Love the look and feel of this controller, and based on its price it’s a lovely alternative to the Switch Pro controller, where in some ways this may actually be a better option. My only complaint is it’s small amount of connecting issues I ran into for my Switch, but they’ve partially been resolved with firmware updates on 8bitdo’s end.
Well, as the title suggests, I am wondering if I should order this controller for the third time to see if I will be lucky. The D-pad on this controller is top notch. First controller had loose buttons that would rattle as if it wasn’t situated properly. When the controller vibrates, it was even more apparent. Second controller came shipped with the right thumb stick misaligned. Instead of sitting straight, it was crooked to the right side. I anticipated it to cause a drift but, it didn’t. It acted as if everything was calibrated correctly. I guess the thumb stick mould(?) was faulty. So, here i am wondering if I should order the controller for the third time. Despite my luck so far, it’s one of the controllers i am constantly yearning due to that fantastic d-pad and multi device support.
I had the SN30Pro+ version of the controller, and it was my go-to over the PS4 ones I always used with Steam. Great feel and responsiveness. I wanted a second since my kids also prefer this over our other controllers, and this time got the Pro 2. I love this every bit as much as the last. The addition of the extra paddle buttons (which I actually prefer) and physical switch to hop between devices, made me love it even more.
Well build game pad, with hints of the past. Maybe slightly off centre based off one game, but that’s only an opinion I found.
Works great after getting a replacement, first one was used and it did not charge. Not sure if Amazon or the seller sent ou
Recomendado
Long battery life. I’ve literally charged it 3 or 4 times since I bought it (September 2, 2021).
It has worked with every game that I wanted to play with controller flawlessly.
Build quality is insane for the money.
+ you can buy a second battery if you wanted to and swap them, so you would technically never run out of battery.
+ buttons are tactile and responsive, which I LOVE. I hate mushy buttons.
Would recommend over any cheap xbox controller.
The controller is very comfortable to hold, even for extended gaming sessions. It’s got some weight to it and definitely does not feel cheap at all. I primarily intend to use it for my Nintendo Switch but I believe I’ll also end up using it on my computer. The buttons and directional pad all feel “clicky” for a lack better word but it’s a positive.
I have yet to map anything to the buttons on the back of the controller but given the right game i’m sure the extra buttons will come in handy.
An easy 5* and recommendation, it’s an excellent alternative to the official Pro Controller and well worth the price.
My other 8bitdo is that tiny zero model which is a fun novelty but this one is a beautiful modern controller that will set of retro nostalgia endorphins in your brain. Aesthetically, the photos gave me SNES vibes but in person, it gave me hard 90’s PlayStation flashbacks. The textures/finish have a great hand feel, and I find it versatile to use on my switch, Chromebook or android phone. Easy to recommend the Pro 2.
This works and can be used on different devices, there is a slider switch on the back to select which type of device. The labels aren’t very descriptive on the selector switch so if you lose the directions you will be playing a guessing game. The labels on the switch should be crystal clea
I absolutely LOVE this thing! Being able to remap buttons however I need is a GOD SEND to a PC gamer who likes the Nintendo layout. Only real complaint is that there’s no software on Linux/SteamDeck so I have to use my phone to remap or adjust settings.
Overall good product. A few things I hope to get better:
1) the position of select key. Maybe I get used to PS controller too much. I felt the select bottom is closer to the left stick. When I pushed the select bottom, I often accidentally moved the left stick.
2) response time. When I used it to play PS Now on a low end PC, it was clean to see the lagging. A 2.4G controller seemed working okay in same setup.
This is probably the best third party controller you can buy for the Switch.
Compatibility:
I tested this on my Switch, on Windows, and on Android (I tested it quickly). Worked great. At one point it stopped syncing with the Switch even though I was in S mode, so I waited a day or two and then had to resync it. That was concerning. I’m guessing it had an issue with thinking it was still synced to Android since I tested that right before in D mode. I tested Windows in S mode, which worked, and then in X mode, which is the correct mode and it recognized it and worked as well as an Xbox controller.
Material:
The quality of materials is medium-high I’d say, but it’s too slippery, leading to discomfort. It’s not as high quality as the Switch Pro Controller and it doesn’t grip as well.
Shape:
It has a good shape but, like with the PS5 controller, I realized I am not a fan of the position of the left stick. I know many are. It does help with the D-Pad though, which feels pretty good and is nice and clicky. The shape has a bit of a bulge on the sides, just like the PS5 controller and that doesn’t have help with comfort, sadly. Needs to be a bit thinner.
The biggest issue is that the controller is somewhat slanted forward/downward away from you rather than upwards and towards you (like the Wii Classic Controller Pro, which has a similar shape, is towards you, and the sticks are more separate leading to more comfort and is actually usable for hours of gaming).
The 8BitDo Pro 2 causes your wrists and hands to not rest too comfortably and to be tilted. After 15 minutes or so, it starts to strain.
The shape, from the back where your fingers rest, curves a bit too much compared to the Pro Controller (where they rent in a more straight manner). That doesn’t help with long term comfort.
