What an absolutely amazing controller, bought it mainly to play mario maker 2 on the Nintendo switch, as an old skool gamer I’m used to having a good “D Pad” which the switch (or other switch controllers including their own “pro” controller) just doesn’t have. When I got this out of the well presented box, I was absolutely amazed at the build quality for a 3rd party controller, it feels nice in the hand, has (imo) a nice finish and feels very sturdy.
Connecting the controller to the switch was a breeze, and the amount of deaths caused by incorrect inputs in mm2 have dropped drastically. My only grumble is that the controller can’t be used to turn on the switch, but the pros more than make up for the cons, I think any other controller I would have dropped it a star because you can’t power on the console, but that’s just how much it impressed me in all other aspects.

If your thinking of buying one, stop thinking and buy it!

    Viel Spa beim zocken!

What did you like or dislike? what did you use this product for?

I ordered this product mainly as I had heard other people recommended it as an alternative to the pro controller.
Initially, it used to be sold at around 50 each, but now it’s currently selling for around 35 so it’s much cheaper than the current pro controller price.

The design I choose is all black, admittedly I would have chosen a faithful SNES design with the coloured buttons but sadly it only had the purple versions.

The handles or grips provide a very comfortable way of holding the controller for people with larger hands.
If you’ve tried the old SNES controllers or even 8Bitdo’s previous versions of these controllers without the grips you would know that after a while your hands might start to cramp up with little room to properly hold the controller.

The rechargable battery is nice, so you don’t need to worry about running out of AA or AAA batteries like other wireless controllers.

Also to dispell some rumours, this controller DOES have rumble features. I haven’t tested any amiboo functionality but I don’t think it is there.

If I had to give any downsides is that the controller buttons can sound a bit “rattely”. A very minor thing that isn’t even worth taking a star off.
The DPAD is decent but could be better compared to other controllers.

Final verdict or thoughts: If you’re considering an official pro controller but don’t need the amiibo support and/or prefer the dual analog stick layout of PS4 controllers over Xbox controllers then consider getting this controller instead and save yourself around 15.

The fact it’s reprogrammable/customisable will likely make it a good choice to use on PC emulators as well.

I like to use the most authentic controllers when using emulators, so bought this one for PlayStation games. What I wasn’t prepared for at all was it feeling better than an original PS controller!

It looks so so good with the all black scheme. It looks really classy as well as feeling solid and perfect in the hand. I have big hands and this sits just right.

Button response feels great and there is no lag that I can tell. Rumble function feels good too. Very similar to a PS4 controller.

Perfect for Playstation games but I have used it with lots of different emulators and even android games. It just works every time and the battery lasts much longer than expected. Very happy purchase!

I live this. Having come from a DS4 that was not wanting to connect to my PC this was amazing. Felt as good quality as the DS4 connects not issues and is responsive and comfortable. Looks well cool in black to. Battery lasts an age. Real classy and great.
    Highly recommended!!

Ever tried a third party controller where the buttons were a bit mushy or the analogue sticks were too loose or just ‘didn’t feel right’? Well this isn’t one of them!

This controller feels premium and well made – there’s no flex to the body. Don’t let the face of the controller fool you – with the grips added to this design it feels nothing like a SNES pad. It’s got similar dimensions (and layout) to a DualShock 4 but feels a tad more angular on the grips.

The analogue sticks feel on par with the the DS4 and Xbox One controller – accurate and with a smooth range of motion. There’s no issue of missing an axis when pressing lightly on a diagonal like in some cheap controllers. The sticks themselves feel like the DS4 bit more like the Xbox in terms of looseness. The D-pad is accurate (no unwanted diagonals) and has a shallow travel. Face buttons are…buttons; fine and feel solid enough. Analogue triggers are very accurate but there isn’t a lot of resistance on the springs.

I’ve tested each of the ‘modes’ that the controller supports. X-input on Windows 10 for Steam games, D-input on my Fire 7 Android tablet for messing with Retroarch (X-input works just as well), connected to my Switch Lite (makes Dark Souls Remastered smoother experience). I’ve even connected it in it’s ‘Mac mode’ on my ancient MacBook Air – because we all game on Macs(!) – it works well with Tomb Raider (it shows up as a DualShock 4). It works wired on PC too if you need that. I’m using it primarily on my PC, connected to a 4 bluetooth adaptor that is connected to a hub and there is no noticable lag. Oh, when pairing enter the code ‘0000’ if it asks you (don’t think the instruction leaflet mentioned that but it’s kind of a standard).

I fully recommend this controller if you need multiple device support.

This is a solid and comfortable controller

    Pros:
-Well built and responsive, comfortable D-pad
-USB C connector for wired connection or charging.
-Removable battery pack, but can also use 2xAA batteries in a pinch
-Can be paired with multiple devices without needing to re-pair using different controller modes.

    Cons:
-Cannot remotely turn on Switch when using Bluetooth (this is an issues with almost all 3rd party wireless controllers on Switch
-Prefer the older 8bitdo retro SNES/NES color schemes.

This was a highly recommended controller for platformers. My main issue with it is the d pad is just very “shallow,” like it’s hard to feel the button get pressed. I find my left thumb cramping up a lot. My other issue is it is by far the hardest controller to sync / pair with the Switch. All my other ones pair almost instantly, but this one can take two or three attempts before pairing. However I love the design and everything else about it is great – responsive and no input lag.

Been looking for a more traditional shaped gamepad to use with my phone and my computer – so here it is. I had already purchased a smaller pad from 8BitDo, but sometimes I just want a regular gamepad to use.

Overall, this is one great product. Battery life is pretty good, the materials quality is impressive and the responsiveness of the buttons satisfying. Configuring the pad and switching to different configurations (which you can also read on the back of the hardware, so convenient) is extremely easy.

