What is a thermal image?

A thermal image shows the distribution of temperatures within a measuring range. Each pixel contains information about a temperature point. The GTC 400 C has a thermal resolution of 160×120 px and provides a thermal image with 19,200 measuring points

How do I connect to a mobile device?

The device connects via a built-in Wi-Fi module, which enables a connection between the GTC 400 C and the Bosch Thermal App. An individual security key is required the first time, which will be displayed on the tool while Wi-Fi is switched on.

Can I use GTC 400 C to measure body temperature?

No, the GTC 400 C is not suitable for the measurement of human body temperature due to its accuracy.

Can I measure temperature of liquids?

A thermal imager can only measure surface temperatures. Therefore, it is not recommended to use the device to measure the temperature of liquids. However, the GIS 1000 C can be used with a specific external sensor (K-type).

How can I get the best, most reliable results?

Select the correct material and adjust the emissivity value plus reflected temperature for more accurate results. For highly reflective surfaces, add black matte tape and measure on this non-reflective area.

Purchased to help review some home heat loss issues and also to trace underfloor heating. Was not disappointed, works straight out of the box and is very intuitive. The picture quality is very good and love the normal light picture overlay features – further helps identify landmarks in the thermal image

Would thoroughly recommend if in market for a rugged and usable thermal camera.

Great build quality (solid) and fast turn on and reading of temps, the camera quality and overlay was good but not as good as the flir c5 which I ended up keeping and returning this one. My use was home DIY. The bosch was more professional tool for trademens and the app can send reports from the phone or the app.

It’s tell you minimum and maximum temp as also where you are pointing to.

You don’t have the ability to do software updates, so no new features or bug fixes but you do get calibration certificate and it also it does self calibrate.

In the plus point the battery can be used with other bosch professional products which I had a few off.

There is a newer model with more data point to measure temps.

Easy to use, even for someone like me with no experience. Just turn it on and it works, easy to adjust the hot and cold temps so the colour range displays how you want it too. Nice little compact unit.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSo far the camera is paying for itself finding issues otherwise not identified. The pictures show a loose cable connection. The front cable was tight however the linking cable was not and could easily have been missed. The second shows a hot spot in pipework that turned out to be a loose bolt dragged into the water flow. The money saved in finding the faults before catastrophic developments appeared is well worth the layout costs.

Picks out hotspots very easily and accurately

A calibrated, precise, specialist tool with a great many varied applications, vastly more once you own and use the unit than I previously imagined. I had a great deal of pleasure surveying both the exterior and interior of my house. I was very pleased to see that there was no evident of heat loss from the walls or roof and minimal waste from windows even though the outside temp was -3c. I toured the inside of the house searching for cold spots and draughs, which have since been rectified. Then moved on to examine the surfaces and doors on our ovens while operating which were very well insulated. The detail and variety of viewing modes makes this thermal camera suited to a very wide range of applications, such as heating/cooling and electrical systems defect detection or verification even spotting wildlife in pitch darkness!. The accompanying software package is available to download from the support website, although it has limited appeal to me, it is offers a great way to structure a professional looking package for clients if that is your intended use for the camera. I like this camera and would recommend it it anybody thinking of which one to opt for.

    Excellent tool.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersIncredibly useful tool.
Bought primarily to check underfloor heating all functioning correctly and it does a perfect job showing all the pipe runs for wet UFH.
I’ve added a few photos and a video to show it in action.
You can pair via WiFi to smartphone and download images into Bosch measuring app, there’s a dedicated thermal imaging app coming in a few months.
Once in the app you can adjust opacity of thermal image over real image, annotate and output to camera roll or as a PDF report.

I also used it to find out why my dog was limping, could see a hot joint in his front legs which let me know where he had a swelling.

    Perfect for checking underfloor heating

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI am a DIY enthusiast and bought a 1930s house which we are slowly doing up while living in it. I needed to know where the central heating pipework is located and also find and resolve thermal inefficiencies in the house. Having looked at many other products and reviews, this one stood out for a number of reasons.

