Google Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation, Stainless Steel – Smart Thermostat – A Brighter Way To Save Energy
The brighter way to save energy.
The 3rd-generation Nest Thermostat learns the temperatures that you like, turns itself down when you’re away and connects to your phone. It has a big, sharp display. It controls your hot water tank. And it helps save energy. That’s the most beautiful part.
Saving energy starts with your thermostat.
Your thermostat controls 60% of your energy bill. So shouldn’t it help you save energy? The Nest Thermostat does. Since 2011, it’s saved over 4 billion kWh of energy in millions of homes worldwide. Because it learns from you. It gets to know the temperature that you like while you’re at home.
-
Remote control.
Change the temperature and control your hot water tank from anywhere using your mobile, tablet or laptop.
-
Home/Away Assist.
It automatically adjusts the temperature after you’ve left. It can even turn off your hot water if you’re away for a few days.[1]
-
Farsight.
When the Nest Thermostat spots you across the room, it lights up beautifully to show you the time, temperature or weather.

Got this fitted by an electrician, although it’s summer and the heating hasn’t been in it appears to be simple to use, works well with the app, and looks good on the wall.
Pros: Stylish, easy to use and schedule, good set of features on the app. Display animations are nice.
Cons: OLED display would be better – LCD is bright and has good colour, but black is not as dark as I wish it was. Google Home app integration is not perfect and needs a separate app for many features
Has given us greater control over our heating and hot water. Seems to have allowed us to reduce our bills and keep the house warm when we need it. Nice to wack up the heating as well when you are coming home on a cold day.
My old thermostat had only 3 core, so had to reroute a 5 core to my boiler. Boiler wiring terminals are not clearly indicated, so got my nephew (electrician) to talk me through it on the phone. Well worth the effort. It feels well built and will last a long time. Like anything else connecting to the internet, it should not be built to solely depend on the wifi connection as we all know how unreliable that can be. So making the extra effort to hard wire the stat to boiler is the most important thing. This will give you reliable manual control if the wifi packs up.
I have used this for over a couple of months now. It works seamlessly and learned the schedule I set very quickly. Automatic scheduling or manual over ride. Set manually physically or on the phone app, in house or out and about. Can be set to detect if your phone is in the house or not and sets a temperature accordingly. Lots of historical info available in the app. Very sophisticated.
I believe it has cut my heating bills, but I don’t have statistical evidence because of the changing season and I am more thrifty.
Does what is says, excellent when out of town and can put it on before you get home.
Does everything it says it does with zero hassle and it’s easy to install yourself. Brilliant purchase, definitely designed to make lives easier and cheaper.
Probably one the best things I’ve ever purchased on Amazon!
Superb learning attributes, handy to use when on the go and to keep a track on energy usage!
It’s a must in the modern home/era!
Not long had it installed but much easier to control the heating now the old way was awful. Got it connected to goole and alexa so can control by voice from anywhere in the house really clever bit if kit as it learns your patterns an does it for you after a few weeks
Great product, easy to use.
I purchased this as an upgrade to my Nest Gen 2 which had developed a fault on the Heat Link which had stopped connecting to the thermostat base.
As I already had the older version, this was a simple straight swap as the wiring from the Heat Link to the boiler was the same.
Please note that unless added as an option, this version does not come with a USB to power the base thermostat, nor does it come with a stand for the base thermostat. I managed to use the old USB cable and stand from the one I was replacing.
Amazon was the cheapest option to purchase this product online.
Much more accurate than the previous (traditional timer controller and thermostat), so the temperature doesn’t dip up and down so much. So it feels about right, all the time. A professional is required to instal it (unless you are a heating/electrician whizz!)
This was installed with a new boiler. Very pleased with the operation although I have been unable to integrate with Alexa. Works well from Nest app or thermostat itself.
Make sure the powersupply running to this has been checked prior to install. Works perfectly
Had to replace my Nest as the battery died after 8+ years, can’t complain at that. A beautifully made thermostat that saves you money, paid for itself easily in the first year. Simple to use and set up, app works well but make sure all your family have the app installed or the one left at home without the app will get cold when the thermostat thinks there is nobody at home
So many great features on this with accurate timing and temperature control of the heating. Love being able to warm the house up for when I get home using my phone. Highly recommended
I bought this to install myself. Upon receipt of the unit I discover that the instruction simply say ‘get a professional to install it’
I had previously been on Google’s help pages to make sure it was compatible and to see how it is installed.
it said it was compatible and it said that the app would walk me through the install. Turns out that the app only does that if you are in the States.
It should also be noted that this unit does not come with the fitting kit, so no power supply and no usb cable.
There are some wiring diagrams in the package but no walk though of how to install it.
My install is quite a complex underfloor arrangement with multiple zones and my boiler is in an outbuilding so the heatlink could not be installed there.