Now that I have two pads, I only need someone to invite over for a game. LOL
Jokes aside, this thing is well worth the price and I’m just so satisfied. And if I ever need to set up a gaming party with pads, I know where to look for more.

Like the headline says, the controller simply works, and I love that.

    USABILITY:
As advertised, it can be used with PC, Nintendo Switch and Android (it can be used with other devices too, but these are my main use cases), but there’s more to it; to change from one mode to another it’s extremely easy, just press START + the corresponding button, pair with the desired devide and that’s it; the connection is extremely fast too, and when the controller goes into sleep mode, you just have to press START again and it automagically reconnects, no need to do any kind of manual reconnection.

    BATTERY:
I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now, but I use the controller on a daily basis and it hasn’t run out of battery so far, not even once. You can even use it wired if you want to play and charge the controller at the same time, or just leave it charging overnight; the controller turns itself off once the battery is fully charged. Awesome!

    QUALITY:
The SN30 Pro+ has got a premium feel. From the joysticks to the triggers, it feels as a top tier controller. It’s very comfy too, and all the buttons and the d-pad are very responsive.

    CONS:
To be honest, the only thing i’d complain about, is the fact that in the black version (the one i got) the letters printted on the controller are barely visible. You can see them (sort of) if you look close enough and put the controller against a light source, but otherwise, the controllers looks like it’s all black.

    CONCLUSION:
The SN30 Pro+ is so good, I felt i was doing wrong by not leaving a review (sorry, I’m kinda lazy, dont’ judge me). It’s a high quality product, sold at a reasonable price, and its usability allows it to be the “jack of all trades” of controllers (at least for me). I recommend buying the smartphone adapter sold by 8BitDo if you plan on using it with your phone.

For me, this controller is the best of both worlds, the PS4 controller which is my all-time favorite and the SNES controller. The build quality is good and the triggers feel great. The controller looks sexy. You get additional software. Turbo is a big plus from me to avoid the annoying grind (personally use it in Zelda for rupee farming). Plus you get a 1-year warranty with this so you have a piece of mind which is always welcomed! I also got smash with this so I’m super excited 🙂

Finally found a controller that works with Nvidia Shield (Bluetooth) to replace the broken gamepad. Had initial difficulty pairing but after full charge paired ok, however a few days later had to pair again. Power saving is good but you always have to turn the controller on with start+B. Had a few ‘controller disconnected’ errors during real racing but on the whole is fairly reliable. The controller itself feels good quality and is pretty precise in use.

As far as my controller working, everything is good and it was delivered with no issues. As far as what game/system/application you use it for, it all depends.

I tried it on my iPad pro and so far it only works and registers on Apple Arcade.

I wanted to play it on a site called Retrogames.cc and I was only able to do that on PC (it could be the site itself). You may also have to configure it first before using so make sure to evaluate all the available firmware first. All in all great controller. You just might have to tinker with it first.

This is a really excellent controller. I have it paired to my Nvidia Shield TV (which runs Android) to play games through Nvidia’s Geforce Now service. It paired easily, and functions accurately. What I didn’t expect was that they mimicked the classic SNES controller so exactly that I had a sense of recall from the early 90s that totally took me by surprise. The shape, texture and action of the ABXY buttons, the shoulder buttons, start, select and the directional cross all brought back years of muscle memory from my childhood. I’ve never experienced nostalgia in my fingers before, and now here it is. It’s pretty cool. I’m going to buy more of these as gifts for people I used to play games with back in the day.

Great controller for the switch. Battery pack that was supplied with it died in the first month but I keep rechargable AA batteries around so it wasn’t a big deal to me.

Doesn’t wake the sleeping switch like the pro controller does, but does have turbo functionality which is awesome for resource gathering in animal crossing 🙂

Product is the quality-level I expected from 8bitdo. Finding the right software and getting it to update in order to enable the turbo functionality for switch was also somewhat of a hassle. It’s also a bit unreliable when it comes to getting it to connect to my Switch quickly but once it’s connected, it won’t drop the signal. Build quality is pretty good and the buttons and sticks feel better than most 3rd-party options. I’d still say the official pro controller feels a lot more weighty and better-feeling but they’re also a lot more expensive. The placement of the home and screenshot button is also not ideal. Shipping took forever. I nearly forgot I had ordered it by the time it arrived.

Controller feels and controls great. The multiple modes make it work just fine with Androids, Computers, and the Switch in my experience. It’s very good for old and new games alike, and has become my go to controller. Though from what I’ve seen from others and have experienced first hand, the joysticks can be very prone to drift. I am also slightly disappointed with its incompatibility with PS3 and PS4 consoles.

    Overall, very good controller.

I have been using two of these controllers (this black one plus a grey one) for both a Nintendo Switch and PC for six weeks. I really like them and like symmetrical positioning of the joysticks. They feel good quality and were decent value. I like that it is relatively easy to change from using them on the Nintendo Switch to using them on the PC. I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a gamepad, especially if you would like to use it on more than one platform.

Let’s get straight to business about this controller… I did make a video of me playing games using the controller, but Amazon said it contained ‘promotional content’ and took the video down?!

    Anywaaaaaaaaaaaaay…

    Pros:
    – The plastic materials used feel strong and have good build quality.
    – The controller is simple to set up and comes with easy instructions.
    – the vibration motor feels strong and precise! Almost HD rumble levels.
-there is motion present here 😀 so splatoon is a blast with this.
    – it has analogue trigger buttons! Although the switch does not recognise analogue triggers 🙁
    – all the buttons feel clicky and responsive.
    – USB C charging

    Cons
    – Pairing takes a little while sometimes.
    – it cannot wake the switch from sleep.
    – no NFC

I was honestly expecting for the worst in terms of the road as I had heard a lot of mixed reports on that and it was the most sought after feature for me.

