This is a beautifully made ‘wooden’ (coated MDF, in reality) larger scale role play toy.
When built, it’s sturdy, generally well made, solid-feeling, and gives a role play space with plenty of room to share – making this a good toy for families with multiple children, for adult-child interaction, for having friends over to play, and potentially for group setting (childminder/playgroup/nursery) use. Although this is a fairly large and pricey set, the supermarket doesn’t include any play food, or the magazine rack display attached to the top counter in some of the product photos (the ones shown are sold as a separate set from the brand).
The Fresh Mart Grocery Store is delivered flat packed. It arrives in an intimidatingly large box – but the parts don’t occupy more than about half of the overall area: this has a lot of safety packaging around the pieces to keep them safe and secure in transit – which worked, as nothing was received damaged. However, I was left with an entire bin bag full of non-recyclable plastic packaging after unboxing this, and whilst the box was generally a discreet plain card, a large picture sticker had been added to one side by the manufacturer, making it possible to clearly identify the contents… even for the not yet literate. If you’re trying to keep this a surprise for e.g. a birthday, it’s probably best to keep your little one/people away from the door when this turns up.
The assembly instructions are good, (on the one I received, not quite as good as those for the same brand’s Star Diner, which had each of the panels clearly identified with letter stickers, but did have hardware pieces presented in a labelled packet) and was clearly depicted and described at each stage. This can be built by one person (by design) and the only piece of assembly equipment necessary that’s not supplied is a Philips head screwdriver – I didn’t even have to seek out a box of bits, the double ended bit that came with my drill/driver worked fine.
Got this for my son’s 4th birthday. He is nearly 5 and still loves it. This is well made, well designed and looks nice in my house too! The funnest parts are the conveyor belt at the till and the wipe clean signature bits. It’s a shame it doesn’t come with anything as you definitely need to buy things to sell. The accessory pack is great, as are the other Melissa and Doug food/shop accessories. I also bought the learning resources fruit and veg to go with it. Despite not coming with any accessories this is still worth the money and worth 5 stars as it’s soooo good!
Every child dreams of running their own shop, and this amazing playset gives them the chance to do so.
It comes in several large boxes and requires a reasonable amount of putting together – instructions and tools included. But once it is together it’s incredibly sturdy, well designed and fun.
Your children will have no end of playtime with this set, just be sure that you have enough space to put it, as this is not something that can just be folded up and stashed away. I donated this set to a children’s hospice and went to see the kids use it – they thought it was amazing, and it will get used for many years to come.

