Having played Microsoft Flight Simulator X since forever, the new iteration required a new PC (check simulation requirements). So, not a cheap upgrade! The simulation has an annoying glitch that requires the DVD to be in the drive to use the simulation. I understand there are fixes for this but it shouldn’t happen in the first place. Gameplay is, however, superb with scenery and dynamic features rendering cleanly and seamlessly (check for PC requirements as above). The aircraft are a little skittish and great care has to be taken getting used to handling them with a (new) flight yoke. WiFi with a bandwidth of 50MBPS is required to play in real world scenarios. Most people’s WiFi is probably below this optimum speed (mine included). Instructions and guides are not, in my opinion, as accessible as they might be. I have only been using this simulation for a couple of weeks and so am still in a steep learning curve. All that said, I can only recommend this software highly and, without the glitches, this would be a 5-star review.

Liked – fantastic graphics, disliked very long installation time. Also you have to leave a disc in the drive for it to do auto updates, was delivered on time as requested.

Takes an age to load on a reasonably high end gaming pc.

Benefit of disk version versus download is therefore marginal.

Microsoft support not very helpful BUT Aerosoft (mentioned in manual) brilliant.

Haven’t played computer games for years although I’m into 3D printing (FDM & Resin) which can take hours to produce one of your designs, so I decided to buy Microsoft flight simulator to use up some of those hours waiting.
One major issue my PC wasn’t man enough to run it, a few pounds (quite a few actually) further on I now have a super fast PC, was it worth spending all that money on?..well yes IMHO it was.
What a fantastic breathtaking beautifully made simulation never would I have thought that I could fly an aeroplanecan’t land very well but that’s a minor detail.
The down sides..flipping heck nearly 5 hours to load 10 DVD’s and then another 4 hours even with a 74mbs download speed to download 84gb of extra content.come on Microsoft get with modern technology and improve on it.
Even the start up time to run the game gives you time to make a cup of tea and 2 slices of toast AND make a doctors appointment, joking aside it needn’t be that slow.
After all that though it is well worth 120 for the premium deluxe version.

PC specialists built one for me, 1200 (PC only) 10 disc program takes about 5 hours to load, down load version
will take at least 7 hrs. You will need at least 150 GB of space on preferably a 1 TB ssd hard drive. Also you must
have English USA running. When you have got this far it will amaze you. Scenery is fantastic.

Much more detailed and realistic than it’s predesessor as you would expect. The DVD’s took almost 3 hours to load and the expected 30GB of additional content turned into nearer 100GB after the patches since launch and the free UK/ Ireland add on pack is downloaded and installed. A lengthy installation process even with a fibre connection, but no hitches were encountered with the downloading process.
The game performs pretty much as the release video’s suggested although it will take many hours of use to evaluate properly.

The game is great! The graphics are detailed and the aircraft handles well. I left the laptop on to download and install the game – took about 10h in total, but no major problems with the process and worked well ever since. Just to note, to control the aircraft, at least a basic joystick with 3 axis is needed. I couldn’t use the just the keyboard for steering.

This software is amazing, I fly light aircraft and this software is like the real thing, all the buttons work, you can fly anywhere in the world, land at any airport, set any weather conditions, the ATC is accurate,
It really is just like the real thing, I also have the sailtek yoke, radio box, auto pilot box, pedals, and switch box, which all make it more realistic, Instrument flying is also great, you can practice your instrument approaches using this, they are just like the real thing, Highly recommended

This is incredible, yes you need quite a high spec machine but the graphics and the realism is brilliant. A friend who is a commercial airline pilot tried flying the A320 and he was very impressed and the handling and realism. It takes forever to install and can be a bit hit and miss but eventually I got it to run. Having the disc in the cd rom all the time is not so good. Even though this version is less than a year old there is tons of free content available online as well as quite a lot of overpriced content in the Flightsim Marketplace. Its very easy to become hooked and before you know it your setting it to fly with the autopilot in realtime or trying manually. Very clever and totally absorbing

I purchased Intel core i9 10850 chip, Asus ROG Maximus XII Hero motherboard, 1 Gig internal SSD hard disk and 32 Gig Corsair Veng. RGB RAM to be able to run this software optimally. A Gaming PC with inferior specification might negatively effect performance.
However It is so good that it justifies extra expenses.

