Squirrel Proof Wild Bird Feeder – Mixed Seed / Sunflower Heart Feeders – Roamwild PestOff

squirrel proof mixed seed bird feedersquirrel proof bird feedersbest bird feederswild bird feeder squirrel proofmixed seed bird feedersquirrel proof bird feeder

SO SIMPLE TO USE AND FILL

Simply open the lid and fill. No need to take the whole feeder apart to fill the seed tube. The PestOff bird feeder simply ‘clicks’ apart for easy cleaning, no nuts and bolts to remove and replace. The seed container is made from thick UV stable Polycarbonate.

WATER RESISTANT BIRD FEEDER

The PestOff bird feeder has a built in weather protection to keep the seed fresh and dry to prevent seed clogging. Seed clogging is a common problem with other weight activated bird feeders that have no weather protection.

THE NEED FOR CLEARANCE

Remember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing his weight on the feeder, he can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18″ / 45 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanisms.

Excellent product – squirrels in our garden have at last been beaten and the smaller birds are arriving to feed in large numbers. Not a cheap product but well designed. Delighted customer. Thank you

I use this as a sunflower kernel feeder. It keeps the seed clean and dry. Larger birds shut the feeder opening by landing on the perch so keeping it free for smaller birds. The woodpecker is prohibited whereas the tit family and finches are allowed access. Squirrels are definitely disappointed. Worth the extra money.

The same cannot be said for the company , they play ” dumb and dim ” which indeed the personnel may be ,

It is very sturdy and since we bought it, about two month’s ago we haven’t seen a squirrel on it. But any buyer should be warned it took weeks and weeks for the birds to summon up the courage to use it. At last we now see sparrows, robins and blue tits eating from it. It is pricey, at around 40 and the one drawback in my opinion is that it can only be used by two birds at a time.

There is nothing I don’t like, it’s pretty wouldn’t mind another to put lights or something on. The most important is squirrels don’t come near it, can’t believe it to be honest. It’s great the birds took a bit to come to it but now they are fine. Love it.

I love feeding my little birds who tend to get chased away by the squirrels and larger birds i.e. blackbirds.
This feeder really does the trick. Only small birds can use it. Its brilliant. Its a joy to watch them every day.
They can feed at two points, one either side and not be disturbed by the squirrel or larger birds. Love it.

I have finally found a feeder that keeps the food dry and defeats the squirrels. It took no time at all for the birds to find and use it. It might be expensive compared to other feeders, but the extra outlay is soon recouped by the amount of bird seed that does go to waste.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’ve got two of these feeders and they do keep the squirrels at bay.
I feed only sunflower hearts and the feeders attract plenty of finches, tits, robins and occasionally nuthatches and woodpeckers – this in SE London.

The feeders have weathered fairly well. After two years they are still working and the plastic tube and metal bits are still intact. The green paint has faded in the sun.
They do need to be cleaned every few weeks, which is a bit of a chore. Despite the advertising blurb, you do get a build up of detritus in the bottom which can congeal and go mouldy. The plastic tube also gets dirty inside and is not that easy to clean. I use a bottle brush and a stick.

For something so large it is a shame that they only have two ports. The birds have to queue for an opportunity and larger birds such as finches tend to hog the perches to the exclusion of others.

Pretty expensive at 33, although I see some other company is selling something similar for 80! How ridiculous is that?

I’ve tried a variety of other feeders and I would say that in terms of longevity and anti-squirrel properties this is the best so far.

This a brilliant feeder for little birds, we’ve tried others but the crows a big birds always manage to empty them in no time. We do also feed the bigger birds and squirrels, but they had more or less chased off all the little birds. It’s great to see them back again, we now even have my favourite, a wren that feeds nearly every day.

Having tried a number of these over the years I have come to the conclusion that the one is the best. I have had one for a year or so and just bought a second one, but the original is still in good condition. It really stops the squirrels as long as its not reachable from an adjacent tree or the ground. Very sturdily put together, long lasting, the squirrels can’t chew it, the cones have the benefit of keeping the rain off the food in addition to the squirrels. All in all it may be a bit pricey but its good value considering the benefits and long life.

It’s early days yet to comment on the durability of the bird feeder but so far things are positive. It definitely deters the squirrels and larger birds, which is really what I was looking for. I haven’t needed to clean it yet so can’t comment on how easy it is to disassemble, clean and reassemble. My only small negative is that it took me a while to figure out how to remove the top to fill the feeder. There are instructions but it took me half a dozen goes before I got the hang of it.

