Classic 120mm tower size for excellent overall compatibilityStanding 158mm tall, the NH-U12A is short enough to fit most modern mid- or high-end tower cases. Measuring 125mm wide (including fan and fan clips), the cooler stays clear of the top PCIe slot on most standard ATX or Micro-ATX motherboards, ensuring optimum compatibility with multi-GPU setups. | 100% RAM compatibility on LGA115x and AM4Due to its asymmetric design, the NH-U12A does not overhang the RAM slots on Intel LGA115x and AMD AM4 based motherboards, which ensures easy access to the modules and 100% compatibility with tall heat-spreaders. On LGA2066, the rear fan will overhang the RAM slots on the left-hand side of the socket, so RAM modules should not exceed 42mm in height. * | Dual NF-A12 120mm fansThe NF-A12x25 is a highly optimised next-generation 120mm fan that integrates Noctuaâs latest innovations in aerodynamic engineering in order to achieve an unprecedented level of quiet cooling performance. Using this elite-class fan in a push/pull dual fan configuration is one of the cornerstones of the NH-U12Aâs commanding performance and acoustic efficiency. | NT-H1 thermal compoundNoctuaâs much-acclaimed NT-H1 is a pro-grade TIM solution that provides minimum thermal resistance, excellent ease of use and outstanding reliability. Chosen again and again by overclockers and enthusiast users worldwide, it has established itself as a benchmark for premium-quality thermal compounds. |

I’ve been using this cooler for the past 7 months on a 10th generation intel processor (i7 10700k). I’ve been thoroughly impressed with this cooler, as temperatures average around the 68 degrees celcius to 72 degrees celcius range during extended use. The heatsink design allows for 100% unobstructed view of the RAM slots in most modern motherboards.
Its nice not having to worry about pump failure and leaking blocks (common points of failure for the ever popular AIO units). The only downside of course is the lack of availability of Chromax heat sink covers until Q4 of this year for added aesthetics; cant wait to pick one up!
Whisper quiet and keeps my cpu running at a constant 40degrees even when gaming, brilliant and well impressed.
This is way better than water cooling. We bought it for a Ryzen processor and it keeps it nice and cool. There’s actually very good reviews at YouTube that will show you why this is the best cooler in the market.
This is an extremely efficient, relatively compact air cooler. Went with this because my current PC case doesn’t support an AIO water cooler. Using it with an i7-10700k, and it performs excellently. Keeps my temperatures low without much noise.
Compared to other air coolers of similar performance, it is much smaller in size—though much larger than any stock cooler you may get with a CPU. Was fairly easy to install too! I will note though, that for my motherboard it actually used the older style intel mounting brackets rather than the new ones the manual indicates. Pretty easy to figure out though; one style matches the mounting holes while the others don’t.
Have yet to mess with overclocking with this, however, many tech/PC YouTubers have shown it to have good cooling performance similar to an AIO water cooler during overclocks. In some cases, better.
A me manca poco sfrega sul vetro laterale lel
Easy to install with clear instructions.
Super quiet even at high speeds and does an excellent job at cooling.
For the size I was blown away by how well this cooler works. This keeps my 5900x cool under load and makes barely any sound at all. I am very happy that I chose this over an AIO which I have had issues with in the past.
Installation was very easy and I was happy with all the included components.
Make sure you install it the correct way though. If you look at it the base is slightly offset to one side. The offset needs to be away from the memory so you have room if you are populating all 4 slots. For me the top of the owl’s head is pointing to the front of my case towards the memory.
This is an exceptional cooler, it replaced an AIO water cooler and does a MUCH better job and is quieter. I actually took one of the fans off (because the heat sink is beautiful so I wanted to be able to see it through my glass case) and it still performs just as well. My i7-9700K can run a heavy AVX workload on all 8 cores at 4.5 GHz and the only time the temp goes over 70 is if the room is very hot or for the second that it takes for the fan to start up (after which it goes to 60-65 and stays there).
I purchased this high performance quiet fan for my gaming computer since the water cooling system failed. After a lot of research I decided I wanted a fan vs the water system and I am VERY HAPPY with this purchase. The fan was easy to install (just make sure you install the screws in opposite rotation to ensure it stays even as you screw them on). It is a high quality fan and it is definitely quiet! I tested my computers temperature and it went down really fast and has consistently stayed very low. I would definitely recommend this fan! If there was any suggestion, it would be to provide different colors. I have one of those glass cases so it stands out BUT I rather have a working fan!
I am running an AMD Ryzen 5800X and had the massive Noctua NH-D15S for a while and while it is an exceptional cooler it’s absolutely massive (I was only able to have one fan installed on it otherwise it would have blocked the GPU fan below (see picture).
I was on the verge of ordering an AIO water cooler but by accident I stumbled upon the NH-U12A, initially thinking that it’s yet another standard single tower cooler and would be a noticeable step down in performance due to its smaller size.
Noctua claims on the box that this cooler offers 140mm performance in a smaller 120mm package and naturally I was sceptical of this sort of claim, but it turns out it’s completely true!
