Bought for my motorhome which has close-fitting windscreen blinds, and a previous attempt to fit a camera to the dash behind the blind produced too many reflections and a shaky video. This clips on and off easily, and mounts at the top of the screen within the area swept by the wipers.
I bought the clip-on polarised filter which is not a secure fit, but helps enormously in sun when on wet roads. A tiny blob of Blue-tack fixes it more securely.
Picture quality is excellent in daylight and reasonable street lighting. If I have a reservation, it’s that the instructions aren’t as clear as they could be; but against that, once it’s been used a few times, this isn’t a serious problem. I have no hesitation in recommending this camera.

A short time after getting this, it would randomly turn on and off; to fix this, plug the cord directly into the dash cam (not the base).
Love that it tells us the speed limit as well as how fast we are going (have the passenger look). We have it is set up so the driver cannot even see it while driving (keep driving the big screen, folks).
Happy & Save Driving out there.

I have six of these units, all from SpyTec. They are great units, but my most recent unit failed to power on recently. I contacted SpyTec, who switched out my unit for a new one. The process was easy, and the customer support was great. I would definitely buy a SpyTec product again.

Been using this daily in my cars for about 1.5yr. the only issues I’ve had is that the mount shakes due to the design and then you get rattles and shakes that show up in video/audio. All this shaking seemed to have messed up my GPS mount pins, but it simply stopped making a good connection. Simple fix is adding a piece of foam or something to wedge between the mount and camera that prevents it from moving.

I’m actually pretty surprised that it hasn’t had an issue with heat in Texas. Easy to set up and the length of cable makes it easy to hide and tuck away.

Posting is very bad, slow and there is now tracking.

I’ve had this dashcam in two trucks now and have caught 3 accidents. Two of which people completely lied in.
It’s very comforting having this and is a great investment, even bought my girlfriend one.
Picture quality is great, it’s small, easy to hook up and download video. Highly recommend this for any driver.

I bought this camera as a cheap fix for an older 2nd car. Totally surprised at how good it is. The picture quality is great. I use 2K.(1440). To me this is the most important feature along with GPS for speed info.
The only small negative is that it takes a little time to master the menu buttons, but once tried everything fell into place. People tell me that a camera this price isn’t as good as more expensive camera. I disagree. This camera has good choice of settings and although the screen is small, I have no bother seeing it to enable positioning. Anyway, you need to insert the SD card into the PC for the best view on any camera. The clip/off facility is very convenient as I use a suction mount.
Overall, I don’t think you could by a better value dashcam. So much so, that I am replacing my Mobius cameras in both mine and my wifes’ cars.

Mounted easily on my 08 Infiniti G35x. Got the proper fuse tap and wiring harness and the cables are hidden. No complaints, everything was as expected based on reviews on Youtube and at Amazon. Only thing that seems to be an issue around the SD card. It was formatted and works well when powered through the GPS mount. If I power it up to the camera directly, the unit has a problem with the SD card. That is very strange. I can see the video files perfectly fine on my PC and on the unit when powered through the GPS mount, just not when powered directly. Not critical, and haven’t tried formatting direct-powered instead.

Used this for 3 years now and has officially held up well in Canadian weather in Toronto.

Spytec also addressed issues with the camera very well – a great seller and would not hesitate to deal with them again.

I bought this camera for a track day and the footage results were awesome! The quality of the picture is actually better than the Hero 3 I was using prior. The wider angle is perfect for the road and the image is still impressive in low lighting as is advertised. Mic quality is good. I love the discrete size of the unit and the GPS location and speed stamp on the bottom of the videos. I would however recommend getting a GIMX app on your phone and overlaying this data with software like VIRB which give you better options at overlaying this info on your video post production.

