This works fine. But the jack is little too big for my Martin.
The battery dies quickly if you keep it plugged in all the time even your amp is switched off.
This pickup brought my old epiphone to life. now it’s my main guitar for live performance. Highly recommend.
Only thing is it doesn’t have a volume control, just a fade dial between the piezo and the microphone. Honestly though, I don’t really mind not having volume control.
This is my first bad review on Amazon since I joined Prime. The bad review is for Amazon handling, not the product features or quality.
I ended up replacing this product three times. The first time I got an ope3n box with a damaged product. I happens. Not a big deal. I returned the product and ordered it again. The second delivery included again an open box with a used product. This time there was a thank you sticker on the box thanking me for agreeing to “give the product a second life”. The problem was that I purchased a NEW product at the price of a new product! I don’t think this is legal. So I called Amazon support and asked to return the product and get a NEW product in a sealed box as it should be. The support rep promised to add a note to the order for the Amazon warehouse. The third delivery came in an open box with no instructions and the pouch was missing. I surrendered but I am not happy. I am all for selling items in open boxes but they should sell at a lower price and the buyer should have to choice to buy them or buy a new product. What Amazon is doing here is not OK and that is why I gave 3 stars for the “Value For Money”.
Now to the product itself that is great! It produces a beautiful 3D sound that I absolutely love. Before the Fishman I used the build in pick-up. This Fishman is a complete different world. The blended microphone Adds the wooden echoing sound to the typical flat sound coming from the magnets. The range captured and amplified is also impressive with deep bases and clear highs.
The installation is simple but tricky. I bought this product and not the competition because I did not want to spend hundred of Dollars on a professional installation. For a non-professional installer like me the instructions were not sufficient. There is one sentence about fine-tuning the high and low sounds. I tried to follow this one sentence to my best understanding but did not hear any difference in the sound. The pickup plug is designed for in guitar placement and thus, does not have a none intrusive option. I had to improvise. All in all, I would recommend this product to anyone who loves the acoustic sound.
I have a couple of violins that dont have a pickup. This is an easy way to play amplified without making any modifications to the instrument. Id prefer a 1/4 inch jack, but I’m making this work.
Excellent. Installed into a favourite acoustic guitar for some upcoming shows this is a fabulous pickup system utilising a very slim pick up in the sound hole that doesn’t compromise the acoustic properties of the guitar and a microphone in the body. You can blend these together to tweak your sound. The sound quality is far superior to a Piezo system, which I personally dislike for its toppy unnatural sound. There are cheaper pickups on the market but this is really worth installing. I read someone here complaining about the volume output. That is nonsense it works great directly inputted into an amp or PA and if you want a bit more control use a floor standing preamp. Great product!
p.s. don’t ask me about fitting, I got someone else to do that!
Purchased this a while back. Installed it in a high end vintage guitar. Works perfectly with a great dynamic response. Can’t wait to get back out gigging with it again.
My Yamaha acoustic guitar (FS72OS) is certainly not top of the range, and I wanted a pick up to enrich its sound and give more volume and projection. I like physically playing the guitar, and especially like the feel of its neck, but its sound really does need augmenting – especially when playing live. The Fishman PRO-REP-103 Rare Earth Blend Pickup gave me exactly what I wanted, and a bit more. Okay, so it can’t magically make an inexpensive guitar sound like a top-notch instrument, but it certainly makes an inexpensive guitar sound absolutely fine – especially in a live performance situation.
Installed this in a OO build. It works well, and has a pleasing natural sound.
I was concerned about mounting it in a smaller bodied acoustic. Buy no worries, all is good.
I always use Fishman rare earth. They give the true sound of the wood
Klingt relative natrlich und lsst sich sehr flexibel einsetzen, einfach anzubringen.
It’s pretty good for what it is. It is NOT a most accurate reproduction of your acoustic. It is more like “converting your acoustic into an electric.” It has warm tone, but it’s not necessarily accurate to the acoustic. You can use the Microphone to get a more realistic sound on the highs, but the lows will be thin. You can use the pickup to get better tone on the lows, but the highs will sound absolutely like an electric guitar not an acoustic guitar. Actually even the lows don’t sound realistic, but they are warm. Best of all is to blend the mic & the pickup, I just keep it smack in the middle most of the time, and fiddled with a few different positions of the mic to get accurate sound without feedback. Basically if you put the mic closer to the strings it sounds more real but you get more feedback.
