I am currently doing a big renovation to my kitchen and I have no gas hob any more. Bought this product well before work started to check it would be ok. It has been great. Very easy to use and move about as required. Will keep hold of it once kitchen is finished
I bought another one after the old one (same model) packed up after 4 years of everyday use – my fault, not it’s own!
I am very happy with it – easy to clean, easy to navigate, keeps a very good temperature and cools down quickly.
Living in a flat the smell from oily cooking can be long-lasting especially in an open space kitchen. Having a balcony is really good so we figured why not cook oily stuff outside and this tefal is pretty good with it. It’s induction hob so you need to make sure your pots and pans are all compatible with induction hobs. All in all, it’s great, easy to clean as there are no small crevices on the surface so after you let it cool off the cleaning is simple.
I occasionally need a separate hob unit and this works well. Just get it out of the cupboard, plug in and away you go. I find that a low setting of 3-5 works well, over that is too fierce. I also leave it plugged after I have finished cooking until the fan stops running and it has cooled down.
It’s really easy to use without too many complicated buttons.
The only thing I wish it did better was have a smaller increment in heat between each heat setting. i.e. When I use the heat level on 2, it simmers on and off to keep it at a lower temperature, but when I increase the heat level to 3, it boils over. Somewhere in-between would have been a nice option to have.
This replaced my previous one, very easy to use and to clean ,well worth the money
So far so good, used a few times while camping on a electric pitch, fast and efficient.
The best the only thing is you can’t use any cookware apart for the electric stoves
We were a little unfortunate to have been caught re-decorating our kitchen as the lockdown started, so we weren’t able to get it finished as fast we as needed it. For that reason we decided to but this little hob to cook while our kitchen wasn’t ready. And it was the best decision! It works so much better than my normal hob, it heats up supper quick, I even stop using the kettle and just boiled the water in a pan because it was so fast.
It takes you a few times to get used to the automatic settings, but you can always just use the normal setting and put it up or down accordingly.
We’ve just moved house and until renovations are complete we don’t have a proper cooker, so we bought this hob to tide us over. It’s absolutely brilliant, does the job perfectly and boils water so quickly we might actually carry on using it even after we’ve got our proper cooker back. It does run quite hot so you need to keep an eye on it, but once you’ve got used to it I honestly can fault it!
This hob has changed how I cook! I love it! I love how fast it is to heat up a pan and then cut off the heat instantly.
I do wish the manual control gave you an extra increment because it’s hard to find a simmer setting.
You also need to be alert when using the job, it’s very easy to burn end up with a smokey pan because it gets very hot almost instantly, so be careful.
However, when used correctly, this hob is definitely worth the money!
Bought this while I was renovating the kitchen and certainly kept our sanity!
Great little hob for the money, as other reviews say works a little hot so use the lower settings.
I had a problem few mounths ago , I was almost burned my house and I couldn t Cook anymore I was really scared about cooking again , so I bought this thinking that it will be more safe than a e electric hob and is it I love it, make a little noise but is normal and after few stops you won’t heard it anymore and is really easy to clean.
This is a cracking bit of kit and I use it at home, in the kitchen, outside next the bbq and in the van when connected to mains power. I’m a newbie to induction cooking but this is simply a brilliantly easy and safe way to cook. The unit itself is easy to transport, store, clean and use and it’s rather converted me to this method of cooking.
I had 2 reasons for buying this – firstly to use in some cookery videos that I was recording and secondly I’d been having problems with my electric deep-fat fryer, and I saw that I could set temperatures for deep-frying on this. I do already have a couple of portable induction hobs, but as I’d left them at work I was unable to access them during lockdown, and they didn’t have the temperature setting feature as they were quite old, so I am used to using this type of hob. It’s quick and responsive to use, and very easy to clean as it just needs a quick wipe over after use.
However, it is slightly noisy to use, which is something you’d probably not notice too much in everyday use but the video picks up the noise of it.
What I do really love is being able to use it for deep-fat frying. I used to find it a really tedious job to have to clean out my electric fryer after use. I don’t really just like using a pan on a conventional hob in case I lose attention and it overheats – I do know you have to be careful deep-frying on any hob, this induction one included, but I feel it’s an extra safety measure that it’s got a thermostat, so it’s less likely to overheat. So I can just use any saucepan (induction comparable) with oil, strain the oil back into a container after use and put the saucepan in the dishwasher – so no fiddly bits to clean that I’d have with the electric fryer.
Really happy with this induction hob. It makes my morning stovetop coffee in a fraction of the time of a normal electric hob. It’s easy to clean, compact and tidy. I use it to boil my Le Creuset kettle too which it does really quickly. I’ve also used it in my campervan (when I had access to mains electricity) and it was safer than using the gas hob. Have recommended to my friends and wouldn’t hesitate to do so again.
It is plain easy to understand but being patient is the virtue , would buy over again , very cheap to run on the electricity , slow heat function is better on this than older unit also..
Great for almost all cooking. Very light to move around, and a cinch to clean.
We use it for cooking pancakes at the table, cooking outside in the garden and occasionally in the kitchen itself.
It runs perfectly off extension cables (we’re using a 40m one for the garden) and like any induction hob, changes temperature quickly when you move up and down the power levels.
Max power gives a good heat, and has been plenty for anything I’ve tried. The only minor criticism is that power level 1 (the lowest) is still too much if you want to very gently simmer something.
Build quality seems good, although I’ve only had it a few weeks.
In all, highly recommended. Versatile, easy to use and powerful.
This is a good option if you do t have a full job. Make sure your plans are compatible and don’t let the pasta water overflow.
Omg this product is perfect.
