ILOKNZI Handicap Driving Hand Controls,Car Hand Controls for Disabled Drivers,Car Pedal device Assist Controls,Left or Right Hand Both Available,Length Adjustable
They come well-packed and from the moment you open the package you can see how well made they are, they have easy-to-grip handles and they seem easy to fit as well.
Obviously, check with your insurer if they are happy for you to fit them.
These are very easy to use hand controls that come inside a zipped storage bag.
I use fixed hand controls already and when I got my very first set a few years ago I was just handed the keys. No instruction was needed and when I had a hire car they fitted similar controls to this and I got no instruction at all.
That’s because they’re much easier to use than pedals with feet.
They fit onto the accelerator and brake which must be on an automatic transmission vehicle.
You will possibly have to inform your insurer and it’s ultimately up to them but I would think there’s no problem with hand controls and insurance.
Easily fitted to my Ford Galaxy’s pedals
Fairly easy to get the hang of driving by hand
The foam handle is comfortable to use
Cons
The “legs” are on their longest extension and the handle is only just level with my left knee (I sit high in the car as I have a short-ish torso)
It is an up and down motion rather than the more usual forwards and backwards of fixed in hand controls
Overall
It’s good for people who need an occasional bit of help with driving, and if you position the clamps very carefully, assuming you have nice big pedals, it’s possible to still get your feet onto the pedals to use them normally. The hand position isn’t as ergonomic as it could be, and it is definitely not as intuitive as proper installed controls (if you normally drive hand contol cars, and are using this as a quick stop gap or for a hire car, you will need to get the feel for them before heading out!)
This item was good value and quickly delivered. It is marketed as ‘temporary’ but after fitting it (on my Mitsubishi Shogun) and my disabled wife trying it, I made a bracket to secure it below the steering wheel and we now only remove it when someone other than my wife or I drive the car. Although it is my wife who is disabled I have driven quite a few miles using the hand controls (to test the fitting and brackets) and find it very easy to achieve good control of the throttle and brake. We are well pleased and very happy to recommend this item.