I can safely say this controller has surpassed all my expectations and then some. It feels comfortable on your hand even better then the gaming giants out there like Xbox and Sony are able to make their controllers. Thumb sticks are perfect height and buttons have a nice tactile feel to them. Even better is that they have analog triggers and the software gives you freedom to customize to yoir preference.

I have tried many controllers including the elite series on Xbox. This one far outshines that without a doubt.

How do I start with this controller? This is the first other controller that I ever bought for my Switch. As soon as I opened up the box, I knew that this controller was made by the right hands and right people. This controller is SUPER comfortable for all kinds of games, especially fighting games! The sticks have a perfect deadzone and the turbo mode function? Just phenomenal. Super SUPER convenient to have! I’ve found myself using the turbo mode waaaaaaaaay too many times on games like Animal Crossing and Splatoon 2! And I just discovered recently that you can also set more macros? This controller is BEYOND amazing! Was truly blown away with this masterpiece. Thank you 8Bitdo!

I previously used the N30 Pro2 and kept finding myself wanting grips on the sides of the controller, so I looked into the SN30 Pro+ and overall I’m pretty satisfied. The controller has a good weight, slightly heavier than the official Switch Pro Controller. For most Switch games, I prefer the left stick above the D-Pad, so this controller feels a little weird for normal games. However, my roommate who is a PS4 fan loves the controller layout (although the ABXY buttons are Nintendo layout, with the A button on the right, instead of the bottom). For emulators on my PC and phone, this controller feels amazing. Perfect layout for old NES/SNES/GBC/GBA games. It has multiple pairing modes too, allowing it to pretend to be an XBox One controller for Windows 10, even including analog triggers, as well as a DirectInput controller for Android (only controller I’ve used that shows “BUTTON A” for the A button instead of “BUTTON 1”). It also has an iOS mode that causes it to show up as a DualShock controller. Great for playing games on the iPad with native support. It even remembers separate pairing for each mode, so you can just press X+Start to play on your PC, or Y+Start to play on your Switch, etc.
8BitDo also has an app that can map the controller to touchscreen controls on Android, allowing you to use it for touch-only games like PUBG Mobile or other games. (Although I haven’t tested this, since it’s rumored that PUBG Mobile can detect it as cheating and ban you)
I wouldn’t recommend this over the official Switch Pro Controller for competitive games, due to the left stick position (unless you’re used to PS4 style controllers), but for casual play or even just a Player 2 controller, it’s great for the Switch. For Android, it’s amazing… absolutely recommend it.
There are some minor issues with the controller…. this “Black Edition” is entirely black, even the button labels… making it hard to actually see which button is which. For those that are used to the Nintendo layout, this isn’t an issue, but for someone used to XBox or PS4 controllers, it can be hard to search for the right button when the game is telling you to press Y and you keep pressing X because you can’t see which button is which. The Switch allows you to remap the buttons on the controller, so it might be worth swapping the A<->B and X<->Y layout to feel more like a PS4 controller if that’s what you’re used to.

I bought this controller to use with my Switch as I have found the D-pad of the Pro controller to be less than satisfactory. Don’t get me wrong–I love the Pro controller for sure, but it suffers from a “continuous” dpad which means you’ll be accidentally hitting directions you didn’t intend to hit (e.g., hold down and roll your thumb slightly to the right but still *clearly* just hitting down, and you’ll now end up inputting down-right diagonal). The original Wii U Pro controller did NOT suffer this same defect. If you don’t play fighting games for dpad-intensive games, then you’re probably fine, but for me, I do a lot of Kaizo Mario stuff, so precise dpad inputs are a must-have for me. So, I bought this controller to use basically for Mario Maker 2 (and any other game dependent on precise dpad inputs). The dpad on this thing isn’t perfect either but it is by FAR better than the Pro controller’s. This controller is lightweight, holds a charge for a long time, and also has built-in motion controls. It feels very much like the original SNES controller merged with a PS4 Dualshock controller (both of which are my favorite controllers of all time). The real triggers are great as well! I have yet to tweak the controller with the provided software, but I’ve heard only good things about that. So, while maybe not a perfect controller, it absolutely suits my needs and justifies the reasons I bought it. I feel like any avid gamer should have more than one controller of a different type to adequately suit a variety of gaming needs. Playing shooters or thumbstick-intensive stuff? I’m reaching for my Pro controller. Playing old-school games, Mario stuff, or anything dpad-intensive? I’m def reaching for the 8Bitdo. Added benefit that it works with computers (Windows and Mac).

    Pros:
    Lightweight
    Adjustable rumble
    6-axis motion control
    Better dpad
    Adjustable triggers
    Bluetooth -> Switch/PC/Mac compatible
    Tweakable via software
    Feels great

    Cons:
You can’t wake your Switch up with this. This is stated in the description and really isn’t a surprise, but it’s still a bit of a nuisance to get off your lazy arse to wake the Switch up manually just to then hit the Start button on the controller and be on your merry way.

I really like this controller. My only gripe is when I’m charging it. Afterwords if I want to use it wirelessly on my pc (which requires the purchase of a seperate dingle by the way.) I have to let it set off for about 10 mins. If I don’t the wireless connection gets bugged and doesn’t work.

Other than that it is a great controller. Best d-pad I’ve had in awhile and I love using it on my pc and switch.

I’m usually very hesitant when it comes to purchasing products made by third-party companies, but this product received so much praise from customers and professional reviewers alike that I had to give it a try. (I use PC & Android)
I have to say that I really like the design of this controller- the matte black really matches perfectly with the rest of my PC setup, and it felt SO GOOD to grip a controller after years of playing using the mouse and keyboard. I also still own and enjoyed my SNES console when I was younger.

