Got to love a tool that will help fix what a supposed electrician couldnt do properly.
I liked it was able to tone cables no problems at all
One of the best I have used. I have been in the Telecom Industry for 30 years.
Used to find circuits and CAT5 runs at an industrial plant. Worked well.
Easy to use and a must for all electricians. Well worth the money
Wish there was a way to turn down the sensitivity, not just the volume. So sensitive it can find wires almost anywhere but it really picks up bleed over too much. Cut wrong wore twice this month be the bleed over signal was being picked up so strong.
Replaced my old one. This is an excellent piece of kit and feels sturdy in the hand ! Would be nice to have a conversion adapter for RJ45/RJ11 and Telephone though so you could multi purpose i
A great way to identify cables in a 20 year old “structured wiring” installation. Paid for itself in time saved running around.
Does what it says it does, I have electrical background, so I know this tool n how to use it. It will help you find outlets or switches back to a panel that’s not labeled correctly
I didn’t do what I needed but I should have read a little better probably work good for what it was made fo
Much more durable and user friendly than the fluke. At half the price. Can’t go wrong.
had an abs issue on a vehicle, broken wire but couldnt locate it, this did the trick finding it.
The price was right, it fit in my kit perfectly. It has saved me valuable time when trying to locate which wires go where.
It’s super simple to use… just remember to turn it off when you no longer need to use it. Very happy with my purchase.
En un ambiente con muchos cables, es dificil identificar los cables, ya que la punta es de plstico y no metlica, as que es susceptible al ruido.
I have used this tracing wires, finding breaker’s in unmarked panels even found found a broken wire under a house that had been pinched by a wire staple and burnt in two. Great tool for the money!
The Klein toner and probe kit is one of the best out there in my opinion. Very easy quick setup, very accurate, all in one. Comes with everything you need. Gives you options on how to hook up with either rj11 or rj45 jacks or alligator clips with nail beds to clip onto wires. Simply to operate and easy to use., has great range and depth detection inside houses. Comes with batteries and pouch to hold everything together. Fast and damage free shipping.
Coming from a electrician of 16 years this is a time saver doing remodel work very easy to use ive used it on several jobs enough to have a good opinion on how good it is and it is very accurate for example you can connect the meter to a home run and use the probe in the panel to find it by runnning it close to breakers would definitely recommend to another electrician as its a must have
This toner is a huge help identifying wire locations. Much better than some others I’ve used.
Awesome tool I use this a lot as an electrician. Thanks
The speaker is very loud. The probe will pick up tone from a couple of feet away then be blaring when you touch the copper of the cable. It will pick up some cross talk so make sure you’re hitting the copper. I’ve use it daily on both shielded and unshielded with no issues. Works with previous models and other tone gerators. If you need a new tip it’s less than $10 on home depots website. ” Replacement Tip for Probe-Pro Tracing Probe” Model #VDV999-068. My only wish is that the probe had a lock button or a push for tone button rather than always on.
What can I say this is reliable tool company! Works like it should.
I like the way you can change the sound of the warble tone . also it has very high amplitude. I use it to test continuity on telephone lines and trace cables over long distances . I highly recommend this produc
This unit will only trace out open ended wires. if you’re trying to trace something connected it will not give a signal. But other than that its a nice unit.
Instructions not clear, but it’s a great product for tracing wires. It is great with 120volt wires, but make sure power is off to circuit. It is confusing because it says only use on 60volt and under and 20 volt and under for energized wires.
This item works great. More functions than ones that cost more money
The tester is very good, although I wish the manufacturer would have added the function that when I short the two wires the generator tone will changes to a different tone. Besides that the unit is solid.
This is a terrific tool for tracing wiring. Just be sure to isolate the wire that you want to trace. This makes troubleshooting and figuring out wiring much easier. Saves significant time and guesswork.
If you have any of the Klein scout range with the toning function, this is a must have.
The probe is powered by a 9v battery and is secured in a screwed compartment on the back. There is a quite powerful light on the front of it that is ultra handy when searching for cables in the back of patch panels. This can be turned on independently from the toning function.
The volume level is controlled by two buttons and the highest levels is quite high and also can have a pair of headphones attached using a 3.5mm jack.
The outer casing is very rugged and durable and does look like it will withstand a lot of use in all different kinds of environments.
