Sennheiser HD280PRO Headphone
Overview
These rugged, comfortable headphones are designed for professional monitoring applications.
The HD 280 Pro is Sennheiser’s most significant closed, around-the-ear headphone to be introduced in years. Designed to exceed the demands of the professional environment, the HD 280 Pro boasts extremely robust construction combined with the sound quality, modular design and aggressive noise isolation the necessary in the field. The unique collapsible design, combined with swivelling ear cups, offers maximum flexibility in any application.
This is my fourth Sennheiser purchase over the years. This headphone performs well, but is less comfortable than my other headphones.
Overall: I bought these headphones as “starter” headphones for monitoring audio as I learn videography. But Oh My Gosh – these things are excellent. The bass is so nice, clear, strong, but not overwhelming. They enclose your ears so well, that you barely hear any outside noise/sound even with no audio on. They are a bit snug until you adjust the slider to fit your head – and once you find what works for you, you’re golden. I admit that you do look like you’re about to land a plane when you wear them, but I’m over that now 🙂 Another unexpected benefit is with my 2015 MacBook Pro – when I listen to certain things on it via Bluetooth, sometimes the audio is so low, even at full volume, that it’s frustrating – even after manipulating the MIDI controls. But when I plugged these headphones in, it’s like a miracle! I get such FULL, clear, sound (especially my bass…gotta have my bass). It’s like I have a brand new laptop.
Really love these headphones, great fit especially over my glasses, I can wear these for extended lengths of time and my ears don’t feel like cauliflowers, they do get a bit warm but most headphones do but compared to other studio cans these are high on my list.
This NEW Version HD280 headphone is perhaps the bargain of the year. BUT this headphone reveals its true musical qualities with a Headphone Amp and a DAC. You will be disappointed if you purchase this headphone to use it with a regular phone or tablet or any other source which cannot drive this headphone to reveal its true potential.
I use this New Version of HD280 Pro with a DSD DAC and a SS and Tube AMP. It sounds best with a Tube Amp, it’s as if it has been designed to be used with a Tube AMP. Remember that it is transparent and will reveal any musical flaws including poorly mastered music. MP3 might be OK but FLAC and DSD sounds best.
Remember Amazon Music and a few other companies are now streaming in Lossless FLAC and some with DSD Hi Resolution music.
I would to recommend to anyone who is planning in purchasing this headphone to invest in an affordable DAC and Headphone AMP and you will not regret it. Amazon has some excellent DACs and Amps. I personally use a Denon DSD DAC, a Schiit Magni and a Bravo Audi Ocean Blue version Tube amp. These meet my needs since I am not an “Audiofool”.
I don’t use it in a studio environment, just for listening pleasure. I have an AKG Q701 which is no slouch but this headphone is my new favourite. Ok oK, I must admit that I own at least six other headphones but the HD 280 Pro is my new favourite. I wish that I had bought it earlier and remember that Amazon has it listed as the New Version HD 280 Pro.
Been using these headphones for 6 months maybe more and these headphones cancel sound…so….well. Kind of insane, I’m not one to write reviews but I get shocked when my dad walks in because I can’t hear him stomp up the steps, these are almost like Podcast Joe Rogan headphones if you watch him for comparison. Great headphones for sound quality as well. Music doesn’t have the BEST bass but if you’re not an audiophile you won’t notice.
I had this exact same make and model of headphones before and loved them they lasted me a couple years before it was broken by “brute force”. Last time I had bought them at an in person store and it’s legit the exact same as what I got from this online one. These ones have been working awesome and I can see myself still having these for years to come.
This is the best budget video editing headphone from Sennheiser. This Hd 220 pro variant can be used for music production as well as studio monitoring purpose. Don’t be misguided by the negative review in the Amazon, this is the undoubtedly the best in class headphone within 10k range. Honestly speaking if your primary purpose is editing, sound monitoring this is the best in the market but with this price point don’t expect true noise cancelling feature. This is super comfortable for long duration work and earcups are quite large and head cushioning is also appropriate. This comes with coiled wire and is around 3m. It doesn’t have detachable cord but it is durable. I have been using Sennheiser products for almost 8 years and they are truely best. It also comes with 2 years of warranty and their support is also good. This is not for music listening purpose, if you like to hear natural music then go for it. No sound leakage at all.
