Premetto che non sono un esperto. Consiglio di esplorarne ie possibilit guardando i numerosi video su Youtube. Per quanto riguarda le carenze, con alcuni algoritmi il suono risulta un po’ troppo distorto e non so se sia una caratteristica o un limite dei chip, forse dipende dalle sole 3 voci del sintetizzatore? Come per gli altri Volca di questa generazione, manca l’uscita MIDI ( presente invece l’entrata). La versione successiva (la 2) dotata di 6 voci e uscita MIDI, ma il prezzo superiore. Complessivamente sono soddisfatto usandolo con una scheda ZOOM, macbook e Ableton.

Que dire, j’adore Korg et je suis pas du, je m’amuse comme un petit fou avec cet instrument, le son est gnial, je suis qu’un amateur, donc mon avis n’est pas forcment objectif, mais on peux faire de chouette sons avec ce synth

Amazon tends to smush the Volca reviews together, so for the record I’m talking about the Volca FM. It’s a compact, three-voice sound module that puts the six-operator FM model of the mid-80s Yamaha DX7 into a small box with a sequencer.
It’s fun but slightly awkward. It doesn’t work all that well as an FM sound module because it doesn’t respond to velocity over MIDI and it only has three-voice polyphony. There doesn’t seem to be a way to chain several of them together.
On the positive side it’s mostly compatible with DX7 patches, of which there are thousands on the internet, although you have to use a third-party utility (Dexed) to send the data to the Volca FM. On the negative side it’s only compatible with the original six-operator-sine-waves-only model of the DX7/9/7II, not the four-operator-with-different-waves model of the later DX11/TX81Z, so it’s not compatible with the famous Lately Bass patch (for example).
As such it’s a kind of FM groovebox, akin to the Elektron Digitone, but the sequencer is very limited. There are sixteen patterns that can be chained together, but not made into a song, unless it’s a simple 1-2-3-4 arrangement. The sequencer has very limited live control, so I have the impression it’s mostly intended to play static basslines. I use an Arturia BeatStep as a sequencer instead.
As a kind of FM version of the TB-303 however it makes a lot of sense. The front panel controls respond in real time, and the built-in patches – which are surprisingly good – all have articulation, so you can have a lot of fun playing sequences through it while mimicking filter sweeps, but with clashing digital FM sounds. The presets are a neat cross-section of the DX7’s most famous sounds. The pianos, bells, flute etc are all pretty good, although this sadly highlights its limitations as a sound module.
In theory it doesn’t make a lot of sense, because Dexed is free, but the front panel articulation is an advance over the original DX synths and it has a decent chorus effect, so if you think of it as a cheap bass-box it’s not too bad. It’s also half the price of the cheapest second-hand DX100 and it’ll send sync pulses to the other Volcas, so if you have some of the more unusual Volcas – the Modular, example – it’s handy as a “normal” synthesiser.
You can edit the patches deeply, but good luck with that. Good luck with that.

Really pleased with my Korg Volca FM. Great for creating interesting sounds and rhythms.
The Volca FM can be loaded with patches from the famous Yamaha DX7. However, the keyboard is too small to be useful, so I would recommend a MIDI controller. Another thing to note is that the Volca FM only has MIDI IN. Despite that, this synthesizer is good for the price.

While some of the Volcas do one thing well, or not so well, this is way more versatile in it’s sounds. And while FM synthesis is usually a complicated headache, here, Korg have done truly astounding work making it much more simple, and turning it into an absolute joy.

Like many of my Volcas, i run this through some cheap delay and reverb pedals (only about 20 to 30 each through Amazon) to make the sounds even more lush. But in the case of the Volca FM then i’m not sure that’s even needed. This makes a wide selection of great sounds including flute, marimba, and a nice sub-bass. With many of each sounds parameters being tweak-able to the point where a sound can become unrecognizable in any number of ways.

Having been put off of FM synthesis for many years by my over complicated Yamaha DX7 a long time ago, i was nervous about buying this. But i’m so glad i did. The Volca Bass or NuBass might be just a little bit more fun sometimes. But this is lots of fun as well, plus far more usable in many more musical styles and settings.