You can tell Noctua has thrown all their engineering and technology behind this to enable it to perform like it’s bigger brother and they’ve achieved this by adding an additional heatpipe (7 compared to the 6 found on the NH-D15) as well as including two of their brand new NF-A12x25 fans in a push-pull configuration.
The supplied NF-A12x25 PWM fans are a game changer compared to anything I’ve tried before – the blades use a new material that allows them to extend the blades so there is practically no gap between them and the housing which increases the static pressure to help force air through heatsinks (and radiators). A new bearing/hub allows it to wind up all the way to 2000RPM at a noise level that you have to actually experience yourself to believe. You could easily have these running 1500-1800RPM and be as quiet or quieter than other fans running just 1000-1200. I believe this fan would outperform even 140mm fans for airflow and static pressure.
As with all Noctua coolers, the supplied mounting kit for AMD and Intel processors is really easy to install and provides a secure mount. One particular highlight is the screws that screw the heatsink down to the mounting platform have a spring and a ‘hard stop’ to ensure you get the perfect mounting pressure with no risk of overtightening (once the screw stops turning it’s done). It’s also supplied with Noctua’s excellent NT-H1 thermal paste and a handy screwdriver.
I ran the Cinebench R23 multicore benchmark with my existing NH-D15S and got a maximum temperature of 81-82C (room temperature 24C) and then installed the NF-U12A and ran the same benchmark and got the SAME temperatures and same benchmark score.
So if you think the NH-D15 is too big or just won’t fit in your case, don’t hesitate to consider this instead, you really don’t have to compromise!
PROS:
1. Same performance as the massive NH-D15S
2. Compact footprint and is horizontally offset to stay clear of the memory
3. Typical Noctua quality
4. Simple to install AMD/Intel mounting kits provided (including Screwdriver!). Very secure fitting
5. 7 Heatpipes
6. Supplied with the incredible new NF-A12x25 fans
7. Excellent airflow through the heatsink due to the fans
8. Supplied with a tube of the excellent NT-H1 thermal paste
9. Supplied with 2 different speed adapters (if you can’t use PWM)
CONS:
1. More expensive than the NH-D15 (although consider the fans cost 25+ individually!), although in my opinion you get what you pay for.
Bought that in replacement of the stock cooler that comes with the R5 5600X – went from idle 40-50 degrees/gaming 60-80 degrees to idle 25-30 degrees/gaming 50-60 degrees
Easy enough to install – good quality built, seems very robust – it is quite a beast
Come with free thermal past and clear instructions
I run it quite high, so it is not super quiet when running under loads, but noise is not my concern – It can be quiet, should you be ready to sacrifice some speed > coolness which is not my case
Would definitely recommend
It’s Noctua. They have established the bar for computer fans and this does not deviate from their quality standard. But if you’re comparing this with other cooler from Noctua or other quality brands and are hung up on the one fan or two fan thing, let’s think about that for one minute.
Imagine you have a long stretch of conduit (pipe) that you need to get air through. So you put a fan on the exist side which pulls air through the conduit and blows out the end where the fan is. How much will it improve airflow to add a second fan on the far end? Assuming that the second fan is identical and spinning at the same rate, it will make hardly any difference at all. And the benchmark tests verify this. Running this cooler with 2 fans instead of 1 gives about a 6% increase in cooling performance.
The upshot here is that there’s nothing special about the fans (in the sense that they are exactly the same as if you bought them individually) and they’re simple to pop off. So if you need a CPU cooler and a really nice case fan, this is a cost-effective way to have that. In fact, the instructions even suggest doing that!
I did a lot of research before getting this; my trusty Corsair liquid-cooling system finally dies after 8 years of faithful service, so I needed a CPO cooler ASAP. After watching several YouTube reviews, I decided on the premium 120mm Noctua – and it DELIVERS! I had no idea of how noisy (by comparison) the Corsair was…installation took about 15 minutes (with me taking my time, after removal of the failed Corsair unit) and works like a charm. Virtually silent even in ‘Turbo’ mode and CPU rarely gets above 37 deg. C. All this AND a 6-year Warranty as well! FANTASTIC!
I’ve got an older case and was worried that this might not fit, but it did. A very snug, barely-making-it fit, but a fit nonetheless.
Seems to be working perfectly fine on my new i7 10700k. I’ve got overclock settings going, including the “turbo boost” thing, and even at 4.7GHz, this fan keeps the CPU nice and chilly. Idles around 30C, and never really goes above 70C under full load.
It’s also decently quiet. Even at around 1200rpm, it’s still barely above a whisper, and under full load, it’s not unbearably noisy. Even just some light music or gaming audio/sounds were more than enough to drown it out.
Good stuff. Well worth the $99 pricetag.
This cooler was extremely easy to install, and it does a fantastic job cooling my i9-9900K. I used to only use AIOs thinking they were infallible until I heard, or rather didn’t hear, my friend’s Noctua cooler so I made the switch. While cooling performance isn’t as good as some larger AIOs, I was willing to accept the slight performance decrease for noise especially since my PC is on my desk. That being said, I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone looking to extensively overclock higher TDP CPUs.
I would definitely recommend this cooler for it’s performance, quiet operation and size compatibility compared to the NH-D15 or Dark Rock Pro 4.
I got an i7 10700k stock.