I originally bought this to use while we were having our new kitchen fitted. I was a little apprehensive as I have only ever cooked on a Gas hob before. However, I was surprised to find how well this hob cooks everything I have cooked on it. Not one dish burned.
The temperature control is perfect and yhe different settings on it are well suited.
Once my kitchen is completed I will still use this as an additional hob when needed.
I cracked my Ikea portable hob and needed a replacement asap. After reading the reviews on Amazon and wanting to purchase a European brand I am so happy that I purchased this Tefal one. I mainly use this portable hob when I am videoing for Youtube. It is perfect. Super efficient and compact. Much smaller than the Ikea one I had so it takes up less space on the bench. I love that it heats up super quick and you can choose between a pre-set button eg stews, stir fry etc or the manual temperature. If you need an extra cooktop I would highly recommend buying this one.
My cooker was on the blink and with a 2-3 week wait time for repair I knew i needed to cook at home (cooking pasta in the microwave doesn’t count). so happy i ordered this instead of a regular hot plate. It’s induction so it heats up almost immediately. cooked everything from biryani to pasta and curries on this with no issues, tbh when my cooker got repaired i kind of missed using the hot plate. There’s loads of heat settings on it (manual, stir fry, boil etc) but i just stuck to the manual heat settings and turned it up and down accordingly. The ONLY downside is as it’s induction you can’t use any aluminium pans, just non stick or stainless steel. the rule is if u can stick a magnet to the pan, it’ll work on an induction hob.
I’m spoiled. Having grown up in EU and Israel, I got used to 220V appliances. So when I remodeled our kitchen in America, I ran some lines and installed a few 220V outlets in the walls next to the 110V standard outlets.
For years, I have been buying 220V hot water kettles from UK and having them delivered, here.
(I Love the speed I can boil 1.7 Litters in 3.5 minutes). This was the first 220V Induction stovetop I have bought (I have 2 that work on 110V, NO comparison).
I have to tell you, being a chef for 20 years, this little stovetop really cooks, It Is easy to clean up, folds and stows away in the cabinet, all for under $50.
I have almost stopped using the gas-powered cooktop in my kitchen because of this little baby, I’m thinking about ordering another one.
Stay safe! This virus danger will soon be over.
I bought this hob until i got a new cooker. It’s perfect. Does the job as described. I recommend it.
It is quite nice and strong. The only problem is it doesn’t work with all of my aluminum pans.
I wasn’t sure how often I will use it but decided to get it as it was on sale. We use it very often. if it is for smelly / oily cooking that better to do outside or just because the kitchen is already busy. Great product, highly recommended. perfect control over heat. I am not using the built in plans but it’s nice to go over the manual and know what is available.
It’s very easy to use and very easy to clean. I’ve used it with steel-based pans and a cast iron pan. It works very well for quickly heating up contents of the pan (e.g. water) but go easy if heating up a cast iron pan as it could crack it if done too quickly.
It is quite a noisy unit.
I had another induction hob for 5 years and broke just before Christmas.
I chose this induction hob which I am very pleased with it. Good quality.
It was bit difficult at the beginning because the temperature is showing slightly different then my old one but now is ok
I don’t need a full size cooker, so this is perfect for me.
It heats up and cools down quickly.
When frying anything, I press manual, then the Up button until it shows P3. This is the best setting for cooking sausages, bacon, steak etc. Just use butter not oil, as the oil will burn in the pan.
A quick wipe with a damp cloth, and it’s clean.
The manufacturer recommends a pan size no bigger than 25 cm for the job.
I normally use gas and have never tried an induction hob before. This experience was very positive and quite surprising. Normally it takes a small pot of water about 5 minutes or more to boil on a gas hob. It took less than two minutes, if that, with this induction hob. One disadvantage that I can see is there seems to be no ‘high’ simmer. Instead it either simmers very slightly or boils.
Before using this device, I was worried there might be no ‘manual’ control, but it turns out this is the middle control with the plus and minus signs. There are a large number of options with this device which I love, including a timer, which could be very useful. I find the ‘pause’ function rather amusing as it puts cooking in a sort of ‘movie’ category.
The fan that comes with the hob cools it down very quickly, which means it can be moved quickly, if needed. Having recently been burned using my gas hob, I also appreciate the flashing ‘H’ sign on this hob that indicates it is still hot!
Easily cleaned, light, quick to heat up and easy to use generally, I would recommend this hob.
Used once so far to make soup.
Plug in, push a button and go….easy as that.
Have only used the manual function, temp control seems gd and responsive, easy to adjust.
A little larger than expected, but will still be very useful for electric hook up camping, and alfresco dining.
Very easy to clean, simply wipe off with a damp cloth, and then wipe over with a dry tea towel
My conventional cooker had died so I needed some instant alternative! This little hob was/ is brilliant. It is so much faster than the big cooker and it has better temperature control.Better than that, if you leave it on by accident, it swiches itself off. Highly recommended
I am over the moon with this little beauty.I have just moved into a 1 bedroom flat, that has a cooker with a hotplate, which takes ages to heat up and similar cooling down.
I bought this tefal induction cooker, with 6 settings’ prefer to use the manual settings it goes from the lowest setting to the highest setting instantly.Just as it would on an induction cooker.Just a personal choice.
It’s so easy to clean, clean in seconds ,even after frying.
Why do Tefal make everything better than everyone else, an induction hob with added dedicated modes, the milk mode takes a while to heat your milk, but worth it when you taste the hot chocolate, stew more heats beans without catching, yet to try shallow fry and deep fry modes, but expect them to do just what they say. Rapid water boil is just that.
A portable hob that works perfectly as an additional cooking option for Christmas and Easter or even for cooking outdoors. All you need is a near-by power-source
With six pre-set functions you can adjust the hob’s heat perfectly to suit what’s cooking, made from scratch-proof black ceramic plate, it’s very durable, looks smart and is simple to clean.
