What is the best position for the Smart Indoor Camera?

Ideally, place the camera on a flat surface (table, shelf, etc.) at a height between 1m and 1.5m opposite the front door. This will allow it to detect movement and best capture peoples’ faces.

How does the Smart Indoor Camera surveillance work?

As soon as somebody is detected, you are notified in real time on your smartphone. If the face is already known by the Camera, it will provide you with the name of the person identified. If the person is unknown, you will also be notified.

Can I add several cameras to the same house or to the same Netatmo account?

Yes, you can install as many cameras as you like and control them from the same app (front door, children’s bedrooms, etc.). In the same way, several people may access the same camera account.

How does the facial recognition work?

When the Smart Indoor Camera identifies a face for the first time, it is marked with a question mark on the app. However, you can create a new profile, giving the person a first name, and configure their confidentiality settings.

Does the Smart Outdoor Camera work at night or in darkness?

Yes, the camera continues to film in high resolution thanks to its Infrared night vision.

I had to but a WiFi range extender on the insider of the very close to wear the camera was mounted.
Easy installation, easy to move the unit to adjust picture area.
Good picture quality and movement sensor responds well. The unit has a built in movement activated light so is very good on the steps leading up to front doo

I have this and the outdoor version . It is simple to set up and works without fees .
I use one to monitor my elderly mum at home so I know she is okay , however I haven’t used it to send any notifications but I am sure it will work . The outdoor version is great for monitoring wildlife like foxes deers hedgehogs etc but you will need good internet. My internet was useless and it kept going offline but with a faster speed it has been fine . Please note that the video quality improves once downloaded. My main concern is that the camera can become very hot at times during a heatwave so I turn it off as a precaution. Mine is over 5 yrs old and still working well .

Stupidly easy to install and set up within the app.
The alarm runs self tests on connections and status which useful.

I only wished it did combined smoke and monoxide alarms for the price.

I found the camera connected to my BT internet with no difficulty. Pictures are good although a little yellow on my phone. Very good at identifying and marking separately the humans, the animals, and the vehicles that it sees. It recorded clips of deer, foxes and a hedgehog, correctly marking them all as animals. I have set it up so that it only alerts me when a human comes into the detection zone, but records animals at night as well. So I can see the wildlife without being annoyed by false alerts. Many recording options, none of which need a subscription, unless your Dropbox useage already pushes you into the subscription area.

It’s not designed as a porch light or video doorbell but it pretty much does the same job and better than the alternatives. The motion detection is superb, you can set it to notify you if it sees people, cars, animals, or general motion, but you can also set those things individually to off. It will still record them but not bother you with a notification. It’s super easy to share recordings to your photoroll, and the integration with Homekit is very good too.

The floodlight is dimmable and can be set to only operate in the dark when motion is detected, which makes it a reliable porch light. The camera records in IR at night so it doesn’t matter how bright you have the light set. Smart lights on Homekit have slightly dodgy geo-location detection so the Phillips Hue porch light I replaced with this did not always work when I came home. This works 100%, plus it notifies me on my Apple Watch almost the exact second it sees me approaching the house.

A feature I wasn’t expecting was a built in microphone, so it records audio too. It has a pretty good field of view and was easy enough to install. It would’ve been nice if Netatmo had included a cut-out in the plastic cover for running surface mounted power to it neatly, but I managed to drill and saw my own for a neat finish. It’s tough plastic though.

I went fo this rather than their video doorbell because it is cheaper, easier to install (no bell wire or chime required) and includes a light. If Netatmo were smart, they’d work out that pairing a wifi bell-push with this item would make a better video doorbell/porch light solution than their existing video doorbell and a separate porch light.

It has local storage for recordings, so even if your internet is out of action it will still record. A power cut is its only vulnerability.

This is my 3rd Netatmo product – the other two are outdoor camera/lights installed 18 months ago. I already use the Netatmo app, so this indoor camera was incredibly easy to install. Nice looking camera too. We’ll see going forward how the camera operates.

I bought four of these cameras for placing around the outside of my home, as yet have only set up two but overall reasonably happy with how things are working.
Set up was straightforward but you will need a pretty robust Wi-Fi signal around your house.
If you have weak signal inside there no chance its working when you get outside.
I use 3 EERO pro’s to provide my mesh Wi-Fi signal and suspect I will have to purchase maybe one more to increase the Wi-Fi signal.
I bought these cameras because I was sick of subscription fees and poor performance, I also wanted them to link to Apple HomeKit.
So far so good. may add another review when the other camera are installed and had more time to play with all the features of HomeKit has to offer.

Very good CCTV camera that doesn’t require ongoing monthly storage payments. Once you get this camera set up correctly with good WiFi connected it is a really high quality camera. I have recently bought a second one to capture a different angle of my drive. The only minor downside is the sd card is only 8gb so will only hold a couple days footage before it gets full and stops working due to insufficient storage capacity. I would definitely recommend buying a 32gb micro sd card. Since doing so, I’ve never had any problems with storage. It is very good at detecting animals, people, cars etc and each of these can be turned off if for example you only want to be notified when the camera detects motion from people. There is a lot of other personalised features such as being able to turn the camera light on or off with motion, being able to select a section of the camera view that you want to detect motion. For example this is really handy for adjusting so it doesn’t go off when neighbours leave the house. Also detects sound so footage can be watched back with clear audio. Pretty good camera if you ask me and doesn’t require ongoing payments.

Replaced this for an existing normal flood light, setting up was fairly easy all done via the app, the live streams can be un-pixelated sometimes although still okay, however once it’s recording something or someone the downloadable version is always perfect full 1080p HD quality. Clips are saved on the app or cloud I think, Sound is also very easily picked up even from a distance not muffled or anything it’s quite impressive, You have activity zones which only allow the camera to alert you and record within your chosen Area, the light is very bright lights up my full drive no problem you can also change the intensity of the light stronger or dimmer. Notifications when someone comes into contact with the device is around 2-3 seconds so you’re alerted rather fast, it can also connect with Amazon echos as security monitors for you’re home, asking Alexa to show you will display a live feed, this lasts for random periods of time not sure why, sometimes well over a few hrs others 20 minutes but you can always ask Alexa to show you again and it’ll pop back up. The Delay with the echos is slower around 6 seconds from someone triggering it, might not sound long but I managed to get from my car and into the back door to scare my Mrs as she was casually watching me close my boot. The Picture quality on the echos is always spot on however always in high detail unlike the phones slightly downgraded look on live stream. You can manually turn on and off the light via the app or set auto for people, cars, pets or random things or tune for what you want to be notified about, the camera can only be seen close up anyone further away wouldn’t even know it’s a camera which explains the weird things I spot when people don’t realise. The Picture angle of the camera is okay if it’s pointed precisely where you want it it’s not wide angled like some other cctv systems but it covers a good field of view. The light can also be turned left, right up and down Before locking into into position.

I have been looking for an outdoor security camera for a while but many of them are subscription only. I am not paying just so they can store my video/images. Then my outdoor PIR light finally gave up the ghost so I found this. Perfect, light and camera in one.
The light is bright enough to light up my whole back garden but not so bright that it spills into neighbors gardens.
The camera is excellent. It comes with a 16gb SD card and will upload footage to your Dropbox account for off camera security in case the camera is tampered with. The night vision is unbelievably good, again, I can see my whole back garden. The device can easily recognise the difference between car, human, animal and you can set individual alerts/recordings for each. You can have up to 4 alert zones, which is plenty.
The camera was simple to connect to my WiFi and Dropbox and didn’t take long to fix to my wall. I used the existing wiring from my old light.
The one thing that is fiddly, and this is picky. Is the screw to fix the camera to the mount is in a tricky sport and I kept dropping the screw eventually losing it. Netatmo customer service was brilliant and sent me out a free replacement. So top tip in securing the cam to the mount, is undo the camera bracket completely using the 2 small allen screws either side and remove it. Then fix the bracket to the mount before fixing the camera back to the bracket.