Ambient temp 28, full load max 75 ( exporting media in premiere and Intel stress burn)
Buy this if you dont want to deal with and AIO system.
This is the best air cooler you can get.
This is the biggest pain in the ass to install. if you don’t put a ton of pressure on the screw when you screw it in you will round off the end of the screw. I had this exact problem. had to get an electric screwdriver and very carefully I had to screw it in while putting my body weight on the screw. I am shocked I didn’t break the motherboard. But, The thermal performance is amazing. I have a Ryzen 7 3800x and at full load, I get sub 50C (no OC). It is also so quiet.
Overall, if you are patient and confident at building PC’s this is a great cooler. It is quiet, cool, and to my eyes, it looks excellent.
I finally just wanted to retire my old NH-D14, although even though it was 7 years old, Noctua said it wasn’t worth upgrading unless it died… But I wanted to see how well this new one performed.
It does NOT disappoint!
These new fans push a TON of air, it’s much, much more compact, and noise levels are about the same. Ram clearance, while not an issue for me (Kingston HyperX ddr4-3600 no RGB), is designed to fit pretty much whatever massive type you want to throw in there too.
Comes with the H1 compound which I find a little strange as they have the upgraded H2 compound now, and I think they should ship the best with the best. But I guess they got another $10 out of me LOL.
My Ryzen 5800x never goes over 70 degrees with this beauty on it.
Yes, you can spend a LOT less on an air cooler. But Noctua makes the best, and have the best warranty, which you won’t ever need, as their products will long outlast them.
This thing is great. If youre at all familiar with performance air coolers, this one will pleasantly surprise you on how efficient is it to install. Attach the backplate behind the mobo, and fasten it with front thumb screws. Take the fans off the cooler (extremely user friendly fan attachment btw), plop on your thermal paste, and put the heat sink on. tighten the two spring loaded screws even as you clamp down till its seating firmly. Reattach the fans. Oh your memory is tall and close to the CPU socket? No problem, just attach that fan a little higher to clear your ram sticks. wolah, done.
Amazingly these fans, while 120mm and two of the, are really quiet. Im very impressed. I havent measured my temps, but this thing is such a beast, I know its going to perform great.
Installed this on a i9-10900k, ASUS Strix Z490-E mobo, using 4 sticks of G-Skill rident Royale DDR4. Went smooth as a whiistle.
Now if only the fans werent brown…
Whatever, Im giving this one 5 stars hands down. If performance cooling with ease if installation is for you, then buy one, you wont regret it.
I probably didn’t need an aftermarket cooler, but I was hoping to get my hands on a higher end processor. Nonetheless, this works very well – My AMD Ryzen 5600x won’t go above 65C at full load, in fact usually it stays in the 50s. I have not overclocked my processor, since the boost clock tends to be better for gaming than an all core overclock.
However, I did encounter one problem – the fans would not start when I used the included Y-splitter. I did try a different fan header, same problem. But when I individually hooked up each fan to its own header instead of using the splitter, they started working great.
Some day I’d like to get a 5950x – with how well it handles the 5600x, I have high hopes for this cooler.
He decirlo porque si no reviento. Pedazo disipador, capaz de amansar cualquier procesador de 8 ncleos.
Servizio Amazon preciso e puntuale come sempre.
This is best cooler ever you can get of this size. I can’t hear it, it could be black instead of this vomit color but still, how often do you stare at the cpu cooler.
TIP: I bought used sold from Austria (manufacturer returns) I have got brand new shiny item without any defects or problems, warranty as usual an for 15% less. Buy that, don’t buy full price
Great step up from Noctua with a 120mm single-tower cooler.
The extra heatpipes and added thickness to it’s predecessors makes it able to handle the latest processors with ease. I ended up installing it on a slightly older Ryzen 7 2700X and it kept the load temperatures around 60C during a Prime95 small-FFT run.
I did have some issues with RAM clearance – I unfortunately wasn’t able to utilise both fans on the cooler. I mainly blame this on modern DIMMs which are excessively high. As a result, I re-purposed the second fan as a case exhaust fan, so it’s thankfully not wasted. That being important given my only other gripe – the rather steep price tag for this cooler.
All in all – it’s the performance that makes this a winner.
This air cooler has far exceeded my expectations, I have a i9-9900k and I ran a stress test using AIDA64. my lowest idle was about 33 and highest was 75 at full load, (temps in Celsius). This air cooler is worth what I paid for. Also, I don’t have much case fans yet, (still looking for ARGB fans). I highly recommend this Noctua Air Cooler. Since I live in southern California, expect hot ambient temperatures. There is clearance for my ram memory. (In picture attached, the ram closest to the air cooler is the first ram slot, don’t mind the wires, I’m still cleaning it.)
My system is as follows
i9-9900k
Asus Rog Strix Z390-E Gaming
32GB GSkill Trident RGB
Seasonic Focus 750W
Inland 2TB M.2 2280 SSD
Phanteks Embroo M Case
Win 10 Pro
(Still looking for ARGB Case Fans)
I’m still looking for a video card, currently have AMD 5700XT 8GB
Have used Noctua before and so I had high hopes. Needed a smaller cooler than the D15 for my case so went with the U12A. Performs fantastically even at low fan speeds. And as with all the Noctua coolers I’ve used before, installation is super easy.
