Bosch Home and Garden Random Orbit Sander PEX 220 A (220 W, in carton packaging)
PEX 220 A
Excellent results when sanding curves and polishing.
Excellent Material Removal Rate
The Bosch PEX 220 A is a powerful random orbit sander that excels due to its high material removal rate. However, this system from Bosch is so handy that it can also be used for ‘tricky’ sanding and polishing tasks, for example in hard-to-reach areas or on surfaces with curves.

High PerformanceThe PEX 220 A provides exceptionally fine, high-performance sanding and delivers the best results, also when polishing. The PEX 220 A also features the microfilter system developed by Bosch. The built-in dust extraction element collects dust directly at the workpiece and feeds it into the supplied microfilter box. The advantage of this is that sanding can also be performed in furnished rooms. | Ergonomic DesignDue to its compact design and low weight, the PEX 220 A random orbit sander from Bosch is also suitable for use with one hand. This tool has therefore been designed to minimise user fatigue when working overhead and on curved surfaces. The PEX 220 A is a universal random orbit sander that offers a high material removal rate when working on large surfaces. | Perfect FinishDIYers can use lambswool bonnets for surface finishing after polishing. These remove dried-on polish residues and are suitable for use on dry and curved surfaces. Different versions of dust boxes and dust bags for collecting the sanding dust are also available from Bosch. | Sand Large SurfacesThis Bosch system is equipped with a 125 millimetre diameter sanding pad. This ensures that the user is able to sand even large surfaces and hard materials quickly. The orbital stroke rate of the PEX 220 A is up to 24,000 opm, while the orbit diameter is 1.25 millimetres. |
- Power input 220 W
- Sanding pad diameter 125 mm
- Orbital stroke rate 24.000 opm
- Eccentricity 1.25 mm
- Machine weight 1.4 kg
Comprehensive accessories
Bosch supplies the PEX 220 A with a Bosch microfilter, a rubber sanding plate and a sanding sheet (Red Wood). A wide range of accessories for the system is also available to the user, for example various sanding sheets for different materials such as paint, filler, varnishes, wood, metal or rust. Polishing sponges for high-gloss polishing and polishing felts for pre-polishing very dirty or scratched surfaces are also available.

Does what it says on the box! Easy to use, great value for money and ideal for someone who needs a relatively cheap but durable sander.
Good design that fits neatly in your palm, sanding discs are simple to replace and the dust extraction works surprisingly well, not to much vibration given off so you can use for long periods without your hand going numb I highly recommend it.
Like it, does the job which for me is some small diy. Filter thing is ok I suppose hence 4 stars
Excellent little sander but the fitted filter is tiny and fills easily. However, the Bosch 2600306007 filter adapter, also available here on Amazon, fits a treat and offers simple connection to my dust extraction vacuum.
easy to use and handle. a very good price. it’s annoying that it makes a lot of mess and loud noise. my neighbors don’t think they were too happy about the noise. in a workshop it is definitely perfect.
As a boat owner I have done a lot of sanding by hand in the past so I was very pleased with the rate of material removal and smoothing performance (This is my first so I can’t compare with other brands). I had no problems with fitting and removal of the dust collector, good solid connector appropriate for the vibration (why not a round connector that I could fit to the vac’). Horizontal dust removal was good (varnish), vertical and inverted dust does escape (soft Antifouling) plenty of dust to shake out of the container so it is doing something. Very light sanding pressure seems to keep the paper from clogging though some modern paints are horrible for this even sanding by hand. No problem with retaining the sanding paper, from what I see this hook and loop type fixing is industry standard.
Bought this to sand down a car spoiler as it was taking ages to do by hand , managed to sand it within like 30 minutes. Pads are easy to change and cheap on eBay etc . Collects the dust fairly well . Easy to use with one hand . But does leave your hand with a vibration feeling
So far so good. I’ll have to see how it handles some bigger jobs.
My first random orbital sander, really easy to use. Worth checking out some YouTube tutorials first.
This orbital sander may be at the cheap end of the Bosch range but it’s a very capable tool. Comfortable to use it’s a single speed work horse which produces cracking results when used properly with the appropriate grit pads. The pads are very easy to change and once on they stick like glue, line up the holes for effective dust collection into an attached filter unit – it’s when you empty that you realise how good the tool is . Achieved some great finishes on what started as raw projects
I purchased this sander for a number of jobs. So far i have used it to sand down the wooden gable ends of my house.
Was easy to hold and handle at such a height!
Didn’t get 5 stars because seems a bit tight only getting 1 pad with it!