I think the only thing that I felt a bit uncomfortable with this product is pressing down on the joysticks for games like SLIME RANCHER, which requires you to press down on the joystick while moving it around to run/dash. Clicking/pressing down on the joystick is very stiff, which makes sense since we probably don’t want to click on it accidentally, but along with stiffness, it also made a slight plastic creaking noise? I’m sure it’s durable, but the first time I clicked down on it I felt like I was going to break the controller… or at least the joystick, or an internal component… because I had to press down with so much force! Other than that, I don’t think there is a problem with this controller. I think the D-Pad could have been a tiny bit less stiff (I remember my nintendo D-Pads being much smoother with less jittery movement in game) as well and also if it had a tiny bit less travel on the joysticks (my thumbs were really reaching to get to the other side)!

Where I have a problem with this product, and it’s not this product’s problem I don’t think, is a lot of the games I play are not really optimized for it… which makes playing with keyboard & mouse for PC and touch for Android actually a lot more convenient for me. For example, I could not find a way to stack same items in chests in STARDEW VALLEY with the controller, only swap. In TEMTEM, running up or down a bridge/ramp using the D-Pad (left or right) does not keep your character in the center of the path like it does when you just press left or right arrow on the keyboard. And I’m sure this is also the DEV’s fault for not optimizing their game for controllers, but in FINAL FANTASY III, it doesn’t matter if I use the D-Pad or joystick, my character just constantly stops randomly even if I am still pressing the buttons/stick to walk.

I personally feel more comfortable playing with this controller via usb cable rather than bluetooth. It could be psychological, but it just feels more responsive and smoother to me. I wish I could play it wired on my Android devices, but you need to purchase a separate USB-C to USB-C cable to do that, I think… or like a USB-C to USB-A dongle to connect the cable that comes with the controller to it.
This is one of the best options out there for a PC/ANDROID controller that I could find. I think because it wasn’t a perfect experience for me (game devs issue I believe), I will just stick with keyboard, mouse, & touchscreen controls for now.

Note: I have noticed that sometimes when I connect my controller via bluetooth, it will turn off right away and I have to turn it back on again to start using it. (Weird, minor annoyance)

(also would have been nice to have bluetooth 5.0 considering now it’s 2020)

I bought this as a gift for an Animal Crossing New Horizons enthusiast. The controller is well made and pretty comfortable and the versatility of being able to use it across several platforms is really cool.
HOWEVER, it should be noted that this controller does not support the HD Rumble feature that some games (like ACNH) use. That means that when you’re doing certain activities, like fishing, you will not be getting all the cues that the game intends. Making it harder or potentially impossible.
The turbo button is cool and 8bitdo’s implementation is really neat.

It’s always a gamble buying a third-party controller, but 8bitdo seems to really know what they’re doing. I love the aesthetic, it’s like a PS4 controller mixed with a Super Nintendo controller. It’s as comfortable in my hands as a PS4 or Switch Pro controller. The only thing I would advise is maybe getting some thumbstick covers, as they’re a bit slippery (about the same as a PS4 controller). The only other con is the controller doesn’t seem capable of turning on the Switch like the Pro Controller does, but I’m not docking any stars for such a small issue, especially considering it might be something I just haven’t figured out yet. For that one small complaint, it makes up for it by being compatible with nearly every console/PC/emulator/phone. All in all, I’d say it was well worth the purchase price.

Bought this solely to play COD mobile on my iPhone. I have the older model (sn30 pro) for my switch. Both are awesome and if you’re deciding on which one, get this one. You cannot go wrong with this controller. I had a little hiccup connecting it to my iPhone at first but figured it out. General > Accessibility > Switch Controller > Switches > Bluetooth devices. I had to pair it this way then delete it so I could pair it like you would any other Bluetooth device. Not sure why I had to do it this way but it worked

This is a superb controller and definitely a viable alternative to an Xbox One or PS4 controller. It pairs easily with your Nintendo Switch or PC and you can switch between the two with ease. ( You will need a Bluetooth adapter for your PC though ).

After using this controller for a couple of days now, I’ve gotta say it’s a nice controller. It might feel very light but trust me, it’s super durable ( try bending it ). It feels really nice to hold, and I have yet to find my hands getting tired out even after a long session of gaming. When paired to the PC, it acts as an Xbox One controller, which is convenient because it makes it fully compatible with Steam, and also the 8bitdo logo button acts as the Xbox hub on Windows. Latency is really good, and I haven’t noticed any. It’s very responsive with both the Switch & PC and i’ve never had a problem playing games ( although i’m more of a platform gamer, I don’t do shooters ).

In regards to battery life, I’ve never had it die on me once. As long as you charge it overnight when you’re not gaming, you should have no problem using it all day long without a charge.

The only real gripes I have with this controller is it’s slightly mushy d-pad, that *seems* to be getting a little better as it gets worn in more, and then I just wish it had the ability to wake the Nintendo Switch from sleep mode. All in all though, this is definitely a premium controller and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a 3rd party controller. You won’t regret it one bit!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersDpad: 10 (El mejor Dpad en cualquier control)
    Sticks: 8 (Un poco duros)
    Agarre: 10

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIf you’re looking for the short answer, it’s a great controller and feels closest to the PS4 with lesser materials.

I own a pro-controller and LOVE IT. So when looking for controller for my older brother or my friends the joy-cons don’t scream gaming for them. Just to reference I own or at least own my extension all systems.( my two older brothers have Xbox and a PS4)

I say this so that people know I’m familiar with all types of controllers. This one is great! It’s not better than a PS4 controller and I don’t think it’s better than a pro-controller either. (But that’s $70)
So for a solid $50 or maybe $45 controller this is definitely a steal. A good alternative when you have a friend over or if you play co-op with a sibling.