I have been using this for past 2 years now. I have done lot of projects, including one which was nominated for film festival (mixed using this headphones only)
This is good one for someone who would like to start their career in mixing mastering but have very less budget.
1. Noise cancellation – Excellent
2. Sound Quality – Excellent
3. Comfort – Average. The only drawback it has got is the ear section is bit tight and it starts bothering you after 1hr of continuously wearing.
4. Wear and tear – Good. The only issue I faced is wear and tear of cusion Cups and the head band cusion Pad. Theses two can be seperately bought from Sennheiser store. As you can see in the pic I don’t have Headband cusion because its worn out. I need to buy new one now.
These stereo monitors have excellent reviews from many experts, and I confirmed why and how good they are.
The above info could be misleading because these do not even compare to other headphones in the above ways.
First, noise cancellation: this is NOT the electronic noise cancellation that reverses sounds and could actually damage your hearing. I could wear these things unplugged as hearing protection!
Second, sound and bass quality: I can’t say enough good about these! You will be shocked and amazed. You will listen to familiar sounds, and realize there are parts you have never heard before. Your music will sound new.
It takes some getting used to, as your first impression will be, “these thing a are LOUD!” Then you realize you are hearing ALL of the frequencies at the same volume.
Beware though, you will NEVER be satisfied with a regular pair of headphones again.
I have used the Mk 1 & 2 for as much as 15 years everyday all day…………would not be without them. [professinal video editor]
It’s incredible quality for the price. Great for general listening, mixing, mastering.
A wonderful listening experience I would recommend them to anyone who asks! Bought two pair.
The headphones look quality built. Cups effectively block the environmental noise. At the time I purchased them I was streaming and they were good to wear for an hour or two at a time (the longer I wore them, I was getting headache from the pressure against my head). They sound clear and rich, just don’t expect that boom – boom bass. I wouldn’t recommend them for gaming or listening bass heavy music, but they’re perfect for podcasts.
As a Music Composer I have a few Brands ranging from Beyerdynamic, Sony, Audio Technica and Sennheiser but Sennheiser HD280 Pro makes the right amount of everything ..
First will be that the Headphones don’t require very large power to function which means you won’t have to carry a Headphone amp or an external DAC or Soundcard wherever you go.. They will run flawlessly with the default computer Audio jack output.
Second is they aren’t colored with EQ largely which I kind of noticed with the Treble on ATH m50x.
In fact the HD280 Pro would be the pair of headphones I have used daily….
..
Although with every Pros there come the Cons.
With every pair of Sennheiser Headphones I have owned there is always the Bad Quality of Earpads within an year of use the Earpads started to rupture and earlier with my HD180 Sennheiser service team got them replaced within the Warranty but now for HD280 pro they are saying that Earpads aren’t covered under warranty and that I have to purchase new for INR 1800/-
These are now my main monitoring headphones for al my live streaming work, they are comfy and super clear, very pleased with the purchase.
hese headphones are some of the best for a true representation of the recorded source. Can be used for mixing. No hyped frequencies.
It sounds extremely satisfying for what it’s worth with my MacBook Air. Watching a video gives hidden theatrical experience.
A relatively cheap product compared to its price in Israel
Great sound right out of the box, nicely balanced. And if you want more out of them just use an Equalizer/sound booter.
Comfort is great, my ears don’t get hot(not yet). Will get better with use, stretching them out over the box.
No active noise-cancelling, but the passive noise-cancelling is amazing. Can barely her the fan 3′ from me, and that’s without anything playing. With music or movie/program I don’t hear anything but what I’m listening to, even without a EQ.
Supremely pleased with the quality of these headsets, however I seriously wish that the cord placement could be adjusted. Right now it’s seated underneath the left Earcup, and that’s problematic since my PC tower is positioned to the right. The cord chafes against my throat and is overall a little unpleasant.
I’m considering using an Amp to reposition the placement of my Headsets audio-in jack under my desk to circumvent this issue. That’s the only complaint I have as of right now.
Fantastic headphones with great depth and tone. Put through my soundcard and boom 1000000x better than gaming headphones.
Noise cancellation is really good and is very easy on your ears
Brilliant headphones. Better comfort and sound quality than audio technica.