I had problems with jackdaws constantly emptying my old feeder which led to lots of seed on the ground and rat problems. Consequently, I didn’t have a feeder for the whole Summer.

I decided to give this feeder a whirl and am thrilled with it. The birds took about 2 months to find it and get used to it but now, there’s a queue at certain time of the day.

There is no way for a squirrel to get to the feeder because I followed the instructions on where to put it etc.

It’s expensive but watching small birds in my garden gives me great happiness so it’s worth it. I also feed the jackdaws but not at the expense of the smaller birds which was what was happening.

I bought one for my mum and her birds found hers very quickly.

The one problem I have is that there are so many birds it empties quite quickly!

This seems like a very good product BUT when something comes out of a box appearing to be fully assembled it should be so.
I filled the feeder and hung it up only for the bottom to come away dropping all the bird food onto the earth!!!
I was extremely unhappy at the carelessness as I lost so much food.
I have not had time to clean the feeder so can’t rate that.
It is easy to fill & if it weren’t for the bottom coming off I would have given it 5 stars

Strong for sure. Works well. Does what is expected to ensure only small birds feed. BUT- the fiddling and twiddling needed to jiggle the tiny redundant screws into the tiny redundant holes on the top every time you refill is absolutely infuriating. I have one of these at a coastal location and it just rusts solid. More practical not to use the screws at all and twist the top shut, although this can let in moisture. Needs a design rethink!

This one replace a new one I had got that turned out impossible to clean. It is strong and always full and there are always birds waiting to get on. I have cleaned it once which was easy but doesn’t seem to get clogged up like the other one. Very happy with it and so are all the birds. I am now having to fill up every day as it’s so popular. The big birds just have to make do with any seed that goes on the ground which was why I wanted this kind of feeder.

I liked this product so much I bought a second one for the front of the house. We are plagued by squirrels and although they have not quite given up trying to raid the sunflower heart seed they have not succeeded. The feeder is very popular with the birds and is easily the best feeder we have had.

  41. BobMcIlrath says:

At long last, a feeder that does actually keep the squirrels out. My only niggle is there are only two feeding ports so there sometimes is a bit of a lineup to feed. So satisfying qwatchin the squirrels trying and trying again to breach this and failing. It’s very expensive though. Might claw that cost back in saved seed though in time.

This is a great product, I now have 2 of these feeders, no more squirrel raids and the band of magpies that tried to raid it have also given up, so what more can you say. it’s a great feeder and is feeding the birds it’s intended for.

After the 2nd week both the squirrels and the crows had cracked it! The crows fly at it to give it a nudge and the feed falls out. After they learned to flap their wings while poking their beaks in. The squirrel hung upside down on the feeder and put its mouth in to get the feed

  44. Anonymous says:

This works very well, as soon as an amount of pressure is put on the perch bar, the shutter comes down making the seeds inaccessible, so heavier birds and squirrels have no chance! It’s quite funny watching the squirrels being so confused as they’re used to the old feeder which they would totally empty in hours! I’ve only had it up a couple of days and the blue tits are using it already. I’m feeling guilty about the wood pigeons and squirrels now though, so am putting extra out for them! I haven’t had it long enough to need to clean it, but it looks quite easy to do and seems generally quite hygienic.

More expensive than most feeders, but I am pleased that the seed stays dry and that only the small birds can use it. Squirrels cannot get to the seed. It has already encouraged the chaffinches and gold finches to feed in our garden. I would recommend this feeder.

This is a fairly pricey item and I bought it out of despair as the squirrels had decimated every other feeder I tried. It has been a triumphant success! Watched for an hour as two of the little blighters threw every trick they could at it but to no avail and I’ve not seen them since. In the same way, the bigger birds- pigeons, magpies, jays- are too heavy and trigger the plates which cut off the feeder holes. Just hang it away from any branches they can sit on and lean in from.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI have three other bird feeders as shown in the photo. The one on the ground is now for the pigeons since they broke the plastic hanger from their weight clinging to the feeder. The small feeder hanging they cannot access but the long one they do cling to. I wanted a feeder that stopped pigeons from clinging to and feeding from that is for the sparrows.

The Roamwild Pestoff is a brilliant design. The feeder has two perches that are weight controlled. With no weight on the perches smaller lighter birds can feed from the open hatches. As soon as a heavier Bird lands on the perch, it’s own weight pushes the perch down which slides a shutter down inside the hatch, effectively closing the hatch and stopping all access to the seeds inside. And it works. A pigeon was spotted trying to feed from it and was completely unsuccessful. The pigeons no longer go for this feeder, but the longer one instead.