I must say the feeling is great but very plasticy. Also side note, It took me FOR EVER to connect it!
Amazon shopper person reading this, I’m gonna level with you. You’ve come this far reading my review. So I’m gonna be honest. I still don’t know how, but I managed to sync the controller to my switch. I kind of just pressed a bunch of buttons and it worked.

So with that being said I give it 4 stars for great feel and gameplay. Issues I have is the software and the difficulty of pairing it to my Nintendo switch because that sh*t was hard.

Anyway hope you guys make a good decision and have an amazing day because if you’re reading this you deserve happiness.

Hands down recommend this controller. Latency is non-existant. My only issue is how hard it is to connect sometimes. I tend to play with friends and it’s a bitch to switch between Nintendo Switches to play smash. Only reason I gave it 4*s. Other than that, top notch, exactly as described. Just read the directions for how to connect. I highly recommend this controller for everyone. Especially if u play smash. Works great for other games too.

Very good feel in the hand, very little lag, connects without a problem to the switch and android phones and overall works pretty well.
A mobile app for customisation would be nice and also a way to load and switch profiles straight on the controller.
The d-pad, while precise so far, it’s not the best – a bit loose and scratchy.
A headphone jack connection would be welcome and also a way to shorten the throw of the triggers.
All in all it’s a good controller for the price.

I really like the weight, precision, feel and look of this controller. Easy to setup to connect to the PC via wired connection and to the switch using the 8bitdo connector. Only issue is that it doesn’t reconnect to the PC if the cable comes lose during the game leaving only keyboard and mouse as the inputs until you restart and on very rare occasions the controller won’t stop rumbling unless you disconnect it from the desktop.

8bitdo has been the defacto standard for Bluetooth controllers for a while now. Have had a few previously (still one currently) that were all flawless. Needless to say I was a little disappointed to open the box, charge it up, sync it up, only to find that neither the L2 nor R2 shoulder buttons work Replacement initiated. As far as build quality this thing is fantastic! Sturdy, solid, and comfortable. Just can’t wait till I get a working unit!
Update: For Android, use X-Input mode (X+Start) instead of the suggested D-Input mode (B+Start) and everything will work as expected: AWESOME!

The controller feels great, excellent balance and support while holding the controller, even with the phone mount that I bought separately for it. However it is not compatible with Call of Duty Mobile and the touchscreen emulation 8bitdo’s app is very difficult to setup and even after that, it doesn’t work perfectly with the game.

Plays great on the switch and just be aware the Switch mode and Bluetooth mode can’t be on at the same time, you have to switch from one to the other.

Once you’re used to that, works great.

I wished the Switch mode would allow me to turn on my Switch by holding the home button like all my Nintendo controllers let me do.

This controller feels very similar to the DS4 controller but the D-Pad is extremely precise and has the fewest amount of phantom up/down presses out of every controller I’ve ever used. I speedrun challenging platformers such as Celeste and The Messenger where precision is key and I’ve never had accidental diagonal presses. The button customization is nice but the only feature that I really miss is the ability to turn on the Switch with this controller.

    Pros :
    – Amazing D-Pad
    – Remappable buttons

I had tried one of the SN30 series before which I found was quite nice (It was the SN30 Pro, which looks like a SNES controller), so I decided to get one of their controllers for my PC.
This is quite a good controller, set-up was easy my PC quickly found and paired the controller. After fiddling with Steam and a few games they were all easily playable with it.

The controller itself is very comfortable, it’s pretty much a hybrid between the SNES and Playstation controller, I was able to use for extended sessions. The only time it wasn’t very comfortable was when I was trying out a few fighting games using the D-pad (Maybe it’s just that I need to adjust myself to it), but on the bright side I was able to pull off moves on Killer Instinct and King of Fighters 13, without any problems.
It also comes packed with the necessary cables and instructions. I haven’t been able to get a few games to recognize it (yet), but I believe this is more of an issue with the games rather than the controller since 90% of games I tested so far worked with it.

All in all I’m happy with it, it’s a great controller and at a better price than the Xbox one or PS4 controllers.

    Pros:

Controller feels very comfortable in my hands, more so than any other controller I’ve had.

The charger and charging port is USB type C. And all around better than the PS4 and Xbox plugins. The problem I had with the PS4 controller on PC, was the cord eventually kept falling out or it would randomly disconnect. This SN30 controller doesn’t have that issue.

There’s a light on the controller letting you know if the battery gets low.

    Battery life is 20 hours!

The triggers and buttons overall feel very responsive and seem to have no noticeable input lag on any games I’ve played.

    Cons:

Just a small nitpick, but I wish the controller’s battery life would be shown on the controller rather than having the little light blink when it’s dying. Definitely amazing just to have that feature. But not a big problem 🙂

The instructions to hold down X and Start to turn the controller on and pressing the pair button is a little weird. I haven’t figured out if you need to hold them down to turn the controller on for other things because it does seem to just be on the next time I use the controller. Another small nitpick, but maybe the button on the bottom right of the controller (the one that opens the game bar on windows) could’ve been the power button as well? I’m a man and I don’t read instructions so it took me a bit to figure out how to put the controller into pairing mode when I was first setting it up.

    Overall:

Amazing controller, one of the best on the market! For PC, the best controller I’ve ever used! For the Nintendo Switch, definitely recommended over the Switch Pro controller. As even the Switch Pro controller can have ‘joycon/joystick drift’. So if you’re looking for a great alternative, definitely pick up the SN30+!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersOn the Nintendo Switch, the SN30 Pro+ is a gem. Feels great, syncs correctly (READ THE INSTRUCTIONS), and is a tremendous value with everything it includes and great build quality.

