Very pleased with it I use it to keep the room cool mainly for the dog as the heat can be unbearable in Sandwhich Kent it’s very easy to move and looks stylish overall well worth the price I paid for it. It was also delivered very quickly.
Works great and reduced the room temp from 28c to 18c in less than an a hour ..
worth the money
Smaller than average footprint considering the power of this unit. It is quite loud when it’s working at maximum. I just wish it circulated the air as it does look like the grille on the front should rotate. It would have been so much better if this was the case. But it certainly cools the room down quickly
This is easily one of the best impulse buys I’ve made, it’s so good.
The entire unit does everything so even in the quietest setting it’s fairly noisy as it’s fanning, cooling, dehumidifying and so on, but put it on 1-2 hours before bed and it’s a dream.
I’ve cooled the bedroom to a comfy 18C, when the main house thermostat has been on 30C. It has a night mode but it’s too noisy for me to sleep with, if you’re used to sleeping with a fan on it’s probably a similar level to that, maybe a little louder. You do need a window open to use so if lots of traffic noise that’s a consideration you’d have to make.
For me, putting it on before bed and getting a cool room to fall asleep in does everything I need from it.
It’s portable on the same floor on the wheels but too heavy to be moving between floors in a house.
This air con saved us from the British heatwave. The only issue is that it can only really manage to cool 1 room so we all ended up having to sleep in the living room. Still, that one room was cool enough to give us the sleep we needed. You are going to have to buy a window vent as well though. It doesn’t come with one.
Seems taller than I was expecting but it’s truly brilliant so I didn’t care. Cooled my small bedroom from 29oC to 22oC in 45mins. Can get to 18oC.
My small bedroom defeated my old air con as there are so many heat sources but this new air conditioner handled them like a hot knife through warm butter.
The Which? review says it’s not portable or is difficult to move, but I haven’t had problems with it. The wheels are a bit small and it might tip over, but a responsible adult who isn’t particularly old and frail will be able to move it around just fine on hard floors. You might need to pull and lift a bit more on carpet, but it’s not that bad.
I focus on this because Which? were saying it’s a bad product because of that, but it’s significantly (100+) cheaper than the other things they reviewed & I think the performance and cost saving far outweighs this supposed mobility issue. It’s great for taking the edge off of hot summer days in well insulated flats. Do figure out where you’re going to put the exhaust pipe though — it’s hard to find adapters for typical UK windows and doors.
As our summers seem to get hotter and hotter I bought this unit in order to make the kids and our bedroom temperature more bearable overnight. This unit has been brilliant in achieving this and was lucky enough to buy this just before the hot weather started so got a very good price on Amazon.
The unit is effective and cools air rapidly although can be a little noisy when the compressor is going at full speed. Once the room is detected to be at the set Temperature then it settles down to maintain the temp with less noise.
My one (minor) criticism would be that each button press on either the remote or unit triggers a very loud beep which cannot be muted or softened. This can be disruptive when using the unit at night time Although in reality very rarely have to change the settings once it’s set up.
The negatives are:
1. It’s pretty noisy.
2. You cannot change the direction of the air from the louvers or grill.
3. The exhaust hose is pretty short in length.
4. The first few times using it it emitted a distinct chemical smell but that’s disappeared thankfully.
The positives are:
1. Cools the living room down quickly so doesn’t need to be on for a long time.
2. It’s pretty powerful for the size of my use case.
3. I’ve not had to empty the water tank just yet.
To add; Black and decker have nothing to do with this product and merely have their name on it. I’ve had this for a couple of months so cannot say how it fairs long-term just yet.
Hard to work with on of them in the room. Bose noise canceling headphones make it manageable.
Amazing cooling capabilities and can easily drop the temps in our entire 830 sq ft apartment. Has 3 fan settings – the lowest already being quite strong. But the noise is pretty jarring. I’m OK with it but my girlfriend resorted to earplugs through the night because it was so loud.