If you have similar problems with pigeons, larger birds or animals, I can certainly recommend this feeder. If a ten perch, or a multiple perch, feeder was available that had weight closing perches, I believe it would also be a popular choice for bird feeders like this one is.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersAs it says, this feeder is squirrel-proof and also stops larger birds accessing the seed. (I’m feeding a high-quality seed mix.) The directions say to hang it so the base is too far from a nearby branch for a squirrel to reach the seed ports, which I did. I watched my regular garden squirrel try to climb down onto the top and immediately give up, and he hasn’t bothered since. The little birds took a couple of days to work out where to access the food. But they quickly did and I’m getting great tits, coal tits, blue tits, and robins at the feeder. (London garden.) I’m now getting the suet pellet feeder. Without the big birds and squirrels scaring them off, they can feed easily. Really happy with it.

Tried one of these to dissuade the crows and it seems to have worked a treat. The spring on one side seemed to jam on one occasion but has freed off and has worked OK since. Expensive but 100% effective. Squirrels have given up, pigeons can’t get to the perch and would close the mechanism if they did. Tits and Robins are now constant visitors to the feeder and can do so to their hearts content not having to compete with the aforementioned pests. I now realise how much I was spending on sunflower hearts feeding the squirrels before we got this feeder – I think this will pay for itself in just a few weeks.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI am most impressed with the new design. It took the squirrels almost three years to get into the old design by nibbling the plastic cuff and swinging on the springy trapdoor. Golden Review Award: 42 From Our UsersWas slightly sceptical having purchased “squirrel proof” feeders before. Arrived on time and immeadiatly filled and hung on the tree alongside other feeders but away from branches so that no large birds or squirrels could access for them. As usual with a new feeder, it took a few days for the birds to get used to it, but a robin was the first to discover and now, less than a week later, sparrows and bluetits are happy to use. With six squirrels in the garden, they continue to use the other feeders although they have attempted to access this ……was worth every penny to watch as they tried to get the seed….it was hilarious and they simply left it alone. Only comment I would make is to ask the manufacturer if it would be possible to add more feeding perches? With only two, and having many small birds feeding, they have to queue up waiting for their turn, so would to be able to have this as the only feeder.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is really effective at stopping the squirrels from eating the food. They’ve tried but have given up and don’t bother any more. The birds were eating from it within a few minutes of hanging it up so there was no problem with them getting used to it. It is a bit fiddly to undo the clips to fill up and needs to be firmly pushed back together so that it’s done up firmly. It is a bit more expensive than other feeders but as squirrels have broken other feeders I’ve had it will be a saving in the long run.

I’m not too sure how to review this item because it seems well designed and solidly constructed – but the birds don’t seem very keen to feed from it?

I’ve not seen any squirrels yet so I can’t say how effective it will prove.

Nice design, a doddle to clean and looks attractive flippy-flapping whilst suspended from a branch. The stored seed has been perfectly protected from the recent driving rain. Much better than expected. Defeats squirrels and large birds BUT not my invasive parakeets. They take-up station upon one of the three perches and-oh-so delicately edge round to an open port and with quite a degree of care and balance and then tuck in until satisfied.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersUmm,For all but one Squirrel it did,However one worked out if he reached down upside down he slid hands (feet) down either side of tube then wrapped his body round it in the ridge above feeding ports. So I put Vaseline on ridge and down bottom half of tube, He slides off a treat and for added entertainment put bucket of water underneath. Its like watching Its a Knockout for Squirrels!!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersRemarkably effective, although at least one smart jackdaw has learnt that while the perch it lands on closes the feeding aperture, it can stretch round to the next one to get the seeds! If there were just two apertures (on opposite sides of the tube) instead of three, it would work better? Otherwise, an attractive and ingenious design.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersYes, good well made product, but at the price so it should be.
We bought two bird feders in an effort to keep Rooks, Criws and Jack Daws from gorging n the food.
BINGO… THEY WORK WELL. – Important to hang them in a mannervthatbthe Crows can’t swing them to shake he seeds out. We lengthens the distanc the feeders hand from the central pole and used a shiny black guttering downpiipe to go over the feeder centre support shift. The crows could not cling to the drainpipe but they could to the original thinner centre pole.