On Windows 10, it’s enough of a headache I went back to an Xbox One controller. Even though the SN30 Pro+ does support Xinput, I could not for the life of me get it to adopt the Xbox One button layout in any game. At first it wouldn’t even be detected in games until I manually found it and set it up in Steam, and then even after it was working in games, the buttons were flipped (B and A, Y and X) even though I had gone through both Steam and 8BitDo’s software to tell it to simulate the Xbox layout. Origin and GOG games wouldn’t even detect the controller.

Ultimately, after an hour of testing and fiddling, I decided as much as I like the physical controller, on Windows 10, it wasn’t worth the headache when the Xbox controller plugs in and works flawlessly across every game I’ve ever encountered. Your mileage may vary.

EDIT: After shelving this controller for almost a year, I decided to fish it out and give it another go. Based on that experience, I’m revising my original review. I’m not sure if it was user-error on my part, or a firmware glitch, but the SN30 Pro+ now works beautifully with my Windows 10 games, and I’ve had the opportunity to put it through further testing.

Bottom line? At $50, this thing is a steal. The analog sticks are smooth with just the right amount of resistance. Though I normally prefer the Xbox analog stick layout, I’ve found this controller to be comfortable for sessions of any length. The triggers are nice, the bumpers are fantastic (especially for games that use them frequently like Sekiro or Dark Souls), and my only real issue were a few double-register incidents on the face buttons and poor Bluetooth performance with my PC (which may be my desktop, as it synced perfectly to the Switch). Oh and it comes with a USB-C to USB-A cord, and a rechargeable battery (or you can use AAs if you prefer; Enerloops FTW).

Honestly, if you like the traditional PlayStation controller layout but don’t want to deal with the hassle of getting a DualShock4 to work with Windows, you can’t do better than this thing.

I’ve got to say that there is a lot to like about this gamepad.

I loved the overall design (parallel analog sticks, a “proper” d-pad, USB type-c charging, a removable rechargeable battery / the option to use two AA batteries as an alternative) and the build quality is stellar.

It feels really great in the hands. It is a good size and is weighted nicely. I didn’t have to overextend to reach any of the buttons.

However, there were a couple of things that prevented this from being the gamepad for me.

First, and this is likely specific to the Black Edition, is that it is virtually impossible to read the labels (X, Y, A, B, Start Select) in low light. If you, like me, tend to play games in the dark (or even under anything less than a bright light, you might find it difficult to read the labels.

This may not be a problem for gamers that are used to (and have memorised) the Nintendo / Xbox layout of buttons, but for those of us, such as myself, that prefer the PlayStation-style layout (triangle-circle-X-square), not being able to see the labels was a little annoying.

However, the main issue for me was the fact that, whilst technically compatible with macOS, this gamepad isn’t really compatible with Apple Arcade.

I tried this on a number of different games (Oceanhorn 2, Sneaky Sasquatch, Sociable Soccer, Cricket Through the Ages) and each one seems to recognise the button layout in a different way. Some seem to think it was an DUALSHOCK 4 controller and so on-screen prompts for circle and X were common. Others seem to recognise it and Xbox One controller but would get the A / B and X / Y buttons mixed up (e.g. pressing A would register as B). The later in itself would be too annoying as I am sure it could technically be addressed using 8bitdo’s Ultimate Software but because the games didn’t recognise the gamepad consistently, you’d have to remap buttons every time that you play a different game.

I don’t really think this is 8bitdo’s fault. It is likely more of an Apple / individual game developers’ issue TBH but at the end of the day, it’s enough to prevent me from using the gamepad.

I will, however, continue to use 8bitdo’s products and will keep an eye out for future firmware updates to see if this issue is addressed.

Technically compatible with macOS but not with Apple Arcade

I like how comfortable the controller is, as it’s akin to a PS4 controller in feel. Getting the controller synced up with the Switch was easy, but that same process onwards was a bit tedious as the controller does not wake the console. Gameplay wise, I play Splatoon 2 and Smash Bros. Ultimate and have noticed a small touch of input lag, but not enough to detriment my performance during casual play. The battery feels like it lasts a considerable amount longer than the Pro Controller and after a month of continuous use, there’s no joystick drift! One small nitpick is that the capture button is also the macro button, so taking clips sometimes locks an input in until I unbind it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI got this as a compromise between price and quality, having really liked the old 8Bitdo SF30. It feels exactly like you’d expect: a SNES-style pad with high quality analogue sticks, triggers, and chunky handles grafted on to it. I was surprised at how hefty it felt in the hand – it’s not as slim as the PS4 controller – but it’s still extremely comfortable. The D-pad is stiffer than I would like for Tetris but I think it’s still breaking in, and the button response is excellent. The analogue sticks and triggers are honestly as good as in any first-party pad I’ve used too. I really appreciate being able to use AA batteries and not just the li-ion battery; I suspect the pad should outlast the battery pack quite comfortably. My only major criticism is the very weak rumble with Switch games. The pad can rumble very well when tested on a PC, but for some reason the way it interprets HD rumble from the Switch makes the response very weak.

A word of advice though: you’re not going to be able to read the black button labels on the black pad in a dim room. This is fine for me as I have a pretty good grasp of where the keys are but when someone else is using the controller, it’s not often obvious!

This is my first 8bitdo controller… honestly, I don’t know why people call this a “retro” gamepad. It has all the features of an XBOX controller (buttons anyway.) It is made extremely well, nice and heavy (not uncomfortably so, just enough so that you know it’s quality.) I bought this for PC only, and the Ultimate Software let me change the mappings from Switch-style to XBOX/Xinput style. For years I have sworn by the Logitech F310 gamepad on PC, but this is just plain nicer, plus it has rumble (never had that on a PC gamepad before.) I love this thing.