    1) Out of all the professional ranges of thermal imaging products available for under a grand, this Bosch GTC 400 seems to be the only one that is able to consistently see under carpets. The configurations allow you to tune colour sensitivity and this allows you to pick up the pips under the carpets with ease. Some of the standout pros are:

    2) The ability to overlay camera imaging with the thermal to show more detail in the thermal picture is a very nice feature and one that professionals would require.

    3) The battery life is great. I was using this for a few hours and very little drawdown

    4) the navigation functions are easy to use

Some things I found with the GTC 400 are:
    – I found several areas in my ceiling where there were clear insulation issues.
    – I found one of my exterior walls seems to have no insulation as I can see the outlines of the bricks in the walls as cold lines.
    – i found one of my floating floors had no insulation
    – i found my front door was full of leaks

overall it is an expensive gadget to have but one that will make any homeowner better informed for DIY decisions and also to troubleshoot problems where thermal imagine can highlight problem areas.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our Usersa number of very detailed reviews of this product already posted and I see no reason to repeat everything already stated.
However, in fairness to Bosch I can state that their Amazon description is detailed, helpful and correct and frankly a handheld unit with an accuracy tolerance of 3C over a range of -10C and +400C should be more than adequate for most purposes — anything requiring a greater degree of accuracy is really getting into the highly technical area and thus costing considerably more.
My son has just moved into an old cottage and this unit has proven to be an excellent device in virtually every area of the cottage in determining the what — where — when & how of both heat loss and heat ‘hot-spots’ and/or ‘cold-spots’ including, in one case, an overloaded electrical cable which may have become very dangerous and even caused a fire eventually.
The use this item was put to at the cottage has inspired me to use it to check my own house and, as I have told other people about it, I already have a few more friends who want their houses checked which I am more than happy to help them do.
Professional installer/repairers will find this unit more than equal to their needs in almost all cases and will identify quickly ‘fault’ areas in electrical installations, windows, heating and even automotive situations.
Instructions and guidance on the Amazon site given by Bosch makes this item easy to use and the information output is also easy to read and understand — I quote – “EASILY TRANSFER DATA: Document measurements and quickly exchange data using the Measuring Master app or use the PC software to edit thermal images and create detailed reports”.
Please read the other reviews and a special thanks to reviewer Teresa for her photographic images and her cat for showing the use of the device for perhaps checking animals too — once you have this Bosch Thermal Camera you will find any number of uses for it.
I was supplied with this product free of charge for giving an honest review which I feel I have done.
If this feedback has helped in any way please be kind enough to click on ‘Helpful’ or ‘Comment’.
Thank you for reading my Feedback.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI needed this to prove to my landlord that something’s wrong with the seals around my window. For the last five years it’s been getting worse: when it rains water gathers on the inside so there’s always mould, and when it’s windy it’ll blow things like my blinds and posters around my room. Since it’s getting colder I needed to do something about it so I got this to prove where the issues are and wow am I pleased with how well this works. Having the ability to transfer it to my computer or instantly upload it to my phone is even better because I’m able to email them with clear results.

It turns out that the draft was coming in from several areas: the windows, the upper ceiling where the attic is, and especially the door (as in I could’ve been pointing at a fan with how much cold was coming in). It’s fairly disgusting so thankfully I was able to document the results on both my phone and computer. I’m not a trained thermographer but considering how well this worked for me, I’m going to use this in my neighbours place to see where the damp is coming from. Because there’s mould climbing up her walls and no matter how much she bleaches it and uses mould-proof paint, it always comes back and the place smells musty.

