FLIR TG267 Thermal Camera

What is MSX?

MSX

MSX adds visible light details to thermal images.

FLIR MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) adds visible light details to thermal images in real time for greater clarity, embedding edge and outline detail onto thermal readings. Unlike image fusing (merging of a visible light and thermal image), MSX does not dilute the thermal image or decrease thermal transparency.

Thermal imagers with MSX capabilities actually have two cameras—a thermal imager and a visible light camera (i.e. a typical digital camera). Every time you take a picture, both a thermal image and a visible image are captured simultaneously. Built-in software extracts key visible image elements—outlines, words, numbers, and other high-contrast edge details–and adds them to the thermal image. This helps give the image definition and makes it easier to tell what you’re looking at.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI think they sent me someone else’s return, USB cable included will not fit anywhere in this thing. Sent a mini and it takes a C. Looks like everything was already opened. The app to transfer pics is absolute junk and will not even connect to this device. Just take a pic of the screen with your phone. Way less headaches.

The reviews about image overlay not lining up are correct but you can fix this easily in settings. Other than that it works exactly as advertised. I can literally see the studs behind the wall board and air leaks for days. Once you figure it out it’s point and shoot and works every time. Awesome that I can change the color filter, each one shows you something new.

The greatest feature of this tool is that I can hand it off to clients during home inspections and it takes no experience to operate. The clients love having something to do and it keeps them busy while I inspect.

Cannot be used outside, indoors only.
Needs some form of light to overlay the image onto. If you use this in a dark room, it’s near enough useless.

Is it worth the price? Don’t think so.

I bought this one to trace heating problems in my condo, solved the mystery that night. I’m surprised how often I reach for it to check other situations. It ended a lot of debates as to what is going on.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our Usersice unit. carry every day for my housing maintenance now. easy download to computer with included usb cable. here’s pics from inside of water leak in the roof can see the joists and the warmer wet spots. it does “freeze” for a sec if you move to a view with something hotter or colder than the previous as it re-syncs the color range to the new temps. just wait a sec and it resets the view colors. the real image overlay is nice but wish it was adjustable other than all or nothing. the overlay can be paralax adjusted so it will line up right for close or far other reviews didnt go deep enough into the menu to find that i guess. would be nice to have a cover for the lens but at least its recessed and the included case is nice. havent tried the thermocouple yet to calibrate as it reads within 3-5F as is but that was a factor in buying choice. last pic of hot water from sink measured 120F with calibrated thermometer and 120F with the FLIR.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a pretty intuitive tool – meaning I could use it straight out of the box without spending an hour reading the instructions first. But that’s also the problem – there are no detailed instructions, probably because the functionality is pretty basic.
I wanted a camera that could tell me where my house was leaking heat. From doing a bit of research online, I knew that it was important for the outside temperature to be in single digits and for the inside temp to be significanly higher so I cooked my entire house up for hours on a cold evening before testing this. While the camera was showing up the underfloor heating coils quite nicely, identified older double glazing from new and showed what appeared to be areas that were colder than others inside the house.
But when I stepped outside, the entire house was a solid bright orange as seen in the picture. Zero distinction between different areas of the house, what was more confusing was the fact that the trees were also the same colour / temperature.
So this suggests that my house is either letting all of the heat out or none – neither of which I know to be true. I think this device is perfectly capable of doing the indoor stuff and probably great for the electrics application but it sadly wasn’t doing what I needed it to do. I was hoping I could avoid having to fork out a thousand pounds for one of the higher end ones but it seems that’s the only option. Paying someone (who knows what they’re doing) for a survey suddenly does not seem that expensive any more.

4.0 out of 5 stars great indoors but not up to the job outdoors

In diesem Fall bitte keine Panik.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersIt’s much better than the ad description. Mine came with a padded holster-like carrying case, shoulder strap, wrist strap, charging cable, and a thermocouple. The thermocouple plugs into an otherwise covered opening in the top of the tool. Others claimed their’s didn’t have one. Mine did. Far nicer than the old C2 I had. Almost instant refresh rate. Fully intuitive. This is a very nice camera.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBought for some diy home energy survey to find thermal anomalies in the house and where insulation issues could be for known cold areas .
Pro: quality build , feels solid and rugged, rubber outer to it, good thermal image shows good detail and easy to identify hot / cold spots , good setting options and has bluetooth to wireless send photos taken, MSX tech is worth it much better image .

Con: no thermal scale on screen just central target showing temperature at that point, no min max temp shown on screen, screen bit leggy but not to bad issue ,

I include a comparison photos showing this flir and a HTi-19 320×240 unit. Although the hti had superior ir resolution spec, the flir image was superior in my opinion and showed a lot more detail thermally, flir iron colour for thermal image is the best also.