I bought an 8bitdo bluetooth adapter to connect to my PC (USB connect mode does work, but who doesn’t want wireless?) Probably the best controller I have ever owned, PC or console.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis controller feels almost identical to the Switch Pro controller in terms of quality, with one VERY important difference, it has button mapping. If you’re like me, and play mostly at home on an Xbox, then you know how frustrating it can be when you pick up your Switch while playing on the go and say to yourself, “oh yeah, I’ve got to remember to reverse my A and B, and X and Y buttons now”.

I struggled with this muscle memory battle every time I went back and forth between the two consoles, but no more! Thanks to this controllers button mapping feature (which shame on Nintendo for not just allowing you to map your controls in the settings for the console to begin with), I can now wave goodbye to all of those memories of pressing the wrong button at the worst time goodbye. Great product in everyway you’d want it to be, hence the five star rating.

Personally prefer it over the Switch Pro controller and that costs more.
    Cons:
    – Large size may not be suitable for all hands. Especially if you rely on the joysticks frequently
    – Start and Select can take some effort to reach. Doesn’t bother me as you don’t need fast immediate access to those.
    Pros:
    – Everything else.
    – This is my go to controller for any game that relies heavily on a dpad.
    – The facet buttons feel great and are right up my ally.
    – Though joystick position isn’t great, the actual shape and texture of the joysticks is superb.
    – If you’re worried about accidentally hitting the switch system buttons below the face buttons and dpad it is a non-issue for me.
    – Big beefy shoulder buttons are niiice.

Great controller. Bought for switch. Would have been 5 star but not too keen on home button placement, keep catching In game.

I am just sitting in my gaming chair with my Spiderman Maximum Carnage shirt on and I get a notification from my Ring doorbell… A PACKAGE HAS ARRIVED… Little did I know, it wasn’t just a package, but a life-changing realization in a cardboard box. I excitedly walked out to grab it. I was about to unbox it, but thought “should I make an unboxing video? I’m pretty sure I’ll get like 10 views. I’m a youtube superstar after-all.” NO, I decided against it though because I couldn’t contain my excitement. It was going to pop like a vinegar volcano or a mentos dropped in a bottle of coca cola. Just as I opened the box, a light beamed in from the window and it was as if an old knight was whispering in my ear, “You have chosen wisely.”

I destroyed the box and was immediately disappointed… I needed to CHARGE the controller. I couldn’t… I just couldn’t… My blood began to build pressure. My heart felt as it was about to burst, but then

“1 HOUR LATER” (in French accent)

I finally got the chance to sync the controller to my switch. I logged into my sweet sweet Nintendo Online account. With a twinkie and fruit gushers in my mouth, I had everything I needed for the long haul. Just to set the mood, I turned off the lights in my gaming room and the only lights I could see were from the flicker of my LA Gear sneakers.

Super… Metroid… I jumped in the game and was immediately transported back to the 90’s. The controls didn’t feel sloppy. It was smooth. It was tactile. Then… I realized it. This is proof that we have invented time travel in the future. This designer took the power of hindsight and designed a controller with all of the comforts and technology of modern gaming, but applied it in a way that is retro actively perfect for older games. Upon this realization, I closed my eyes and reveled in the moment. I wanted to absorb this feeling of enlightenment and never forget it.

Til this day, I haven’t opened my eyes.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis controller feels great and is built solidly. The D pad is great. It is my only controller that I have for the switch and I do not feel like I missed out by not having a Nintendo Pro controller. I would recommend this controller, but here are a few small points to consider.
    1. You cannot wake up the switch from sleep mode with this controller. You have to press the power button on the system or use another controller to wake it up.
    2. The home button is below the B button, and I have accidentally pressed it and returned to the home screen in the heat of a hard Mario Maker 2 level.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersExcelente control. Felicidades 8bitdo.

Excelente Gamepad. Uno de los mejores qué hay.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis controller is a quality match for any first party controller. It looks great and feels really well built. It’s as impressive as any Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo controller. The PC software that lets you completely customise the button/trigger/sticks and program macros is easy to use and is a really nice feature.

Unfortunately, the unit I received had almost unreadable button/selector labels. It was barely visible feint black writing on a black controller, so I sent it back. If you don’t mind not being able to see the A, B, X, Y and SELECT/START button labels, then this may not be an issue.

It’s such a good controller that I’ve ordered the white with purple buttoned version to replace it.

8bitdo build some robust controllers. The SN30 Pro + is a great alternative to the Switch Pro controller in my opinion. Sturdy in your hands, analog sticks are comfortable to use (although it’s PlayStation style stick placement, so your mileage may vary), buttons and triggers are responsive.

Only released yesterday so a very early impression

From the point of view of a PC gamer this is the definitive PC gamepad.

You have two choices when setting up for xinput for cross wide windows support. Or switch pro controller mode which works well with steam.

Everything about this pad just feels right.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersLet’s start with the negatives:

    – The left stick on my controller clicks slightly when pushed up, and it isn’t fixed in place well so pushing down is slightly inconsistent. I’m just going to lower the range in the 8bitdo Ultimate Software to work around it.
    – The triggers are very non-linear. Pushing them down halfway reads ~30% and anything about 70% is almost impossible to hit accurately. When actually playing a game, this isn’t too much of a problem, but I still hope it get fixed with a firmware update.
    – The d-pad’s rubber pads are too tall, so it floats above its pivot and can be pressed down all the way. Unlike with a Dualshock 4 V2, though, this doesn’t actually lead to many false inputs, it just feels slightly off since I’m used to SNES controllers.
    – The button layout isn’t quite compatible with the handles and sticks, but it’s passable for 3D games and can be worked around for 2D games by changing your grip.
    – There’s no perfect way to connect this to a PC. Xinput mode works for modern games but combines the triggers in old ones, DirectInput mode treats the triggers as buttons so it’s no better for old games, and gyro controls are only available in Switch mode (which also doesn’t use analogue triggers).