A great addition to a busy family kitchen.
He reservI got to work with him, I invited him to special eventsed for me, which I have many guests
I purchased two of these for use on a camping trip and am delighted with them. Be aware that you must have induction compatible cookware to use them. I already have them which is why I made the purchase. It is a joy to use. You have excellent control of the temperature. There are a few programs for things like boiling water, heating milk, stir fry’s etc as well as manual control and a built in timer.
If you are in the market for a portable induction hob, I recommend this product.
We have been using this for 8 weeks now while the kitchen is being redone (a total bare brick refurb)
The reviews are mostly accurate. It is amazing to use and very small and powerful. It has made countless pans of porridge and pasta, burgers and fry ups and lot of boiled water for the steamer.
It also has a non linear temperature control. Level 3 burns things and 2 doesn’t simmer enough. The timer is superb because when it stops it stops and the food does not burn. It also does occasionally give E1 errors when it overheats. Overall if you watch it, it is great. Boiling water is super quick and we have got used to it. Induction is not gas but compared to old fashioned electric ceramic plates this is a million times better.
It takes seconds to clean and used in a confined space we found it safe to use. Recommended as a portable hob. Wire could be a bit longer!
Works really well.
Plug in and the heat is available right away.
Very easy to use.
Perfect for a small kitchen or bedsi
The automatic modes are a bliss, it’s easy to use and to clean.
The only problem is, the manual modes are too powerful, and even on potency 2 or 3 I tend to burn my food
Almost perfect. This brings the pan up to temperature really quickly. As long as you have the appropriate pans. My old pans predate commercial induction hobs.
This has a couple of very minor issues.
The controls could offer finer control, it’s a bit too course. I also wish that the boil, simmer, slow cook buttons were direct access, the same as all the other controls.
Something that would be nice would be a small lip around the edge. Because my work surface isn’t quite level, any spills run off the edge.
I love the design and that it remains cool, except under the pan. This makes it pretty safe.
Because of my experience with this, my next cooker will have induction hobs.
This isn’t as small or slimline as you may expect, but then that does mean it can cope with pans as big as woks and saute pans.
The touch sensitive controls are easy enough to use, and because of the way it works they heat up the pans quite quickly.
One aspect I really like is the unit will beep and throw an error message if the pan you place on it is either too small for the power setting, or if it is the wrong material (eg aluminium)
As an induction hob this works on a sort of magnetic type system so needs some iron/steel etc in the material of the pan.
I think the energy conversion to heat in the pan is efficient, and another benefit is the hob itself doesn’t get too hot. It will probably cool down faster than a normal gas or electric hob and there seems to be a little fan inside which helps to shift the heat.
Overall reasonably impressive, but perhaps bulkier than you’d think so if only for occasional use this would be niggly to store.
I’m a bit late onto the Induction bandwagon, but I’m glad I’ve climbed onboard.
I like more control, so even with lots of preprogrammed settings it does also have a manual mode. In terms of heating, saucepan was hot in seconds. And when adjusting temperature down it was practically instantaneous.
Cleaning wise, I did have a slight boil over but one quick wipe and it was gone. Nothing burnt on (as no real heat on hob) and no marks. Looks as good as when I took it out of the box.
Don’t think I could ever go back to a normal hob again..
This is a slim profile induction hob at just 45mm high and very versatile to use. The interface is simple with touch sensor buttons allowing you to easily select through the six preset cooking modes which are slow cooking at 70-90C, stewing at 80-100C, boiling at 100C, stir fry up to 200C, fry up to 220C and a boost mode increasing output up to 2100w. There is also a manual mode where you can set your own parameters over 7 power levels between 300-2100w. These multiple modes make it very versatile to use, heat output seems very good for its slim profile and the ceramic plate heats up very quickly and seems to conduct heat evenly. The ceramic plate is suitable for pans with diameters from 10-26cm. Overall this is an excellent portable induction hob that’s easy to use although does include full instructions to get the most out of it. It’s perhaps not especially cheap but it works really well.
Having had the pleasure of various induction hobs including commercial units. The teal does get your induction pan up to heat incredibly fast. As with all induction hobs though things catch quickly so ensure you keep scraping the bottom of any pan you are using. The controls are well thought out, I also like the fact the power cable is a good length too, with the ability to move the hob where you need it you’re not fixed to one spot int he kitchen. Heck, if the kitchen gets too full why not move to the dining room. Total freedom. I’ll be taking this camping in the summer to save carrying gas.
I like this a lot. I already have one and bought this as a backup as the price has been reduced from the price I paid for my other one.
The only downside that actually doesn’t bother me is that it’s difficult to get a true simmer but it’s good enough for me.
This is good if you’re looking for a portable hob, like a presentation thing on the table, or away in a caravan, or even cooking outside, say alongside a barbecue. Where it lets itself down a bit is in it’s temperature control. Temperature is controlled by pushing the program button to achieve a certain setting, with further control to adjust up or down from that setting. What the hob won’t tell you is what temperature that setting is, just boil, etc, which isn’t ideal. On the other hand, it’s a portable hob so there’s not much point in being too fussy about such things. It does come with a timer, which is great for slow simmers and heating.
The hob heats up very quickly, but then it’s induction so I wouldn’t expect otherwise. It’s small, portable, not too heavy and, most importantly, very easy to keep clean.
Obviously it’s a single hob, so only 1 pan at a time, but that’s more than okay for camping or, as I said, keeping something warm on a dining table ready to serve as part of a feature.
The box it arrived in was quite large and quite off-putting but when unpacked the Tefal induction hob wasn’t nearly as big as I feared.