This thing keeps a 4.3GHz 3900x at 72 degrees max with kryonaut! simply amazing.
In idle pressoch muto.
In idle stessa temperatura, circa 29 gradi.
Quindi ottimo!!!
This is a beast of an air cooler. It’s nearly as effective at load as an AOI water cooler, though it’s only slightly less costly.
The best feature is the sound, though. At 1000 RPM, it’s dead silent. At 1500, it’s only barely audible (I can’t hear it at all over my ceiling fan’s noise). At 100%, which you’ll only hit under extreme CPU overclocking and 10+ minutes of torture tests, it’s clearly audible, but still fairly quiet.
The main reason I bought this cooler was because my previous one was ramping up to annoyingly loud levels under the tiniest loads (like just opening Firefox). Now, my CPU is overclocked by 600MHz, and my NH-U12A still doesn’t make a peep while gaming or doing heavy Photoshop use.
I was afraid it wouldnt fit or it would not cool my cpu more than the original cpu cooler, well it does cool a few degrees more.
I love how they packaged it and if you actually read the instructions your pretty good and yes use what is said to use like they even placed the parts accordingly to what you need so use only those and youtube how to install it and its pretty easy.
Very silent you can make it even more silent if you use the extra cables for the fans.
Keeps my 3900x under 75c at full load and is easy to install.
Thought about buying a water cooler for my i7 10700k since I intend to OC. I dont want the risk of water vapor leakage and the high maintenance of water cooler that can damage my PC, so after reading reviews I purchased the noctua nh u12a. I was torn between the older yet larger model the noctua d 15 but it seems too bulky for my taste and it may block some features of my gigabyte vision g mobo so I purchased the nh u12a and wow, this thing keeps my pc cool at all times
The best part is that its extremely quiet yet efficient even if I OC my i7 10700k to 5.1mhz. The video speak for itself. This was well worth it. Im glad I never purchased a water cooler.
I got this Noctua cpu cooler to replace a single fan AIO. The single fan AIO cooler on an ITX build has the temperatures around 55-60 degrees on idle. After hearing a lot of good things about Noctua coolers, I decided to get this. Installation is easy compared to AIOs. I love that the fans are tooless for maintenance cleaning and installation. I have less cable to deal with because there is no RGB light on this, but my case have enough lights to showcase what’s inside. Using the Noctua thermal paste, I was able to lower the temperatures to 38-45 degrees on idle. That’s a good temperature on an ITX build on a hot summer day. When playing video games, the cpu temps shoot up to 70 degrees average, and up to 75 on a really hot day. I’m curently using Ryzen 9 3900X, which runs hotter than my previous Ryzen 7 2700X.
Overall, I’m happy with this cpu cooler. Other than the ugly brown fans (which I might replace with Noctua Chromax), the performance of this cooler is way better than most AIOs and also easier to clean and maintain. Highly recommended.

This cpu cooler is top notch. Super easy install, and so far is working fantastically. Z390 board, with 9600K running at 5.0ghz, (4.7Ghz uncore). Aida64 stress test sits right at 70C. Prime95 blend (AVX disabled) doesn’t go above 73C. Basically silent when surfing the web or not stressing the CPU. Replaced a nearly 6 year old Corsair h100i which was a good cooler, but so far this one is definitely slightly better than the H100i was. No software to worry about (no water to worry about), just plug it in and go. Would buy again. Noctua is great – I RMA’d a 5 year old fan recently and they were awesome to deal with. I was tempted to get the NH-D15 at first but it was too tall for my case (Corsair 330R)
I bought this for my Ryzen 3900x because the stock cooler was running too hot and too noisy. Idle- 60-65c, under load- 78-90c. The noctua is everything the stock cooler isn’t. 38-45 idle, 70-74 under load. I had a few hiccups installing but I think that’s just my clumsy hands. apart from that, it’s virtually silent, performs very well and is money well spent IMO.
Wanted to cool my Ryzen 3900x and the Wraith cooler that AMD provides is a noisy beast with 2 heatpipes and can’t even keep the temperatures down without waking up the neighbors. Pushed the boat out and opted for the Noctua being one of the most expensive air coolers in the market, but boy is it worth it. Running FAH on 20 cores it hums a bit, but nowhere near the Wraith, and on idle i really have to check whether the fans are on or off.
Don’t hesitate if you can spend the few extra bucks, get it. Fair to say i’m not a professional reviewer and haven’t tested 20 different air coolers, but relative to the wraith and a coolermaster (which i had before on my intel) this is sileeennnnttt…
Bought this for my gaming PC which uses an R5 3600 and this cooler does an excellent job of keeping it cool while looking great and being completely silent.
Hands Down if your deciding from Water cooling to Aircooling – Seach on youtube, countless number of times Aircool has proven best.
Noctua Top end companies no doubt they live up to there title as very well enginner cooler / Fans.
Install with my intel i9 9900k – keeps cooling at 25 – 65 jumps between those numbers act a steady pace. ( when gaming )
Packing hands down very well organised and done very well. COMES WITH THERMAL PASTE no need to purchase additional.