Amazing for gaming, music, anything really. Solid sound quality and great bass. Very noice headphones =)
Big improvement on my previous cans, both lighter and more comfortable too. Sound quality very good across the range. I’d happily recommend.
I was looking for a good low budget headphone for my home studio. Surprisingly got it with good discount by Amazon.
Working perfectly so far.
SOUND
The sound out of these headphones is just fantastic!! So beautifully balanced and neutral! The soundstage is wide (for closed-back headphones) and imaging is very good as well. The sound reproduction is very neutral, which can be an invaluable tool.
BASS-HEADS may not like these headphones: the HD 280 Pros can produce a good amount of accurate and tight bass, but it isn’t over-boosted.
CAN THESE BE DRIVEN BY LAPTOPS/ SMARTPHONES?
I had some concerns in this area given that the impedance is quoted as 64 Ohms, but both my laptop (Acer Aspire 15) and smartphone (OnePlus 7T) were able to drive these headphones without any trouble. The good sensitivity of these headphones also means that they sound loud. My (far cheaper, but good nonetheless) OneOdio PRO-10 headphones don’t produce the same volume from the same signal, despite their lower impedance.
Rating: 10/10
COMFORT
The headphones are quite comfortable: the padding on the earcups as well as the headband is better than it looks, the only issue being that the clamping force is rather high. Not so high that it ruins the experience, but something to know before you decide whether to buy these beauties or not.
Rating: 8/10 (because of the high clamping force)
BUILD QUALITY
While these headphones are all-plastic, they are built like a tank! Barring any major accidents, I expect to get 5-10 years of service life out of these audiophile headphones. The synthetic material covering the padding LOOKS cheap in the photos, but not in real life. Also, it LOOKS like it won’t last, but going by the reviews I read before buying, durability is not an issue.
Rating: 9/10 (just because it’s all plastic)
SOUND ISOLATION/ SUPPRESSION
Really great at blocking out external sounds and providing a great listening experience. You can enjoy your music/ chat/ whatever without much disturbance from your environment. If you work in a crowded place with a lot of background noise, you should take a serious look at these.
Rating: 10/10
THE MAJOR FLAW (LOST 1 BECAUSE OF THIS)
The headphone’s cable is not detachable (I knew before buying). For many people this may not be an issue, but for me it substantially reduces the usefulness/ usability/ flexibility of these headphones.
For example, at some point in the future I want to pair these with the FiiO BTR3K to make them high-quality wireless Bluetooth headphones. However, not being able to replace the heavy coiled cable of these headphones, the combination will remain unnecessary bulky.
Or, if these headphones had a standard 3.5 mm jack for a detachable cable (like my OneOdio PRO-10 Red headphones), I could add the OneOdio A71 Cable with Mic to the HD 280s and transform them into a wonderful headset for video conferencing or gaming.
SO WHY DID I BUY IT?
I was debating between this and the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x (which had the tremendous advantage of having a detachable cable, even though it’s a special 2.5 mm locking jack). Then the 280 Pros went on sale for 6,300 and I decided to take the plunge…
As you can see from the photo of the back of the box, this is old stock (imported Sep 2020) & that’s why it must have gone on such a massive sale. Also, the original price as written on the box is 8,990 (discount of nearly 30%).
Excellent linear & flat response over audible range.
Build quality is good, fortunate to get it from a country outside PRC.
Wear comfort is good enough with detailed & immersive listening experience, particularly for studio applicatio
Sennheiser hits the mark with quality and affordability for these headphones. They are comfortable for long listening sessions. The flat quality to the sound is also excellent to avoid fatigue when mixing as well as listening to commercially made recordings. I use them through a Focusrite 2i4 and directly with my Akai EWI. Directly with an iPhone is not recommended. I have other phones to compare thee to and enjoy to transparency of these. You hear all the instruments as intended by the producer on finished productions in addition to how great they are to make your own mixes in your own DAW. There is enough bass. Bass should not define the quality of a set of headphones. Clarity of all sounds and the mix should. More bass or the “bass head” mix is a matter of taste. Too much bass when poorly mixed covers up the mid and high range. Bassheads, move along and look for something else like Skullcandy or Beats. I primarily listen to Jazz, Classical and some ’70’s-’90’s Rock/Pop in addition to my own mixes using acoustic instruments and DAW created beats/background.