I would definitely buy this product again and highly recommend it.

This was purchased due to its all-in-one design and subscription-free nature.

There are those that will whinge that they don’t want to pay for DropBox or an FTP server; these people should buy a ring or a nest camera if they don’t want to sort their own storage. Failing that you can locally install a 32GB card in the camera that should be good for around a week. Thieves would have to physically rip the camera off the wall or have prior knowledge of the card location to see you off there.

Personally I think the option to set up your own storage is great; I use FTP to my NAS and also then get to make use of a raft of other benefits having a NAS offers.

The algorithms that identify whether a person, animal or vehicle has been seen are usually very reliable, they’re not going to be bulletproof because a computer is recognising real-life events. That being said, I wouldn’t want to go to dinner with the bloke who wrote them!

The spotlight is great, very bright but also dimmable, and you can set it to only come on for certain events (e.g. a person or a vehicle but not every bloody cat that wanders past).

The picture quality is also good. It claims 1080P and I see no reason to dispute this having reviewed old footage. It does suffer a little a night, but it’s not loads, and show me a camera (that doesn’t cost thousands) that doesn’t suffer in poor lighting conditions.

I have never had any reliability issues to date and I’ve had my cameras (I have 5 of them, so pretty well tested) over a year. Fitting was very easy – those who’ve complained obviously have trouble with putting 2 screws into masonry, a couple more in the bracket to hold the device in place and the usual live, neutral and earth.

As for lag and WiFi disconnects, I’ve never experienced any of those symptoms and I live in a busy neighbourhood with plenty of other networks around to cause noise. I can only assume those who have need to either change their WiFi channel or upgrade their router.

The app is both good and reliable, the one thing that’s often overlooked is the extra data you’ll use for push notifications. If your camera is in a high-traffic area and you’ll be getting notified of each sighting, it’s not necessarily a bad thing (I’d still want to know), but it will eat more of your phone’s data plan. If you’ve got more than 1-2GB per month then you’ll probably be fine, including your normal usage, but clearly everyone is different. I’d say my Netatmo notifications use circa 300-500MB of my data a month, dependant of what’s going on around my house. That’s also with 5 cameras bear in mind.

In summary a great, customisable, all-in-one camera & light without the extra subscription fees that come attached to some other manufacturers products.

Great product. It’s exactly what I was looking for. The night vision is great but my only comment is that when the automatic light comes on the night vision turns itself off and the images can then be very poor at night (probably dependant on where the light is placed).

The plus side are numerous. Looks very stylish, excellent app, fantastic recognition between animals, humans and cars. In addition no subscription fee.

The integration with Dropbox is a bonus with automatic upload.

I’ve got mine connected to Google home and can request the feed straight to my tv via Chromecast. Very simple.

The install is very simple, I simply removed the old external light and put this on. My wall is not flat (rough granite) so I did have a large gap that I simply filled in.

Mine is placed about 7ft up and the downside to this is the light is very bright on full and can dazzle you, worth it being higher. I simply wanted the camera to be plug and play from the previous light fitting so willing to live with this.

Overall very happy, and would recommend. I previously bought a high level alternative well known internet based one but this has been head and shoulders better. As with most there is a lag on the live view. In my case it’s about 7 seconds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable, robust and secure.

I’ve had 2 of these cameras, front and rear of house, for 2 and a half years, they are very solid, and heavy. I’ve had a few of issues/frustrations in that time but would re-purchase if they went kaput completely, even with my 4* review, as I’ll discuss. Frustrations have mainly been due to wifi – not the fault of the cameras. Aside from wifi, the problem I had with my front camera (it stopped recording) turned out to be the memory card giving up. This took a little while to work out – turning on off on off etc, troubleshooting over the net. The card was 8GB when I removed it (easily done) – it had become defective due to use. I live on a busy street. I bought a 32GB card, applied the recommended super lube (tracked down in the states) and refitted, it worked again immediately.

I think I’m on to my 3rd 32GB card for this busy camera – I don’t find that an issue – it’s still cheaper than being bound to a monthly cost. I don’t need to link with Dropbox (free version) to store video like I did initially. The 32GB card easily stores a week’s worth of video for me to scroll through on the App. I deleted Dropbox. This front camera is reliable due to a strong my wifi signal, and beside the main router. I have captured all sorts outside, video of my car being ransacked, my security light making someone think twice from trying my car door handle, someone taking a pee at my front door (unbelievable I know), these incidents being at night and difficult to identify people due to the hoody uniforms and grainy picture quality – you only really get an idea of what is going on with the night vision, a policeman told me you would need to spend 1000s to get decent night vision. I’m sure some night video content is not captured, and sometimes there is lag, so a video does not fully capture a person’s journey in/out of shot. To be fair, these are instances outside of my garden, but has been frustrating at times, e.g. camera might capture someone get out of a car on the street, but does not capture them later when leaving. In daylight I captured someone pinching a child car seat that I’d left at my front door to dry in the sun after washing. I took a screenshot of the person (great daytime quality when people are close to camera) and went door-to-door with a pic to find the person as the police were not helpful. I found the culprit and got my seat back.

My rear camera is hit and miss due to my wifi. I installed additional boosters for wifi but these are still hit and miss at the rear of my property. I do have spells of wondering what I’m missing, sometimes I’ll get motion updates, sometimes not. Most frustrating when I have walked in front of the camera and there is nothing captured, or a week without an update. This is not the fault of the camera – I have Virgin Broadband for info, 2x boosters are Belkin. I have had to re-scan the system’s barcode for this camera the most to re-link it to the internet, not ideal going up a ladder. I still use the 8GB memory card in this camera, I have had zero problems with that card – although it is not kept too busy, even when things appear to be fully working. Most frustrating with this rear camera and the wifi problem is that my live stream is generally most likely not working – my front camera is however very reliable for live streaming. I have noticed the rear camera functions better when the kids are not using Netflix etc. So ultimately the camera can’t be blamed for another providers hit and miss wifi signals!

Camera install is easy, I don’t do anything electrical, can’t change a plug for instance, yet installing the cameras was easy – I just followed the YouTube video, I am a confident DIYer though. I already have other fllodlights so I keep the floodlight feature turned off on my cameras so can’t comment on that. The sound feature is good – my driveway is 12 metres and you can just make out bits of conversation if cars are not driving past at the same time, in the immediate area of the camera the sound is perfect, and has been very useful. The App is great, I have the cameras set to pick up people, rather than cars/animals/motion, just to save video space. I find myself scrolling through the App across the day, easy to use, and this has improved over time also with updates. Best of all there are no monthly fees, I’d purchase again.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe Netatmo Welcome is a fantastic little home security device. I have owned the Canary in the past and tried the Logitech ones.

The Netatmo fits where everyone else has failed. Whilst it does suffer from reliability issues as per any other home security connected device, it on average does what it needs to.

What sets this device apart is that it doesn’t store the data on the company’s servers. It stores it on an internal micro SD card along with cloud storage on Dropbox for example. This makes consumers feel at ease given all the scandals about companies storing your video data.

The device can get hot when in use during a hot day – as it is continuously monitoring. So don’t put it in a place where it can’t ventilate.

The night vision is great – when it comes on. My first device had an issue with the night vision, so had to get a replacement but the new one works just fine. It comes on when the area is dark and turns off in the light.

You can train the device to start recognising if the movement is animal or nothing, which is a great feature as it learns. I have noticed less notification due to our cat coming into the room. It continues to record as long as there is motion and this is uploaded to the MicroSD and the cloud service you are using. There is no issue with running out of space onboard the machine as it’ll overwrite when it is full. Furthermore, it is easy for you to delete the files on your dropbox if you are running out of space.

The device can recognise faces, though you should not point it where a tv is playing as otherwise it will continuously tell you that there is an unrecognised face.

I note that the automatic proximity sensor is not always accurate. It is supposed to use the phone data to geo tag and tell if you are home or not. There are times when you are home with your phone but it needs to see your face before it determines a user is home or not.

