.

I was a little sceptical in trying this— I don’t wake up too easily, but was suggested this by a relative. Funnily enough, it actually works. I’m finding it far easier to rouse in the morning, from the light alone. I’m often wide awake before the sound even starts playing.
The snooze function is great as it leaves the light on but kills the noise! I like the sleep function as well – the wave sounds are really soothing as I’m trying to get to sleep…and the gradual decrease in light is great too.
I find that I feel more ready to get out of bed when I wake up and it really does give off a lot of light at full intensity.
I use it as a nightlight sometimes as well, or as an extra lamp in my room when I’m getting ready in the morning.
The only issue I have is not at all with the product but with my own stupidity…as I didn’t think about the fact that my puppy would wake up with the light earlier and then try to wake me up too, so at first she kept waking me before the alarm! Something to think about if you have a pet who sleeps in your room!!

At this time of year anything to help on the dark mornings is worth a try. This does what it’s supposed to do very well. It brightens from red to yellow to white light in a way that works well. The sound alarm comes on quietly. It’s really nice. That’s what I bought it for. I like it so much I bought a second as a present.
So why not five stars-well, it’s really expensive.
It’s well built and solid and nice. But the buttons are a wee bit fiddly and the instructions not particularly intuitive. The radio isn’t a great radio, but that’s not what I bought it for.
For this price, it should really be better quality sound and at least four out of five for user friendliness. Current trends suggest that at this price it should probably be voice activated.
As a lamp it’s really good. As an alarm it’s really good.
Sort out the rest and it could be fantastic.

I have had the previous model of this clock/radio/light alarm for several years. The first one suffered from a bit of an electrical mishap when a heater on the same ring main fused and must have created a surge that left it a bit quirky. Not the fault of the product, I hasten to add, but I was pleased to get hold of this incarnation to see what had been improved.
Not much is the simple answer – a very good product lightly tweaked really. There’s a new red low-level nightlight feature added which I do like rather a lot as it doesn’t kill my night vision when my wife turns it on at night. But why oh why did Philips continue with the FM radio without introducing a DAB tuner? It would have elevated this so much and cost only a little more.
As it is with the FM radio it sounds very good for its size but really the main selling point is the adjustable light levels and ability to wake up slowly to a gradually illuminating room which – in these dark months – is the least unpleasant way to do it!
I suffer baddly in the winter with how dark it is. This alarm clock helps my morning go a little smoother and I generally wake up feeling refreshed and ready to do life. I’ve had it about a year now.
The light wakes me up gently and I’m usually awake 5-10 mins before my alarm is due to go off, so I get a nice 5 min snooze before I have to get up.
I also like blasting the light up to 20 if I’m feeling extra groggy and my brain gets the message that it’s time to get up. I got it on offer for 80. Felt ridiculous at the time but I love it!!!
Great product, easy to use I looked at many cheaper ones but glad I went for this one. No more dark mornings
he sunlight feature is lovely, the sounds for waking up can be annoying but bearable. The sunset feature is also good.
This wake up light has already made it easier to get up on the dark mornings and I’ve only had it a couple of weeks. Getting up at 6am in the winter is never pleasant, but the light wakes me gently, meaning no more being jolted awake when the alarm goes off. The only reason I haven’t given it 5 stars is the price; It’s a clock radio with a light on a timer, I’m not sure why they need to charge 149!
This Philips is smart and emits good light with a nice feature set plus I bought it when selling for less.
Ways to improve:
– Separate alarm off button
– DAB to replace FM radio
– Programmable alarm schedule for weekday/weekend rather than simply two alarm times (my other DAB alarm can do this)
– It has a USB socket just for charging so make it possible to upload a MP3 alarm sound file.
Very bright but adjustable, I’d rather not look at it when it’s on. Lights up the whole room though which is good. It won’t wake you up reliably but in my opinion it helps. I use it along with my phone alarm. The to sleep feature is great and the sounds are good. A little bit of bluetack or something helps you find the centre buttons at the top as they are hard to find without another light on.