The flight realism and whole world graphics of FS 2020 are in a completely different league to the old FS X. Every aircraft and it’s cockpit is rendered to represent the real world aircraft, (confirmed by watching various YouTube videos made by real world pilots who rave about it). The world itself is rendered to such a level of detail that views are virtually as you would get from a real aircraft. However, to get these superb effects you do need to be running a fairly high spec PC, to achieve a good performance in the High’ or ‘Ultra’ settings. In the ‘Low End’ setting there is a markedly reduced quality and I suspect lower spec PCs may even struggle to give an acceptable performance without turning of many of the scenery features. If you haven’t used a FS before this will also take some time to master, but there are quite a few YouTube videos out there that are excellent for beginners and seasoned FS enthusiasts alike. You will also need reasonably good flight controllers (joystick and throttle controller at least) in order to get the most out of it. Personally I can’t see it being possible to control using just a keyboard and mouse, although if that’s what you’re used to, I’m sure it must work out. Happy flying..

My biggest issue is you have to leave the disk one in the drive to boot the program every time.
The online purchase/download doesn’t require a disk in the computer to boot so why should this need one??? GGGgggrrrrr.
If I had known this I would have purchased the download version.
The booklet and instruction sheet is very disappointing.
I expected better than this from Microsoft.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. Get the download version. Nothing to be gained at all having a disk set.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersI bought this copy from AMAZON and received it from a company called THE GAME COLLECTION. On installation the second disc of ten failed twice. I informed Amazon who in turn told me to speak to The Game Collection which took awhile. Eventually The Game Collection sent me a email and told me to get in touch with Aerosoft. Germany) After may calls and emails I got no further, as I was told that, The Game Collection do not exchange or refund. I paid over 138 for this simulator bought on the 18th Sept it is now the 28th Oct I am stuck with a game I cannot play,The game Collection has stopped corresponding, and I have just submitted a refund to Amazon which will take who knows how long. I was informed that if I bought this simulator direct from Microsoft it would only have cost 109 and if anything was wrong they would sort it right away. Both my wife and I have been involved in retail and never heard the term ( We Don’t Give Refunds or Exchanges ).

If you look online there is a wealth of fixes to all the bugs, (and there is a few), but most people seem to have a problem with the download/installation. My experience is, read all the ‘fixes/settings that are suggested and implement them prior to download/install. (It will save you a whole load of grief)! I did 4, (yes 4), installs before I found what was wrong and I found that out from Aerosoft themselves-it was not mentioned on any forum I visited. After that I have had no problems, I even do not require Disk 1 in the drive as other have had to do! Before you do anything bad, make sure you have all the Xbox services set to Automatic, that did the trick for me. The graphics are stunning, (I am running it on a high end PC, though). VERY real feeling to it compared to FSX.

Golden Review Award: 32 From Our UsersThe 10 discs took a while to install – that was the easy bit.
Next , entering one’s key – that wasn’t too difficult.
    But now the fun started.
The manual told me I also had to install a launcher. So after the key was entered ….
    nothing happened !
I got thrown back to the ‘shop page trying to sell you things ‘ This is the first microsoft ‘so called app’ I purchased
I couldn’t find any exe s in the simulators folder – so where was it ???
Did I need to install it again???
The tel number given on the receipt didn’t answer – googling didn’t help. so I went for a walk .
When I returned my blood pressure had lowered a bit and by shere fluke I came upon the app update section in w10 – and there it was and said that some download had failed! I refreshed and then the download began , hopefully it was the launcher; this took another 5 mins.
And yes, suddenly I was in, but then it confused me about a Xbox disk I needed else I got bombed out. As I had ten disks I tried number 1
And suddenly it continued to another stage where I was told to download another 18 gig of extras .
I daren’t exit the program, so had to wait another 4+ hours for the download to finish.
The I was finally in. BUT ! when I restarted the pc and reloaded the program I had to download an update which also took another 4+ hours.
I gave it 4 stars as I’m an ardent FS fan and the graphics are really superb ; the AI isn’t working properly yet but it seems the software is being updated.
If you enter the developers mode you can cancel crash detection – what a relief!