If you only buy one Volca, i recommend this one.
Ich habe im Laufe der Zeit doch ein paar kleine Synthies – unter anderen der Volca Serie von KORG – gekauft und bin vollauf zufrieden damit. Die Gerte knnen fr diesen Preis extrem viel, klingen sehr gut / analog – mancher wrde sagen “fett” – und kann diese Gerte nur weiterempfehlen: fr Enthusiasten ebenso wie fr Einsteiger, die ein wenig rumprobieren und Knpfe drehen wollen ;-). Im vergleich zu den Software Synthesizern, die es ja auch wie Sand am Meer gibt, empfinde ich die Haptik, das typische rumdrehen und Pattern basteln als fr mich die kreativere Variante, um Musik zu machen.
Being able to load DX7 patches is a huge deal. This little synth may be small but it packs huge features. 6 operator engine with a menu system that is easy to understand and use even though it is based in a single line LED display.
You can edit , load and save up to 32 presets at a time. You can transfer patches from freeware like Dexed.
The sequencer and arp are simple and fun to use. The keyboard is actually easy to use. You can connect an external midi keyboard. You can sync it with other volca devices.
Build quality is actually very good for a plastic box. Batteries add weight and make it feel solid. Battery life is good. There is a built in speaker however it really does not give you a real feel for this synth.
Hook this up to a pair of headphones or an amp and it comes alive. The built in chorus adds depth. If you add a reverb to the mix this thing becomes a religious experience.
You will not be disappointed.
A very clean sounding fm synth possibilties are endless possibilities. A geat sounding synth for famous dx7 bass lines and sounds. . All for all a very brilliant lil synth . Midi in is a good feature and you can sync other volcas via the sync in out on panel. Its got the same algorithms as dx7 and basically its a mini dx7 in a box . Schliet man an den Kopfhhrerausgang einen Verstrker an, erzielt man eine hervorragende Klangqualitt gerade beim Bass (Click). Hier Vorsicht beim ‘Decay’-Regler. Steprecording ist auch ber die ‘FUNC’ Taste verfgbar. Alle Grundfunktionen sind gegeben. Daher 5 von 5 Sternen.
Ottimo sintetizzatore per chi vuole affacciarsi alla sintesi in fm da neofita e non vuole spendere tanti danari! Lo uso con il suo alimentatore da 9 volt e non riscontro problemi (rumori in rec o altro)!!!
My first unit was delayed in shipping and was damaged and had missing items… I was rightfully angered as it was a Christmas gift, Amazon refunded my money and I ordered via another shipper, I got the new unit in one piece before promised date! It was just as advertised! This is a serious desk top synth… it has deep parameter control and sequencing capabilities, it is for experienced musicians really, but will be fun for anyone to noodle around on, just be prepared for deep sub menus on editing parameters etc. the sounds are lush, deep and 80’s PHAT. Dig it! For the money and capability, you can’t beat the Volca line of desk top synths.

ich habe den Korg nur eine Stunde getestet , vielleicht habe ich ein defektes Gert bekommen, beim ein und ausschalten kommt aus den Boxen ein lauter Knall , ALGRTM macht beim drehen laute strgerusche , ein passendes Netzteil ist nicht dabei, ich wundere mich ber die schlechte Verpackung ohne Polsterung, kann sein das der Korg klasse ist aber mich stren dieses Gerusche. fr meine Lautsprecher ist das gar nicht gut. aber schlecht bewerten mache ich nicht das wre unfair bei einem vermutlich defektem gert , ich denke das ich es nicht wieder bestelle ,Fingerabdrcke lassen sich nicht verhindern , schwachsinnig ist der Minilautsprecher auf der Unterseite was soll das ? das hat mit Klang nix zu tun . immer hin hat der Korg eine gute KLangqualitt wenn man eine gute Hifianlage besitz
Agrble utiliser, pas cher et bien fini, il donne envie. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas accroch. Un peu trop de navigation dans les menus et pas trop l’impression de pouvoir crer le son que je veux. Bref la synthse FM c’est pas pour moi.
Le volca Keys doit tre mieux adapt un dbutant.
Es complicado de usar, y sobre todo est tan plagado de mens y submens que al principio te hars un lo, pero si no quieres adentrarte en el diseo de sonido, y slo quieres hacer msica, con una interfaz midi puedes pasarle infinidad de parches creados por la comunidad.
En serio, junto al Drum, ste tiene que ser el Volca ms potente.

