Gloomhaven banner

Euro-inspired tactical combat in an evolving campaign

Being a mercenary on the edge of civilisation is anything but easy. For those stupid or brave enough to leave the relative safety of Gloomhaven’s walls, adventure, wealth, and fame await in wild and shadowy forests, snowy mountain caves, and long-forgotten crypts. Just don’t expect anyone to pay for your services up-front, because no one expects you to come back alive.

Gloomhaven is a cooperative game of tactical combat in a unique, evolving fantasy world. Each player will assume the role of a hardened mercenary with their own personal motives. Together, players will fight through a campaign of scenarios that reacts and changes based on the player’s actions, creating a unique game state full of discovered treasure, retired adventurers and permanent choices. Each scenario offers players deep tactical decisions, where ability cards have multiple uses, and using the right ability at the right time can mean the difference between success and failure. Gloomhaven offers streamlined tactical combat without dice against fully automated enemies, each with their own unique behaviour patterns. In this box, players will find a fully realised fantasy campaign experience of unparalleled scope and depth.

Gloomhaven is a little complex but it is a beautiful and amazing board game!!!

We loved it, close to the PC game and then easy to understand, otherwise quite complex rules, but you get leaded into while playing.
Was great to play the campaign over summer holidays, and now you can make up your own quests. My boys love it.

This is a really amazing board game, might be complicated to learn for users who are not used to these kind of games though, with many rules and actions.
Only downside is that every mission is pretty long and it takes a lot of time just the setup only 🙁 but it’s worth it!

A great introduction to Gloomhaven in a small package, teaches you how to play in a gentle style slowly introducing all the rules a few at a time.

Loved the game. Just a shame the box has a vinyl wrap not printed that looks taccy and it needs storage compartments inside. Other than that it’s great and theres so much to it.

This game is as good as people say. But it is not for the faint hearted. It is complex, it takes a while to set up for each play and has intricate gameplay. But if you are willing to invest in learning the rules and have a couple of friends to play with, then it is unparalleled as a boardgame experience in scope and mechanics. If you’re new to this type of game I recommend starting with Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion as it provides a great set of early scenarios that gradually builds the complexity and teaches through play.

P.s. this game can be played solo. But it is a challenge to run two characters and manage the monsters. Also I recommend using an app like Gloomhaven Helper to automate some of the admin (particularly if playing solo).

P.p.s My box came a little damaged – but didn’t effect the internal components and didn’t feel the need to drop a star for i

So it takes a while to read the rules but after a few games it’s pretty clear.
Such a good game! Thoroughly enjoyable, so many levels to it. We have binge played this every chance we have had but there’s still so much left to explore and discover. Also there are added mechanics to certain levels and honestly it’s been so much fun, each scenario with different given objectives has made for varied gameplay too.

A rich, satisfying, social experience – if you’re willing to put the effort in. Don’t be fooled – for all its wonderful complexity, the core mechanisms, once learnt, are easy to understand with practice.

    Worth the investme

So far, only a few scenarios in. But have played solo and two player. The game leads you through the rules as you play.
Such a clever way of resolving combat!

My first experience of the original Gloomhaven game was not the best of introductions. Yes, I loved the gameplay and rpg character building elements but man, was it a slog to get going. It took us a full day to get through the first scenario – and that’s not because its necessarily hard, but all the barriers to entry that come with it. Compare that to my experience with Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion (with a new group too) and I’d say that within the first hour or so we’d opened the game, chosen our characters and completed the first scenario. It’s a brilliantly curated introduction to the game that really wants to address the feedback of the original by giving you just enough each scenario so as to not completely overwhelm your players.

If you already own Gloomhaven and you’ve found it difficult to get momentum with your group, buy it. If you’re thinking about getting Gloomhaven, get this instead. Smaller investment, better experience and it will almost certainly hype you up further for the full game. And as an added bonus, you can even transfer your characters over too.

The box arrived in good condition, nicely packaged. First things first!! There’s a lot of stuff in the box!!!
There is even a 4 page guide to how much stuff is in the box and how to set it up.
Warning – this is not a game for people who like a couple of rounds of Yahtzee. There are a lot of components and quite a lot to learn; even punching the cardboard counters out and organising the pieces will take a good hour or so.