There’s a couple of things I don’t really like:
#1: Changing the battery is pretty awkward, you basically have to totally uninstall the unit to change them, and they are a weird size. It’s like 3 watch batteries. Why not just put in a AAA? There was enough room for that.
#2: The cord that connects the pickup to the Jack is pretty flimsy, very skinny and not well-shielded or strong. I have a Dean Markley single-coil acoustic pickup and on that thing the cord is literally twice the thickness.
#3: The end of the cord is really awkward, it’s attached to a female jack so you can “permanently install it” I personally would have prefered a male so I can just plug it in but this is minor
#4: It’s pretty annoying that you have to unplug the guitar every time you use it or else you will quickly burn out the battery and have to uninstall it again to change those weird batteries. You see the circuit is active when it is plugged in. I think a little “on/off” switch for $300 would have been nice and convenient, so I don’t have to fumble with the wires constantly and I don’t have to worry about running out of battery. Supposedly those batteries only last 100 hours. Well, that’s about 5 days if you accidentally leave it plugged in.
#5: requires a small screwdriver to install. Not a huge deal, but it’s annoying. You can’t just pop it in and pop it out like you can with the Dean Markely. And since you need to change batteries, you WILL be installing & uninstalling frequently.
I won’t be returning it, but starting to consider just using the Dean Markely again. The sound wasn’t THAT much better with the Fishman, and the Dean Markely installs & uninstalls without any tools, and doesn’t have a battery.
Took 5 minutes to setup. Plays great. Wanted to play my acoustic through speaker and also right into my computer for recording. Did exactly what it was supposed to.
Bought this to use on a 60’s 12 string Framus acoustic that I repaired and refurbished. Works great and much better sound than I expected. Decided to try it on my 2015 Taylor 616CE and WOW!!!!!. Sound is superior to the mic
pickups standard on the Taylor. While their system is good, the Fishman gives a much clearer and improved
voice. WELL WORTH THE MONEY
I own several of these Fishman Rare Earth Blend pickups, and I’ve enjoyed using them for recording and live performances, but I absolutely dread having to change the batteries! For whatever reason, in their infinite wisdom, the engineers at Fishman decided to dedign these units with wrist-watch batteries that have a short shelf life, and incredibly, inexplicably, you must REMOVE the entire pickup from the guitar to replace them. And if your guitar is a high-end instrument that you don’t want to scratch or damage in the process, then you’ll probably need to remove the existing strings as well. In my view, this is an absolutely ridiculous, unnecesary and amateurish design flaw.
A phenomenal acoustic pickup. You get what you pay for. The range of different tones this pickup can give a guitarist (along with outboard Processing) is second to none. Other reviews have stated limitations, like wishing the pickup was wired for stereo output. It is. Plug a TRS cable in, split to two TS and you get each element on a separate channel. Also, another review stated the desire for a volume knob – I don’t view that as a limitation – any number of outboard processors can serve that purpose, and the real estate is much better served for the blend dial.
I was blown away by the reproduction of the natural tone of my guitar the moment I plugged it in. And the fact that if I wanted to I could dial in “all humbucker” is great too, if I feel like sounding like old Dave Matthews.
Very, very happy with this purchase.
Fcil de instalar, suena mucho mejor mi guitarra y estoy contento con mi compra
Hey banjo players! Dont waste your time with these reveiws – they’re mostly irrelevant to the banjo pickup – Bad Amazon! They are mostly for guitar or something else!
These humbucking pickups are good, but expensive, and if you shop around can be cheaper elsewhere! Make sure before you buy that the box contains a small metal foil strip, essential, for fixing to the inside of the head (the banjo head! Silly!) to pickup the heads resonance – get a banjo friendly tech or luthier or even your local banjo specialist (if you’ve got one) to fit it. The pickup can be mounted on most banjos that have an internal rod or rail (or two, is easier) if you’ve no rods inside, speak nicely to your tech!
The Fishman pickup is magnetic and only works well with metal ie steel or steel-cored string but it does make your banjo sound like a…..well…. a banjo!