1. PRICE –
HD 280 PRO [new version] Bought on 23 June 2021 for rs 5460.
(Originally for rs 6499 on that day, but after offers rs 5460).
On most days this headphone goes for rs 7500.
————————-
2. ISOLATION –
these isolate/block noise only slightly better than IEM’s or earphones with good seal and good tips.
If isolation, blocking noise or noise attenuation is your requirement/purpose there are cheaper and better ways.
MPOW 056 earmuff offer better isolation and attenuation for rs 1500.
combine the earmuffs with decent earphones or earbuds or IEM’s and you will get better results for less money.
some earphones and IEM’s which offer almost similar isolation blocking or attenuation with good tips and seal [these are in decreasing order of isolation] –
1. soundmagic ES18 – rs 600
2. Soundmagic E10C – rs 1600
3. Audio Technica ATH-CLR100 – rs 600
4. Audio Technica ATH-COR150 – rs 800
5. KZ ZSN Pro X – rs 2200
6. KZ ZST X – rs 1800
7. KZ ZAX – rs 6000
any of these with the rs 1500 mpow 056 earmuffs is better at isolation.
but if you need headphones with good isolation and good sound quality these are a good option.
with just the headphone and NO music these cancel out the ceiling fan noise at 5 speed to about 50%. if heavy machinery like wood cutting saw is being used at 10 or 15 meters this cancels out or lessens the noise by about 80 %.
WITH MUSIC – almost every other noise is canceled out.
————————-
3. SOUND –
the bass is the first thing which i noticed. its quiet different from IEM’s and earphones below rs 10000. as powerful as the bass on soundmagic E10C and the KZ ZST X. But still something makes it seem different. maybe the bigger headphone drivers.
treble is smoother and more pleasant than the SAMSON SR850 [semi open headphones].
cant find any faults.
but if you dont need the isolation or build quality there may be better sounding and more comfortable options [as both headphones, earphones or IEM’s].
————————-
4. DRIVABILITY, AMP, amplifier requirement –
first things first, you can use this on your desktop PC motherboard, laptop, tab/tablet, or phone. with decent volume.
these are 64 ohms but sensitivity is also to be considered.
I use these at 40 % percent volume on my desktop PC.
The motherboard is Gigabyte H110M-H-CF [with Intel G4560].
The onboard audio is REALTEK ALC888B/ALC887.
Also on my phone at 60 % percent volume – ASUS Zenfone Max PRO M1.
about the same volume level as the SAMSON SR850.
about the double the volume level on my IEM’s and earphones.
————————-
5. FIT, COMFORT, ERGONOMICS, BUILD –
the HD 280 pro are normal sized. average weight.
clamp is not too tight. but if you are new to headphones, or used to less clamp this may bother you.
the earpads and the headband are decent for the price.
the wire is coiled so manageable but its heavy.
Build quality is top notch.
Do take care of the wires which run down each can, too much swiveling and you may damage them. and they might not be replaceable.
the main cable, pads and headband are replaceable though.
Decent set of headphones, sound is clear, noise cancelling works well. Headphones have a nice feel and are comfortable.
The noise canceling is just amazing. The downside is that it is not practical for Zoom & other social events, your voice is totally muffled.
After researching about 2 months between
1. SENNHEISER HD 200 PRO
2. SENNHEISER HD 280 PRO
3. SENNHEISER HD 300 PRO
4. SENNHEISER HD 380 PRO
5 AUDIO TECHNICA ATH M40X
6. AUDIO TECHNICA ATH M50X
7. BEYERDYNAMIC DT 770
8. SONY MDR 7506
The all rounder value for money is SENNHEISER HD 280 PRO.
I got it with special discounts INR 6499 only.
Pros.
1. Excellent flat sound with detail crystal clear……just mind blowing.
2. Build sturdy to sustain rough handling.
3. Cable is much stronger & can be replaceable by original one from SENNHEISER.
4. Ear cups are replaceable.
5. Passive noise isolation is excellent.
Cons
1. Feels slight discomfort to wear .
2. Ear got slightly warm for long usage .
3. Cable coil part is heavy though strong.
4. No cover provided to store headphone . It would have better if provided by SENNHEISER.
5. Slightly enhanced low frequencies.
After all what you are getting in INR 7k-8k range is unbelievable…just a gem .
