I purchased this for recording Band rehearsals, I use the wide pickup pattern, and it really does sound good, provided everyone watches there individual sound levels, the only issue, is the menu system, in getting to the songs you want to listen to, kinda clumsy, but once you get the hang of it, it works, the battery life is good, for the price it works for me, this is the second one I purchased, the first one got damaged by the dog ( there not good chew toys!!!)

Diesen muss man dazu kaufen.

It’s very versatile and records nice Audio. I also paired it with the Sony Compact Stereo Lavalier Microphone ECMLV1 and it was great. Just make sure to set this unit to power the mic, or it won’t work.

I was a bit sceptical about buying this… I remember having had a Zoom product that really wasn’t up to the mark a while ago and was so disappointed with it that I returned it. However, now needing something that was good quality and compact, I thought I’d give this a try and I must say that the sound quality is surprisingly good and, given that I’m guessing that’s what most people’s first priority must be, I think it will very likely fit the bill.

It’s a little smaller than I expected it would be, but that’s not a criticism. It actually feels quite solid in use and is undoubtedly made using high quality components. Recording in WAV modes gives me at least the quality I’d expect from a much more expensive (and not quite so portable) studio setup, and playback via the line out socket is really very good indeed, with voice quality crisp and true.

I must admit I found the original menu setup a little fiddly, but it certainly didn’t pose a huge problem and although I haven’t driven it’s first set of batteries to exhaustion yet, I’m really hoping that date and time data will be retained by the system settings between future battery changes. I was also rather expecting to receive a remote lead with the recorder too, but not so, and 36 for the accessories kit which includes it seems a bit steep, particularly when reviews of the mic stand on this site don’t look so great.

Still, the H2n is a good bit of kit by anyone’s standards and I’m sure it will prove to be a good workhorse for me.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIt starts up fast, so it’s great for reporters. I make a podcast called FOGO: Fear of Going Outside, which is a nature show by the most reluctant host ever. I used this mic to record all the interviews in Season 1 Episode 1, before I knew anything about sound – and they turned out great.

I still don’t understand the Zoom h4 and h6; I just don’t know enough about sound to keep XLR/TRS straight and troubleshoot in the field, but with this recorder, I don’t really need to learn. It’s also so durable, I throw it in my purse (it’s lightweight, too) to take to my comedy gigs or speaking panels just in case, and more than once, it saved someone’s recording when their primary equipment failed. They just plugged it into their soundboard to record. It’s the piece of backup equipment that doesn’t feel like just backup equipment.

Plus, I’ve used it for 4 years with no real signs of wear, whereas my Zoom F1’s have seen better days in the same amount of time and field work. This little workhorse should be in everyone’s sound kit.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought this to record a cappella rehearsals, and for the most part is is amazing. The mic setup is super convenient and versatile both for recording the group from the audience’s perspective and for when we’re standing in a circle. The auto 2-channel surround is amazing for a true snapshot of what we sound like in a circle, and with the configurable 4-channel surround you can make recordings where you can rotate the sound during playback as if turning to focus on individual people. So overall – I’ve never found another tool like this, and it’s really great.

The one downside is that it is susceptible to EM interference. I live in a city with a fair amount of radio congestion and probably some power line noise and that kind of thing. I have an old H4 that was really good at rejecting all of that and provided a great noise floor (but of course only had the X-Y pair built in). But with the H2n I’m finding the noise floor is not quite as good as the H4’s overall, and also that there are particular locations in the park nearby where it audibly picks up weird 1kHz (plus octave harmonics) interference. (I’ve attached a spectrograph showing the faint horizontal lines at 1k intervals.) I’m not sure if it’s a 1kHz external signal that isn’t being filtered, or if there’s just some strong EM/RF power there that is causing the internal circuitry of the H2n to fail in this oddly specific way.

I actually returned my first H2n thinking it was partially defective, but the replacement, from a totally different manufacturing lot, behaved identically. So I think it’s just an inherent issue with this model (and with my neighborhood’s electromagnetic fields!). But I kept the replacement because I actually still love it! And it’s been amazingly useful overall. But if anyone from Zoom is reading this, I’d gladly pay double for equal convenience but improved performance.

Super convenient, but some interference issues

Been using Zoom H1n for Zoom Webinars for over 2 years. ZERO complaints. Clear, sharp, and natural voice.

    ==========
    Zoom H1n VS. Zoom H2n:
    ==========

Zoom H2n can be 0% to 15% sharper. In most cases, it’s near 0%. Depends on what words are spoken, and your voice. In short: H2n has negligible improvement over H1n, at least in real life. People listen to you to learn; not to assess quality of your voice. That’s why I say “Real life difference is practically negligible/unnoticeable”. It’s only noticeable to you (the speaker who is doing DELIBERATE sound comparison).

