As part of COVID19 i have been taking more of an avid interest in the garden so splurged on the makita hedge trimmer. I had makita tools already so i had a few 5AH batteries. This thing is a beast it cut down anything i threw at it and by the time i had finished my garden 3 hrs later the battery was still on full bars.

Easy to use dual trigger for safety (both have to be pressed) i wish it was a tiny bit lighter but that might just be after 3 hours of work. Highly recommend it if you are in need of a hedge trimmer. I have no idea what the two big brothers of this one would do (the 36V ones) as this sorted out everything i threw at it.

Excellent I took down a beast of a hedge with this.

Bought this to replace old hedge cutter. Didn’t read the description properly and had to buy two batteries and charger. But have used this on several hedges and bushes and find it works and cuts great and would not hesitate in giving 5 stars.

    Absolutely brilliant!
Light, strong, robust. As expected from Makita.
    Definitely recommend these.
Can’t believe there’s idiots out there giving them on star because there’s no battery included… learn to read. A 5ah battery lasts me 40 mins (not constantly running!)

This is a great trimmer. It’s lightweight (if you use one of the smaller capacity batteries) and is very quiet running. It’s a real treat to not have to worry about cutting the cable. I have a few hedges of 20-30 metres in length, and I’d say they’re cut in half the time it would take with a normal electric hedgetrimmers. The one thing I notice is that it does get heavy after 15-20 minutes, not so much because of the weight of it, but because of the fact that you’re using it constantly (and not stopping to tend to the cable) as you would with an electric trimmers. A brilliant piece of kit!

It’s Makita. It’s good. It’s not exceptionally light and it cuts differently to a mains machine but once you get used to it then it is great to use. I cut a 130 foot long beech hedge. Some of the branches were 15mm or so thick and it managed them. The mains cutter that I used before might cut them easier but the Makita manages them. Battery life was really good (there’s no battery supplied but I have lots of Makita equipment). I was worn out at about the same rate as the battery!
Above all it’s impossible to cut the mains cable.
It’s a bit pricy but for me the fact that 1) my past experience of Makita tools is good and 2) I have several batteries that work with the cutter and 3) cutting the hedge without having to worry about cutting the mains cable – makes it worth it to me.

I was sceptical whether this would have the oomph to trim our Hawthorn and Cherry Laurel, but as long as you are trimming new growth from a well maintained hedge, this tool is just the ticket. You can even cut thicker 1cm branches as long as you are patient. For us, it has cut hours off our regular hedge trimming. We previously used Electric (wired) hedge trimmers and the constant repositioning of extension lead drums and the cable snagging on various shrubs in the garden made the job labourious. With this tool we can nip round the whole plot in one go and I can trim the entire site in 45 mns. I use a 4Ah battery and lasts me 3 complete cuts of the garden..we have hedges on 3 sides. The blades seem slightly smaller than our previous wired trimmers which means we don’t get such a neat cut on the Laurel, but overall this tool has been transformative for our gardening. It’s now feasible to do a weekly trim on new growth without eating into the time too much

I always buy Makita bare tools as they are very good value for money providing you’ve got the batteries (that’s where the price jumps up) and beware of copy batteries as they usually turn out to be unreliable a d false e economy. This hedge trimmer is the 18v single battery so that helps keep the weight down. And its ideal for my 30ft long privits

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI was a little worried about the ability of my drill battery to work this tool but there are no concerns, I cut about 40 metres of hedging and the battery was still going strong.
I can’t ever see myself cranking up a two stroke hedge trimmer again ( I wish my neighbours would not do this on a Sunday morning )
The only quibble is the need to hold both the switch and safety button depressed with the right hand and the blade guard /safety engaged with the left – it gets a little awkward at times but is not a deal breaker. Full marks to Makita for making this option available at a budget price – well worth the purchase

When unpacking this I thought that I’d made a mistake by ordering it as it looked quite flimsy and didn’t sound very powerful. I was soon reassured on first use as it went through my hedge like a hot knife through butter. Well worth the money and I have since used it on a challenging job without problems. I spray blade with wd40 before each use to keep it cutting well.

