In my opinion product and price ratio is really good, you get what you paid for though (chuck is not German or Swiss top quality, but for home users it’s ok). As the chuck is so cheap you need to do some chamfering and cleaning yourself.
This 4″chuck, from vevor was clean and ready to bolt on. Went thru all reviews before. There were 0 issues with this one. I have a central machinery mini lathe and a c.m. lathe/ mill combo….it fit both machine s with no problem. Did not have to be taken apart, like the reviews said..?…
Made for better rolled out welds and faster turn around on simple parts assembly. Chuck holds up to 8″ flanges on ID bite. Works well for what I needed!
Let’s start with the positive:
-160mm sc 3-jaw for under 100 bucks
-accurately mated to my spindle flange adapter
-holds the work .001″ concentricity when tightening the three pinions evenly
The Negative:
-the mating surface finish was terrible. I had to dress several dings that created excessive runout.
-Rust on the inside! I had to completely disassemble and clean.
-full of un-deburred wire edges at every vertex.
Bottom line: this quality is risky at best and should be expected at this price. You should expect to pay at least double from a reputable source. If the work concentricty and runout were looser, I would have sent it back. In this case I was willing to provide the TLC needed to make this an acceptable tool.
bought this for an older 6″ Atlas lathe I inherited. It fits and works as expected.
I see no problem with this chuck. Since several reviews indicated a malfunction because of debris inside the chuck, I immediately disassembled it upon receipt. Disassembly was simple. One review stated the jaws didn’t close evenly. I think those jaws were removed and were not reassembled in the correct order.
I found one small chip inside which would have never caused a problem. The chuck was well oiled, wrapped in plastic, and packaged securely.
I am in the process of turning the backing plate, so I can not yet attest as to the trueness of the jaws, but, I don’t foresee a problem. The OD of the chuck is larger than 6″. It measured 6.424″. There is one plastic piece attached. It seems to be a “dust cover” on the back side and has no mechanical function. The jaws are numbered, (1,2,3) but, the chuck itself is not numbered. I plan to just number stamp it myself.
I can see this chuck giving years of service. I feel I got a good deal.
I adapted this to fit an antique Southbend lathe. I inherited this from my father. The 4 jaw chuck worked for me for years but it took a lot of time to use . I had to make my own mount for this chuck and it came out great and the chuck is centered really nicely. I would have given it five stars but I had to disassemble the chuck and clean and lube it up to make it open and close smoothly.
I bought the 10 inch and its good runout is good one piece body the only iffy is the plastic cover on the back for the ring gear cover but it seals good with the plastic so maybe not a fault ?
Usually a roll of the dice with import items, but this one was good right out of the box (after a good cleaning). I’d buy again.