If you’re thinking for a true monitoring headphone……blindly go for it….. SENNHEISER is SENNHEISER…..
I bought these headphones with the intention to produce and listen to music, also for gaming.
I find the sound is fairly balanced. An important factor for me is the high end, which isn’t muffled at all. I was also able to hear much lower frequencies than with other headphones or my sound monitors, sometimes slightly too much as it can potentially hurt depending on the time span and the type of music you listen to.
The sound is “in your head”, great for immersion. You don’t hear much coming from your surroundings.
The ear pads are too small though, my ears touch the speakers in the headphones which isn’t very comfortable when wearing them for several hours. Perhaps if you have smaller ears these could be a good choice. Or you could buy bigger ear pads and put those on, but that would be too much effort for me.
The cable is another inconvenience. When you breathe and it brushes over your clothes you very much hear it. Can be annoying sometimes.
I’ve tried producing music on cheap headphones and always ended up disappointed when listening on other headphone brands and speakers. The problem would usually be not enough high-mids to hear it clearly or so much high-mids that it hurts to listen.
These headphones allow me to mix in that range so the end result sounds nice on everything from earbuds to a car stereo. The exception sometimes being the very low bass. You can actually hear the sub bass in these though it’s not the same as listening through a studio monitor. Sub bass is something you feel and it actually needs to travel a short distance from the speaker to the listener to be experienced as sub bass.
These are the best. The range is totally balance. It’s as though the headphones know what the music is supposed to sound like. Beautiful sound and for the price… outstanding.
My favorite headphones by far for audio recording. You hear everything in its neutral tones. That is why I put one star on bass don’t want to hear bass or enhancements.
These are probably your best value for money in headphones unless you have a time machine. Frequency response beyond any others in this price range, and no coloration or distortion even in the limits of volume and dynamics. Sennheiser have been my choice since the early 70’s.
Very comfortable to wear for long periods. Nice clean sound, great for editing video. Also nice for listening to podcasts. Music listening is ok, but that’s not what these were made for.
Review after 2 months of use

The design is looks bulky
Can’t walk around wearing the head phones
Decent isolation , for studio type , applications ,comfortable for extended wear, reliable sennheiser sound ,cable design needs some work however .
All in all a very good buy .. quality bang for the buck.
I bought these headphones on the basis of numerous recommendations from recognised youtube reviewers. I very nearly sent these back because of ‘that clamp’. However, I persevered for a few hours, and after just a few the whole thing felt way more comfortable. The quality of the sound is excellent, clear (slightly muted treble) but that maybe because of the closed nature of the design. The noise isolation is very good.
Excellent value for money and I’m keeping these beauties.
My only complaint is irritating coiled cable though which you cant change
Excellent headphones. You can completely submerse yourself in your music with them.
Sound quality is brilliant for the money.
Bought for a little mini home studio. What great sound 🙂
I am a Music Producer and know well about all the frequencies.
These headphones are Just Amazing. The kind of noise isolation they provide is superb. The second thing is comfort.
They are very comfortable. I can seriously sleep while wearing them. They are that comfortable.
They are very flat and seriously the details of frequencies you can hear in these headphones are extraordinary.
I was having Sennheiser HD 202 before for my production. But these headphones have just no comparison.
To all the music producers, mixing-mastering engineers, and true music listeners. Buy these guys
You will surely love them.
Thank You so much, Sennheiser for making such an impressive product.
Love the product. Sound quality is amazing for the price. The biggest thing with headphones is durability. I hope I get long use out of them but would buy again. Sennheiser makes great products.
This was for a friend. I have 2 pairs myself, love them
Forgive my language, but these are the best headphones I’ve ever tried. I’ve only been using them for an hour since they arrived and I just had to share my experience. Normally, I don’t buy gear like this, but I wanted the best for my home recording studio. (I have Universal Audio Apollo Twin interface.) These headphones are soooo clear – I hear everything, good and bad on my mixes. And commercial recordings are just a joy to listen to. And the padding is so soft and gentle, it’s like being wrapped in an audio blanket.
My interface drives them just fine — I only turn the dial up to and they’re plenty loud. Considering the years of joy these puppies will bring me, the price is a bargain.