This is a really well made product from Philips, with a very natural and warm multiple stage light and soothing sounds to wake you up. I’ve never been one to bother with the sounds of waves, or other “white noise”, and I didn’t really get any benefit from these sounds here, but I can see why they’d be good for certain people, and they are of good quality.
The speakers are good and the sounds are pleasant. I can’t stand most of the trash alarm choices included in most mobile phones, so whilst I don’t listen to soothing sounds to fall asleep, I do appreciate soft notes to gently bring you put of sleep. Prior to this I used the very good ‘Bedtime’ app on iPhone, which has a very nice selection of soft sounds, and to be honest I still use that. I’d say that if you’re not one to wake upon having some light on your face and have some good choices of gentle alarm music/sounds, then there’s not really much worth shelling out this kind of money for. For people with sleeping conditions though, it’s a must buy.
I always slept with my curtains open but ended up on the ground floor at uni. I use the sunrise alarm to ease me out of bed in the morning and I recently started using the sunset feature to help me relax into sleep. Definitely worth it as it’s a multifunctional product radio, reading lamp and usb charger!!
So many modern gadgets are littered with blue, green, red LEDs which blink and stutter meaninglessly. Walk into my lounge at 4:00 a.m. and there are at least 50 leds bathing the room in electronic light. The router alone has about nine, and I have no idea what any of them mean other than the power is probably on. Turn off the lights in a hotel room and one’ll usually be faced with a bright red digital alarm, just inches from your pillow, with a display more than bright enough to destroy any sleep. First thing I do is always to pull the plug.
On the other hand, this Philips gadget not only has a dimmable time display, but for those of us who prefer real darkness when we are trying to sleep, you can dim it all the way down to completely off. Don’t worry, if you actually do want know the time during the night, you just wave a hand in the vicinity of the gadget, and the time display will glow for a few seconds just enough to read.
My only gripe with this gadget is that while the technical side is brilliant, the packaging is not without flaws. While the programming is done by a touch display on the front, which is fine, other controls are push buttons on the rim of the gadget, and while aesthetically pleasing, these are too subtle to be easily found even when wide awake in broad daylight, let alone at 05:30 a.m. when half asleep in a dark room.

Thanks to this Wake-up lamp I made the day of a couple friends of mine that had just got married. They are very happy of this present and I have been thinking that I should have kept for myself.
It is the perfect light and the perfect music to start your day. It’s like having the sun rising in your bedroom and you can choose the intensity and the kind of music or sound you want to go with it.
A ‘different’ alarm clock, and a very good one.
Excellent for my autistic daughter who has trouble sleeping and waking up in the mornings but we do have to turn the birdy tweet sound effects off because it can be to loud and be a little bit annoying but apart from that the clock is easy to set up and use and you can wake up in the winter dark mornings with sunshine in your bedroom and go to sleep in a bit of summer sunshine which helps my daughter to sleep more easily at night and wake up happy in the morning , we are so happy with the difference it makes to her life and her sleeping pattern , a great invention from a great brand from Philips ,construction is great as well and very robust , plus you can charge your iphone and ipad from it as well , its so practical .
In spite of this, if you need a gentle wake up, then this will do the job, regardless of whether you need birdsong or whale song to wake you up…
I’ve tried a multitude of different methods to try and force myself from betwixt my cocoon upon my alarm’s triggering – from mobile phone apps that require me to scan an NFC tag in my bathroom across the landing, to ones that require me to remember a sequence of colours or letters and replicate them. None of it worked when I realised they could be easily bypassed by rebooting my device.
When I came across this product, it hit me that instead of fighting my desire to lie in, I should work with it. To its credit, this alarm has ticked all of the boxes in that regard. By some miracle, I wake up feeling far more refreshed and more as though I’ve emerged naturally from my sleep at a time of my choosing.