Personally I love this and it has many uses. I’m 24 years old and as stupid as it sounds, I also use this to take heat photos of my cat and I like using it as an alternative to night vision when I’m playing man-hunt with my friends (basically aggressive tag at night in the forest). So yeah, it’s an incredible device to use to seek out leaks, damp spots, and drafts- but it’s also fun to mess with. It measures temperature accurately and it’s amazing to see where the vulnerable spots in my flat are. I’m pretty certain there’s rats in my attic so I’m going to take this with me to see if I can see any parkouring invaders running about (it’s not a converted attic so it’s basically lumber, insulation, and the boiler up there).

Bosch makes reliable tools and there’s only potentially a +/- 3 error. I normally use simple tools and do novice work around my place and vehicles so by no means am I an expert. But this is easy to figure out and the camera is incredible. I never realised how badly insulated my flat is but it explains why I’m paying so much for electricity. I know the thermal tool is expensive but it comes with two batteries, it’s a high end product designed for professionals, and I know it’ll last me my entire life (like how my dad has owned his tools for 30+ years, including a Bosch drill that’s almost as old as me). Considering the resolution is 160 x 120px I’m impressed with how good it looks, both on the thermal camera and the uploaded picture.

It has so many uses and even a novice can benefit from i

This item is absolutely superb In every way possible! Pay the price and you get a great product 100%. This tool is very much needed in some professional trades and provides very useful, needed and accurate information with ease and simplicity.

You can gain all the information directly from the thermal camera, or hook it up onto your phone using the built in wifi connection to gain better and more in-depth details, charts and saveable images. Overall this item is very good, it’s definitely an item which is needed and is so much better then the cheaper ones on the market in so many ways! You definitely will love it! This amazon own kit is also an excellent price and comes complete with two batteries and is currently cheaper than the one battery model, so grab the offer while you can.

    BARGAIN!!!

    Worth a try for sure.

First off, the special edition available exclusively on Amazon looks excellent value – considering you get an extra battery pack and it actually costs 90 quid less. That said, this is still a considerable investment, so you will want to make sure that you can justify it. I would say that if you work in an industrial / commercial setting where downtime is expensive and prevention is the name of the game, this would be a good buy. For work in a domestic setting perhaps less so, but if providing evidence of the problem is part of your work remit, you will like this.

It is a massive step up from the thermal camera attachments you can get for your phone, and really does most of what you need. It mostly suffers compared to versions that cost ten grand plus, in not giving very accurate measurement. If you need better than 3 degree error rate then you will need to spend more. However this is really all about relative heat – spotting the area that is hotter than its surroundings (or cooler if you at looking for gaps in insulation). With both a camera and infra red sensor you can get detailed images in a variety of viewing modes. The thermal overlay mode which sits over a full colour image is really useful, but it is easy to switch modes to reveal what works for you.

The transfer to laptop via a wifi hotspot works well – and at speed. The app is good and professional reports can be put togther quickly. The battery life is good, but having a spare and options to use AA you are well covered. The design is robust – you would be unlucky to damage this in normal use.

Overall: if you are mostlty working in domestic settings and only make occassional use of themographics – then it would be hard to justify this. If you can justify the outlay – this is good value so long as you don’t need to work within fine temp tolerances. I suspect that once you use it a few times you will wonder haow you managed without it.

Golden Review Award: 24 From Our UsersSo, this is the Bosch GTC 400 C thermal imaging camera.
A thermal imaging camera produces a picture purely from the heat emissivity of an object. It then displays this heat temperature as a colour (colours are dependant on which scale you choose to use)
This camera has a thermal image sensor of 160 x 120.
This means that the display array has 19,200 pixels. The camera constantly measures the temperature of every single one of those pixels separately and then displays that pixel as a colour depending on its temperature.
As you can see in Photo 3 (which is an Echo Dot on the wall) the Dot is warmer than the rest of the surroundings, this consequently is displayed in red hot colours with the rest of the photo cooling to blue colours, depending on its temperature.