Wahrscheinlich der spektakulrste Volca und die einfachste Art mit der FM-Synthese loszulegen. Jedoch ist die FM-Synthese an sich schon hoch kompliziert. Also vielleicht eher mit Substrakions-Synthese anfangen (Volca Keys, Volca Bass…)
Aber das Teil ist ein echter Allesknner fr einen sehr sehr geringen Preis.
Great sounds out of the box – very tweakable too – the fixed velocity is my preference anyway, and there are other controls that can make the sounds far more interesting compared to velocity. Sounds better than a DX7 I think, and the 3-note polyphonic limit is not an issue in the mix. Best purchase I’ve made in ages, because there is lots to keep you interested and the sounds are terrific.
Very well-made and fantastic sounding little synth that is packed with tons of sounds. This is basically a miniaturized DX7. There’s a steep learning curve for those unfamiliar with FM synthesis, but a large variety of presets helps new users explore sounds without much trouble. The ribbon pad is usable but far from ideal, I recommend investing in a MIDI controller to make chords easier to play.
Tiene un buen banco de sonidos y la ventaja de que s maneja los seis operadores originales del DX7 a diferencia del Reface que slo maneja 4. La nica desventaja es que slo reconoce velocity con el control manual que tiene, si lo conectas con un controlador MIDI de teclado, no reconoce los cambios de velocity en la ejecucin.
Lo habra conservado pero tena un error de fbrica con dos “teclas” y lo tuve que regresar a Amazon, ahora no estoy tan seguro de volver a comprarlo considerando que hay tantos plugins que usan este tipo de sntesis y con mejores prestaciones.

As far as fun per dollar, this thing ranks only behind my $100 Jazmine guitar – absolutely lush and fantastic sounds, excellent features, and a profound, exciting potential when coupled with an external sequencer. It has add a wonderful new angle to my live rig and it’s tiny! Can’t say enough good things about it – love, love, LOVE it.

Excelente opcin para empezar a explorar el mundo de la sntesis FM en un formato pequeo, transportable y a precio accesible. El manual no es el mejor y deja mucha informacin y funciones importantes de fuera. Recomendable mirar algn tutorial de introduccin en lnea si no ests familiarizado con la lnea Volca. La programacin de sonidos toma un poco de “menu diving” para patches ms complejos. Aunque existe la posibilidad de editarlos con software externo e importarlos al aparato posteriormente. Sabiendo usar este pequeo sintetizador, puedes producir infinidad de sonidos de buena calidad tanto como los clsicos del DX7. Definitivamente uno de los mejores dentro de la lnea Volca de Korg.

Excellent synth, amazing sounds, functions, 4 voices, and a fun Arpeggiator. You can edit the functions on the algorithm which makes it more powerful music tool. The knobs are a bit small if you want to play with them real time, but you can record the motion. only has MIDI In, and whish it had the DC adapter.
Un sinte bsico en apariencia, pues se le puede sacar gran provecho. No lo conozco lo suficiente an, pero estoy seguro que pasndolo por algunos filtros, puedes darle gran versatilidad. Gran compra, aunque un da despus de que lo adquir su precio baj ms de 600 pesos. An as, no me arrepiento.
Ho acquistato questo sintetizzatore – insieme al Volca Keys – da assoluto neofita, nonostante questo riesce a dare ottime soddisfazioni. La navigazione tra i menu inizialmente ostica, ma con la pratica si riesce presto a customizzare i suoni – le possibilit sono enormi. possibile caricare nuovi preset usando un cavo usb-midi e diverse app e web-app ( PatchBase per iPad, che costa qualche soldo ma offre controlli fantastici o synthmata.com ). La qualit di costruzione e il suono sono incredibili per il prezzo.
Tiene muy buenas prestaciones para el precio: secuenciador, suficientes algoritmos de frecuencia modulada, se pueden guardar presets y es posible sincronizarlo con los Pocket Operator de Teenage Engineering.
Es muy divertido usarlo, bastante versatil para el tamao y precio que tiene y el diseo mola mucho.
All said and done though, for $200 it’s pretty amazing what this little thing on just batteries can do.
Used to play a real DX7 years ago and decided to give this a try. Don’t let the small size fool you, this synth sounds amazing and best yet you can download hundreds of sysex files for the old DX7 into this thing. Easy to use and so versatile. So much is packed into a small size. Only wish would be for it to have more voices.
On peut retrouver les sonorits du DX7 en chargeant dans la mmoire du Volca les “son” du DX7, grce un logiciel (Dexed) et un cble USB –> MIDI IN (a acheter en plus, hlas). Dommage qu’il n’y ait pas directement une interface USB.
La petite taille du Volca permet de l’emporter avec soit facilement. Il fonctionne sur piles et a un petit haut-parleur intgr. Le haut-parleur n’est pas de grande qualit, mais il fait bien son boulot, quand le Volca n’est pas branch sur un casque ou une table de mixage et un ampli.
Le revers de la mdaille de cette petite taille, c’est le clavier : il est vraiment petit et il faut se concentrer pour ne pas jouer deux notes en mme temps avec ses gros doigts 🙂 . Mais difficile de faire un meilleur clavier sur une si petite taille.
Pour moi, il manque la possibilit de sauvegarder ses compositions autre part que sur la mmoire interne du Volca. Un port pour carte micro-SD serait bienvenu, ainsi qu’une prise MIDI OUT. Sur ce dernier point les Volca, ont toute l’lectronique ncessaire pour grer le MIDI OUT et des personnes soudent des prises MIDI au Volca pour en profiter. Mais adieu la garantie.
Quelques dfauts donc, mais au vue de ses qualits et son prix (169 ), la note de 5 toiles est mrite !
Great small synth. Don’t expect the usability of a full synth, but do look forward to great sounds and an easy to use interface. For as small as it is, it sounds great and makes it very simple to get into analogue synths. Don’t worry about the odd shaped power supply needed, it runs on batteries for a very long time.