Working with pans up to about 26cm in diameter I initially couldn’t get the hob to work as a ‘built-in safety device’ prevented the hob from switching on until a pan was actually in place upon the hob. Clearly it would have helped if I’d read the instruction first.
Having read the instructions I found the hob easy to operate and of excellent build quality although the fan was quite noisy, even noisier than my microwave.
Heat settings of 1-7 are available but I have yet to establish what each actually represents in terms of temperature. That said, level 1 is the lowest and level 7 is the highest, so common sense plays its part. Boiling a pan of water took no time at all.
The hob is easy to clean and a welcome addition to my kitchen. As a controllable and portable heat source it will obviously be extremely useful for future caravan or camping holidays.
Induction hobs don’t heat themselves up directly. They work by creating a magnetic field which vibrates the molecules of your pan, thus heating it up from the inside! What you will need though, is a set of pans that have an iron content, otherwise the magnetic field of the hob will have no effect and they will remain cold. The simple test is, if a magnet will stick to your pan, it’s compatible. I tested this hob with a heavy cast iron pan and was stunned – it became very hot almost instantly, and I’ve never seen that happen before.
The hob is well designed and I like the low profile – it could almost be mistaken for a modern set of scales. Tefal have chosen to do away with knobs and buttons, and all the controls are touch sensitive. The positive result is a simple and easy to wipe-clean surface, with sealed electronics for greater reliability and ruggedness. The downside is the occasional difficulty in operating the controls if the surface becomes damp. Keeping it dry is the simple answer, and after a while the habit becomes automatic. A handy nearby towel to wipe off the occasional moisture spill is all you need.
Control options are good, and I like the six easy to access presets along the top row. They increase in temperature from left to right, and are:
* slow cook mode – which replaces the need for a separate slow cooker!
* stew – just below a boil
* boil – self explanatory
* boost – a rapid raising in temperature for fast cooking of meat
* stir fry
* fry – max temp is 220 degC
Alternatively the hob temperature can be adjusted manually, and there’s a handy timer function too (max 3 hours on slow cook, which is a bit short in my opinion)
It’s a clever system which is very responsive, with a similar directness as cooking on gas, which has always been considered by professionals as the gold standard for hobs. I’ve enjoyed using it, and it would be ideal as either a backup hob or for a student bedsit. I could easily keep myself well fed using just this hob and making lots of healthy one-pan main meals, stews and soups if I needed to.
MINUS POINTS
If I was offering feedback to Tefal I’d encourage them to add a temperature display rather than just the meaningless numbers. They could also do something about the annoying beeps every time a button is touched – perhaps an option for visual indication without the beeps!
Those things aside, this particular induction hob from Tefal is quite impressive. It’s attractive, easy to clean and maintain, and being so slim is easy to store out of the way. And in my testing it worked well too. If this were a ten point system I’d be awarding 9/10 because it’s very good, but not quite perfect (shrill beeps annoy me greatly!)
Ceramic induction hobs like this are the future of cooking. If the environmental lobby gets it’s way we won’t have any more gas piped to our houses, and oil and woodburning stoves will be outlawed too (I’m referencing actual official policy discussion here) So, induction hobs will likely become the norm.
Very modern portable induction hob. It is light and slim line (which enables storage to be very easy after use)
My daughter has taken this on holiday with her and so far has not used all the programmes., but reports it is easy to use and she prefers to use it manually rather than preset programmes.
You do need pans compatible with induction though – so that is something to consider and it does not have all the specifications of a static induction hob.
Once I worked out how to use the hob, it was really good — there is a range of “programmes” to do boil, slow cook, stir fry etc. There is also a manual mode, and a timer which works with both manual and programmed modes (I think). The difficulty I have is that the instructions don’t quite tell you how to use the hob.. I have found this with Tefal instructions before and it is very frustrating. The instructions give the essential safety information and point out the features of each button, but they don’t really explain the sequence of buttons to press to make cooking start. There is a start/pause button which is key to this but I still haven’t confidently worked out when I should use it — I have cooked on the hob more by trial and error. There is also something confusing about the way the programmes are divided into two groups of buttons, on either side of the control panel, and seem to be enabled by a different process from each other. I still don’t really understand them but with some random button-pressing they do all work.
Having said all that, once I got the hob on it was very good indeed. Set to boil, it cycles on and off very accurately to keep the pot steadily boiling for however long you set the timer. It is less obvious on the programmes that work below boiling point, but I think this is how the other programmes work — there is a level of heat (expressed in Watts) and a function set, and the hob monitors the temperature of the cooking pan and goes off and on to maintain the right heat.
Cleaning is very easy as this is essentially just a slab of heatproof glass with no parts, cracks, or crevices. Once cooled after cooking you can literally just wipe it clean, and of course it is a plug-in unit so if you are not using it full time it can be put away in a cupboard or drawer.
You need to put it on a heatproof surface so if your worktop is wood or laminate rather than solid stone or composite, you will need a surface protector under it. It has an air intake and a fan to keep the unit from overheating and it is vital to ensure there is space around it for the air to flow properly. It seems sturdy and robust enough and I have always found Tefal a reliable brand — time will tell. This unit is only a single hob but for many people using this for basic cooking or to supplement a full-size hob, this would be effective and doesn’t take up too much space.
We already had an almost identical induction hob from a leading furniture store, which I’d used a bit but we generally use gas at home. Induction has its uses, the main one being that it’s much quicker to heat up.
As per the title, induction hobs are really weird. I have an induction kettle, it’s just a metal thing with a whistle like an old fashioned kettle, and if you put water on it, it starts to heat up instantly like your house kettle would, and within a minute or so it’s whistling, then if you turn the power off, it doesn’t fade like a gas whistling kettle would, it just stops instantly. The instant on/off is the biggest thing with induction hobs.