You can see 3 targets on the picture. The centre one doesn’t move and will always display the temperature of the centre pixel.
The red target will move to the hottest pixel in the picture and will display that temperature.
The blue target will move to the coolest pixel in the picture and will display its temperature.
In Automatic mode there are 4 separate spectrums to choose from.
A standard rainbow spectrum, 2 other colour spectrums and a grey scale, where cold is black and hot is white (Photo 2-3).

There are 4 ways of viewing the Image.
    1) A combination of ordinary digital picture and thermal Image.
    2) Thermal Image only.
    3) Thermal image in the centre of the screen, with the digital image as the border.
    4) As 3, but the thermal image is smaller.

There is a manual mode, in which you can change the hot and cold limits, to determine what will show up thermally.

Where the Bosch really stands out is with its Hot mode and Cold mode.
In Hot mode, you can change the temperature so that only objects above a certain temperature appear thermally (Photo 4). This is incredibly useful for identifying things such as electrical faults or hot water pipes.
The Cold mode works the same, only you set the cold temperature. As you can see in Photo 1, there is a leak around the seal of my front door.

There is a trigger on the front of the camera which you press to freeze the image. You can then record this as a photo, or another squeeze will release the image.
Photos are taken by pressing a dedicated button on the back of the camera.

The camera has its own built in WiFi hot-spot, so once you have downloaded the Bosch Master Measuring app to your phone, you can port them across seamlessly.
You can also download to your PC via the supplied USB cable.
The software is great, with many options to alter the images. I suggest you look on the Bosch website for full details.

The camera itself is very well made. The main body being covered in a rubberized shell, protecting it to IP53 standard.
It has a built in lens cover on the front.

When you compare this camera to the Flir and Fluke offerings that are even close to this price, there is really no contest.
The sensor size and the different modes on the Bosch have it winning in every department.

If you think a thermal camera may be useful to you, I can thoroughly recommend the Bosch HTC 400 C.

I hope you found this review helpful.

A fantastic thermal imaging camera. For the money and features, it can't be beaten.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a professional infra red camera that also provides temperature information. It arrives with everything you need in a sturdy carry case and exhibits the usual Bosch Professional quality.

It provides a realtime infra red image on a small screen and provides temperature information for certain high and low points on the image along with a colour coded scale which calibrates based on the temperature in the image.

First test was temp accuracy. I got some water boiling well on the hob and mixed some more water with ice in a bowl. Initially the temp was well off but I realised the sensor was covered in condensation. I cleaned it off and it read 0 and 100 to within +/- 1 degree accuracy. The numbers continually fluctuate but held within the 2 degree range.

Next I set out to test it’s intended uses. These seem to be highlighting the quality of seals around windows, checking hidden hot water pipework (underfloor heating) and highlighting electrical faults in circuits. For general insulation leakage images it was great, shows where you are losing heat from the house and highlights where additional insulation is needed. I could see this being great for window fitters and loft insulators. The best feature is electrical safety. Within a couple of minutes it highlighted a dangerous light fitting in my parents house and would be perfect for electrical safety testers to see wiring connection issues. For this feature alone it is worth the high price and access to this type of testing could stop many electrical fires. It’s a 5 star device I just hope over the next few years the price comes down and this type of testing can become commonplace.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersI’m a tower crane engineer and quite often have to head to a building site to face an electrical fault with the crane being left out of action, this would be like the main oven of a busy restaurant giving up during a busy service.
so I need to have tools that can get me out of trouble fast.
Just before I broke up for Christmas I had this happen. I climbed the crane and was faced with many possibilities of what could be the issue, the Bosch Professional Thermal Imaging Camera GTC 400 C almost instantly got me out of trouble. I found a heat build up on a few loose terminals. I could have been there hours wasting my time looking for a broken part.
Its a large initial outlay of money but now would not be without it.
The box is very nice and sturdy also stackable if you have any other Bosch box’s of the same model. The charge lasts plenty of time. The screen gives you a very fast read out of the temperature of what your pointing at then another two cursers are hovering around finding the hottest and coldest part of the area as shown in my final picture. I have tested the thermometer and found it to be extremely accurate, much more accurate than I will ever need.
I have recommended this tool to a few of my colleagues and after taking it to the workshop they all loved it.
I hope this review helps you with your purchase.