Overall, a very handy and well priced probe to pair with the Klein scout range.
The product works extremely well and is built to last. The delivery was very fast.
The only one little complaint is the power button can be bumped ON/Off very easily and would be nice to have a hold button feature to switch on rather than quick press!
Had an open circuit that I could not locate. This tool helped me find it right away.
Excelente producto, ofrece una excelente relacin calidad-precio y es muy funcional, cumple 100% con su propsito.
I like my tester so far I have used it twice, I hope it will last me for a long time
It emits a radio signal which wants to travel through the wire you’re chasing, but will bleed over into other wires in the same bundle so watch for that. You can listen for the strength of the signal from each wire in the bundle and determine which one you are connected to on the other end. Just be aware of this and you’ll enjoy the tool.
Es buena herramienta, funciona muy bien, los materiales se sienten de muy buena calidad y el que se pueda cambiar la punta le da un plus
I had to trace some circuits through an older house. It works really well, easily picks up the signal through drywall. It saved me so much time.
Great tool to have, great price. I am totally satisfied.
Accurate and works well; having the light on the probe is a bonus, as it gets tiring holding both a tool and a torch at the same time!
The has been in use for some time now and i can therefore say that the is very good! In addition, the tip has been replaced and there are no changes at all. MHM recommends!!!
I tried so many until now. This is the deal! This is what you want! Flowless! The best!
It shows and says there is a probe with it and in the reviews and questions also a case of which there is neithe
Excellent toner with very strong broadcast functions, a variety of tones and open/short/load indication. The only slight drawback is that the button for the sniffer latches on so if it gets pressed inadvertently in the pouch it will stay on killing the battery. I printed a hard plastic tube to go around it to prevent this, but the industry standard is a momentary switch – for a reason. The sniffer also has direct connection ports to confirm correct pairs, a headphone jack and even a handy LED light.
Excellent set – especially for the price
Items works well, I have never used a toner that was perfect, they can all be a bit “staticky” if that is a word. This did do what it was supposed to do though. Let me trace some 110v electrical wires in my home. At one time I used these for work for IT cables often. They will let you trace any copper wire but you do need access to the actual copper part of the wire with either the clamps or the connector.
Needed to trace power wires. This made the hunt for the blown GFCI outlet super easy, and super fast.
Turn off breakers, attach to wires of an outlet that doesn’t work, and start your hunt.
The volume was good, and the tool was very sensitive!! A must have for any home owner!!
Klein anything is usually pretty good. Works for me only issue I’ve had with it was the batteries that came with it were in there backwards thought my unit was busted because it would only stay on if you held down the power button. Probably a fluke thing but after putting them in correctly it works as it should.
Before this Klein unit I had a cheap tone/probe set that would get the job done, it generated a tone on the cable it was hooked up to. One problem I always had was that sometimes it picked interference and I couldn’t always tell if I was getting interference or tone. I love that this has the option to alternate tone frequency, so it sounds almost like a siren. Let’s you be 100% certain you’re on the correct cable and eliminates any guess work.
Good quality product , does exactly what it says it does , grea
This tool has saved me time and mega problems. Very good for tracing wires not landed in electrical panels. Easy to use to locate and trace wires within the walls and ceiling. A life savor for sure and you can’t beat the price.
Get your self one of this tools will save you lots of time
Really impressed with this device. I have never used one before, and didn’t even know they existed until watching a few YouTube videos on how to trace wires (no voltage). The device kept telling me things about the dead wire that I didn’t believe, yet it was correct in the end, and saved me serious money by not having to call an electrician/contractor to find out why a set of wall outlets had stopped working. Have an issue with a hidden GFCI outlet, or blown fuse/bad connection somewhere? Get one of these to find it.
Get it! Buy it! I bought this and I was a little unsure because my colleagues in IT typically purchase Fluke. I don’t have money for that! I purchased this and popped my headphones in and Wow! It picked up The tone immediately.
I love the fact that their is a Continuance light on the toner.
The probe has a light for dark areas and the bag is a nice touch!
I am building a networking toolkit of my own, for home use. Klein is fast becoming my brand to get.
The light will come on with a slight touch in the pouch and run the battery down.