The sound is wonderful. The pickup cuts out most fret noise while delivering clear, full, rich sound. If I want to hear more string noise or if I want to play some percussion on the guitar, I mix in the mic.
This pickup allows you to blend the tone from the mini-humbucker pickup with the directional condenser mic to achieve the most natural tone possible. I cannot imagine getting a more natural amplified sound of an acoustic guitar without investing significantly more time and money in pickups that require permanent modification (i.e. under-saddle pickups) to my instrument.
Beyond outstanding acoustic performance, the Fishman offers TWO distinct advantages to other pickups:
1. Non-permanent installation enables you to switch it between multiple instruments. I actually purchased additional end-pin jacks and wired a permanent pigtail with mini-xlr connectors into each of my guitars.
2. The pickup will output blended sound when a mono plug is inserted into the endpin jack, but when a TRS (stereo) plug is inserted, it outputs discrete signals from each pickup to separate channels!
I put this in my Martin OMC-16. This is the closest amplified replication of the true sound of my guitar I have ever had! It’s a great pickup that sounds so much better than the under-saddle that was removed. No feedback now! Great product for the price!!!
Currently using this on my Martin OO-28 with great success. Tone is very true to the acoustic guitar. Not as tinny sounding as others I have used in the past. (I go way back to the original Barcus-Berry stuck to the top of the acoustic guitar with putty). Keep the on-board volume control turned all the way up and work out your amp etc. settings from there. I experienced very low susceptibility to feedback this way. In addition, the pickup does not seem to be very sensitive to my touching the cable while the pickup is mounted. I am hanging the cord from the guitar’s soundhole since I don’t want a permanent installation. I am routing the output into a Fender Frontman 65R amp after my pedalboard which most importantly includes an MXR Dyna Comp compressor at the top of the chain. I use a small amount of compression at all times. I am impressed by how well the signal from this pickup can be altered with Chorus, Phase, Delay and a 12-string simulator. Haven’t done much experimentation with distortion but I am adding just a bit of drive on the amp.
Pros:
A great fit for my OM solid spruce/rosewood guitar. Quality pick-up producing a great authentic acoustic guitar sound. One of a few elite pick ups that do a superb job.
When I gave the Fishman pickup to my luthier, he installed it and the unit did not work!!! Fishman told us to return it to the retailer, which I did following a phone call to Amazon. They sent me a new one immediately and gave me a shipping label to return the non working one, which I was real happy about. The pickup sounds great!! Definitely picks up the “banjo” sound which has been confirmed by several listeners, while playing out.
I like it so much I bought a second one to replace an older pickup in another banjo. Pick on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soooo glad I decided on this pickup. Was super easy to install and it just sounds gorgeous!
Doesn’t sound as good as expected .Needs to be wired stereo so the Mic and magnetic pickup can use separate eq .
I installed this myself. I had to use a soldering iron, but it has worked great. I’ve had no feedback issues. I use it with a L & R Baggs pre amp and I can plug directly into a PA.
I’ve always just played acoustic instruments, but I’ve got a performance coming up and need to be able to amplify my banjo. I asked a professional banjo playing friend for his advice and he recommended this Fishman banjo pickup. I was hoping to be able to install it myself, but when they say they recommend professional installation, they’re not kidding – it was beyond the scope of my knowledge and the tools I have, so I had it done at a local shop. Anyway, it sounds great.
Had to purchase this pickup because my Ovation’s pickup developed problems and I needed a quick fix. It works so well, I’m not sure if I will get the original Ovation pickup fixed.
I’m really happy with the sound of this via a Fishman preamp, but not straight. The only difficulty was fitting the bridge which took a long time.
I’ve been a two pickup guy for a long time. This sounds great. I’ve got it on two of my guitars (a 6 and a 12).
I’ve been looking for an Acoustic Guitar pick up for live use for a very long long time. I’ve tried K&K, LR Baggs dual source, lyric, m1 active… and this is the closest to a Mic’d guitar sound with without feedback. Here’s the pick up in action (youtu.be/MhM7zNuSerk)
Quality sound. Bracket for holding plug needed adapting. Something to be aware of is that you will need a pre-amp component. I use the one on my PA system. Makes it hard to adjust volume. There is a Fishman component that does this.