    Absolute amazing piece of kit.

I’ve handled a lot of the cameras in the FLIR range and the GTC 400 C holds its own against them in my opinion. I’m particularly impressed with the screen – it seems to be bigger than a lot of other thermal camera screens and it’s easy to see the image on the screen, even outside.

In the box (an L-BOXX, if you have other compatible tools) was a hand strap, a USB cable, a battery with an external charger and the camera itself. Also included was a calibration certificate. There’s lots of space in the box for a second battery, or the optional AA battery adapter.

Connecting to the app is a bit of a pain – you have to turn the camera’s WiFi on and then connect to its WiFi using your phone – but once connected it’s easy to download your images.

I’m particularly impressed with the hot/cold spot finder. The camera will display a visible-light image on the screen and overlay it with either red or blue, allowing you to easily identify things like draught sources or inefficient glazing.

I’ve found the camera sensitive enough to locate warm heating pipes under carpets and behind some walls in a cold house with the heating turned on. It makes it really easy to identify gaps in plaster walls that could use some caulk and identify under-performing radiators. For general building works I’ve not found a job it won’t do.

Very impressive thermal tool for general building tasks.

Ingot this working straight out of the box. Switch to on, flip the infrared shield off and you are literally ready to go. The controls are easy – with a clear, bright and relatively large screen allowing for various options. You can switch between cold and heat mode or auto/manual settings, take pictures and send any results by wifi to an external PC or laptop. There are also several customisable choices including type of surface – concrete, wood, tile etc. Results were excellent to visualise underfloor heating through wood and to check for gaps in insulation in the roof. Highly recommended and solidly built. Comes in a very large case BTW.

This is one impressive piece of kit. In short, it’s a thermal imaging camera, with wi-fi compatibility as well as lead-based download/connection.

The screen is approximately 7cm x 6cm, on a gun which, with the included battery attached into the handle, holds roughly as the size of a trowel. The camera has a fold up protector over the lens. There’s a battery charger included, leads, and a well written, clear and concise instruction manual. I’m a newcomer to thermal imaging, and I found it easy to understand – and appreciated the way it elaborated, comparing functions so as to help me better understand how different settings can aid (and inspire) different jobs.

There are so many functions on this: thermal range monitoring is automatic, assigning colours: blue for cold, up through red to yellow and white for hot, hotter, hottest; and cross-hairs pinpoint the centre of each heat source in view. Otherwise, there are all sorts of settings: there’s scaling (for greater or smaller work areas). ‘Manual’ allows specific heat ranges to be sourced, but equally, the camera can be set to pick out only the hottest, or coldest areas. Emissivity can be measured, isolating the hottest source in view – but also ‘reflected temperatures’ can be read. Audio signals are also an option. Honestly, this baby has been designed to help in every which way. Very clever – and simple!

Images and sequences can be saved inside the camera – and/or transferred in realtime via wi-fi to a computer (or phone). Date/time can be set and assigned. And a clever feature is the ability to overlay a transparency of a thermal image over its real life view – enabling clearer assessment of emissivity. There are a lot of alternatives in the menu, allowing for stills to be cropped and thrown up on the screen at the same time as a thermal image – whatever works the for the viewer. And while the thermal range is automatic, a desired thermal range can be set, allowing for a specific temperature band to be isolated. Given the range (of up to 5 metres), the camera will also throw up measurements between heat sources in view…. which is darned useful.

All of this comes in a well padded heavy-plastic case, complete with multiple clips and a carry handle. All in, this is absolutely brilliant.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersBosch Professional tools are usually very impressive and this compact unit is certainly among the best. There’s a lot to learn and try out, but I’ve only had it two days and am going on holiday tomorrow for two weeks, so have had little time with it.