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersTo be honest for me the very long install went very well followed by a 19gb upgrade to the deluxe edition. Running on an i7 processor and a 1070 nvidia Graphics card with SSD and 32gb of ram I thought I was going to need to upgrade my system to get the best out of this software. I have to say without altering any settings the software runs very well at 4k with high settings. Very happy about that. One annoyance is after the install it linked the game to the wrong email address, I had no other options so next week I will speak to Microsoft about this, but I’m not expecting any help about this.
One thing that has made me angry, I have used my Microsoft Sidewinder Pro for many years, it’s a controller that is perfect for this sim having a throttle on a rolling control and a twist on the stick ideal for rudder. Plenty of buttons for a lot of your needed switches to hand. NOT COMPATIBLE, it feels like Microsoft doing what they have done over the years when they stop support on many very good bits of hardware.
Due to this I decided I would buy the Honeycomb yoke and some pedals. As of 30/08/20 there are no Honeycombe yokes or pedals available anywhere in the uk, and I believe this is the same problem in Canada.
Some slight problems in the game but this is to be expected. I think over the coming months there will be lots of fixes and updates. Nothing in my issues would have stopped me buying this and I would recommend buying this superb graphically accurate bit of software

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI was brought this for my birthday after owning all MS Flight Simulators since 95 and XPlane 11 amongst others.

There’s been a lot of reviews saying about its not 100% accurate and takes ages to download. I’m not going to go against this as they are right, but it is realistic enough to be able to recognise where you are and in terms of the technology it’s new tech so it’ll only get better.

They do make it clear that a decent internet connection is required and they do say in various places that it uses a lot of space.

Overall, I can’t complain, graphics are incredible, and after looking into my PPL I’m hoping this will help me practice flights etc.

  38. Anonymous says:

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI tried to buy this from Amazon on Disc, since my internet connection isn’t fantastic, but Amazon failed to get it for release day, so I ended up buying it direct from Microsoft and just putting up with the fact it would take a day to download. That day is due to my internet connection, not due to Microsoft issues which some people report.

Once downloaded, it has to be said, it is very impressive in some areas, though lacking polish in others. The graphics are, quite simply, stunning. It’s not just the level of detail they have in towns, airports etc. but it’s how smooth everything runs. It’s worth acknowledging I’m running it on a high end machine, Intel i7 (7700 series), 32Gb of RAM, SSD, GTX1080 graphics board, so you would expect it to run well, but the important thing to note is it runs noticeably better than XPlane.

I’m getting more consistent higher frame rates with MS Flight Sim than I do with XPlane, so while you do need a great PC to run it well (I’m on High graphics settings across the board – suspect I’d need an NVIDIA 2000 series to run ultra), the point is it runs better than the competition, and the visuals are better as well.

Also impressive is the flight model. I do have a Private Pilots License, so have a good handle on how flying a Cessna 172 feels, and it is remarkably accurate. While obviously that doesn’t mean I can say things like the airliners feel like they really do, it’s not a difficult assumption to make.

What is less good is some of the fairly blatant bugs. The most crippling one I’ve found has been with the A320 and it’s auto-pilot. While the flight planning is terrific, and the Flight Management Computer in the sim sets itself up automatically based on the flight planning (this is much better than in XPlane), the problem is it is just hopelessly unreliable. Vertical Navigation and Auto Throttle is really glitchy, and I’ve found it impossible to complete a flight without needing to do significant amounts of hand flying.

And there’s various things throughout like that.

I’m hoping that they are all relatively minor bugs that they will knock down quickly, since it does limit some of the things you would choose to do with the sim.

Right now I’d say it’s excellent for VFR flight, and in the 172 it is genuinely remarkable. But they need to add polish to it.