This was a wine induced impulse buy from treasure truck one especially hot day. When it arrived the next day my teens were rather amused by my latest prime-cident. However, my bedroom quickly became the place to hang out and CHILL!!!!
Love it. It’s fairly quiet. Sleep mode is great. It is effective and powerful. Best buy this yea
Good machine. Sound is not an issue. However the fan only mode gives a peculiar odour, which you feel after a while.
A bit loud but certainly cools the rooms massively! It literally feels like an AC in a store.
Works very well and a nice size. Wheels are helpful
Only used the A/C function so far, it certainly provides effective cooling sufficient for cooling a reasonable space.
I would recommend getting an extension vent hose as the one it comes with is only suitable if placing the unit next to a window. For me this was not possible. It is noisy but I believe this is usual.
Heavy as hell, struggled to take it up and downstairs, it’s loud so you’ll need to turn tv up. We had it upstairs one night and had earplugs in. But excellent in the current UK heat wave. My pregnant partner can live comfortably again and dog appriciates it too.
It’s nice, does what it is supposed to do but is too noisy. If I could return it, I would. I have bought another portable AC unit from Invertor Magic, and it is much quieter. Unfortunately, the Black+Decker has that fridge noise. I am not saying it is not a good unit. It is, but too noisy. I would have expected more from 645.
i brought this portable conditioner for my children’s room , works very well , temperature come down very quickly , if you do buy one remember to take the unit out the box and leave it up right for about 3 hours to let the gas settle , reading reviews i can honestly say its about as noisy as a medium size fan but well within what you could cope with , i was able to put the flue pipe through the small bedroom window and closed the curtains around the pipe , seemed to do the job as well , the actual flue is very rigid i thought so you might have to place the conditioner further away from the window , cools an average sized room with ease , all in all a good buy and would recommend
This is the best portable AC unit i have owned.
Is it noisy – yes, they all are. So no shock there.
Does it work… 100% yes.
Had it in the front room on the hottest day of the year and took the unit up to bed – bedroom was 32c, turned on the AC for 20-30mins and it had the temp in the room down to 18c. Can set to come on in the night automatically if the temp goes above a certain level so sleep is undisturbed. For best results keep the doors closed in the room you are in, although it will cool the whole floor you are on, it cools faster when enclosed in a room.
Certainly louder than advertised but to be honest if the choice is hot and uncomfortable or a bit of noise, bring on the noise!
Remote does not come with a battery and for an expensive unit this little extra cost a star. I bought a pack of 10 for 3.49 – so would have cost them 0.34p to put one in the remote, silly not too. Battery is a CR2032 3V battery so not something you have at home normally.
It works !!! Push air strongly, it’s ok for my appartment 60 sqm in UK
Pick your poison, noise or uncomfortable heat.
The 7000btu unit I have cooled our 5m bedroom from 26C to 23C in 2 hrs.
Im on my bed now relatively cool compared to when I leave this room.
Those 3C MAKE A DIFFERENCE. It may get cooler, the longer I leave it on for, but I’m already greatful.
Its LOUD! Not so loud I don’t think I’ll sleep. But loud.
Overall I’m glad to be cool. It’s a bit pricey and loud, but will definitely cool 1 room .
Its not made by Black and decker, their brand is just licensed to this unit. The build quality is ok and the coolant is propane. I’ve done some research, propane in your bedroom is not as bad as it seems.
I’d recommend this A/C
This is a great quality air conditioner comes with hose.
Only thing is that it’s not that quiet but makes up for it by the cold setting.
This has to be emptied via a screw of bung. Comes with short hose .
Mine is close to my back door so I can drain it outside.
Ideal for small room!
I have nothing bad to say about the main function or noise or design as such, but there are two things you should know. 1) It doesn’t have a built in tray/box for the condensation water so you have to crawl on the back bottom and insert a tube in the valve and let it flush out in some of your kitchen containers (and some on the floor). 2) you can’t regulate where the airflow goes as it doesn’t have any “fins” that you can control – and hence there is no swivel effect.
