Tough, reliable, great on battery and capable of more than I expected. Money well spent and as the title states…yet to be disappointed by any aspect of this device.
OCH!!!! WHY DIDN’T I BUY ONE OF THESE YEARS AGO. IT IS BETTER THAN A ROLLS ROYCE. LIGHTWEIGHT BRILLIANT PIECE OF KIT. GO ANYWHERE GO FASTER LITTLE MACHINE. NICE LOOKING HEDGES NOW TOO. MANY THANKS MAKITA FOR A WONDER TOOL
Lovely lightweight hedge trimmer. I have other Makita tools so didn’t need to buy a battery. Makes light work of cutting back the trees and next-doors hedge. Enjoy using it.
I bought this in the knowledge it is built for light trimming and not deforestation. It performs more energetically than I anticipated and produces a good clean cut, As with all hedge trimmers it’s essential to lubricate the blades after each use if you want them to do a good job. I easily got an hour of use from a 3 amp hour battery, impressive!
This is a great hedge trimmer, it cuts well, well on a privet, and anything light, not for heavy duty, bush ir branch..
Great product, recommended..
Works with LXT makita
I bought this because I can no longer lift my Stihl motor trimmer for any length of time. I have the smaller MAKITA grass trimmer and I reckoned this would be fine for the privet hedge. I was right!
It works well and I managed to do 1.5 hours trimming before it rained heavily. (Nothing to say you can’t use it in the rain)
The only warning is to ensure the tip of the blade doesn’t dig in. So aside from tilting it towards the cut I suggest angling it slightly away from the hedge at the tip.
As you can see it cut through about 12 inches of growth but remember this is privet and has no great stalk width.
If you akready have batteries it makes good value.
Initial was set on the more expensive version, spent a whole deliberating on best blade length. Had an additional look at specs and after checking the weight comparison opted for this model. Not disappointed, light enough to make use manageable, slightly annoying trigger release although noted it is a safety feature. One in front of the machine on the support handle then an additional one operated/released by the thumb. Manage the Laurel hedge with ease back to cut line and capable of cutting the thinner woody bits too. Good value, loving me funds for other projects, if only the strimmer had a better delivery eta!
Bought these as I already had Makita battery’s and wanted to try battery hedgecutters.
Run my own gardening business and wanted an alternative to heavy petrol cutters.
Been plesently surprised by how good they are are..your not taking down massive hedges with these but for general trimming and shaping up there top draw.Battery life is decent I can do about 6hrs constant on a 6amp battery easily.
I have a range of other Makita 18v tools so this was an easy choice. Looking to tackle brambles, bushes and some hedges without cutting the cable on my old trimmer.
First couple of uses and I can say this is an excellent trimmer. Handled all I threw at it with ease. I like the safety features that others have mentioned and for me these do not detract from the usability. Why not 5 stars? The blade protector that comes with the tool is not really good enough for safe storage. Only minor, but it wouldn’t have hurt to have a better blade cover. Overall an excellent tool.
A few years ago I bought a Bosch battery cutter that now causes problems getting started. Only many many attempts and bashing it get function again.
It also blunted quite quickly resulting in branches having the leaves stripped from them but the branches were uncut.
I bought this Makita after noticing a neighbor cutting his hedge yet I couldnt hear it and asked what he’s using. He said he’s had it a year and despite having a very large garden with tall hedges has coped admirably with the 5Ah battery. He no longer uses his petrol cutter.
My experience is the same as his, its like a very quiet mains powered cutter.
The blades move a lot slower but cut a lot better, it goes through thick stems my previous cutter would quit on. And its so quick!
The blades can be replaced without taking it apart, and are actually available for sale!
Very well designed and engineered, a surprisingly good product.
The only downsides:
I find it tricky to push the release button that allows the trigger to be pulled.
After the battery has charged, the small noisy battery cooling fan doesnt stop.
Small fans wear out quicker because they need to spin faster to have good enough effect, so remember to unplug an hour after putting on charge or set a timer.
Be wary:
I nearly bought a much cheaper none Makita charger. Dangerous because cheap chargers can cause even the best batteries to damage, fires from li-ion batteries are nasty!
Make sure whatever you buy (from Amazon at least) has the word “Makita” on it, otherwise its a cheap replacement. They look identical apart from the missing “Makita”.
This is a great piece of Makita kit. It cuts far better than I though it would and the battery (5ah) lasts for ages. Have not used my petrol hedge trimmer since I bought it.
Great product, I already had several suitable batteries. Granted it’s not as powerful as a petrol hedge trimmer but more than up to keeping most hedges trimmed as confirmed by a professional gardener friend who has borrowed it many times, saying a 6ah battery lasts a good while from a full charge.
After ment years of struggling with corded tools, decided to purchase this battery powered one. I had a Makita drill with the battery so purchased a bare one. What a great improvement, mobile light and powerful. Ran for over a hour, and still had around 30% battery power left. A game changing tool!
great addition, works so much better with the 5ah battery
Brilliant, had no issues, slightly heavier than expected, but rather that than be tethered by a power cord. Surprised by how little power these shears used over about an hour trimming about 30m of unruly shrubbery. Certainly a worthy investment if you’re already bought into the the makita 18v range & have bush to trim!
Sharp, made light work of cutting over grown hedge, easy to use. Great bit of ki
Been using for a few months before I left a review, these are well Worth the little extra , not too heavy, blade maybe a little thin but imagine to keep weight dow