Zoom H2n is though 25%+- more sensitive. Meaning Zoom H2n’s Gain of 9 will be about 25% louder then Zoom H1n’s Gain of 9. But again, if you’re doing Webinars, this won’t make a difference. If recording discussion in live class, this 25% gain will make a positive difference.

SUMMARY: In 99% of cases, there’s no quality difference between Zoom H1n and Zoom H2n. Get whichever form factor attracts you.

    ==========
    Zoom H2n VS. Rode NT-USB
    ==========

Holy smokes. Rode NT-USB is another level entirely. Per my perception, about 10x better.

Better means: Rode NT-USB is even clearer, dynamic/uplifting, pleasing to listen to long time, bringing out your true personality, and even adding some cheer to your voice.

For this reason, we have resorted to using Rode NT-USB for all Zoom Webinars from now on.

But saying that, would switch back to to Zoom H1/H2 in a heartbeat, and GLADLY if Rode NT-USB suddenly disappeared.

Great value for money and sound quality for its price. Obviously if you crank the mic gain quite up you’re going to have quite some noise from the pre-amps but compared to its predecessor, the original H2 it’s so much better and versatile. It’s actually got 4 microphones built-in and not 5 like advertised. The advert is more to make you understand the way the polar pattern works….sort of. Its actually got 2 microphones set in a X/Y configuration and 2 more microphones set in M/S where one microphone picks up the Mid signal and another microphone set right above it that works in a figure 8 pattern that picks up the Side signal.
You can also control the gain of the Side microphone letting you adjust it to you liking. Or you can also record in full gain and then use the free VST plugin from Zoom to edit the gain in post.

Overall for its price it really is a great and portable recorder which is very versatile (I use it mainly for field recordings), with excellent battery life that lasts ages and with lots of cool features. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Man muss natrlich richtig auspegeln.

I bought this to make quick off the cuff recordings , just when I feel like it.

Some of the recordings are nearly as good as my more troublesome ones. Stereo XY is my best setting and manual gain and vocal compression on , sorted good to go!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersMarchio zoom, una garanzia…

    Consigliato.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFor it’s price i think its a great product, however I hate the fact that it comes without:
USB Cable (which you need to copy files onto a computer if you don’t have a card reader)
Wind jammer (muffler) – You will not be able to use this outside / whilst moving because of the wind noise (it’s a “portable” device)
SD card – If I am not mistaken you can only record a very short test recording without a SD card
Any sort of a mount / strap.

Also, the hardware is quite dated. The transfer rate of the data over mini-usb cable is approx 4MB/s which is extremely slow for today’s standards (I think it’s USB 1.0).

I understand all this is likely to keep the product price low, but at least the cable and wind jammer should be included, as without these addons the recorder is not fully functional.

Please don’t treat the above as a deal breaker as with all these accessories the recorder becomes one of the most affordable devices that will provide a quality recording, I want to warn you though that you need to get several extras with it.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersWe use it in the centre of the rehearsal room, just back from the drums, th eauto gain function keeps it sane. We are loud, and i mean loud loud, but this little machine keeps it all very listenable and is a gem. The quick press record on the front is also top notch as to cut our some of the chit chat and just records the music when jamming etc. We use a small tripod which screws into the bottom we had that lying around and it fit and works a treat. Getting the data off is easy too wavs and mp3s need no faffing and are easily dragged into almost all software – wavelab that comes with it looks good, but already using protools so not really tested that. A great piece of kit.

    – SD (pagata 18): https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B003P3MCXW/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    – caricabatterie (pagato 38): https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B01HXXFSC6/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersQuesto registratore un oggetto fantastico.

I bought it to make general stand-alone music recordings and to improve the sound quality with my DSLR video sound. I’ve recently bought a lav-mic. to accompany it.

I have used the Zoom to record speech, the Zoom mic as a USB mic. into my Mac and more recently with the lav-mic. to record whilst mobile. The SD card works well, I simply drop the card into the Mac process the file in Audition and then sync the sound to the DSLR.

For the price I think it’s great.

A great piece of kit, easy to use and sound quality is good.

Don’t like the fact that the mic is “live” when on standby ready to play back through an amplifier even though the mic input volume is set to zero.

Really happy with this. I bought this to practice singing, I’m only a beginner and i use this with headphones so when i sing i can hear my voice as others hear it, the ability to record and play back my singing practice also really helps. It may not have the quality of a similar priced studio mic but it is very close and much more versatile and portable. I don’t think i will use anything else for a number of years, it is more than adequate for practice and amateur you-tubers.

I bought this product on a different website in 2017 and as a USB microphone, it does its job wonderfully. That said, I have to dock one star for a flaw in the product.