Hence: if you are used to empty your current AC often and/or if you find it nice with a directional (or dynamic) air flow, then you might want to look at something else. Otherwise a great machine.
Bought this for our bedroom, as a night shift worker sleeping during the day in summer heat is a real issue, fortunately this great value aircon unit does the job perfectly, its a little noisey but in my experience mobile units tend to be, so if noise is a concern then you’d probably benefit from a fixed ported aircon unit which will set you back over twice the cost and will obviously not be mobile.
Noise wasn’t an issue for me as I also use earplugs when sleeping during the day but it’s not exactly deafening and the pro’s by far outweigh the cons in my opinion, good looking unit with good functions.
Managed to cool the room down sufficiently quickly, has a useful remote control that sits in a pocket on top of the unit when not in use..
Great value portable unit highly reccomended.
Bought this for my son, he has said its the best thing we have bought him. It does a fantastic job.
Don’t know why lot of people complained about the cooling but this certainly makes a difference and lowers your room temperature down. It has strong air flow. Even cooled down an open plan area. A bit noisy but that’s normal with these aircons. Also looks elegant in design and easily portable. Doesn’t take much space either. Highly recommended.
To anyone expecting the experience of a split aircon – be prepared for compromise.
In this case the compromise would s volume and efficiency. The compressor is part of the machine, although substantially quieter than my previous portable air con. I find it quite tolerable and I not an unpleasant sound or volume, although you may have issues if you intend to Video call whilst it’s on – depends how close you are to it. No portable machine is going to be as quiet as a split one; window air con is probably the only other half way house.
It will chill down a small or medium size room well, but for a large room get the 12k BTU unit. Mine seems to run at 900W power which is fine for my use but if you run this 24/7 it will hit your electric bill (~3 per 24hr)
It is also huge, foot print is not enormous but it is a tall and physically big appliance, and heavy. You’ll want to keep it in one place throughout the summer and not lug it up and down the stairs on a daily basis as it is heavy, but it is on rollers.
Nice finish, remote works, no app control but really, it’s not all that necessary.
Also, be aware I have seen this machine fluctuate significantly in price so you might want to try looking to buy one on a cold wet day and not a scorcher. This machine went up 100 a few days after I bought it when temp went up to 27 Celsius.
2 yr warranty is good. Although I haven’t found the machine on the B&D website which is a head scratcher but I guess it must be made by a different manufacturer and simply B&D rebranded.
All in all, very pleased.
I have the 9000 BTU version with the slits, not with the round exhaust.
It’s loud but that was expected. It cools fast enough. I recommend the purchase of a window seal (a tent-like piece of fabric with a zip in the middle that is applied around a window with velcro).
For this price the functions feel a bit basic, the slits have to be manually adjusted to change the air flow. I would have liked an automatic air flow direction control.
It has a sturdy handle at the top to lift it, and convenient wheels underneath.
12000BTU. Stick it in my back garden pub. Had to cut a hole and buy a through pipe so a bit tidying up inside but I had a party the other night and as soon as it got a bit warm I stuck it on and ( mins it was at an acceptable level of coolness. Room is about 4m by 4m there was 8 guys in it and it as magic. Didn’t even notice the noise that’s because we are noisy as hell! Very pleased and it looks cool too!
I’ve been contemplating buying an air conditioning unit for some time now. Having given in with traditional fans just re-circulating the same warm air around and not doing anything else i decided to buy one… this one. It came two days after ordering so i was quite pleased with how quick it came. Having only used this for 2 days i’ve been extremely won over by it’s ability to cool my room right down. Easy to set up but It is a tad on the heavy side. It does have wheels so once on the ground it’s easy to just roll around.