Sticks:
The sticks themselves are great but not very grippy (material is slippery but soft to the touch). Clicking the sticks works well and aren’t too loud (slightly quieter than the Pro Controller).
Triggers:
Triggers are okay but they need deeper curves so that our fingers rest there and moves them better, and the material used could be better and more grippy, but that’s okay as they work well. Not as good as the PS5 and Xbox controllers’ triggers. They work fine on Windows in Forza Horizon 4.
Buttons:
Buttons are clicky, a bit loud, but not as loud as the Xbox One controller, yet they feel great.
Start/Select buttons have a lot of grip and the material gathers dust/lint but they’re soft and click immediately. They should have been more separate in order to reach them easier (too far as is – not a huge deal though but you do end up touching the sticks and many controllers have that issue).
D-Pad is great as mentioned above but if you want to press all buttons quickly by “rotating” your thumb, as some games require that, it gets noisy and feels.. hmm.. interesting, not sure if that’s good or bad or if it would eventually break or come out of its place, in a way.
Extra buttons:
Home and Screenshot/Record buttons are fine, good location (wish the Pro Controller had them separate like that). They could have them pop out a bit more for easier pressing. They’re fine though.
Vibration:
I really like the vibration on this, feels very high quality and doesn’t do a lot of noise. It’s even nicer than the PS5 controller’s vibration. Similar to the Xbox One controller.
Motion controls / Gyro:
Motion controls work great on the Switch. Someone mentioned that they were worse but I did not notice that at all. They worked as well as the Pro Controller’s.
Conclusion:
Overall, they need to improve the shape a bit as mentioned above, make it more grippy, separate the sticks a bit for easier reach, reduce the price by 20 CAD without compromising on quality, and it’ll be an amazing controller. It is still quite great for now and is definitely worth it (not at full price). If they want to keep it at the same price then the materials used have to improve.
The PS5 controller is superior with quieter buttons and sticks, grips better, but doesn’t work well on Windows and the Switch (unless you use the USB adapter but even then, I got issues with it and had to return both the USB and PS5 controller). Shapes are similar and this one might be a bit thinner, which is better. This one works well everywhere it is advertised to work well.
I was a little iffy but after playing a couple rounds of Smash Bros it was totally worth it! Only reason it is 4 stars because I bought it used and was a little dirty. 🙂
Great build quality, use on multiple systems/set ups, great for emulation and android and also pc gaming
Poterlo poi configurare… top product per me
That’s an amazing product. After tested different joystick I could say that this is the best considering that I used it with MAC
Layout feels like a classic dual shock ps1 controller. Very light and responsive. Been using this for android and retro gaming.
I bought the Pro 2 because I was getting sick of my Dualshock 4. I use it on my PC mainly to play Monster Hunter so the back paddles on the Pro 2 caught my attention, having heard only good things about it I excitedly ordered it, I get it in the mail and I plug it in and launch Rise. First problem, the control sticks seem to calibrate everytime I alt+tab out of the game. Fine, I’ll just avoid alt+tabbing while playing, but then I realize how annoying this was gonna get if say I’m in a Discord call with my friends and they want me to look at something.
Otherwise this controller is pretty fantastic, it’s clearly built well and its super comfortable in the hands, plus it has robust software which has helped me with my experience. I would buy this but be sure you’re OK with the mentioned issue beforehand.
UPDATE: Out of curiosity, I picked up the Wired Xbox version of this controller and it doesn’t have the same issue, I would suggest getting that one if you intend on playing on PC solely with it and don’t mind using up a USB port.
I bought it to play Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch. The “PlayStation” layout of the left stick makes precise actions very difficult with that game. The stick layout vs. the “Xbox” controller layout should be the standard for controllers. It’s more comfortable and allows more range of movement.
But the customization and macros are really fun and easy to setup, and in general, I really like the controller. Just the stick layout doesn’t work for me.
Been using it for a month now, I noticed that if you connect it to the 8bitdo app on the phone then your switch can tell you the battery percentage. Still don’t understand how to use the turbo and hold function. The down side for this controller is no gyro support so when I play botw and need gyro for puzzles I have to switch controllers. The other down side is not being to wake up your switch using the controller. Great response time, however will be interrupted by microwaves I.e latency & unresponsive.
The +/- buttons are located weirdly but it’s not a big issue.
The controller remembers your previously connected device, will try connecting to that first.
Great Controller. Works great with my Samsung S7+ and Android TV. Seems well built. A solid bit of ki
This gets used on the Switch, Android phones/tablets and the PC. It is used wireless or wired and works really well. Got a very nice feel, shoulder controls are a little close together for my broad hands but manageable. The sticks are really good to use. I prefer these to those on the Switch because ALL the controls on that are a bit too small for me. I’ve not yet found any purpose to the 2 buttons on the underside, nothing we’ve played has had the ability to set them up.
Sometimes the PC doesn’t pick it up as a wireless device so I plug it in and it’s OK then but with the Switch it’s perfect every time.
The connection selector is on the bottom and it resists movement so you can’t accidentally stop it connecting to your current device if you know what I mean.
