Especially in France, chefs and home cooks appreciate the value of cast iron. Passed down from generation to generation, the robust material impresses with its durability and energy efficiency. While other materials wear out over time, the properties of cast iron improve with regular use, making it an irreplaceable tool in the kitchen.

Optimal flavour development
The flat lid developed by STAUB has a special moisture-retaining structure on its interior, ensuring continuous and natural basting of food as it cooks. Condensed moisture simply collects on the sides of curved lids without this special structure; with the Chistera lid from STAUB, it drips down on the lid’s textured elements for even distribution. The effect is enhanced by placing ice cubes on the lid.
Energy-saving cooking
The cast iron ensures optimum heat distribution and makes the cocotte an energy-efficient cookware option. First, heat the cookware for 5 minutes at one-third of the total power of your hob. Then you can use full power and heat the roaster up to 250°C. Thanks to the particularly long and even temperature retention, hot food stays hot for a long time even on the table, while cold food remains optimally cool.
High-quality enamelling
The interior of the cast-iron cocotte is coated with a matt black enamel which features a rough structure. This creates a perfect sear on your food and enhances the flavour of the fresh ingredients. With each use, fats season the roughened structure which, in combination with heat and steam, create excellent non-stick properties over time. Over time, the natural patina that develops allows you to sear and fry with only a little fat – plus, clean-up is a breeze.
Made by hand
All STAUB products are made in France with traditional craftsmanship. Individual sand moulds give each product its unique shape. Through handiwork and with love for detail, the cookware acquires its unique appearance, functionality and excellent quality.

Bought this after the Dutch oven in same size and colour. This is smaller and lighter and easier to work with, leaves much more space in the oven. We still use the Dutch oven every week for roasts, and we use this a couple tones a week for curries, casseroles, fajitas etc. Quality product that I hope will last a lifetime.
Thank you for the quick delivery and the great product.
Good for long slow cooking on hob or oven
Heavy-based pan good connection with hob.
Designed to encourage steam to condense back into the dish to retain moisture
Grey and Black – very elegant – can take from the cooker to the table to serve!
One negative is that the knob heats up – need oven gloves!
Staub brands utensils are made in France and extremely high quality cast iron pan. Food tastes very unique as the heat spreads even and very tasty.
But only negative is it takes a lot of shelf space and very difficult to clean.
We have a few cast-iron dishes in our kitchen, but this is my first Staub one. The shallow shape makes it a really useful addition and I’ve found it good when a recipe calls for a large frying pan, but you don’t quite have anything large enough! The lid is designed for liquid to gather during cooking and return to the dish from multiple points keeping meat dishes moist. My only reservation is that lining it up next to other glazed cast-iron dishes, the glaze is not quite as neat, with the edge of the glaze not straight and slightly less than perfect, which I think it should be on a premium piece of cookware. This, however, does not effect use when cooking.
The most noticeable thing when you first receive this product is the sheer weight of the thing. It is cast iron and they haven’t scrimped by making it thin walled; it’s perhaps not so great for those with limited strength or other physical difficulties. It shouts high quality though and is the sort of cookware that you don’t really want to hide in a cupboard, but would rather have out on display.
It is a decent size and will easily hold a casserole for four if not more. In use I found that initially meat caught on the bottom, but this was remedied by cooking at the right tempeature and with the right amount of oil. Once it’s hot it does hold its heat well and I turned the heat down to its lowest for a three hour simmer. The results with my steak and stout casserole was fantastic. No doubt you can get the same result in a cheaper pan, but this one is going to last you years and will probably be the last one you need to buy.
This is an expensive casserole, you can get a Le Creuset for less but it is in my opinion more attractive in appearance. It is also very heavy so maybe not suitable for the elderly or weak of arm.
We tested it with a chicken casserole using it to fry the onions and chicken on the hob and then transferring the whole dish to the oven. Being so attractive we then just took it to the table for serving.
None of the ingredients stuck at any stage and when it came to washing it came clean with no effort at all.
The carrying handles are well placed and make it easy to carry the casserole evenly when full of hot food.
If you can afford it then this is a great addition to any kitchen.