Sound levels are acceptable but if you’re looking for something on the quieter side this isn’t going to suffice. There’s a constant buzz along with the fan noise on any setting. However, i was able to sleep through with it on the lowest setting. As i say not the quietest but it is bareable.
The room i use it in is a 4m x 3m and it is more than adequate at cooling my room down within 20 minutes of use.
I didn’t give it the full 5 stars for two reasons:
1) There is no window kit supplied so i’ve had to order this separately to help seal the rest of the window where the air vent tube hangs out.
2) No battery in the remote that it comes with and again have had to order separately for this (it’s a CR2032 3V battery for anyone wondering).
I hope this review helps anyone looking to purchase one.
Omg this machine is fantastic! I have a large 2 bedroom flat with south facing wall to wall windows. The heat gets unbearable in the UK heatwave. I’ve added tinted windows, the tall Dyson fans to the bedrooms and have kitchen and bathroom extractor fans running on the north facing side. Plus I keep the humidity low with a big dehumidifier machine. Which has all helped, but I use a clothes dryer condenser machine every day. Once that heat is in the flat, it’s very hard to get it out again. Especially when there is no breeze coming through the windows and it’s very humid outside. Our flat went up to 29c last year, before I even put the dryer on. So this year I read as many reviews as possible, and decided I had no choice but to take the plunge and make my own mind up. So glad I did. Yesterday my indoor temp was 27c and with the air con on full speed it lowered it by 2degrees within 10 minutes. I left the living room door open the whole time, and not only does the whole room feel like I’m sitting in an air conditioned car, but it makes my long narrow hall way cold as well. After an hour the bedrooms started feeling cooler and then I was able to put my clothes dryer on. Yes its a bit noisey. But we can hear the tv over the loudest speed setting. So isn’t bothering us. I’ve added a quick video clip to show how it does reduce down in noise on the medium and lowest settings on full air con mode. Ignore the background tapping, that was the dog walking around wanting to be involved lol. Having low humidity to start of with, I think may be the key to why this machine instantly feels my room and hall up with beautiful cold air, to the point where Im actually feeling too cold and have to turn the machine down if the clothes dryer isn’t on by 5pm. But keeping it running cooled the bedrooms down even further for bedtime. The wooden floors instead of carpet probably help as well. We haven’t fitted the window kit yet. I’m sure that’s going to make a difference as well, especially when that horrible humidity outside rises. The soft breeze outside yesterday wasn’t blowing any of the exhaust hose heat back in the window. Today no breeze and I can feel the heat outside enter near the window only. The machine is still keeping the room lovely and cold. Another trick I found, was using a desk fan on my kitchen unit, near the door way, facing outwards. This helped direct the cool air in my hall to reach the bedrooms faster. One room is on the south side same size as my living room (pics added to give you a rough idea of the room size) and my sons double bedroom on north side, has gaming equipment that heats his room like a heater. This portable air con machine btu1200 is making the world of difference, from just being situated in the living room. I definitely wouldn’t be without it now. Update Today: Even with the temperature outside at 29c, and the low humidity in my flat, the machine makes it feel like 21c instead of the reading in the living room showing 25c for instance. Rest of the flat it got the temp down to 26c but still feels nice and cool with a nice breeze affect flowing around. After 2.30pm my bedroom was down to 25c as well. Today I’m using the auto setting. It switches from air con to cooling fan superbly. Which also switches automatically through the speed settings. The noise in the room just blends in the back ground when the tv’s on and the families home. I’ve had annoying, useless floor stand fans worse than this noise. So the noise isn’t bothering us and hardly noticeable in the rest of the flat. When it’s in fan only mode, it’s even better than my tall Dyson fans. Plus with its self dehumidifier working in air con mode. I no longer have to use my separate dehumidifier machine. Haven’t had to drain no water out of the machine yet. But this is only the second day.