A combination of the Feeder design and a more considered mat God of suspending them is saving us big time on the bird food. Small birds soon get used to the design and appear to,lov the feeding system… Expensive but worth the money! Will buy more in the future.m

Brought this item for my aviary owing to have canarys, all other feeders iv used made a lot of wasted seeds ,was not sure if this was suitable for the job , but pleased to say I’m very happy with the squirrel proof bird feeder 100/per-cent ,there is a small amount of seed thrown about ,but very little .A satisfied customer.Thank-You

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI read the reviews and thought well let’s give it a try.
To my absolute delight it really does work. The sqirrels have been inquisitive but have not managed to get a free feed. They have even given up shinning the pole realising it’s a waste of effort.
The pigeons have tried landing on the perch but have not had any luck despite being able to see the seed.
I have been so impressed with the product I purchased a second one.
I am saving a fortune on bird seed now I am no longer serving to my local population of squirrels and pigeons.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWell I think you’ve cracked it with the Squirell proof bird feeder
I spent 15 mins videoing that crafty intelligent Squirell who was trying to suss how to get his seed . I could hardly control my filming because it was so funny. After 10 attempts the steel door kept dropping down He gave up and got crab apples instead

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersSquirrel Proof Bird Feeder – PestOff Mixed Seed feeder – NEW PRODUCT
I have just ordered a peanut version after great success with the mixed seed version. It took a little while for the birds to use it but once one or two started using it the rest followed. Even our local woodpecker has tried it out. The squirrels hate it and don’t bother too much with it. I haven’t seen any other pests on it either.

I adore these as they do exactly what they claim – deter squirrels, parakeets and pigeons from using the feeder. HOWEVER, I have had to remove mine from the garden as the little birds (mainly sparrows) who came in droves to feed dropped so much seed on the ground my neighbours complained about the number of feral pigeons attracted to the area. An expensive experiment.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersIf not the Rolls Royce of bird feeders it is certainly up there with the BMWs & Mercs ! Bought to keep our small garden birds happy whilst defeating the onslaught of larger birds cleaning out all the bird food or food catching the eye of the odd ratty invader. The perches are based on a “weight of bird” system – any bird too heavy & the little trap doors defeat all attempts to linger. Well, except for some of our devious “bandits” – jackdaws are so clever – you can actually see them working their strategies out. Not many succeed (or should that be “suck seed ?) but it so much fun watching them try we don’t mind ! We hung this feeder from a shepherds crook stand (Gardman I think) & it’s perfect. Even funnier if you grease the pole part – never seen a jackdaw look so embarrassed sliding down without it’s breakfast. To soften the humiliation we feed them separately (suckers that we are). Any food that the small birds drop is soon taken care of on the ground underneath by the “sweepers” – blackbirds & a few wood pigeons who are by no means as daft as they look !

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThe birds came back from my old bird feeder 3 weeks later. Big saving on bird food as the pigeons can’t eat the food or any other large bird.
The manufacturer’s suggests putting it out on an 18ins line to keep the squirrels away. My experience has shown that the squirrels came and had a look and gave in when they couldn’t eat the bird food.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersThis product definitely works from the point of view of stopping pigeons feeding from it. They can’t land on it and, if they try, their weight means they can’t get into the bird food. The only reason I did not give this five stars is because the design means that seed too easily spills out and the sparrows and goldfinches that flock to this feeder (didn’t take them long to do so) are messy eaters and half the seed goes onto the ground. I seem to loose more in this way than from other types of feeders. I suppose this feeder is a partial success in that at least the pigeons aren’t emptying the feeder in a few hours, but they are still around, only now just pecking seeds off the grass. A new worry is that I’m concerned the amount of spilled food might encourage rats. Hey ho, a constant battle with nature.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI have already reviewed the peanut feeder, but as I bought my second seed feeder and one peanut feeder at the same time I will confirm that the seed feeder is also excellent. It’s summer and the sparrows are enjoying one feeder filled with millet, mixed seeds and mealworms and the other feeder containing sunflower hearts. I guess winter will test how pest-proof everything is.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersWe have a problem with squirrels, parakeets and feral pigeons, so anything that keeps them off the food and gives the little birds a chance is great. It’s too early to tell if Einstein the Squirrel will work something out, he’s probably at the library reading up on the subject, but the parakeets have been defeated and the pigeons just hoover up what’s on the ground. So far the peanut feeder hasn’t been very successful, as the little birds don’t seem to be able to get the peanuts out as quickly as they’d like – they try each port and then fly off. Have just removed whole peanuts and given them a very coarse chop to see how that works out. As it’s summer the sparrows and blue tits may not be as hungry as they’ll get in the winter so I suppose time will tell. At least they’ll be used to seeing the feeders in the garden.

Small birds are using the seed feeder but nut feeder is not being visited much at the moment. Rats have not been successful so far in plundering the food, which is good news