This was my first dashcam and it exceeded my expectations.

performs really great in all lighting conditions, I was surprised at the level of detail at night even. I run mine at 1080p60fps capture and it’s nice and crisp.
One thing that’s not really made apparent to dash cam novices is that dash cams usually don’t have a battery in them and must be connected to your vehicle’s power. This is accomplished stock with a USB cable included, so be prepared for it to take up a USB port and to tuck away the cable in your vehicle’s interior somehow.

The camera has several features that I don’t find helpful/wouldn’t use in the first place, like lane assist and G force trigger recording. Impressive for a ~$80 dashcam in my opinion.

The camera slides into a separate little box that handles the GPS signal (this is where the adhesive is for the windshield, as well as power input) so it can easily be taken off the ‘mount’ and out of the vehicle if you would like to remove the camera so it doesn’t attract the attention of thieves.

Great camera and have had no problems through 1 year of daily use in all weather conditions and temperature fluctuation (90F in summer and -10F in winter).

Great customer service. The GPS module was missing in the first place, however, customer service was very responsive and arranged the shipment of the missing part fairly quickly. Today I have installed the camera and liked it very much with the clean and low profile appearance. Overall satisfied with the purchase, will recommend.

Very pleased with the dash cam. It is still going strong after more than a year. It has held up to the 100 plus degree heat of the Utah desert with no issues. I have had to restart is a couple of times when I got card read errors but that happens occasionally with most dash cams. I would still recommend the A119 II for most people.

    —May 2019 Update—

For a while I was getting a (fragment error-consider formatting) message of some sort. Whenever I would check back on the footage there would never be current recordings. I lost hope until I read an article about new “High-Endurance” micro SD cards being produced.

I replaced the generic micro SD card with a SAMSUNG “Endurance” card and presto! The unit has been working absolutely great ever since. All my criticisms for the camera are now realized from the crappy card.

    ——–

I’ve been using two of these cameras for 6 months and they both have recently been failing. It was good at first, but I think leaving it on my windshield for a few hot summer days have destroyed the internals.

Also, the lens keeps vibrating that it ruins playback. It’s crap.

This has been a great investment. I got 2 of these, one for the front and one for rear. Very easy to install and fix. Can hardly see it is there. If you are wondering what you should know about this camera here are some plus points:
    1. Have been using it since a year. No issues yet. Works seamlessly.
    2. Starts beeping if it is not recording for some reason. Very important feature.
    3. Video and audio quality is good in day and night for this price segment.
    4. No maintenance. It starts when car starts and switches off when you switch off the car. (I have it plugged in via usb)
    5. Over writes previous files
    6. Is capacity based which gives you longer life.
    Some other things to consider:
    1. Need to buy a good memory card (another $20 investment)
    2. Need to buy the polarized filter (I would recommend getting one, another $7 investment)

For this price, just get this camera. Dont spend much time researching better options.

This thing will save you so much money. Easy to install and worth every penny. Takes good video in all kinds of lighting situations. Saves audio, GPS position, speed and date and time but you can turn those off from the menu. People who drive like crap also tend to be lying bastards. Go figure. You need one of these. You will also need to get a high quality fast memory card. once you set it up, you can forget it and drive. It will do the rest. I have a 32GB card and record at the highest quality and this gives me about 3 and 1/2 hours of record time. I set mine to record in 5 minute files. I just used it to get the city to pay to replace my tire that was damaged by construction debris that they improperly cleaned up. $366.

I’ve bought and installed 3 of these so far (one in my car, one in my wife’s, and one in my mother-in-law’s).

My original was a version 1 originally. There is a known issue with the power connection between the GPS mount and the camera. When my V1 developed the problem, SpyTec quickly shipped me a replacement (without requiring the original first). Easiest support/RMA transaction I’ve ever experienced in my life.

The replacement was a V2 (my wife’s and MIL’s were V2s out of the box), which has a redesigned set of connectors on the GPS mount for a more stable connection. I haven’t had any problems since, and the other two cameras never had a problem at all.

Great camera, great video quality, great support, and a great price. Very satisfied customer here.