It comes in an over-sized case c. 44 x 36 x 14 cms, allowing plenty of space for spare battery packs, etc. It’s a Bosch L-BOXX 136, designed to stack and interlock with other L-BOXX cases, so is very welcome. See photos I’ve uploaded.

The wrist strap is useful but the optional camera pouch really should have been included as standard. It also seems a little mean that neither the AA battery adapter nor a second Li-ion pack comes with it, although you may of course have batteries from other Bosch Pro tools. That’s about all I can find to complain about though.

The key features, at least for me, are probably:
    * Robust, IP53-rated camera with 5″ colour display (recessed for protection)
    * Infrared sensor resolution 160120 pixels
    * Intuitive interface and controls (it really is)
    * Quick and easy visualisation and analysis of temperature differences
    * Easy to switch between heat and cold detection
    * Micro USB port for data transfer, wi-fi for transfer to the Bosch Measuring Master app

The wi-fi works by having the tool create its own wi-fi hotspot and displaying the key. You have to connect your phone/tablet to that hotspot. I’ve yet to work out how Bluetooth works on this — perhaps it requires an extra accessory? There’s no sign of it in Settings.

My use will be mainly with property, but electricians would find it valuable for fault-finding. It’s hanging on to its first charge very well. Various viewing modes are available. With thermal overlay, the camera gives a clear image while the infrared sensor overlays thermal information. At least, I think that’s the way it works. Very useful.

Options for customisation, and general capabilities, are wide-ranging. For example, the default temperature ranges can be fine-tuned, to allow you to focus on specific temperatures. You can squeeze the trigger to freeze an image, allowing you to inspect or share it. You can also save images and transfer them over USB or wi-fi. The Bosch Measuring Master app seems very capable, but I haven’t had time to evaluate it yet.

My only disappointment is that the picture in the Amazon listing suggesting you can see the location of underfloor heating pipes seems a bit far-fetched. They’re typically buried a couple of inches down, in concrete. Mine certainly are. The concrete spreads the heat and produces a consistent overall temperature on the surface, so the individual pipes are visible.

My assessment so farthe GTC 400 C is an expensive tool but you could pay a lot more. You might get extra features, perhaps a higher level of temperature accuracy, but the Bosch will do all most people need, and more. You could also pay less, but my feeling is that the GTC 400 C is a near-perfect compromise for most users.

That’s all, for now, except to suggest taking a look at the Bosch website for further details. Amazon won’t let me include a link but I’ll try and add one in a comment.

A pleasure to use and reasonably priced

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy father is so thankful for this ! He is a plumber by trade and a couple months back his Bosch one actually died after 6 years ! He’s been using a temp 50 one which isn’t ideal but then he didn’t have the spare money for such a good one again. When this popped up on vine it was amazing and I told him right away… when it arrived I took it straight over to him to test. He said it’s wicked and is so high tech and powerful. He likes that you can view everything in app as well as directly though the device, the battery is very good as would last easily for a couple of jobs. Quick charging too so wouldn’t be a Major deal if you forgot to charge and you have to do it on site. As with all Bosch tools it’s comes neatly boxed it a sturdy box and comes complete with all accessories and manuals needed. Great item ! Life saver…

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersBought this to check the thermal hot/cold spots in the flat – esp near windows and also to check if the radiators work as expected. If you’re not a professional tradesperson it’s a bit confusing to start with because the instruction booklet that comes in the box has around 2 pages of instructions only (in English) which discusses how to charge and who shouldn’t try to use the tool etc (I.e. that someone with certain physical or mental disabilities shouldn’t use it) so it doesn’t have a very good guide of how to use/ where to use, etc. That said, there is information online to cover for that lack of info in the booklet. I find this a very useful tool