Real shame it won’t work on the Xbox but because this is so good we will probably buy the Xbox version too.
I wanted a controller that was decent quality, without needing to spend in the ballpark of 100 for an official console controller.
I’ve only had the controller a month so I can’t speak to how well it keeps working after several months; which seems to be the main point in reviews of cheaper controllers. But it feels very well made so I have good confidence.
I was worried – due to the SNES inspiration – that this controller would be too small to be ergonomic. But the size is perfect, a little bigger than I was worried it would be, and there was just a little initial finger ache to get used to holding it.
It works out of the box (except for needing to flick the mode switch on the back to X for XBox) but installing the configuration software is worth it to set up the auto-fire and macro functions.
One comment for using this as an XBox controller – the button letters are for Switch (i.e. bottom button is B, not A). This means you need to know the XBox buttons *without looking* to follow on-screen hints from games.
8Bitdo game pads are probably the best you can get if you like symmetric analogue sticks.
This is the third pad I have from 8Bitdo (none of the previous ones broke I just use the sn30 pro for travel and gave the pro+ to my grandma) I use it for PC and for switch and it works better than some more expensive game pads I had before like the xbox elite or razer wolverine (elite had drift and razers analogue stick cap straight out broke without even dropping it).
This pad pretty much works out of the box with everything except PlayStation consoles so if you are looking for a good alternative you won’t go wrong here.
This controller feels really high-quality, connect perfectly and generally does exactly what you expect — and very well!
Thought I’d bricked it when updating the firmware when I first got it. They sent me an email detailing how to fix it and it worked like a charm.
I do prefer the quality & materials of my 1st party Nintendo Switch Pro controller (I bought this one as a player 2 controller for my nieces and nephews), but it’s great for what it is, and of course has great features that the 1st party controller lacks. Happy with my purchase.
The quality of this controller is almost on par with the PS4 Dualshock 4. Similar weight and feel, but around 10-15 cheaper.
Unfortunately my 8Bitdo Pro 2 controller already has an issue with the left thumbstick feeling like it’s grinding. Initially I was impressed with the build quality, but not so sure now as I’ve only been using it for less than 3 weeks.
I’m not rough when using it nor has it been dropped or anything. I rated it 4 stars, but if the thumbstick deteriorates further or the same happens to the right thumbstick then I’d have to drop to a 2 star rating because at that point the controller would be almost not fit for purpose.
My previous controller doesn’t have any issue with the thumbsticks, but I did start to notice the “A” button becoming slightly stiff/sticking which is why I chose to replace it with the 8Bitdo Pro 2 controller. I’ve owned that previous controller for a couple of years at least and it is used daily so some wear is to be expected.
Overall comparing the quality between the two controllers the 8Bitdo Pro 2 loses easily so at this moment I’m unsure if I would recommend based on my own experience.
This is my previous controller:

This is a controller that is primarily interesting to those who loved the SNES controllers. However, this latest iteration removed some of that nostaliga factor by opting for buttons that are pretty standard for modern controllers, thereby sacrificing some of what made it very appealing in the first place. These face buttons no longer look and feel like SNES. The overall color of the controller is also darker, which further strays from its SNES roots. Aside from this, it is a great controller. I just wish they wouldn’t change things that literally nobody complained about while “refining” the controller. Overall, it’s an upgrade. But if you want something as close as possible to the SNES look and feel while also having modern analog sticks and triggers, get the first gen.
I bought this for my brother as a gift. I did get to hold it but I didn’t get a chance to use it, so my review is based on that. This controller feels amazing in the hands. It has a very nice grippy texture on the back shell that is a huge upgrade from the 8BitDo SN30+ controller. I like the feel and the location of the back buttons. I also love that this controller has a mode switch, so you don’t have to do a button command to switch console modes. That makes it way easier to use with multiple platforms. I also really like the color of this controller. As far as battery life goes, I’m not sure how long the life is on the battery because I never used it. I do know that you can pop out the battery that it has and use 2 AA batteries though.
I got this controller on Thursday, and enjoyed thru weekend.
It’s amazingly sensitive, no delay at all.
It’s even more responsible than my WIRED SEGA CONTROLLER.
The feeling of buttons are also absolutely gorgeous.
I am arcade game lover, and this gaming controller worked really well for old fighting game like street fighter 2, shooting game like strikers 1945 series, or tekken series, ninja baseball batman… etc
I am super happy with this controller
8BitDo did a really good job again.
Arrepentido.
This is one of the best controllers I’ve ever had. It is very comfortable in the hand, has a nice weight, and it’s very solid. There may be some minor issued with botton programming for some Steam games, but nothing to worry about with a bit of resarch online. This one is a solid 10/10, recommended for everyone who enjoys playing on PC/Linux.
By far my favourite controller I’ve owned the build quality is fantastic, it connects in seconds and has no noticeable latency over Bluetooth at all.
I had a small issue connecting to the button mapping app. I used my own cable instead of the one supplied in the box and my PC wouldn’t recognise the controller as being connected. I swapped the cable over and it connected straight away. No fault of the controller at all, just my own laziness.