For what I use it for this flir model is great . A more professional use would need a higher spec flir.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality clear thermal image

Working in residential and comercial HVAC I need to know the temperature of rooms, equipment, and air.
The TG276 has good screen images and accurate temperature readings. The more illuminated the room the clearer the image on the TG276. Dark rooms lead to low quality images but the thermal gun does have a forward pointing flash light.

TG276. Good quality images and accurate temperatures.

I never knew I needed a thermo-imaging measuring thing but now I do. Was able to go around the house and find all of the heat escaping the house when very cold. WIll do the same in the summer. I won’t do anything about it but at least I now know why the heating bill is high. I also could see where the cat walked across the carpet but still does not register if the cat is plotting my demise. probably is. I lock the door at night. I should check if it sees the thermal paw prints on the doorknob!

    POSITIV:
    * Bedienung weitestgehend selbsterklrend.
    * Zuschaltbarer Laser-Punkt zur einfacheren Positionierung, auch wenn der wegen des Parallaxenfehlers bei mir auf etwa 1m Entfernung ca. 5-10cm neben dem Messpunkt liegt (wie aber im Handbuch auch bereits beschrieben ist).
    * Licht, falls man im (fast) Dunkeln arbeiten muss.
    * Die MSX Technik, die das IR-Bild mit Kontrastpunkten aus dem normalen Kamerabild bereinander legt (was zugegebener Maen nicht immer perfekt passt, aber -fr mich- ausreichend klappt).
    * Verschiedene Farbmodelle lassen sich fr die Temperaturanzeige whlen.
    * Sehr stabiles und gutes Gehuse. Schutztasche, Handschlaufe und Schultergurt (fr die Tasche) dabei.
    * Einfach -wie USB-Laufwerk- am PC auszulesende Bilder.

    NEGATIV:
    * Die App und die Bluetoothanbindung. Ja, fr ein immer hin ber 400 teures Gert ist die Android-App eine echte Zumutung. Verbindung klappt nur auf mehrmalige Versuche, Bedienung und Funktionen vllig unverstndlich und Erklrung im Handbuch mehr als drftig. Dafr einen vollen Punkt Abzug, das ist in der Praxis nicht wirklich verwendbar.
    * Nur ein Messpunkt, anders als andere Messgerte, die oft mehrere Punkte zeigen (z.B. heiester Punkt, kltester Punkt). Fr mich aber vllig ausreichend.
    * Und da die Kamera -hnlich einer im sichtbaren Lichtbereich- die Helligkeit und Kontraste und damit vor allem die angezeigten Farben immer an die vorhandene Wrmeabstrahlung anpasst, wre zumindest eine Anzeige der kltesten Temperatur (im Bild dunkelblau bis Schwarz) und der hellsten Temperatur (hellgelb bis wei) interessant. Beim Bild der Sitzheizung z.B. stellt das dunkle Violett ca. 22 da, das Hellgelb etwa 30. Bei dem Bild des Gefrierschranks ist das dunkle Violett ca. -16 bis -18. Eben je nach Gesamtspektrum skaliert. Deshalb wre da ein ‘von – bis’ in Form einer kleinen Legende am Rand schon interessant.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe screen is a decent size, it’s clear and the quality is good. Fast boot, takes about 7-10 seconds and there’s plenty of options in the menu including calibration type features and a range of difference heat map modes.

I tested the temperature with a boiling kettle and it’s very accurate. The unit itself feels sturdy as well and comes with a MicroSD card for saving images which can be done by simply pulling the trigger.

There’s also a laser beam option for precise measuring, but you get a target overlay in the screen anyway so I never use the laser – but could be handy if in a tight spot where you can’t see the screen and you could use the laser and pull the trigger to take a screenshot.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI’ve been wanting a thermal camera for a while. The first one arrived with shipping damage. I ordered a hard backed, foam padded case from that huge outdoor store. It was half as much as I found here and they show the size in the listing.

The image is a little small, but it does the job well. The on/off button has to be held down for ten seconds or more. It’s a little annoying, but doable. The images help me in my diagnosis and the screen shows the temp which is helpful. I use this in my laundromat to diagnose machines and in my electronics repair hobby.

I replaced an ignitor on a dryer, turned it on and before I could verify it was working by touch, I could see on the Flir that it was already heating up.

I tried to use it on my OLD home looking for air leaks, but couldn’t find anything. I probably need to get much closer to windows and doors. I was assuming I could see heat coming out from 20-30 feet away and I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersOrdered the unit and when it arrived it turns out that the actual thermal camera has been replaced with a cheap (used&dirty) remote temperature reader, not a thermal camera. This must have been someone’s return when they just kept the expensive camera and replaced it with some garbage product. Then the returned item was sent to me?