Warm, natural tone. Much fuller, vowel-like tone on single note lines.
Great sounding pick up only flaw i have found is the batteries could be secured better as i had one fall out mid gig not ideal. Fallen out agai
This is a superb product – not cheap – but you pays your money and reap the rewards.
Really like the sound i get with this pickup. It brings out the dynamics very well with my picking attack. Use it with a Martin HD28.
Brilliant, no hum (obviously) and good sound, though sound not quite as great as a single coil rare earth.
It really has a good acoustic sound. It is true that I have to put volume really high to use it, but in my only 15w amp sounds great.
Don’t worry about the type of sound, you can always use the amp Equalizer to modify that. I put more treble for some songs and more bass for others for example, that’s not an issue.
I choose this one over the L.R Baggs just because this one has no feedback, and I prefer de Humbucker pick ups.
Really easy to install, it doesn’t bother you when playing, and ir really captures a good acoustic sound, not that electric sound most pick ups have.
This is a safe purchase.
War zuerst skeptisch aber der Fishman macht genau das was er soll. Den Klang einer Akustik Gitarre so abbilden wie sie klingt.
Lediglich das Output Level ist ein wenig schwach, aber mit DI Box ist das auch kein Problem.
othing wrong with the product, but simply did not fit my guitar so I had to return it.
Excellent pick up for acoustic guitar. Easy to fit, simple to use and produces a high quality sound. Perfect for recording and public performance. I would highly recommend this for any budding musician. Money well spent.
After experiencing a few challenges with the Piezo pickup in my Takamine G Series (a mismatch of volume on each string, sometimes the B string would be over loud, while the top E was inaudible, then after a string change the A would be too quiet and so on and so on) i decided to install the Fishman rare earth, it was dead easy to fit, is unobtrusive and sounds wonderful. The first gig with it made me aware of what had been missing in the past, i noticed a warmer tone with a more percussive attack, in fact i was listening so closely to the new and improved sound that i totally forgot all about the lyrics that i was supposed to be singing.
Top top que du bonheur sur ma Taylor big baby
I’m glad I finally spent the money for this. I play an acoustic Ovation 12-string in church worship, and have used a variety of both passive and powered soundhole pickups for decades. This is it, Powerful sound that perfectly picks up the acoustic sound with no tinny or other distortions over the whole range of strings. It can be mounted via end-pin or just cord out of the sound hole, which is what I’ve done so far. The cord is actually smaller and less obtrusive than other soundhole cords. The pickup does protrude a bit higher than other pickups I’ve used, but an adjustment on the high-string end of the bridge – maybe a sixteenth of an inch – lifted the high strings clear. Normally I keep them barely off the frets. This was the best thing I ever did for my Ovation!
I’ve been using the Fishman rare earth single coil pick up for the last few years and now moving to the humbucker has made my guitar sound a little warmer and background buz I was getting on big stage systems has gone can’t rate it high enough
Perfect pickup for my Martin OM-28. I did not do the permanent installation, and I like that it is easy to put on and take off. I use this with a loop pedal and I can now play my own acoustic guitar backups to fiddle music!
seems to work well. Not as much volume as I’d like. the mic doesn’t seem stable. Had to adjust the cork pads as they were too thick causing the top string to buzz out. has a pre-amp so a plus.
Best acoustic pick up I’ve ever heard! Superb quality and easily installed.

It took some effort and Youtube but it sounds beautiful.
I had to get rid of the adjusting screw knobs and grind down the screws to lower the bridge enough for the strings to be at the right height from the frets. You also need to cut the grooves in the bridge for the strings. Used my old bridge as a pattern.
I also had to wrap something around the patch plug to keep it from flopping around in the clip that holds it to the instrument.
Nice sound hole pick up ,installed in my 1981 d45 Guild has the sound of the guitar.
The pick-up has been the best purchase I have made since buying my fiddle. A previous pick-up I had been using didn’t allow my fiddle to be distinct among the sound of other instruments in the band, but now the true sound of my fiddle can be heard clearly as we play.
Amazing pickup. Being able to blend the 2 different pickups is lovely. I have it installed on my Martin D15M. My only issue with it is that it is a little on the quiet side when plugged into my amp or sound card for direct recording which unfortunately means turning up the gain considerably and then getting a bit of a hiss.
