My dad had one when I was a kid. It lasted for donkey years hence why I bought one now in my mid fifties. Great product.

Although the instructions are a little complicated, this is a fairly easy item to put together. It’s sturdy enough for what I want to use it for and actually more useful than I initally thought it would be. Certainly a workbench to consider especially if you’re, like me, getting back to DIY this is very useful.

A lovely piece of kit worth having. The instructions are terrible though. The instructions and diagrams need to be changed. Especially for placing the black slides under the wood which is the vice. It took two of us to put the handles on as the split pin is very awkward to insert. Well worth having though at a very good price. I chose the urgent delivery and it came early. A steel hammer is required to hammer the split pin into the black handle. Don’t go by any You Tube videos to put this together. You have to work it out for yourself. If you are mechanically minded you can do it. PC. 07. 12. 2022.

Workmate does exactly what it claims, nice bit of kit for the money. The instructions are really really bad. I resorted to YouTube videos. Which helped, but most of those are really badly filmed by people holding phone in one hand while putting it together with other. But that was far better than the instruction leaflet.

Excellent and highly versatile piece of kit. Slightly challenging to construct admittedly, but not impossible to work out – not necessarily from using the instructions. Recommended

Well made sturdy product.A little confusing to put together but possibly user inability and not the instructions! Holds wood etc in place very well.Folds easy to hang up with other tools.

    Superb workmate.
I dd try purchasing a much cheaper alternative from a well known merchant, but that was a dreadful experience – flimsy and crooked.
This B&D workmate is just so much better and oozes quality. It also has the befit of the dual height setting.
It goes together very well with good instructions.
Worth the price for a quality product which is built to last.

If you ever get this together it’s a good bench. This is the worst set of assembly instructions I have ever known. Ignore them and go on YouTube where even they struggle but get there eventually. Beware when you get to putting the handle pins in. The amount of hammering force required is ridiculous and it’s very easy to hit and damage the vice wood (which I did).

Assembly was o.k. until I found one of the bolt holes had no thread to attach wooden vice sheet.Obtained tap and cut thread. After that all went smoothly.

It’s grate, nice and solid, don’t wobble like most, and easy to put up and found down, hangs on the wall in garage so not taking up room, grate product.

Had my first one of these 35 years ago a blue one which I still have but it’s due for retirement. I have used others over the years and they have not stood up to household DIY. Fair to say that one or two were cheap and nasty. Anyway decided to replace my old faithful with a new one and fair play it’s as good as the original. So glad I got it. Good old B&D don’t bother with the cheap ones you won’t the return !! they don’t last.

Bought for my husband for a birthday present. He has had one for years. However this one had worn out. He assembled the bench but found that one part had to be tapped i.e. a screw thread made in it before the final assembly of that park could take place. He was able to do this although not very happy, anyone else would have returned the item as impossible to assemble

This work bench is fine but not as good as they used to be. Not as sturdy or as robust. Handle mechanism is poor in quality & loose. On this example, I couldn’t fit one of the wooden jaws because one of the two boltholes that secure it to the winding mechanism had not been drilled and threaded properly and I could not get the bolt in. Due to the limited tolerance to use a different method of securing, it wasn’t possible to adapt it, so it had to be returned. Such a shame as it was a Christmas present for my daughter.

This is a very sturdy Bench for the price love the actual product now I have built it, however I did struggle with the instructions. The instructions did not label the screws etc and a couple of the bits looked the same on the instructions but had different holes, some round some hexagon shaped so not sure which to put where, had to use the picture on the box for a lot of it and used a lot of common sense. The pictures in the instruction book were very small when it came to the fittings and where to put them so that did not help either. If its the first time putting something together I think you may struggle so help would be required.

The lightweight workmate is great for the lighter job. But if you’re using it to run bench saws or band saws, you need the heavier one.
But great value for money and thoroughly useable.

Assembly information poor, but easy to assemble with common sense, look on the pictures on the box . Had a problem with one of the self tapping bolts , had to drill larger hole then fit nut and bolt plus handles fittings are poor quality.

Like most of my older generation, I have had a trusty workmate for 25-30 years. Although still perfectly usable, I decided to give it a dignified retirement and spend 69 on a WM626. Based on the theory that in the past products were made to a quality, whereas now they are simply made to a price, and most other reviews saying it is very flimsy, requiring full assembly, with indecipherable instructions, my expectations were not that high.

Contrary to the above, the whole frame was fully assembled, and a bag containing a dozen or so parts was all that needed self assembly. The instructions could have been understood by a strategically shaved monkey, why would you write a paragraph explaining how to insert a bolt into a hole, when a picture of a bolt with an arrow pointing to the hole is quite sufficient. The assembly took no more than ten minutes, and this included drinking a cup of tea.
The pressed steel metal frame was more than sturdy enough, and although possibly marginally thinner gauge than my previous workmate, would be more than adequate for all household tasks.
I cannot understand why anyone would want a workmate in the first place if they could not get their head around a few simple self assembly parts. They are quite obviously not cut out for DIY.
In conclusion, for 69 more than happy with this product.

Good little bench for home diy. A pain to assemble, the instructions are useless. YouTube came in handy for that.

Lots of changes over the years but still strong and durable. The plywood top is now bamboo but rated at 250kg. Try that with the cheaply made MDF topped imitators.
If you have enough confidence to use one for DIY then you will be able to build one!

Instructions to assemble is very very hard decipher. There is no description of the parts just pictures. But description of the steps mentions parts as A, B, C etc which you’ll have to figure it out yourself what they referring to. The product was slightly damaged which I am not very happy about. And I don’t seem to have an option just for that part to be replaced.

More assembly required than expected, but achieved. Slight difference in thickness of wooden top pieces, so when closed together worksurface not flat. Black and Decker number provided by Amazon closed due to Covid. Therefore difficult to send back after assembly. Made up difference by fitting washers under wood, so acceptable.

The Workmate hasn’t changed it’s design much in 50 years, because it’s hard to improve on such a classic. Portable, easy to operate, versatile and extremely robust, it’s a must-have piece of equipment for anyone interested in DIY projects. The only criticism is that it arrives flat-packed and the assemby process and instructions aren’t immediately obvious. But after thinking about it a bit, there really is only one way it can be assembled and it’s a matter of following your logical common sense! Once it’s put together you’ll find yourself reaching for it for all sorts of jobs! An essential!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersLooked at this Black & Decker workmate numerous times but the reviews were really bad, which, kept putting me off. Then on the fourth or fifth time I looked a positive review appeared raving about the product. This inspired me to buy (Thought if the product was really that bad i could return it).
The black & Decker work mate is brilliant piece of kit just as good as the original. It took me 15 minutes max to assemble.
Don`t be put off by all the negativity this is a great product, haven`t stop using it seen i bought a couple of months ago.