Update: third day is raining, very hot and humid. My flats humidity over night went up to 56. I even turned my old dehumidifier machine on around midnight and the tank was full by the morning and again in the afternoon. So thankful to the kind Amazon member! Who not only replied back quickly to my question, of whether I could use the air con machine on rainy days. But also took the time to do a quick video as well. It was very much appreciated! So I set about adding a waterproof window kit and pointed the hose out the window. Making sure it was pointing down to help prevent rain getting in it. Worked a treat. Plus today I’ve had the auto mode setting on all day. Due to the high humidity still in my flat because of this hot rainy weather. Took longer to cool and reach the bedrooms down the hall. But baring in mind, I did have the clothes dryer on for 2 hrs and my front room and hall were still super cold. The machine makes much less noise in auto mode as well, not just because it’s switching between fan and speed settings. But it seems to run with a smoother noice it seems. Either that or I’m just already accustomed to it being back ground noise now. I ran the machine for 12hrs today and my electric smart meter device was only showing 3.89 for the whole day. Usually it shows 2.50 to 3.00 depending how many times I have the clothes dryer on. So for less than a pound a day to run the air con for that amount of time, is fantastic. I’m still dreading the day the water needs emptying though. I’ve no idea how much will need to come out. It’s a pity they haven’t designed one with a removable tray to empty, like a dehumidifier machine has.
Bought on promotion- arrived within a few days even though there was initially no delivery date. Easy set-up. A little noisier than expected but cools a pretty big space down quite quickly.
I have only run this for a few minutes but I will tell you what I like and what I don’t like.
I also like the simple controls & the included remote control. It is very simple to use and fits into a recessed slot on top of the A/C unit.
I like how reasonably quiet this A/C unit is, though it’s an air conditioner and they are always going loud. The unit I purchased this to replace is a 16 year old model of unknown BTU and this Black & Decker is indeed less noisy. It seems wrong to describe this unit as quiet as all A/C units are loud, but this model is not too bad. It isn’t annoying.
I also like the design, it is quite a stylish looking air conditioner.
What I don’t really like is how large it is….inexplicably large….larger than it seemingly should be…and this is one heavy beast! Also in the dislike category are the “handles”, which are a joke. They are simply indentations in the side, which requires you to use only your fingertips to lift. Not good.
I also do not like how short the exhaust hose is…it’s quite short at 1.5 metres. The Black & Decker exhaust hose is so much shorter than my unbranded, 16 year old 3 metre hose. It just seems like cost cutting for the sake of it.
All of these niggles aren’t a reason to take a star off this unit as it is really is quite nice, but this last one is quite annoying. The louvres (vent slats) are fixed in place, which no review or the Amazon product description mentions, so I have to physically turn the entire unit if I want to have air in a specific direction. I cannot think of a single reason why Black & Decker would have done this.
This really is reason enough to return an air conditioner. I would return this in a moment if it didn’t weigh almost 35kg and because of its size it is quite unfriendly for the postman. The Post Office might ban me if I turned up with this item!
I really hate the fixed louvres – they make ZERO sense on an air conditioner. Accordingly I have removed a star. This is otherwise a decent air conditioner. It was made better with the more than one hundred pound discount on Amazon, but there are better units around. Maybe not for the price, but they are there.