I sought the help of a Reddit group r/nest and someone there helped me out with the wiring. Having finally got it installed I cannot fault it. It’s incredibly easy to setup and use, programming a schedule on my phone took less than a minute. The thermostat tells you the current temperature in the room, what it is set to and how long it will take to get up to temperature. It all works flawlessly and is so much easier than the programming unit and thermostat it replaces.
I cannot comment on the learning capabilities yet and I’m not sure I need them anyway.
For anyone wanting to install this DIY
The heatlink goes near the boiler or your current programming unit. It requires a 230v feed to work.
The thermostat goes anywhere you want that can still pick up a signal from the heatlink (30m max). It does not need to be wired to the heatlink. It requires a 12v feed or a usb micro power supply.
The two link up on their own, they are paired from the factory.
If you need help try the nest group on Reddit.
Not so easy to set up to our heating system, so cost a reasonable 85 to an installer, that took a few minutes. It took a while and a bit of moving around to settle in to find the correct temp reading. Tricky to control by Alexa though as we have underfloor heating controlled by that as well and chooses the wrong options
Well made and easy to install but tricky to configure correctly for eco use. It’s smart learning ability is a bit too smart in that it tends to make assumptions about your usage requirements. For example when you set the schedule to turn the heating on at say 5am to 21 degrees centigrade, it’s learnt how long the boiler needs to get to that temperature so will turn the heating on up to 5 hours earlier to give it time to get to the desired temperature for the schedule. This can be disabled. Another confusing ‘feature’ is the hot water bacterium protection setting, which overrides all other settings to ensure the hot water is on for at least 2 hours in every 48 hours, even when the hot water mode is completely turned off! Again this can be disabled. Finally if you manually change the settings on the thermostat itself it has a tendency to add these changes to schedule. This is a nice piece of kit, the app is excellent, and it used correctly can manage your heating and bills, but it’s not fit and forget, you need to set it correctly for your requirements and keep an eye on it.
Opened a case with them in feb 2022 as the thermostat was coming on when no one was in the house. Have chased up a reason multiple times and no avail. I’ve now come to try through amazon to find that I’m past the window for suppo
I have been thinking about one of these for a long time and thought I would take the plunge after having a new boiler fitted with a wireless thermostat. We have Alexa and I wanted something that we could use from our phones and using our Alexa devices. The install was pretty simple attaching the heat link in place of the old thermostat receiver was straight forward but I would advise an electrician if you are not confident on this kind of thing. The sync and connections were really simple and the unit was up and running in no time via the nest app. However could I get Alexa to connect via the Google home skill, in short no. So we lived with that for a while until there was an error on the device regarding Wi-Fi and the ability to connect I believe it was a W5 error (loads of info online). Spoke with Google who were really helpful sent out a new thermostat to replace the unit that was not working. The original unit was paired with the heat link from the factory and was seemless once powered on however when pairing a new thermostat to the heat link it can be a little fiddly. In the end I set the heat link into pairing mode by pressing the large button for 30 seconds light pulses blue on unit. Then I reset the thermostat to factory settings and once it was back on began the pairing process. After that I set up the thermostat on the nest app and all of a sudden it appeared in my Google Home and is now being controlled through the Google home Alexa skill. Maybe the first device was just faulty. Now it’s up and running as we want it to it works well. There is a pre heat mode where the device will turn heating on for a pre determined number of hours I turned this off as we don’t need it to pre heat on the middle of the night and so just wasting energy and money. But have a dig around in the settings to make sure it suits your needs.
Once installed by an electrician I quickly found my round the system. I feel in charge of my heating and hot water. It is controllable by the app on my iPhone- even from my bed on a particularly cold morning. Need I say more! Easy to see what is happening when I am away from home.
Returned as can only act as an on/off controller – Bosch boilers can have continuous (aka modulated) control which gives better efficiency and less stress on the boiler. This device can be installed, with some effort – it is not directly compatible, but is not a good solution.
Ok so I’ve fitted this to my canal boat.
First off the receiver runs at 220 vaults to enable switching so it will run on your invertor although pulls only a tiny wattage.
The thermostat can and does run off your 12v line, you can fit it anywhere (mines in the mid galley).
The whole unit when you break it down is nothing more than a WiFi switch that can be controlled via temperature or timer.
It therefore controls my webasto diesel water heater for the rads ( splices straight into the control line no issues) and when plugged into mains the hot water tank is set on a 3 hour timer, 2 hours 6-8am then 1hour 6pm with the calorifior tank staying hot all the time.
Easy and very basic to fit once you understand what it does, great for perfect control of your essentials.
Connects to the WiFi with a breeze, gives weather based on your postcode and records usage via the app.
You can control it from anywhere in the world via WiFi and with location detection switched on it detects when no one is present and can go into low heat or power mode.
Turn off the heat when hot weather is about as it “learns” your preferred temp.