In terms of controls this hob has more than the other one I have. You have various cooking options, although they all come down to just on/off and pulsing really. I like how it’s more touch sensitive including being able to drag the touch controls to turn up/down the power.
In terms of power, you’d think that being on a 13A plug it wouldn’t be able to compete with a full size “plumbed in” cooker but it absolutely does. I guess because it’s a single hob it can deliver enough power. No issues at all with power.
Size is good but it wasn’t as slim as I expected given it’s named “slim”, I can’t imagine how thick the non slim one was!
Overall a very decent cooking appliance, if you don’t have a cooker or you have one of those old electric ones with the heavy plates or the resistive rings on it, just get one of these. But be warned, you’ll need new pans…almost no pans are induction compatible!
+. Home
+. Garden and outdoor eating
+. Camping or caravanning
We have an Aga at home, which you use for about 8 months of the year and a standard fan oven with 4 ring induction hob for the rest of the year. To be honest, I can see this hob being used quite a lot in the summer both in the kitchen and outdoors, particularly for stir fried food or when used in conjunction with our barbecue for frying onions, cooking sauces etc. My niece has a camper van and I can see her asking to borrow this item when she goes away in the summer too, as being hooked up to main electricity on site, it is a lot easier and safer to use this than the calorie gas stove she has fitted.
The unit is about the size of a latop computer and a bit thicker. It has 6 preset heating controls plus the option to control the heat individually i.e. to turn up or down if the preset is not right. I particularly like the timer function, which allows you to slowly simmer items if you wish; a bit like a slow cooker, for up to three hours.
I have used this item so far to stir fry, primarily as Aga’s are useless for stir frying food as standard woks are not flat enough. I can see it being used for quite a lot more, particularly as it is light enough to be easily taken into the garden and could even be used when camping in a tent with suitable hook up.
So 4 stars? Actually it is closer to 5 than 4, but not close enough to warrant that extra star. Yes it is very good, it is compact, the controls are well laid out and it produces almost instant heat. It has variable heat control, is easy to clean and even has a timer. Price though could be a bit of a stickler for those who only need it for occasional use and they might be better suited to purchasing a simple, cheap gas camping stove for less than a quarter of the price OR examining one of the alternative electric models of similar design and style, most of which are cheaper.
If you must have Tefal products, then this is the one for you. If you are just seeking a single electric hob for occasional use, there are other brands available which you might wish to consider too, with similar branded items being just a bit cheaper.
The hob is a good size, not taking up too much space whilst being sturdy when in use. It heats up very quickly and the temperature control seems responsive. It does have a number of pre set settings such as stew, boil etc, although to be honest it’s easier just to use the manual mode.
the hob does have a timer built in, which whilst handy, turns th hob off when the timer goes off. I just wanted to know when 5 minutes were up.
One final thing, as this is an induction hob, it needs a pan that is induction compatible. About half of mine are. If yours aren’t, you’ll also need new pans!
Older folk will remember M1 and M2 first appearing on gadgets forty years ago. Preset user settings stored for future one click use. But not on this super modern item. Each time you have to go through same rigmarole. Beep beep beep beep. And more beeps.
This is really great for extra cooking space in our kitchen. We eat a lot of stir fries and because the wok heats up quickly this makes for great cooking as it is important for the wok to be very hot. It is also good for frying eggs as these can be cooked in half the time of a conventional hob. All cooking pans need to be flat-bottomed for them to work properly.
Very impressed with this item and knowing its a Tefal product gives extra confidence.
I didn’t know free standing induction hobs were a thing until I was invited to try this. It came in a smaller than expected box but was soon up and running but simply plugging it in. Works well with the appropriate (magnetised) pans up to 26cm and I have used it for frying and stir frying with excellent results. Controls are slightly over complicated but you soon get used to them and the whole unit is both portable and easy to clean. Would be great for caravans or perhaps student digs also.
I already have a similar hob, but I wanted to try this one as I often need a second hob when cooking for guests.
Plug in, switch on and you have the option of pushing a programme button, or tapping directly on the temperature control slider to get you started. There are 3 programmes, set to levels 3, 6 and 7.
I don’t know what the temperatures mean in degree centigrade (or Fahrenheit) as there is no degree scale.
7 is the highest, and 1 the lowest.
This model has a fan, as do most of them. It is as loud as a microwave, which sounds about the same as my other one (a Nuwave pic gold).
At settings 2 and 1 the heat is delivered by a pulse rather than a continuous flow of power. At 3 and above the flow is continuous.
This plus is actually quite annoying, as it makes it difficult to maintain a steady simmer.
All in all it’s a good effort, but I think my other hob with temperature control (by 5 degree C steps, and delivering constant power at all settings) is better.
If you only want something to pull out for now and again use – say boiling veg for Christmas dinner, then this one would do.
As I use my hob every day, I find that I need temperature control as a ‘must’, rather than a luxury.
I’m surprised to say that I hadn’t previously been aware of the existence of these stand alone hobs before but this could become really invaluable. It cooks stuff just as well as my conventional gas hob, it’s really quite light so is extremely portable, it’s not huge but certainly big enough as an additional heating/cooking device and the induction design makes it very safe. You connect it to the mains and it’s very easy clean. Brilliant.
I can’t tell you the times that I have been cooking a big meal (e.g. Christmas) and had a fifth pan waiting to go on my four hob unit – this is the ultimate fix – a fifth hob you can get out when you need. On the other end of the scale there are so many single people in flats these days that could manage with one hob and a microwave oven, and THIS is the hob they need.