Only thing, is it turns off at times when in a certain restricted area
Easy to handle and easy to use. What more do you need.
Good sander, certainly reduces the amount of dust when used indoors.
I just spent a couple of hours with it sanding pallets and was really impressed. Powerful, quiet and easy to use.
Brilliant price, needed it for some last minute sanding. Also got a job lot of sanding pads from Amazon, exactly what I needed.
Great little sander, saves loads of time over hand sanding.
Can recommend it, needed to buy another attachment to fit it to extraction though.
Only down fall is it comes with one sanding paper.
I used this to strip paint from a metal garage door by way of paint stripper to get the process going and then the sander to remove more of the paint.
It does work but it is a slow and methidical process. I could only use the sander for about 1 hour as the vibrations do affect your hand but it is only temporary. Downside is that the sanding discs which are an additional requirement need changed frequently – after every 30 minutes of use so I used 15 in total for this job however they are relatively cheap to buy. Due to it design – you cant use it to get into corners.
Despite the above – it did the job and I would never have done the job without i

Well balanced, and easy to use, dust collection works great… & when registered comes with a 3 year warranty…
I love this machine! I have completed so many jobs with it, I can’t imagine having to upcycle furniture without it.
Powerfull, easy to use, dust collector is a bonus. Great value for the money spent.
Bought for husband’s birthday and he has completed sanding 3 benches in a month. He is not a natural DIYer. This sander is so easy to use and the benches look amazing! Highly recommended.
Worth every penny!
I hate sanding and this helps me to a whole wall in a minute or 2.
Very gentle vibration and easy to manoeuvre so it doesn’t hurt your wrist at all and easy to get a nice smooth effect.
Good product, had to get the swing of it at first but after that i was good although it has a dust capture thing on the back that doesn’t really catch hard dust.. just make sure you slap that grit sheet on firmly or it will go flying across the room.
First off its a breeze to use. The velcro sanding discs are easy to change (watch that you line the holes up for dust extraction though) and its easy to hold and manoeuvre. Whilst not the highest wattage its fine for general DIY work for small to medium jobs. Now the bad bit. You don’t get much int he box, just the sander, a disc (yes just one) and the proprietary dust collector. There is no variable speed and no connection piece for a workshop vac or other external dust collection which does mean you will get some dust flying into the air that could be avoided easily. Only having one disc in the box seems mean too for the price point when cheaper makes often give you 10 or more. The dust extraction is a big deal given how much we all know about dust being a bad thing for general health especially if sanding to fine particle sizes. Register it online and you get a better warranty with bosch though. Its a nice unit and it works well.
Good quality product from a superior brand. Just what I expected, easy to use and get the sanding disks fo
This sander is brilliant. Strong and solid yet pretty compact. As for the vacuum function it makes considerable less dust than my chisel. Would highly recommend.
This is my second Bosch orbit sander, still got the old one (slightly larger).
It ended up being better value to buy this on offer than replacing the sanding disc holder!
I live in a Victorian house and have a lot of painted wood to sand, this does the trick quickly and efficiently.
My only gripe is I’d rather see a hoover attachment supplied than the dust catcher.
Once used to it it works realky well. Youtube vid showed me the correct technique and bingo!
The dust colkector is very good and requires regular emptying to work properly.
Very useful tool.
Did completely sand an oak floor in two rooms and would not of been able to do it without this sander, great bit of ki
Felt it could be more powerfull, but, does a good job and is greatly reduced from last year ….so grab yourself a bargain.
Even though this is sold as a hobby rated product I used this to sand a parquet round table top that had been badly damaged without any problems. The dust extractor worked well and is easy to empty. The sander is able to get into small/tight area and is easy and comfortable to use for prolonged periods. Definitely recommend this sander.
This is the first time i have bought one of these sanders, don’t know how i managed before with out it, light to use and cuts through old paint work well.
220W is way at the bottom of the scale for power.
Only comes with 1 sanding disc, no port for dust extraction connection.
You have to buy an adapter for that which costs about half the price of the unit.
Easy to use. Ideal for flat surfaces rather than corners or edges. Great on wood, less so on plaster finishes.
Excellent product for its price. Surprisingly quieter running than most and easy to use. Delivery was super fast. Quality brand for the price paid and well worth the little extra in the long term over cheaper products. If it is as good as my Bosch drill I have abused over the last 10 or so years ( still going strong ) then I will be more than happy.
Just brilliant, buy one, but buy sanding sheets from Amazon, much cheaper than Bosch and just as good.
Does what it says on the box.Shame it doesn’t come with carry case .
In a word ‘Brilliant’. Never used anything like this before and am well impressed. Would definitely recommend.