Great sound quality, but a little uncomfortable for wearing for long stretches.
I wanted something to listen to my turntable through a receiver and can’t use speakers due to living in an apt. Tried Beats and Byerdynamic headphones and glad i bought these Sennheiser’s. These are the best headphones for my taste for the money.
These headphones are of good quality and very nice sound, but not for studio recording application. I found that out after I bought them. What I am referring to is these headphones are design for pleasure use, they added a lot of base and reduce the mid-range to a point that you can not make adjustment through your equalizer to compensate for the lost. So good for pleasure but not for studio use. Cheers.
Keeps household noise out and great sound for what your listening to. Comfortable around ear headphones. They are a little tight when on but still Comfortable. Looks like a durable wire that connects to computer. Long spiral cord. I would buy again.
I have been using these for years during various live events, and have found them equally as capable of providing some incredible audio while editing audio at home. Not for use with a phone, but worth every penny and a steal at their price!
After wearing cheep 15 headphones my whole life, I was completely and utterly stund that headphone audio could sound so good, the sound canceling is top notch, and the bass is so low it makes your insides shake. They are super comfy and soft .Just note that they aren’t ideal for public use dew to them being massive, so studio in mind would be bes
I have been using the Sony MDR-7506 for a couple of years, and as I needed a second pair, I thought to try these, given that I LOVED the sennheiser 202, which I have used for 20 years. I went to the Sony because the 202, as much as I loved them, they did not last – but for the price, and sound, I did not care, I just couldn’t find them anymore.
Now, the Sony were another level, perfect sound for me (Flat sound is what ALL music lovers/creators should be the first priority!). The only thing I do not like about them is the freaking cord, which I had to attach a clip, so I can clip it to my shirt – COME ON, Sony, these are “Pro”, freaking make a detachable cord!
Now, the Seinhere cord is marginally better (shorter but stiffer), and the sound is very close to the Sony…but…
1. For using them on my computer, the Sony are more comfortable, because the Sennheiser are just too tight – Yes, I have a large head, but my wife also things they are too tight.
2. I would say, under close comparison, the Sony are a little more “bright”, in a pleasing way. Or, that the Sennheiser are a little more “dead”, in a not-as-pleasing way. Make what you want out of it.
As I have not used them as such, I wouldn’t compare them out in the field, but overall, I would say that, next time I buy another pair, it would be….the Sony. Sorry, I am REALLY sorry Sennheiser, I have never liked Sony, either for their prices, company philosophy, product reliability, but…they got it right when it came to the MDR’s! And you juuuuust missed it with the HD280PRO
Great pair of headphones. I paid 80cad, from warehouse deal, amazing quality for that price. I own hd 660s which obviously sounds better but considering the price these are one of the best affordable headsets I’ve come across
Picked these up to replace my M40x monitors, these are very competitive.
Pros:
1. Solid Plastic Build, doesn’t feel cheap
2. Comfortable for long hours of wearing due to nice padding on the top of headphone and ear-pads are acceptable
3. Very great sound for audio monitoring, so clear you will easily be able to identify hissing/buzzing and other audio issues that might arise during recording.
4. Great coiled cable that won’t tangle
5. Good price for what you get, these feel like they will last years.
Cons –
1. Don’t buy these if you love bass, these aren’t heavy on bass.
2. They snug to your head a bit strong, if you like very soft cushy headphones, these you may not like.
3. No case in the box, just the headphones.
Overall – Good value for $100 if you want professional monitoring. These headphones are focused more on sound quality than flashy design, extra features. They are all business just take them out the box and plug them into your mixer, audio interface, or any recorder/computer and monitor the audio professionally. This is why I bought them and they do this job perfectly and that is why I gave them 5 stars.
One of the best investments. I was a bit in dilemma, whether to buy this or not. But thank god chose to buy. Using since past 10 days, improved my recordings. Compatible with blue yeti mic. Really happy with the performance.
