Very well built & sturdy tripod. Brought & returned product as I found it $75 cheaper elsewhere & Amazon were not able to price match. Thankyou Amazon for the easy return process.

Great sturdy aluminum tripod. It has a tool which you use to adjust the tripod legs that if you don’t attach a lanyard to it will easily fall from its mounting point on one of the legs. I was taking pictures on an ice float with this tool kept falling on the ice multiple times until I had to put it in my pocket as to not lose it. I attached a wire to the tripod center hook and ran it to this tool so problem solved. Another issue happened when I put the legs into a winter stream to get some pictures upstream. As I closed the tripod to relocate the bottom metal bushing that goes under the leg clamp broke due to the cold causing it to become brittle. Contacted peaks customer support which they are sending me replacement parts. To be fair I am extremely hard on tripods as I do a ton of hiking and nature photography in extreme conditions and it is holding up pretty good.

I’d like the carbon kevlar model but opted for aluminum. Significantly cheaper and the weight is not too heavy. Unless you plan to carry the tripod on long backpacks, the aluminum model works the same and it’s not worth spending that much more money.

Feels very good quality and robust. Was slightly heavier than had previously imagined but suppose that’s due to quality of the product.

I found this tripod so light, stable, and easy to set up. I hike a lot and normally take just a day pack. This tripod fits perfectly and doesn’t add much more weight to my gear. I can’t believe i waited so long to buy a good quality tripod!

Hab mehrere Stative. Auch von bekannten Marken. Leider waren meine Reisestative oft sehr wackelig…
Dieses hier hat einen stolzen Preis aber wer billig kauft kauft 2x
Bin sehr zufrieden damit. Klein handlich und vorallem stabil.
Leider in der Alu Version noch etwas viel Gewicht… Wrde doch die teurere Carbon Version empfehlen… Jedoch bin auch so sehr zufrieden damit.

One thing I did not like is the unnecessary hard box packaging. nobody needs it as you already provided the sturdy cloth zipper cover since this product should be used often. other than that, I would rate 5 star.

Fantastic stable tripod. Quality is great and it’s easy to see a lot of thought went into this tripod. It’s easy to put the legs out and back compared to other tripods I’ve owned and the ball head stays put when (easily) tightened down. I also appreciate the tools built into the product, this way I don’t have to worry about leaving them home. If you want to take this one backpacking I highly recommend the ultra light conversion kit. I didn’t purchase originally and had to leave the tripod home. The conversion kit is well worth it to help lighten your pack. But for a day hike this thing fits perfectly in any backpack with a water bottle pocket. Really glad I purchased this tripod.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Users… but it is still one of the best things you can buy for your camera. It is one of the things that you just enjoy using, touching, or even looking at.

The head also has some obvious limitations.

And the carbon fiber version is not worth it, roughly +1 British Pound for -1g of weight in the range of 1500-1300g is a joke.

This is almost the perfect travel tripod. I love the way it folds into a small cylindrical shape that makes it very convenient to pack. It is steady ,sturdy and well built. Easily holds my longest zoom lens. Legs extend and retract quickly and easily. The only think I don’t like is that you have to use an allen key to put the camera bracket onto the camera. It comes with an allen key but it does not stay well in the place where you are suppose to store it on one of the legs. It fell out twice in a matter of hours. Fortunately I was indoors but I have to put it in my pocket and remember to take it with me. A small thing, but if you lose the allen wrench, you can’t take the adapating plate on or off the camera. A second disavantage is that is more difficult to pan as there is no handle and no way to keep the pan the camera without the possibility of tilting..it can be done, but you have to pay attention during pans…great for stills. It is not the lightest tripod, but it packs the best and is more sturdy than lighter products.