Having established why I think this is a great idea, let me also tell you how well it works. Firstly put an appropriate pan on the hob (for an induction heating plate) and touch the on button (usual symbol) – in fact all the controls are touch units – no moving switches! There are a number of pre-programmed settings – slow/ stew/ boil and boost/ stir fry or fry and you can pause cooking or alter the temperature. Simple controls, easy to access and straight forward and because it is an induction plate it is safer to use too!
Simply turn on and the internal fan kicks in so you know it is working – touch and you are away! This works simply and efficiently and is super-easy to keep clean. What a great hob and the well engineered fulfilment of a great idea. I love this and am hopeful that this Tefal product and I will live together for many years to come!
if you have a range or cooker which is turned off in the summer months-you will love this. Its a great alternative and provides a summer hot plate opportunity which heats up and is controllable-fast and simple-if you spill anything on the surface make sure you clean immediately.
As in my current accommodation I do not have a proper kitchen, I have been on the lookout for a decent electric hotplate – I have tried a couple of ‘standard’ ones, but don’t find that they maintain temperature well enough for all purposes, which is frustrating. As this is an induction hob, you must first make sure that you have suitable pans – basically they need to be either stainless steel or have bases which you can stick a magnet to, as that is pretty much how induction hobs work. This is a smart-looking glass product, with touch buttons rather than dials, and doesn’t take up much room but is surprisingly heavy. It heats up quickly, and definitely gets to higher temperatures than the other free-standing electric hobs I have tried. It does have lots of presets for slow cooking and the like, but I’m a simple creature when it comes to cooking and I just have it on hot, so haven’t tested those properly, I’m afraid. Being glass-topped, it is easy to wipe clean, and smart enough to have sitting out while small enough to hide away (once cool!) if you wish.
Very impressed with this product, definitely worth the extra cost.
This is a very good stand alone induction hob that does need mains power to plug into. But it would be great an en emergency hob if you need it during home refurbishments, or when you have extra guests to cater for. It could also come in handy for caravan use. It heats up well and has a useful keep warm setting too. It is easy to clean and easy to use. A very good stand by to have if you need it.
This Tefal Slim Induction cooker is really versatile. We used it outdoors alongside our BBQ to fry up onions and veg, I tend to prefer using the manual controls, but once cooked, the slow cook or keep hot option was spot on.
Great for caravans and campers, holiday homes and outdoor cooking … the only pre-requisite is power.
Useful to have an extra hob at busy times like Christmas, and will be called into action when the gas is cut off for a day next week.
Most of my existing pans worked OK … and will take anything between 10 and 26cms.
The hottest setting was good enough to stir-fry but haven’t tried to maintain a rolling boil yet … will report back.
Compact and useful, the only very minor issue was with the instructions … not very good, but being a man I ignored them for my first play.
9/10 … happy with it. If space isn’t an issue, the non-slim version is much cheaper.
This is a stand-alone induction hob with a single heated ring. It is designed to plug in to a standard electrical outlet via a UK plug. I guess the unit could be used when a kitchen is being renovated or possibly in student accommodation. The manufacturer suggests using it for cooking at the table and, of course, it provides an extra cooking ring if needed for large and complex meals.
In use it works pretty well with all the usual indication hob functionality such as instant heating and an easily cleaned glass cooking surface. The controls are all touch sensitive buttons rather than traditional nobs to turn. This means the hob is easier to clean but I found that the buttons didn’t consistently respond to touch. As well as an on/off button and an adjustable heat button there are several preset hob heating levels each with its own button – for simmering, stewing, boiling, frying and stir frying. There’s also a timer button. To be honest since a lot of these settings depend on the size of the pan and the amount of food in them I didn’t find the presets too helpful and the manual heat adjustment doesn’t respond quite as smoothly and sensitively as I’d like.
Overall though the unit is smart, easy to clean, and has the same functionality as a full-sized induction hob. It’s certainly better than a ceramic hob in terms of the heat being confined to the base of the pan, and the old-style electric plate hobs. Just make sure you have suitable saucepan(s) to work with it.
Four stars.
The presets on this Tefal are a doddle to use. Initially I wondered if it would sweat onions ok, as you can’t turn down the manual preset gradually like an ordinary hob, but the Manual preset has different increments of heat and it sweated the onions perfectly. Boiling up rice and adding frozen veg later on is so easy..The Boil preset boils quickly, you then press the Manual preset, set it’s timer and leave it to get on with it, the timer will beep when it’s ready then just chuck in the frozen veg, press the Boil preset, when it’s boiling (which is usually really fast) just press the Manual preset, set the timer …it’s done. Absolutely fantastic, I love it.
We were struggling with a hop top as the elements were old and it was costing a fortune to cook on, But now we have the Tefal IH201840 Everyday Induction Hob, and our Mediterranean style diet is back on track as this machine heats up and cools as quickly, we are now saving up our pension to get another one.
Buy one you will never regret i
and by this i mean, rather than the programs that it goes by and its levels, it really should have the actual temperature on the screen so that the end user could know what they need it to be at rather than guessing.
the program modes ie stew slow and boil, should be easily selected just by pressing onto the item itself rather than havign to keep pushing the programe button below them.
the temperature control should also be a case of the user doing a press down for the levels to go up or down with easy rather than the user having to keep tapping the option, which is also irritating because of the beep it does each time.
apart from that its an amazing product.
The device is extremely good at accomplishing its basic function, which is to heat pans of food quickly and without too much waste of heat to the surroundings, i.e. efficiently and hence cheaply. As claimed, it works perfectly well with pans down to 12cm and up to 24cm. I wondered whether it might baulk at my cast iron casserole, much cheaper than a le Creuset and hence with an enamelled slightly uneven base, however it coped perfectly.