Overall, as this is a fee-less home security device which does what it sets out to do, i rate it 5/5 and would recommend for anyone getting into the home security game.

Bought as an indoor camera but it sits on the window sill looking outwards on the front. The picture quality is excellent and the app on the phone is easy to use. It looks just like a good quality candle. The device can get a little warm but this is no concern. I suggest making sure there is some ventilation or space around it.

Update: Having added two small rubber washers either side of the supporting bolts and the camera no longer slips down.

Installation was easy enough, the bracket isn’t the best design though, setup was easy. Cannot really fault that side of things. In use, it’s great but six months down the line and I have two niggles that are really annoying.

Niggle the first: the camera slides down everso slowly over time. Before anyone thinks “you’ve not tightened it up properly”, maybe I haven’t, but I’ve used a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 7Nm which is way above what a bolt of that size should be torqued down to – at least from what I’ve been able to find. It definitely feels like I’m doing it too tight. The slippage is very gradual, over weeks, but it seems to be a feature? Maybe someone can tell me that I’m not being firm enough? The fix would seem to be a better bracket design, notches maybe?

The second gripe is how alert areas are defined. Why only rectangular areas? Surely the software is analysing the image all the time to detect motion. Where I have it installed it is on an angle both horizontally and vertically, and at the front of the house. So the alerting area really needs to be a triangle for proper coverage, otherwise to get full coverage of my drive/house entrance, I need to create a rectangle shape that spills into the street on the upper corner, meaning any alerting triggers whenever anyone, or a dog, walks down the street. Seems like a small thing to address, but it’d mean that anyone installing at any sort of angle would have full flexibility for defining the alerting area. Also, the behaviour when creating the areas is different between the mobile app and the web site – not a problem, just different.

It arrived promptly, and was well packaged. It was super super easy to install, and after a lengthy software update (I thought the camera was malfunctioning) it now works flawlessly and has great night vision too.

It sometimes recognises faces incorrectly, but it is learning and it will take time. At least it recognises it is a face and doesn’t alert you to every movement going on in the room like some cameras.

I love the fact that I don’t have to have a subscription service to use this camera and can link it to my Dropbox account and manage the footage from there.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve had this product for 3 weeks now and it’s working perfectly. It replaces a simple motion detecting outdide light and even in this capacity it’s an improvement – very bright and clear. The camera is equally effective. It’s at its best in daytime (full colour) mode but at nighttime/infra red (black and white) it gives an adequate image. I receive alerts to my phone and a copy of the video recording on my home NAS (hard drive) whenever a person is detected; for my dogs and other animals/birds I get a video recording but no alert. There have been occasional false alerts when a dog looks vaguely humanoid – but probably less than 5% of the time so not really a problem. I’ve so far never had a person mistaken for an animal and as far as I’m aware I’ve never had a person missed entirely; i.e. all expected movements have been present as expected.

Installation was straightforward with very clear instructions. But a word of warning – read and follow the instructions to avoid disappointment. Don’t cut the cable tie before you’re told to – it’s there for a reason! Also use the supplied protective bag – it looks flimsy but it does the job and stops delicate corners getting damaged during installation.

It’s a bit frustrating that there is no easy way to test the field of view before you actually install the camera as you need a mains supply to get any output from the camera. So consider rigging up a temporary mains feed (live, neutral and earth) to the camera before you drill a hole through your wall just to check it’s in the right place. Be prepared to move the camera if you need to bacause it is important to get it right to avoid unwanted background activity.

The camera automatically records to an internal memory card and sends images to my phone. But it’s obviously much more secure to get the recording onto a remote hard drive so it won’t disappear if the camera is stolen/destroyed – and there are full instructions on how to do this if like me you have a home back-up hard drive (NAS) permanently running. I’m far from a technophile but with a bit of perseverence I’ve managed to get the video feeds to my NAS using FTP. No idea what this means but it works and the videos are there on my hard drive to prove it! Select “settings” on the app and then “cloud strorage”; choose “FTP” and when the app prompts you this is what it needs: – “Hostname” is the IP address of the NAS; “Port” defaults to 21 which worked for me; “User” and “password” are what you use to log on to your NAS; and I set up a directory called Netamo on the NAS and specified that as “Save to”. Note – be careful of capital letters in naming the destination drive as the naming is case sensitive.

So far so good. If it all goes horribly wrong I’ll update this review. But based on my positive experience I’m adding an internal Smart Netamo camera tomorrow. Fingers crossed it’s as good as this external version.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHow does it work? As most cameras of this type, you connect it to a power supply (recommended to replace an outdoor light fixture) and then connect it to your WiFi (that has an internet connection). It will start transmitting images to the Netatmo servers (through the internet). Download the app on your phone (which again connects to the Netatmo servers through the internet) and see those images from anywhere in the world.

    Why is it the best?
1)Only smart camera with NO subscription fees, most smart cameras like Ring or Nest will need a subscription to either store the images or even access your camera
2)It has internal memory (probably an SD card but not replacable) so if your internet connection is down it will still record events locally and synchronise them with the servers at Netatmo once the internet is back up
3)Even if your camera is damaged or stolen the event was synchronised with the servers at Netatmo
4)If that’s not enough for you, you can also set it up to additionally save images on a local NAS (Network Attached Storage) (if you know what a NAS is then you should have no problems setting it up) so even if its destroyed while the internet is down the images are still there
5)If that’s not enough for you, you can also set it up to save images on your Dropbox

But the best are still to come…
6)Why is it smart? It can actually tell appart humans from animals and cars so you can have it alert you accordingly. Too many alerts are a failure point in most securrity systems as you learn to ignore them. If your Presence says “Person Seen” then a person is standing in front of your camera (and not the shadow of a tree moving as with most cameras)
    7) Extensive alert settings. Customisable alerts such as, record when there are animals, cars and people but only alert me if people are seen between 1900 and 0700
    And…
8)It has a light thats also smart! Unlike a motion sensor light, you can set up the light to turn on only when people are seen, or people and animals or for any motion according to your needs!
    Want more?
9)It also records sounds with all recordings (unlike some other brands that only record sound when you respond to an event). So when you see an event at a later stage with two suspicious characters snooping around you can hear if they said “check if there’s an alarm” or “we are at the wrong address”
    10) If you need to, with a touch of the download icon you can instantly download on your device a video of a specific event and send it where you want through email or any other app you might have on your phone.
11)There’s also live view (that is 4-5 seconds behind because the signal has to travel through the internet as explained above)

This is an expensive bit of kit, and some would argue that it’s vital and some would not. If you’re one to worry or feel uneasy about the security of your home if it’s in a certain area for instance then this is well worth some research. After reading through the instructions well and familiarising myself with the set up I found it all working in quite a quick time. It’s got a lot going on, with wi-fi connection, video, sound and motion, and it all (so far) has been working seamlessly. I’ve had no connection issues or instances of loss of video.

Once you get past the initial “loading” of familiar people’s faces for recognition (so as not to trigger anything) it happily sits there, working happily and you do find yourself forgetting it’s even there. You set up your account and then relevant video is sent there and I’ve found no problems with the cloud storage. Overall I’m very happy with this and would recommend it.

I previously tried a cheap “no-name” security camera from here with equal specs, but it was a real bit of plastic junk. By contrast, Netatmo Welcome is really well made, designed, and packaged, and doesn’t look too out of place in a home. Maybe having a black power cable instead of a white one would make it more discreet.

Positioning the camera is critical, as the face recognition software goes into overdrive if it can see a hint of a TV screen. Apparently Paul McCartney was in my house! I didn’t even offer him a cup of tea.

I’ve since bought a second Welcome to cover my office, and that installed and integrated really easily.

So the Netatmo Welcome is highly recommended.