I purchased this to sand down a small table top made from old recycled timber, I started off with 40 grade and worked up to 180 grade and it did the job admirably. Some people said the dust collector was not adequate but if you empty it regularly it’s fine, I am more than pleased and if it lasts as long as my old Bosch sander which is over 40 years and still working I will be very happy (and very old)/.
I’ll let you know when hubby finally get around to doing the job it was bought for
Check back in two years approx
It’s been amazing to use on my up cycling projects
Great little sander. Compact size.
Easy to use.
Happy with it.
Easy to use and does what it says on the tin!
Great little machine. Just used it to sand down our 2.51.5m live edge dining table which needs a lot of care when dealing. Having purchased 60, 80, 120 and 240 grit discs, using and changing with the velco system was a breeze. The dust capture system worked well but empty often. Of course some fine dust makes it through but prepare for that, it is a sander after all
I finally got thoroughly fed up struggling with my old orbital sander so took the plunge and bought this.
What a revelation?!
It is so much better – in fact you have to careful not to go too far with it.
My first job was rubbing down paint on a door jamb ready to repaint.
In no time I was through to the bare wood!
It has easy to change Velcro fitting sanding discs and a small dust collector attached to the end.
The collector works surprisingly well, and is easy to clean it out.
It’s not cheap, but it is good value for money as it will last years I’m sure; it is clearly well made.
Very good product, only minor gripe being the dust collection isn’t particularly good.
More powerful than I expected. Had a door sanded and ready to paint in 10 mins using 2 grades of sanding sheets.
Sanding sheets are easy to attach / detach quickly. Despite having a dust box you still get a lot of dust around the place (something to keep in mind)
Can’t go wrong with Bosch products, I have several. So far I have only used this for preparing skirting boards for re-painting, and that worked well. Next job planned is to prepare an old garden bench for re-treating. The tool is easy to use, quite light, and the dust bag works well too, and is easy to empty.
Having read numerous reviews prior to purchase I was not left disappointed as the sander performs to the high expectations that I had
I use this for sanding guitar bodies – excellent device and it’s pretty good at collecting the sawdust too
I’ve used this a few times now and with the right sanding paper it does a good job. I think it’s important to press only lightly but I’ve been pleased with it. Also very little dust has escaped the collection box which is an added benefit. I’m sure there are better sanders available at a higher price but for light domestic use I think it’s very good.
I was planning on buying an orbital sander for three times the price of this and I’m glad I took a chance and brought this on amazon deal of the day for 30. I’m really impressed with how well this works it makes short work of anything I’ve used it on, don’t waste your time with sheet sanders etc an orbital sander is a great buy.
I have used a number of sanders over the years and have found that the Bosch PEX 220 orbital sander best suits my needs. This purchase is a replacement for my old PEX 220, which I used for many years.
Its an orbital sander. Collects a lot of dust that would of jettisoned into my workshop. A lot but not all.
I need to empty it about every 10 minutes, as i have no extraction fan yet.
Works well.
Used this for sanding some plaster and it’s excellent. The motion feels very natural and it gives a good finish. My only criticism is that the vacuum isn’t adequate for fine sanding such as plaster work and maybe the power cord could be a bit longer so that you can reach a ceiling from a plug socket, but all in all a great sander.
So far, brilliant. Dust trap difficult to get off and on. Shame only one sanding disk comes with it.
Excellent sander for general DIY and takes the hard work out of sanding woodwork and walls for finishing, a real timesaver….
This is a high quality product , from a very well known German Brand. I will review it step by step to make it clear if it will be useful for you or not.
Origin: 5/5, I like the fact that it’s not a chinese made product but it’s made in Hungary. To be honest, I can understand that for this price range, it is very difficult for companies to manufacture in UK or Germany for example, so I think Hungary is a fair choice as opposed to other brands that manufacture in China.
Quality : 5/5 , it is very rigid and made using high quality materials. Holding it, it is very Hefty and solid. It also has a rubberized grip which I liked. Trust the quality.
Price: 5/5 , I got it for a very good price because it had an extra price discount. No scam here, it is worth more than what I paid.
Usability : 4/5, the reason I gave this a 4 is because it doesn’t have a speed control. So you always have to work with full throttle. I tried to first use it for a small block of wood. It ended up sanding alot of the wood. So I would only recommend this for big flat surfaces.
Extras: 5/5, I like the fact that it has a vaccum port , which can suck alot of the dust ( Too much dust is not good for your respiratory system ). But make sure you buy the sanding sheets with the holes to take full advantage of this feature.