Save money as cost is perfect compare to water coolers.
Colour not so great however can purchase Black when stock comes available. IF you care about your performance and longevity with your computer this is cool to go for.
I installed this on an MSI MPG Z390M GAMING EDGE AC mobo with an Intel i7 9700KF processor. It was an easy mount for such a beastly cooler. The fan clips are a pain to get right, they are just little metal clips that go into the fins, once you get them right, they do stay on. The fans are very quiet and keep the CPU temps down, I have the CPU clocked to 5.1 and it stays cool even on benchmark testing.
One great feature is that the cooling tower is offset a bit for memory clearance, there were clearance issues with other air coolers, but this one fits like a charm.
Some don’t like the colors, but it does not bother me.
I really didn’t want to invest in an water cooler. Air coolers are more reliable in the long term.
Noctua is in the top for this.
It’s cooling my I7 8700k very well.
I was thinking of overclocking more now but apparently my mb is not the greatest so 4.8ghz is quite OK. Sitting at 65 degrees on maximum load. Not bad at all.
This cooler definitely performs very nicely.
I had to switch from a custom watercooling loop to this to allow moving the computer a few times in a short period of time and this CPU cooler managed to keep my i7-8700k @ 5GHz fairly cool. It’s obviously not up there with a custom loop, so I had to downclock the OC to about 4.5 GHz to keep decent temps (I mean, 5 GHz was fine for the CPU, but my room heated very very very quickly, so it wasn’t fine for me).
The fans are definitely quiet when not doing anything CPU heavy, I can’t hear them. Once I kick of a game (or whatever), the fan spins much faster and start to make a low humming noise, it’s very subtle and NOT disturbing at all. Just noisier than my previous setup.
That said, I very strongly recommend this cooler for anyone looking for something VERY performant yet super easy to install and basically fool-proof. Can’t go wrong with this.
Shipping – From supplier to the philippines took about 5 days, which is incredibly fast considering we’re under lockdown.
Packaging – the u12a unit was well packed by noctua. But the noctua box was put into another slightly larger delivery box. There is no bubble wrap in between, it’s a good thing the item performed as expected out of the box.
Installation – incredibly easy to install.. the hard part was removing the components of your motherboard to swap out the mounts.
Performance – I live in the philippines, so ambient temperature here reaches about 37 to 42 with the AC off.
My system specs is as follows.
Case : Trendsonic Rainbow
PSU : Thermaltake 630w modular
MoBo : Asus Prime B250 M-A
Processor : Intel i7 – 7700k(Stock)
Memory : 2x 8gb DDR4 Kingston HyperXFury

Thermal paste used : Kryonaut Thermal Grizzly
Intake fans :
2x Noctua NF A12x25 120mm Fans
Exhaust Fans
1x Trendsonic Case fan(Rear)
1x Coolermaster HyperEvo 212 Fan(Top) – yes i converted it to a case fan.
Comparison
(From Hyper evo 212 to NH U12A)
Idle Temps
Hyper Evo – 40 to 42
Noctua – 40 – 42
At Load
I ran TLoZ BotW via Cemu 4k res @60fps in 1 hour. (yup, definetly not the best benchmarking tool)
Hyper evo – 82 to 83(Average)
Noctua – 71 to 73 (Average)
Noise – yup, silent as it can ever be, noctua’s claims is legit.
Personal Opinion – I think the NH u12a is a great cooler and all, but also be aware of your ambient temperature, I believe this cooler will work best in a air-conditioned environment.
But alas, to shave off 10 from the load temperatures under room temps? I’m sold!!! Thank you seller!
Except for the packaging I’d rate this buy 9.5/10.
Oh, and linus tech tips sent me here.
Really great for air cooling your computer’s CPU. I’m using mine on a Ryzen 9 3900x and it does well and even maintains around 4.125GHz clockspeeds during Prime95 stress testing. The clockspeeds will eventually lower but the test is very synthetic and hard to run so I am impressed at the competitive cooling from this device. For anyone new to building like me, this requires a lot more force to hold down while you’re screwing it on than you would expect so just take it slow but it won’t be coming off and helps create better contact on the CPU to help transfer the heat.
I am using this on an i5 9600k oc’d to 4.9ghz on a gigabyte z390 gaming x mobo. Idle temps 27-28 degrees Celsius. Using OCCT, large data set, temps never go above 60. When I was using a Cooler Master hyper 212 evo with two fans push pull config temps would go up to 70. This thing is so quiet, even with both fans, I cannot hear it. Awesome. I love Noctua’s easy installation process, they included everything I needed ex, thermal paste, screwdriver, y adapter etc. I highly recommend this cooler if you want an easy installation, no loud fan noises, and very low temps on overclocked cpu’s.
Works well and temps are over 20c lower than stock AMD cooler for r5 3600 – instead of hitting 95c it now goes to around 75 ish at max
Used to cool a Ryzen 7 3700X with PBO enabled. Manages to keep the CPU around 80 degrees while running Prime95 at 80% fan speed and around 66 while gaming with fans at 50%. The Ryzen Zen2 CPUs are known to be a little hotter than usual so as much as 80 sounds high, this only occurs during a synthetic load benchmark. For reference, 3* 120mm case fans are all running around 850RPM to keep my PC as silent as possible at all times so there’s not a huge amount of fresh air getting into the case.