The only slight negative is that Netatmo has still (2 Sep 2018) not delivered Apple HomeKit support, having originally promised it for early 2018, and then for summer 2018. They’ve had HomeKit support for a while in their exterior security camera (Netatmo Presence) so it is a mystery why it is delayed and delayed for the Netatmo Welcome. Other than that, the accompanying iOS app is very easy to use and I get alerted and can then see when workmen etc arrive when I’m away.

This is a really neat piece of tech! My husband has set it up in the kitchen to keep an eye on my cats and my children getting into things that they shouldn’t. The set up was super easy and you can view what the camera sees on your mobile phone. The camera itself is not bulky at all and so fits neatly on the worktop without getting in the way. I was hoping that this would be able to be used outside but it is not waterproof and so it can only be used inside.

Got this for our lounge as added security.

It’s a pretty little thing, is easy to set up, and has a good coverage.

Worth considering where you are going to put it before you buy it, though.
Windows have to be behind it, and it needs to be near a plug. Also needs to face a door, otherwise it’s avoidable.

Works well, great app, good facial recognition and smart alerts.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI’m really impressed with this light/camera. If you already have an outdoor light, installing this couldn’t be easier, as it’s a like-for-like replacement. Simply disconnect the old light and connect this one. It took me about 30 minutes to install.

Initial set-up was easy. It found my Wi-Fi and connected to that automatically, once I’d confirmed the network name. It then also identified I had an Apple Homekit set-up, gave me the code and took me through the steps to join Homekit. So within a few minutes, I could view the camera output through both the Netatmo app and Apple Home app.

The final steps are the tweaks to the motion sensor, alerts and light. I reduced the motion sensor area to exclude the road at the end of my front garden, so it only recorded motion in my front garden and driveway. I switched off the alerts completely in the Netatmo app and just used the motion alert in Homekit. Using Homekit allowed me to only be alerted when nobody was at home. I couldn’t see a way of doing that in the Netatmo app (I didn’t want to be alerted when me or my partner were at the front of the house). I also reduced the brightness of the light. At 100% it’s very bright and, being by the front door, would blind approaching callers. So I found around 30-40% was bright enough.

The video quality is okay. It’s not amazing. I used to have a Hikvision 720p camera and I found that sharper. That was wired though. Saying that, the quality is acceptable and you can see faces clearly. Night vision is, again, okay. Not brilliant, but acceptable. It records video to the supplied SD card. I also set it up to copy the recorded videos to my FTP server. You can also set it to upload them to Dropbox.

Overall, it’s a very good security solution that’s easy to install and has been well thought out.

I have bought a number of these. A couple have failed, mainly due to SD card problems I think, but undeterred I now have two at home and one in my holiday home in France. I believe myself to be ‘tech-savvie’ but some buyers will find the setup convoluted. Persevere because the benefits are worth it. No intruders, or even nosey passers by looking in through the windows of the French cottage. Be notified when the caretaker comes in while we are away. All video available from an app on your phone.
I too wish that there was a discreet version so I could check on what is going on in my study while I’m away. Not in a paranoid way! just curious!!
I also have the Netatmo Presence in France which I will review separately. It works in the same app but is setup in a different (weird) way.

Would have put 5 stars if it wouldn’t notify movement instead of the face from time to time. I’m aware of the limitations due to lighting but as a camera like this will obviously be facing a door the light can only come most of the time from the back of the person entering. Otherwise the product and app are perfec

This is a reasonable price for what you get. Unlike a lot of other similar cameras on the market, you don’t have to pay for storage
with the Netamtmo – you can either use an SD card for local storage or transfer to the cloud via DropBox or FTP. This is a useful feature and the rest of the market needs to follow this great example.

It’s very easy to set up and downloading the app on your phone let’s you access the images from anywhere, and it also learns faces so over a week or so it saw the regular people in the house and tagged them by name that they’ve been seen. It’s a useful example of computer learning that makes a difference. The app is good and updated frequently. It cane be a bit annoy at times by alerting you when it sees an animal – even though there is a setting to ignore them, it still alerts when you are out of the house.

The unit has a good field of view and it’s easy to put somewhere out of the way and leave it to do it’s thing. It does tend to get quite hot, especially as the outer case is metal but this doesn’t seem to affect usage.

It’s a well designed, well thought out camera that once you’ve paid the purchase price you don’t need a subscription to store the video which makes it good value for money for a quality product.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI’ve bought a number of Netatmo’s products and love the simplicity and capabilities of their products. These cameras are great, deliver very clear 1080p resolution during the day and the IR kicks in in low light to delivery a decent image. You can adjust the resolution through the app if 1080p is too much for your bandwidth to 720p.

Physical installation is slightly fiddly, the bracket is easy to install but when installing the electrics and balancing the lamp a second pair of hands is helpful. My suggestion is they should put film over the lamp shell to protect it from damage when being installed. Once installed its very easy to get it hooked up to your network and account.

The lamp is bright but not quite as powerful as a dedicated 50w LED (2000lm) or a 300w (3500lm) flood lamp that turn night to day, but bright enough to illuminate a good 10 x 10 m area with reasonable light (perhaps around 1000-1500lm)

Mobile application is really simple to use and alerts can be controlled to only notify you of certain events at certain hours. In terms of connectivity hooking it up to dropbox is painless, also from a network security perspective it VPN out thus you do not need to create holes in your firewalls to use the remote software like some of the cheaper DVR style boxes.

I was a bit disappointed that these unlike the Welcome cameras these don’t do face recognition but the object (animal, person, vehicle) recognition is fantastic and like the Welcome indoor range you can train the system when it sometimes gets it wrong. The object recognition is very reliable on the whole.

I like the idea of being able to see into my home whilst I’m out. It’s reassuring to know that all is well and that the pets are behaving. This device creates a very high resolution picture, which can be seen from your phone. It has the advantage over other similar devices that it can recognise faces, and alert you if there’s a stranger in the home. Its weakness as a security device is that, if it is stolen, it only keeps the last picture before being switched off. If this is a blank, it won’t help to identify the burglar. However, you can get far more sophisticated and expensive systems to record intruders.

In my view, for this price, this is a great little device. I understand that you can purchase satellite tags to put outside. This is a really useful feature as you can speak to delivery guys and direct them where to leave your parcels. That’s a great security feature.

This product was extremely easy to set up, opting for the lounge area of my shared house of four people. As a busy home, I was expecting a lot of false positives from he the facial recognition element. Indeed this was the case for the first couple of weeks but the training of the device to recognise faces of housemates and partners was very painless and in the end most alerts after 3 weeks were valid. The night vision element of the camera is excellent providing clear photos and the alerts are close to real time. I feel this would be an effective security measure at home.

The one issue we had with the camera actually stemmed from the high quality of the images and the wide angle of the camera. It was difficult to find a place where the camera couldn’t see movement in the street outside (and send alerts about it) or indeed catch faces on the television (at one point getting security alerts that the entire cast of the Big Bang Theory were in our living room). We also found that the camera kept rotating round (probably pulled by its power cord), which was resolved with a piece of sticky tape. It gets quite hot during operation, but we are told this is normal.

Overall I think this is a neat gadget, well implemented and I would recommend it.

I already have one of their Weather Stations Netatmo Weather Station for Smartphones, Compatible with Amazon Alexa which uses a different app but the same login and password details.

The camera is easy to setup and can use WiFi or direct ethernet cable (comes with a flat cable) and comes with its own USB style power supply unit (cable is very stiff which makes positioning the camera more tricky).

Also, unless you have an open plan house another problem is where to position it (so you need a position with a good field of view, no windows or TV’s in shot and a mains power point).

    I found this a problem.

Once setup, the app will start to learn the faces it identifies and you can then add the faces seen to already identified persons or create new ones.

The app will then alert you when they have been seen (after not being seen for a number of hours you have set) or an alarm for an unknown face (I can find no option to change the alarm noise which is very easy to miss, android app).