Caught it switching the heating on at 24’c the other night as due to the heatwave the algorithm had recorded high constant temps telling it this is where I should keep the air temp.
Can boost the hot water tank when busy with peeps and plugged in at any time by hitting the boost button, 30 min increments on a set timer
Easy to control when you realise what the software is trying to accomplish.
Highly Recommended
Does what it claims. I bought it to replace a broken ten year old thermostat. Google recommends installation by a professional, but as a reasonably competent and tech-savvy DIY-er I had no difficulty installing it myself. An understanding of electrical circuits helps. If replacing an existing thermostat (as I did) take note of the wiring connecting the old heat link to the boiler (photo?) before removing. If not, the boiler manual plus instructions that come with the thermostat should guide you in wiring the Nest heat link to the correct terminals. NOTE: a cable connecting the heat link to the boiler is not supplied so if DIY-ing you will need to obtain a length of heat-resisting cable (I used 0.75mm 4-core). You could use existing wiring if suitable (my old heat link was touching the side of the boiler – not suitable). Once the heat link is connected and operating (and not until – see instructions in box) the thermostat display is switched on. When it detects and connects with the heat link, it leads you through a simple setting-up list. It may take several days for the device to “learn” your preferred temperatures and routine, during which time you may need to manually adjust odd settings. You can, of course, choose to set a manual sequence but that would defeat the point of having an auto, “intelligent” device. I find the smartphone app for remote control extremely useful; I can check room temperature and check/adjust the heat setting from anywhere. For my personal setup I also bought the optional stand and charging cable and I was pleased I did.
Brought one of these to replace our old thermostat (the normally turn dial) this is brilliant can operate from my phone via the app and Alexa so very handy also good to see how eco you’ve been. Looks very stylish on the wall in the living room and love the inbuilt clock. We had to pay for an gas engineer to install so bare that in mind for cost too. Still with the money!
Easy to install, easy to use seems to be working well to save on energy bills.
Points to note:
You will need space somewhere on the wall near the boiler or in an adjacent room. I barely had the 30cm space away from the boiler where it’s recommended to install the heat link, but it has worked well with no issues.
You will need a power plug nearby if you want to wall mount it, otherwise you can buy the stand and place it near a power outlet. I powered my with the two wires that were on the old thermostat that were used to just call for heat, i.e no power on them. There are terminals in the heat link to do this
I’m happy with nest so far – the learning functionality is especially great. You just adjust the temperature a few times and nest adjusts and programs its schedule automatically. It’s just so convenient not having to worry about it, like you do with a basic thermostat. The presence sensing works great and of course the ability to adjust the temperature from anywhere is so useful. I rated it as 4* for two main reasons. Firstly Google is not especially innovative these days and it seems like the product hasn’t really changed for better in years. Some competitors have expanded their product lines and added things like connected radiator valves. Secondly, you may run into some trouble if you have a large house – you can’t buy a nest temperature sensor in the UK and have to get another Nest thermostat.
I managed to install two of these into a dual zone house.
It was pretty straight forward, once you know where each cable goes. The hardest part is figuring out what every cable is, as the builders seem to use any old wire, and they all came through one hole in the floor.
Swapping out the old thermostat to the new one was straight forward.
The features on the nest are really good, and hopefully will save me lots of money as they are better placed, and easier to adjust. As well as turning off automatically when i leave the house.
We had a new gas combi boiler fitted and wanted to enhance it’s effectiveness by a state of the art control. The Nest learning thermostat has provided that. Although our central heating system is simple and our hot water demands are low I’m trying to squeeze every last saving from the system while maximizing efficiency without forgoing comfort. Combined with a leading green energy supplier (Octopus) who is carbon-conscious, we have reduced our carbon footprint significantly. Definitely worth the outlay.

I regretted this buy and set up for the first couple of days. I had a lot of trouble with the temp not coming on. Instructions with the item are more or less useless.
I finally noticed that the little orange dots had a number in them. Mione all read 9. Hence my heating not coming on! I figured out how to to change that number by moving the orange dot up until it had 22 in it. Did the same for the dot the r end. That was Monday. Then I copied it for the rest of week. Now it is all sorted.
Much better than the previous thing installed whe n the heating was. Rubbish. This is just right. Easy to use o nce you know how. Quite why they cannot provide full instructions with it I don’t know. If not for this I would have given 5 stars.
The nest thermostat is remotely controllable and therefore has the potential to cut heating bills significantly.
It is however not as easy to instal as the manufacturers claim, definitely not a diy job, and took our experienced plumber an hour and a half to fit.
Unfortunately the Nest stopped working completely after 20 months. There is a 2 year guarantee but I had lost the original receipt, so had to buy a new one and have it professionally installed again.
When it works, it’s excellent. When it doesn’t, there’s no heating or hot water.