My expectations weren’t very high for this price-point, but I have been blown away so far.
Pros:
1. Super easy to sync with Tempo and play midi notes from DAW. You just need a simple, cheap midi I/O to USB adapter (around 10-15 $), and a DAW that supports MIDI I/O (There aren’t many that don’t).
2. First thing I did was plug in my headphones to the 3.5mm jack turned it up to full volume and there was NO WHITE NOISE.
3. Sounds great. lots of presets to easily switch between with one infinite spinning knob with a tactile feel.
4. As you try out the presets, you can experiment with the different knobs and quickly come up with unique sounds. if you wanna undo the changes to the preset, you just switch to a different one then switch back.
I’m pretty sure you can do lots of other stuff, like save your own presets and import them to your computer but what I know so far is that it makes a great bass line, even without any external effects.
Only con I can think of so far – it doesn’t have an actual filter, but the velocity fader acts sort of like a lowpass filter for most presets.
I will update this review once I get to use it with my mixer and USB audio interface.
I had read that FM synthesis was complex and difficult and some have noted that working through the various parameters on the box itself is difficult. However I must say that I have found it to be incredibly intuitive and is an absolute joy to dial up different parameters and just play with them and discover the infinite possibilities that come out of it. In addition, I’m looking forward to getting a MIDI cable so that I can upload even more sounds via the PatchBase app on my iPad – opening up a vast array of DX7 sounds.
I’m now getting started on hooking it up to GarageBand on my iPad so I can save my loops and sequence them. Just wish my budget could stretch to some of the other Volcas to add beats/ samples but looks like I can do this using my iPad and other apps till then!
Prodotto acquistato per nuovo, ma la confezione arrivata non integra: le batterie incluse non erano sigillate e non era sigillato il cavo audio in dotazione. Il sintetizzatore poi era avvolto in carta assorbente da cucina tipo Scottex anzich nel classico involucro in plastica antiurto. Perfettamente funzionante, ma palesemente gi usato.
Fantastic little fm synth, quite amazing what they can fit into this tiny box. You can download more presets from korg for free, Yamaha dx7 is there but haven’t got round to doing that yet.
Box wasn’t in very good condition on delivery but won’t let that take away from 5 stars as it’s a total gem of a synth.
Conforme aux attentes, il faut s’y connatre un minimum dans le live pour une utilisation confortable.

Took delivery of one of these a few hours ago and am totally impressed. I’d read about fm synthesis and how esoteric it can all be but this device is really quite user friendly. I’m a guitar player looking for something to bring a little variation to recordings and this fits the bill admirably. I’ve yet to get into deep editing of parameters so there are still aspects of this device that I’ve yet to discover. There are a few minor gripes such as there being midi in but no midi out. Genuine synth players will want to connect it to an external keyboard as the integral touch sensitive one is a tad fiddly. In general, however, it’s just about as much fun as you can have without getting yourself locked up. Brilliant.
Yes, the velocity implementation and lack of portamento are also bummers, but I can’t really fault this thing. The five stars are because I use this every day and the korg engineers did a great job sound-wise and proper fm synthesis (or at least the phase modulation synthesis of dx7) has a way of putting me into a trance-like state.
non-pro tip #1: When importing patches over midi from pc, make sure you turn all six volca voices ON after importing the patch. Many times, voices crucial to the patch are not turned on.
non-pro tip #2: Make, or better yet, import a default sine wave patch from a patch bank that you can edit and experiment with. The default parameter values are not always what you think they are – sometimes they are in the middle of the range.

Korg keeps on making the right choices for he Volca series. This FM synth is possibly one of the best yet for being portable. The performance features are crazy, the arpeggio is awesome!