    Yes it works but…

    1. Runs very warm using 6 watts of power (most of which seems to go in waste heat).
    2. The night time viewing is helped by a red LED on the unit front which makes it an easy target for a bad guy.
    3. As the device becomes more popular, bad guys will know what to look for.

It has been working fine and has performed one firmware update since installed and the Android app also works well (but an option to change the alert sound and perhaps alarm repeat would be nice).

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHad this since November 2016
We put it on the fridge to look straight down the hall right towards the front door. An addition to a standard alarm and not a replacement.
It catches almost any face at the door but sometimes thinks the back of my shirt is a face when i’m in the kitchen- you can train it to be less silly in the app.
Recent addition is a pet sensing feature on android. So we now have a budgie listed under his name !

Night vision is really strong on this, and on balance I like it – but am not paying for Dropbox as I think we are fast becoming a nation of monthly over-subscribers,who forget how much we waste on these clever little money makers.
I’d be tempted by a UK service with all data kept in the UK though.
I got a bigger sd card for it and that was good enough to capture more time.

Nice build, gets warmer if using wifi – but impractical to use Lan cable where we need it to be.

I’d miss it if it we didn’t have it so i think it’s made the home more secure – triggers phone if a smoke alarm goes off too – where ever i am.
Does 1080p over wifi 9/10 times for us

Although I have read a number of reviews here complaining about the difficulty of setting this up I have to say that that has not been my experience. I downloaded the app, plugged the camera into the power socket. (Turned it upside down – not quite sure why but I just decided to follow the instructions). And within five minutes tops – I wasn’t timing it – I was up and running.

The picture quality is great. The facial recognition software works well. The camera makes a pretty good job of differentiating between motion, person and pet. Not perfect but pretty good.

It can be set up to operate when my phone is not on the premises. It will record to an SD card whatever it sees – movement triggered – when I am away from home. I was pleasantly surprised to find that an SD card was supplied too. There is also a facility to upload recordings to Dropbox. A good feature which puts this ahead of one of the opposition who want to charge a subscription for uploading to their server. As I already have a Dropbox account this is great for me.

I have a Netatmo weather station which is an elegant piece of equipment and this gold coloured camera is an almost identical form factor.

So it looks good and it works very effectively. Perhaps a touch on the expensive side compared to some indoor cameras but the elegant design of this does set it apart from the rest.

For the money I think this is an excellent product. I currently use Canary and Nest Security and this is much neater than the Canary product. Very easy to set up and the face recognition works well. Connected to my home network (Linksys router) very well and seems to maintain a steady connection. I know it’s personal taste but I think it looks pretty classy and I am happy to have it on a shelf in my house. Overall a nice quality camera that would be very high on my list of choices when looking at Wireless home security.

So first major downside is that you’re supposed to stand this on a shelf or sideboard, this is because the metal exterior is a heatsink that stays warm and cools the chips inside the unit. As I live in your average 3 bed semi there’s no ideal place to put this camera. It’s recommended distance to view the front door is too far in my opinion too. Camera states it doesn’t perform great with a bright backlight… Isn’t this always true in daylight when you open a door??? Never the less it is good one you tell the camera who is who.

Would prefer a longer cable to mount it where I need it. Seems to me that this is designed only for those with a large entrance hallway with space for a table to place it on.

Good that it can sense alarms and notify you if your carbon monoxide or smoke detector is going off and you’re not home! Will be looking at adding the tags into this soon, would like to see a little more refinement in the software to warrant the price tag but especially love the fact I can setup DO Buttons and use with the IFTTT services. For instance, if you’re seen it can flash your HUE lights a certain colour or automatically turn up the heating. Home integration at its finest and pleased with what it can do.

As a relative newcomer to security cameras, I have to say I found this device quite impressive and very easy to setup and use. The device itself is nice enough looking and of a fairly small size, but still offers excellent features and video/sound quality to boot.

What peaked my interest in this camera was the addition of face recognition, which means you are able to ignore family members if you want to. This was an important factor for me as the rest of the family were not too happy about being filmed all the time, so being able to set this to ignore them was a plus and I was able to show them how it works to reassure them that they are not being spied on. It appears to learn faces quickly and although it doesn’t seem to be perfect, it is generally an excellent feature that more or less works as advertised. The overall customization options in this area really are it’s number 1 strength in my opinion.

The app for the camera has worked flawlessly for me so far, with only a little video buffering when on a slower connection, but that is not the camera or apps fault. It is easy and intuitive to use and has worked fine both at home and away from home, so no problems there.

I have yet to set this up to save recording anywhere other than the SD card, but the ability to be able to use an FTP server or dropbox is an excellent option and gives a little peace of mind that any important images will hopefully be kept safe if the camera were to be spotted by an intruder. Speaking of being being spotted, I do think this device would have been better if it was disguised as something more mundane and unremarkable, such as a clock or a book. I do appreciate that the device is more aimed at families and not so much at security, but I still think a little stealth would have been a good idea and is the main reason for my reduction of 1 star in this review. I have my doubts as to whether the camera would be able to upload images quickly enough to an FTP server or dropbox if it were to be stolen/unplugged so this adds to the uncertainly of this camera for serious security uses.

Although I do understand the lack of battery in this camera due to the rate these types of devices deplete batteries, I do think it should at least have a battery backup in case of a power cut. So this is also a little bit of a let down.

Despite the slight negatives, overall I think this is a great camera at a reasonable sort of price and does seem to work as advertised…..recommended!

The Netatmo Welcome security camera joins a plethora of other home security on the market, with one key exception, it offers face recognition software. It will ‘read’ faces and then send this to a smartphone informing who has entered your home. It means its not just good for intrusion detection, but letting you know who is at home and when. It works great too. There’s also pet detection so you can keep an eye on your pets or see any unwelcome guests too.

The Netatmo sends alerts to your smartphone which can be completely customised. It means that you can set exactly what you want reported to you. So if you want to be told only if strangers are in the house, or if family members are home.

The design of the camera is good. Best of all it doesn’t look like a camera, and sits as an unobtrusive device on a table top. Its gold finish means it looks a bit smarter that your average black plastic device.

Setup and pairing of the device is really simple and quick. You then need to have any recognisable faces to allow the camera to read them at various angles and times of day. You then need to create profiles for everyone. This takes a bit of time depending on how large a family you have.

For unfamiliar faces the Netatmo will make a recording of the movement. Its saved on a 4gb micro SD card in the machine, and uploaded to the cloud incase anything happens to the camera. It can also record family movement if it selected in the settings. Video quality is good in daylight, at night its a little worse as the night-vision is okay, but could be better. Some quick movements don’t capture as well.

Overall though this is a really useful security device. The face recognition is a little time consuming to set up but ends up being a fantastic feature. Its easy to setup and customise, and the video quality is good. If you’re interested in affordable home security you should check this out.

Golden Review Award: 40 From Our UsersIf you have broadband through BT you may have trouble initially. These are the things I did to get it to work (my router is the BT Smart Hub). You may need to google some of the steps, but BT have decent step-by-step guides if you need them.

    1) Disable Smart setup on your hub (log in to your hub to do this).

    2) Run the Netatmo app to set up the camera – this can take 45 mins, don’t be put off if it seems nothing is happening (as long as the floodlight is blinking). It will end saying pairing was successful. Then it will say it can’t connect to your network or something.

    3) Set up a static IP address for the Presence. You do this on your hub (google it). During this process you will see a list of MAC addresses on your network. You will need to know which one belongs to the camera – I think it starts something like ee:70:ee and the last part is the camera’s serial number (found on the box).