“But why did you only give it 4 stars?” I hear you ask. Well, I’m not saying this product is perfect. Its main shortcoming is the price – just over 100, at the time I purchased it. You sit there and think what you could buy with 100. Having such an over-inflated price tag leaves the product open to a plethora of nit-picky criticism.
For example, the speakers aren’t great. I mean, you can hear them fine, but they aren’t crisp by any stretch of the imagination. That, coupled with the poor quality of the recordings, is the reason I chose not to use the nature sounds and instead chose to tune into my favourite FM radio station. Not even somebody with severe hearing impairments could be fooled into thinking those were actual birds chirping away on their bedside table. Besides which, I’m pleased by the fact that my alarm coincides with the news segment on the radio, giving me a news briefing first thing – something I’ve wanted ever since I found the briefing command on Google Assistant.
That segways into my next point rather nicely; FM radio. Are you serious? You can buy a cheap DAB radio for 20. Philips’ choice to go analogue with this product results in you being limited to local radio stations or those that broadcast across the country. It also means that you’ve got an unsightly wire aerial to deal with – no idea why this couldn’t have been built into the giant back-end of the unit which is reminiscent of an old CRT monitor.
I’d like to finish by stating the following: You could achieve everything this product offers & more by using an Android smartphone, a smart RGB light bulb and a bit of tinkering with an Android app such as Tasker. This not only comes in at a fraction of the price, but allows you to use custom recordings & access international / online-only radio through the Internet – that assuming you have an Internet Connection and aren’t reading this review etched into a stone tablet.
Shop smart, ladies & gentlemen.
The light itself doesn’t wake me up, the alarm does. However, I wake feeling MUCH better than i do from my phone alarm.
Whether the light affects you will vary greatly by individual – I don’t wake particularly easily.
No idea why people are saying its hard to use, or complaining about the buttons. It is very intuitive. The buttons around the sides feel good, and you get used to the positioning. The touch sensitive menu buttons are great, very responsive.
Overall it feels good quality, and looks very sleek.
Recent models feature a ‘midnight light’ when you tap the top. It turns on a dim red glow. Very handy.
I find it much harder to fall asleep again when its shining at me in the morning (turn brightness to full) – which is a big bonus. Especially in winter when its dark.
The sounds aren’t all that crisp – they sound like actual recordings that haven’t been touched up in a fancy studio.
But its an alarm, its never going to sound good when its waking you up at some early hour.
Good product.

This is quite a bit bigger than I thought it would be but it does such a lot with a radio , 7 natural sounds to give you a choice to wake up to in the morning with a coloured sunrise simulation wake up light that comes on gradually . A touch on light for those trips to the loo in the night, A dimming light and sound to send you off to sleep and the all important USB port for our faithful companion (mobile phone). This is one of those products that has been thought about a lot to fill all our needs before it came on the market, usually you always say ooh I wish it had this or this but for me it’s a good one.
I love this wake up light. I’ve seen other cheaper brands that are a fraction of the price but are a bit rubbish and don’t match the features and quality of this Philips light. With this model you have 7 natural sounds and the colour scheme goes from red to yellow. This USB charging port is really handy – even though you are losing a socket next to your bed you don’t need to worry if you’ve had to sacrifice your mobile phone or tablet charger as you can plug it directly into the light.
The instructions are all pretty easy to follow and I am happily using it as a reading light at bedtime also with the sunset feature being used after I’ve finished rading. I find getting up in the mornings far more easier with the light features and the natural sounds – bird chirping is my favourite (it sounds surprisingly realistic). It’s got a FM radio feature but I haven’t bothered with that yet.
Overall very happy. I’d rather spend the money on this Philips model than the bad experiences I’ve had with some of the more budgets lights that are out there.