Pros
1. Noise cancellation.
2. Voice clarity.
3. Long coiled wire.
4. Gold plated pins. 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm.
5. Soft ear covers.
6. Adjustable headset.
7. Foldable ear piece.
Cons
1. A bit tight pressure on ears.
2. No mic.
Just recently purchased these to replace my old Audio-Technica M40x so much of this review is a direct comparison. One aspect of these that initially drew me in was it’s advertised 32db of passive noise cancellation. Overall I think I prefer the overall soundstage of the HD280Pro over my old M40x. Both are tuned “neutral” by design as they are both reference monitors. I feel as though the HD280Pro has somewhat more moderate and less flat bass response giving the overall sound a bit more depth without highs mids and lows getting “compressed” on top of eachother . What I’m most torn over is the long term reliability. While the headphones themselves feel significantly more durable, the lack of a removable cable really puts longevity into question, especially with the sheer weight of the coiled cable it comes with. And for that alone I am reluctant to give it that extra star. It’s “almost perfect” given the price.
I was looking for a decent quality headphone to use while recording music on Garageband. These are perfect and didn’t break the bank. I have little experience with headphones like this so cannot comment on the finer points of noise cancellation or bass quality.
I bought these studio headphones to use with my electric piano when I am practicing. The frequency response is great with no discernable drop-off at lower frequencies. My entire household appreciates how I can now practice for hours while still providing peace and quiet.
Very nice sounding headphones without much colouration, nice lower end response.
I own 4 pairs of these and they’re used in my private recording studio. Sound quality is excellent with very little little leakage during recording vocals all while remaining quite comfortable during extended wear periods. One of the better cost/quality items for headphones that are out there.
Sound quality and noise cancellation is very good.Only concern is the fitting and comfort. Not fit for long hour usage.Felt pain on ears.
Likes
– Neutral sound without excessive bass
– Good build quality; Seems built to last a long time
– Works without a separate amp when used with my laptop / iPad / iPhone
Dislikes
– Tight fit leads to slight discomfort over long listening sessions – Haven’t been able to use this for more than a couple of hours without a break
– Some form of storage protection (Cover / Box) would have been nice to have at this price poi
Can’t wear more than 2 hours without it hurting. My old Bose ere much softer, but leaked more noise.
For the average person, this price tag for a set of plastic headphones may seem crazy. For anyone who has owned any Sennheiser product in the past, or even this particular set of headphones, you’ll know that for the quality of this set, the price really is amazing. To get any better you’d be spending anywhere above 400, and headphones in the below 50 range will pale miserably in comparison. Build quality is excellent, my last pair lasted 7 years before they finally succumbed to damage (which was completely my fault). Audio quality is fantastic, though it does lack the brain shaking bass that some people will be looking for in particular. If you’re looking for a new set of headphones to thoroughly enjoy your music collection, for mixing, or even for gaming, these will not disappoint.
One word of warning, the cables that feed into the left ear piece are completely and easily replaceable, as are the pads on the top and ears, but the cable that feeds audio to the right ear is not. This will be the most common point of failure, but it takes considerable effort to damage it. Both earpieces have a large degree of rotation, and extend out to suit your head size. If you have this length set at the maximum and move that right earpiece as far as it will go, both left and right, you will run the risk of damaging this wire far more quickly than usual wear and tear. If you have to fold them up tight for travel, remember not to do so when the ears are at their fully extended distance. If you take care of this headset it will last for a very long time, well past the 2 year warranty. They endured 7 years of car rides, house moves, being dropped, tossed and twisted, but be sure to take care for that right earpiece. Keep that in mind and this set will keep you going through an apocalypse.
(This review is for the mk1 version, the mk2 version as I understand it is almost identical besides the difference in foam headpiece. If anything else has changed, so will this review.)
These are a good pair of headphone that can be used while recording as the leak of sound is very minimal. There is very good isolation. However, it starts hurting your head after a few minutes of use, so you cannot use it for leisure hearing. These can be a good choice for voice over artists and singers. It provides a good listening experience. I was previously using the hd 180 and found the 280’s sound to be a little low on the highs. I’m assuming. That is going to be a bit difficult for my ears to adjust but however, I listened to well mixed tracks and they sounded great. So mixing on these would probably give you a good sounding. Got it for 5399 on the great Indian Sale. Comes with a screw on type 6.3 mm adapter.
The sound quality was good but noise blocking was only ok. Not terrible, just ok.