If your H2n microphone is hooked up to your computer via USB and you’re recording from the Line In port, interference will make your recording unusable. You can still record without interference if you unplug the USB cable, insert batteries, record to the SD card and manually import the files into your audio editing software. But for recording directly to your computer from your H2n’s Line In port, this product is unsuitable.

Adequate for impromptu voice and piano recording: quality is good for this price point. I found it easy to operate. Battery life not great, but I was using rechargeables, and changed them probably well before the device would have had insufficient power to work.

Bought for uni, really easy to use after a couple of tester recordings, has a lot of really useful features. A tad on the pricey side as you also have to buy the memory card and all the accessories separately but overall good quality and is built to last.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersBefore writing my review, I would clear it beforehand, that the device doesn’t ship with a SD card out of the box. Also, warranty or after-sales service for this product is quite doubtful.
The product comes in a nice packaging, Wavelab LE and Cubase LE, both are bundled with this product. Recording is flawless, no compromise in output, but overdubbing is not available in this model, that’s ridiculous because even the lower priced H1n has overdubbing function. Recorded file might not sound good in the recorder itself, but it does sound crystal clear in other devices, all the mids highs and lows are perfectly captured in the recording !
For extra functionality and protection, it is recommended to get the AP-H2n accessory pack, which is sold separately. The complete package costed me around 16k, but it is worth the price, and delivers what you need.
Alkaline batteries were supplied, and they had a great backup, though Ni-Mh batteries are somewhat less in backup when compared to them. Adapter is included in the accessory pack, but it is more of a useless item, since this product is designed for outdoor work. Included tripod is good enough to hold it firmly. The remote is a great accessory, as it has pause button. The buttons on the recorder as well as the remote are carefully designed, they don’t make a click sound on pressing.
My final verdict : Go for this Zoom product if you are not concerned for warranty services, and need a professional recording system without burning a hole in the pocket. 🙂

Having owned Olympus dictaphones I thought I’d try out the Zoom H2n/UK Handy Recorder. I’d advise potential buyers to see some Youtube videos about the H2n but you won’t be disappointed.
In comclusion, from my own experience in using and getting quality results from this unit, all I will add is less is more

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIf you are looking at this product for basic recording, podcast, field recording and making your own samples. It is very good at all of them. Read the manual and consider getting extras pack its really needed I think. Comes with some good basic software which have other product upgrades. So all good really. P. S it does not come with a SD card so factor that in to 😉

Golden Review Award: 43 From Our UsersThis is an absolutely fantastic little unit. It came out half a decade ago but even despite huge technological advancements in other areas (smartphones, computers, etc) this thing really does holds its own still and will be a great product for years to come.

This thing is like a little Swiss army knife for general purpose recording. You can record high quality tracks directly on the unit itself, you can import these tracks to your favorite DAW (digital audio workstation) for further processing, you can use it as a great little USB mic, and it even doubles as an audio interface with a stereo input. There are some great options for mic configurations. You can configure it for X/Y, mid-side, 2 channel, and 4 channel, easily adjusted with the turn of a little dial. A pair of handy LED lights tell you which side (or sides) of the mics are active. These same lights will flicker when the signal is clipping, which is a very nice visual indicator. Furthermore, it can be mounted on a tripod or you can buy the super cheap mic stand adapter for around $10 which allows you to mount this unit on a mic stand (plus it doubles as a useful handle). It has an onboard speaker so you can listen back to recordings, or you can plug in a pair of headphones to the line out. The on board speaker is terrible, but what do you expect? It’s a recording device, not a mini boom box. You can also plug in a remote which is useful for creating WAV markers. I like this because with a DAW that supports it allows you to easily navigate through your recordings.

There are some useful options, such as auto-gain (to help prevent clipping and such), a compressor/limiter, a low cut filter, and a few other options.

This unit operates on a pair of AA batteries and it’s amazing how long the batteries last given the quality of recordings. Zoom claims about 20 hours of battery life which I find to be a bit optimistic, but even still at around ~15 hours the battery life is great.

The interface on the device is quite nice. It has a backlit LED screen and navigation is simple with a selector switch that allows you to move up/down or press it in to make a selection. It only took me a few minutes to get used to it.

This recorder uses a single SD card for storage, up to 32GB which is plenty adequate for my needs. I record at 44.1 kHz / 24 bit (any higher is overkill for something like this IMO) and with a 32GB SD card I can get about 33.5 hours of recording. If you record at CD quality, which is 44.1 kHz / 16 bit, then you get a little over 50 hours of recording time. The max setting of 96 kHz / 24 bit will give you over 15 hours of time, and if you don’t mind recording in mp3 then 128 kbps (said to be CD quality, but debatable) gives you over 550 hours! 256 kbps will give you half that.