    4) On your hub enable port forwarding for the camera (google BT’s guide this) for ports 4500 and 500 (choose UDP)

    5) Back on the app, enter the details.
Your hub (router) should show you what the static IP address for the camera is. (E.g. 192.168.1.xxx)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router IP address: 192.168.1.254 (for the Smart Hub. Previous versions of the home hub may be different – look on the back of the router or google it).
    Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
    Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4

    Pros
    – The timeline is great. You can tell it to either ignore or include each one of: people/animals/cars/other. So you don’t get hundreds of events every day, a massive plus.
    – You also can see thumbnails of the key part of the video without having to watch it through, which is brilliant. e.g. if it recorded a clip because it saw an animal it will show one or more cropped thumbnails of the animal.
    – Good idea to be wired to directly replace a porch light. Installation is easy if you’re doing this (and I’m not great at DIY)
    – Doubles up as porch light
    – You can control things like the brightness of the light, the parts of the view to monitor or ignore, what to alert you about, just record or completely ignore
    – Free cloud storage (via dropbox) or your own ftp solution
    – No ongoing costs

    Cons:
    – Set-up is a pain for BT customers
    – No weekend customer support
    – Poor documentation and help articles on the website (hence writing the guide above)
    – Expensive (but no ongoing costs, unlike some)
    – Unattractive
    – A few seconds lag in live view despite good signal and fast broadband (but I think this is true of all streaming cameras)

This is my third Netatmo purchase in about 5 months. I bought 2 Netatmo Presence (external security cameras / lights) and now this. The Presence cameras / lights (from now on I’ll just call them Presence & Welcome!) were installed separately one at a rear door then later one on a front door. Installation and setting up was a breeze and they both worked brilliantly. However then I installed Welcome….
All 3 use exactly the same connectivity (i.e. WiFi connection) to send captured images. They use the same Netatmo software package which distinguishes between devices…. However since I’ve upgraded to the third device (Welcome) the 2 Presence have now stopped recognising the difference between a human; animal and car – they can’t for some reason distinguish!! I’ve rebooted and (in-line with instructions) reconfigured them but no luck. Flapping crows on a bird feeder are now people!! A cat creeping by at 3am is a “Person Seen” which considering these are safeguarding an elderly relatives property is quite a worrying notification at 7am!
As is the case with all Netatmo products this Welcome is a pleasant; contemporary device which is beautifully presented and would look great anywhere. Its appearance is discreet yet functional. A camera lens at the top is not really noticeable yet gives a 130* cover. The face recognition technology is mind blowing and affords wonderful reassurance of who is in your home (or wherever else you install it). Set up is as easy as can be and even a technophobe could do it with no problem! You can set the parameters according to your needs and if you wish (and can justify it) you can also view and listen live-time.
Netatmo are without doubt quality products designed and manufactured by the French so expect the best. That is reflected of course in the price as these are at the upper end of domestic home security devices (albeit I prefer Domestic Home Safety Devices!) but you do actually get what you pay for.
My only gripe as I set at the outset is that the clever functions of the Presence seem to have been screwed by my new Welcome…..ah well, technology eh?

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersFirstly, let me state that I love this camera!!

I was looking for a security camera with very particular characteristics:
    a) Something discrete and not overtly obvious (didn’t want criminals to see a security camera and wonder what its protecting)
    b) Internet ready – I want to be able to see what’s going on, especially when I’m off-site, but I don’t want to pay through the nose for it either
    c) Notifications of any activity
    d) Long life – I can’t be dealing with battery swaps, etc, all the time

I tried a couple of other camera systems (one of which was over 3x the price), but they were really poor, disconnecting at inopportune times and generally useless for the sake of security. Reluctantly, I tried this, not expecting much. Wow, was I wrong!!

The camera is hard-wired to your power-supply, there’s no battery, so it’s always on. It’s quite generous in its range of movement so you can position and angle as you wish, and even mount it upside down (the s/w allows you to flip the image). It connects to the internet via wifi – signal is not the strongest, but that can be rectified with a booster nearby.

Once you’ve got it configured and set up, you’re done! It will now detect and monitor for people, cars, animals and other movement with a high degree of accuracy. You can set recording/alert levels for each (you might not want to record cats entering your yard, etc), and you’re given a really nice history of ‘events’ (categorised by type, i.e. people, vehicle, etc) that you can view on your mobile device at your leisure.

The records start a few seconds before the event itself (which suggests to me the camera is always recording, but just saves the recording when an event occurs), and is captured in very high resolution – crystal clear images. And as it doubles as a security light, even recordings at night are quite clear. You’ll also get a series of thumbnails with each event so you can see exactly what happened at a glance instead of remotely viewing the video itself.

There are no further fees, no online storage, etc, required. You pay for the camera, that’s it.

The software is a little clunky, but overall I’m just so impressed with the camera it’s something I’m willing to overlook. And besides, once you’ve set it up, you don’t need to manage it again.

The only real complaint I have is that you have to manage alerts on the camera itself, as opposed to the app on your device. I currently have the camera set to alert whenever a car or person is seen – my wife doesn’t care about the cars and wants to see the animals, but can’t switch the settings otherwise I don’t get the alerts I’m interested in. It would be really awesome if the app was able to filter out the alerts so that individual users can determine what they want to see.

A fun side-effect of having installed it now is seeing how many cats actually enter our yard, and their nocturnal activities whilst we’re asleep

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersWe have been looking for a solution for a considerable amount of time, The new Arlo Pro by Netgear was first choice but with the UK release date not known at the time I was not sure how much longer I can wait. The Netgear as others are moving towards a wireless solution with batteries requiring frequent charging depending on usage, the idea is good but the thought of charging or replace the batteries was starting to put me off.

I was also free conscious of the perception of my neighbours if we installed ‘CCTV’ type camera’s as this can cause problems! So the search began and after months of searching the internet, I stumbled on Netatmo Presence and then the research started.

Like so many reviews on amazon and other websites, you are presented with both good and bad. Considering this is a 249 front door light with a camera the level of risk is amplified in purchasing a product that is as bad as some have made it out to be in these reviews.

My concern was the height of installation, which is just over 1.8 mt and under a ‘porch’ if you could call it that. Having read the reviews and notice that Netatmo recommend 2 – 2.5 mt for best results this weighed heavy on the ‘Click To Buy’ button on amazon.

We purchased the item yesterday the 10th of Feb as the price had dropped to 229 and was delivered by 11:00 am on the 11/02/2017.

    1. Physical installation was very easy, as this involved taking our old light off and putting the new light on.
    2. Setting the camera up could not be easier! download the app and follow the instructions and 5 minutes later it was configured.
    3. Linking to our dropbox account was very simple and was completed in 1-2 minutes.

So why have I given this a 5* rating then?

    1. Simple to install
    2. Simple to configure with app
    3. 1080p video recording is very good and more than acceptable.
    4. Permanent electrical supply, meaning I don’t have to change batteries or recharge every 3-12 months like others.
    5. Accurate notifications and by category when activated.
    6. The unit was smaller than we expected as the pictures are misleading but to be honest it looks perfect and stylish in a strange ‘box’ type of way.

Some people buy this device then complain at the price or the fact it can’t do 2-way audio, it would be wrong to mark down this product based on those facts. If you are honest then surely you can only review this product based on the key assumptions made at the time of purchase, so I knew it was costly and I knew it could not do 2-way audio! so move on.

Would I like it to be cheaper? yes, if does did not compromised on quality but the quality of the product is excellent.

Overall, the product has exceeded our expectations and we are both extremely pleased. It has given us peace of mind since we where last broken into in or previous house 2 years ago.

A solid Camera And Front Door Light Worthy Of Consideration.

Technical support eventually got back to me and updated firmware on device that has definitely helped, although I still have to turn off car detection as unit still picks them up outside of the alert zones at night.
Using the improve detection feature, the unit is now much more reliable and quality of video along with the iPhone app is excellent.
Still a little bit to go but I would now recommend this unit, very easy to use and intuitive.

This unit has not worked properly since I installed it a couple of weeks ago. Despite have set up alert zones, when it is dark the unit picks up movement that is outwith the zones, I have had the dull down all of the features until this fault is resolved. During daylight hours everything works great and I get no false alerts. Other problem I have with the unit is night vision, I have the Presence mounted on my house pointing down my driveway, despite our cars being parked directly under the unit, when it is dark it is not possible to see full length of the cars.
I raised a ticket with Netatmo support and 10 days later they have not got back to me which I am really disappointed about. Will see what they say if they ever get back to me and may change my review at that time.
At the moment I would not recommend the Presence to anyone, there are better units out there at half the price.