What I got was exactly how it read- result is happy custome
Great deal, great product, super fast shipping!! A+ all the way.
Easy install awesome sound with NO background noise. Worth the money 100%
Update: After a few months I still think this is one of the best sounding acoustic pickups you can get. For me…… & I think this maybe because I leave it plugged into the amp……..I go through batteries every 3 weeks or so. Also be careful not to put too much pressure on the small plastic tabs that hold the batteries in line. They will break easily.
Still cannot believe the sound am I used to be a real snob about using a mic only for my acoustic.
Only problem I have with this pickup was trying to get the extra wire secured down so it wasn’t clunking around inside my guitar. The little sticker ties they provide stuck for a few minutes tops. Problem resolved eventually and I’m loving this thing.
This is a great sounding pickup in a Martin HD-28. But I was too retarded to figure out that to install it in my guitar. There is a black plastic spacer that needs to be removed from the endpin jack threads. The spacer is there for using it without installing it permanently but the jack won’t fit in the guitar endpin hole with the spacer in place. So I contacted Fishman about this issue and they stuck with me through email until I figured it out. I give strong appreciation for the good customer service. But as for the pickup, this sounds fantastic. Clear, bright, balanced. Better than the passive PRO NEO version which I also tried before getting this. Definitely worth the extra money.
This is the first acoustic pick up I have tried, so much easier than messing about setting up a mike set up plus it it gives sound options that the mike doesn’t, I like a mix of about 60% humbuck but it’s nice to have the option to change that. Using with a Roland AC33 and really likeing the sounds.
This isn’t going to be a perfect solution for everyone, but the sounds quality is really good and it stays out of the way without altering your guitar. I put it in a Martin auditorium acoustic and it’s exactly what I wanted. Since I use a multi-fx pedal I can do my noisegate/tuner/compressor/eq there without having to alter my beloved guitar.
Sounds great but I had an issue where my batteries corroded and left the thing inoperable. Could be related to my humidifier to leaving my guitar case near a window (I live by the ocean). In any case it’s awesome when it works. Very natural sound that works recorded or live.
ARRIVED BEFORE TIME AND IN PERFECT CONDITION. THE FISHMAN RARE EARTH HAS A GREAT SOUND ON A GIBSON ACOUSTIC GUITAR. FIT JUST RIGHT IN THE SOUNDHOLE. I LOVED THE SOUND. WILL BE TRYING ON MY OTHER ACOUSTIC GUITARS.
I’m using this on multiple acoustic guitars for low-level recordings and a few minor gigs. Compared to less expensive Dean Markley and Seymour Duncan pickups, the Fishman is clearer and much better balanced. It is especially good at reproducing the sound of the low E string, which the other pickups don’t handle nearly as well. Finger picking, strumming, whatever, this thing sounds great! I did try it on a 12-string and was not as impressed, but that is really a different animal and shouldn’t be held against it. Highly recommended!
Great sound. Fishman nailed that. However, it’s a really primitive design, and the device looks like it was made in someone’s garage. The box it arrived in was made for a different device with grooves to receive other pieces of equipment. I initially assumed that there was something missing.
Thankfully my banjo has two rods. If it hadn’t, the instruction recommended how to go off and make wooden fillers to compensate so as to fit a single rod banjo. For pennies, Fishman could have included some little grommets that would have served those with single rod banjos. It would have been a nice touch, as would have been a battery, given the price of the device.
Finally, fitting the pickup was fiddly and required soldering, and the connection accessories could have been a lot better.
I can’t remove this from my current banjo without dissolving and re-soldering the welds, and that’s just nuts.
There should be no soldering required.
A few small changes to the design / ergonomics could be made easily and cheaply and this pickup would be a 5/5 without doubt.
I like what the Fishman Rare earth does for my 1962 Guild acoustic guitar. I also was surprised at the built in volume control. Thank you and I will be in touch with you for future purchases. Sincerely, Frank Thibe
Slightly awkward to fit. It requires a bit of fiddly soldering and customising. Great sound though. Much better than the transducer I was using before.
