Wow great device most important feature is a light (associated with the sound, the light gets brighter or dimmer based on if you are on the circuit or not) on the tracer! Who knew, How it works is: you connect a NON POWERED wire to the red clip. Then the black clip to A GROUND! NOT A NEUTRAL GROUND FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE HOUSE. Then turn sound down touch probe look at the light if you turn the sound up the light gets really bright, move the probe away and the sound and light get duller or off. Then move the probe to the insulated wire the light will be lit but as bright as testing on the clip. Then turn sound up one more click then test the probe in the wall or where ever you are looking such as another outlet or circuit at the box REMEMBER THE POWER IS OFF! If the light starts getting very bright and the sound is high that will be your wire. I traced two circuits going into one outlet and fixed my issues (blown 100 amp main breaker) could not have solved my issue without this unit and the tip above…. I also put a 1/8″ male jack adapter into the headphone jack to get rid of the sound…
I started out trying to trace ethernet cables with the VDV500-123 and the Klein Lan Scout Jr 2. This worked ok as long as you could touch the cable with the tip of the probe but didn’t work through walls or even wall plates. I tested the output of the Lan Scout and it was only about 1.18V into a 10kohm resistor, or about -8.5dBm of power. The Klein VDV500-705 says it puts out +8.5dBm for toning, so I hooked an audio signal generator to my ethernet cable running at 1kHz and 7 volts, or about 7dBm. This let me detect a cable with the VDV500-123 out to around 6-12″. It would go through walls with no problem. This let me trace my wires all over my house. The only problem I ran into was that wires that were bundled together for long distances would couple the tone signal from one into other ones. Once I found all of the points the wires ended at, I could still tell the difference between them though.
I have upgraded to fibre and needed as a consequence to reroute ethernet cables and refit the RJ45 plugs. I had big trouble doing that as did two electricians that were not very competent. I bought the probe VDV500 123 and that identified those cabels that has diagonals well when working with the Klein LAN scout Jr 2 unit that emits signals and checks the integrity of the one. I would not have been able to do it without these. I also invested in a Knipex RJ45 RJ45 crimping tool and bought a bunch of RJ45 CAT6 open through hole type connectors that allowed me to chat the wire colours before crimping. With that lot I was in good shape and could lookmafter my setup without needing outside help which is expensive to find and get on site a technician that does the job quickly. I shall be fitting many RJ45 lines for media and security including cameras so it is worth the investment in my case. If you just want to do one off then frankly you have a problem of investment.
The best cable tracer I have bought. I bought it as a replacement and I have had a few over the years well ok decades. This is the best kit I have used. it picks up signals very accurately when used properly. Brilliant product.
Good bit of kit – works well. Have docked them a point for shipping it in a nasty blister pack, though.
This is a quality unit. It has paid for it self after first use.
This tool made renovation electrical modifications simple and straightforward. The tool is easy to use and you can pinpoint the individual run of cable.
Really is a great bit of kit. Works with a variety of Klein tools testers too.
Sturdy and strong feel solid durable that’s how I like all my tools
This is a decent bit of kit for the price. It’s well built and is very easy to use. I would recommend it.
Le cuesta trabajo reconocer tonos en cable blindado. Aunque eso tambin ayuda a identificar clidad del cable. Pero muy funcional para la identificacin de cables
Turned out to be very good quality, definitely value for money
Every Klein tool I’ve ever purchased has stood the test of time. Always the right tool for the job.
Great value for the price and great tool to find the problem if you know how to work it.
Used this to rewire an entire houses electrical system. It helped me find wires that may have seemed they were going in one direction, but actually ended up someone else.
It also helped me relocated our phone lines that provide the internet for the house.. Without this, I would have had to tear down more sheet rock to trace certain wires, but some of wires? Were so mixed up I had no choice but to still rip down the wall, or ceiling. It’s not 100% accurate, but it’ll definitely help with your project.
This is an AWESOME tool… I wish I had bought this years ago. Saves a lot of time… the YouTube videos are accurate and the product is very easy to use.
It makes noise that with a wand tou csn pretend your job is more important then it is.. woot. Beep beep beep or beeeeeeeeeep yay
I had ethernet installed into a home and the installers looped a ethernet cable so it had no end go into a room where all the cables met so there was alot of ethernet cables about 15 different cables I was plugging in and out ethernet into all of the ends cause the customer wanted internet to go into a specific room found out that the cable we were looking for was up further into the wall and it was looped it had no end and I couldn’t find the end so I ended up cutting the cable in half to get it to reach the room just barely and now there is a dead cord that goes to nothing in the walls that I can’t even get out but this solved the problem for that person. Also if anyone is wondering no you can’t wave it against tge wall like some stud finder you have to have full contact or about 1 cm away from cable to hear anything and by full contact it can touch the shielded cable jacket and still buzz however if it was naked copper it is louder about 5x louder but it’s still good and loud without bare copper. I can’t see much use for this if it’s not a fresh install maybe if you bought or it included a ethernet coupler so it can become a female end so when your at a data center and your trying to find a certain cable it will pick it up because you can’t tone thru an active data line cable. And the device is pretty straight forward you don’t need to read the instructions at all to use it. Only things you’d want to know later on after purchasing it it wishing you knew it does a certian feature cause you didn’t read the manual is the plastic toner tip is replaceable red on cont means it’s an active data line blinking red battery light means battery is dying. Other obscure infomation you might want to know but probably are buying solely for rj11 or rj12 or rj45 ethernet anyway is the electrical wire toning at the bottom of the handle there is a spot for positive and negative bare wire to plug into and their is button releases the two clip probs have spikes and have to touch bare copper and won’t read thru wirelessly at all like the ethernet toner does the clip prob spikes are tightening adjustable. Only things I would buy along side this purchase your deciding on may be a ethernet coupler since it comes with aaa batteries if your buying a used one I would add aaa batteries. Also if you think the beeping noise might upset those around you buy some 3.5mm jack headphones to go with em. As far as the price is concerned if the customer just bought this instead of hiring someone to do it for him he would of saved more money is technically dummy proof if your helping someone who is a firm believer that iPhone is better than Android then this tool would be easy to use for that person who may not be tech savvy.
Very happy with this toner set. Like how it has several different tones, allowing for extra toners to be used to search out multiple lines at once.
