Surprised at the power of the trimmer from an 18v battery. Really handy being cordless no more cutting through cords.

Makita hedge trimmer has a high-quality blade which is capable of cutting the hedge and little branch beautifully. You can use an 18v battery to charge the cordless trimmer.

    That’s why I love it.

Excellent cutters, I have a 3ah battery which lasted 2 hours. These are sharp, lightweight and study. The only gripe is the safety features which means you have to nearly have 3 hands to switch it on! Probably due to EU rules so won’t necessarily blame Makita but 3 actions to turn it one is ridiculous

Excellent Makita quality as ever. Works surprisingly well. Don’t try to cut branches over 1cm with it! Battery life is good enough for most large gardens, such as mine. Easy to handle as it’s very light. Nice long blade.

What can you say? it’s a Makita and like all M products it is well engineered and SO MUCH better than anything else on the market. Lightweight, quiet and well balanced so easy to use. Worth buying a spare battery for peace of mind but to be honest I can get the job done on one charge no problem.

I was concerned it would be underpowered but not so. Happily eats through a privet hedge, not noisy, cant believe I struggled with a horrid mains Bosch hedge trimmer for so many years.

Popped a 4Ah batter on this, used for an hour and the battery meter still showed all bars. Very sharp cutting bar. Very good results. Chalk and cheese compared to the Screfix special it replaced.

Have not used it yet. Appears to be a quality piece of kit. I managed to cut through the cord of my last hedge trimmer. Lucky not to be seriously injured. Being a Makita product I am sure it is going to be excellent. You will need a battery and a charger. Once purchased the world of corded tools can be safely said goodbye to. Buy Makita in the long run you will save money.

This machine is a lot better than I was expecting, it’s lightweight and easy to handle and a complete bonus that it works with all my cordless batteries (esp as they aren’t Inc with this machine) highly recommend if you have other Makita tools.

Only down side was having to clear up all the mess I made in seconds of usage

I bought this cutter in preference to a petrol driven cutter than I had been using previously, it’s very light and easy to use and seems to cut well, I have a large hedge which it cut without needing a battery re-charge and battery life is impressive. I’m so pleased with this and am a definite convert to using cordless as an alternative.

Bought (a) because its a Makita and (b) because it uses the same Makita batteries so use with my other tools. Made easy work or the privet and Holly hedge and used less than a quarter of the battery power to do so.

Being a man I bought the longest hedge trimmer mains powered I could find – like wielding a medieval two handed sword. After 30 mins my arms gave up and needed a rest. Bought the Makita as the sensible option and glad I did so – much easier to wield and no cable! Recommended.

I associate makita with building tools and wasn’t sure about them and gardening kit. But as I already have a full suite of pro building tools of theirs including battery and charger for this I gave it a go. I’ve had countless cordless trimmers from “proper” garden suppliers and this is hands down by far the best. Really pleased. The quality is exceptional.

Typical Makita. Solid and very well made. Uses very little power and runs for ages, even on my smaller 3Ah battery. The battery puts the weight up a little compared to a similar sized 240v mains trimmer but that is more than offset by not having a trailing lead to get in the way. Much safer, especially when you’re up on steps or a ladder. Much quieter than either of our old mains trimmers (which have now gone to the tip). Good to see that the blade is a user-replaceable part. I would highly recommend.

Professional gardeners will tell you that 18V isn’t enough power for proper hedge cutting, but we have found that this tool is more than powerful enough to chop through hedge and shrub growth up to about 1cm, which is all you really need for maintenance trimming. It is light, quiet, very sharp and so easy to use, and very good value if you already have the batteries and charger from something else.

We are very pleased with this hedge trimmer. For obvious reasons the fact that it runs on a battery it is so much more convenient to use in areas where power is not available for an electric trimmer. We have used it to trim hedges, areas with over hanging tree branches, nettles and nuisance weeds. Our only negative comment would be the fact that it has to be operated with both hands as the start up requires two fingers to press the buttons on one side and the other hand to hold the cut out handle. This operation is for obvious safety which is paramount.