    And now the positives:

    – The sticks are self-calibrating, so every time you turn the controller on it finds the centre point, and moving it in a circle will cause it to find its limits, and they have no jitter. Miles better than the Xbox One and PS4 controllers.
    – The d-pad doesn’t suffer from problems with false inputs. It’s still not as good as a SNES controller in that regard, but it’s better than most others.
    – The shoulder button pivots are closer to the centre than on a SNES controller, so they are easier to press and work well with the slightly weird grip needed for 2D games.
    – When playing 3D games and using the analogue sticks, this thing just melts into my hands. Despite its looks, this is one of the most comfortable controllers I’ve ever used. I prefer to use my middle fingers on the triggers so I can use the shoulder buttons at the same time, and it works perfectly for that, and still works just as well when I’m only using my index fingers.
    – Input lag is good enough, it doesn’t add anything noticeable to the inherent lag of everything else on PC.

Golden Review Award: 24 From Our UsersHaving been a huge fan of previous 8BitDo controllers, I wanted an update to the fantastic SN30 Pro. With a more comfortable grip and better thumsticks the SN30 Pro+ seemed the logical choice.

Unfortunately, after updating to Firmware 3.0.1 through the 8BitDo website, the controller now doesn’t function whatsoever and is unable to connect to a PC or be put into recovery mode.

A shame as the actual controller feels great in the hands, is lightweight and has both fantastic sticks and a D-Pad. Given 8BitDo’s usual quality I’m chalking this up to bad luck more than anything. The analogue triggers are also great for their use in PC gaming.

But my current advice to other would-be purchasers of this controller would be on holding off on firmware updates for the forseeable future.

Edit: Since being issued a replacement by Amazon within 3 days (speedy service!) I have since used this controller (without updating) issue-free.

It is responsive, comfortable and an easy recommendation over the perennially plagued Joy-Con which continue to suffer with drift issues.

I’ve bumped this review to 4 stars due to the quality of the controller but I am still wary of the potential issues arising from firmware updates.

The controller is great. The build quality is great. It feels good in your hands. You can customize the button layout and control the vibration using there software. It has a removable rechargeable battery and the battery pack can be swapped out for 2 AA batteries in case you run out of a charge. Also you can use the controller wireless or wired if you have a long enough USB C cord.

I have 2 small things that bug me about the controller which are that the rumble could be a little more intense. Also this is probably only for the black controller but the letters for XYAB could have been a different shade of black so it would stand out more but instead it blend in with the color of the controller. Other then that the controller is grea

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis review has been completely rewritten by the original author. It contained information that I’ve since found erroneous, and in the sake of fairness, I’m starting fresh.

It’s basically an SNES controller plus handles, twin PS4-style analog sticks and analog shoulder triggers. In short, it’s an amazing controller through and through. Though, there a couple little foibles. For one, if you want to use the controller’s full capability on Windows, you’ll want to connect it in the “Mac mode” (start + A when off), as that will effectively make the controller behave the same way as a Sony DualShock 4. Be warned, though, you’ll have to either use XInput mode (Start + X when off) or an XInput wrapper like XOutput to make the controller get along with most newer games; emulators, however, tend to cope much better with the “Mac mode”, which is basically what I was berating the manufacturer about in the previous versions of my review. Do keep in mind– the “Mac mode” will most likely require use of a program called “DXTweak2”– Google it– to function 100% correctly on Windows– just like a DS4.

Enough rambling, down to the nitty-gritty. How’s it feel to use? Friggin’ amazing. It’s got a good weight and build quality to it, on-par with first-party controllers and most Hori accessories.

I have the “black” edition, which means the controller is satin-black all over. This is rather problematic for reading anything written on the controller– black-on-black = no bueno — but it’s no problem for me since I’m well aware of what button does what– though I would appreciate some kind of mod kit that would let me swap in the colorful face buttons of a Super Famicom controller. A silicone skin would also be appreciated sometime down the line.

The sticks are very good– even better than my DualShock 4 controllers. They seem to be made to tighter tolerances, and have a very lovely snapback action.

The triggers, when configured, are fantastic. Quite sensitive, and a large point of contact, akin to XBone controllers. The overall layout is what would happen if a Switch pro controller, an SNES controller and a DualShock4 all merged together and formed a new shape, with the SNES controller emerging as the base shape.

The D-pad is almost a tit-for-tat match to that of an original SNES controller– that is to say, utterly brilliant, and one of the best I’ve used.

Overall, I still have some lingering dissatisfaction over the triggers– first impressions count– but I’ve fallen in love (not like that, you sickos) with this controller. It’s got a place of honor next to my second-gen DS4. Score: 4 stars.

I got this controller mainly because of SMM2 but I’ve been playing more platformers since I got this controller and it works great. Fun for Tetris 99 too! I’ve only used this controller on the switch so far and it works perfectly. It’s built very sturdily and feels like it was built by a triple a company. The only reason that it doesn’t have a perfect rating is because the box came with very minor damage on the corners and I personally don’t like the style of the rubbery start and select buttons.

Golden Review Award: 65 From Our UsersThe software is wonky but okay, getting it synced to the Switch was odd but that’s what instruction manuals are for (though if you wanna skip, hold Y and Start then hold the sync button for 3 seconds, then go to change grip/order) but I literally only got this controller for 1 reason and 1 reason only- The Dpad.

I just wanted a quality controller with a good Dpad, and the previous model is too small for my hands. This is exactly what I wanted. And it’s PC compatible. AND it’s got that sexy 8bitdo retro aesthetic. No HD Rumble or NFC, but that’s a solid compromise to me and it still has gyro~

If you need a better Dpad for 2D platformers, fighting games or Tetris, this is a VERY good option even if you don’t have a Switch~