I find the manufacturer’s claim that this 120mm cooler offers 140mm-like performance to be exaggerated. It DOES perform well, in fact it’s very good within its own category, but when a company claims their product offers performance similar to a higher product category, you probably don’t expect them to mean compared to *bad* products in that higher product category, right? So it was my assumption (based on the marketing and price) that Noctua was comparing this new 120mm cooler’s performance against their own current 140mm products, a comparison which it unfortunately does not live up to.
The Noctua NH-U12A is currently priced significantly higher than their 140mm coolers. In fact it’s the most expensive air cooler on the market that I’m aware of, so you’re paying an additional $20+ for a product which performs worse. It is noticeably more compact and easier to work with, which is nice, but from another perspective this also means it should cost less to produce and ship. If your goal in buying a Noctua product isn’t “premium” cooling, there are many “good enough” 140mm coolers and “sufficient” 120mm coolers to choose from, so I find it hard to recommend the Noctua NH-12A until it’s priced more fairly.
Noctua’s main advantage isn’t the heat sink itself, it’s the fans. When you can comfortably buy a cheaper brand’s tower heat sink and a pair of Noctua fans to clip onto it for similar performance but much less money than this all-in-one purchase (and have 1-2 decent off-brand fans left over for free to use as case fans), it becomes very clear that the price is unreasonable. I believe it should be at least $10-20 cheaper than their NH-D15 – a cooler which is only priced so high itself because it’s the best air cooler on the market paired with the best fans on the market, giving Noctua leeway to charge significantly more than its peers. One final small gripe: Noctua is still including their old inferior NT-H1 thermal paste with their coolers instead of the improved NT-H2 paste they introduced a while ago… that’s just being cheap. Noctua, this is a premium cooler at a premium price, give us your premium thermal paste.
I bought this cooler for my new Ryzen-based PC in a Fractal Design R5 case, chosen because it’s the only modern case offering side ventilation, 8 3.5″ drive bays, optical drive compatibility, and excellent radiator compatibility. As you can see in the picture, the Noctua NH-U12A comfortably fits in the case with a few centimeters of clearance in every direction and doesn’t conflict with standard-sized RAM sticks. Depending on your motherboard layout, it may be difficult to attach the fan cables if you have a radiator at the top of your case. I recommend attaching the provided fan splitter onto your motherboard’s CPU fan header, then installing the cooler, then attaching the fans to the splitter. It’s much easier to connect them this way rather than attaching the fans directly to fan headers on the motherboard.
As long as size isn’t an issue, you should buy the cheaper and more effective Noctua NH-D15 for premium air cooling instead. If your case can fit this larger cooler, there’s absolutely no reason to buy a Noctua NH-U12A.
Although this CPU cooler isn’t as pretty as some AIO or other water coolers, it’s cooling performance and silent operation surpasses just about all of them. Just search for videos online comparing CPU coolers and you’ll find good information before you commit to a CPU cooler. For me personally, the aesthetics of a CPU cooler wasn’t a big factor. More important to me are the cooling performance and loudness factors. The Noctua NH-U12A is the best of the top CPU coolers for these two factors. Before I watched the videos, I always thought water based CPU coolers were the most quiet and was very surprised to learn that Noctua NH-U12A outperformed some of them in quietness. The only thing that bothered me a bit about the Noctua NH-U12A was that the clips that holds the fans to the heat sinks are not very effective. They don’t hold the fans very tightly. I had to use some twist ties to tie the two fans clips together to make sure the clips didn’t pop off accidentally. Despite this small annoyance, I still highly recommend the Noctua NH-U12A CPU cooler for those who want great cooling performance along with low noise.
My computer CPU was reaching 100 degree C temps and subsequently ruined a 400 dollar motherboard and that was with water cooling. I am not sure if my water cooler was defective or what. I decide I did not want the complexity of another water cooler breakdown. So, I went with this device.
I was confused about the types of thermal paste to use, some are goopy and thin and melt away and some are thick and still melt away with hot temps. So, I went with an, “Innovation Cooling Graphite Thermal Pad” (on Amazon). I was thinking it was a fail-safe approach.
With those installed, my idle temps on a 12 core non delidded I9 are ‘under’ 40 degrees C and the temps rarely ever hits 60 degrees under load and that is only for moments and it goes back down usually. That is with rendering huge 3D scenes with tons of geometry.
You cannot go wrong with this combo Noctua NH-U12A and the thermal pads. Just check the fins for dust every few months. This cooler solved a huge heat problem for me and I am glad I am not relying on a pump working right and/or possible air bubbles in a factory sealed system… I can just look in through the side of my case and see if the fans are still running. Runs quiet too!
I recommend this cooler for a non-dellidded I9 cpu and whatever else it fits. It completely cleared my RAM and I have a large case with fans blowing in and sucking out.
I thought it might be heavy on my motherboard but running as cool as it does it is not too heavy and the mounting system seems completely stable and solid.