I’ve played a few games on my phone and on my PC and can honestly say that it feels better than my Xbox One controller.
I haven’t done anything with the macro buttons on the rear, but I can see them being very handy for combos.
Long story short, I really like it and recommend you picking one up if you need a new controller.
I made the mistake of attempting to update the firmware with the 8Bitdo Ultimate Software app on my Android phone when I opened up the box for this gadget. It failed partway through rendering the controller useless, a common issue as I’ve found. Fortunately though, I did not have to request a replacement as you can fix it easily by connecting it to a computer using the USB-C wire and using the Update Tool available on their website to restore the firmware. Since then I’ve gotten a good amount of enjoyment out of the controller with my Android. The battery life, compatibility, and ergonomics are all splendid, the only downside I’ve ran into thus far being that most games just don’t recognize the back buttons at all. Fair play, 8Bitdo.
This is the best third party controller I have ever bought and I’ve been gaming for 30+ years and owned practically every console that’s come out at some point. It feels just like a snes controller with added dual sticks and playstation grips, and unlike most third party controllers this one has rumble so you won’t be missing out. Will definitely be purchasing another one if I need a 4th controller for the switch.
I needed a controller that would easily connect to my Amazon Fire TV so I could play games via the GeForce Now streaming app. Xbox and Playstation controllers did work, however for some reason the ‘Start’ or ‘Options’ buttons would not work as needed. This controller is not only very comfortable to use, but functions 100% as needed for streaming games to my TV, no PC or console required.
Highly recommended.
Had to send the first one back as it would randomly do inputs on the right stick. The replacement works flawlessly with both my pc and switch.
I love the way it feels when holding it compared to a PS4 controller, not as bulky as an Xbox controller. Buttons appear to respond well and the sticks haven’t caused me any issues. Software has been an absolute nightmare.
Getting this to work, wirelessly with their receiver, has been a lesson in patience and was extremely irritating. They pair in seconds, but the buttons don’t match up with the Ultimate software config page when you actually load into a game.
Example: Ultimate software says A -> A. Go into a game (FF14 in this case) and A -> Y.
Other buttons are all mixed up as well. Checking online resources and apparently this is super common. Discover later the receiver has “profiles” that you can switch through that isn’t referenced in the controller’s faq page. Changing this receiver input to Windows corrected the issue, but every time I disconnect? Yup, have to switch the receiver profile again. I’ve yet to find a way to change it’s default behavior, so currently it never works properly with any windows game until I swap the profile input.
(Select -> D-Pad Up / Select -> D-pad Right are the two I’m using, so if anyone reads this and is having issues)
This controller is super high quality and feels very good in my hands. I programmed it via PC quickly to set up the back paddles for certain games. This is my go-to if I’m playing any game I prefer to use a D pad on such as stardew valley which I have logged 170+ hours on (at least 100 of that is using the 8bitdo Pro 2). I also use it for tetris, and many of the NES and SNES online games. It syncs perfectly with my switch and my PC for use with steam and many emulators. If you are looking for a high quality controller for games with a D pad this is the controller for you.
I also use it on games with the joysticks, and those are very good as well. My personal preference is for the left joystick to be positioned like the official nintendo pro controller but if you like the playstation style layout you’ll enjoy this controller as well
I use it for pc and Nintendo games fricken awesome controller super comfortable and convenie
I bought the sn30 pro+ Used at GameStop a while back because it looked like an snes controller. Saw they had a pro 2, and I was all over it. Even better than the previous one. I’m glad I have the option to map the trigger buttons or not because on the Nintendo pro controllers I always accidentally hit them and do the wrong thing at a critical moment in a game. Best d-pad hands down. Stick movement is smooth. No drift issues that I’m aware of. The battery life on this controller is phenomenal I charged it once right when I got it and a few weeks later it still says the battery is full. Although I probably don’t play as much as some people do. But I play enough that I’m shocked it’s still fully charged.
I prefer it over Nintendo pro controllers. It feels more durable and it’s comfortable for long hours of play. I recommend this brand to everyone.
8bitdo has come a long way. This thing along with the custom software and update software make this controller very modular. Thumbstick sensitivity, button mapping, trigger pressure, it’s all here. The fast slider on the bottom makes switching between the Switch and the PC a simple breeze now. The battery is also removable so you can get another one if needed. Pretty good battery life. No complaints.
I found this masterpiece by looking up reviews on bluetooth controllers, i could tell it was perfect for me.
I’ve used it religiously for a week now. No other controller have felt this good and i have tried a lot of different controllers in my years.
My experience with it on pc/switch and mobile is a 10/10 for sure, no input lag when on bluetooth is amazing as a lot of controllers suffer on that point.
The only negative thing i can say about it is the interior packing in the box, it could be made better.
I hope this controller stays in production for many years to come.
If you are looking for a controller for multiple systems, look no further. This absolutely smashes my expectations. Feels nice, has some great features and looks smart. Nothing more you could want from a controller.
Get. This.
The controller has everything you could want from a controller.