I initially thought that this device was for tracing cable runs within walls and whilst it may potentially assist with this, I don’t think that it is going to be reliable enough to provide a definitive conclusion. For example, when I pointed the tracer at the wall around a light switch, there was a definitive response, indicating that a live cable was present. However, I also got a response when pointing it at a door and I’m pretty sure there are no live cables in that!
In truth, the main purpose of this device is to identify, in a bundle of cables, which ones are live and which ones aren’t. I tested it out on a set of appliance cables and the response was conclusive – when the power was switched on, there was a very clear response. When the power was switched off, there was no response. I appreciate that that it’s easy to tell if a cable is live or not by looking at a switch but if you are trying to trace a fault on the cable, this won’t be so obvious. This is where this tracer would be invaluable.
Incorporated into this tracer is an LED light and whilst this isn’t overly bright, it certainly does provide a useful benefit when working in dark or concealed locations. The volume of the response can also be adjusted, which is helpful for situations where there is lots of background noise but care does need to be taken with this so that a very marginal response isn’t mistaken for a live cable, when the volume is turned up to its maximum level (and vice versa).
As a DIY user (rather than a professional), I’m sure that there would be many more uses for a tracer like this but the one I have described above (fault finding on electrical cables) is the key use for me.
Probe working well for my use. Wish it would have came with a case or fit in the case for the VDV501-852 tester case I purchased.
I’m not an electrician. I simply work around my home, Such a useful tool I’ve found multiple ways to use it in tracing down electrical issues in my house with 30 year old wiring. had a faulty ethernet cable with both ends not easy to access to work on. Was able to confirm which connector was at fault instead of guessing.
I’m not an Electrician, but do all of my own electrical work. I had a dead Post Light and could not find the source of power. After this tool arrived in the mail, my problem was solved in 15 minutes. While it is primarily a tool for cable diagnostics, with a dead A/C circuit it works great.
Note: I was sent this to review, however it does not come with the Probe Pro unit, which is required to use this. I was eventually able to track one down and borrow it for a short while. I could only really confirm that it worked fine, but beyond that it’s performance cannot really be judged.
The packaging for this is a basic plastic clamshell, which isn’t much for such an expensive bit of kit. Thankfully the device itself is quite robust, with good build quality throughout. Buttons are nice and big and well positioned.
The lights and tones are clear and give certainty to what you are doing. The cabling is top-notch and gives a great grip and contact with any type of wiring. You get a full kit ready to go, including batteries, but of course you also need the Probe Pro unit to actually use this kit. This costs 50, so the full kit will cost over 120.
Overall this is a very well made and professional bit of kit that is worth the price.
Make sure you buy the cable tracer tool also or this will do you no good. After I got both tools. They worked great. I found a bad wire inside my wall in 20 min.
Worked perfectly. Was able to trace the wires and repair the break without digging up all 1000 feet of three conductors was able to isolate and repair
Quickly and easily
This did exactly what I wanted it to do – help me find out where the cables from various telephone jacks were terminated on a telco terminal strip in a basement. The tone generator will generate a variety of tones both steady tones and the good old two tone signals.
I have a couple of Klein tools and they are all top quality and this is no different. Unfortunately they decide to put it in that awful blister packaging but that’s the only negative thing I have to say about it.
This is just one half of the equipment needed to test lines. You need a signal generator at one end and this is used to detect which wire is producing the signal when you hold it near to it.
It worked great for some network cables I have at work when we needed to find which wire was which out of loads of connections we had. You can also double check it’s the correct wire by inserting some splices wires into the base of the unit. I just use an old cut networking cable with an adapter on the end to do this.
The unit itself is solidly built and the buttons are easy to press. There is also a handy LED on the end so you can see in dark spaces. Also there’s a socket for headphones which is handy if your in a hard to hear area.
Great bit of kit if you are in the market for a tester. Just make sure you get the signal generator as well.
This probe was ordered for tracing non-live cables. I figured that it would be useful for finding network cables that were unenergised.
However, I did not realise that this device really needs to have a separate signal generator for the best results. According to Klein’s website, as I suspected, any signal generator should do. Most of this devices sold on Amazon appear to come bundled with one anyway, for only a little bit more outlay, so I would recommend that you find a ProbePro/Signal generator bundle rather than buying the probe on its own.