Overall : I think if you could spend a bit more for the more advanced sander from Bosch, then it would be better in many aspects. Unless you need it for big flat surface only, then you’re good to go with this. This is the only reason I removed 1 star. ****

It was good quality and a good price with fast delivery
just what I wanted its electric, my air one took up to much air for my compressor also its lighter too.
Works really well. I used it to sand down a kitchen table before revarnishing and to sand down a garage door before repainting. It cut in so quickly on both jobs. The last time I sanded the table I did it by hand and it took me two back-breaking days. I had it all ready to revarnish with this sander in just over an hour. If I never use it again, it was worth it just for this job. But it seems quite robust so I imagine I will use it again and again.
very good but fine dust still gets everywhere extractor jus average
frantastic sander never had a orbit sander before used on kitchen doors 1st class job when using ALDI discs
Brilliant, light and nimble. Good for light to medium sanding. Comes with 1 sanding pad so will need to buy more. Collects some of the dus
The filter is amazing, unfortunately I have not been able to find a filter replacement, so cleaning is messy.
But the Sander is fantastic and easy to use
This is a great sander at a great price. I bought this as I had been looking for this type of sander for a while. I had looked at reviews and prices and this fit the bill perfectly. I needed this to sand down a ceramic/fibreglass fix on bath and an old desk and it did a great job on both. It is easy to use highly recommend.
Very good tool. Had never used one before but found it easy to set up and use.
Best sander I ever owned. Huge upgrade on the detail sander I used beforehand.
Doesn’t have variable speeds but it’s more than good enough for your average DIYer.
Comfortable and easy to use.
It started great but seems to be lacking power now..
great price of equipment i always have Bosch tools as they can take a lot of punishment , i am using this to de varnish and strip paint from a 42 ft boat and it eats through no issues , dust collector ok but I buy bosh for the power and reliability
I read all of the reviews and decided to buy this sander. It worked perfectly on my kitchen doors and left an excellent finish for painting.
Bought it as a replacement for my heavy sander my son must like it he hasnt given it back yet, that reminds me…..
USED THIS TODAY FOR THE FIRST TIME AND I’M ABSOLUTELY MADE UP WITH IT! REALLY EASY TO SEDIDN’T EVEN NEED TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!
A great addition to the toolbox. Has so far performed well. Can recommend as a good buy.
Comfortable in the hand, small enough to get into tight spots, does a great job.
Typical Bosch build quality.
Great.
Used it today absolutely love it easily controllable leaves a excellent finnish no wrist strain or arm ache
I was a little wary of buying this sander due to some of the other reviews people have given on Amazon but thought for the price I would give it a go. As per usual my review is split into a quick short review and a longer detailed version:
Short Review
PROS
– Reasonably Priced
– Standard 125mm size – so easy to get replacement abrasives that don’t have to be Bosch
– Surprisingly Powerful
– Easy to Control with one hand
– Dust Collection is more or less a pro
– Solid build quality – had stood up to a bit of abuse
CONS
– No soft start – this is a minor thing and not expected at this price point
– No case / bag – again not really expecting one at this price
– No speed controls – would have been nice and would only have cost pence to add a speed controller to it
Detailed Review
As I said above I wasn’t expecting much with this sander given it has received it’s fair share of negative reviews on here but given it was from Bosch a brand a normally trust and it was cheap enough especially compared to other big brand sanders I decided to roll the dice on it.
I have used it daily in my workshop for the past two months now and I have had no problems with it. I am not one of these people that spends more time cleaning their tools than using them so as a result it’s already had a tough life of abuse in my shop from getting trailed around by it’s lead / cord to this 18 stone gorilla bearing down on it plus it’s easily been dropped from the bench onto the floor half a dozen times and it’s powered on without any problems.
I thought that it might be a bit under powered at 220w but I was pleasantly surprised at it’s power and whilst it is easy for me to control with one firm hand it does take a bit of pressure to keep it under control. It performs very well on a wide range of hardwoods I work with such as Walnut, Cherry and Oak and assuming you use decent abrasive discs ie. not the cheapest ones you can find and know how to sand properly which I know you do then it really does perform very well.
I am more of a Makita than a Bosch man but given the price of this unit compared to a similar spec’ed Makita model it was less than half the price and apart from perhaps a soft bag / case and a speed controller I fail even as a die hard Makita fan to see where the difference in performance would be. I suppose time will tell as to how long it will live for but given the abuse it’s received to date without missing a beat the odds are looking good however I will adjust this review if it does die a premature death so if you are reading this then it’s still going strong.
The dust collection isn’t bad… it’s not brilliant either but it works and the little container / filter is easy enough and quick enough to empty.