I haven’t owned many tripods and I’m a hobbyist, not a professional but this tripod is amazing. It sets up in seconds. Sometimes a product video makes it seem easier than it it in reality. But that’s not the case here. It really is easy to set up. The arca plate that it comes with works with the peakdesign straps if you have one of those. It comes with a case. And it folds down really compact. You can point your camera in virtually any angle. Highly recommended but the downside is the price. It’s not cheap by any means.

The simplicity of this tripod which is almost a virtual reinvention, is superb in terms of weight, packability, speed of set up and take down, and just awesomely easy to use…not having to remember which of the often 3-4 knobs does what…just one major ring that positions ballhead. Just WOW WOW WOW!!! I love this tripod and commend Peak Design for taking the 3-4 years in its effort to redesign a travel tripod that is truly a travel tripod!!…and frankly I would rather have this than the $1400 RRS that I owned previously. I got the aluminum version…did not feel that the extra $250 for the carbon fiber model was really critical for me.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have a tripod problem. Too many tripods in the stable over the years! Still in search of the perfect tripod. With low cost, low weight, compact for hiking, easy deployment, tall enough for near eye level work, and sturdy enough for a heavier setup. And more importantly, plate compatibility allowing easy transferability to alternate carry systems (strap clip, PD Capture).

The Peak Designs team really did listen to photographers looking for a multi-purpose travel tripod. As a photographer who spends time hiking for picture taking opportunities, I have looked for the perfect travel tripod over the last decade. Surveying my current collection, including a Manfrotto MKC3-H01 travel tripod (now, MKCOMPACTACN-BK, with different proprietary hybrid head “joystick” grip ball head, and a different plate arrangement), a Velbon carbon fiber 630 with a Manfrotto 498 RC2 head, a Velbon DF-10ML (closely related to the EX Macro 3-section), and a small Neewer CK-30 compact tripod purchased for the Arca plate and ability for ground level macros.

The PD aluminum tripod is not the lightest among them, and it is expensive –but it is one of the most thoughtful, compact, well-constructed, stable, and confidence inspiring tripods, with an advantage “in the field”.

    Features I like.

Compact. In its carry state, a little taller than the size of a standard Nalgene water bottle.

The legs, connection pieces, and clasps. I prefer the flip-out clasps for leg deployment over the screw types. For me, there is less fumbling around trying to find release and locking positions. The height is great, along with being able to position close to the ground.

The ball head works well for me. The tightening mech on the ball works as expected, even with a Sony a7r-IV with a heavy Sony 200-600mm zoom. Positioning is easy and can be straight up or down. The Peak Design Capture clip uses the same Arca mount plate so you can easily go from carrying to tripod mount with no fumbling to change the mount plate. There is a locking mechanism that prevents accidental release of the plate.

Tools attached to the tripod are a thoughtful addition. The carry bag is durable and apparently water proof.

    Things I don’t like.

Price. Oh, the price is high for sure, even higher if you pick the lower weight carbon fiber version.

Weight. It is not as light as my Manfrotto compact tripod, but not overly so. With anything like this, lower weight is always something I want.

Is this tripod worth it? For those inclined to save money and look for a similar feature set, albeit not as complete? The Manfrotto travel tripod– if you can find a head version that works for you (read through the comments on the different versions). IF Manfrotto had an Arca plate version, it would be a no brainer — significantly lower cost, lower weight, with just enough features, it would be a great choice.

That said, I am keeping the Peak Designs tripod! For me, it is nearly perfect. If you can afford spending over $350 for a tripod, I do not think you would be disappointed.

Good design, with all characteristics that make a good travel tripod, average weight for an aluminum body but very very compact and comfortable to carry on it on my next travel.
The price is a little overpriced, but it feels premium on every touch and piece of gear. The ball-head’s lot different from the standard tripods but for me, honestly, it works like charm: easy to set, you can try to do panning if your gear as average weight and you lose It just a bit to have the control but it does not support the normal panning!!