Works well. I recommend turning off the g-sensor. I once looked at my memory card and it was not recording any new videos for days or weeks. I suspect that the g-sensor was falsely triggering randomly, locking random video files that were very old so that there was no more room for new videos. When I turned off g-sensor option, the dashcam started working correctly and always had the most recent videos saved.

Considering how the last dash cam I had was a problem after a year of use, I will have to wait and see how long the A119 lasts before I give something like this a full 5 stars.

However, Thus far i have had no issues, and I love how hidden this cam is.
Its the winter time in the northeast currently, and I have had no incidents of the camera not work on days below -10 degrees F.

I first saw this product in looking at dashcam reviews on the Techmoan Youtube channel (entertaining chap from the UK). This fits beautifully on the “driving assistance instruments” pod behind my rear view mirror, so it is out of the way and well positioned for the road ahead. So far, I am 100% pleased with the product and its performance. Before this, I was using an app in an old iPhone – way better!

I will update this after I do some serious road-testing in our RV. More to come!

I’ve had this camera since January. Great video day and night, I love it.

Unfortunately after a few months my camera failed. I returned it and they sent me back a brand new version that had some minor upgrades from my previous one (the gps module & camera mount had been updated). Was nice to promptly get a brand new unit and not a refurb!

So far, this dash cam works great. The lens is able to capture a wide angle. I tucked it up behind my rear view mirror so I don’t have to look at it while I drive. The daytime video is great. I have not tested the night video yet. The installation was very easy.

If you are buying this and don’t want to look at the wires, I would recommend also buying the hardwire kit. It is very easy to install, and you can hide all the wires and still use your cigarette lighter.

I have had this for several months now and can give this 5 stars because it is reliable and easy to remove when I part the car. The biggest problem I’ve had with dashcams, has been reliability due to failing batteries. This camera uses a capacitor which will not last long after power is disconnected but I have yet to loose a video and it is much more reliable and heat tolerant. I take the camera down (out of the sun) when parked though since nothing seems to kill dashcams like heat.

The video is good enough to see plates if they are at a couple car lengths, but beyond that is asking alot of a wide angle lens. Night video is acceptable, not great, but good enough most of the time in the city. Having owned at least a dozen dashcams over the years, this one is my favorite since it is simple and reliable.

One thing I have never been able to get working however is playback on the camera – though with the small screen it would not be much use anyway.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersEdit: Well, SpyTec definitely stood by there product, and support was friendly and prompt. They sent out a new unit. An updated V2 model that has improvements done to the connection between the camera and GPS mount to ensure a secure connection is maintained. I had a 12 hour drive to TX the week I got it. 22 hours of driving and never had the reboot issue the last model did.

Original: It was great when it worked, but it was unusable within a couple months. I have the same constant rebooting issue that many many other reviewers have mentioned. I assume that it is heat related because the unit itself is pretty warm to the touch after it’s been in use for a bit. Very frustrating. Dependability has to be high priority for a dashcam. Guess we’ll see how dependable SpyTec as a company will be. Hope they stand by their product.

I purchased two of these about 8 months ago. The cameras were easy to install and configure and have a nice, low profile once installed. I had both of them installed and set up in less than an hour. The video quality is pretty good and they were both running fine for about 8 months. You might need to purchase a longer power cable depending on the layout of your vehicle and where you place the dash cam, but they are cheap so it’s not a huge deal.

Recently, one of them started power cycling about every 30 seconds to 5 minutes. After some troubleshooting I isolated the problem to the connection between the base and the camera unit. The contacts for the power were not staying snug enough so the camera kept getting disconnected from the base where the cable plugs into. This is problematic for something that is supposed to be on and functioning 100% of the time you’re driving and last longer than 8 months.

I typically drive about 5-10 miles a day on paved, asphalt roads so there’s not an excessive amount of bumping or vibrations. I’m not sure what caused the connection between the base and the camera to get so loose, but this shouldn’t happen from everyday commuter driving. A potential workaround is to tape the camera unit to the windshield to try secure it more tightly but this would cover up the buttons.