You may want to take a colour copy of the city map, or record your progress another way, as you have to stick things on the map to indicate where you are.

There is a handy guide to setting the game up and playing through the first scenarios, which I found very useful. The basic premise is that you have a party of up to 4 characters, and you are going to explore the city of Gloomhaven. The first scenario gets you started with the game mechanics quite easily.

I am playing solo, which involves controlling 2 characters. Whilst everything looked very daunting initially, within 10 minutes I had worked out the turn sequence and mechanics and was enjoying a really entertaining skirmish.

The thing about this game is, you could just play it straight out of the box. However, if you are a bit of a hobbyist, you could also “upgrade” the components. I am sure there are people who have swapped out all the standees for mini-figures and added scenery.

For the moment, I am very happy with it. It’s a DM – less dungeon crawler. There are 25 scenarios, and assuming each one takes 2 hours to play through, that’s a lot of adventuring for the money, and that’s just playing it solo.

My only gripe is that the card stock and counters could probably be a bit better quality. It’s not as good as say, Elder Sign. Nonetheless, this doesn’t detract from the game play at all.

Overall, I can heartily recommend if you are looking for a fantasy dungeon crawler. Very pleased!

Great longevity with this game, 20+hours and still lots to unlock. Takes a while to become familiar with the rules but the complexity adds to the game’s depth. Lots of content too so it is worth the money. Definitely recommended

    Worth it!

We’ve played 4 “scenarios” now, and highly rate it with 4 players.

Immense interactive campaign, but be warned you will need almost a full day per session, and that day will fly past as you get stuck into it!

They also have a companion audio you can buy to narrate the scenarios, highly recommend that as it really sets the scene of each scenario.

Download their free app (on android its free, but paid on iOS) to make combat much quicker.

p.s. buy an insert to save you HOURS setting up and cleaning up.

Haven’t played board games since a kid. Read about Gloomhaven when searching for a game that can as a one player. However, that is an expensive gamble if one does not enjoy it.
Jaws of the Lion is apparently less complicated and an excellent game overall.

This really is 14+. It’s all about blood monsters and the artwork is really graphic. If it was a movie it’d be 18, i suppose.
It’s very complicated. The first five levels are tutorials and we were dreading the next one piling yet more complexity. But once you’re through that you get the hang of it and it’s fun.
You really need a table which you can keep it all out on for weeks until you’re done. It’s too much to be getting it all out and fitting back in the box.

Both beginner friendly and fun!! It eases you into the game giving you plenty of time to learn the mechanics before the difficulty level increases. Of course if you’re more used to gameplay mechanics you can jump in headfirst and increase the difficulty as you see fit. The game is beautifully made and has so many unique and interactive components to gameplay that keeps it interesting and just straight up cool!!

I bought this for my boyfriends birthday in the start of August and its not been put away since. There is so much to do and so many things to explore and discover! Theres achievements to unlock and hidden locations to explore and its endless fun. We are obsessed with this game and Gloomhaven has become our all time favourite boardgame!!

Amazing value for the money too as it comes with some very helpful and engaging pieces.

I’ve always wanted to try the Gloomhaven universe, but was too intimidated by the original box and worried about the set-up time. So you can imagine my happiness when JotL came out. JotL makes the game so much more accessible with its introductory scenarios and scenario booklet. My wife and I are having a blast playing through the game. Some of the scenarios are definitely challenging, but it is nice that the system allows you to keep a lot of the things you gained in a scenario even if you failed it to use on your next retry. The miniatures are great and there are great tutorial videos on Youtube if you like to learn that way. If you are looking to dip your toes into the Gloomhaven universe, I think this is the way to do it!

Man, what can I say that hasn’t been said already. This game ROCKS! Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion is a cooperative RPG table top game that is very “gamey”… in the sense that it feels like a video game but on the table. If you’ve played turn based strategy video games such as Divinity Orginal Sin 2 or XCOM you’ll probably pick this game up very fast.
With that being said, it’s not a very complicated game to start of with. The games has tutorial scenarios that you start on the slowly introduce mechanics to the player so that you’re not overwhelmed when you first start! But trust me that rule book will be your best friend for a while.
I’ve played this game solo (10 hours playtime) and it’s very fun and playable that way, however the pacing can definitely drag at the start because you’re looking at 2 different hands and learning how to play the characters as well. However, I’ve recently started playing with a couple of friends (8 hours) and thats helped a ton with speeding up the game sessions and obviously has made it more enjoyable as a whole.
All in all this game is a 10/10 for me, I do wish that there some more things to do instead of just fight in scenarios and do random city events, but the core gameplay is very solid and the game can screw you over plenty, but it’s so rewarding when you can overcome that and clear the scenario by the skin of your teeth! Just go ahead and buy it already!