I’d stopped travelling with a tripod because the Manfrotti I purchased 30 years ago, though still functional was soooo heavy and bulky. This Peak Design is pricy compared to others on the market but not as pricy as the tripod and head that I’m replacing it with. I got the cheaper (aluminium) version which is still lighter than my old tripod. But, it folds down to the size of a mid-size water bottle, fits easily in my backpack and is very easy to assemble and break down. Love it.

Although expensive, this tripod is really worth every penny. I managed to find it for 10% off and it has exceeded my expectations. I can’t justify the cost of the carbon fiber model but the aluminum is light enough and is way smaller and more convienent than my other main tripod. I do wish it would go a bit higher but for what it is, its a great tripod. Well designed and good product. You get what you pay for.

I wanted a good tripod for hiking and general photography that would be enough to support a large telephoto lens, but not weigh a ton. This tripod met those requirements perfectly. The designers really went back to the drawing board with this tripod and gave it a thorough redesign compared to a conventional tripod. The resulting design is quite compact (approximately the diameter of a water bottle), but is capable of supporting quite a bit of weight without flexing. In the photo, I have a Nikon D7500 and a Tamron 250-600mm lens. The tripod holds this weight very securely at any height or angle. Extending and retracting the legs is a simple task and can be accomplished with one hand. The included smartphone mount is quite handy as well.

In all, this tripod will work well whether you travel or not. It may not be the cheapest tripod on the market, but the quality and engineering are definitely worth it.

    Fantastic tripod

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI was a little skeptical when this was first released, with the high price and mixed reviews. I have another super popular brand travel tripod made of carbon fiber, which I did not like using, because it check all the boxes but the user experience is not smooth. The feet fell off and I had to dig them out of the mod and screw them back in! Putting the camera back on required two hands twisting and turning two levers, very stupid when you are holding a camera among rocks and trying to get it on.
My friend is a big peak design fan, this is on his wish list. I thought I would try it. I did not go for the carbon fiber because of the price, I hope the vibration does not come back and bite me. I figure most of my landscape shots will be away from people and traffic, so I should be fine. A little extra weight is bad for my back but good for image stabilization.
    1. The build. This is a rock solid, heavy duty tripod. A little heavier than most travel tripod I owned. The positive is the stability. The joints are very stable. The camera latch on to the top securely. No worries. Of course all of you know by now it folds into size of a large water bottle.
    2. The user experience. This is where peak design shines. It is all about convenient design. Popping the leges out are quick. Twist to unlock, the camera pop in, twist to lock, a very easy and secure operation, the best I have used. Twist to raise the center column. Another twist to adjust the ball head. A spring loaded push lever right on the leg to change angle of the legs. There is a build in storage for a two headed tool, which is mostly used to screw in the plate.
    3. Of course the base plate works with the capture clip, if you bought into the peak design eco system.
    4. The packaging is surprisingly premium. A beautiful cardboard box with elastic latch. Then a travel bag made of the good peak design material stuff. I will probably never use them but it’s good they don’t cut corners on quality.

  36. Anonymous says:

Okay well can all acknowledge that this is a little pricey. I went with the aluminum, because it’s a lot cheaper and from what I read it’s probably more sturdy than the carbon fiber version.

I’m not a fan of twist locks, and I like how fast I can attach the camera to the head, and know that it’s locked in. The legs are easy to collapse when in a hurry, plus I know when they are all locked unlike the twist locks.

It feels good to hold, because of the shape and size, I really appreciate that for travel. I didn’t notice any vibrating issues with wind, but it wasn’t too bad of a day to shoot. It fits great on my camera bag and doesn’t bulk out like my previous one.

I got this mainly to be on the go and for travel. I have a nice manfrotto that is solid, but it’s a monster to carry around. This does its purpose even though it feels heavier than it should be, but the size makes up for it.

The other thing is that it would be nice to have a coating on it, because when it’s cold the aluminum freezes your hands. Other than that I don’t really have any issues.