Probably the finest alarm I’ve ever used. I do enjoy the light (good for reading) but I also enjoy the varied tones you get for a more gentle wake-up –I do enjoy the bird sounds.. don’t get much of those naturally in central London! (I must say that the wake-up lighting doesn’t appear to bother my pet cat, who is always a pain at 5am and so I have now decided to shut her in the kitchen most nights so she doesn’t bother my waking up!) The thing is super easy to use (including the touch screen) which is a bit of icing on the cake… oh and the radio part works fine, but I rarely use it. Am almost looking forward to waking up during the darker months of the year!
My husband is the prime user of this light , we have the first version of this and hes always liked the gentle wake up in the morning, this light however is a far superior version with soft sounds and a red to yellow sun , the design is so much better its easier to use has a touch screen for setting up plus buttons on the top . the radio gets good reception and sounds good with good tone.
I’ll be honest intitially I thought the Phillips wake up light and radio wasn’t doing anything of use.
It’s nice, modern and comes with varying lighting to simulate dawn and as the nights draw in I thought great it will keep me in a routine.
But hen I went away on the weekend and back to a traditional phone alarm and I actually missed the gentle wake up! Going back to a harsh fast alarm made me jerk up and instantly dopey where as the wake up clock allows for slow natural progressive wake up that leaves you feeling still refreshed after a good night sleep
Setting up the clock takes quite a bit of time and I urge anyone buying it to set it up where you are going to keep it because it’s plug operated so if you unplug it, you’ll lose your alarm timings and light settings etc. I thought it would be quite complicated but you set it with the touch screen buttons on the front rather than the buttons on top of the unit. It instantly brings up the time setting when you plug it in. To set an alarm, press the menu button, set the time and then press the Alarm 1 or 2 buttons on either side to activate them. You’ll really want to go through the sounds before setting an alarm because I know there are a few that would not wake me. The natural sounds like birds are very realistic and very clear and there are a few relaxing music numbers too. You can also set how quick you’d like the light to increase — taking up to 20 minutes and how bright you want it to go — it can go very bright so definitely worth trying beforehand! I like that there is a midnight light which is operated by a double tap on the top centre of the lamp but it only glows a dull red so while it’s easy on the eyes, is not sufficient to light a dark room. There is an option to put the main light on but it’s not something you can find easily in the dark unless very familiar with the buttons. I initially thought the fall asleep function was a snooze button but you need to tap the top of the alarm to snooze. The only way to switch the alarm off is by pressing the alarm button on the side which can be frustrating as none of the buttons really stand out so you have to feel for them.
I like the way the alarm operates in that it has that softer glow which becomes gradually brighter because it is so much easier on the eyes — especially in winter when it’s still so dark when waking up. The radio is fine if you have your favourite station because it doesn’t let you save your favourite channels — you can either scan manually for them or hold down the button to autoscan.
While I personally found the clock pretty self explanatory to set up, I can see people easily becoming quite frustrated and confused especially as the manual isn’t user-friendly combining a variety of languages on each page. There are so many different elements that it’s probably only worth buying if you know you’re going to use them and like the combination of features being rolled into one. I think there are some changes that could make it even better but I do really like it.
I have the previous version of this and really love it and so was very keen on getting my hands on the updated version.
Negatives first, the price, it is after all an alarm clock, so this is a big price.
The second negative is the instruction manual. At first I wished I’d left the thing in the box, the manual is such a nightmare.
However, after you have endured the instructions and eventually got used to the strange controls this is a lot of fun.
Whereas the older version that I have is essentially a slowly increasingly light 30 minutes before the alarm goes off, this is coloured to be like the sun coming up. It ranges from red to yellow as it simulates the sun coming up.
Thats not all it also has wake up sounds of nature, there a bit silly and I avoid them, a bit like having tweeting bird sounds to slowly wake you, more sophisticated than that but that’s the idea.
Like the older version you can vary the brightness, on the greatest setting its a bit like having the sun in your room.
