Used this successfully on various areas in the garden that needed trimming, all the way up to ~10′. It’s not heavy but need to use the shoulder strap to take the weight if using for a long period. Overall, really pleased.
I used a lot of hedge trimmers in my time but this beats the lot. It’s light weight and easy to control. It makes the chore of cutting hedges a lot easier. Well recommended.
Easy to assemble; Both my daughter and I have used it with ease; Battery life is as described; Used it for more than 5 hrs, spread over 7 days and so far no issues and quite happy.
Longer blade which is good for cutting but makes it a little bit heavier to manage. Battery life good and doesn’t take too long to charge. Works effectively on my several hedges.
Very light and easy to use. Would have given 5 stars of trimmer could be used shortened as they can be awkward to use in a confined space. They are very quiet and sharp.
It does the job and saves me paying someone to cut the hedges, but it is quite heavy and may take me sometime to learn to control it well. I’d probably buy it again as having cordless is perfect for boundary hedges.
I’m sure this trimmer would be easier to use if your younger and stronger than me. I think I found it more strenuous because I had to reach higher than normal. Performance wise, it’s very good, especially as you can angle the blade.
We bought this direct from G-tech as they had a special offer via the National Trust. We got this to replace a corded hedge trimmer which was proving to be a bit awkward. We have a long hedge planted into a raised bed so needed something long enough to reach to the top the hedge which was already 2′ above standing ground level. The hedge is also some distance from an electricity supply so ideally we wanted something cordless.
In use, this unit is reasonably balanced, although it can become a little unwieldy if trimming the top of a high hedge. Adjusting the tilt of the cutting head is quick and easy, and the relatively long cutting blade makes short work of most trimming jobs. Branches of 6-8mm diameter are handled with no problem too. The component parts all appear well made and, with a very clear instruction manual, the trimmer is assembled and ready to go (save for a battery charge) in 2-3 minutes.
Overall, it’s solidly constructed and easy to operate.
Have had pole hedge trimmer before, which was a mains unit. This one is much easier because it’s cordless, I can do our whole hedge which is quite large. Gives a nice cut to our tall hedge without having to use a ladder. Battery life could be better, and time will tell but I’m not convinced by the quality of the unit. Seems a little too plasticky and flimsy considering what it cost. I guess only time will tell. Also not so go if you tilt the head, the balance goes all off and becomes cumbersome to use.
But the negatives are outweighed by the positives.
My only criticism is to battery life, it’s too short before having to recharge after about 40 minutes use, in my meagre opinion the power life after charging should last for at least two hours & needs to be improved.
Easy to use , lightweight and long reach with flexible top end .
Not the first Gtech we’ve bought and very good value for money as the rest of their products
As a retired design engineer, I recognize the excellent design features in this Gtech cordless HT50 Hedge Trimmer. I find it easy to use and the results are as good as those achieved with the professional petrol driven models.
I made the mistake of buying a cheaper trimmer a couple of years ago. It proved to be clunky, heavy and needed regular adjustment. This is a much better proposition, it is lighter and easier to use.It feels better made and I am sure it will be more reliable.
A very impressive bit of kit. When compared with my petrol powered trimmer its light weight and reach makes it a dream to use. It is nicely made and battery life seems good. Overall, I am very pleased with the purchase.
The pole is too long. If it was retractable it would be a lot easier to use. The switch on the side is uncomfortable to use so I stick a piece of insulating tape over it to hold it in. 100% improvement. Although it sounds as though it’s running slow it really does cut well. I think Gtech need to lower their prices a bit.
Left my hedge to get too high so did wonder if it would tackle the thickest of branches. It did amazingly well and a clear cut. Gets a little heavy after a while of use but understandable due to the way these cutters are made. Would highly recommend the gtech after such a long decision in which hedge cutter I should purchase. Not disappointed at all.
Looked at a few different cutters, decided on this one. Quick, easy and no cables!! Battery charged and lasted an hour enough time to cut the hedge. Would recommend
Cordless
Long reach.
Easy to use.
Gives a perfect cut.
Not as lightweight as i expected !
Does the job in half the time.
As a retired engineer that used to design machinery I can see that the GTech cordless hedge trimmer has been properly thought through. Almost every review of cordless hedge trimmers in general remark about how heavy they are but when you have motors and metal on the end of long sticks it’s hardly surprising. The GTech is perhaps a little lighter than most but it is the balance of cutters and battery that makes it easy to manoeuvre. It is a superbly designed piece of kit and follows the old saying that ‘if it looks right, it probably is right’. The battery charge time is longer than most too but this shows that care of the battery has been considered, a slower charge is kinder and extends battery life. Blades are sharp with good cut apertures and slice with ease, though I can’t say what the thickest branch may be I suspect for most hedge work they will be adequate. I have a tree and shrubs which are dealt with fine. There is only one small (and I do mean small) flaw in the entire kit and that is the shoulder harness carabiner clip. It is perfectly well up to the job but is probably designed and made for GTech by another company, I have seen better ones holding gardening gloves together. All in all a great piece of kit.
It was a lot better than the previous hedge trimmer and was so easy to use even though it was longer in blade and handle
Does a very good job, but trigger mechanism a little awkward.
So glad I purchased this. I did a lot of research to find the best hedge trimmer, and this is it. My husband (who’s over 70) loves it and we’ve managed to save hundreds of pounds. After our previous hedge trimmer guy retired, we were forced to get quotes from others. 1 X 450 and 1 X 550, just to trim the hedge and remove the debris Half a day’s work at most. So we’re thrilled with our new toy. I love the fact it’s so quiet!!
Excellent item – the OH delighted with his gift that has proven far superior to the heavyweight of a previous purchase from an alternative manufacturer. Highly recommends.
Additionally, there is a good long charge for the battery, and the hedge trimmer is so very easy to use.