Unlike some reviewers, I did not seriously expect the fancy functions claiming to maintain given temperatures in the pan to work well, if at all, so I was not disappointed. A moment of thought shows that no such function can be reliable unless it is controlled by an temperature probe which is actually in the food, water or oil. Presumably the thermometer is under the glass in the centre of the cooking area, thus the best it can do is estimate the temperature of the centre of the base of the pan, which will be strongly affected by such matters as the size of the pan; its food content; and the precise construction of the base and will certainly be subject to some delay in response to temperature changes as the heat passes through the glass. Thus it is hardly surprising that the amount of water, milk, oil or whatever has to be dialled into the cooker for the automatic programmes to have any chance of working and that even then they are somewhat hit and miss. Having said that, I have obtained satisfactory results browning onions in a 28cm pan at Stir Fry setting F1. Stewing, however, is quite unsatisfactory, holding my 18cm pan at only 75C. On boil setting the cooker does not turn off even after the water has been boiling for several minutes in the 18cm pan. I have not dared to try the milk or deep fry settings. The upshot is as I say that the fancy functions are mostly not worth bothering with.
Other reviewers have mentioned the lack of control at low heat settings. Here I must agree. It is silly to have such fine control at all of 1500W, 1700W, 1900W and 2100W at high settings, when the low settings are just 450W, 600W and 850W. The lowest of these is not low enough for most simmering jobs and the gradations are insufficient. I would have hoped for settings available from maybe 250W through to 650W in steps of 50W then 100W.
From limited experience I cannot be sure of chapter and verse here, but my distinct impression is that even when not using the timer the cooker still turns itself off after 2 hours. It certainly seems to do that on the stew setting, making that even less useful for slow cooking.
My own need and expectation was for a powerful hob which would heat up the pan rapidly and efficiently and boil the carrots for 10 minutes. This inexpensive hotplate does that very well indeed. So I just knock off 1 star, not for the silly programmes but for the lack of control at low settings.
Been using this daily for over a month now. Definitely worth the investment, was originally going to get a cheaper option but glad I didn’t. Boils water super quick with induction. You DO need an induction pan as well.
Down sides; it’s noisy. Nothing Horrendous, but you’ll definitely notice when it’s in lol.
Overall very happy with this
It arrived as scheduled and looks really good. It has a safety feature which I was not even aware of when I decided to go with this brand instead of other. Really important thing. Even if it is switched on it wont heat until the pot is placed on top. This assured me that it wont start functioning because by mistake I switched it on when cleaning. I cant tell more about the durability yet as I just have it for days but I will complete my review after some time passed. So far I am very happy with this purchase!
Bought this as my home is using the electric hob and the heating is very slow, bought this for stir fry which works very well. However, as many other say, the low heat sometimes is still too high. Also, some function doesn’t work as the way I wish. e.g., the water boiling function, it doesn’t really stop after the water is boiling, but it will still keep going for a while. Not a big problem though as I usually use the manual function anyway. It’s easy to clean as well.
Make sure your pans are suitable for induction use, boils water very quick, heats up a lot quicker than my old electric hob.
I find the manual override suits my style of
Cooking more, you can have it on P9 to bring water to the boil then drop it down to say p4 for a rolling boil.
Watch out if your shallow frying as it was smoking my oil in seconds.
I think this product is very good . I like the power setting I used it manually with a Tefal Induction frying pan response was as good as my gas hob. I was concerned that my large frying pan was to big and that It would be detrimental to the hob function as I bought the pan before the hob. I should have not been concerned as It works Perfectly.
My only thought is that the control surface which you use to switch the hob on is a plastic film over switching controls which I considered could have been better quality. I read a review where somebody thought this was a protection film which you peeled off , not the case.
Given the price you get what you pay for.
I will also use it in my motor home.
Bought this as an extra cooking facility as I have an Aga and this will be useful when I want to conserve heat. A bit early to tell how good it is. Have just boiled water so far and found that very good. Intended to keep it on top of a built-in 2 ring ceramic hob which is more or less alongside my Aga. However, having read the instructions I’m not quite sure whether I can do that. Felt it would heat up more quickly than my 2 ring hob and cool down a lot faster. Also when doing a lot of cooking I could move the induction hob away from the 2-ring hob and use all three electric rings if necessary.
Bought for my mother in sheltered housing where kitchen doesn’t have a cooker. Ideal for boiling veg and making stews, one -pot cooking which she doesn’t want to use the microwave for. It’s quite slim so doesn’t add much height when it’s on the work surface – important when the user isn’t very tall. Easy to clean and safe to use.
Every one of my pots and pans works on it, even the small one I use for boiling water for tea, so there is no need to worry you will have to replace all your cookware.
If I could change one thing it would be that it beeps loudly when you turn it on and whenever you press a button… I could do without the beeps. A silent setting would be perfect!!
For the price, this is a great introduction to induction jobs. It heats as quickly as the claims, which is amazing. However, I have to agree with some of the other reviews that the lowest manual heat setting is not low enough. It seems this model works in a very binary fashion… the magnets are either “on” or “off”, and temperature/levels are determined by intermittently turning the magnets on and off. For the lower settings, the frequency of the on/off switching is slower. But that means when it’s on, it’s ON, providing instantaneous full heat for a second, followed by unpowered resting. This results in the contents of your pot boiling hard for a second, then stopping, in intervals. If you’re trying to slowly simmer a stew, for example, it doesn’t quite work as you’d want. On the other hand, the hob does work very well for high-temperature cooking, and it brings things to the boil as quickly as all the sensational claims. And as far as this particular brand/model is concerned, I think it’s well-made at a good price.
There are definitely pros and cons to this product. In our in-between-kitchen-demolition-and-renovation state, it is a welcome addition to our make-shift kitchen. But if this example is anything to go by, I’m not sure I want to be limited to induction cooking for the rest of my life.