I started a warranty claim through Spytec and will update my review based off of the results of the process. So far they have responded quickly and the process seems to be moving. I hope this bodes well since I really like these cameras and hope to continue using them.

    Update:
The warranty placement was received and is functioning well. The warranty claim process was fast, easy, and an overall pleasant experience. SpyTec quickly responded to the initial claim and provided updates to the process. I’ve upgraded the review to 5 stars because I am very happy with how this was handled. I understand things can go wrong with products no matter how well they are designed or constructed, but it’s often how the company how the responds when something does go wrong that makes or breaks the overall product. I highly recommend SpyTec because of this and will be shopping from them again.

I purchased this particular dashcam after returning to Prior dash cams that couldn’t even compete with this one! For the price, you can’t beat it. This is actually worth the price of a $400 dash cam that I did return. The clarity at night is so perfect and I can read license plates and the wide-angle View shows everything in front of me and Playback of the actual video on my computer is very simple and easy to do. Although this is not a dual dash cam, it serves great purpose in protecting a driver by showing what is going on while driving in front of you. There is also the option of audio which I also find helpful. If this company were to sell a dual dash cam exactly as this one, I would definitely buy it and pay the price whatever it is. I am just amazed at the clarity of vision at night. This is very critical to me as I am a graveyard driver for Uber and Lyft. Great service and quick delivery as well.

Installed and set up in minutes and very pleased with quality of the video. The instructions could be more informative though. I found the unit wouldn’t keep the setting when the power was turned off, these included GPS on, MPH over KMH and the time/date settings. I emailed the manufacturer and to date I still haven’t received a reply. From trawling the Internet forums I have worked out that a/ you need to press the exclamation mark button after every setting change and not the OK button to confirm the setting change plus even though it is advertised as having capacitors and no internal battery the unit needs to be left connected to a power source such as a USB charger for 24 hours to charge the minute lithium battery that keeps the settings when powered down. Makes me wonder why excessive heat wouldn’t affect this battery when the Ian selling point of capacitor dash cams is there is no battery so they can withstand higher levels of heat inside the car.
It would have been nice to have this info in the instructions or even a reply to my email.
The Dashcam Viewer software that they recommend to use needs to be paid for before you can get the ful benefit so another 20 to shell out.
Overall, now I have it working properly I am very happy with my purchase just a shame I had to go through the bad experience to get to where I am now.

Fantastic video quality. Love the feature where I can push a button to save a scene and make sure it does not get written over. This is my second Spytec A119. Got it for the rear window. This time I ordered the extra GPS and speed read out. That is very worth the extra $10. Turns out to be very useful information. Anyhow, turn the key and the camera goes on. Key off, camera off. Great insurance. I would not drive anywhere now without having a dash cam. This one is very, very good. Does the job. Capacitor battery for summer heat a big plus. Spytec does a real good job with the manual and extras that come with it. Long, long power cord, all the clips you could possibly need Duel USB power port so you can use the same one for your phone. The dashcam is awesome and I bought a pair for my SO and I. My only gripe, and a big one at that, is how the GPS becomes unusable after merely a few days and forces the camera to restart constantly. Here’s an explanation:

The GPS module attaches to the dashcam. Even though both units have their own USB port for power, you can plug the USB cable into the GPS module and it will power the GPS and the dashcam via spring pin connectors. Over time though, because of the weight of the camera and probably because of intense heat inside the car as well, the plastic mounting piece that holds them together slowly gives way and separates enough that the GPS module and dashcam are barely touching their connectors. When you hit a tiny bump or tap the unit, it disconnects briefly and has to restart from it’s power loss.

Luckily, there was a deal so I paid no extra for this GPS module included with the dashcam but I would definitely NOT recommend buying it. Right now, it’s just a useless hunk of plastic. Now, I just have the USB cable connected directly to the camera and the problem is solved!