Very impressed with the sound of this. A warm acoustic tone that does the guitar justice – and easy to fit. It’s exceeded my expectations.
fishman picups, are the best on the market .I use them in Guitars and violins as well, very good product. i well buy more
Sounds amazing! the sound is clear and precise. Recommend this to anyone who is gigging all the time. Very happy
I got this pickup so I could run my banjo through my effects pedals. Banjos, by their nature are harsh, and amplified, even more so. I like what I can do with a looper and reverb.
I am very impressed but it will feedback which apparently it is not suppoesed to. Still better than fighting with a mic.
I used a Baggs M1A for about a year before I switched to this. i heard lots of people say that the Baggs was the better pickup but, as soon as I used this, I was sold. The Baggs may sound better in some guitars but, in mine, it’s not nearly as clear or as bright as this. At first I tried the Fishman single coil, which also sounded great, but I had to get the humbucker after experiencing too may problems with 60 cycle hum.
Great pickup, combined with the Fishman Aura Spectrum D.I. you will have an excellent experience. Even the pick up by itself into a quality amp will make you happy.
Easy fit onto my guitar. Produces a great tone. I use it at gigs all the time and I’m very impressed by the clarity of sound. It delivers a mellow tone to a high standard.
use this pick up on all my instruments. love the sound I get especially on my Banjos very popluar with all my musician friends
Primarily an acoustic guitar player, I’ve tried a few pickups – humbuckers and single coils of various makes. Thought that Fishman Rare Earths were a bit of an extravagance pricewise. How could they be that much better than the cheaper alternatives? Well they can and they are, in my opinion. Clear as a bell across ALL the strings at a uniform volume and clarity. In my experience of other pickups, the second string (B string) is somewhat louder than the others. Not in the case of the Fishman rare earth. I’m pleased.
I went for this pick up after hearing Simon Nicol from Fairport Convention. The sound was fantastic and I’ve not changed my mind since my one arrived. Superb purchase.
put it in my Fender dreadnaught and only wish i have held out for the the next step up in quality with the mic as well… Love it to death, had it pertinently installed and love the sound and the versatility. the built in volume knob it a GREAT tough. I could go on, but there are reviews on you tube that will do a better Job than here.
Read other users’ reviews before ordering this. Really easy to attach and easy to use. Better than buying a mediocre electric acoustic guitar as a second instrument if you already have a good acoustic guitar that you want to play through an amp. Would definitely recommend this product.
Fishman Rare Earth Blend Pickup is a perfect choise for an acoustic guitar. I love it!
Amozon delivery was very sharp and constantly updated.
Very happy about my purchase..!!
The Fishman banjo pickup was fine but I did not find it easy to fit and needed a specialist to install. However, this was the recommendation with the product.
I like the fact that it can be “partially” installed with the cord coming out of the sound hole or it can be easily installed on a more permanent basis by cutting the cord to length and running it inside the guitar body through the end pin hole (which will have to be enlarged a bit). Either way, once plugged in, it sounds great. This pickup maintains the great acoustic sound of my guitar, a Blueridge BR-160. I installed some Fishman “under the saddle” pickups in a few Martin guitars and this pickup sounds just as good, if not better. If you don’t mind the pickup visible in the sound hole, this is the way to go. Another nice thing about it is the ease of changing out the batteries as compared to the undersaddle type pickups where the batteries are attached to the inside body of the guitar.
My grandson is an amazing guitarist and he needed a pickup. When I got this for him, he couldn’t quit smiling or playing. Amazing difference!
Just incredible…. very very good one. Much better then several that come already with the guitars. . . . .
I had first ordered the Neo D passive pickup but it just didn’t have enough volume. I had to turn the amp all the way up just to hear it at a decent level. With the Rare Earth active pickup it’s at a quarter volume and it picks up every nuance of the strings. Incredible sound!!!! You won’t be disappointed with this one!!!!!
I have been looking for this particular item on other music supply sights and no could come close to this price!
great mic, arrived in time the sound I get with this mic is as close to acoustic as it ever was
As with all products, some reviews are critical and some are full of praise. Based on the high ratings and several reviews from pros mentioning how good the sound was, I went the extra from around $79 to get this one, and I love it so much that I shortly bought a second, so I could put one in each of my two beautiful sounding Martin acoustics. I play them through a Roland Mobile Cube (the little short and wide one you can find here), and am extremely pleased with the sound as well as what I can get out of the Roland. It has several choices of effects, including plain acoustic, electric, over drive, distortion, chorus, delay, and reverb, and PLENTY loud enough for the small place I live in; even better with phones on!