I decided to get another hedge trimmer after our electric one gave up. I already had a good Makita drill with 2 batteries and after finding the batteries were compatible with the Makita DUH523Z cordless lithium hedge trimmer bought the bare unit.
It is lightweight and cuts hedges without a problem and can get around an hour of battery life without recharging.
I would recommend the hedge trimmer highly.

Very well built and as powerful as mains lead machine, I used trimmer with a 5amp battery and after 3 hours of use I had only used a quarter of battery charge, The only slightly alkward bit is the safety features, to operate there is a trigger to pull, whilst holding in the second hand holding frame, but the alkward bit is also keeping a third button held in whilst in use, I used electrical tape stuck over and wrapped around to just keep button held in.

The first thing you’ll notice when you use this is just how quiet it is. It’s lightweight, easy to use and cuts through everything I put it up against. Bear in mind that it does not come with a battery, so factor that in when you’re looking that the overall price. I already sue Makita products and have batteries so it wasn’t a problem. I wasn’t sure I really needed one of these. But having used it now, I wouldn’t be without it. It just makes things quick and easy.

I am a 62 year old woman with arthritis in both my thumb joints so I was looking for a lightweight but powerful hedge trimmer and this is perfect. I already have a Makita multi-tool head and four batteries so I didn’t have to worry about the fact that this was a bare unit only and the price here matched what was on offer from tool suppliers online.

When I first ran it I thought that it was not going to be able to tackle the hedges and brambles which have overrun due to neglect around our farmhouse. It sounded quite weak, very quiet. I was totally mistaken. This tool is a joy to use and I haven’t yet found anything that it won’t cope with and, believe me, I have got through some pretty tough stuff. I have both 4Ah and 5Ah batteries, have used this solely with a 4Ah one and have been very impressed by the battery life.

I know that some reviewers have complained about the fact that you need to push a button, pull a trigger and compress the handle in order to get over the safety facilities on this trimmer and start it, but I must point out that once it is going you can remove your finger from the button. This makes it no more fiddly in use than any other corded hedge trimmer I have owned in the past (this is my first cordless one).

I am able to use it for quite some time in a session as it is so lightweight so am very, very pleased with this hedge trimmer. I cannot recommend this item highly enough if you’re looking to fulfill the criteria I had prior to purchase

I have a hedge with limited space. I keep planting around and up against it so it’s an obstacle course that’s become a real pain with my corded trimmer. Thought about petrol but it’s not a massive hedge and good as they are petrols are noisy and smelly.
I already have a Makita drill driver so realising I can use the same battery I bought this trimmer.
It’s more than powerful enough for my needs. The battery powers it with no need to recharge. Best of all it’s light and has unrestricted manoeuvrability.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersFirst important point. This is a”bare” item and as stated on the item page it has no battery or charger. One reviewer could not see the point of this and gave it one star as a result. The point is that if you already have Makita products you already have batteries and charger so you don’t need to pay for more when you don’t need them. If you have no Makita kit as a general rule expect the cost of battery and charger to be similar to the cost of the product.

Now to the review. I don’t need a hedge trimmer often but I do have a large garden surrounded by rough hedging. As it is on a hill laying out and packing up cable is a nuisance and means the job gets left so cordless is the way to go. Maybe you lose a little power and by Makita standards this is a budget model but this trimmer has been perfectly capable of gliding through the first cut of the year with no problems at all. It is lightweight (great for my very old body), easy to hold and use and the battery life is great. Being double sided its is also very quick to use at any angle. Once I had finished the job I checked the battery and still had over 50% power. This is using the 5 amp batteries I use for my mower.

I’ve had a heavy duty petrol strimmer for years, I bought this because I couldn’t be bothered to get them sharpened and reset up properly. I sparked it up and it was so quiet I didn’t think it would do a good job – boy was I wrong!? This thing is ace! I even got an adaptor to use my Bosch pro batteries on it. I’m properly impressed and can’t wait to use it again.