Netatmo Presence is as brilliant as Netatmo Welcome. No monthly fee at all.

Set up is doodle, just followed the printed instructions and it was up and running in under 5 minutes. It took me under 30 mins to hang the camera and connect to the power as I had to run a meter of flex cable from the outer wall light.

After the set up, notifications start pouring in with appx 5 second delay which I think is normal as my WiFi router is about 15 feets from the installed camera. I have observed that it starts recording even before sending the notification means you may get notification a few seconds later but you won’t miss the event. Live stream has delay of appx 7 to 10 seconds but I think it’s with every IP camera.

I managed to hang the Presence at appx 2 meters height at the front door to cover my 50 feet wide driveway. Quality was superb for the area it was covering but had to remove as it didn’t cover the whole driveway plus chances of grab & run was higher as camera is just above our main door which is only 12 feet from the pedestrian pavement. Yeah I know it will record before a thug places his/her hands on it but why risk 249.

Tested at appx 14 feets height (not fixed yet), the quality drops as human face is bit pixelated in a broad sunny day. Hence 4 stars as I expect it to be a crystal crisp quality. I wasn’t able to check the quality during the night so can’t comment.

You can set up security zones to target a specific area which is an amazing feature & it only send notifications if someone steps in the set security zone. No unwanted notifications.

Flood light is a good feature and you can set the intensity of the light (brighter or mild) from the mobile App but didn’t find any information if the LEDs are replaceable or not, in case they stopped working.

I can’t find where is the micro SD card in Presence as oppose to Welcome but you can set up your own FTP (it’s easy just Google set up FTP and follow Microsoft version or there are tons videos on the YouTube). Or turn any old unused laptop as your FTP server. Plus you can link it with your Dropbox. I haven’t tried yet but I will test it with my Yahoo or Gmail drives as they are lot more generous than Dropbox.

My biggest concern – I have to run a flex cable to power from the nearest socket; the connection behind the Netatmo Presence box is not ip67 rated and can easily get condensation so going to buy an ip65 rated junction box and mount the camera on it as Netatmo has shown in their installation video on their website and YouTube.

Brilliant product if you are not into POE/NVR stuff and want to avoid cables and drill big holes through the wall, I would recommend this.

Feedback for Netatmo: they could have make it smaller like their own indoor Welcome or may be double the size of Nest outdoor camera (you pay monthly fee to record your videos on Nest) with anti-vandal feature for overhead door installation with two way communication.

Netatmo can easily make it a more better quality product with higher resolutions as in REOLINK 8-Channels 4-Megapixel (2560×1440) Super HD PoE NVR Home Security Monitoring System (RLK8-410B4) or Reolink RLC-410WS or Hikvision HD bullet or dome cameras. I’m thinking to buy reolink or better get to try for free under Amazon Vine as I don’t know the level of customer support from reolink.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought one and was blown away by the functionality and quality of the device. Sadly, adding the second one to watch the back of the house has soured the positive experience somewhat. The notifications via the app and Apple Watch work very well. The devices still record but the quality of each video stream has now degraded. I’ve yet to figure out why this is but one theory I have is that domestic routers, of the type supplied by Sky etc., are not up to the WiFi bandwidth requirements. Clearly were that the case, then that is not the fault of Netatmo but it may strike a cautionary note to those with the requirement for more than one device. I need to add a third but am holding fire for the moment. I will update this review once I have heard from Netatmo but I’d urge caution before making this significant investment. First update: There is no identifiable technical support that I have been able to find. Given the premium price of these devices, buying them without access to technical support makes no sense. They lose one star for that. UPDATE: After a few months of use, I can now add more experience. Mostly superb but there are some odd phenomenon. Because they don’t detect with a heat signature (like a PIR), it’s surprising what the camera mistakes. Large plants moving in high winds are mistaken for people. Even more weird is that, if you exclude the plant from the detection zone, the shadow of it on the ground moving in wind/bright sunlight, also becomes a ‘person’. Last night, a spider on the camera became a ‘car in the garden’. I’ve still yet to see a more impressive device but not quite perfection just yet.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersUpdate 21/01/2017
Well thanks to Netatmo support for sorting out my issue. In particular Florian who is very professional and a huge help. I now know what it is like to have a perfectly functioning device that stays connected and is working brilliantly. No disconnections, all correct notifications and generally just awesome. My home feels much more secure. Thanks for standing by your products Netatmo. folks grab one, when they work they are superb. Back to 5 stars.

    Update 10/1/17

Unfortunately this is now a one star product. Constantly disconnects losing the live stream. This means I lose notifications. It is only fixed by a restart. Unfortunately today I missed the neighbours mailbox being vandalised as the camera went down immediately after a restart and as I was not home to do it again it stayed disconnected all day. My welcome is wonderful but this camera is just an expensive wall ornament. Really unhappy. Netatmo just don’t answer and when they do it is a week later and of no help at all. Too many faults like this in the forums for it to be anything but a bad fault or bug.

    Original review

I ordered this from Amazon (wife account) and had it shipped to New Zealand via my in laws. It is available in Australia but not NZ yet. It arrived perfectly packaged and really quickly. I had been waiting a year for this camera and could not get my hands on it fast enough. I had an electrician in to run a 240 volt wire to the position on the wall I wanted it mounted. All my existing fittings hang from the eves and this must be mounted on a vertical wall. I watched the install video provided by Netatmo on you tube. I strongly suggest doing that as it is very clear and well made. The instructions in the box are pretty ordinary. I hardly referred to those.

Anyway mounting it was pretty straight forward. Took about an hour. The only issue is I have a brick house and the bricks have a wave surface so getting it to mount of a reasonably flat bit took a little longer. The wiring can be a touch hard to get in behind the base as you twist it into place but all in all it’s a clever way to mount with very little difficulty.

I then powered it on (took a few moments to power up which had me with my heart in my mouth briefly as I expected an immediate start). From there I just ensured I was connected to the network AP I wanted the camera to connect to and followed the app. I later set up dropbox and FTP to mirror the settings in my Netatmo Welcome camera. Incredibly easy and it was filming me in seconds. The next step was to set up the alert zones using the four available. Pretty easy and efficient however they can only be rectangular or square (regular shapes) and don’t go down as small as I’d like to focus on say just the mailbox in one zone. Not really a big deal though. I have found that I had to keep windows that were inside alert zones and reflected car lights at night out of the zone or it would register a car. My zones extend down the driveway to just short of the footpath. I have to say that it performs flawlessly in terms of identifying cars, humans and animals. our two cats are being picked up everytime without fail. It has been interesting to see where they sneak off to at night. The floodlight comes on for cars and humans but I leave it off with animals. The picture is arguably better with it off at night but I like it to make anyone walking on the property think twice as they get flooded in light, hence it is on for anything not an animal.

The footage on the live feed is crisp and clear but sometimes as it starts to buffer or begin playing it can get very pixelated. The FTP transfers and those on the SD card and dropbox are super super clear though. Amazing quality. Its an outstanding device and I would buy one again. I find myself sitting watching the live feed far too often. There is one MAJOY issue though that has to be worked out and soon. It is even answered in the help section of the Netatmo website which seems odd. Just fix it Netatmo.

That issue is that twice a day, without fail, normally as we go from dawn to daylight or daylight to dusk the live feed gets stuck. It either just goes black or freezes on the last image updated. Huge issue! I can’t change settings or flick the floodlight on or anything in an attempt get it back online. The only I can do is view the captured videos in the timeline. Obviously if it does this while I am away at work or on holiday and I am not at home to switch it off at its power source and then back on again it is a complete waste of space. I have a work around to fix while I am away in that today I installed a Wemo light switch that I can turn on and off remotely. That allows me to reboot the Presence when at work etc.