Although I did not have a signal generator, I was still able to use this device. It would indicate powered wires with the base noise becoming much louder when placed close to a known live wire. A pair of headphones can also be connected – but I did not use this. I would suspect this would be useful for multi-wire tracing in noisier environments.
This device is sturdy and well made, with the buttons working easily. There is even a small LED light just under the probe. The only downside was to remove the battery protector to use the device – a one time only process – the battery compartment screw had to be loosened. This is not any major issue. Indeed, it’s a plus that this type of device comes supplied with AA batteries already installed.
I found that this device would detect low voltage wires too (5 V power supply cables and connected Ethernet cables). However, if you really want to use the device for what it is intended – finding breaks or discontinuous circuits in low voltage wires, you should use a signal generator. It goes without saying, this is a tool that is best used by people who know what they are doing. If you do not have much electrical knowledge, you should not rely on this to find live wires. While this device will do so, I wouldn’t solely rely on it and would recommend that you find an alternative device.
If in doubt – don’t do it. Always play it safe with electricity.
I am electrical apprentice and my journeyman has to borrow my Klein tone tester because of better functionality and tones, compare to Klein tone cube he has
I dont like that tone does not pass if there is continuity on the other end. i use this for toning possibly live jacks (Phone system, low voltage from phone company) and i have to use my southwire toner so i can get a tone, with the klein probe. Other than that the light is very nice and i like how i dont have to press the button while toning, just turn it on and go.
I was sent the VDV500-063 toner generator model to try, on its own it is not much use, you need a tracer tool, luckily I was sent one of them too.
This item is only to generate a tone on inactive wiring, the tracer tool finds and traces where they go, you ideally need the VD500-123 tracer tool.
The whole kit is designed to help electricians and electrical installers or cctv installers or alarm specialists, etc…in fact it is for anyone who would ever need to know where a wire goes and where it comes out, this is especially is you are renovating a property but not ripping everything out, this kit will help you trace wires, even if they are disconnected.
The tone generator induces an audio tone into the cable that the tracer tool can find inside walls.
I hate the blister packing it comes in, I’ve cut myself so many times on the stuff.
The kit includes 4 aa batteries and cable clips and an RJ45 plug, the display shows you wire numbers if there are multiple plugged into the ethernet socket of the trace
This is great for working with AV and Network cabling. We have recently moved into a heavily modernised 1960s house that has a lot of solid (rather than partition) walls and the previous owner had use a lot of cat 5 cabling for both data and Audi visual (HDMI over cat 5 distribution etc). Its says its designed to be used with a specific tone generator, but worked fine with an extent generator I already had that had a rubbish probe. The features on this are great allowing an analogue headphone to be used and also with a light tip which came in use several times. Its pretty straightforward to use and in fairness, you won’t use this often at all, but Shen you do need it, it is invaluable.
I ordered this for my partner as he’s an electrical engineer . I don’t understand much about how these things work to be honest, I just go on what he tells me. It’s decently made and seems sturdy but unfortunately it doesn’t work without the generator that plugs into it. I need to order one before I can get it to work . My partner thinks it’s reasonably priced but you’d normally buy a kit that comes together as one is no good without the other.
Klein Tools Cable Tracer Pro Tracing Probe with Replaceable Non-Metallic, Conductive Tip and a Light for Use in Dark Spaces VDV500-123
The product.
This is a cable tracer to see it the cable is live, connected correctly or broken. It is battery operated — needs 4 x AAA batteries which will run it for many hours.
Features.
It has a built-in torch so you can work in dark spaces with network cable etc. It also has a headphone socket so that you can hear tones in noisy environments.
Comment.
This unit is only part of the kit you need to fault trace. You will also need a tone / signal generator to energise the line so you can trace it. This is sold separately so this is only part of the tool kit you need. However, this is a very good tracer and the headphone socket is a brilliant addition as you can work in noisy environments.
Overall.
A very capable bity of kit for professional use. Please note you will also need a tone generator to make this useful. Otherwise it is a very good diagnostic tool.
Very accurate, does the job perfectly. It feels sturdier than my last one and I like the textured finish
Tracing wires can be a fun thing to do is not a statement anyone would make. I remember years ago I took over the lease on a big industrial unit where the telephone wiring had been butchered leaving just a nest of wires going around the building. Fortunately, I had a mate that had the tools I could borrow.