Liked the style, reasonably quite, user friendly, works really well, could do with longer electrical lead, overall very pleased, reasonably priced
Really nice and cold chills my whole 2 bed room apartment to 19 outside 25 uk, unfortunately when on sleep mode or low fan speed there seem to start a rattle when the condenser is running such as something is lose or that the unit wants to stall as when high speed engaged the rattle slowly goes away with fan speed incress :/ hmm strange, no battery included with controller other then that it is a top product saves what it does and the fan on it is pretty darn good compared to the traditional out the top units, hose 1.5 meters get what you get have another 1.5 extention works grea
This machine cools a room very fast, as long as you have purchased and installed a window/door sealing kit. It’s even better if you sit in the airflow and you are cool in seconds, it’s an Aircon not a fan so yes it gets cold. If you are familiar with Aircon you will know that it consists of a refrigerator and an extractor fan, bit of which are very noisy. In regular installation this is mitigated by having the bulk of the unit installed outside and just the fan inside…. that’s not possible in my flat. So this unit is the best option. Yes it is loud, not sleep mode doesn’t make any difference to the volume, and yes I can sleep perfectly fine with it. After a few days the volume just blends into background and the temperature is what you will care about. Highly recommended and the build quality is superb. The wheels make it easy to move around to different rooms. I’m in a two bed flat and move it from the lounge/kitchen to the bedroom periodically
For my flat dining and living room approx 21sq meters this thing is a godsend it works so quickly. I cooled the space down by 5 degrees in less than 20 minutes on a hot day. It is not that loud really for an air-conditioning unit at this price. I really not understand how anyone can say it does not represent value for money. Design is sharp and modern looking too
I think this is good value for money. Works very well and you have to experiment as the instructions are useless with certain quirks in operation. First I agree with other reviews, it is noisy in anything other than sleep mode, but it works and is good for the sale price, 460, I wouldn’t keep it. Two things to look out for, 1) the cool temperature can only be set when the thing is cooling the room, may sound strange, but if it is on automatic and fan only, you will see what I mean; 2) the drain plug for the water tank is so low, it is going to be a pain draining the stupid thing. Been using this over the recent heatwave and I am very pleased with the result.
Smaller and more powerful than expected. Housemate has an older air con unit which is much larger and more cumbersome than this Black & Decker 9000BTU air conditioner. This cooler is much more effective than the older unit. Unfortunately no automatic “swing” mode for the louvers at the front (-1 star), they can only be manually positioned but do direct air flow very effectively.
Comes with a good range of adapters and fittings, including a decent length of ducting.
In auto mode, the unit will cycle through its various modes automatically as it attempts to keep the room at the set temperature. It does a very good job at achieving the set temperature on auto mode, even with the sun shining through the window. The dehumidifier function also works very well.
The unit is no louder than the average air-con unit but does get a fair bit louder when set to “high” vs when set to “low” (the only two speed settings). I have no problem sleeping next to the unit in “low” speed mode.
My phone app measures the Low setting at 50db, the High setting at 60db (measured right next to the air con unit).
Overall a much higher quality item than i expected, although there are some buttons which do nothing (seemingly reserved for higher spec versions of the unit) which take away a little from the overall feel of quality.
A good all around air con. It works well and cools a large room. It is quite large and does make quite a bit of noise. It’s a bit like having a car running in your house :s. The most annoying thing about it was the hose length which is really short and wouldn’t reach my window which meant I had to buy an extension kit. It would be better if they included a longer hose and worked out a way to get it connect to windows that open at an angle.
A bit noisy – but otherwise just what we need
Excellent cooling, great for the price. A bit noisy, but rest everything is brilliant about this AC.
It’s great only had it for a couple months but it is really effective cools the room down well
It is a bit loud but not annoyingly loud it’s easy to forget and easy to sleep with it on
Overall really happy definitely worth the money
Bought my shed down from 32C to 26C in about 45-60 mins and that was with the door slightly open and unsealed to put the pipe out. It is quite noisy but ive not used a portable before so i dont have anything to compare it to. Very happy with it though and it makes my working environment much more comfortable.
This is solidly built, it’s easy to setup and use, and it produces cold air. These single exhaust units can only do so much but this kept our bedroom very cool during the UK heatwave.
Works fine but you have to purchase a window/door venting kit separately. Very compact and stylish compared with most.
Purchased this to replace an ageing one purchased from a DIY store over 7 years ago. First this is very stylish and Sturdy product, I particularly like the size and chrome effect on the front and clear digital display. The product contains withIn a tank for when using the dehumidifier to collect water and can easily be drained from a tap at the back. However this makes the same amount of noise as our old one. Overall nice stylish product, but certainly isn’t quiet in operation.