UPDATE: I’m back, five months later, with an amendment to my review. I now know why there is a maximum pan size for this hob: If your pan is too big, it will come into contact with the plastic edging at the top and bottom of the cook surface, and when your pan is very hot, the plastic edging will melt into a gooey mess. As it cools, it will loosely resemble volcanic rock in appearance and texture (that is, it’s very hard and rough). I know because I did this. And then I was worried about scratching my other cookware if I continued to use the hob. So I bought some high-heat rated silicone adhesive and smeared it over the damaged bits of the hob. It’s not the prettiest fix (see photo), but it’s a fix. My cooker works and my pans are safe. But I’m tempted to rate the hob down another star because I don’t know why they didn’t consider the possibility of the melting that plastic edging. I won’t take another star, though, because they do say not to use pans the size I used. Technically, it was my fault, but…
My only regret is not getting one earlier. Don’t think me crazy but I am seriously considering getting another two. I will be moving into temporary accommodation soon and would prefer 2 more of these than a permanent ceramic hob which is my financial alternative.
When I switched it on I had to put a pan on and tell it that it was a small pan, now when I try to boil milk it doesn’t overflow, It’s easy to control, clean and the automatic settings are just amazing. Hence I will be getting two more of these and not another make.
Shame Tefal don’t make a double ring.
It’s also very portable, very very easy to clean, and very aesthetic.
There is only one (tiny) downside – the lowest setting is not that low and when cooking small quantities, it will keep the food in a low boil, and not just hot.
The most notable feature of this hob, is the digital dial instead of a knob from 1 to 9 which truly helps regulate the desired heat.
This is an excellent little hob for boiling and frying. The only reason I’ve given it 4 stars is because it doesn’t go to a temperature as low as my 4 ring electric hob. Our 2 previous induction hobs had a keep warm function. This allowed sauces or casseroles to sit on heat for hours and infuse flavour. This one will boil stuff dry even at the lowest temperature if you don’t watch it constantly. Its good for the price though and will be great in my caravan.
I bought this for my son who has very limited cooking facilities in his flat. This is a super convenient addition to his kitchen, easy to put away when not needed but quick and efficient when an extra hob ring is needed. The smooth surface makes it very easy to keep clean and the controls are all highly visible and easy to access. I can imagine these will be really useful over Christmas when there is always extra demand for space on the hob!
My one concern about buying this product was a warning I read somewhere on the Internet that the hob should be kept in stand-by mode and not turned off at the mains when not in use as this could damage it. This is nonsense. I have always turned it off at the mains to avoid consuming stand-by energy, and it continues to work perfectly.
If I had the space I would definitely add a second one.
This is an outstanding induction hob which plugs into a normal socket. I usually cook on an AGA but turn it off during July/Aug as it gets so hot in the kitchen. I have used an electric plug in hob for any non bbq cooking I do, but it was getting old and seemed to be losing power. I therefore invested in this new induction hob. It brings things to the boil so fast!! The only down side is that you need to have steel bottomed pans – but I have several of those so no problem. I did need to get another frying pan but found an excellent one in Ikea for 14 which works perfectly on the induction hob. Would recommend highly.
Well blow me down! This little hob actually is a pleasure to use with fairly accurate temperature detection of the pans and a very good range of temperature control that actually seems to work. The preset functions are not really useful but do give you the option to take both eyes off the hob if you wish.
The biggest bugbear is that the timer defaults to 15 minutes and would be better defaulting to 0 but on the whole this is highly recommended
I already own a range cooker with an induction hob but hadn’t noticed there were no timing controls, which has been annoying as previous hobs Ive owned were all capable of turning off after a set time.
So I decided to buy this for slow cooking where you want to forget it for a few hours, and using a pressure cooker where a few minutes over time and missing an alarm can ruin your dinner.
This is great! Not only do I have auto shut off but it seems it has modes that turn it off when it reaches boiling point.
For such a low price it makes me wonder why the range manufacturer couldn’t have included the features on at least one ring of my expensive cooker! It’s also small enough to hide away easily when not needed.
Full marks so far Tefal 🙂
These are fantastic!! Nice even heating pattern compared to two Philips models that are more than twice the price! The Tefal even has a manual On/Off mode.. Something most other models don’t have, but instead have programmed food types that adjust the cooking up and down as Time elapses.. I found others impossible to use. I’ve had these tefals a week (I bought 2) and I’m really happy with them, they deserve a bonus star for being fantastic and affordable!
Only recently bought but this is an amazing piece of kit. My first introduction to Induction cooking but I have a small kitchen so I decided to try using induction before I revamp my kitchen although that did mean buying some big frying/saute pans although my normal saucepans did pass the magnet test. It really is simple to use and you will get used to very quickly. Press a button and set the temperature and you even have a timer which for some of the dishes I cook is a great benefit. It boils in amazing quick time. I’ve mainly used ‘manual’ so far but the ‘boil milk’ and other facilities are so handy and clever. Easy to clean – delighted.
Works well and does mostly what I want. However the lowest setting is too high to give a slow simmer. This is in contrast to the Neff Induction Hob which I had in my last house – I was able to “slow cook” on that without the risk of the pan going dry. On moving house 5 months ago to a house without an induction hob I bought 2 Tefal Everyday Induction Hobs to solve this problem for me – it hasn’t done!
Am I doing something wrong?
Simple to use, just turn it on, press manual, and select the power level. There are a couple of other pre-programmed modes but I haven’t use these because there’s no need. Unlike my previous experience of electric hobs, power change on this is pretty much instantaneous.
As with all induction hobs, you need a compatible pan.
4 stars instead of 5 because…well…it’s just a hob…no need to get carried away. Also I haven’t tried any others to compare it with.