With these headphones on I can blissfully ignore conversations around me. Its not absolute noise cancelling, its about the same as a pair of earmuffs for the gun range. When the music is on, you really cant hear much around you. I love my wife but man, when these babies are on, I just smile and nod…no idea what she is saying or asking. Maybe I should read her body language, what the universal sign for emergency…..no idea. What ev’s, these headphones sound great and who wants their tunes interrupted by flailing arms and screams. Not this guy…enjoy some high fidelity in peace w/ the Sennheiser HD280PRO’s !
Nice flat sound. Decent set of headphones for mixing if you don’t have a lot of money.
The noise cancellation on these guys is crazy. At full volume just from my computer, I can fill a room with sound, unless the ear cups are sitting together, then its barely audible. That carries over to when you wear them – you can’t hear others and they can’t hear your music.
Only problem I have is that the cable is a bit of a hassle to manage since it’s so thick, and the fact that it’s coiled makes it easier to accidentally loosen the connection, but its not that big of a deal and it doesn’t happen super often.
Overall, great buy for the price.
The clamping force is quite high, it sits tight on your head, but the headphones and pads are comfortable enough for long-term listening. Still, might not be comfortable for people with smaller head sizes. The isolation is excellent. These might feel sweaty in humid areas like Kolkata and Chennai.
These are classics for a reason. These are truly excellent and capable headphones, very detailed. You can use them for mixing, but these aren’t completely flat / neutral, they are slightly warm. You need two things to make this work the way you want.
1. EQ. Use the inbuilt equalizer in your phone to tweak the sound signature in the way you want. If you’re not too fussy, use the free Wavelet app. It EQs the sound automatically and system wide to match the Harman tuning. (If you’re using Wavelet, choose Legacy mode, turn AutoEQ on, select your headphone model)
2. Since these have 64 ohms impedance, buy a cheap DAC amp or amp if you use this with your phone. This is certainly not mandatory, but you will realize its full potential once you provide enough power to these through a DAC amp or an amp. I use a Tempotec Sonata HD pro with my phone. You might not need an amp if you listen to these through your PC / laptop.
Competition – Fierce competition against Audio Technica headphones ATH M20x/M30x. I haven’t heard them, so can’t answer this. AKG K371 would be a good alternative if you are looking for a warm signature.
Have fun listening to this, and welcome to the Audiophile world! 🙂
Well, I am using this brand for a pretty long time. Started with CX180 then 300 II then 202-203 and now this one.
I can tell you very well that you can’t find any other in it’s price range, as versatile as these one. It can give you everything, fron mind scorching treable to brain thumping bass, you just have to set your equalizer accordingly. Otherwise it’s damm flat…
There are only two cons(according to me obviously)
1) No detachable cable
2) Sweats in long usage
Rest all are incredible…
If you can spend 6k, and don’t need a Bluetooth, then go for it…
Worth every penny.
I had a pair of Sony Professional Head Phones that failed. A friend of mind had a wireless Sennheiser wireless Headphones that cost $350 an they were amazing. I could not believe that there was a Sennheiser HD280 Pro for under $80. It is so much better than the Sony Model. The ear cups are extremely comfortable, even for long periods of time. I miss the volume control, but I go into windows for that now. Watching movies, Videos, an Gaming is excellent. I know I cannot hear my cellphone ring when I have the Headphones on and don’t hear outside noise either.
It is very comfortable to wear. I love the coil cable. All in all for the price it is an amazing purchase.
Only complaints are it doesn’t rest nicely on neck and cable is not removable. Otherwise they are excellent for a wide range of uses.
I love these headphones they cancel out noose alot better than the dt770s and in my opinion are more comfortable, i will say tho that the dt770s are better sounding quality but these are a really good pair of headphones for 100, would highly recommend to any one with a 100 dollar budget.
Great sounds with plenty of good reviews. This is for studio sound.
As everyone has already mentioned, the sound quality is superb, noise cancellation is excellent and comfort for ears is out of the world. I am 4/5 satisfied, but 1/5 not. Here are a few things I didn’t like.
Aux cable is a bit messy. If you completely insert it, you won’t hear anything. You have to balance it such that it is 95% inserted. Also, headphones are damn heavy (0.6 kg)!
On a side note, who else enjoyed playing with the 2m long telephone wire like coil ??
Check out the Forbes review, it describes these headphones perfectly.
Pretty great sounding headphones. Good noise cancelation. Very flat neutral sound, good for mixing & mastering! Great value, especially if you get them on sale!