Granted most orbital sanders are 125mm size which is pretty much standard so makes it easy enough to buy replacement discs pretty much anywhere including the dreaded B&Q if in a pinch.
Yes it would of been nice to have a hoover attachment (which is sold separately), a bag / case but neither were expected given the price but the lack of a speed controller switch which would have cost Bosch literally pence to include did feel a bit mean but I suppose the cost savings have to show somewhere.
Not really sure why other reviewers have had bad experiences with their sanders… perhaps a bad batch or maybe too heavy handed.. I don’t know but as far as my experience goes I would recommend it.
Small enough to be used when working off a ladder but it gives excellent results, didn’t use the dust collector so can’t comment on that.
Small and efficient. More suited to completely flat surfaces. Do not buy if you want to sand intricate areas such as window frames or mouldings/
What a simple orbital sander but fantastic and high quality at the same time not to mention great price. Operates with a single on off switch on the top front of the sander.
I bought this to replace my old multi purpose sander and I am so glad I did, as I knew what I was getting with the Bosch brand, but you have no idea until you actually use it how good it is going to be.
My only piece of advice I would give is if you plan to use this for a long time, I would wear gloves, even better if you can afford shock proof gloves as the vibrations that go through your hand and arm by using this for a long time can be a little annoying. That said, all sanders have this issue because of the high vibrations that happens. I wear gloves and it also makes the grip a little easier too, and can do the job in one go without any issues.
Overall, this is one of the best sanders I have used and used quite a few in my life, all brands from high end professional to basic. This I would rank in the middle of the semi pro range. For the value however you will find it very hard to beat it. That is why I give this 5 stars, and would give 6 if it were possible.
Another quality Bosch product. Works really well and surprisingly the dust collector also work well although it needs emptying regularly.
Used with stock Bosch sanding pads and 3rd party ones and both worked just as well as one another.
Recommended.
Work perfectly as describe. Very easy to use for the beginner. However it does not capture all dust as it might impossible to do so. Overall is ok
I always look for and want a Ronseal deal does what it says on the Tin…You can’t get better than that and that’s what i got cheers
Great item for the price, difficult to do a good job but not impossible.
I really like this sander and would highly recommend. I just wish it had changeable speeds
Works great, although its still dusty with the dust bag attached but not too bad. Makes light work of sanding though so still 5 stars
Unbeatable. I make guitars as a hobby and do a lot of scraping and fine sanding. A friend told me about this and I admit I was skeptical, but the random motion truly reduces the scratch pattern. At 240 grit the finish is finer than a much higher grit hand sand. Larger grits are also very useful for flatting even quite big surfaces. I recommend getting the adapter to connect to a shop vac or other extractor.
Never used this type of sander before and when I first used it I couldn’t believe how good it was compared to my previous sander (which I always thought was good anyway, before I burnt it out sanding back a floor). If this sander lasts as long as my previous one and carries on doing the job that it has initially done then I will be more than satisfied. Initial thoughts about this sander is that it is a good buy and well worth the money
Easy to use but grip is slightly difficult. If the head were extended over the dust bag it would make it more comfortable to use.
Very comfortable to hold and effective sander, dustbag a little difficult to fit but is effective. VERY happy with this sander.
Excellent purchase; good value. I used it to strip a sideboard and it made the job so easy. Collects a decent proportion of the dust, although not all of it; remember to empty the bag regularly! Quieter than my old sander. Clean with a vacuum cleaner nozel during extended use to reduce dust dispersal. Highly recommended!
A decent sander for the price, it’s had plenty of use and I find it fairly quiet and vibration free.
So far, very happy with the sander and the quality that it is capable of. Some suggest that it is underpowered but I feel that this is due to a misunderstanding of how the orbital sanding system actually works. I have found no problem with this sander and it does a good job. One negative is that the sander is supplied with only one sanding disk: it seems a little mean! One of each grit – fine, medium, coarse – would have been helpful.
Great orbital sander. Bought mine to finish a wood work surface and have used on other similar jobs with good results. The key feature is the figure of 8 motion which helps avoid the repetitive circular sanding marks. Downside is that it comes with a dust catcher on the back but it’s not infallible and some dust escapes but I have yet to find a tool that has ever managed to extract all the dust!
From an amateur woodworker point view this is a very good sander, easy to use. If you use the right pads you won’t be disappointed.
Very good sander, buy a belt sander for rough large work but for smaller jobs especially on smaller sizes ie. skirting this is the sander, you can get far cheaper ones but don’t expect them to last or do as good a job. Easy to empty filter and easy change sanding discs.