Great Introduction to Gloomhaven! NOT HARD TO LEARN!

I play the full gloomhaven game and this is just like it! It’s a fun standalone version that’s simplified basically, four characters you could play and the maps are pre printed on a playbook instead of individual piece you have to assemble every session. It’s definitely easier to learn the game with this version!

When I opened the Amazon box, I noticed that one corner took a pretty good hit (see picture) at some point. Amazon (the shipper) didn’t add enough bubble wrap to keep things in place, so it was pretty loose in there. However, the actual game is phenomenal! Already on scenario 7 with two family members. We are absolutely crazy about it! The price is great too (~$38), especially considering the amount of stuff provided.

This is a very fun game. I looked at the bigger Gloomhaven Game first before finding this one. JOTL reviews said this was a good introduction to the Gloomhaven larger Game. The first five scenarios do a good job of stepping you through the rules. There are extra class cards for these scenarios with learn to play text on them. By the time you get to scenario 4 you replace these learning cards and have your characters full cards at your disposal. I highly recommend this game to anyone interested in trying out the larger Gloomhaven or frosthaven experience.

When I got this game I was surprised how heavy it was, something like 22 pounds. There are a lot of little pieces to punch out. You will need something store everything in. I use a combination of small plastic crafting boxes like those bead boxes, small cardboard boxes (resembles a pizza box) and some small baggies, and card sleeves . It does take a little preperation to set up each adventure. This is a game that you can actually play by yourself because the monsters have their own movements preplanned. It is a lot of fun with more people and the encounters do scale up. There is plenty of replayability. This is not a game for everyone and does take a few adventures to get a hang of the game.

I would say if you have played through GH already you probably know way more than me about the game, bet you already have this JotL version, and can skip this review. If you haven’t picked this up after playing GH, I can see this fulfilling the itch for more diversified game play while awaiting Winterhavens release.

I’ve played Gloomhaven a little before pre-COVID. Picked up this to scratch the itch as a solo attempt and so glad I did. It comes with a lot of material. I mean a lot. Set up is way easier than the standard game due to the book format of the rooms rather than tiles. The lack of tiles doesn’t take away from anything. This allows you a little more freedom to experience the game and see if you’re in for the long haul.

The crawl, walk, run approach I’d much appreciated. It helps establish rules (and good habits) before breaking loose. The format this is presented in easy to reference, I found. After playing the standard GH 1st adventure where it took us about 4-5 hours for 3 of us to finish the first scenario while learning the rules. this ease a much easier bite to chew. If I/we had picked up this starter version and played through, solo or with otherwise, we would be ready to hit the ground running in playing the standard GH game and forsee playing that aame 1st GH in much less time aside from the additional set it would require. Note: there is a great app you to play this a bit easier as well that tracks tokens and also allows you to play from afar with others. Maybe worth checking out if it works for you oyour group so YMMV.

You get a lot out of this game the added characters ensure it stays relevant and worth the time and money investment when you move in to the standard GH.

If you’re looking at the big box of Gloomhaven and debating if you’ll like it or want to invest the time and money to play it, give this one a go first. It has a great tutorial, ramps up the difficulty slowly and keeps things really manageable. In this installment, a lot has been pared down or removed such as reputation, leaving the city, and branching paths. Everything is very linear, the shops don’t carry a lot of supplies, you have few cards to build your deck with as you level up, and the variety of enemies is much smaller. If that sounds like a step down and you really enjoyed the big, complicated world of the original, you can skip this one and go right to Frosthaven when that comes out. If you haven’t played GH yet or need a small snack to hold you over, this is a solid game in its own right, even if it feels a little simple at times.

“Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion” is a solo / co-op fantasy campaign for 1 to 4 players, the little brother to the very popular “Gloomhaven” campaign released several years ago. While definitely a fantasy game, it eschews many of the tropes of that genre. The clever game system uses cards to plot out characters’ turns.

