Common problems & solutions
Q1: There is no COM when connect the machine to software.
1. Please check if the driver installed successfully. You can remove the driver, and re-install.
2. Check USB port and make sure it is completely connected. Power on the CNC machine.
3. Use another USB port for connection.
Q2: When I connect the software, it says âport openâ.
1. Check the E-stop, make sure it is not pressed down. If it is pressed down, the machine cannot work even though you click unlock. In this case, you need to release the E-stop first, and then click unlock.
2. Check the limit switch. If any axis triggers the limit switch, the machine will lock, too. In this case, please follow this video to solve the limit switch problem.
Q3: I connect the machine to software successfully, but it canât move any axis.
1. Each time you power on the machine, you need to click âunlockâ button first, and then it can work.
2. Check the E-stop and limit switch as Q2.
Q4: I canât engrave circle but an oval, what should I do?
Check the blue coupler and make sure it is tightened. Loosen coupler may cause losing steps during engraving and lead to inaccuracy.

hi all. not sure who might read this but here goes. to make it clear i paid for this with my own money and i get nothing from fox alien (apart from product support). there is a reason why you are looking at this machine. You want to play. it is a great machine to start with. you can get the uncased one but i am a neat freak and it makes for easy clean up for me. You can do alot with this set up as is but i would suggest to upgrade the spindle if you want to do some heavy carving. swapping the spindle for a laser is a bit of a pain with the case but for me it is worth it.
the main question to me has been would i buy it again…. yes would i recomend fox alien….. yes. i think they are good with the whole support and ive learned more with there help then i could from a 3018 box job. it cost more but the support has been more than worth it. so yes there are cheaper options but you are in the cold if it goes wrong. i like the saftey they have offered. hope this helps someone else starting out with the fun of making anything you can come up with. ps hook up with the facebook support groups great bunch of guys and girls.
The assembly was very easy (I have experience putting together kits for 3d printers and cncs)
The enclosure is nice, but I used a foam air-conditioner seal kit to really prevent the dust to escape from the bottom.
I bought the offline controller, it allows zeroing better than the small controllers other kits have.
The price for the kit is a really good deal in my opinion.
You have to have the right tool for the job. This is a good fit for my milling of foam and waxes,
as it can fly through these and not require a garage to do the work in.
I have made a few minor upgrades to the case to make the door close snuggly in order to prevent dust to escape.
This machine fits my needs for the small scale milling of soft materials with offline control.
This CNC is a great machine for someone who’s never done CNC before. It has a few minor issues (Instruction manual are a bit weak) But I was able to get my test print running pretty quickly. Now as previous reviews have mentioned, Candle can be a bit wonky, especially if you’ve never done CNC before. But you just have to make sure you follow the instruction in the book. And if there’s an error, hit google or the facebook group up. This machine is not for the faint of heart . But if your willing to put the time into it, the only regret you’ll have is not getting the 4040XE because you’ll want a bigger machine!
This cnc is ok for light work in wood and plastics. Has a lot of play in the head (spindle) unit so would not make tolerance type of straight cuts. Think great way to start learning and doing small projects.
Enclosure is nice to keep the cutting chips inside. I added a clip light to help with being able to see.
This machine is great quality, and is practically ready to use out of the box! You don’t need to be a tech genius, an engineer, or a graphic designer to be able to use this machine. It’s very easy to assemble and even easier to use. The user manual is beautifully illustrated, easy to follow, and written in perfect English! There are tons of extra’s available for this machine such as the off-line controller, the CNC bench vise, and the flip jig. You can literally create anything!
Absolutely awesome product. Easy to assemble. Well built. Works great and tech support was incredible. I couldn’t get the machine to run at first. Went online and talked to tech support. Turned out the emergency switch had been tripped. Solved in minutes! Definitely great for beginners!
I chose the FoxAlien 3018 Desktop CNC as the first CNC for my small shop, to use on many hobby’s and projects.
It shipped well packaged and showed up with everything in good shape, had good, easy to follow instructions, and had a very clear colour coded wiring diagram, which was very helpful.
The materials used seem to be of high quality, the aluminum extrusions are very clean and rigid, and the acrylic for the enclosure is clear and was shipped with a protective plastic covering it.
It also came with a full set of V Carve bits of different sizes to use.
I haven’t completed a video review of a project, but I will post that soon. I’ll be using Easel as the software. So far have had no issues getting the machine to communicate with Easel.
Very happy with this purchase. As an added note, FoxAlien has a very active Facebook group with good support from its members, and from FoxAlien themselves.
The set up was rather frustrating and took quite a bit of time to get it set up properly. I had to get my husband to help me get it set up properly. For the price I would have expected a bit better installation but it’s not terrible just off a bit. It is completely enclosed which is probably smart for beginners like me. Since I am completely new to a cnc machine I am still learning how to use it and what all it can do.
This thing had me laughing through the whole assembly process. It took about 2 hours of tinkering with the adjustments to put this together. The acrylic panel mounts are out of alignment so I had to move them around to get a good seal and fitment. The pre-drills of the front panel are so small that they actually cracked slightly around the holes when I screwed the hinges on. More aesthetics than anything, but still, not expecting poor workmanship on something priced this high. The magnet is so weak that it doesn’t keep the door shut, had to add a neodymium magnet to make it work. Oh and also, foam, so much foam in the packaging. Other than that, the instructions are well written, pictures makes it super clear and straight forward.
Once all that was done, I booted it up and the machine was stuck in the alarm status, nothing would move. The way to get it going is to home the machine. It comes with 4 clamps which are a pain to run with on smaller work pieces. I saw in a video that there was vices available, which seem like the wiser option but at a hefty 80$. The V bits included are good enough to get you started, sizes are 0.70, 0.75, 0.80 x4, 0.85, 1.00, 1.200 and the last one is unmarked so I’m not sure what it is. So far I am pretty new to CNC and haven’t done much with it aside from engraving wood and a lighter. I believe it’s a good machine to start learning though as it’s not outrageously priced and it can do quite a bit given you have the correct bits. The fact that there’s an enclosure is perfect for beginners like me as I won’t have flying shards going about the room if something were to snap.
This thing is friggin awesome! Took me a couple minutes to figure out how to use it and still learning the software parameters but I’m a complete newb at this and only had it for a few hours. Things turning out great. Only complaint is the screws that connect the motor to the spirals came loose after a few and it quit moving. Make sure you tighten the screws on the blue connector pieces before use. Requires a T8 bit.