This probe is really half of a full set needed to do the job properly. The other half is a tone generator and Klein just happens to make one which I reviewed recently. In theory, you can use a tone generator from another manufacturer but it’s better to use a matched pair.
In its basic form, you use the tone generator at one end of a non-energised cable that you wish to trace the other end of. Then using the probe you run it along all the cable the other end until it picks up the generated tone. The probe only has to be placed near the cables and it will be the loudest one that’s connected to the tone generator. If you wish to further confirm that it’s the right wire you can connect the wire into the base of the probe.
The most common uses for this system is telephone wiring and network wiring but in theory, could be used in other applications. Even tracing mains cabling is possible. The most important factor though is that the cables should not be connected to anything on either end.
There are many other functions these devices can do but I don’t want to get too technical. Have a look at their website by searching ‘kleintools’ where you can download brochures and user manuals.
Overall, half of a useful cable finder tool. Hope that helps.
The device is a well built tool with rubber sides for a good grip if using this on a work site and it should hold up well for most trades people. It is simple and easy to use with an on button and volume keys, plus a headphone jack for noisey or quiet locations. It’s meant to be used with a VDV500-063 which is sold separately however the kit with both in is substantially cheaper so I removed a star because the price should either be similar or don’t sell them separately. Based on the reviews of others this also works with a number of other generators so I think the description needs to be clearer for everything works with.
If the description was updated to cover lots of different compatible tone generators it would make more sense to sell this separately rather than in a complete kit. Overall it’s a quality bit of kit but the description and paperwork that comes with it need a lot of work.
Hopefully my review has been helpful
This tool works with my scout-pro, it is loud and clear and quite accurate too. This is good for tracing existing cable runs or phone line runs behind the dry wall. This is very-well made and looks tough and durable that will last. I just think there are quite a lot of cheaper alternatives out there that does the same job, which includes the toner, but if you dont mind the price you get what you paid for.
This is a good quality product, which will help for every internet engineer to find faults in a network or telephones lines. But be aware, it can be used just with tracing probe which is sold separately. Nevertheless, it is a high-quality product which feels rugged ( which is good as it sometimes can be dropped on the ground ) and are made from good materials and should last for a long time.
I’ve used it a few times so far and it hasn’t disappointed. Works grea
Tone generators are handy tools if you need to troubleshoot telephone, network or alarm circuits. You do really need some knowledge of tone generators and what they can offer. I only have limited knowledge from when I had to sort out the phone wiring in some commercial premises that I leased. I borrowed the equipment similar to this off a friend.
This Klein Tools tone generator is really only half the system that you need. To fully use it you need to purchase the tracing probe from Klein Tools. Without the probe, you can’t trace the tone signal on the remote end of the cable. With this being the main functionality of a tone generator, I don’t see why they sell them separately.
With just this unit, you can check the continuity of the cable and detect the POTS wire on a telephone line. You can also detect which two wires are part of a twisted pair.
To be honest I’m not sure if other tracing probes will work with this generator. Logically, probes from other manufacturers should work but I can’t guarantee this.
The price isn’t bad for such a limited market device. The quality is high and it looks like it’ll take quite a bit of abuse being carried around in a toolbox. It uses 4 x AAA batteries which are included and installed. You just need to pull out the battery isolator tab. There are instructions included but it is aimed at the professional rather than the novice.
Overall, not really useable without a probe. Hope that helps.
You receive a quality Klein product, which I was expecting, the Klein range are always quality
The tone generator is made to identify wire circuits, wire pairs and short circuits with 5 different tones on non active wires, However, it does require the probe-pro tracing probe which are viable on Amazon at just under 50
The alligator clips are quality, good heavy duty cable again is quality and also includes one for telephone lines
Looks great and has rubber edges for added protection.
A quality product, I do think its a shame that they just don’t sell the two products as a pack rather than you requiring another item
I used to tone and identify 18 gauge data wires and 16 gauge low voltage cables behind drywall. I was able to locate hidden wire behind the dry wall. It’s a keeper.
Works well with other klien products such as their cable tester/tone
Great for use all klein tools i recommend when doing electrical
This is the best affordable toner set i have used. From the moment you hold it you feel its quality. It beats the cheapo ones i have used previously.