    Pros:
    – First rate physical components; attractive and sturdy.
    – Meaningful and interesting choices every turn.
    – The programmed learning format (gradual introduction of the game’s rules) over the first five scenarios helps players learn the game.
    – The four included characters and interesting and each offers some unique options.
    – Strong player progression – ‘leveling up’ will give player’s new options for their characters’ decks.
    – The combat resolution system, using a deck of modifier cards, is less random that a dice-based system.
    – Each monster type has its own unique deck of activation cards that alleviates the need for an overlord/gamemaster while providing some theme and individuality to each type of enemy.

    Cons:
    – Nominally a ‘legacy’ game (components are altered as the story progresses) so theoretically the game can only to played once. However, I’ve found that a little extra record keeping can allow you to by-pass this.
    – While the rules are pretty clear, the increasingly complicated card abilities can be a little tricky to parse sometimes.
    – The spiral-bound map book replaces a mapboard or map pieces that are fit together. It’s a simple alternative but somewhat limited.
    – Gameplay is strongly focused on combat.

    Recommendation:

This is a great game for experienced gamers willing to commit to a long campaign over many play sessions. The game is ‘thinky’ and requires some real thought when selecting the cards for each character’s turn. The storyline plays out over multiple scenarios and each will take several hours to play.

This is not a game for young kids. Not only are the rules and game play too difficult for young ones, the story line is decidedly dark.

So this is a weird one to review and people on the internet have already reviewed it better. This game is amazing! That being said. This game is not easy to learn, probably one of the harder games I’ve learned to play. I would say this is a Dungeons and Dragons level game. If you are the type of person who is willing to learn dungeons and dragons, then you can expect the same amount of effort necessary here. If you like D&D but you never read the whole player’s handbook…. this may not work out for you.
This is not giftable. You need to be in clear communication with the receiver on if they want this or not to a level that it’s not a surprise item to get someone.

Get some storage. Do your research, possibly get the gloomhaven helper app. Play Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion first. Then if you’re still interested, buy this Perfectly wonderful Game!

The game itself deserves every one of the five stars I gave it. Absolutely a fantastic game. But it’s not for the beginner gamer – the mechanics are unique, and the rules are complex. That’s not to say they don’t make sense, only that it’s described as a “heavy” game in both the figurative, and literal, sense.
For anyone seriously interested in Gloomhaven – experienced gamers too – I would strongly suggest getting “Jaws of the Lion” first. The makers of Gloomhaven were VERY smart to create an introduction-type game to the Gloomhaven franchise. It’s just as fun and teaches you the game in bite-sized pieces that are easy to digest.

Best for a group with regular meet ups, the individual scenarios as once offs aren’t as enjoyable outside of the campaign. The campaign is so massive this is only a small complai

The game itself is amazing on its own; no doubt about it. I am just playing the campaign alone, with the occasional additional player 🙂

But the quality of what you get for your money is crazy high! Everything is essentially cards and cardboard tiles/pieces with plastic, resulting in cheap and practical components. However, the high resolution of the printouts and the coating of all these pieces makes it into a quality product. Highly recommended!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is an amazong way to learn the game and try to see if you will fully like it before buying the full game. So far amazed about the game. The fantasy and adventure is almost only in the background, what is amazing about this game is the strategy and the mechanics. Be aware of loads of admin, make sure one of the players really like organization and keeping tracknof everything.

Will recomend anyone to buy this first before investing in Gloomhaven.

Another thing to add, love the fact of the maps/board withing the campaign book, not more dealing with a thousand tiles to build different scenarios

Finally took the plunge on Gloomhaven after mo this of coveting. The detail is immense and even though we have yet to play our first game, are impressed with the contents and quality. There are pros and cons though. Two cons: 1) time to punch out all the pieces. 2) And this is a major one – for a game costing 100+ they really should have included an insert to hold all the pieces. I had to but one separately and that’s another 25 gone. The rules are long, but not too complex and there are plenty of videos and guides online. I also bought the sticker pack to save ruining the game book and map (recommended).

Absolutely love this game. Well designed, great fun and you get sooo much for your money! The box is extremely heavy and so packed that you can’t get it all back in the box after you get it out. Really recommend.

Good game. Quite hard to wrap your head around initially but once you get going it’s relatively straight forward.