I do not plan to overclock my CPU… It is not worth possibly damaging a $1000.00 processor even if it does stay below critical temps.. Lots of RAM and dual (non overclocked) 1080ti graphics cards will provide me with the headroom I need while keeping things cool and stable on the processor end.
The performance of this product far surpasses my expectations! Some complain about the look of this cooler but I prefer function over fashion.
Buy it, (and the thermal pads) they are worth very single penny.
Jokes aside, I’m really shocked at just how quiet this thing really is. I build my own PCs every couple of years, usually with the highest end parts available at the time. I’ve always used liquid cooling in my PCs, believing that there was no way a heat sink with a fan on it could possibly cool a high-end processor.
I was wrong.
After a ton of investigation, I found that Noctua scored at the top of the heap in heat sink processor cooling. That is, if you don’t mind spending a little more. Other air cooling manufacturers fared well in some reviews, but that was usually when cost was factored in. I figure, if I’m spending several hundred dollars on a processor, whether I spend ten dollars more than another on a cooling solution doesn’t really matter.
And shockingly, it came out AHEAD of most liquid coolers for straight-out cooling ability. How can that be?? Check the internet, and you’ll see it’s true.
This heat sink makes my old liquid cooling system sound like a Mack truck. I never realized how much noise it was making until it was gone. This thing whispers.
The only time I hear anything at all is when I’m doing something intensive benchmarking with Cinebench, or gaming. Only then do I hear my fans spin up a little, but it’s still not nearly as loud as my old cooler. (And a lot of the noise that I DO hear is probably my two GPU fans, not this cooler.)
Cooling has been the same or better than my old liquid cooling system, and this is an i9-9900k processor with two M.2 drives, a high-end GPU, and an 850W PSU generating heat in the case.
Some people don’t like the colors. But I’m a practical man, and don’t care about aesthetics. And for those people, they’re now making black as well as this tan and brown scheme.
One thing I love about air cooling, is you will never have to worry about it leaking and ruining your entire machine. If anything ever breaks on this, it’ll be a fan, and they can easily be replaced.
Get this cooler. It’s awesome.
Absolut empfehlenswert!
Good temps on my i9-9900k. Absolutely recommend. The cooler is half as wide than the NDH-14/15 but it’s quite tall. If you’re thinking to build a mATX / ITX system don’t forget to take the measurements.
Also, it is very quiet.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZED !!! Can’t even hear them on 70% usage , amazing temperatures , good quality . They even send me a thermal paste ! What a company ! Well done guyzzz !
Used it in my first gaming PC build. Easy to install, very quiet and keeps my 3700x nice and cool. Plenty of reviews on youtube (thanks LTT), some find it is even better than some cheaper AIOs. Definitely worth the money and don’t have to worry about leaks or AIO pumps breaking.
I got it for my i9 9900k ~Ghz 6 months now never gave me a problem
In sintesi?
I had the NH-D15 before and whilst it was excellent at cooling, it was load at times. Due to changing the GPU to vertically mounted I had to change the cooler as the NH-D15 would no longer fit and tried the NH-U12A instead. I wish I had bought this to begin with! The cooling is a match for the NH-D15, but even though it uses 120mm fans instead of 140mm it runs quieter and there are no install problems from its size. Highly recommended
Noctua always deliver quality and performance .What they do they do brilliantly.Top product.Better cooling than most water coolers and very low noise levels.
All temperatures in Celsius.
(Using with a Ryzen 3700X, running in a 15-20 degree room, mid tower case with decent airflow)
Idle temps around 35, gaming/rendering from 50 to 65 depending on demand. Hottest I’ve seen the CPU go was around 79 on a really hot day after several hours. Not sure about hotter CPUs though.
Certainly not the prettiest cooler out there, not so great for the tempered glass lovers. But if you want something quiet and effective I would recommend, and cheaper than an AIO.
Easy to mount and dismount the two fans, just make sure you have enough fan headers/fan splitters (and check they aren’t in annoying places).
Overall great for my needs and I would assume for anyone else with a similar build.
Great heatsink with twin fans but maybe just a few mm too big for my tower hahaha installed really easily and with no issues. Great purchase, will recommend to others
I had an i7-7700k with a Noctua NH-U9S, excellent cooling and small form factor, then upgraded to a NH-U12S, a bit larger but even better cooling. Now upgraded to a Z390 mobo w/ i7-9700k and Noctua NH-U12A. This cooler performs excellent and keeps cpu at 55C while gaming. But I wanted to disclose something in my particular setup that I found helped me cool my case & gpu (rtx 2080ti) even better. The NH-U12A cpu cooler comes with 2 of Noctua’s NF-A12 fans in a push/pull config. I discovered that if you remove the ‘pull’ fan and just leave the ‘push’ fan it didn’t change my cpu temps at all. So what I did with the extra NF-A12 is installed it in the top upper rear exhaust location thus replacing the NF-S12A that was occupying that slot. My case temp dropped a few degrees C and my GPU dropped 4C. This wasn’t a fluke 5 minute test but hours of testing and it really works. I have a micro ATX case which is limited in size and space and proper fan placement and fan profiles make a huge difference. YMMV
Four years ago when I upgraded my computer with an i7 5820k processor and other components I thought I would like to have the best cooling possible so I bought a liquid AIO CPU cooler (Silverstone TD02-E). I wondered how long it would last and it was about four years till the water pump must have quit. This whole time I thought it was working pretty good. Fans in the Cooler Master HAF 922 case were clearly audible but I didn’t think they were too noisy. The other day the computer started running hot and that’s when I realized that was it for the water pump.