I cannot compare it to the Fluke series as I have not owned any fluke products yet.
Works fine, but beware if you need a new tip. The cheapest I found was on Amazon for 41.
You can buy a new probe fo 49.95!
Perfect for what I need it for
Quality is superb
I had to figure out my sprinkler system wiring and this tool made it very simple. Very user friendly and time saver. I absolutely recommend it.
Awesome. My first tracer and it has let me untangle about 30 cables in my mom’s house to find the ones I need to run Ethernet to several bedrooms.
This is a very nice toner. It is built well and doesn’t feel cheap and plastic. I was having problems with toning RJ45 CAT5 cables. The toner has a RJ11 connector so it only sends the tone down 3 wires instead of 8 so the tone is very feint. I solved this problem by stripping back a cat 5 cable and twisting all 8 wires together and crimping. This has helped tremendously in tracing wires and now sends the tone down all 8 wires. Makes my job a lot easier and saves time.
I was able to easily trace a wired alarm system throughout my house. Well worth the money! I would but this again without hesitation.
I bought this signal generator to help troubleshoot a bad 120-volt circuit in my motorhome. There were no schematics to use and the manufacture was bought be another who said they had none as well. This tool is not to be used on energized circuits. The outlets in the front up behind the tv were dead. I found a piece of Romex behind an outlet by the bedroom tv that wasn’t connected. I tried a continuity test with the conductors and the front outlets but there was none. The front Romez disappeared into the wall that was that for tracing. I have a generator for tracing house circuits but the circuit needs to be energized and this is dead. When this one arrived it was packaged nicely and had everything needed to get started immediately. I connected it to the front Romex conductors and was able to trace the signal through the upper front cabinet into the ceiling down the ceiling through a couple of closets rite to the end of the disconnected Romex. The wires were concealed in the ceiling the whole way. The Romex must be damaged in some way but the signal was still able to transmit to the end of it load and clear. After a week of searching and testing, this little tester made short work of an impossible situation. After rerouting a new piece of Romex the front outlet are working.
You simply cannot go wrong with Klein Tools. I have almost everything Klein so I may be biased a bit but I do not need to talk up this product for it to be a quality one. Accurate readings, multiple tone frequencies and great range on the wand has saved me many a headache in someone’s attic trying to trace a wire that, yes, was underneath some spray foam insulation that ran the entire length of the house. This is a must have for my tool kit.
When connected to the ground and phase of a wire, this tool produces a clear and unmistakable signal. I was able to make this tool work in a 4 gang box full of wires. There is no mistaking the target wire.
I did not test the tools performance when detecting wires through walls.
We bought a large new to us home that had dozens of unlabeled low voltage runs – cat6, speaker and coax. Within a few hours, I was able to sort out and label everything with this device. Very easy to use and find wires buried in walls.
It works as advertised and came well before the end date given….and good value for the money spent.,,,it could be better if it was able to work on live lines as another brand does….however this was better value for money.
My husband loves it. It makes his job a whole lot easier. All he uses is Klein products. He’s very happy with it.
Excellent price for Klein tools. This tone and probe set is excellent, has different tones, extra tests to prove the pairs you are searching, the probe is solid and good quality.
This tracker works well with all tone modes on the Klein models Scout Pro, Scout Pro 2-LT, and Commander.
It also works well with all other tone generators I have tried including my ancient Coil Model 22. In high ambient noise locations it may be difficult to hear at a working distance, but it has the capability of an external headset (not included) that can make it quite sensitive. Great companion to any of the above models.
Great product! A must for someone in the Gate Industry
I purchased the Klein Tools VDV500-123 Cable Tracer Probe Pro January 3, 2020 and it has worked very well so far. I have tested it with my Scout Pro 2 (VDV501-098) and my Scout Pro 2 LT (VDV501-108) both of which have a Tone Generator function, and it works with both of them.
This Tracing Probe has a very solid feel to it and the “rubberish” sides keep it from slipping around in my hand (or slipping out of it).
I removed 1 star because of the confusion created by Klein Tools description which strongly implies that this probe only works with the VDV500-063 which I thought I would have to buy just to use this probe. Luckily the description is wrong because I really don’t need another Tone Generator.
Since this is an “Analog” Tone Probe I’m pretty sure that it should work with most lower-end to middle-end Tone Generators.