Some parts of it feel quite cheap compared to other cheaper board games like Talisman though… the box cover is a graphic glued onto cardboard which looks tacky.

PROBLEM: CJ-MAX (seller) have second hand copies being held onto in their stock so you may get sent a used copy. Amazon were kind enough to resolve this matter for me and send me a brand new copy of the 6th (most recent) printing.

I spent 3 weeks trying to get it from a independent shop only to be told at the end they didn’t have it in stock. When I ordered from here, it took 1 day.
Great game – quite a hard to understand initially but very easy once you’ve played it through a couple times.

Such an amazing game, but it was a little overwhelming and difficult to learn at first. I highly recommend watching some YouTube tutorials before attempting. But now that we have got the gist it is great!! We’re hooked and can easily see how this game will provide us with years of fun!! Well worth the money. The only thing is it has so many little pieces and characters that we need to buy a gloomhaven insert organiser because it’s driving us mad trying to find everything. Also we’ve just started using the gloomhaven app to track things and it’s great once you know what you’re doing!!

Played this a lot over the Christmas holiday; great as a two player game. Learning curve is pretty good, and there’s a hundred hours or so of playtime to be had from the main campaign game.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersGame is number 1 overall on boardgamegeek. not much I can add to that really.
It is just brilliant, considering the wealth of components and scenarios to play it is great value.
the gameplay is incredibly well thought out, rules fairly straightforward. The most complex rules are handling how enemies focus on players, but once you play a scenario you’ll get it.

The only negative is that they haven’t sorted out the printing quality on the cardboard pieces. The images aren’t always perfectly centered, noticeable on the smaller tokens (gold, health etc) and can tear easily when removing for the first time.

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersI am still playing the campaign. The game seems amazing. The RPG immersion is all inside. But the components quality, for the high price we pay, could be better.

Tiles edges tend to crumble at the slightest touch. Many pieces of them and tokens seems to be of an used game even before you start to play the game. The box is so massive with so many components and you struggle to keep them organised. A better plastic insert would alsso be a good idea.

Also, with that enormous quantity of componentes, you will need a big table to play the game mostly (start from a 6 chairs one). Think about it if you live alone in a small apartment, maybe you ll have to play it on the floor.

Plastic miniatures are nice though. The case with every character components (there are 17 of them) are also well made.

The rule book is well ilustrated, with good quality paper. And the basics of the game, once you ve read and played one first mission, are very easy to master.

An excellent game. But a bit isapointed by the cardboard componentes and play cards quality vs price paid. I would give it a 3 star. But the game is so awesome that deserves a 5. Finally, 4 star.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersDefinitely one of the best (or maybe *the* best) board game I’ve ever played.

It’s big, has a pretty steep learning curve and takes a while to really get into and the setup and teardown are definitely quite cumbersome (you’ll need some way to organize all the components). However, the payoff is definitely worth it, no other game compares

This game is great. You definitely get your pounds per wear out of this item. The game needs improvement to its rules as some things are left unclear as to what to do in certain situations. Due to the large community of players in this game, most questions are answered online and its great that new updates and editions are being brought out. Great fun and lots of investment in terms of time. Great game.

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersUnfortunately missed out on the Kickstarters ($80 with postage included from America) for this and have had to wait absolute ages for europe supplier option to make this even close to affordable but I am over the preverbial moon with this purchase. It is stated as a 1-4 game but if playing solo campaign then you need to control 2 characters, which is certainly not unusual for this game type. There is a pure solo option whereby a scenario has been created for each character in the game but would not recommend running these until you have played the campaign as you will likely hit spoilers. The game scales very well when played at either 2,3,4 character and it even provides an additional scaling option based on increased difficulty for a party of experienced players or decreased if the game group is new and struggling with the actions strategy. There are more scenarios available outside of whats in the box, A special adventure (numerous scenarios) was created specifically for the 2nd edition kickstarter and supporters have created ‘homebrew’ content available from various gaming focused sites. A new expansion is also coming soon, if not already out BUT there is plenty in the box to keep you(and hopefully friends) amused for many many hours before needing to spend any more. This is clearly a considered price point purchase for most and if you can get it cheeper as distribution improves all power to you, but whatever price you end up paying, I don’t beleive you’ll be disapponted. Good adventuring.