Mounting tip: You can probably mount it without pulling the strings, unless you want to change them. I had just put on new sets and wanted to keep them on. Just loosen the tension up as much as you can without the string popping out of the tuning pegs. You may be able to reach your arm through the sound hole to mount the output jack; I did on the six string. But the 12 string was more difficult, so after loosening the strings, I carefully pulled out the pin and removed the string, put it aside, then re-inserted in when the job was done.
For drilling, use the stepped type drill bit which will drill multiple hole sizes, chucking it (for the Martins) so the drill just catches about 3/8″ to 1/2″ of the shank; otherwise, the drill chuck will hit the guitar before the drill goes all the way through. You will need to go all the way up to 1/2″ hole size. DO NOT TRY TO USE A REGULAR or any other type bit, as you will almost certainly split the wood. Not nice!
BE SURE TO PUT TAPE ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR GUITAR around the hole, so if you do slip, the damage will be limited; and go nice-and-slow, with constant speed, on a the LOW speed setting for a cordless. Put a small bit of Beeswax on the outside of the bit and the cutting edge to reduce friction, “grabbing,” and make for a MUCH better cut.
Here’s the tricky part: find an old wooden knitting needle, wooden dowel, a very long bamboo chopstick, about 14″ long. At the business end, you want 1/4″ diameter and of course, smaller than 1/2″ at the large end. With everything ready, unwind the pickup wire fully, letting the pickup dangle on the table top (hope you put a towel under there), and with one hand put the output jack through the sound hole. Now with the other hand, insert the 1/4″ knitting needle, dowel, whatever, through the hole you drilled and up towards the Sound hole, where you will insert it, while twisting slightly, into the pickup jack – the part that will go through the hole. Smoothly pull the knitting needle or dowel, etc, back through the hole (you did remember to remove the nuts which hold it in the hole before starting, right?), and twist slightly to remove the jack from the dowel.
This turned out to be so easy that I did it several times until I had the exact length of the mounting nuts perfect. So, tighten down the assembly with your fingers (no locktite, please), mount the pickup in the hole, then shorten up the cord and wrap it up with a Velcro type, multi-use fastener for easy removal and battery replacement. Put the strings back in, tighten the tuners, tune – be sure to adjust the sound level to “high” as the manual suggests – then plug and PLAY!
I bought this to replace a piezo under-saddle pickup as I had many problems with it. The pickup is well made and fits perfectly in my guitar, the sound produced is very nice and not overpowering. I put the pickup dead straight in the guitar as this sounded the best, they clearly have fine tuned this pickup as many others I have tried needed to be placed at funny angles to get an even balance. The fact it is a stacked humbucker is great, preventing it from dampening the acoustic sound much (I can’t hear any difference). Just make sure to screw the screws down otherwise the can negatively affect the magnetic field of the pickup, I had a dead string caused by this and was thinking the pickup was broken, just something to make sure you do.
Everything was great though, I recommend it!
I recently bought a Martin D-18 and never intended to have it electrified, but love the guitar so much I wanted to use it live. In the past, I have always gone for Headway pickups, but this means drilling the area under the saddle and my guitar has the vintage style saddle that sits in a slot that’s open at both ends. This makes adjusting the saddle in any way a very skilful operation – skills I do not possess.
So I looked around and read some very positive reviews about this soundhole mounted unit and thought I’d give it a go.
This is the first Fishman pickup I have ever bought and my immediate impression was positive; well packaged, detailed fitting instruction and a very solid feel to it (apart from the flimsy arm the mic is attached to – all the other comments about this are spot on). Initially, I was going to just have the wire dangling from the soundhole, rather than fit the thing more permanently, but I had nightmare visions of standing on the lead and ripping the front out of the guitar so decided to fit the endpin jack.