It can remap every button, has rear buttons and nice rumble and can connect to your PC, phone and switch and does remember all 3.
The overall quality is good, but personally I think the controller is a little bit to small, maybe if you have small hands it’s ok or if the size doesn’t matter to you. For me with average to big size hands the controller doesn’t fully sit in my hands unlike the switch pro controller or xbox controller.
What really bothers me are the select – and start + buttons. They feel really bad like old ps1 controller buttons. Super mushy and disgusting to press.
The rumble is good but a little bit weaker than on the xbox controller. But the motors can do finer rumble.. it says it can’t do HD rumble but to me it feels somewhat in-between hd rumble and the xbox rumble. It’s not as powerful but more pronounced if that makes sense. Personally I like it.
The D Pad is really good on this one. Even better than on the xbox and switch controller.
However the sticks are a bit weird. If you play games where you need to aim. Like fps they probably will annoy you. I don’t really know why they feel bad but being precise with aiming on this controller is way harder than on other controllers.
Lastly the controller can’t wake up the switch which is a huge deal for me. But since I mainly use this controller for PC it is ok.. But the fact that I can’t wake up my switch with it actually makes me not use it on the switch.
Overall it is a good controller and I value the remappable buttons a lot, which is the main selling point for me. If you can look over bad select and start buttons and don’t play a lot of fps games you will probably have a lot of fun. Maybe in the future there will be a Pro 3 that will iron out those little kinks.
definitely an upgrade to the original. I don’t use the back buttons (yet) but they’re all very easy to customize with the app. The biggest upgrade for me was the switch between profiles rather than memorizing an input.
One thing that has always rubbed me the wrong way about the 8bitdo gamepads in general is how the power light is on top, so most people wont even notice that the battery is low until it’s too late. That and it’s hard to buy the battery only (I know i can use standard rechargeable AAs, but an official one would be ideal).
Good weight, nice responsive buttons, the softwares pretty decent too.
Excellent choice for Switch, PC and Android, works will with GForce Now as well.
Comparing the 8bitdo Pro 2 controller to one of my favorite controllers, the dualshock 4 reveals certain
things I like and don’t like. First off, the face buttons are more raised on the Pro 2, they stick up a bit more and aren’t as low profile. However, the backpaddle buttons really come in handy, as you can substitute mostly any button on the controller with them, so its easy to map L3 or R3 to one of these back buttons, something the dualshock 4 doesn’t have. My only wish would be that they had an option
to bind these buttons to a keyboard press, but i guess patent disputes prevent this. Also, the analog sticks feel a bit stiffer compared to the dualshock 4, which to me is a con, but not a big one. Haven’t tried the gyro, but it only seems functional in switch mode? Overall, I really like the controller, I feel it is a step up, but not the dream controller I wanted it to be. It is affordable and works great and has features not available with other controllers, so would give it a grade of A-
I really, really want to love this controller. It melds the SNES controller face, one of my all-time favorite controllers, with hand grips somewhat similar to my other all-time favorite controller, the original Playstation controller. It looks absolutely fabulous and the hand feel is solid.
What I can’t stand is that the L-stick occasionally continues to read an UP input even when the stick isn’t being touched. It makes precision input impossible, and causes movement in game when there shouldn’t be any. Even jiggling the L-stick around or DOWN doesn’t always work to snap the controller out of it. As long as I’m only playing a silly game it’s just annoying, but I would not play this for a hardcore game where the occasional drift UP can ruin the fun.
Can’t say I’ve had any problems with it so a thumbs up from me.
This is the pinnacle of controllers. Whether for use as a PC, Switch or Android controller, there is simply nothing better.
This has a similar layout to the PlayStation dual shock controller. The buttons can be reprogrammed via an app, and they work well. It cannot be used to wake Nintendo Switch. It must be manually connected via the Controller page on the Switch. Then it takes a few seconds to connect wirelessly to the Switch after pressing the Start button.
Great build quality. Input was very responsive and battery life is incredible. I used this for the Nintendo switch and was a worthwhile purchase.
I have purchased a few controllers from 8BitDo and this is an awesome continuation of their Pro controller line. I own the Pro 1 and it was a great controller, and this one give you the rear buttons as well as much easier connectivity between different systems with the new slider they added. If you’re looking for a controller that has a great build quality, rechargeable battery that can be removed if anything goes wrong with it, and awesome software you can download to customize the buttons, this is a great choice.
One note I would say before buying this controller tho: It is definitely a controller for people with larger hands. My hands are in the medium to large range, so I enjoy the size. But if you have relatively small hands I would consider going with a smaller controller.
Sums it up. The buttons on the back are reprogrammable, the dpad is very high quality, the abxy feel smooth and the controller is grippy to the touch. Sweat resistant in a sense too.
Turbo works well, has a very long battery life, works on literally anything.
8bitdo have done it again 🙂
It’s amazing! Use it for Steam and Emulators and works a charm. Feels nice and weighty and deluxe. Highly recommended!