Our five year-old grandson just adores this play grocery shop. It was not difficult to assemble and is really solid and should last for many years. Because of its size and weight it needs to have its own designated space as it is really too unwieldy to be bringing out and putting away when not needed.
It comes without any items for sale and without any play money. The conveyor belt actually works (but turning a handle) and there is further realism with the card scanner.
This has been a great hit and cannot recommend it highly enough. There is now a constant request: “Would you like to buy something from my shop?”
A super bit of play equipment – and worth every penny.
This is absolutely amazing bought for my 5 year old daughter as I have not seen anything like it very very realistic I don’t know who likes playing with it more me or my daughter ! Worth every single penny buy it you will not regret it !
This really is a remarkable play item – it really can’t be called a “toy” in my world! It is very substantial in all senses of the word. It is large – the counter is nearly 90 cms long and the merchandise unit is over 100 cms high. The box is large and not lightweight. It will take anyone a while to assemble. Other than a screwdriver screws etc are provided together with a small spanner, dowels etc. Anyone who has tacked IKEA type construction should be ok with it but do allow some time.
However once done this makes a very sturdy play area that should last a long time and have a value when the children have grown up if you have space for it in a home. There is a scanner/calculator/credit card machine. There is a cash draw and shelf labels. The conveyor belt works. There is a fridge freezer unit (not real). It can be played at from both sides. For any child who likes playing shops this is probably close to “as good as it gets”!
As others have said there is no cash for the till (though apparently so few transaction are cash these days that may simply be a reflection of reality). There are no goods to sell however it probably wouldn’t be hard to stock it in an imaginative way – just remember the freezer doesn’t work though :). A fairly large accessories pack is available if you really want to push the boat out.
It is a substantial price however it is a substantial product. I think my main concern would be simply space. This is going to take up quite a bit of space in any room. I doubt many houses would have the space to leave it in place. As such it may be more appropriate to multi child play areas/nurseries and the like. For home use I would suggest careful consideration of the size of this. If you have the space to leave it built – a playroom or the like – great. However I’d not want to take it apart once it has been built. The little ones loved it, the parents worried about getting the room back.
Utterly gorgeous. Not that complicated to put together. Brought the pack that goes with this and looks fab! Only downside is the “mic” doesn’t work 🙁
Oh my god this set it beautiful! Brought it for my son to go with the Melissa and Doug shop… it’s amazing!!! So good for the price, not one fault. And looks bloody good!!!
My 13 year old daughter is livid… “Why didn’t I ever get a play shop? You denied me a childhood!” Drama, there is always drama, but I can see her point – this is THE play shop that every child aspires to. Beautiful to look at and play with, and a surprising pleasure to build too – very clear instructions and well labelled parts.
As you’d expect from M&D, it is designed by be used a lot and has good attention to detail – rounded corners, recessed screw-heads and wide feet to avoid topples. You’re going to be tempted to buy the grocery play food set or the canned food set but it is easy enough to pick up cheap play food on eBay or at NCT sales if this main store set has left you skint.
It really is exceptional.
Very easy to assemble- great gift for my little girl!
On first appearance, this might seem a very expensive set but for sheer quality alone it is worth every single penny! The corners of the wooden surfaces are rounded and well made and it is reasonably easy to construct! (I did it myself and I’m rubbish at that sort of thing.)
The shelves, the till, the scanner; all are enough to give little kids an ‘authentic’ play experience. We also received the playset including all the shopping items, made by Melissa and Doug, and I can’ recommend the whole playset enough. Definitely worth the money and built to last.
This is an absolutely wonderful play Grocery Store for children. Some self-assembly is required, but the instructions were good and it was simple to put together. Once assembled (it took me just over half an hour) this felt very solid and would undoubtedly be great for a nursery, or play group, as well as for individual use. It really would withstand a lot of play.
So, what does it come with? Well, sadly no food or other accessories for the shop are included, although you can buy them separately. Also, there is no money for the till. You do get a toy credit card, a scanner which beeps and a belt, to move the food along, which you can wind, so it moves.
This is fairly expensive, but it will last for years and will encourage imaginative and role play. Accessories are fairly cheap, or, indeed, you can just empty your kitchen cupboards and provide some food. There are labels to attach to the shelves, so customers can find things, as well as a little toy fridge, to keep those bottles of milk and other produce, which needs to be kept cold. Great fun, well made and a huge hit with my testers, who think it is absolutely brilliant.
Every little detail has been thoroughly thought out – from the real working conveyor belt (no batteries needed you use a crank) to the little plastic label clips that fit onto the shelves.
There is a till shelf underneath. And the scanner is quality made and very sweet. Unusually for Melissa & Doug toys, the scanner does require 2 x AA batteries however I have decided not to use them and it has affected play at all. It also includes a little Magnadoodle-type screen and a magnet ‘pen’ so you can write on the screen.
The overall size is smaller than I thought it would be which is probably a good thing as it’s in the middle of the playroom. Because it includes play on all sides this is not something you can really push up against a wall so you can access all sides but you can fit at least 2 or 3 children playing on it simultaneously. I’m assuming it’s aimed at nurseries and pre-schools but no reason why you couldn’t have this in your home if you have space for it. You need about a 2 square metre foot space for it. Although it’s sturdy it is still light and can be moved around in carpet if you wish. It’s the right height for my large 3 year old. She’s been playing with it for hours and hours.
Melissa & Doug provide an accessory pack (available separately) for this supermarket https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073FCG1WG Although it’s not essential to have the extra set it does go perfectly with the supermarket set and includes a magazine rack that clips onto the shelf. You can of course use any of your own plastic or wooden food and money works just as well.
I would highly recommend this supermarket set. It’s brilliant value for money and will encourage tonnes of role play for many years to come.
Don’t spend your money on anything else but this, I promise you 🙂

It’s probably the closest toy trolley one can buy next to the real thing! Amazingly well made and hard wearing, this trolley will probably be one of those items my kids will hand down to theirs and so one because it will just last forever. At last a mini supermarket trolley on the market which is really robust. We have purchased several other brands and the wheels kept falling off!! This one should stand the rigours of our busy playground in our big nursery. The children love it and it is extremely life like. I might even order another one once funds allow!

My 2 year old daughter absolutly loves her real shopping trolley and has sooooo much fun playing with it. I have bought plastic trolleys in the past and should not have wasted my money – this will last for years. It takes a little longer to get aroind the shops due to other peoples lovely comments. It also encourages my daughter to walk a bit further without the nagging as she is more involved.

Bought this item for my 18months old, shopping has become an amazing experience rather than a nightmare that it had become. My daughter fills her trolley with fruits and veg and we always end up buying things from her trolley as she’s becoming quite the pro at shopping!

My 17 month old son loves this trolley.I had read lots of reviews of other trolleys. But this trolley had the best it was slighty more expensive but it will last. Bought this for my grandsons 4th. birthday, it was an instant hit.Hand held game left on the floor, just going to order another one for my sisters granddaughter for Christmas and its only Febuary. This trolley is hardly educational, but all the kids love it – girls and boys alike. Very robust, will take a lot of punishment.