Anyway, after contacting customer service, Amazon sent a replacement which was in brand-new sealed box as expected, and the actual camera works great.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this to do some science in the testing of a project I am working on.

It is also useful for various DIY tasks such as seeing where joists are behind plasterboard and seeing where drafts are coming from (e.g. where a door seal may need replacing).

It will even clearly show you whether a device is on and in standby, rather than completely switched off. Even low power devices raise the temperature enough such that they glow clearly against the background!

Do not be fooled by superficially similar devices that might be cheaper. This shows you the visible edges of things in the field of view, to help identify where you are pointing at. Most other devices of this type just show you a blurry field of colours, and it is hard to pinpoint what you are lookng at (measuring from).

Oh, and I almost forgot: this device has a rubberised outer case, and really feels rugged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even more useful than I thought.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe Flir TG267 Thermal Camera seems like a really good device, I have tested other thermal cameras with a similar price, the only minor fault I can find with this product is that the camera is a little laggy, other than that I really prefer the size weight and shape of this compared to the last, it really is nice and compact.
It has a handy led torch built in as well as a laser pointer to assist in accuracy.
Another thing that is a nice touch is a welcome note with an email address and someone’s face, this makes you feel like you are apart of a team.
Another really nice touch is the thermo coupling this plugs into the top of the device and comes up with the temperature of the probe on the screen. It comes with a really neat protection case that would be perfect to use on site.
The battery seems to last a good amount of time, I have been playing about for the last 30 minutes and it dropped about 5% in that time.
I used this at my main consumer unit under the stairs and found everything to be in good order. It’s very interesting to see.
I look forward to going back to work to use this during one of my many electrical breakdowns. I know this will save me so much time do to the nature of the machines I work on many breakdowns seem to be loose cables.

Bottom line: This is a solid unit by Flir (who has a long history in the industry) but do your research to be sure this unit will fit your required needs. Highly recommended!!!!

Golden Review Award: 112 From Our UsersI’ll keep this short and sweet:
    1. Unlike what is mentioned in the description, this device ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MEASURE BODY TEMPERATE AND CAN’T BE USED FOR SUCH. THAT IS A BLATANT LIE. You can adjust emissitivity but there is no setting for the temperature range mentioned. You ‘can’ measure body temp but it will not be accurate nor consistent.
    2. This is a good (and fun) camera. I’ve been “ghost hunting” all over the house with the grandkids. With some planning, you can leave heat signatures behind and then “find” them later, spooking everyone. I seem to have odd hand prints on the wall and people sitting in chairs when nobody is there. Oooooo, scary.
    3. It can detect animals in the dark. From about 30′ I picked up a rabbit in my back yard. The best night setting seems to be arctic or black hot for this.
    4. It has good detail and lets you see what your looking at from a reasonable distance. Of course there is no zoom so this will work well for looking at a breaker box but the little rabbit I mentioned earlier was just a little dot. In my breaker box I could see how much energy my two water heaters were drawing. Yikes!
    5. Being able to blue tooth the picture to the phone is great. You can use the software to prepare a report and send to a customer (or whomever) or take a pic of your overheating AC system and send it to your HVAC guy. Wonderful.
    6. You can check for air leaks, cold and hot spots and window efficiency. You can see water lines though walls, check coils on freezers and refrigerators, check for blockages on car radiators or condensers and so on. You can even see the inefficiency of your doors. It’s like having X-ray vision!

    Cons:
I don’t have that many but one seems to stand out. It is laggy. The picture produced is a real-time picture with a thermal overlay and these can misalign easily. Sometimes when moving the device, the picture will move but the thermal will lag and you have to wait for it to catch up. It also washes out easily. If you’re checking the house and come across a light source, which will be amplified through the thermal cam, it will wash out and you have to wait for it to reset.
I have both the 165 and the 267 and the 267 is the better purchase, even valuable for the casual user like myself.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’m very pleased with this product. It does not have a ton of extra features but it does what I want it to do. Show me the temperature of things in my home. The battery stays charged for quite a long time and it is easy to use. It is sensitive enough that I can see the heat left by my feet on the floor while my feet are still in my slippers. You can easily see the heat left by your fingertips if you touch your counter top or you can see the studs in an exterior wall. Absolutely fantastic for seeing what is hot and where heat is being lost in the house.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersI was in the market for a thermal camera years ago, but every option was over $1000. This device has everything I wanted. ability to store pictures, USB connection to the computer, laser target and a white light to illuminate the target visually. The only problem was that when I initially plugged it into my Mac to read the pictures, it unmount immediately. I mounted it on Windows, and I found there were file-system errors. Once corrected, it mounted on the Mac just fine. I was surprised that is came with a nice, soft carrying with a shoulder strap, so it stays clean even in messy environments. I’ve always respected FLIR as a brand, as I’ve seen their products disassembled on youtube. I’m very pleased with my purchase. I was not interested in one to connects to phones, because connectors and operating systems change too frequently, I’d hate to find my thermal camera not working because I’m no longer using a compatible device!