All the buttons feel great, and the joysticks are notably like the ps4 controller’s. Unfortunately they’re a bit far into the controller and my thumb tends to slip to the edges. The dpad is great and rolls easily. It’s simple to connect the controller to multiple devices using the switch on the back and the sync button. The gyro works well when you can take advantage of it. I feel that the placement of the sticks and the shape/placement of the shoulder buttons could use adjustments. The shoulder buttons are thin and you have to reach pretty far up to get to them. My hands are medium for reference. It’s possible that the grips might need a different shape altogether because of the way they angle the hands.
I’ve had this controller for almost a month now and I’m absolutely in love with it. The controller feels natural in your hands with a textured grip to make it easier to grip. The D-pad on this controller is excellent and perfect for those games where using analog sticks feels awkward. The buttons feel very responsive and clicky. The placement of the analog sticks works great and the buttons are within reach with the exception of the “Start” and “Select” buttons. I don’t have small hands but I do need to over extend my thumb just a little to be able to reach them.
The shoulder buttons feel very similar to the PS4 ones and I have had no issues with them so far. Now for the software, I love how much you can customize this controller along with the added buttons on the back. It’s very easy to reassign any button or create your own macro. The software is very easy to use and the controller saves 3 profiles. You can create macros and the controller also has a turbo button that you can assign to any button you choose. It’s very easy to switch to the supported platforms and no noticeable lag or input issues.
I really love this controller and I have been using it mainly for PC and Switch and I don’t intend to use another controller as this one just feels great. It would be great to be able to use this on my PS4 and better placement of the middle buttons, but that’s just me being nitpicky. The battery life is great and if you’re looking for a controller that had a ton of features, great quality, then this is it.
If you have used one of 8bitdo’s controllers in the past I can easily tell you that they have improved the controller in all areas, the pro 2 feels and functions extremely well, the added feature of a physical switch to change connection type is most welcome, no more holding down buttons to swap between direct input and x input modes!
Works like a champ on a raspberry pi, connects perfectly to android, flawless with my time with it so far. The software app to change dead zones and button layouts is the cherry on top.
It still has everything that was good about the old version. It’s comfortable to hold, you can use it wired or wireless, the analog sticks and triggers are very precise, the d-pad is accurate and feels good, and it’s got a very respectable (>20 hour) battery life with a rechargeable, replaceable battery pack.
The most useful feature the Pro 2 adds for me is the ability to program multiple profiles into the game pad. If you play PC ports of console games or if you play games from other regions, you’re probably used to games swapping which buttons are used to confirm/cancel, and so I like having profiles I can use to switch the positions of the X/Y and A/B buttons so they always match what I expect.
The Pro 2 also adds two paddle buttons underneath the control, which would be useful… if I could do anything with them. Much like the “Star” button on the original Pro+, which is still here, this button can only be configured in 8BitDo’s software to copy another button on the controller or to enable/disable turbo mode, or to execute macros that replicate pushing several other buttons in sequence. Copying buttons isn’t useful for me, and macros would be useful if I played fighting games and wanted to cheese command sequences, but… I don’t. Pushing one of them to execute a macro also interrupts and cancels any other button you were pushing on the controller, so you can’t use them while you’re moving with the sticks, for example.
I would love to be able to map the star button and paddles to arbitrary key presses; let me use them to take a screenshot, record a video, or display a custom overlay. All of those would be great, but they’re not possible right now. They don’t even show up as buttons in the operating system’s control panel, so nothing else can use them even if you wanted to use other joystick mapping software.
My disappointment with that aside, this is still my favorite PC game pad.
This is a really fantastic all-purpose controller, and an insane value for the money. If you’re trying to chose between this model and the SN30 Pro+, go with this one. The extra features are well worth the extra $5.
My only complaints about it are that it’s a bit on the small size for my stupidly oversized hands (about the size of a PS4 controller) and that the d-pad membrane is a bit stiff right out of the box. But a bit of stiffness is to be expected for a brand new membrane and will probably break in over time. And since the d-pad uses the same style of membrane as an SNES controller, you can easily swap it out if it’s really an issue. And even though I prefer my membranes a bit softer, this is still an absolutely fantastic d-pad for games like Celeste that require accuracy and reliability.
So yeah, aside from those very minor and subjective issues, this thing is absolutely solid. <3
If you dropped money for the SN30 pro+, open up your wallet again for this beauty because I honestly feel like this is the best 3rd party controller on the market, and this may even be my favorite overall controller ever made. The buttons feel really good, the build quality is excellent, no controller creak when you are being a bit rough. The obtuse button combination you had to hold to activate different modes for the controller have been replaced by a simple switch on the back. The middle buttons were centered!
The only downside for this controller I have right now, is the wireless dongle from 8bitdo currently does not support the Pro 2 in xinput mode, and they have already said that there is a new firmware coming out to fix that.
If you are looking for a controller, this one is hard to pass up.
I’m very impressed by both the quality and the value pricewise. I can use this controller for almost anything on the market and it has a replaceable battery (how novel!) so I know it’s not engineered for obsolescence.