    Good travel tripod

So this tripod does some things really well. The head has been a bit of a game changed for me as I no longer need 3 separate dials, just one.

It is very compact, but still is heavy. I would recommend going for the carbon fibre version.

Big annoyance for me is the legs. While they extend and hold the weight well, they feel very flimsy. I’ve not had the tripod out in wind yet, but it feels as though I will get camera shake.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersObviusly the point of this tripod is to be compact – and it is. Its also stable and the quality of production is excellent. There are a lot of clever features. The included hex key is kept in a snug holder, and its inclusion means that conections can be made tight. The attached ballhead with arca swiss mount offers a lot of flexibility. Ideal travel tripod where maximim compactness is more desirable then maximum stability.

I bought this as a travel tripod to go with my Canon M50 which I find is an ideal travel camera. The tripod is well designed & seems well built & stable. I have only had it a couple of days so haven’t really had a good chance to evaluate it but it seems well up to the task. One unexpected bonus is that the Peak Design standard QR plate supplied with the tripod is so small it doesn’t obstruct the battery/SD card cover so can be left on the camera unlike the much larger plate for my Manfrotto tripod. All in all very happy with my piurchase so far.

There’s not much I can say about this tripod that hasn’t been covered by the thousands of YouTube reviews. To that end, I give kudos to Peak Design for understanding how to effectively market their products to their target audience.

This is not my first Peak Design product, and I doubt it will be my last. Every time I purchase another Peak Design product, I acknowledge that there are cheaper versions of similar products available. What makes Peak Design different is that their products are specifically designed to minimize or eliminate the “friction points” that get in the way of taking photos and videos. This design comes at a cost, but ultimately I find that I’m more likely to use my expensive camera when things like bags, clips, and straps aren’t getting in the way.

Turning to the tripod, this is a perfect example of a novel design that helps reduce friction points in the photo/video process. The physical changes make this device thin enough that it can easily be carried in most bags or backpacks without needing a special tripod carrier. Unlike other travel tripods, you don’t need to waste time with flipping the legs each time you unfold/refold the tripod. The lever locks mean the legs can be quickly deployed, and you can visually confirm that the legs are locked. The camera can be attached to the ballhead with a literal snap, and it securely locks into place with a quarter turn. Adjusting the ballhead is done with a single ring, rather than dealing with a separate pan/friction/general knob. In essence, this tripod is trying to reduce each of the annoying parts about using a tripod. When your tripod doesn’t get so much in the way of the creative process, that means you are more likely to bring and use it. This is not the “perfect” tripod, but it is–in my opinion–the “easiest” tripod.

And that’s been my experience with Peak Design products. There may be other products that are technically superior or which are cheaper, but I find that the products which focus on ease of use over specs and price tend to be the ones I use again and again. For that reason, the price is one I’m happy to pay.

Golden Review Award: 36 From Our UsersOverall I do like this Tripod, and I’m LUKCY to be able to afford it. Its very expensive, but I travel alot, and it does fit within the water pockets of my backpack which is a huge bonus. Consider this an investment, perhaps take a couple quick photo gigs to pay for it.
But I will stress, if you aren’t really a backpacker then you don’t really need the sleek design nor the limited height. For a traveler it’s perfect, for a studio photographer you may have issues taking portraits of tall people at eye level.
Before you buy, ask yourself if you take more photos traveling/backpacking, or in a studio?
If you’re a traveler like me, it will be worth the hefty price tag. If you just need a general tripod, buy cheaper!!!!!

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersBought this tripod as soon as it launched after following the Kickstarter and missing out on buying on there at a reduced price. As soon as I saw it available to buy I had to get one! Only got the aluminum version as not really wanting to fork out 600 for a tripod for a little more stiffness! And to be honest the tripod lives up to all the peak design stuff I own the quality is top notch and the ease of use and the function is all there! Absolutely love it and the life time warranty is also a great way to show the faith that they have in their products would give 10 stars if I could!