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersVery well built unit. I am very happy with my purchase and I believe it will suit my usage well. I gave it only 4 stars for a couple reasons.

To start the image quality is nowhere near as good as the demonstration imagines (which I already assumed). This unit simply is not detailed enough for anyone who wants that fine detail. However for Tradesmen using it for maintence to detect hot bearings, breakers, relief valves, etc. This is detailed enough to do the job, and feels sturdy. For the price it is a perfect compromise on detail compared to the higher end models.

My second reason for only 4 stars, is it does not come with a case. You have to order the case serperatly. The Case is very good quality and worth the extra cost. However in my opinion it really should come with the unit.

I am very happy with my purchase.

Messungen sollte man natrlich an kalten Winterabenden vornehmen.

Golden Review Award: 85 From Our UsersWerde diese Rezension in zwei Teile gliedern: 1. Meinung, 2. Anleitungen.

    1. Meinung:

    MfG

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersHace unos pocos aos las cmaras termogrficas eran prohibitivas.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersSo I bought this mostly to use as a diagnostic tool in my day-to-day work. I have an IR thermometer but I feel like it doesn’t give me enough visibility into what I’m working on for it to be useful. In any case, I really like this camera. I do have two minor complaints but considering the price range I don’t think they’re a big deal. I would definitely buy it again and recommend it to friends. Although, if I had an actual use case for this in a day job I would probably save up my money and buy one of the bigger models.

    GOOD:
    – Solid construction and feel. It feels sturdy in my hands and it looks pretty sweet.
    – Hand strap included which is nice if you plan on using this for more than looking at things on a workbench.
    – Accurate. As far as I can tell the temperatures are accurate (using the screen readout and aiming reticle).
    – Can transfer images using the USB cable or by removing the sdcard. I like that I can do both because it gives me greater flexibility and I can use a larger sdcard if I want.

    NEUTRAL:
    – The framerate is somewhere around 15-20 frames per second (definitely no more than 30). Doesn’t really interfere with the intended usage of this camera but it can be slightly annoying when moving it around quickly.

    BAD:
    – There is no included lens cap or case. I can’t imagine anyone not wanting at least one of those two things to protect their camera. I’m not even sure if they make lens caps for this particular model.
    – The temperature color scale is always relative to what’s visible on the screen. This is particularly annoying when you’re trying to compare differences in temperature between several points. The screen always shows a temperature reading in the top-left so it’s not impossible to do just annoying. I can’t imagine it would be that hard to implement 1-2 options in the camera’s menu that would allow changing this behavior so I don’t really understand why it’s not included.

Golden Review Award: 44 From Our UsersFascinating and beautiful instrument. Here are some additions to the very helpful reviews.

Manual doesn’t address whether or not you can leave the unit plugged and charging all the time you aren’t using it. This is OK for some battery-operated devices and very much not OK for others.

You can use the unit while it is charging, but you have to turn it on first and then connect the USB cable. It will not turn on if you are already charging.

Haven’t done it yet, but depending on which *authorized* distributor you buy from, it looks like you can get a free TG165 case or other FLIR item. Not sure if this works if you buy from authorized distributor where the order is fulfilled by Amazon, but I will soon find out. The FLIR website lists the authorized distributors; then go to the distributor website for details.

It shuts down if you do not press a button. The default is 2 minutes but you can change the time or turn that feature off, as I did.

If you are in a situation where the laser pointers might hit someone’s eyes (such as using the instrument near other people or a pet) you can turn them off via the menu.

After you first charge it and before you use it, copy the manual from the instrument to your computer. Otherwise you will blow away the manual when you delete images.

If you download the manual from the FLIR website, which requires registration, you get a 36MB self-expanding compressed file that includes a couple of dozen different manuals in various languages. Took a while on my slow connection.

There are other files besides the manuals in the compressed file. Not sure what they are.

Per the FLIR website, the current firmware version is 1.5.3 which is what came in my unit.

The just-announced $700 FLIR IR camera has the same IR sensor resolution (80×60) according to the FLIR website specs.