Unlike the older one this has a good old fashioned radio.
Another cool feature is that as the the light dims in the room so does the display, not that its as big a problem as the older version.
Lastly, the device is a bit on the huge size, I have mine on the other side of the room, too in your face on the bedside table.
Its really complicated to set up. Ive set up plenty of digital clocks and never need the instructions but this clock is something else. Its so complicated and the instructions really arnt much help. They are in multi languages on the same page so you have to search for the right ones. Dont get this clock if you cant or you dont have someone who is good at setting these things up for you!
I had a light up alarm before and it definitely helped me wake up. I felt more awake after the gradual coming too the light provides. That clock died sadly and ive been missing this function. Its so nice to have it back. Im not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination and this really helps. I just feel more awake. Its much better to have my brain gently prodded awake gradually rather than shocked into life by sudden loud noise. I cant recommend a light up alarm highly enough.
This alarm has loads of buttons, one for each alarm (it has two) three for the light (on/off and up and down) another button for the fall asleep function, an fm radio button (no DAB) with up and down volume buttons. You can also tap it twice on the top and a low light comes on (very handy for nightly toilet trips, not bright enough to wake you up but light enough so you dont trip over a cat on the way back). It has a night go to sleep button which plays the sound you choose and dims the light to tell your brain its bedtime.
When the alarm goes off you can snooze it (it snoozes for 9 mins) by tapping it anywhere, the sound goes off but the light stays on. The thing that really really annoyed me was when i tried to switch the alarm off when it was mid snooze the alarm goes off but the light stays on. I have no idea why. If the light is part of the alarm and you switch the alarm off why doesnt the light go off? It took days of random annoying button presses to work out you have to switch off the light using the light button. Its not the stress i need when ive just got up! Now i know what to do its fine but it seems to be an unecessary annoyance in a quality product like this one.
The sounds are ok, not as varied as id hoped. For years we’ve had an ipod dock with something called ‘pure sounds’ on it and that had a huge sound library on it but theyve switched it off now sadly so it no longer works, but it rather spoilt us.
One thing i do find the go to sleep fiunction handy for is meditation, i find the gradually dimming light and wave noise very calming, which is handy when you suffer from anxiety.
This is a sizeable unit, the light is bright enough to light up the whole bedroom when its on full, it feels solid and well made. I just hate the fact that its not obvious to set up or use. I thought the rule was if you need the instructions its too complicated?
Perfect for the autumn which has just begun where the mornings are darker and colder. I set this to gradually light up between 6:30 and 7 when I wake up and by then the light is enough and feels like sunlight. Nice it has the 7 calming sounds and the radio too.
We have a very much older and simpler version of this light from Philips, and has served us well over the last 5 or so years, so I’m sold on the concept.
Back to this one, boasting 7 natural-ish wake up sounds or the installed FM radio … to he honest, I find the light alone works for me.
This HF3531/01 is very well made, as you would expect both from Philips, and for this price point and it does take up a fair bit of space on the bedside table, so it is just as well that it doubles up as a reading lamp.
There are a plethora of buttons around the outer edges of the clock, and a few read throughs of the manual were needed to set up.
The sound quality is OK rather than good, but to be honest, you are not going to listen to it for hours. FM reception was OK for me in Devon, but that does beg the question … why FM … I know the switch off date seems to be going into reverse, but no doubt it will come in the next 5 or so years … however, most of Philips competitors for Wake up alarms are already offering DAB, Bluetooth Connectivity and Wireless access to services like Spotify and Setup via an App, so this offering from Philips is a little behind the times.
Pros are build quality and light, both for going to sleep and waking up. Cons for me are size, too many buttons to remember (particularly when I am tired) and FM.
It is useful to have a USB charge socket, and there is a small internal battery to keep the alarm clock on track in case of temporary power cuts.
All in all, it is a decent product, but competition is stiff and others offer a higher tech solution.
