Look amazing but the only complaint I have on mine is the wires wasn’t connected to the motor and I had to fix it and the face plate on the front had to be glued back o
Bought two, had to return one with a defective engine. Bought a replacement. Now both sets good.
Really nice set. Train and Coaches have great detail. Ordered a DCC encoder and works really good on my DCC Christmas layout.

I’m only using this for the base of a Christmas tree which is just as well ,going one way round as the controller only works going one way .
Controller is very poor quality
The only negative is that the controller is a bit basic, but as the loco and coaches alone justify the Amazon price, I am not complaining.
The fact that this set was available from Amazon for 108, made it an absolute bargain. I fitted a Hornby decoder and it performs exceptionally well, being both smooth and quiet. An option to turn the light off would have been useful.
Cars are detailed pretty nicely, though you only get 2 of them. I’d recommend picking up some additional track and one or two more cars from Hornby to extend the train to 3 or 4 coaches over all.
Do be aware, this is size OO scale, so a little bit larger than US scale HO. It fits the HO track, and will link up with HO train, but the actual cars are just a little larger than their US counterparts.
The Hogwarts Locomotive with working Headlight looks superb as do the 2 Long Express Coaches. The Track is a 3rd Radius Oval, I haven’t tried the points and siding Track yet due to space. The description of the product on Amazon says that it includes a Midi Trak Mat which it doesn’t. On the actual box, it doesn’t mention a Trak Mat, and it doesnt include one
Did NOT come with the “playmat” in the image. Engine seems of good quality. Runs well on my 18″ radius layout. Cars are plastic, but have a good amount of detail on both the interior and exterior. Couplers will NOT interface with “standard” horn hook or knuckle couplers. They are a European NEM style. So a Kaydee NEM knuckle adapter would be needed if you wanted to use it with your existing stock. Controller is lightweight and lacks the heft of cabs from yesteryear, however it does the job.
Reliable Hornby product as usual. Great detailing and smooth runner. Plenty of track and nice stater controller. Kids loved it.
Product fine except it was supposed to have a Hornsby TrakMat which has not been delivered
The track layout, while a bit dull is again good for houses short on space and for establishing if this will be a longer-term interest. In my case, I think the recipient will be more engrossed in the set and scenery building over all but this is a very attractive model to put into any scene you build.
One proviso: as mentioned elsewhere – these starter kits come with the flimsiest of controllers which I’m sure won’t stand the test of time. Allow for an additional purchase to get something better able to grow with your set.

Disappointment due to the trakmat not included in the set. There is nothing in the product details to say this is not included.
Beautiful. Love it. Though the controller is terrible. In the bin it went. Bought a Gaugemaster GM-GMC-COMBI Single Track Controller which is so much better (your able to make the loco go a lot slower smoothly).