The instructions talk about using reamers and stuff to enlarge the hole, but if you have the correct final drill size, it’s relatively easy to use increasing drill sizes as a series of pilot holes until you get to the final size (half inch, I think, but don’t quote me). After shortening the lead wire – leaving enough spare to remove the pickup to change the batteries – I just used a length of solder wire to reach through the end hole and pull the jack through. Once tightened and with the decorative jack surround in place, you’re done.
By the way, StewMac.com do a clever little device the allows you to replace the jack with a standard endpin if you decide to de-electrify at some point.
Plugging in to my Headway preamp the tone is good if lacking in treble a bit. EQ adjustment soon fixes this and it’s possible to get a very pleasing tone blending a little mic with the pickup and perfectly good for an amplified acoustic (which I never find truly authentic sounding, but good just the same).
This was a good solution to electrify my Martin, but I do wonder if they’re worth the extra you pay for it having the mic.
I have installed one of these into my old 70’s Yamaha acoustic guitar. It took me about 30 minutes to install it myself. It is wired to a metal endpin-jacksocket. So you need to replace your existing endpin with this one.
It sounds amazing! You can blend the internal mic with the magnetic pickup using a little wheel on the pickup itself. The magnetic pickup is louder than the mic so I find blending a little mic into the magnetic sound is just right.
And it also works in stereo. So you can plug in a stereo Y splitter cable to 2 monos and get the mic and magnetic sounds separately. I found a cable specially for this online.
I highly recommend this pickup. Anything cheaper than this wont have as good a sound. I could have bought a cheaper pickup but i figured this one was worth it. And I was right.
Works very well. Easy to install. The sound is very natural and balanced. Only wish the cord was not so long.
I have been playing electro-acoustic and acoustic steel string guitars for nearly 20 years. I am also a sound engineer and a producer, and am extremely critical about sound overall, specifically critical about acoustic instrument’s sound. I have found that most acoustic guitars with pickups sound terribly artificial, so the past 2 guitars I have bought have been Martins with no pickups. About a year ago I began playing in a band and needed to amplify my steel string, so after researching a bit I decided on this pickup. I was especially drawn by this pickup’s ability to blend both a mic and a magnetic pick up. It brings out the best of my instrument. I like to set the knob to halfway between both, which gives me a very natural, beautiful sound. When feedback becomes an issue with the mic, I simply turn the knob to magnetic pick up, and still the guitar sounds beautiful.
The goose neck does move out of place, but only when moving the guitar from place to place. I haven’t found this to be an issue.
I highly recommend this pick up.
I like them. I have 5 of them. I first got the single coil and had noise. Fishman offered a discount and trade to the humbucker and so on.
I have a seagull cedarwood acoustic, in which the pickup gave out a few months back after 10 years of wear, tear and travel. I removed the pickup and began hunting for a decent replacement. The Fishman Rare Earth series seem to have almost universally positive reviews, and although the ‘blended’ model is thought to be the best, it is not currently available on amazon. The humbucker model is thought of as 2nd best, and I must say I think it is excellent. It is easy to install, and sounds great, giving a very well rounded EQ, not the overdriven mid-heavy sound of a standard seagull pickup, or the laser-beam-through-the-brain treble overkill of an electro-taylor, but just a very natural, believable acoustic sound, which is versatile enough to be tweakable in any EQ direction once it hits the amp or mixing board. Good stuff, which I would definitely reccomend.
I purchased the fishman rare earth humbucking pickup largely based on the reviews I read on amazon and other forums. I must say that I am extremely pleased with the sound. I am using in on my Guild D-4 and playing through a fender acoustisonic amp. a little reverb and a little delay and it sounds amazing. Previously I used a basic Dean Markley pickup and it buzzed pretty bad. No buzz or hum with this one. I would 100% recommend this pickup.
I live on an the Big Island of Hawaii. Play professionaly (guitar). No one on this island had the Fishman acoustic pick-up. Honolulu either. Lead player said go to Amazon..I did, and 4 days later it was on my guitar..Great pick-up, Great service..They paid the shipping..Aloha, Steve
This pickup is sweet! You get a nice, crisp sound out of it. I personally play it with my Martin guitar in a rather large church. It is perfect for that.
EDIT: Nearly three years later, being put through extensive use, I’ve had to replace the batteries only once.
easy to install. amazing sound, much better than the under saddle piezo that it replaced.its not cheap but it is one of those purchases that you wont regre