Bought this to cut hedge/brambles/nettles on the narrow lane to various houses including ours – got fed up with trying to connect up 5 long extension leads to get there, or waiting for the owners of the hedge to book the tractor flail normally used
Really sharp cutter, battery lasted well over 50 metres each side of the lane – really impressed
Just need something to help with clearing up all the cuttings

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI used to use a petrol hedge trimmer, a pole-type. It was smelly, heavy and the starter would break often and need replacement parts. I assumed it was powerful and needed to cut my thick hedges…

I wasn’t convinced that this Makita hedge trimmer with one battery would be good enough, and not as powerful as the petrol one I already own – I was wrong!

The makita hedge trimmer is lightyears ahead – it weighs very little – easy to hold without arms tiring. Makes very little noise, no fumes and the blade (although it appears to move slow) cuts through hedges with ease (thick beech hedge).

Worth every penny (hedge trimmer wasnt that expensive, but once you take into account a battery and charger it adds up).

I wish I had bought this years ago.

Never had one of those before but I could recommend this product. I used a 4AH battery for around 1-2 hours and it didn’t lose any battery.

I was surprised at how light weight it is. It could have alittle more power but it does the job.

Light, tough, and very easy to use. A 2.0Ah battery lasts over an hour. I didn’t get tired even after over an hour of cutting. Lovely balanced weight. Great grip. I’m just under 6ft and I was cutting the sides of 11ft hedges easily.

Golden Review Award: 39 From Our UsersPurchased this as my Petrol Hedge trimmer had stopped working and was less than 2yrs old. I needed a new one and saw this whilst searching. I already use many of the Makita products so I already had several batteries. I ordered it on the Monday and it came next day, I wasn’t expecting too much as it wasn’t very expensive but I needed something quick to get the hedges cut.
I was very surprised how good it actually was. It cut the hedge o problem even on the longer thicker parts. I was using a 4AH battery and it only used 1bar of the battery.
    Would definitely recommend this product.

This is an excellent, well made hedge trimmer. When I first connected my LXT battery and tried it, I felt as though it was slower compared to the old Black & Decker 240v hedge trimmer I had. But when I tried it on the hedge, WOW. It cuts effortlessly and very accurately.

This is a seriously good trimmer, and a must have if you have already got some LXT batteries, or want to move to Makita LXT gear.

The LXT batteries can power a lot of different things, drills, sanders, impact wrenches etc etc. So easy to build up the LXT kit.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersLove Makita … This adds to the catalogue of amazing products. It has three triggers for safety. I personally taped one so it’s not as awkward and can be used two handed (where is the third hand supposed to come from) but it chops through 10/15mm thick branches easily, anything bigger I make it work and use it like a chainsaw rocking it and applying light pressure and it chews through it eventually. It’s really quiet as well, Makita build quality. 10 stars if I could.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI am delighted with this hedge trimmer. I do have the beginings of a collection of Makita LXT kit. I have a multi tool which is awesome, and a superb brushless drill. Both came in a big square makita box and the two boxes clamp togther! I’ve added the Makita torch because I have four incredible batteries and two fast charges! So when I needed a hedge trimmer, it was a no brainer, a bargain ‘body only deal’ arrived next day! and our hedge is now fully under control. It is beautifully quiet and very light and easy to use.

  41. Anonymous says:

It’s great to have the freedom from wires, and there’s no shortage of power from even a 3ah battery – lasts for trimming all of the hedges in my average sized garden. Ideal if you already have the battery and charger.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI bought this because I like Makita products. I already have the batteries and charging unit that are needed to use the trimmer. Cuts small branches without any problems. It is not suitable for thick branches, excellent for hedge maintenance. I found the trimmer light and easy to use. After trimming a large hedge both sides and top I still had enough charge in the battery to use it on the Makita hoover.