Nice light hedge trimmer for light work. However beware of 15mm cutting diameter. No way. In fact the instructions say and I quote “NOTICE: Do not attempt to cut branches thicker than 10mm in dia with this tool” Even 10mm is an effort. Ideal for say a privet hedge

  73. [email protected] Pollyanna Valenzuela says:

With the battery in the weight distribution is good. requires little effort to use and cuts very easily within the thickness limits given in the specification. Ive had several corded cutters in the past which were all inferior to the makita cordless.

Turn it on and you think it’s quiet and not powerful, use it and it just cuts through like a mains cutter nice and easy. Battery exceeded my expectations. Jam it into a bunch of thick branches and it will stall. Like any would.
With a makita battery in my toolbox already it’s a bargain. Five stars. Value, function, weight. All great.

Had a few batteries for other LXT units and thought I would try this as well. Much easy than the cable version (I have now thrown out!) just grab it, install a battery and go hedge trimming. Much quieter than the mains one and battery like so far seems to be good. Great for the small odd bits I would normally leave until a “big trim session”. The blade is longer than I expected but not an issue. Quite well balanced once the battery is fitted. Have now also bought the edge trimmer which is also very good.

I was not convinced that it would be that powerful but I was wrong. It is powerful but quiet and cuts through hedges like butter. Since delivery, I have been trimming bushes and hedges like nobodies business. You just plug in the battery and go, no more leads to contend with and worry that you will cut the cable.
I am only just over 5 foot tall but have no trouble operating this as it is lightweight and with a longer cutting edge you can cut more hedge in one go.

Fantastic hedge trimmers not as lightweight as my old ones my arms get tired quicker but are compatable with the makita batteries which we have for other items and the battery life on the makita products are fantastic. They don’t start to jam up and slow down if you hit a tougher branch am impressed how easy they are to use.

Super bit of kit, works with the batteries I have for all my other makita gear. Very light weight and cuts with ease. Very pleased

Typical Makita product, light weight, easy to use and ensures that the battery does not run down too quickly. I highly recommend it.

The product arrived on time well packaged and exactly as described on the site.
In use it was quiet which delighted my wife she hated my petrol multi tool. The machine was well balanced light weight but extremely efficient. The dual control , one for each hand made for a safe working and the battery lasted for the entire hedge cutting and more. ( I have a 4.0 Amp)

As a professional tradesman (joiner) Makita is my preferred brand of power tool and this hedge trimmer once again does not disappoint. Very quiet, efficient and all the necessary power to trim a standard 15m hedge with no trouble whatsoever. Battery usage is minimal too. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this product as I wouldn’t any other makita product, your pretty safe with makita.

Arrived quickly as promised. Was a relief to find my Screwdriver batteries fit perfectly and cut my entire hedge without a problem. Nice blade length made for a swift trim.

When I first pulled the trigger, I though, oh…sounds powerless.
I was wrong, it glides through my leylandii with ease.
    Very happy.

I’ve had this for about a month now and it’s great – been using it to trim all of the hedges in our garden. I got this as already have Makita drill with comparable battery and i wanted a cordless trimmer (have cut through the cable of a wired one before and didn’t want to make the same mistake). Would definitely recommend! (Please feel free to send me stuff Makita for bigging you up)

As part of COVID19 i have been taking more of an avid interest in the garden so splurged on the makita hedge trimmer. I had makita tools already so i had a few 5AH batteries. This thing is a beast it cut down anything i threw at it and by the time i had finished my garden 3 hrs later the battery was still on full bars.

Easy to use dual trigger for safety (both have to be pressed) i wish it was a tiny bit lighter but that might just be after 3 hours of work. Highly recommend it if you are in need of a hedge trimmer. I have no idea what the two big brothers of this one would do (the 36V ones) as this sorted out everything i threw at it.