Controler feels really good, a problem i had with the previous model was that the D-pad seemed to “float” within its recess leading to some input inaccuracy in fighting games. This controller addresses that issue and also makes it a lot easier to switch the controller to different devices. the switch at the back instead of button combinations is more intuitive and prevents accidental mode changes. The programmable buttons at the back help with first person shooters and the price i Paid for this pad (approx 35) was awesome value as microsoft and sony charge a lot more for these luxuries. programmable buttons and macros help a lot with shooters etc. overall a great pad that addresses a lot of the issues of teh previous models. I have happily reccomended this pad to friends and people who use it generally want one themselves once they have tried it.
his controller is just what i wanted it feels nice in my hands almost like a ps4 contorller and it has the same hight low positioned joy sticks. youll need a computer to make macros and customize the profiles. which is amazing you can set the paddles to be anything any single button or direction input or any combination of buttons. the switch to change the platform you connect to is super convenient too. you dont have to remember weird button combos to boot the controller for certaint devices. ive use this controller on pc and Nintendo switch i only wish i could use it on PlayStation as well. im also not really a fan of the squishy old NES start and select buttons but its a small complaint that doesnt really effect gameplay. the controller feels nicely built and solid the buttons are all nice too aside from the ones i just mentioned. this may be my new favorite controller. tho idk if you have big hands maybe you wont like it.
A really solid and robust controller, love the feel of the buttons and triggers. Top quality!
Fantastic controller. Very comfortable to use. Additional back buttons nice! Can use them for macros/remap a different button to them! So is the ability to store 3 controller profiles on each input switch! Use it mostly for my PC games but can easily change it to Switch Mode and play games on the Switch with it! Highly recommended
As a side note, I have not noticed any increased latency when using over bluetooth on my PC when compared the official xbox wifi adapter.
This is my 3rd 8bitdo controller and, once again, they’ve delivered. The design is is a nice pairing between the original SNES layout and the more modern grip of a PlayStation controller, making it pretty versatile. The d-pad feels good enough with side scrolling games like SoR4 or Scott pilgrim vs the world to not even consider using the joy sticks. Speaking of, the precision of the joysticks seems to be on par with modern controllers. FPS game can benefit the most from this, obviously, as it gives better control over the joy-cons. There’s a few drawback since it doesn’t have all the features on the standard Switch Pro controller, like amiibo support for instance, but you can adjust nearly everything about the controller from vibration intensity to button macros with a fully packed app you can install on your phone. There’s even a button on the controller to switch between your saved profiles, so if you have a certain macro or button mapping, you’re a tap away from selecting your custom layouts. Overall it’s a great controller and I’d go as far as saying it’s a solid replacement for the Switch Pro.
It’ll be of no surprise that I’ve always held the older SN30 PRO + as one of the best controllers I’ve ever used for nintendo Switch. 8Bitdo have gone and made it even better with this iteration!
It has the same weight and feel of the older SN30 PRO + (Kinda similar to a PS2 pad) and the buttons are proper responsive. I love the dpad on this one too, very accurate which makes it better for fighting games and 2d platformers.
My only issue with the older model is that the analogue rubber started to wear-away after 4 months… I’ll be back to update the review and let you know if that is the case on this one.
There’s so many other features that are available for it too – it’s got its own app for remapping the buttons and basically customising the the controller any way you would like. I like the new addition of the 2 rear buttons which you can map to any of the front facing buttons.
The switch at the back which also makes it very easy to switch between PC, Switch, Android and MAC is brilliant too. It’s really the all in One controller for every occasion.
8bitdo is one of my favorite gaming accessory brands and I’ve used the SN30 Pro+ for quite a while and love it. When this became available for preorder as well as its accessories I made the preorder without a second thought.
For anyone who has used the SN30 Pro+, this is the same in every respect with the nice quality of life additions. The mode selector switch on the bottom is easily one of its best features. The profile selection is another favorite of mine. I was also very surprised at how is the mobile app was to use by comparison to having to connect it over the USB cable to my laptop. All you have to do is start the app, touch the icon for the controller and you’re connected and ready to customize. No wonky pairing, account creation, or any of the other steps required in other similar products.
If you’ve never used one of 8bitdo’s products then I can’t recommend their products highly enough. If you’re looking for a full-featured multi-platform controller, this is the one, you need to look no further. If you are trying to decide between this model or one of the models below it, if you can swing the extra funds or don’t mind waiting until you have them, I’d definitely recommend this one for versatility and longevity.
1. Das groe D-Pad als “Haupt” steuerung.
Unfortunately, I’m not impressed with 8bitdo’s support. It seems the entirety of Europe had stock issues and 8bitdo stuck their head in the sand, refusing to communicate with their customers, rather than be transparent with customers regarding the stock issues.
Hopefully there will not be any further issues with stock.
I was a huge fan of the ‘Pro +’ and other 8bit do controllers, and I wasn’t too sure about spending another $50, for something that looked to be a minor update….boy was I wrong!
Just like the ‘PRO +’ it comes packed with advanced features that blow the official pro controller out of the water!
*Full Button remapping. (official pro controller remapping is limited)
*Swap D-pad and Left Joystick
*Adjustable Analogue Triggers
*Profile toggle
*Adjustable rumble/gyro
*Analogue stick sensitivity/dead zone adjustment
But the Pro 2 comes loaded with quality of life changes.