There’s no mistaking where this dish is made, it has “Made in France” on the box, cast into the lid and there’s even a tricolour ribbon around the knob. This is a good looking dish in an attractive grey colour, suitable for serving directly onto the table; we have some Le Creuset, which is of a comparable quality, but in a less attractive orange. The dish is heavy and works on an inductive hob. The inside of the lid has ridges to drip the condensation back into the dish. Ideal on a low heat for casseroles and stews where the slow cooking brings out the flavour and vegetables and meats are juicy and tender; the dish then goes straight from hob to table. The interior coating is tough and easy to clean; we do put our Le Creuset in the dishwasher as it is heavy and awkward to hand-wash, it doesn’t seem to have harmed it, and we have had it over 30 years; we expect the Staub to last just as well. A good investment.
I am very pleased to own this Staub cooking pan. I love the colour and it is the perfect size for a family. The pan is very heavy and can be used on the hob in the oven and under the grill if you need to brown your dish. I have cooked several meals using this pan and found that the heat is distributed evenly and browned my meat just right. I like the fact that it can go from hob to oven, saves on the washing up. It did not drip condensation onto the hob while cooking. After cooking the pan retains the heat so keeps the food hot for a good while so ideal for serving at the table. It is easy easy to clean I just just a cloth and hot soapy water, and although it can be put in the dishwasher it does recommended not doing this to often, but in my experience it is not necessary anyway. The pan comes with a detailed instruction booklet which I do recommend reading .
I was quite shocked at how heavy this was. It arrived packaged well.
This arrived on the day I was gonna make a chicken stir fry so I thought I’d give it a go. The chicken didn’t stick and cooked well. I like the fact there’s a lid so I was able to put the lid on to keep the food hot while I dishes out the rest of the dinners. Well I am very impressed with it. The previous pan would normally have the chicken sticking to it but not with this one.
I’ve used it every day since I got it. In fact instead of putting it away in the cupboard I’ve been leaving it on the stove as it looks so good. I love that I can brown mince off on the stove and then use the same hot to make shepherds pie, cottage pie etc.
This pot feels so solid I think it’s going to be one of those pots that can be passed down the generations. I’m now drooling over other Staub products.
Wow!
This review is for the Staub 40511 470/0 grey pot.
The product arrived well packaged and on time.
I already have in my kitchen cupboard a couple cast iron pots and pans. The ones I have are made my Le Cruesetm, another well know French brand. I had never come across this brand before but boy am I glad I did!
I have always loved cooking in cast iron dishes and this one is a delight! The foods taste so different and cooking experience is so much better.
The quality of this saucepan is amazing, it’s About 30cm in diameter and comes with a lid. It is very easy to hand was, I generally would not put in the dishwasher. Excellent product and would highly recommend. These life time pans and hence the expensive price. But worth it!!
The Staub 40511-470-0 grey 28cm (11″) circular shallow casserole is superb, and has several subtle design features to enhance the cook performance. I was delighted it is not “oval” as suggested in the Az blurb, because I much prefer the circular pots for being more compatible with the rings of my induction hob.
The whole surface is enamelled, including the underneath that sits on the hob, so avoids the rust stains my fifty-year-old Le Creuset E creates from leaving it on a damp draining board to soak for a few hours.
The knob on the shallow dome lid is stainless steel, so no worries about it disintegrating in a hot oven.
The shallow little hooklets inside the clever Chistera lid catch the condensation (fat or steam) and drip-baste the food being cooked instead of allowing it to run down to the edge of the lid. The inner lip of the lid also helps to contain the liquid and there is almost nothing splatted out on the hob or inside the oven.
As with all enamel products it should be treated with care, because enamel is actually glass and can be damaged by sudden shocks, both mechanical and thermal.
So far it has proved to be easy to clean, but that is because the glass surface has not been scoured or overheated, and it is still glossy grey on the outside and glossy textured black on the inside.
Beware, it is heavy and takes a while to heat up, and just as long to cool down, but in my opinion this is yet another good feature of it.
The instructions are tiny and minimal but sufficient and in several languages, and mostly advertising for other Staub/Zwillig products. (The lid is NOT the flat Cocotte style mentioned in the instructions.)
This pot is the best for everything you might cook. Soups, stews, a roast. It is heavy however but this means it holds the heat very well.
I wanted a shallow cast iron dish, it is much more versatile than a big one, I use it almost every day now. The quality is amazing and it is easy to clean. Now I want more Staub products, it is addictive. Grey colour suits my kitchen so I just keep it proudly on my counter top!