When in this state it doesn’t even register movement, of anything!. Basically when I get up in the morning and before dusk I have to “fix it” and power it off then back on. The onetime in the four days it has been going that it didn’t fail going into night (first day) the IR LED’s failed to come on. Hmmmm.

I have complete faith that Netatmo will fix this so therefore still love the Presence and would recommend it to anyone. I have the Welcome and it’s been superb and I will get a Home Coach as soon as I can. But be aware, the camera does have this quite bad issue…..for now.

I will update the review once Netatmo fix this issue. Just FYI, I have high speed broadband, really strong wifi (there presence runs off an extender that is full strength signal in and out which I installed just to make sure the Camera had the best signal). I know NZ is a long way away from any servers Netatmo run but the Welcome runs perfectly and is sold here, as is the Presence is Aussie. Basically it isa camera issue, not my setup. Netatmo Forums document it as well. Still love it though 🙂

    Thanks Lance M

Amazing piece of kit, much more than just a camera, reacts to sound such as alarm going off and alerts you, which was a bonus for me as my alarm is no longer monitored. More than anything, gives enormous peace of mind that everything is OK at home while you are away.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersSpent a long while looking around at security cameras and weighing up the various pros and cons. I decided that this was reasonably priced and offered all the features I wanted:
-smart alerts based on facial recognition: so you know when you get an alert it’s for a good reason, rather than every time it detects motion! (You can set it to ‘ignore’ people it recognises too, so it won’t video them.)
-no ongoing storage costs (it integrates nicely with DropBox, which is free and works well)
-nice design – it doesn’t look like a camera, and therefore fits well; it’s features are well thought through
-very easy to set up and the App and website are intuitive and simple to use

The camera arrived in nice packaging, and I had it set up and working in 5-10 minutes. Facial recognition began to learn faces, and this works well quickly even at long distances of 5-7 meters. I think Netatmo have improved this feature via updates (given some of the reviews from a while ago which say there were issues) – I have not experienced any problems, and although it is still ‘learning’ the accuracy is very good. I’m not getting ‘spammed’ every minute when it detects motion – only useful alerts are sent, and you can easily adjust the alerting options.

All in all, I’m very pleased I chose this camera. I hope this review is helpful.

Golden Review Award: 215 From Our UsersI’m pretty impressed by this camera. I installed it almost a month ago and I wanted to see how it performs before writing the review. It has some plusses (big ones) and some minuses, of course.

The first little problem came up during installation. The black box that functions as a base for the camera, although hallow in the back, does not have much free space in it. I installed the camera flash on a wooden pole. And I had to press the wires inside and then the base against the pole. Those wires are a tight fit behind the base if there’s no additional hole in the wall.

Then WiFi setup. After the initial installation, the camera would drop its connection a couple of times in a day. After the first 2-3 days or so, the connection seemed to stabilise. I would have expected this camera to get a better signal, being this big. But its wifi reception is weaker than my iPhone 6. The phone showed 2 bars right near the camera, while the camera showed just one (the dot). Drops in wifi connection does not affect recordings as those are stored on its internal SD card. It’s just annoying if you want to access your camera in that moment.

Storage. This comes with an SD card which is preinstalled. I don’t know if it’s 8 or 16GB and there is no mention of internal storage in the app. From what I saw in the app, the camera saves bits of videos on the card and then from the card they are uploaded to the cloud (and your additional storage, if you have one). If you setup FTP or Dropbox, the videos will be uploaded twice, so if you watch your bandwidth. I set up an FTP storage inside my home, on a Synology NAS.

Light. The light is very bright. I had a 100w lamp that had a similar brightness. But because on Netatmo the light can be used dimmed, I dimmed it at about 80%. Another nice feature to have. Plus these are leds, so should last quite a few good years, and you can’t beet that wattage. If with full brightness it has 12w, probably I have it now on 10w and it lights the whole front of my house at night.

Camera. The camera saves videos in 4 formats: 1080p, 720p, medium and low. I save them 1080p and a day takes around 3GB.

Detection. We’ll here Netatmo shines. It’s so good that you start to get annoying when it gets something wrong. I will post some pictures to see how it detects animals, people, cars. It can spot cars through my fence, it can spot them at night based only on the headlights, it spots my neighbours cars in his yard, when he starts to pull it out. It’s a marvel. It spots people from back, side, front. And again, it spots my neighbour from across the street when he gets out of the house 🙂

Two problems I had with detection:
    1. The exhaust from my boiler is on the front on the house. It blows off burnt gases from the boiler. During daytime there’s no problem with this. On some foggy days I got some “Motion detection” alarms. But at night it’s a nightmare. I get tons of person detected from that smoke. You can see how the smoke looks in one of the night pictures of this review.
    2. I tried setting the light to come on only for person detection at night. And although it says it detected a car, the light comes on as usual.

Overall I’m very impressed with the camera build quality and the work put in the software. I activated the netatmo learning option, maybe they get this fake detections and make the system better in a few months.

UPDATE. After a couple of snow storms I found the design to have a small flaw. Due to the small edge the camera tends to keep the snow, which builds up until there’s no image. I uploaded an image for this too. They should have made the camera casing flush with the housing to allow liquids to drain properly. Whenever it snowed, the black square where the camera is got filled up with snow which then froze. And it is difficult to clean it. You have to melt it somehow.

    The best exterior camera

Cameras work well and phone app gives good reassurance.
Motion detected was the cat on one occasion but the live video reassured.
    Works well with dropbox.
Can recommend the cameras but not the tags.
Tags are badly designed. Difficult to insert batteries without cap coming off and cap comes off spontaneously if door is shut with too much force.
The one close to the WiFi has stopped working.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersExcellent camera. New update allows you to upload straight to Dropbox. Very clear night vision and day vision. Easy and quick to setup. Facial recognition is very good and allows you to be notified and recorded when needed. Ifttt also allows for cool features like a screenshot of unknown person straight to your email which at one point was almost instant.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI’ve had mine now for approximately 6 weeks, and it’s great. One of the selling points for me was not having to buy into an expensive subscription model to store my video. the second is being alerted to when my child gets in from school.

The customisation is very good; mine is set to record the children when they arrive and unknown faces/motion/alerts. I’ve found it picks up unknown faces very well (we still get a few of us register but it’s decreasing by the week) – mine is pointed at the front door and will pick up the grocery delivery person and they don’t cross the threshold.

I can set the welcome to note we have all left the house from the apple watch app, and that’s received some performance improvements in the past few weeks to make it usable – it was appalling before this… I’m hoping to get Hue soon to use IFTTT to trigger the lights being turned off (children being what they are and not doing that…).

After the initial hilarity of pulling faces at it, etc, the gold tube on the cupboard has now blended into obscurity and is largely unnoticed by us all, which is exactly what I was after. It takes up very little space and does the job I need. NB Mine is wired into the router, so I can’t comment on the wifi performance that some have had issues with.

My cloud storage set up is a little convoluted, but it works well. I have an FTP site on my local home Synology NAS. Video is recorded here, and using Cloud Sync this is pushed up to Amazon Drive. A Hazel rule on my Mac watches the NAS folder and deletes it every two weeks to ensure it doesn’t fill up. Admittedly not for everyone, but I’d researched this before buying it and pleased to say everything works great.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersIt took awhile for the face recognition to really work but it is worth the effort to ‘train’ it. I have tried a few different home security camera and this is the best I have used. Once you get it trained to recognise faces the number of alerts are kept to a minimum. Setting up on the home network took almost no effort. The iPhone app is well designed and easy to use. The unit is also smaller than it looks.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersI’ve been waiting for a manufacturer to offer a security camera without an over-priced subscription model and troubling data lock-ins. The Netatmo Welcome is great. I’ve had it for 2 weeks now and it performs incredibly well, was simple to set up, and has an excellent app.
(First product I’ve ever bothered to review – but well deserving of recommendation.)