The Pro+ had some great features, but they had some slight draw backs…
1.The Pro+ had full button revamping…. but no extra buttons for easy access/macros.
2.The Pro+ let you set up multiple profiles in the pc app…but you could only store one on the controller at a time.
3.The Pro+ supported multiple devices (PC/android/mac os/switch), but to switch devices, you needed to restart the controller and remember a specific button combo.
4.The Pro+ had fairly dim player indicator lights.
And the PRO 2, fixed all these issues!
*You have dedicated paddles on the back that can be set to any button/macro!
*The controller can store up to 3 profiles, and you can switch at any time with just one button
*There’s now a dedicated switch so you can manually set the device you’re connecting to (pc/android/switch/mac)
Sure there are still things that could be improved, Wireless switch waking for one,
but overall it’s a fantastic controller for the price.
For a more detailed look, you can check out my youtube review, just search for: “8bitDo Pro 2 Review – At The Edge of Perfection!”
UPDATE: Bumping up my score from a 4 to a 5 because the latest firmware update (v1.01) has fixed the analogue stick issue I was talking about. Now I consider this one of the best 3rd party controllers out there and would highly recommend it to anyone.
This would have been my go-to controller if it wasn’t for one thing: the input on the analogue sticks will snap to a perfect direction if you’re holding the stick slightly off from that direction.
For example: say you’re holding the stick a few degrees above what would be considered true right. The stick’s input would automatically adjust to act as though you’re properly holding right. To me this takes away the amount of control I have in my movement. I don’t know if this is how it was designed or if my controller’s faulty, but other than that I think this is a fantastic controller.
In comparison with the previous version (SN30+), I immediately felt the difference in the face button (X,A,B,Y) quality. No longer does it feel like cheap, loose buttons like its older brother controller, but honestly feels like the quality of a modern console, including L3/R3. The addition of customizable paddles is very much welcome and they function great, they’re just as responsive as all the other buttons. I haven’t tested it on a Rasp. Pi since I don’t have one, but they pair up great with everything else. Not to mention the software from their website to customize the controller is still as easy as ever to use. It paired with my Android products just fine like my PC and Switch. I love the quality upgrade and it’s worth the money, especially since its the same price as the SN30+ when those first launched. I can’t wait to see where 8BitDo goes with these! 🙂
The build quality is awesome and is comfortable to use. The D Pad is perfect – like I haven’t felt better. The only trade-off, which is unavoidable, would be the layout of the dpad and joystick. This makes the Dpad the star of the show, but the grips make the left joystick comfortable to use as well.
Setting vibration levels, trigger sensitivity and mapping the back buttons are all great extras. I personally have use for a “hold” and “turbo” button depending on the game so those will certainly be a default.
I haven’t owned their other controllers, opting to preorder this one, but they really succeeded with the best controller for Switch especially but it’ll be my main on PC as well.
BUT. It’s also true that on the Switch – at least on my Switch – the sticks are a little too sensitive. It’s NOT drift, to be clear. But when returning back to center, I was pretty frequently getting a little bit of input in the opposite or adjacent direction to the previous input. Which is extremely frustrating when you’re playing a game.
The good news is, they have excellent customization software you can download and use to tweak the deadzone on the sticks, the responsiveness of the triggers and rumble, the button layout – pretty much whatever you want. And assuming you can load that up on PC, Android or iOS and get the profile applied to your controller, you can absolutely fix that issue, and after doing that it’s working great and I love it. It’s arguably a bonus, because however your specific system responds to this controller, you can tweak around it.
But it does mean that if they ever take that download down, or for someone who can’t run that software, there’s a pretty significant buyer beware on this controller that I never had a problem with on the Pro+. So just know about it, and if running the software won’t be an issue for you, I think you’ll love this pad.
I got really excited by the announcement of back buttons coming to 8bit controllers.
Sadly though there is no on the remote self programming for said buttons. You have to use the app for whenever you want to change them for one of the profiles.
For every time you do this you have to pair and unpair multiple times while praying the app detects the controller.
*Unpair from Switch
*Pair to phone
*Wait till app finds the controller
*Reprogram button inputs
*Hope the app automatically pairs you back
(*Manually change modes and pair to Switch again)
This makes me wish they implemented a button on the back to program the back buttons like other brands do. Having to do that process for anything is annoying as the controller will somtimes power off in-between pairing. So you have change pairing modes and turn the controller back on.
The customizability is nice but official controllers let you change the inputs in the Switch itself. Some features of this controller are disabled for Switch due to incompatibility issues like triggers.
Additionally even though the controller can connect to android devices it is considered it’s own controller so expect limited support on games. This makes me wish it emulated as a Play Station or Xbox controller. So it could be compatible with those consoles and allowfor an even greater amount of controller support.
If you’re looking for a simple plug and play look for something else. If you’re willing to work and tinker to get this to work on any game. I’d say buy it as it’s a steal at $50. It just isn’t personally for me.