I am very happy with this hedge cutter, it uses the same battery as my drill, it is light weight, has a blade cover for storage and a slot for hanging on the wall.

It would be 5 star, except I feel it’s light weight feel makes it feel short. The cutter blade would be improved by being longer but this is a minor quibble.

  48. Anonymous says:

Its Makita need I say more. Does the job really well, light and easy to operate. you do need a mains powered one for thicker branches but if you keep the shrubs trimmed this does the job nicely.

  49. TwylaFSOWusdepx says:

Reasonably lightweight and very sharp – cuts maybe up to 15-18mm thick of woody hedge at a guess. Long run time off just one 3 amp battery. Have to use two hands so less good if you’re stretching but that might save toppling off a ladder, lost fingers, etc! Very impressive. Makita really are superb.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersQuite impressed with this, bought as an alternative to my kawi single sided 750cm petrol model.Paired with a 5ah makita battery,I cut 13 odd stand-alone lonicera bushes-which I sculpt into various shapes. In some ways its better than a big petrol model for this sort of work.very nice not to breathe in petrol fumes and no real need for ear defenders. The blade length is long enough to be useful, but short enough to be agile. After a solid odd hours work, the battery was showing 3 out of 4 bars-v.impressive.This is more for soft trimming than heavy cutting into a shrub/hedge,but for privets/leylandii trimming this will work well.As to cons-a perspex ‘shield’ which steals a bit of blade real estate-took straight off. Also its a double-sided blade-pointless and potentially dangerous too. Also the safety features are a bit tiresome-you have to clutch the front guard+pushing a button with the other hand whilst also clasping the trigger too-a bit o.t.t. for me.All in all tho,a very nice bit of kit for lightweight hedge trimming. As ever with makita if you have the lxt charger+a few bl series batteries, you cant go wrong with their kit.At 55 odd quid for the bare tool, its a winner all day long.

Golden Review Award: 47 From Our UsersI bought this as I am a huge fan of the Makita LXT range and have many of the kit (drivers, drills, grinders etc).
This is a solid addition to the range and makes cutting hedges much easier. I bought it to replace a dreadful Ryobi petrol thing that died after 1 year for no discernible reason other than stubbornness (mental note… no more Ryobi in this house).
The blades on the Makita are the sharpest I have ever seen on a hedge trimmer. It will be interesting to see how the trimmer performs as the blades dull.
The motor is OK for most needs. But on thicker branches (I helped cut a neighbour’s hawthorn hedge) it will struggle. Anything up to about <1cm is doable, but I found that with tough branches that it was easy for the motor to stall and jam. Clearly though a hedge trimmer should not routinely be used for trimming thicker branches, but sometimes you hit one! My Ryobi (while it worked) and 240V mains trimmers have always had motors powerful enough to cut anything that entered the jaws. The Makita doesn't.
So for that reason I am knocking off one star. It's a great trimmer and if you are trimming normal, well maintained hedges then this will completely get rid of the need for petrol or wires. I would buy again, but would also be interest to see a 36v version (though this would be heavier).

Having bought a second battery for a makita drill, I decided to buy this hedge trimmer as it used the same battery. Absolutely fabulous piece of kit. So pleased I bought it and get more use out of my batteries. Happy.

Typical Makita… Does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Once you have the 18v system, this is a no-brainer for the average gardener. Don’t expect a battery and charger to be included for this price!

Great fun. If you have hedges to cut your hedge-cutting days will be transformed by this tool. No dangerous electrical cords to cut or tangle, and with an 18V 4Ah battery added you have enough power to do all the hedges of a large garden.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI bought the Makita because it uses the same re-chargeable batteries as my Drill. I have 3ah batteries but that didn’t prevent the machine from coping easily with my 50 metre Privet hedge, top and sides and there is still life in the battery. I thoroughly recommend the Makita DUH523Z.

Superb tool which is what you expect and get from Makita. Perfect balance, super cutting and capacity to cut. Battery life with genuine Makita 4AHr only went down one bar after 25 mins cutting.