I primarily use this for recording band rehearsals and even demos. Recording rehearsals in the past was annoying, either I would use a smartphone which would provide terrible recordings, or I would use a laptop, dedicated recording interface, and microphones, which did give me better recordings but it became really cumbersome dragging that stuff around to every practice/demo session. Plus it’s annoying dealing with all the extra wires/cables and such. Also, I believe it’s a law that when you introduce a computer into the mix then you’re going to have glitches and other issues. The H2n solves all my problems, all I have to do is plop it down and hit record and I feel confident that my recordings are going to sound good every time.

The negatives are pretty minor. The biggest issue being that it only has a single universal gain knob, it would really be nice to have separate gains for each side of the mic. A minor issue is that it doesn’t come with a USB cable in the box (my H6 did), I have plenty of USB cables lying around but including one in the box would have been useful for a lot of people. It does feel a little cheap-ish being all plastic, but I haven’t had any issues with durability yet, though thankfully I haven’t dropped it. Also for the best results you really need to mount it on something, whether that be a tripod or mic stand (using the adapter, not included), recording while handling the device introduces a lot of noise, though this is probably just the nature of the device.

Despite the minor issues noted above, this is an easy 5-star product. 5 stars doesn’t mean “perfect in every single way” it means “I love it!” and I certainly do love this thing. It’s super useful and feature-rich, all in a device that can fit in my pocket.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI am writing this review a bit early to be honest. I have only tried the H2n briefly and certainly haven’t ‘put it through its paces’ as yet. I must say though, it’s an impressive piece of kit. The few test recordings I made sounded beautifully crisp and clear, with a good display screen to keep you informed.

If I am being critical I guess that I find the multi-function main switch a little ‘vague’ but actually I was aware of that from reading other reviews — but I certainly don’t think it’s all that bad and I am sure that with regular use the traits of the switch will be forgotten. It does the job very well and so if you read other reviews which mention the ‘soft, vague’ switch then I wouldn’t let that worry you (it’s fine with me… and I am a fussy old geezer!).

The overall build is nice quality and I can see me using the microphone for most of my projects. I do have more expensive and sophisticated mics but they are certainly not as portable or quick to setup as the H2n. I have since invested in the accessory kit as I feel the H2n needs a nice padded case and windshield… and the other items in the accessory kit will come in handy too I reckon. I paid just over 20 for the accessory kit on Amazon and I believe that’s extremely good value. Admittedly the mini-tripod is a bit naff, but it’ll do the job. The value is mainly in the lovely case, decent windshield, cute remote control (with extension lead too!), and even a main adaptor. I must say that the ‘dummy mic handle’ in the accessory kit is a great idea, either for slotting the H2n into a standard microphone holder… or as a ‘hand-grip’ for the odd occasion.

I must find something to have a gripe about though! I was rather miffed to discover that in my H2n box there was a very impressive printed manual(s) which actually consisted of three manuals measuring about 1/2inch thick. Almost every language under the sun in it but no English!!! I was rather amazed. I have since obtained a PDF English Manual online but can’t believe that all the documentation that came with the H2n did not include English. A lot of gadgets these days you can fathom out without a manual, but the H2n is quite a complicated device with many options and settings. I pity anyone buying this who hasn’t got internet access etc.

Anyway, there’s the good (and the bad) about the H2n. As I mentioned, this is a very early review so I can’t say I have tested the H2n much yet. Time will tell whether it continues to impress me — if I discover anything worthy of note I may add to this review at a later date.

So far though, the H2n seems to be a little belter!!!!

It’s a great recorder but mine came with no SD card, there was a sticker on the box telling me but the Amazon description said there was one so I didn’t order a card to come with it. Also it had user manuals in French, Italian and Spanish but not in English. I can access the manual online but it’s annoying.

    Check what’s in the box

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI am using this mainly to get audio samples from outdoor locations to use in D&D campaigns and other various stuff of that nature. It’s great for that, and produces a good clean recording. The User interface I found simple and intuitive for the most part, though I did struggle to work out how to play back audio after the fact – I think there’s a bug whereby you can’t do it with the built in memory. It seemed to work fine when I put a memory card in there.

Of note: I use an iPad and iPhone as my primary computing devices – which I think is only going to get more popular as an option. You can not use this device directly with those devices. While the h2n offers an ability to act as a USB microphone and a card reader, it draws too much power for those iOS devices and they are not compatible because of this. Even with the unit switched on using batteries, iOS still rejects the connection with a warning that it draws too much power. A minor but important niggle. That won’t stop you being able to take the memory card out and using a camera connection kit to get the files across, but that’s less convenient as well as not quite the same functionality.

We use this recorder in church in 4 channel mode. 2 channels recording the audio straight off the microphones via the sound desk and a cable into Line-In. Built in mics simultaneously record the congregational singing in stereo. All in high-quality WAV format which I can then mix to achieve the desired balance. Brilliant, well thought out, powerful, great quality.

    Alles in allen sehr zufrieden.