So since then I’ve been reading and realized air cooling can work just as good or better than liquid cooling and I bought the Noctua NH-U12A based on reviews. I “laugh out loud” at how much better the NH-U12A is than what I’ve been unknowingly suffering with for four years.
At idle the computer is now silent. I have to put my head down by the computer to hear anything. The fans barely turn (3x200mm, 1x120mm plus the two NH-U12A fans). Even at 100% load running Intel CPU diagnostic utility the fans barely run and the CPU highest core temp is 54C (stock clock settings). This thing is awesome! I didn’t realize until now what a lousy water cooler I’ve been using and how extremely noisy it was. When I would run Handbrake all the fans would make a lot of noise. Obviously I will never use a liquid cooler again!
Very high-quality product, it dropped my peak CPU temp by 8-10c in my inefficient case. Very impressed.
Also lieber raus damit, bevor wirklich was kaputt geht.
Professional cooling, quiet same performance like a 240mm AIO. Only downside is the price but you can use for lot of CPU s.
Next day Prime delivery on point.
Performance impact. Excellent cooling power in a small package. Mounting is very easy, but…
Cooler must be mounted near to the RAM modules to align properly as one side of mounting arm is longer.
Use it for a 3800x @ 1.45volts (auto/about 140watts tdp) CPU tdie under 90c with x570 master and kryonaut thermal paste
Absolutely brilliant. But the brace bracket for the rear of the motherboard left a 1mm gap but wasn’t a problem as I used one that was already in. On stress tests on a i9 9900k 5ghz it’s average temp was 58c with a minimum 35c I’m very happy with this
This cooler looks awesome, this was my first adventure in to premium CPU coolers and I’m definitely a convert.
Please note I had to return this cooler as I had miscalculated the clearance between the outer wall of my Lian Li tower and the coolers height. This became apparent as soon as I took the cooler out of the box. It’s huge!
There was no doubting the quality of the cooler, the radiator was beautifully made and the fans just radiated quality, just comparing them against some of the other fans in my build has made me realize I need to upgrade my other fans.
The box came crammed with all the bits you would need to connect to a multitude of different motherboards. The most useful for my setup was the CPU PWM Y-cable, my motherboard could only support one PWM to the CPU and the cooler comes with two fans for the push / pull configuration. Without the Y-cable I would have lost the PWM control of one of my fans, this was a great addition to the box as I hadn’t even considered this limitation.
Though I cannot comment on the ability of this cooler directly, I have seen these in action first hand – which is why I bought one – and I was very impressed with it’s performance, even when the CPU was under load the fans were super quiet.
I am truly gutted I had to return the cooler!
after enduring my single fan cooler from another brand regularly letting me down with temperatures for my i7-8700K hitting 95-98C when rendering with all cores – I bought this – fitted it (which was super easy by the way – the supplied thermal paste is a pleasure to use!) and then sat back and enjoyed the resultant drop of 15C on the CPU as a result!
It qorks fine and my cpu temperature is lower so im happy
Best cooler around the downside is the price and the colours
The whole package is really impressive. The cooler is well made, extremely effective and I can’t hear it from 2 metres away with the case closed. The documentation is good and it’s really easy to fit. Best cooler I’ve ever had. Highly recommended.
I bought this cooler to replace my stock Intel CPU cooler after watching a Linus Tech Tips video comparing coolers. The Noctua ones seemed to work better than even some basic liquid cooling systems and I was blown away by the effect in my own computer.
Nearly silent, and I went from having an average CPU temp of 75C to 45!
Would totally recommend, and 6 years’ warranty is a wonderful bonus.
it’s not loud but you do hear it a little bit, everything except that is perfect, keeping my i7 8700k under 56 degrees celcius
12 degrees lower temps compared to a Coolermaster 212. Highly recommended, all with being quieter as well.
Silent yet powerful, packaging was top notch and the attention to detail is impressive. It manages to keep my i7-8700k under control while overclocked, this alone really impressed me.
I soldi spesi li vale tutti !!
This cooler is one of the best air coolers you can buy, forget AIO’s unless it’s a 360+ size but even then the NH-U12A competes very well, as the only point of failure on an air cooler is the fan which can easily be replaced while an AIO has many points of failure, the pump, fans and water, the installation is uncomplicated using the easy to follow guide, the cooler also comes with Noctua’s NT-H1 thermal compound, you won’t be disappointed.
Non state manco a pensare 2 volte.
Just finished installing the cooler, and Noctua did a great job again. would give 15 stars if I could. Even packaging itself worth more than 5 stars 🙂
Edit: I added two 2000 RPM Noctua NF-F12 iPPCs fans instead of stock NF-A12s, they are a bit noisy in full speeds, but man, Noctua is amazing :D. Apart from that, I have had 4 redux case fans and my case is so cool