Really happy with this. It cuts well and is easy to use. It can be a little heavy with prolonged use but really, you’re cutting your hedges maybe once a year so does that matter? I’ve found it great for trimming bushes into nice rounded shapes, and it’s long reach makes getting to the top of my high hedge pretty simple. Being battery powered, it’s so easy to just pick up and go, no need for running power cables into the garden. One downside is the branch cutter attachment that I also purchased – it’s not so great and doesn’t deal with anything more than a small branch, say 1-2″ thick. Overall though, I’m really impressed. Well worth the money

Light weight 2.9kg is the best part. My new model blade is 18″ compared to 12″ in the old model which is an improvement. Although the new one is nearly 1/2 kg heavier, because of the longer blade it is a good compromise. Also cutting efficiency is greater with this blade. On the whole very easy to use and recommend anyone to go for HT50 rather than HT3.0.

The only downside is the time taken to charge , an aspect Which? magazine review mentioned. But it trimmed my large hedge on a single charge and has impressive cutting capacity . It is pretty well balanced and manageable, much better for me than a Stihl 2 stroke machine I used to have
I actually bought one of these through the gtech store on ebay (same product, same price – but I was unsure if it was what I wanted, so I chose to get it from the manufacturer in case I wanted to return it! – as it turns out, it’s 90% great)
In terms of functionality, it’s fabulous – cuts through privet and leylandii like butter, even the woodier stems that have stopped other trimmers I’ve had. The angle adjustment is nicely varied, giving subtle angle shifts and great versatility, and the reach is superb – I have 9ft high hedges (and am 5″9) and it teaches the tops no problem; and something that really surprised me is how quiet it is. I mean it’s not silent by any stretch, but you wouldn’t need ear defenders and it won’t scare your neighbours.
The battery is decent… but could certainly be better – it takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge, but only lasts around 45mins. I bought a spare, but found I still needed to take nearly 2 days to get everything done due to the wait time on charge ups (I should say, maybe battery isn’t THE most practical solution for nearly 100m of 9ft hedges- but I chose it because I’d accidentally cut through the cables of 2 trimmers, and hate petrol ones, so I accept the consequences of my actions!)
In short, the battery approach is maybe best suited if you’ve got a smaller hedge situation.
Why I’m dropping a star though, is that although great to use, flexible and highly mobile not being tethered to a cable – the arrangement of the heavy blade/ long pole means it’s surprisingly awkward to hold for much longer than 30 mins. If you don’t have particularly good upper body strength you’ll really struggle. It would be 5 star if the pole could be removed, as I personally only need that reach to get the tops of my hedge, so doing the sides did feel very uncomfortable after a fairly short period – unfortunately the design of it places the power switch at the end of the pole, and as its a safety “squeeze-trigger+press-a-button” combo, you have to hold it in such a way that makes it uncomfortable to hold for a longer time.
So yeah, fabulous if you have small hedges, if a cable is impractical for you, or you’re short and need the added reach – but can be unwieldy if you’re dealing with a lot of hedge or have less strength.
I would however still recommend it – but would LOVE it if the pole could be removed
